Djup Strupe: Internal show-and-tell of 2010 Saab 9-5 happening soon

by Swade on June 26, 2009

Saab have recently distributed a brochure to some dealers, who have been invited to see the 2010 Saab 9-5 and the various other cars in Saab’s future. The display will most likely take place from next month.
The brochure included these watery images of the next 9-5. Click to enlarge.

There was at least one new piece of tech (new to Saab, at least) that hadn’t been mentioned previously as far as I recall.

Just push the start button in the cockpit and you’ll immediately get a new perspective on on-road excitement. Like the new generation of highly efficient turbo engines fuelled by petrol, diesel or bioethanol, the pioneering Saab XWD cross-wheel drive system and the advanced DriveSense system allowing you to adjust the agility of the car with the simple twist of a knob. Not to mention a completely new level of real-life safety, featuring a range of sophisticated driving assistance systems. So prepare for a different and very energetic experience. The all new Saab 9-5 Sedan.

Sounds like fun.
The word going around is that there may be press photos etc of the new 9-5 around a month afterwards.

Looks to have a pretty clean design: I’m loving that face!

correction the left lane news drawing

I’m not sure about the back of this thing. It looks really long. But who knows for sure, until I see a better picture no real judgment can be made.

5 Ascariss June 26, 2009 at 11:14 am

Well the leftlane news image was based off leaked internal images from GM so that is the reason it was correct.
Yes there is a side vent near the side boards. many impressions were missing this feature.
The front grill is not that large as in the blurry image.
As for the length of the car, yes it really is that long.

I look forward to seeing the real pictures.

Thanks Ascariss, the LLN drawing was somewhat underwhelming, but from what additional info we have so far it seems like the real deal will have a lot more character.
We’re getting closer to seeing what surely must be the most anticipated Saab of the past 10 years. Thanks GM. And I’m certain some press images will be leaked to Swade in advance. :)

Don’t we all!!

9 Karen June 26, 2009 at 11:39 am

was studying front ends as identifying designs on my drive today. wondering about the rectangle vs the ovoid versus the Saaby-V. Always thought my 900 was smiling at me.
So, since Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Pontiac (bye-bye) are looking Saabish in the front, this new 9-5 will be a standout, even if I wish it was less snubby in profile. Prefer the earlier front ends.
Now, how do we get people to go buy this 9-5?

10 Markac June 26, 2009 at 11:56 am

I remember something about Koenigsegg saying that they could make the 9-5 even better. I wonder what they meant by that?

Quad turbo charged V8, 899Hp

Yeesh, that rear clip picture is a little frightening. The rear end hangs out a mile past the rear wheels… Maybe it’s just a funky angle. And the DriveSense thing sounds interesting. I just hope it doesn’t make the steering numb. People rave about the current 9-5′s “feeling” of the road through the steering wheel. Good stuff Swade! Thanks for the pics!

13 Alex June 26, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Suspension tuning, more aggressive wheels/tires and a more powerful engine tune. I don’t know what the angle gear/transmission/XWD unit can handle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits 400hp later on. Personally I think they ought to benchmark it off the XF supercharged in terms of performance, handling and quality.
I can also forsee some improvements to the GM interior that though the nicest ever in a Saab, will probably be a bit less than we want it to be.
As to the long rear end, I think it has a lot to do with camera angles and that the car will be much more cohesive than it looks in these watery pictures. I really can’t wait to see this thing both on film and in person.

Alex, have you driven the supercharged XF?
I have, and while it is a very nice and powerful car, I would prefer Saab do not benchmark performance against it, it just doesn’t have “the feel” a Saab should have.
They’re spot on benchmarking the NG9-5 against the A6. Audi is the closest Saab competitor on many levels.

Sorry for the double post… my iPhone keeps stealing my computer’s IP address and and all hell breaks loose whenever it sends out for e-mail! Bah!

17 Tiago do Vale June 26, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I wonder what’s going on behind the front wheel: is it a vent?

18 Ascariss June 26, 2009 at 2:02 pm

yes that is a front vent, it is incorporated into the lower halves of the side doors as well.

