EnG – Mystery vehicle revealed

July 26, 2009 in Troll Stuff

Thanks for all who played along with my little guessing game.
As you may recall, I wrote that I was driving a unique vehicle this past week, and I invited you to guess the identity. Here were the criteria:
1. It is a gas-electric hybrid.
2. It was manufactured by a division that was a part of General Motors at the time of manufacture.
3. It has some of the best seats that I’ve ever encountered on any car. I still like the seats in the 9-5 a bit better, but these are darn good.
I put about 1200 miles on this vehicle over the course of the week — much more than typical. I drove from Nashville to Louisville, Kentucky, then from Louisville to Indianapolis, Indiana, then from Indianapolis to Chicago, and then on a loop through Chicagoland that included St. Charles, Illinois and Gary, Indiana. St. Charles and Gary are about 65 miles (100 kilometers) apart, meaning that I did a fair amount of city/suburban driving within that stretch. I got intimately familar with it, in other words.
Brian and JK get credit for “correct enough” answers. Well done!
For the answer and photos, take the jump!

Saturday morning snippets – Saab 9000 interior reborn

July 25, 2009 in Saabology

Many many MANY thanks to Tiago for the new banner at the top of the site.
Groovy, huh?
There’s more where that came from, too :-)
——
1,000 words from Dan P on the 2010 Saab 9-5 interior.
9-5v9000interior.jpg
——
HD video of Marcus Gronholm conquering Pikes Peak in his 800hp, turbocharge 2 litre Ford.
Ford are really kicking some big goals during this automotive meltdown. They’ve recently announced some smaller four cylinder engines to be developed for family sedans, too. Another winning move, and in the Saab tradition I must say.
——
Attention 2007 Saab owners:

The 2007 Saab 9-3 was being investigated after General Motors told the agency of “a certain number” of under-hood fires that apparently began near the ignition coil.

——
This one’s of some concern.
It seems Saab’s advertising, in the UK at least, could still be done under the GM umbrella. Here’s hoping they have to go to Sweden for final approval.

General Motors UK has appointed McCann Erickson Birmingham to handle its retailer marketing account for Vauxhall, Saab and Chevrolet….
….The estimated value of the account is thought to be around £30m.
McCann’s Birmingham will be tasked to deliver all above and below the line national tactical and retailer communication activity for the three automobile brands, working alongside media agency Carat.
It will also be responsible for co-ordinating the marketing of 697 UK retailers and managing a team of regional marketing consultants.
It is understood that the advertising agencies for the specific carlines remain unchanged.

UK advertising has been a lot more palatable than some other regions, but still, retained associations with GM in almost any field seem to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
It also goes to show just how much money has to be poured into creating effective advertsing to sell cars. This is not a business for finger-snap solutions.

So who wants a Saab 9-5 now?

July 24, 2009 in Saabology

Serious question.
Serious potential buyers only, please.
Are you now considering the purchase of a Saab 9-5 in 2010?

It’s details details details with this car.
I love it more and more every time I see stuff like this.

Again, the lighting on the controls. And the surface of that center console – absolutely brilliant. I can’t wait to see this.
And for those wondering where the night panel button went……

This car is looking better and better with every viewing.
Now all they’ve got to do is get this K-Segg deal done, get it on show in Frankfurt and get it on sale.
Can’t come soon enough.

Saab 9-3x – the future Saab you can order now!

July 24, 2009 in News

When this photo popped up on my Flickr feed a few days ago, I got a little excited. It’s a Saab 9-3x and a beautiful Arctic White convertible and what’s significant, of course, is that it’s sitting out front of a dealership.
Saab9-3xandConv.jpg
I think this one is a promotional vehicle that’s doing the rounds. It’s not on display for sale as far as I know.
The Saab 9-3x is due for wider distribution in Europe in late-ish August, so it shouldn’t be too long before you can see one at your local dealership for youself.
I contacted a dealer in England and he’s expecting the 9-3x to land in the showroom late August and says that Saab GB are slowly gearing up for a higher profile campaign. Things have been low-key due to uncertainty about Saab’s future, but with a deal just over the horizon, it’s getting closer.
Saab9-3xSiteGB.jpg
The Saab 9-3x has it’s own section on the Saab GB website and recently, the car was showcased – literally – at Motorexpo.
Saab9-3xMotorexpo.jpg
Markus, the guy who provided the photo at the top wrote this to me a few days ago:

Hey Swade,
….after my trip to Sweden four weeks ago where we saw a lot of 9-3x’s, I got my hands on one today.
I can only say it’s an absolutely amazing car. It was a 9-3X XWD 2.0T Biopower. The ride is a little higher than the normal 9-3 not much but you can feel it. The suspension is absolutely great. The car rolls so quite and comfy. It’s all in all a very cool car.

Very encouraging indeed.
You can apparently order a Saab 9-3x in many European markets right now, though a test drive won’t be available until the cars are on the showroom floor.
It sounds like that won’t be too far away and with the Koenigsegg deal put to bed and the 9-5 hoopla in the background, hopefully people will soon get to see how good this car – that they can order right now – really is.

2010 Saab 9-5 Snippets

July 24, 2009 in Saabology

You’ve probably already seen these from the links in comments (damn sleep!!) but Swedish mag Vibilgares has published some great studio hi-res shots of the Saab 9-5.
These are massive and I fully expect them to be wallpapering computer screens around the world in quick time.
There are six in total, including the front lights and interior all lit up. Here’s my favourite of the morning.
Saab_9-5-ovanVibil.jpg
Why is this my favourite?
There’s a lot of subtle styling cues in this car. This view seems to show – to me at least – a respectful nod to the rear window and boot lid of the Saab 99 (OK, mostly the bootlid, and it’s more obvious in another shot, but I like this angle. Sue me).
——
A note I received about the speedo-within-a-speedo.

… its moving while you are driving. It shows the speed. For the first 30 seconds it looked kind of “different”, but then I got used to it and at the end of the day I really loved it. You get a absolutely instant reading of speed, with a supershort glance.
Otherwise you have to find the needle and follow it to the numbers and … yes, its in the middle of 60 and 40 and that means that I am driving at correct speed, somewhere close to 50 km/h. Takes two seconds. The new “speedo” takes 0,1 second to read and understand.

——
A great comment from Ralf22 that got plenty of “+1″ activity the other day (btw, not a fan of the +1 thing, but whatever works for ya……)

Let’s take a look back in history:
.
- Not many SAAB-fans greeted the 9000 as a “real” SAAB (and was’nt it this project with Fiat and …). Over the Years the look improved and the last series was a nice car. But never will it be a DESIGN-ICON like the original 900!
- And I remember, back in 1993, my girlfriend of that time nearly cried every day, “why don’t you buy a BMW, this SAAB 900 is SO UGLY!” Many people had absolutely no feeling for this car – but I loved it. This crazy, absolutely stunning, really cool design.
- Yes, the group of enthusiasts was too small, then SAAB needet GM for backing. I was very dissapointed of the 1994 model (quality and design).
- Then came the 9-5 in 1997, and when I bought one in 1998 the neighbours son said: “what a nice OPEL you drive” … Later I had the first 9-5 AERO and it was great fun driving this car. The design had kind of “charme” but was this really GREAT CAR-DESIGN? Not a real “classic”, I think. (But good enough for me.)
- Today, I think my actual 9-3 Hirsch Sport-Combi feels very “saabish” and I like it.
- SAABs design concepts 9-3X, AEORO X, … have the feeling of great design icons. They are real STATEMENTS OF ART.
- NOW, SAAB enthusiasts: WHAT DO YOU WANT? It’s a real wonder, that SAAB isn’t absolutely DEAD yet! The GM-people had NO feeling for the great potential of this brand.
- I think there is a chance, that the Koenigsegg-SAAB-future is yet the best to come. When they meet the point, wow! SAAB could become the coolest little brand of all! (But please: not TOO small …)
- Now I look once and again at those pics of the new 2010 SAAB 9-5. The AUTOZEITUNG-pics are really bad car-photography, the AUTOBILD-images are much better. You have to see it in real, to get a feeling for this car. Even the original 9-3 Sport-Combi looks a little “plump” from some angles on pictures. BUT (as a designer myself), I know: this new car has the potential to become a design-icon. It follows it’s own rules. It is a statement of timeless elegance and dynamic power. It stands on it’s own. Such an improvement to the actual 9-5 (the re-design was a nice try, but never fitted really …).
- SAAB-enthusiasts, WHAT DO YOU WANT? Did you ever hear of LOYALTY? SAAB will NOT live whithout you!
- I say it again: MY NEXT CAR – A SAAB! Let’s help SAAB into a great future … give them the chance, to create those stunning SAAB-Koenigsegg-cars!

