First photos - 2010 Saab 9-5 Sedan AND Wagon

UPDATE: II

These are out there now, so there's no point in having the small ones anymore.

------

Djup Strupe does it again.....

These are the first images that I can confirm are original Saab stock. They look more like CGI's than actual photos of real cars to me, but they're authentic.

There's one of each of the sedan and wagon (which is an absolute stunner if you ask me)

2010Saab9-5officialSU

I have no idea what spec these cars are (eg. Aero or otherwise).

Also, please remember that no matter what you think of these images - they're most likely CGI's and every car looks better in the metal than what it does in photos.

.....which means the road should melt in the presence of this wagon....

2010Saab9-5wagonOfficialSU

I want one of those wagons - NOW!!!!

------

A recap for the unfamiliar:

The 2010 Saab 9-5 is due to come out in sedan form either late 2009 or early 2010. The Motor Show debut will be later this year in Frankfurt.

The wagon is said to be following year after.

The car should be available with a mix of four and six cylinder engines (petrol/BioPower) and a four cylinder diesel. The six cylinder diesel that was planned for the car was cancelled by GM.

Photos of the interior

We also have a full list of colors and features.

Wow, that wagon doesn't look at all like a wagon... Cool design!

Absolutely stunning. Love the end on that wagon.

SAAB's future looking very bright right now. Most pleasing :)

clearly cgi's.. but

THAT WAGON is drop gorgeous!!

Look at the way the opening of hatch on the wagon is shaped up on the roof. Wonder how it looks like when it's open.

Very nice. But am I seeing no black A-pillars on the wagon? Seems weird...

Definately CGI´s, BUT nevertheless great pictures...
Have to agree with Swade that the cars usually looks a lot better in the metal, so this surely looks promising.

Let me say it like this:
When i first saw the 9-4X Concept, I didn´t like it at all. It might be the fact that the "new" design language of Saab was showing on that car which turned out to be more or less the final deal. I just wasn´t ready for that design language on a production car... -yet!
The design of the last Concepts has really grown on me and to be honest I now find the 9-4X is one of the best looking crossovers out there. It is really a car I would consider buying if I was to get a new one. Really.
Now back to topic:
This NG 9-5 (if this is how it´s going to look-I guess it is quite on the spot) is georgeous. Especially the SportCombi. I like it a lot. Fact is that I probably will love it when we finally see it in the flesh. What is more important is that- though it still looks alot like a Saab- I truly believe that this car will attract buyers from others brands. The rear of that Combi looks absolutely STUNNING, and still DNA from the old 9-5 estate (which we all loved)is still there :)
Great work Saab!!
I´m starting to imagine this car in an Aero spec... :)
LOVE the clean look and love the front end!

Hmmmm... where do I order a 9-5 SC Konenigsegg R...?

The back of the wagon looks very sporty and nice and I can't wait to see the tail lights in action. I am a bit sceptical of the sedan. It looks a bit too plain and minimalistic, but I am sure that some real pictures and the real thing will look a thousand times better! :)

wow the wagon looks awesome!!:)

Have to say that I'm bit disappointed. Looking OK, but not marvelous. Hopefully the car looks indeed better in metal.

However I'd like to argue that these pictures are not 100% accurate presentation of the real product. At least the length of the wagon behind the rear wheels is not correct. Compare these for example

http://www.saabsunited.com/upload/images2009/06/from_the_saab_showroom_of_the_future/Saab%209-5%20estate%20covered.jpg

VS.

http://www.trollhattansaab.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2010Saab9-5wagonOfficialSU.jpg

The back in the CGI is clearly shorter...

Have they taken the competition with Audi too literally? That is a massive snout...

You are right Moose, the cgi of the wagon looks more like a 9-3 size!

Wheels on the saloon do not do it justice, the wheels on the wagon I reckon will be Aero and I guess available on the Saloon. That will make it look much better!

I'm for an estate/ wagon. Great looking car. I wonder what it would look like in bright white.

I'm kinda dissapointed here. I know they have worked on this car for quite some time, and being under the GM umbrella infects car design. But I was still hoping for a more scandinavian design, not a turn towards american\german. It has big shapes, big butt, big squares. big snout. Saabs have always had a "quiet" front-end, you didn't always see it coming, but when you saw it you knew what it was.
I really don't like the step towards american\german design, but will be nice to see this car in the flesh. Sometimes car design grows on you...

Regards
Simon

this must be a joke. i can't be believe they copied 1:1 audi's wheels. from distance that car looks to much like an A6.

I think it looks like nothing else on the road. I'll wait for the real thing before judging finally but somehow it appeals to me already.

OH my god I just wet myself.

It's been so long since I saw these pics I really had forgotten how nice this car is.

mark: +1

looking at the small picture, I thought it was an Audi A8...I hope in real it will look more Saabish!

My 2 öre: the wagon's CGI looks a little off with regard to overall proportions when compared to the covered wagon we saw earlier.

People you must understand how having the the body lines visible can trick your mind. Designers have tricks to make the butt look bigger or smaller depending on the end goal but this cannot be seen in the shot with the cover.

