2.9 V6 diesel on hold – and some thoughts on those 9-5 spyshots

March 12, 2009 in Archive

GM announced yesterday that they were placing their big stonking Duramax diesel on hold. That engine was destined for their big SUV’s.
I’ve just received some info suggesting that the 2.9l V6 diesel that GM were developing through VM Motori has also been placed on hold. Apparently there are problems in Italy where the engine is being developed. Saab’s focus on emissions and efficiency are probably part of the issue as well.
This engine was due to appear in the Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-4x for the European and (quite likely) Australian markets and it’s loss will be a blow for these models.
I have to assume that both these new models should have access to the superb four cylinder TTiD engine in the Saab 9-3, but the bigger version in the newer vehicles would have been a bonus.
——
In other news, I heard from a Saab insider in the last few hours. He wanted to pass some comments along about the Auto Motor and Sport images of the Saab 9-5 that I showed here yesterday.
I’ve got his OK to pass this along….

One image was “close-ish, but no cigar”
The other was “not even close”

I’ll let you figure out which was which.
Big images are available directly at Auto Motor and Sport

Saab investor identities emerging

March 12, 2009 in Archive

There’s no names being thrown around as yet, but some basic info about those parties enquiring about Saab is starting to hit the news services.
In a Dagens Industri report published today, Eric Geers confirms that there is a group of Swedish-based investors that they’re talking to.
Here’s the translation:

A Swedish-based group of investors have shown interest in Saab Automobile. “I can not reveal who they are. But I can confirm that there is a group of investors in Sweden has shown interest,” says Eric Geers, spokesman for Saab, to Reuters .
In the case of interest in Saab Automobile in large, is it six-eight companies have canvassed the company, according to Eric Geers.
In Tuesday’s Financial Times, it was suggested that a Swedish-led consortium is interested in the Volvo PV, which Ford is to sell

And in e24, he also confirms that there’s some Chinese interest in the company:

It has been speculated that some of the Chinese car manufacturers have expressed interest in Saab. Is there something in the speculation?
- If you would speculate that there is an interest from the industry, you are not wrong, “says Saab informationschef Erik Geers.

Several Chinese carmakers (Geely, Dongfeng), after initially denying that they were interested in acquisitions, have now stated that they’re looking at situations in Europe. One could fairly assume that both Saab and Volvo are on the radar of these companies.
Hopefully things will become clearer in the near future.

Saab to shed 750 jobs

March 12, 2009 in Archive

I know this is just starting to hit the Swedish newspapers. I haven’t seen those yet but I’ve just got off the phone with Saab’s communications people, who’ve given me the low-down.
Saab Automobile regretfully have entered into negotiations with the unions on shedding 750 employees via redundancies.
The losses will primarily come from the factory floor, with 650 job losses to come from blue collar ranks and 100 of the jobs coming from the white collar workforce. There was no timeframe mentioned, but negotiations with the union will start quite soon.
I can tell you from the phone conversation I had that the executive are gutted to have to make this decision, but the current economic circumstances and the need to get through the reorganisation process have made this move necessary.
Saab are looking to streamline their workforce and minimise cash outflows at the moment in order to present better to prospective investors. They also have to meet the declining market and face up to the same problem many carmakers are facing at the moment – a lack of demand and excess production capacity. This is an unfortunate but necessary part of this process.
Previous announcements from Saab with regard to moving from two shifts to one shift are not separate from this announcement. From what I understand, the 750 person total here is The Total.
They probably can’t say this out loud, but I’ll say it nonetheless as it’s just a logical conclusion anyway….
Saab are still planning on delivering three new models in the next 18 months – the 9-3x, 9-5 and 9-4x. They’re also on the record as wanting to concentrate everything they can in Sweden. That means there will be cars to be built and eventually, they’re going to need people to build them. The plan is to grow, not shrink forever.
This is a difficult announcement and I’m sure it’ll be a difficult time for those effected, but from everything I heard, it’s a necessity for Saab’s reorganisation and the potential to attract the right investor.