I suppose the correct response from me would be “+1″

Till has a Saab-ish kind of day…..

July 23, 2009 in Saabology

Till D is a regular here at SU. He lives in Germany and this afternoon he shot me an email about his day.
It brought a smile to his face (despite damage to his 9-5 Combi). It brought a smile to my face, too, and I thought I’d share it here and maybe it’ll bring a smile to your face, too.
——
Hi Swade,
I went to my dealer Andi yesterday, to get my 9-5SC fixed.
At SU so many are asking for a BMW basher – I’ve got one but now I need two new doors and lots of paint (see pic).
BMW basher.jpg
So I bought a copy of Auto Zeitung, took a look at the 9-5 article as we sat for a coffee. We really liked it though all of us were asking for a hatchback. Maybe because there is an article on the Audi A5 in Autozeitung…
……So I had a glimpse at the future of Saab.

We went out and I was waiting to get my replacement car for the next few days. Andi drove out of the garage with a big smile in a 9000i and I think my smile grew even bigger. I’ve included some pics. Sorry for the quality, I had only my iPhone. If I read it correct it’s registration date is 1990.
IMG_0099.jpg
He told me that they got the 9000 and it’s in such a good shape (only 120k kms) that they decided to keep it for replacement. And (though I wouldn’t have thought it) most of his customers like to get it for a day or two if their car is in service for they had one years ago.
IMG_0100(2).jpg
Same with me – I had a ’89 9000CD about eight years ago and though this one has no turbo and is rather a base model the feeling was back and reminded me why I fell in love with Saab.
IMG_0101.jpg
I’ll have to thank my dealer for keeping a part of the Saab heritage and refreshing my memories…
So I had a reminder today of Saab’s history (as well as a glimpse of its future – SW).
Really a Saab day, even though I picked up my new Peugeot delivery car in the morning. By the way: it has something quite similar to a Sentronic… ;-)
Cheers
Till
——
There really is something great about getting into an old Saab again after a while.
I especially like this generation of the 9000 as it’s the model I had my first Saab experiences with. If I had the space and the money for a Saab collection, the a 9000 Carlsson from this generation would be right near the top of the list.
Thanks for the reminder, Till!!

(Brief) reactions from Saab about those 2010 Saab 9-5 photos

July 23, 2009 in News

I know there’s a cynical crowd out there who thing that the leaking of those 2010 Saab 9-5 photos was a ploy concocted by Saab to generate some interest and enthusiasm.
I don’t know how to convince you about this, but I’ll try.
I can tell you first of all from my own brief email communication with Eric Geers yesterday that he was not too happy about it. Later, he was a little more resigned to the fact that they were out there and there was little that could be done, but initial reactions were not positive, to say the least.
Second, Allt om Motor have a brief piece about the exposé today. This is the most interesting paragraph (and thanks to Carl-Henrik for the translation!)

- We had a written confirmed date with the photographers that had our permission to take photos of the new model. An agreement that was clearly broken. What’s going to happen now, we don’t know. But there will be no photos until we release them. On the other hand we’re happy with the excitement the photos has created on the Internet, says Gunilla Gustavs.