A couple interesting things I saw. The rear windshield wiper goes in a different direction on each shot. Also do you think the "MBW" was just an accident? Read B M W:)

Waiting for the real thing is just killing me!! Although most likely CGIs, those two are to drool over. I´d like to have one SC (if that´s what is´s gonna be named) Aero XWD in Cranberry red, pretty please :)

Maybe its not the wagon. Perhpas we see here Photos for a creative Sedan?

WOW. And especially the wagon..

The wheels on the sedan are just not right. I agree with Swade that wheels make a car. And as was mentioned they do look like they've been snagged directly off an A6. Very sad considering Saab's longstanding use of very unique wheels.

Aaahhh... I missed the pictures, Swade removed them :(

Good thing I saved them to my computer:)

A fine looking sedan and a better looking wagon although both have a certain similarity to the corresponding A 6.

I'm with Simon, if these are the real deal i'm dissapointed. Looks a bit like tryin' to show off a fatter snout than everyone else...
But let's wait for the physical steel to get the right impression.

You could also say the turbine rims were taken from a VW passat CC.
Those rims looks different from the A6 ones which I've seen 2 hours ago.

I think Saab had the turbine wheels first. They, as usual, took forever getting it to a production vehicle and someone else copied it.

Swade,
SAAB should have sent those close-ups a couple of days ago, asking you to show only those and no full picture from any Djup Strupe.
If they would work with you, I think you would be willing to cooperate to show only what they want, won't you ?

I guess those who fear DE can be calm now ?

Drat I missed them! Gotta feeling they'll pop up somewhere else though.

May be the closest to the real thing we've seen so far, but fake nevertheless. Official pictures, nooo...?

That makes no sense. Why would Saab have him take down fakes?

@ Markac - see Etienne's post above ;-)

Thanks Pedro. I've seen them now. The wagon definitely looks the best. I'm guessing these must be close to the real thing or Saab wouldn't be upset by them? Perhaps Saab wiil now have to show that the real car is much better? Once a cat gets let out of a bag, it is very hard to stuff it back in!

If they're upset, then it's close to the real deal.

Just want to add that to my eyes, the issue with the wagon CGI is the roofline: the veiled wagon has a more straight roofline (not unlike the current 9-5 wagon), while the CGI appears to have a more rear sloping roofline.

Why doesn't AMS remove the pictures as well. Right now they stand to get the publicity and not Saabsunited!

Wow...the kombi does look great, the way they've treated the rear window/hatch reminds me of the Peugeot 407 wagon, which is also a stunner in my opinion...I need to start saving for my very first SAAB...

Maybe beacause Swade is a private person and AMS not.

Thanks for the URL Etienne (I went to sleep.

Arild, AMS gives Saabsunited full credit and provides a link in the article. Photos still there also AMS has a form where they want to collect readers ideas for New Saab, but I figure the Swedes should have their say in Swedish. Also a poll. Saab as niche company with more interesting cars is leading at almost 60%. 'No future' gets 20%. Sounds like the depression rate in Sweden lifts with Midsommer??

Saab should worry less about what Swade is posting and far more about what shows up on news.google every morning. Suddenly, all the positive links are gone, and all the dark skepticism is showing up today.

If it looks, like that, it's not going to sell. I don't see any "Saab" at all.

About the rims : wait till you see the actual real new premium rims for the new 9-5. Unique imho .

Concerning the pictures :are those recent internal pics from Saab ? Because why use CGI pics when there are actual finished reallife models in their Showroom of the Future ?

lol ive being telling you for 2 years now that the wagon looked better than the sedan lol

ok saab better come out with a little pressrelease with maybe 3 pics! this is not fair anymore been waiting to long now :(

I had a short view of full images earlier today and what I recall the wagon was truly good looking. It still takes some time to get used to new rear spoiler style a´la 9-4X and also the center of the front grille which seems to be somewhat similar to 9-4X too.

Sedan is very close to that AMS image which we´ve seen. I like the coupeish look (the long rear overhang - like good old C900).

I can´t wait to see them in person. I´m also waiting to see 9-4X. Yes. I can´t believe that I just said that but I´m growing on the idea of big bulky SUV Saab. Maybe not for me, but it may be a cool car anyways.

Ahhh...Cars again! These look cool but unfinished. I love the headlights but the grill seem huge. I'm not a wagon fan but the shape is an attention getter! Better looking than the 9-4x.

Thanks Swade. Thanks Saab.

And I think Saab released these to quell questions about K-Segg. This is positive news in a week of negatives. Somebody did good!

Ha, AMS has modified the images AND rewritten their text as well...

I still think the rumoured hatch version will look the best.

Excellent Z! Very nice sketch and it really gives you an idea of the wagon we saw earlier today.

Wow !I saw the cancelled pictures ! Great design, no DE-front and headlights, it is the car I imagined. I think I will change my wagon within the the next time but - may be - when they offer this one I will loose my individuality on german roads.

I was lucky to get a glimpse of the pictures before they were removed! The 9-5 will look terrific!