Trollhattan pilgrimage – made and enjoyed

March 12, 2009 in Archive

I’ve just received an email from a regular reader who lives in the US and who is currently on holiday with his family in Europe.
Asher’s family own a number of Saabs between them, so a stop in Trollhattan was a no-brainer and it sounds as if they had a grand time while they were there.
——
I wanted to update you on our pilgrimage to Trollhattan. We ended up having a fantastic time in SAAB country. We took a factory tour, and everyone was relatively upbeat as to SAAB’s future, with people talking about rumors of foreign investment coming soon.
We spent a few hours at SAAB ANA, where they had a new Hirsched out 9-3 Combi on the floor, it was a brilliant car, and the leather dash is gorgeous in the flesh. The parts guru there took us to SDCC where we got a few posters and some parts… It really was SAAB heaven.
The highlight of the day was the SAAB museum where we actually ran into Mr. Erik Carlsson himself as he was arriving for his birthday celebrations… I could not have imagined a better Trollhattan experience…

——
And a few photos…..
A very sexy looking blue/grey convertible outside the main gate to the Saab factory. Just in front of that car (to the left of shot) is the reception area where I met Christer Nilsson for my own tour of the factory. Ah, take me back!
IMG_2950.JPG
Asher on the left. I assume that’s his father in the middle, and Mr Saab himself, Erik Carlsson, on the right. Taken in the entry foyer to the Saab Museum. Ah, take me back!
AsherErikCarlsson.JPG
The very first Saab convertible concepts on show at the Saab Museum, with the very first Saab 99Turbo from the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show in the background. Interesting factoid – the 99T on display actually has EMS badges on the inside.
If the worst happens and Saab are dissolved and the museum cars are auctioned, I’m going to re-mortgage our home to get that 99T in Australia.
IMG_3082.JPG
Ah, take me back!
Thanks to Asher for the quick update and the happy snaps.
Anyone who gets a chance to do so, please make sure you go and visit Trollhattan. it really is a beautiful city and a Saab-lover’s paradise.

Saab 9000 behaving badly

March 12, 2009 in Archive

There was an accident in the UK yesterday where a 53 year old man in his Saab 9000 Aero lost control in freezing conditions and ended up paying an 80 year old woman a visit – through her loungeroom wall!
9000Accident.jpg
Accidents happen. Thankfully neither the driver or the elderly woman were hurt in any lasting way, though the car and the house will probably both be written off.
What’s got me curious, and maybe the Saab crash people as well….is the question as to why the rear hatch has popped open on such a wierd angle?
I’m quite sure it’s not meant to do that. Given that the driver’s door is open, they wouldn’t have needed to force the hatch to get access to the driver. Maybe it was forced open for other reasons, but if not, then why’s it done that?
I don’t suppose we’ll ever know, but if you’ve got the engineering nouse to analyse that and take a guess as to what’s happened, then please fire away.
Strange hatch openings aside, this is another case of a Saab giving itself up to protect its owner. Through a brick wall, no less.
I hope he salvages the seats.

Thanks Turbin!