What Gunilla is talking about here are the photographers who were invited to Trollhattan to do photoshoots for their own publications. Other magazines like Autocar, AMS and others were all there too last week, and are all subject to the same embargo date (in late August).
Autobild threw caution to the wind and put their images online whilst the others have honored the embargo, which is why you don’t see any photos up at Auto Motor and Sport right now – Saab contacted them, asked them to remove the initial images and honor the date set, which they’ve done.
If you’re still skeptical, then ask yourself this. If I’m Auto Motor and Sport (or any one of the other publications) what do I have to gain by allowing Saab to do a sweetheart deal with Auto Zeitung or Autobild?
Saab are taking this punch on the chin, but it’s one that should never have been thrown.
——
As an aside, Allt om Motor also give some print space to my idea of Saab taking charge of their own releases via a dedicated website for fans and media.
It’s nice to see the idea getting just a little traction.

Thursday night snippets – auto-merry-go-round edition

July 23, 2009 in Saabology

Greetings all – had your fill of 9-5 stuff yet?
Not to worry, as there’s a good comprehensive summary coming later.
——
If you’re looking to see more from the Saab Days celebrations held in Trollhattan last weekend, out mate Etienne has 100+ photos over at his Saabhuy blog.
Check this out – Saab 95 with a 92 nose!

I guess BAIC can kiss their Opel dreams goodbye once and for all.
From the GM Social Media Newsroom:

“We had a good and thoughtful discussion around the key operating metrics and key issues associated with the three final offers we received on Monday evening”, said John Smith, GM’s chief negotiator for the sale of Opel. “We have agreed to continue detailed talks with both Magna and RHJI to secure Opel’s future.”

That’s three final offers and negotiations with two parties.
——
The long-running (family) fued between Porsche and VW seems to be coming to a conclusion, with the head of Porsche, Wendelin Wiedeking, taking his keys and heading home.

Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking and finance chief Holger Haerter will leave the company immediately, the German sports car maker has announced…..
Mr Wiedeking, who lead the charge in Porsche’s ill-fated takeover attempt of Volkswagen AG, has accepted compensation of 50 million euros, the company said in a statement.

There wss a time when many advocated Porsche taking over Saab, including me.
Count your blessings, I guess.
——
Another familiar name on the move is GM Designer, Brian Nesbitt, and this one’s quite intriguing.
Nesbitt is moving from being the VP of GM North American Design to being the head of Cadillac.
Not the head of Cadillac design, but the #1 chief head honcho and grand poobah of the entire Cadillac operation.
He’ll report directly to Bob Lutz and in taking the position, he makes Steve Hill and (former Saab head) Steve Shannon a little redundant. It’s not known where these guys will fit in now.

Anyone in or near Indiana feel like looking into a Saab 9000 Aero, painted in what it’s owner thinks is Lightning Blue?

Needs a fuel pump, but could be worth a look.