As I wrote before, the wagon is my first choice. If you try to blend the CGI with the covered wagon on the showroom pictures, you can't but think it's going to be one heck of a car - and that's true of the sedan as well. Very cool, very clear, very SAAB. That's all I can say.

argh!! time zones!

I missed it. I even missed the AMS pics before they modded them!

I feel sick. Been waiting so long!

Did anyone save them to their computer?? email them to me!!

VERY NICE !

This photo shop also looks fine.. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3353/3617829418_a1bb814f09.jpg

yeah, anyone want to email a copy?

Dont worry, if some material has been given away/leaked, then it will be all over the net in a very short time.

still available here:
http://www.vk.se/Article.jsp?article=288219
but probably not for long.

Looks good, the wagon especially.

i hope the big nose thing is due to the perspective of the photo.

Saabluster - you saved them to comp? Did anybody else? Can't believe I don't read SU ONE night and I miss these photos! No big photos on Aautomotorsport either. Would you email?

AGH! I thought they made you remove those water color-y ones and I didn't think I missed anything!! #$&*! the timezone difference! GAH!

woohoo, thanks Jono link still good. Small photos but still can see. WOW wagon hotness. little reverse scoops below front wheels are a nice touch to break up the slabby sides, big nose due to EU pedestrian safety standards maybe? Like the wrap around window turbo football helmet look, that is Saaby. Rear lights are smokin on the wagon. Turbine wheels wicked - give Audi their base A6 wheels back, but don't replace with GM/Pontiac 5 spokes.

I think you're on to something, Z! Great sketch!

About those colors and dimensions...

AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

The dimensions given are those for the *current* 9-5.

Jono - I'm on the East Coast, US, so I thought that the pictures had been deleted everywhere by the time I woke up. So, thanks a million for the link to www.vk.se. I would have been like a junkie without a fix if I could not have seen the pictures!

I think the wagon looks stately, refined, but the sedan... that's hot looking.

I like what I see.

Thanks Jono for the link. I would have missed the pics otherwise since I am on the east coast too.

I am not crazy about the color on the CGI's nor the wheels on the sedan, but otherwise I'd say they look awesome. Both are definitley "head-turner's". Good job SAAB!

Wow, these look stunning! Thanks Jono for saving the day for us East Coasters! :)

The wagon is shockingly sexy, but I'd still go for a sedan. With that 555 hp / 666 lb. ft. torque engine in it. :)

Wow, put me down for the wagon!! No kids, absolutely no need for a wagon, but that is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen and I'm gettin one!

I love the cars, both of them look great, like the chrome around the headlights and like the rear of the SC, looks very good.

BUT.... Am I the only person is slightly underwelmed by this all? It's a great looking car and I love it but its not pushing the envelope perhaps as much as it should.

Somebody please email them to me!

http://saablog.ru/2009/06/26/pervye-oficialnye-foto-2010-saab-9-5/

available here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow thats cool design!!! Very very nice!

NOOOOOOO!!! logged in too late to see the photos!

I missed the pics!!! Can someone please e-mail them!!! Must see!!
Thanks!!!

J King beanofjoy

see my comment above!

BUT.... Am I the only person is slightly underwelmed by this all?
Dan9-1 remember that you are seing this since the Aero X. The Aero X pushed the envelope, but by now Aero X is normal in terms of SAAB design language, and this is why the NG9-5 is not underwelming.

That wagon is HOT!

Yep, the wagon is awesome. Put me down for one.

The wagon almost looks like a cross-over, it definitely has some Infiniti FX feel to it.

I am going to speak up for the sedan as well. I know when we see it for real (and maybe with some more unique wheels) it looks to be a quite unique and beautiful car. The wagon is going to be a great seller I bet.

Chris

I am glad most of you like it, like I mentioned before in the other post, the vent is there to stay.

The car looks even better in person mind you. ;)

The pics are on Saab Central in all their big glory!

Ascariss, do the vents surve any purpose - drag or wind noise reduction?

I like what they've done with the mirrors, too, very neat.

@raquettlaker2 - where are the pictures on Saab Central?

Seems you are quite involved with the car ;)

Wow, I laughed off that quote about GM not wanting the new 9-5 in anyone else's hands, think there might be some truth to it now. Love the vents on the side, the taillights and the mirror detail.

dan, go look in the forums under saab news.

i like the greenish tint in the headlights, very cool.

I spotted the new 9-5 in Gothenburg today, so they are not only driving around Trollhättan! :) To bad it was just a glimpse. I was in a hurry so I couldn't follow it to get a good look at how it was performing on the road.

Looks like Saab took our advice to heart. Good Job Saab!

This is more Buzz than I have seen in a while! Far better than the K-Segg announcement. Hope they tease us more and more often!

Get ready ......... for this:

Looks like Saab took our advice to heart. Good Job Saab!

This is more Buzz than I have seen in a while! Far better than the K-Segg announcement. Hope they tease us more and more often!

Oh poop! I saw the headline and then saw Swades retraction but good job I found them elsewhere credited to SU. The sedan looks quite conventional from that angle but I suspect the side view will show that the window treatment is exactly as the Kombi. Like the new(ish) Jag XK and BMW5 they look much, much better in the flesh.