19 Sam L June 26, 2009 at 3:39 pm

That’s one long bum! It looks like they might be going for the BMW-esque short front, long back – which does look very nice on a BMW.
And that front image looks fantastic! I’m asuming that’s the aero model (bigger intakes, turbine wheels). Looks pretty mean with the blacked-out grills too, but that might just be because of the blurred image.

20 kuba June 26, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I will be less enthusiastic about the pictures. It looks like an American GM cousin of Saab with the grill and rear part changed to look Saaby (Remember the pictures from Saab factory parking seen on SU a couple of weeks ago). I am not saying it looks bad but I am affraid such design will not last that long as curent model has lasted. I can see a large sedan to compete with Audi and BMW (looking heavy and muscular). The old model was something really different.
Hope the real car looks better.

First official photographs will be distribuated before the 15 juli !!!!

22 Daniel_B June 26, 2009 at 4:44 pm

…AND THAT!!! Is what we all r waiting for :P

23 Me June 26, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Hi Ascariss, it has been long since your last Post :)
Are thos real vents or only design fakes?
Sam L this is not the Aero Front !!
I’m beginning to love the rims of the first picture, and to the DriveSense, i think this is the mysterious Knob at the side of the gear shifter.
Kuba, the NG9-5 doesn’t look like a SAABy Buick LaCrosse, fullstop.
And BTW the last Foto is not a 9-5, it looks like the 9-X Bio hybrid, and to mee, it would be a good looking front for a 3G 9-3, it matches well with the NG9-5.
saablover, I think I can wait another 2 weeks ;)

24 Daniel_B June 26, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Hmmmm. That last shot of the front-end surely is a 9-X BioHybrid or 9-X Air right?

25 saabista63 June 26, 2009 at 5:01 pm

We’ve seen the back already.
It didn’ look very LaCrosse, if I remember correctly.
I think, in the metal this car will look phantastic. Personally, I always like the wagon better, though. It has been like that with the current 9-5, and it’ll be the same with this one, I’d say.

26 Dippen June 26, 2009 at 5:32 pm

soon people soon.things are getting closer…we will see the real thing:)

27 Pedro June 26, 2009 at 5:49 pm

From some angles and in lighter colours the Insignia’s rear overhang looks huge too.
I REALLY like the c-pillar shape and the way it blends into the rear end of the car.

28 Per June 26, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I think the front will be awesome, pretty the same as the AeroX, not so shure about the rear.

29 Baracuda June 26, 2009 at 6:14 pm

The last photo is according to Saab the Aero Version of the NG 9-5 and NOT one of the 9-X Concepts!

30 Pedro June 26, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Aha, great that the 9-X concept’s front end is translating into something people can buy. Good SAAB!

31 Pedro June 26, 2009 at 7:12 pm

@ Baracuda – wait a second… that thing doesn’t have rearview mirrors… sure it isn’t one of the 9-X concepts?

32 Me June 26, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Sorry, but this is not a 9-5.
Look at pedro’s gravatar and look at that picture.
If this is the 9-5 Aero they need a new hood, new fenders news lights and a new fascia, too much too expensive for an Aero.

33 Baracuda June 26, 2009 at 7:35 pm

It’s a painted picture without mirrors. Yes. But the guys at Saab say that this will be the front-end for the Aero Version of the NG 9-5. That’s what the marketing guys. And the original picture has an underlining which is talking about the NG 9-5!

34 Me June 26, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Let’s say it this way, the front from the Aero version will use some hints of this picture.
I supose they don’t have no Aero’s by now, all the prototype looked much the same (non-Aero), so they took the front that looks like the 9-5 Aero.

35 Baracuda June 26, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Yes i think they tell us that this will be the Aero Version and the real thing looks really similar. Thats why this one is only a painted front fascia with a lot of room for speculations. But the real thing should be very near to this one.

36 jc7222 June 27, 2009 at 5:58 am

This one has a Aero X / 9-X front that I hope Saab uses. However, previous spyshots show different headlight housing. The headlight housing in the spy pics appear to show the 9-5 with headlight housing that looks similar to what has been in production on the 9-5 from 97-2005. I REALLY hope that they use this look instead.