My 2 cents on the 2010 Saab 9-5

July 23, 2009 in Editorial

Have you recovered yet?
I’m still waking up. Was that all a dream last night? Did we really see the 2010 Saab 9-5 a month before the embargo date? Wow.
You’ve all had your say on the car in comments, so now I’m going to take a moment to have mine, if that’s OK.
——
Caution – Images only
As always, I’ll add my standard caution to the nay-sayers out there. All we’ve seen are images. The real thing always looks better in the metal.
The other thing to remember is that Saab designs tend to grow on people over time. I was ready to skewer my own eyeballs when I first saw the Dame Edna version of the Saab 9-5 a few years ago and now I think it’s evolved into a very endearing look.
——
Exterior
What I believe we’re looking at here is a Vector spec, TTID version of the new 9-5. Of course, the badge reads TTiD4, which I can only assume means that they’ve managed to incorporate the XWD system with the TTiD engine.
2010Saab9-5ABfront.JPG
Like many of you, my first glimpse of the front of this car left me a little underwhelmed. I wouldn’t go so far as to say disappointed, but it didn’t grab me by the collar and scream “look at me!!” like I thought it might.
That was my first glimpse. And those were my expectations.
The reality for the 2010 Saab 9-5 is that it’s not necessarily meant to be something that demands visual drooling at first glance. It’s meant to be a large, well built, conservatively styled sedan with outstanding driving characteristics and a good dose of Swedish style.
On those accounts, I think it’s delivered and delivered well.
The more I’ve looked at it from different angles and studied the details of this car, the more I’ve come to like it. It’s got presence due to it’s sheer size and it’s got class. It’s not showy, but it’s not apologetic, either. It’s self assured. As a Saab person, I’ve got to say that I really like that.
If the front is therefore at a point where I’m satisfied, it’s the back end that gets my Saab juices flowing.
2010Saab9-5ABrear.JPG
Those rear lights are killers and the stance from this view is just brilliant! Maybe it’s the hill they’re shooting on, but whatever it is, I really like this.
This is where the conservative styling of the front is spiced up with a little bit of attitude and purpose. I can only image how good the Aero version will look and the rear end of the Aero is VERY important as that’s what many a Teutonic driver will see on the Autobahns :-)
——
Interior
Now this is the part that’s really got me excited.
This is only my personal opinion, but for me, it’s the perfect evolution of the Saab interior concept into the age we live in. Saab interiors have, by and large, always been well designed. It’s one of my favourite things about Saabs. This design brings the Saab ethos into the 21st century and from what I can see, it finally gets the materials Saab have deserved as standard from the factory.
2010Saab9-5ABinteriorfull.JPG
2010Saab9-5ABinteriorsgauges.JPG
2010Saab9-5ABinteriorstack.JPG
Yes, some things have changed and some of those changes are moves away from what we’re used to. The dials in three separate clusters, the fonts being a little different, the turbo gauge especially.
It’s called evolution.
The big thing to me is that whilst it’s all looking a bit different, it’s still all very coherent and I can easily accept it as a modern Saab interior.
I’m a big fan of the button dash, as you know, so this is like a hallelujah moment for me, to see that beautiful center stack. It’s the 9-4x concept interior made real and in production trim. I can only hope it feels as good as it looks.
——
Some dot points……

  • People’s thoughts on the headrests are noted, and shared.
  • The wheels are stunning!
  • I can’t believe I’m going to write this, but I’m actually a little disappointed that it has the Griffin on the front. New time, new car: the wordmark looks fantastic and I, for one, wouldn’t have minded if they’d used the wordmark only.
  • The rear lights are incredibly sexy.
  • The J-vent hasn’t won me over yet.
  • And yes, I too am wondering what that is in the middle of the speedo.

——
Over all…..
I was a little surprised by the conservatism in this design at first, but I can’t wait to see one on the road. I think it’s going to look absolutely magnificent in motion. Perhaps it doesn’t have as distinctive a silhouette as I’d like to see, but I’ll wait for a more desireable Aero model and more importantly, I’ll wait until I see it for myself.
The interior is absolutely stunning. Remember, it’s this interior that’ll form the basis for the interior in the next Saab 9-3 facelift in a year or so from now. These interior photos, more than anything else, have filled me to overflowing with hope and belief.
The final thing to remember with this car is……. it’s a car. More than anything, it’s about the driving.
Few have had the chance to do any driving yet, but those who have say that it’s absolutely fantastic. Go back through the Road Test archives to see test drives of the 9-5 mules by the Swedish media. They were all quite complimentary.
I’m totally rapt to have seen this car and am even more eager now to see and drive the real thing. I think it’s going to be – in Saab terms – a big success.

Photoshoppers get busy on the 2010 Saab 9-5

July 23, 2009 in Saabology

I always enjoy this part of the new vehicle process.
At first we see what are some very standard looking photos…… and then the creative ones amongst us get busy to show us what we might be missing.
It’s photoshop time for the 2010 Saab 9-5!!!
——
Dippen posted this link in comments to a photochop of an Aero version of the car, apparently drawn up by a member of the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden.
Chunky!!