The Kombi - holy cr*p is that thing gorgeous. In the flesh its going to be bloody gorgeous.

From both pics it looks like Saab is back in business. :)

Or maybe even a hatchback?!

As already mentioned, the wagon looks sexy as hell. The color on the sedan looks awful IMO. I can see it looking mighty sexy in black :)

Also, I presume this is not the Aero model showing? Due to the front bumper?

It's curious that the front bumper doesn't really mach the blurry pictures previously released:

http://www.saabsunited.com/upload/images2009/06/internal_show_and_tell_of_2010_saab_9-5_coming_s/Saab9-5WC-3.JPG

Maybe that's for the Aero?

One word: LOVE

Well besides the openings for the fog lights, and the shape of the side mirrors, the car looks exactly as Leftlane News said it would last fall. They obviously had seen this image before, as it is the same color and wheel design as their sketch.

http://photos-b-0.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs114.snc1/5142_95323625757_506630757_1960489_7925436_n.jpg

Whilst like most, I like seeing tantalizing images of forthcoming cars I think SU is spoiling the possible build up being created by Saab by posting these images. I am not surprised that the image has now appeared all over the net and other sites, wouldn't be surprised that it now appears on Saabhuy, Saabhistory and there was the new one you mentioned the other day talk Saab, all jumping on the band wagon.

I assume this leak was somewhat intentional, to keep us talking about about what matters -the new cars- and not the accessory -speculations about Koenigsegg's deal...

That is a picture of the 9-X Air not the 9-5.

It looks awesome!!

I just received some info, it seems during the last week, 8 units of the new 9-5 arrived in the GM/Opel Figueruelas plant in Zaragoza(SPAIN). Could be, they are trying to know and catch everything they can before the company changes to a new owner. Internal spionage?? This could demonstrate the big concerns from GM about the good qualities of the car.

The second option is, the launch of the car is coming and is going to be done soon and in Spain.

regards

James

My god she's beautiful in red!

;)

Saab dreams seem to be moving toward reality! Hey, maybe Saab will partner with Trollspeed for some special performance models (It doesn't hurt to keep dreaming)!!

OK, I'm a Wagon Guy. I drive a wagon because I often need a large cargo area for my stuff. But I don't like this trend of devouring the rear cargo area of wagons in the name of "styling". Yes, the CGI of that 9-5 wagon looks sorta sexy in a way, but if that's the way the new 9-5 wagon will really look, then there's no way in hell I'll consider it as my next car. Sorry. Form must follow function.

I think the leak was a peek, to get us all excited. It worked well for me! I only wish we could see more please.

I am ready to order one as soon as I can. That has to be good news for Saab.

I bet the dealers and their sales people are excited too!

Ha,ha, they've misspelled BMW on the license plate!

I wonder what the sloping roof is doing to the headroom in the back? Looking at all the pictures floating around I couldn't escape the impression that this is going to be a huge car. Hopefully Saab-K'egg will realize the need for small cars too, a 9-1 with enough space in the engine bay for the 9-5 engine maybe? Worked for my Viggen.

Helo Beautiful!!!
Swade! You made my day!
Thank U.

@ racersaaben - maybe someone was taking the car to SAAB's offices in Mölnlycke?

AS ALWAYS, SAAB NAILS THE WAGON DESIGN!

SAAB WAGONS ARE THE BEST LOOKING WAGONS IN THE WORLD, NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE!

AND YES, I KNOW I AM YELLING!

Pictures still available at Västerbottens-Kuriren:
http://www.vk.se/Article.jsp?article=288219

It's a regional paper up north in Sweden. I have seen AMS articles there before. Maybe they have some agreement with AMS to republish some of their material. Weird though that AMS didn't demanded that they change the article to reflect the new one.

If somebody wants to e-mail me the photos, please help me out! I logged in too late! Andrew.Baculy@gmail.com Thanks!!

Andrew I send you the pictures.......

Its interesting to see the side view, with those strange holes after the front wheels, let's see if its onlye some sort of new design feautre or some aerodynamic feature.

The front chrome sorround of the lights, in the real view it will look brighter than in those pictures, taking a look at the pitcures with the cover, the chrome its too marked.

regards

I was in a meeting. Would you(Edusaab) or anyone else PLEASE email me the pics: jcsaab2@hotmail.com

Thanx

+1 Indeed Volvo D. Great looking wagon. I've got faith that the load area will be big enough too.

Thank you so much!

I love the wagon but, the sedan is really bland. I hope that it will look better in the flesh. I would still buy it but, I am a Saab nut. I am just concerned that if it does not look better than that in the flesh that Saab will have a big problem trying to win converts.

Oh and the rims on the wagon are very HOT!

Am LOVING the wagon...the most beautiful wagon ever built. Doesnt look too long, proportion is jz wonderful!!! Luckily there are still other sites tat we cud still c the pics...tot I missed it for good.