Auto Motor and Sport show new 2010 Saab 9-5 imagery

March 12, 2009 in Archive

Auto Motor and Sport – the Swedish version – have procured some images from automotive artists, Automedia. They say they’ve got some reasonable inside info as to what the 2010 Saab 9-5 will look like.
They’ve produced these CGIs based on that insider knowledge. My guess is they’ve also tried to follow the lines of the disguised Saab 9-5s we’ve been seeing in spyshots.
There are teeny tiny versions of the images. Click through to Auto Motor and Sport for massive images that you can pour over and critique to your heart’s content.
Saab_9-5_MY2010_Automedia_front.jpg
Saab_9-5_MY2010_Automedia_rear.jpg
AMS’s Par Brandt, otherwise known as my Stockholm pizza buddy, has posed a question in his article as to whether the illustrations are accurate. He’s hoping for some Saab employees to chime in via AMS comments and confirm. It’ll be interesting to see what turns up.
——
I can’t stress enough that these are only CGI’s.
As such, they’re not the real thing and will look nowhere near as good as the car in the metal. If you don’t find yourself falling in love with these, don’t stress about it. Wait for the real thing.
Personally, I really like the rear view but the front…..not so much with this rendering. I also think there’s going to be definite differences with regards to the badging. From what we’ve recently learned, Saab are going to use the SAAB wordmark a lot more, and the 2010 Saab 9-5 is the car that will set that off.
Over all, I think this looks like a pretty solid sedan. Think of it looking 10x better in the metal, then another 10x better in a performance version of the car.

Thanks ctm!

Volvo gets EIB loan. Saab – not yet.

March 11, 2009 in Archive

The Local have published a report stating that three out Sweden’s four main automotive manufacturers are about to get loans from the European Investment Bank.
Those three are Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks and Scania.

Volvo Trucks and Scania will receive €400 million each on Thursday and Volvo Cars will get 200 million euros, Sveriges Radio reported on Wednesay.
“If all the paperwork is ready and all the conditions are met, we will make the payments,” Mats Gunnarsson, an EIB advisor who is processing the loans, told the radio station.
…..Gunnarsson said the EIB would not demand any guarantees for the loans to Volvo Trucks and Scania.
“These are two companies with very good credit-worthiness,” he stressed.
However, for Ford-owned Volvo Cars the EIB would demand guarantees from the Swedish state.
“For Volvo Cars we have been told that the government is ready to issue a state guarantee, even though the details aren’t wound up yet. In this case, it is a prerequisite for an EIB payment,” he said.

So what about Saab, who have also lodged a loan application with the EIB?

Gunnarsson said no decision had been made about a loan to Sweden’s other beleaguered car maker, General Motors-owned Saab Automobiles, which has launched a legal restructuring process in order to avoid bankruptcy after GM effectively abandoned the company to focus its own financial woes.
“There is still a great amount of uncertainty about whether (Saab) will receive state guarantees. We’re waiting for that uncertainty to be clarified,” he said.

So…..
The situation is that the EIB are waiting on guarantees from the Swedish government, who are waiting for Saab to find an investor.
I’m sorry if I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but this situation can be laid wholly at the feet of General Motors.
The reason why Volvo can get this loan, despite being a fatter and relatively inefficient organisation that’s yet to downscale it’s operations to meet the market, is because they have backing from Ford.
In Saab’s case, not only did GM provide relatively little investment over the years, they announced that they were going to cut Saab off. Their lack of commitment to seeing Saab sold off successfully was a knee-jerk reaction that’s now placed not only Saab, but GM themselves in danger.
Ford organised finance several years ago, which is why they’re not going hat-in-hand to governments everywhere at the moment. They’re also producing a more desireable range of cars, which doesn’t hurt. This relative strength means that they can hold on to Volvo until the right buyer comes along.
GM have consistently lost money and are in panic mode. They tried to dump Saab, to wash their hands of it and now we’re seeing the consequences.
Ford’s organisation with Volvo gets the job done. GM’s lack of care with Saab sees them struggle.
As frustrating as it may be to have to deal with and listen to Maud Olofsson, the root cause of this problem is the lack of ownership interest GM’s had in Saab for the last 19 years.
The sooner it ends, the better.
I hope those investors that Saab are talking to are serious and that one of them is willing to step in soon. Via WooDz, Autocar are apparently reporting that the pool of loan funds available from the EIB is no bottomless pit.
I hope Saab gets their house sufficiently in order soon.

