Are Saab going to tease the Saab 9-5 in Barcelona??

by Swade on April 30, 2009

I’m quite sure that Saab are not going to show the 2010 Saab 9-5 in Barcelona, but this has got me wondering what they might get up to…..
At Saab-Barcelona09.com you’ll see a fairly groovy but straightforward website that’s designed to let visitors know what Saab might be showing there.
You get links about the Saab 9-3x, the Saab 9-4x, the 9-X Air and Saab’s new XWD system.
What you don’t see is the image you get at this link (also part of Saab-Barcelona09.com)

As you can see, there’s a quite clear reference to the “nuevo Saab 9-5″ there with some flashy looking gauges.
Those gauges are actually from the 9-4x concept vehicle, so let’s not get too excited just yet. Furthermore, I don’t believe Saab are going to show the 2010 Saab 9-5 in Barcelona. That honour will fall with the Frankfurt Motor Show.
But maybe they’ll let a little more information out of the bag. Maybe we’ll get one of those silhouette images that they like to tease us with nowadays?
We’ll be waiting…….
The Barcelona Auto Salon is on from the 9th to the 17th of May.

Thanks Tiago!!

I somehow find it hard to believe that they will wait until Frankfurt. My guess is that at least some pics will be shown at the same time they present the new owner(s) and the new marketing campaign for the new Saab starts.

I think they are insinuating that that is the new 9-5 speedometer..?

Dear SAAB,
May 10th is my birthday and I’ll turn 35.
I mention this as a mild reminder and hope you will consider showing off the 9-5 a bit earlier than previously promised.
Best wishes,
Rune

The gauges look different from the one of the Saab 9-4x concept, according to images I found on the web, and also the images shown here a couple of days ago. In the above, the rims are black plastic, while there is a silver inlayed ring close to the gauge itself. In the 9-4x concept, the silver rings are the outmost rims of the gauges.
I also like to add that I must somewhat correct my negative comment on the 9-4x shown here. In fact the dashboard does have a plexiglas cover on the lower parts, and the buttons look much better on the other photograph I have now discovered. Actually, they look as if metallized, not just painted.

Swade, You seem right, I found another image of the 9-4x concept having an identical layout to the above image. That is quite interesting; there are then in fact two differnet layouts (incidently, one with red and one with green fingers)

Talking with the dealer, about the invitations to the Autoshow, they said to me about the new 9-5 to be presented in Frankfurt, as they have the exclusivity.
The tickets for the Autoshow as invitations to the customers or promotionals, should be paid by the dealers that ask for it. Its incredible!!
The Barcelona Autoshow, few weeks ago was nearly dead, big part of the brands said they wont go, but finally it seems the Government give to the brands that participate in the Autoshow some Tax deductions and similar.

O F F T O P I C
I’ve gone to the SAAB-Barcelona site and have read “old” information about the 9-4X.
But anyhow I am quite surprised about the engine the concept is meant to use.
Clasic SAAB 2L Block (86×86) Direct injection, twin scroll turbo and whopping 300 bhp on E85 or 245 bhp on petrol. Which such an engine, I don’t need the Australian V6 (Sorry Swade ;) ).
But it also means, the 2.0T should deliver 250-260 bhp on E85.

I’m sure SAAB are going to tease the hell out of the 9-5, as it will be a long ride to Frankfurt, and the SAAB nuts have to kept going the distance.
It’ll be detail after detail, but we won’t see the whole car before, say late August.
I think it is quite funny how the 9-5 spy pics show a large car that looks outright modest in size from certain viewpoints. It’ll be longer than the 9-5, but then again it doesn’t look like a 5-meter-car.
In any case, it seems smaller and lot more elegant than the Buick that builds on the same platform – I think we won’t have seen seen up-to-date understatement before we’ve seen the NG 9-5. Again, I can only say the 9-5 will be more 9000 than 9-5.

According to this AFP article, there are between 10 to 12 serious interested parties.
What caught my attention was this line: he [Paul Aakerlund] he, warning that any new owner should not cut jobs in Sweden and relocate production elsewhere.
That is an indirect admission that at least some of the seriously interested parties have production capacity outside of Sweden. It is quite possibly in reference to Geely or another Chinese manufacturer, or BMW.

I dont see why BMW would be interested in Saab. But I do like the idea that Saab production should remain in Sweden to maintain the ‘lagom’ that is a big part of Saab and everything Swedish.

For a number of reasons, but mostly brand recognition, engineering resources and synergies with MINI’s FWD platforms. BMW needs a greener brand with a friendlier face and Saab fits the profile. If they ever tried to turn BMW “greener” it would result serious damage to their brand.
Even though BMW is the only “surviving” suitor from those initially rumoured to be interested back in December, I myself would not be too thrilled as they would surely keep Saab at check and a step behind their own cars, much akin to what GM did with Cadillac at the expense of Saab.

Kroum, in what way is Mini compromised to the benefit of BMW? It’s different, not inferior. The problem is that anything out of Mini has to fit a very specific mould. SAAB can be a much more lateral and adventurous brand for BMW should they want it. Plus BMW might learn how to make some really safe cars : P

It’s just that… Koenigsegg is my wet dream. :D It would almost guarantee an Aero X several years down the road.
Besdies, I really can’t wait for the press to start writing how Saabs are just badge-engineered CCXRs, haha. Just a nose-job alright.

15 turbin April 30, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Of course there is a much more sinister implication if owned by BMW. If you buy a SAAB as an anti-BMW gesture then you still buy BMW.
There are many other issues though such as the 9-5 and 9-4X, the mandatory next products for SAAB, being too much in BMWs territory.
Also maybe BMW would close down the SAAB brand and use the factory to make the new Isetta!

16 Thyl April 30, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Why do so many people speculate that BMW could buy Saab? They have spend billions in the Rover adventure, even the Mini is not -from what I hear- the big profit maker, and they can be as green as they please to. E.g., all official BMW cars in Germany have been badged with large information on the side of how little they consume, and BMW is off course involved in the usual research efforts, like hydrogen fuel or hybrid technology.

17 zippy April 30, 2009 at 2:21 pm

kroum, BMWs already have lower CO2 emissions than comparable Saab models. I reckon all this talk of a Norwegian/Swedish consortium of investors will be the way Saab goes.
PS Hows that Turbo X doing?