I hope it looks different in metal, as of right now I have to admit(and I don't want to admit it!!) Opel Insignia looks much nicer.........im sorry ,I'll think that until I see the real saab wagon....
the front lacks something.......it's too plain ,hopefully the aero version will add some "claw" to it.........also (and i hope) that the cgi and the covered versions differ a little bit, because the covered version seems to be (from what we can see)looking much better than the CGI version...........

Uh-oh, you made them mad, didn't you Swade?

If so, thanks for taking one for the team. The 9-5 is definitely a looker! Hopefully they're not too upset about it. Feed the beast, fellas, just like he said. You know it's gotta be done one way or the other.

I can understand better now what a few commenters meant when they said the 9-5 was well-disguised. That's quite different once the checkered pattern has been removed.

I disagree wholeheartedly with some of the responses here about the new 9-5 reveal. These look really extraordinary and like Swade have already pointed out, It will look even 10 times better in the metal. Saab's have generally never been attractive cars in CGI's or early production models. It isn't until you can witness every aspect of the details vs the design language when you begin to appreciate how unique a Saab can be. I too am loving the Combi version of this vehicle. It looks like nothing else on the road and if ever made into a 9-5x could prompt Saab to down scale the 9-4x in the future to a more compact CUV in the vain of the RAV 4 instead. A 9-5x would be a very attractive variant to the norm of large SUV's and CUV's out there. Great job Swade on the scoop of the photos by the way!

The wagon is stunning...BUT

I cannot buy it unless the V6 petrol does 40MPG and I am not buying a 4 cylinder diesel for a car this size.

Saabinsegg..please put a decent size diesel in this car. I know a 4 cyl will do the job but it is the way it does it that counts for a vehicle this deserving.

Imagine the sedan after a crash test. Will you be able to say it is a Saab? Hope the car looks better in reality. Apart from the grille and griffins on the wheels nothing indicates it is a Saab (put a sheet of paper to cover the front of the car). There is nothing derrived from the current model (look at three generations of Renault Laguna for example - all are different but all are clearly Lagunas. Every new model has something from the old one. Or think of Alfa 159. This is an Alfa Romeo car all round - every part of the car says it is another Alfa.)

Other thing: the grill of new 9-5 is too big (This is what I meant in the other place writing about an American cousin). I like Saabs with more "sporty" front (9000, 9-5 "classic", 9-3ss.)

New 9-5 is not a bad car, it looks OK... but...too much GM influence. Good thing is that when it is on sale the second hand current 9-5 will get cheaper - maybe I'll buy one...

It looks nice. I just hope the sidevents serve some kind of function, otherwise I would feel a bit embarrassed as an owner.

The grille is a bit massive for my taste. It looks as if it has been bulked up for no good reason. Again: Does this serve any purpose? The 900 and 9000 were quite narrow at the front. My MY08 9-3 is more narrow than this, and that too feels too massive for me.

Remember Jeremy Clarkson's cockometer? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/jeremy_clarkson/article589163.ece

I fear that the 9-5 sedan is at risk here. I crave driving the best Saab, but don't feel the need to brag about it. Well... I'll brag to my dad, who also reads this blog, but that's about it. :D (To dad: If I manage to buy the new 9-5, you can borrow it any time -- no problem)

P.S. Wagon/Estate looks much more saabier (-:
Let's patiently wait for the real pictures of real vehicles.

I went to the spyshots again through Google graphics and.... Look at the mirrors for exaple - completely different. The line of the camouflaged car is much better - it is lighter and more Swedish than what we can see in the pictures "leaked" from Saab AB. I begin to think this "leak" was on purpose to make some noise among Saab fans and the real thing will be really BEAUTIFUL!!!

kuba,

I don't suppose there's any way that I can stop people from speculating, but these were in no way, not in your wildest dreams, leaked deliberately by PR staff at Saab.

Anyone cares to hesitate a guess as to how effective that rear spoiler will be?

My current main complaint with my 9-3 SC is that the rear window gets dirty very fast. Hirsch says their rear spoiler diverts a portion of the air downwards, thus counteracting the turbulence that normally trails the SCs. The result is a cleaner rear window.

From the shape of things, I guess they are setting the new 9-5 wagon up for some serious Hirsch action too.

Anyway, these pictures have done their job: more than 100 comments!!! Nice to have a place to talk about . Thanks Swade.

Hi Rune, thank you for the cockometer, It seems like Mr. Clarksson really knew why people buy SAAB's.

To the rear spoiler, the Hirsch Spoiler, as I can see on the pictures at the Hirsch site has a slit between the roof and the spoiler. Some of the Air coming from the roof of the car, gets sucked though this slit and goes down parallel to the rear window, this diverges some of the dirt coming from the road. On the 9-4x and 9-5SC I can't see this slit, this would make the spoiler more effective in terms of aerodynamics, but you get more dirt on the rear window.
So, I had to have a better look at the spoiler to tell.

Hopefully The GM generic doorhandles will not make it to the real car.

Sorry boys. Audi looks much better. This is not gonna raise Saab up.