The Truth about Saab

March 11, 2009 in Archive

There are certain things in this world that can be regarded as The Truth.
You know The Truth. It’s something that doesn’t need to be sold. It’s the essence of the habitat in which it dwells. It’s the thing that tells you all you need to know about that of which you enquire.
One thing to remember, though, is that The Truth is in the eye of the beholder. What might be The Truth for me may not be The Truth for you, but The Truth is often so good that The Truth for you will at the very least be meaningful and worthy of respect from me.
Radiohead’s OK Computer is critically acclaimed as The Truth in modern music.
My wife’s smile – her real smile, not her photo smile – tells me all I need to know about The Truth in happiness.
Paul Pierce is The Truth in basketball, though Kobe Bryant is without doubt The Truth as well. Two Truths? It can happen. Imagine you get the same story from Reuters and AFP. Both stick to the facts. Both tell the truth, but in slightly different styles. AFP and Reuters. Pierce and Bryant. The Truth.

The Truth About Cars is not The Truth, even though it claims to be.
U2 are not The Truth, but Rattle and Hum was A Moment of Truth.

Some things don’t even need a descriptor to tell you of The Truth they pertain to.
The Porsche 911 is The Truth.
A baby’s smile is The Truth.
Ansel Adams was The Truth.

So what’s The Truth about Saab?

Wednesday Quick Snippets

March 11, 2009 in Archive

…and I mean quick snippets.
I’m going to be away from the interwebs most of the day again today so please talk amongst yourselves.
——
CAR Magazine have some new spyshots of the 2010 Saab 9-5, which are so similar to all the previous spyshots that we’ve seen so far that absolutely no-one thought they were newsworthy and emailed me to tell me about their appearance (which is unheard of for Saab spyshots).
Even the mention in comments was without a link!
2010Saab9-5CAR.jpg
The rear of this car is going to be interesting. I can’t imagine those sharp lines being real, but can’t wait to see what that back end really looks like.
——
It seems there was a Saab 900 owners gathering in Paris recently.
Ooh la la!!!
Golfhunter has a few photos at Flickr. Fantastique.

——
Wouldn’t it be good if Car and Driver actually posted their polls for a reason and did follow up articles on them?
In the Which Geneva Production Debut Would You Like To See In Your Garage? poll, the Saab 9-3x now has 29% of the vote.
——
Noted: comments from North America have dropped off markedly in the last week. Am I not pretty enough?

More on the idea of a Saab/Volvo merger

March 10, 2009 in Archive

No sooner had I published Tompa’s thoughts on the idea of a Saab/Volvo merger, then Sweeper emails me with a link to a Dagens Industri piece thinking along similar lines:
Here’s the article and here’s the Googletrans:
——
Thoughts on a new Volvo / Saab company have received new life. Not at all incredible, as vehicles analyst Matts Carlsson, who mention the AB Volvo, AP Funds and Vattenfall as potential partners.
Data in the Financial Times argues that Volvo Cars can become Swedish again. According to Matts Carlsson, it is the ever-persistent rumors of a Chinese buyer of the car manufacturer Volvo, which gathered momentum in several Swedish players. “From the Chinese point of departure is Volvo cleanly to get a strong brand and dealer. But my assessment is that the Swedish interests .
Matts Carlsson mean that trademark issue, the fact that the Volvo mark shared by AB Volvo and Volvo PV, involved. Moreover, he says that the large suppliers warned that a Chinese Volvo would fall low on the priority list.
“Volvo might not have access to the very latest technology because suppliers are afraid that the spill-over to China.”
“Overall, is this aspect that makes you start to draw the ears from the Swedish industrial establishment.”
And according to Matts Carlsson sources, there are plans to bring back the Volvo PV in American hands again.
“1999, AB Volvo had a strategic assessment that it would not build cars. But in light of everything that happens now, you can imagine that AB Volvo act, provided that the company does not risk the economy.”
How would it go to?
“One possible scenario is that someone, such as Leif Johansson or PG Gyllenhammar, is invited by the government to piece together a Swedish ownership solution with different partnerships.”
What the owner then?
“One can imagine that AB Volvo will partner with, for example, Vattenfall, and possibly Renault and forming an Swedish-European owner.”
It sounds like a revenge for PG Gyllenhammar old idea?
“Yes, and it has happened a lot in ten years. Now draw a new strategic map up where Ford and GM are taking significant steps back and others will take their place. Other Swedish owners mentioned is AP Funds or any of the investment companies. ”
Is the economy and the knowledge of it?
“Yes, it should be possible. Together with Saab would be a volume of up to 500.000-600.000 cars per year. In this situation, it should be possible with a Swedish solution.”
According to your sources discussed thus a new Saab / Volvo companies?
“Answer yes.”
When do you think we may know something more specific?
“I am surprised there have not been in the first half of 2009. But I thought that it would have been a solution already in the autumn, there is no reason for Ford and GM to wait, they must act.”
What do you think would be best for the Swedish car industry?
“The Chinese track is incredibly exciting, given that they will move up. But there is also considerable uncertainty as an answer to your question, I say a Swedish or Swedish-European constellation.”