I believe these images are totally and utterly fake.I see no reason why saab would waste time to do mountain landscapes and poor renderings like this, for what purpose other than to play games with us?

-The low-air-intake at the front doesn't match the fuzzy images supposedly to go into the marketing brochures posted
earlier this week.
-The side mirrors are totaly generic, and can not be the actual ones.
-The front hood doesn't have any of the curved dent
that any of the concept cars have or even the latest 9-3, making this look like something from 2005 not 2010.
-The B-pillar in black between the doors seems too
petruding, the saab designers must have been smarter
than this.
-The airintake on the side of the door seem totally
wrong, it neither follows the aero-x style or the 9x biohybrid/air. Whats going on?
-The rims look really ordinary on the first photo, and on the sportswagon they look like something from nicked Aero-x.

Looks are debatable and a matter of personal taste. However, Audi do not share Saab's proven safety record where Saabs score consistently well. The old 9-5 was/is exemplary, and if Saab says the new 9-5 is even better, then I believe them.

Besides, if everyone else drives an Audi... Then I will smile even more while driving my Saab.

I hope these pictures are old computer images and that the real thing has got the über-cool head lights from the Aero-X / 9x BioHybrid / 9x Air concepts:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3660/3382434630_70594ef649.jpg?v=0

Well, this one looks like the one we've been waiting for all this long time. Both look awesome and very much looking like a true Saab !!! I better start dreaming on some plans as a worthy companion to the X will be sharing my garage once this is released. Seriously, I will find it hard to choose either as both are bloody mighty smart and absolutely splendid looking. On the practicality the wagon will suit my family needs more than a sedan. Dreaming does not cost a cent, so I'll keep going !!!

It seems more of a "mainstream" Saab then we are used to as Saab adepts. Or should i say as we would like it to be. It guess it will appeal to a broader audience (not only auctioneers, doctors and intellectuals), judging on the reactions. I always drove Saab because it was mildly understated. Hope that Saab will succeed in maintaining that stigma.

The overall look has a bit of an Audi A8/American/German feel to it. (The Skoda comments can not be taken seriously)
But then again, it doesn’t lack that "plain" but refined Scandinavian Saab design, either. I must say it looks rather smart, especially when you take a closer look at the designing of the front lights, vents, mirrors the c-style, and the beautiful window. Impressive, to say the least. Hopefully it looks even better in real life. Omens sure make me hopeful.

Rune (and Jeremy Clarkson) +2

wonder how costly it would be to streamline that front-end tooling before launch?

The difference is when you walk in a delaer to enquire about an Audi they look at you like you are a piece of cr*p as personal experience has shown. Saab dealers are very friendly.

Audi's are just four ringed VWs anyway.

Haha, I like that Jeremy Clarkson article. He seems to really like Saab. I love his review of the '04 9-5 Aero.

Totally agree with zippy about Audi dealers! It seems they have it in guidelines in every country - "make a client feel like cr*p unless he pays a lot (in that case just use flattery)"

I've looked into these photos more thoroughly and compared them to previous photos from the Saab museum and carscoop stuff. I uploaded the result here:

Seems like CGI are really very close, for example the transition from black to chrome bevel on the rear door windows. Exactly like on the actual car! The images are very accurate on details. However there are some differences, the mirrors are the example, and there were no air vents behind the front wheels on the test-drive cars.

My opinion is that both test-drive and these images differ slightly from what's under the cover, but you can get the point.

Well looking at these CGIs again after more than 24 hours, I think I can begin to see why Saab aren't to happy about them. I believe they are quite far from how the actual car looks. Certain parts of them look to be a little out of proportion and the blunt and bluff nose, just looks too heavy. The lack of the traditional "clamshell" does the design no favours either, and the (aforementioned) GM generic doorhandles only serve to cheapen the package. There are still some nice styling clues but the overall look is both patchy and messy which further convinces me that these are quite early pictures and not meant to be viewed by potential customers. I continue to believe that the new 9-5 will truly be a car worth waiting for even if I am somewaht dismayed by these 'early' images.

The fact that these are CGI's and people are saying that an Audi looks better is just ridiculous. Wait till you see it in the flesh first then judge, please. Also people citing GM's influence as the reason this does not look like a true Saab is also crazy. Saab are at a new chapter in the companies life and need a fresh take on the Swedish design. Are you telling me if you saw this car in the metal sitting next to a Opel Insignia, You could tell they are derived from the same platform? They look nothing alike at all! Cars constantly need more air so the larger grille is fine. So are the side vents! The tires are constantly dispelling air that is coming from underneath the car so this will improve the efficiency and aerodynamics of the car. How come Audi can have a front grille that goes down to the fog light and that's OK. But for a Saab, oh this is way to large. People, Saab said they were going to incorporate the design of the Aero-X into the future of their cars and here it is! Oh by the way, the grille on the Aero-X was huge and you guys loved it very much!

the 9-5 dash will be a revelation. I just walked by the only Audi that I truly love to see, the 2-seater TT. This hood was down so I had a close-up look at the dash. very clean and elegant, and lovely use of the Audi logo circles for all the controls. Excellent balance between controls and 'white space' of dash. speaking as a female former graphic designer.

no, did not climb in for driver-eye view. tempted.

Fine. If the big grille and the sidevents serve a purpose, then I, for one, am happy.

But this makes me question why my 9-3 has the grille it has. There is the obligatory opening in the middle... Then it has those two small black areas on the side, that looks like similar openings, but are instead just for show. (I think Hirsch said that a balance must be struck between getting air inside to the engine and keeping dirt on the outside - - but I could easily remember that wrong)

As for the sidevents down by the front tire, won't it get incredibly dirty? There is already lots of slush being kicked up by the wheel in winter, but now all that slush will be even more directed towards the sides of my car?

ck1x: Have you seen the new 9-5? Are those sidevents even active?

The 900 had something near the rear that looked like air intakes. Big sports cars at the time needed more air for their engines, and scooped it from the side. For all I know they still do. But on the 900 it was all show AFAIK. And that is a bit cheesy.

My next car will undoubtedly be a Saab, I just want to learn more about it first.

Current Audi designs are very flashy, but IMO lack substance. Genius marketing campaign along with some of their sharp new features made for a very good first impression, but the more I see them on the road, the less impressed I am.

We currently own an Audi, but my wife and I agree that it'll be the last one we ever purchase.

Why leak a crappy Photoshop job like the wagon? It's not even a 3d rendering but the pencilwork of someone with a Wacom board and too much time on his or her hands hands.

I'm not going to have opinions until I see real pictures.

I think what might be throwing some people off, may well be the colors that both of these models are shown in here. They are kinda blah colors and don't show off the lines and stance of the car that well. Maybe seeing them in a Titan Grey or Snow Silver would be more attractive... The color really are Bland!

People at Saabsunited seem to be very high on Audis, as if they are the benchmark in the automotive industry. In the past 7 years i have known 9 different people, both friends and family, who have owned Audis (all purchased new). 8 of 9 of those owners have had serious mechanical issues with their cars causing the majority of them to get rid of them prior to reaching 60,000 miles.

The design of Audis at one time were very unique and beautiful, but i think they are getting outdated and ordinary. I live in the Northeast United Stated and BMW'S, Mercedes, and Audis pretty much dominate the luxury market not because of their quality, design, or they are the ultimate driving machines, they dominate because they are status symbols. As Saab was in the late 1980's with all the Yuppies.

I do not know if the same is true for the rest of the world, but most Americans that purchase luxury/near luxury automobiles, do not know the difference between the engine and the steering wheel. Most people driving Mercedes, BMW'S, Audis are women who use their cars to go get their nails done, go to the country club, and need to impress their neighbors!
As a SAAB enthusiast, I prefer Saabs not to be a status symbol, but a reflection of someone who is intelligent, concened about safety, and has a passion about their cars. As an American I am embarrassed what GM has done to Saab, but it is typical of American industry, the Europeans are and always will be much more advanced in the Automotive indusrty. I have owned 4 Saabs, all pre GM, and i will finally purchase the first non GM product available in Saab showrooms!

It is a very exciting time for this wonderful car company, just be patient, and Saabs will once again get the respect they once had!!

New Saab advertising campaign???? "Most people driving Mercedes, BMW'S, Audis are women who use their cars to go get their nails done, go to the country club, and need to impress their neighbors!"

actually, Stansaab, you forgot to include Lexus.

from the female former 'yuppie' living in the Northeast U.S. who has been driving ONLY Saabs since 1976 because of my intial concern about safety, and then passion combined with a designer's appreciation of the pre-GM dash and control designs. CanNOT stand looking at the current showroom Saab dashboards.

The Audi TT is a nice looking sports car (not that I would ever buy one), and I stand by my designer's assessment of the TT dash I saw up close today.

Let's all try to get the other 49.9999% of American women to at least consider walking into a Saab dealer when this 9-5 arrives, sassuming they can find one. Or at least keep them from talking their husbands out of looking at Saab.

What would be wrong if 100,000 new buyers bought Saab because it is a status symbol?

The more I look at the drawings, the more they contradict the photos we've seen of the real car, from recent media test drives and from the sheet covered cars in the showroom.

Makes me wonder, if they are from Saab, why where they made? And when?

They don't look too bad, but don't start believing that they represent the real car in any deeper sense.

They did the same thing with the 9-3 CGIs: those CGIs gave a general idea of what the 9-3 would look like, but weren't quite right in the details, and the 9-3 ended being much better in the metal.

It makes sense, I guess: they never loose the element of surprise from the actual presentation.