Thanks Sweeper!

On Saab’s potential investors….. and Volvo’s

March 10, 2009 in News

There’s a Saab communique doing the rounds this week that solidifies the number of interested investors that Saab are talking to at the moment at 6 in number. There had been a little uncertainty as to how many.
The only other thing that’s mentioned, as per current news articles, is that they’re from in- and outside Sweden, and in- and outside the motoring industry.
——
The Financial Times report that there’s a Swedish group who are interested in purchasing Volvo in order to keep Swedish intellectual property in Sweden.
They also mention three potential Chinese bids, the prominence of which are obviously what’s stimulating Swedish interest.
The identity of the potential Swedish bidding group is unknown and the source is not identified, but one of the regulars here – Tompa – has a theory……

PG Gyllenhammar is the frontfigure in this bid. Volvo is the company mentioned but I guess that PG Gyllenhammars dream of merging Saab and Volvo to have a STRONG swedish automotive industry is still his prefered scenario for both swedish brands. Volvo will cost them alot of money, but Saab will only cost what is nescessary.
Trollhättan would still survive as Saabs place manufacture but R&D concentrated to Gothenburg (Is today to but would save tons of cash). The techs at both Saab and Volvo have been wanting this scenario for a long time. PG Gyllenhammar’s vision was that Volvo and Saab could coexcsist with Saab beeing in charge of what they are professionals at and Volvo the same with what they do best and then use the best avalible tech to make two individual brands the Best in the world. Saab focusing on sporty, practical family and single persons cars and Volvo the practical human carriers.
And why not? It will be somewhat like a dagger in many Volvo and Saab fanatics hearts but not for us that are enthusiasts and want what is best for Saab and likewise for the Volvo equals.
Same floorpans, Same brake systems, same base engines but make the brands totally different in other aspects. Audi and VW did it.. So why not Saab and Volvo? Ok this is a bit different being that they would act as opposites rather than the other more Premium than the other.
I think this is the absolute BEST scenario for BOTH Saab and Volvo. And they could give GM and Ford some serious competition.
Together they could also start a new company producing a “peoples” car. A car that without a doubt would steal a lot of sales from cheaper models from PSA, Renault, Kia etc in Sweden and abroad. A car priced equal to that of the named brands and other. Giving Saab and Volvo some extra needed cash.

I’m unfamiliar with the players Tompa mentions here.
I can see the nationalistic argument for this and I know that back in late 2008, some Saab and Volvo engineers proposed this very idea.
I just worry about the big-brother little-brother thing in a situation like this. There isn’t much technology that the two don’t already have in common, so I guess it could work.
I just really want Saab to be Saab – with their own identity – at least for a while.

Saab sales in Europe – can someone please explain?