I agree, I've seen two new Alfa Mito's (Mitoes/Mitae?) one in metallic dark silver and one in red, the red one is owned by a guy down the road and looks ok, but the colour doesn't show off the lines that well, whereas the silver showed off the bonnet lines etc better

Rune, SAAB's upper Grille has had 3 parts since the 99/900.
If you follow those grilles from the 900 till the latest 9-3 you will see a evolution and not a revolution. But since the 9-3SC concept, the central part of the grille has become independent. For example on Maurer 9-X the lower lines of the central part and the side parts of the upper Grille were on the same height, but since the Aero-X the side parts of the upper Grille end at the height of the Chrome Bar at the middle of the central upper Grille.
You can believe me or not, but the 9-5 upper Grille size is only stylistic, lets say the Aero-X DNA. most of the Air the car needs comes though the lower Grille, in every modern car.
In fact, you could in Norway close the upper Grille of your 9-3 without having no overheating problems. As I don't think 40°C - 50°C are usual in Norway ;). You should then have a better mileage, but this also depends on how you drive.

I'm afraid, but I still can't imagine the side vents do really serve a purpose, so I also expect them to be design driven. They are a nice design feature, imho, they give character to the side view, but that is all, and anybody who has seen the real flesh can teach me wrong.

Martin, suggesting that these are chops and fakes after Swade has explicitly stated that these are scans of a brochure distributed to dealers is offensive and diminishes the risk he took posting these online. Some people are just never satisfied, eh!

Ck1x - thanks for clarifying the purpose of the side vents. I was kind of suspecting that, but good to get a second opinion.

Im still saying the wagon is, in fact, a hatchback.

Beautiful Photos and it will probably be a beautiful car. It really doesn't matter until the Edmund's editors get a hold of it. They will run their usual comparisons to the BMW. Just once I'd like to see the Saab beat this challenge. The past offerings have really just been warmed over G.M. products. I hope Koenigsegg can make Edmund's editors smile and agree that the car performs as good as it looks.

Rob, i never suggested that they are fake. They are however "chops" or "CGI" or what you like to call them (not plain photos), and there are obvious details that we will not see in the real car (like the shape of the mirrors). Maybe I'm missing something, but as far as I know Swade never said they were broshure scan.

But no, I'm not satisfied - you are right about that. :)

(Sorry, I meant Kroum, not Rob. By the way: my dissatisfaction with these pics seem to be shared by Saab. I don't think we will see these pictures distributed officially. But I can be wrong, however unlikely ;) )

Always difficult to make judgements just from two pictures. Nevertheless, I like to make just two glimpse remarks:

-I can only hope that the aerodymics is good, despite these huge inlets, and that this strange hole on the side serves an aerodynamic purpose.

-I cannot believe that the wagon is for real, since that would mean that upon every minor contact of the rear with a different car, you might well have a dent in the tailgate, which in the image is flush with the bumper. That would be a bad design decision, even worse than to get rid of these (though ugly) black plastic protectors on the side and bumpers. (I can hardly image how many more scratches I would have without them)

These two CGI's are indeed exciting but the covered real 2010 9-5 photos are where you need to look to get the correct overall proportions. The wagon in particular is shaping up to be one fantastic looking car. When I look at these images plus the covered showroom photos I get real excited!!

I'm hoping SAAB didn't go too crazy with the snout design as in these CGI's--it's just too overkill. Makes more sense on the SUV design but not on a refined euro sedan.

I am loving the rear-end design and we now have a really good sense about.

The one thing that I'm worried about is the interior. Those earlier photos scare the crap out of me. I just don't feel they are SAAB-ish at all. I'm hoping those spy shots are not even close to the real interior.

As an current Aero 9-5 wagon owner, I'm hopeful and excited about Saab's future.

I agree: the shown covered 9-5 wagon does not at all have the proportions of this posted CGI at the rear. The covered real car looks far bigger and fatter. About the sedan I am asking myself what the difference in appearance is between the outgoing 9-5's and these babies, I'd rather call it a large make over face lift type of change (that's for the visible part). The real news I hope will be in the rear section of this car: larger, longer, slicker. Nevertheless, I like what I see. Most important is however the feel of the car, the quality of it all. If that matches the bimmers, 4Os and MB, then we're talking.

I really like the LED strip on the foglight housings

Friend of mine says that the wagon on the picture isn't the one he saw in the flesh...then again, he might be wrong (-; It's stunning however. I don't suppose there are two of them, one estate, one wagon, or are there?

The 'photos' look a bit odd, a bit of photoshopping perhaps? If they can sort out some of the radius issues around the DLO and Backlight I think the wagon version could be looking quite cool.

I like how they are revisiting the sedan-coupe Saab - I think the rear will be quite interesting.

Looks promising! I hope the new 9-5 has a distinct C-pillar, just as the current version. I think that the intersection between the C-pillar and the front-to-back sweeping line of the current 9-5 is by far the most sexy Saabiness in the current line-up.

not every car looks better in person.

look at the nissan maxima, it looks good on picture, but not in person.

"look at the nissan maxima" - I'd prefer not to.

The Maxima looks good on pictures? Really? Show me them. ;)

hehehehe :p

The Maxima is a very unattractive car. Nissan has gone way off the deep end lately as far as designs go. Another thought came to me as I was looking at these pictures more. It would be a very cool feature that not even Audi has on their sedans. Those side vent outlets could very well have ducts that are channeled from the engine bay by way of drafting for means of enhancing the flow of hot air out of the engine compartment. I would rather it end up something of this nature than an aerodynamic treatment.