March 10, 2009 in Archive

Yesterday I showed you the 2008 Saab sales figures for a number of countries in Europe. Today, I’d like to inject an element of mystery into these sales figures.
The following table has been taken from the same document – GM Europe Facts and Figures (pdf) – and shows Saab’s total European sales by model.
SaabSalesEurope2008.jpg
You don’t need a degree in charts and graphs to figure out what I need explained from this table, do you?
What/Who/Where/Why/How……….all questions relate to that last line item, Saab 95/96.
Does anyone have any information on this sale – PLEASE?????

Saab Arctic Adventure online

March 10, 2009 in Archive

UPDATE below!
——
Dippen’s noted a forum member over at the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden who’s visited the Ice Hotel at Jukkasjärvi, where Saab have been hosting the Ice Adventure for a number of years and where they’ve been introducing the press to the Saab 9-3x in the last few weeks.
There’s now a website for what they’re calling The Arctic Adventure and whilst you need a login to access it, there’s a fantastic introductory film that’s worth watching at the start.
SaabIceExpVideo.jpg
The guy from STCS also has an online photo album of the trip, which includes some fantastic photos.

Saab9-3xIceExp.jpg

From the film at the start, I think the experience is pretty similar to the one hosted in years past.
Our unofficial Saab Ambassaor to the UK, Robin M, took part in the Ice Experience with his wife a few years ago and sent in an account, which I published on Trollhattan Saab back in 2006 (more great photos there, too).
I’d absolutely love to do this trip one day. I just hope it’s around long enough for me to get the chance.
——
UPDATE
The photos belong to gindemo and he’s be kind enough to link us up with his video of the event.
It’s a short piece, around 3 minutes.
If you’re surfing on Internet Explorer, then click here to view it. If you manage video OK on this site, then click on through.
Thanks gindemo, and congratulations on scoring such a great trip!

Australian-Swedish policies getting closer

March 10, 2009 in Archive

Work is going to completely sideline me today, but before zipping off I thought I’d note two news articles showing that the Swedes and Aussies seem to be getting closer in policy terms.
The first is an article in an Aussie newspaper today and it’s squarely focused on motoring. In an editorial in the Melbourne Herald-Sun, a writer is chanelling Maud Olofsson:

GM recently handed a restructuring plan to the US Treasury but the 117-page document contained just one paragraph on the future of Holden.
It mentioned “changes in market preferences”, which in plain English means that Australians don’t buy Holden’s cars any more.
It promised “to bring to market a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle”, only admitting that such cars have never been built by Holden.
And it made it very clear that without permanent grants from the Australian Government, the company could not restructure. You could be forgiven for calling this blackmail.
But where was the public outcry in Australia? Did anyone stand up and say “Hang on: Why should we pay for your bad business decisions?”
In fact, in Sweden that’s precisely what happened.
Swedish car Saab is equally in trouble. But Swedish Industry Minister Maud Olofsson remained bold: “Voters elected me because they wanted nursery schools, police and nurses, and not to buy loss-making car factories.” Quite.

I can’t imagine Australia without Holden, but then again, a few months ago I couldn’t imagine Sweden without Saab.
——
and a Swedish report not concerned with cars….
In Sweden’s English-language news service, The Local, there’s a report about the Swedish government considering paying a baby-bonus for people to have kids. They’re concerned that the population is not growing at an appropriate rate and want to creat an incentive for people to have kids.
We’ve had a baby bonus scheme here in Australia for a while now. I don’t know too much about it as we’ve not had kids or considered the idea seriously.
It was a lump sum, initially. Somewhere in the order of A$5,000. Sweden are considering a payment of just over US$1,000. That $5,000 per kiddie has seen several trends – a large number of youngsters having kids, and a large number of plasma and LCD TV screen purchases. I think it’s now maid as a small amount per two-weeks to eligible recipients rather than as a lump sum so as to better supplement the ongoing costs of the infant.
Our former national Treasurer, known around the country as The Smirk, was famous for encouraging Australian families at a press conference to have “one for Mum, one for Dad, and one for the country” before urging reporters at the press conference to “go home and do their patriotic duty!”
Australia and Sweden. We’re getting closer all the time.