And Serj has jumped on to his computer and generated a few images that he’s tried to base on the 2010 Saab 9-5 color palette that GM themselves leaked back in May.
Black baby, black.

Either Fjord Blue Metallic or Storm Blue Metallic. It’s hard for me to tell.

Pine green. Yes, the color code is GAY. Get it out of your system now.

Cranberry Red Metallic?

Autozeitung claim new, real images of 2010 Saab 9-5

July 23, 2009 in Saabology

UPDATE II
The images are back.
Autobild have taken the release to a whole new level, so there’s little point in keeping them offsite now.

German publication Autozeitung has published these images, which they claim to be real, genuine images from Saab, of the 2010 Saab 9-5.
They appear in the latest edition of their print magazine. They don’t seem to be appearing online, despite showing on the online cover. I believe the embargo date for images was late August with the first live showing to be at Frankfurt in September. This would suggest that Autozeitung are not supposed to be publishing these yet, so there’s going to be some trouble over these.
I’ve received some scanned copies of the images. The scans aren’t very good quality but they’re good enough to look at for the moment. I’ve emailed Saab copies of these and tried to call Eric Geers personally, but couldn’t get through.
Hving addressed all the worry about the politics of these coming out – let me say this: HUBBA HUBBA HUBBA!!!!
2010Saab9-5story
2010Saab9-5seats
2010Saab9-5interior
——
D has provided a summary translation of the article:
Length is 5008 millimeters, wheelbase is 2837 mm (nothing new I think), luggage space 513 litres;
A new storage system for the luggage (something similar to the original system of the first 9-5 Sportkombis, or the current Opel Flex-storage system) and foldable rear seats;
3 equipment levels, Linear, Vector and Aero, the last two showing visible exhausts;
Positioning of the car as chauffeurs-limousine on the Chinese market, projectmanager Michael Harrison said;
Technical news are a head-up-display, adaptive light systems, actives suspension with active/intelligent/sport-setup – as standard or option, automatic road-sign detection (known here from the little brother Insignia as Opel-eye, which is delayed here afaik), and something (I would translate as) like lane-departure-warning;
Engines: 1.6t (190), 2.0t (220), 2.8t V6(300), 2.0TiD/TTiD(160/190), the two strongest petrol engines with AWD-option, the 2.0t with option for E 85;
No pricing yet announced, but below a comparable A6; SportCombi one!!! (oh my god) year later; sales beginning for the limousine/sedan in April 2010!
The author’s personal comments are as follows:
The intention of the new big Saab to belong to the ,,Oberklasse (something like Premium etc.) becomes clear in the interior of the car. Materials are nice to touch, the finish is clean (which has to mean something like accurate), the design is said to be modern and pleasant (in terms of not aggressive, as I understand it the german word he uses is ,,zurückhaltend ). The interior space is described as spacious big rear leg room, even though the roofline is falling and reduces headroom in the rear a little bit. The ignition key between the seats is replaced by a start-stop-button.
Exterior design is clear or clean, a clear formal separation (or difference) to the Insignia, the front is something like powerfull , the roofline falls straight/constantly, the long rear creates a lightness in the proportions of the car, because bumpers and the rear lights are positioned very high. The rear view mirrors have integrated indicators.
And D has provided his own thoughts to start discussion…….
My thoughts:
On the pics the dashboard looks very much like the Hirsch carbon trim of the current model, but completely different; the seats appear to be very similar to the really brilliant (that s my opinion from a short sit-in) optional AGR-seats of the Insignia with heating and ventilation. They can be nothing but comfortable. The head-rest differs a little bit and looks saabish. The front seats can be equipped with rear-seat-DVD-entertainment (they look like very well integrated). The instruments are a bit like in Alfas (I mean it s this design of icecream pots; I think you know what I mean). The pointers are gree! The parking brake is no longer mechanical one. (I am really absolutely excited and can hardly concentrate; reading, translating, writing).
By the way, the steering wheel, which received a lot of critics in your blog as I remember, reminds me very much of the Scania R-Series. Which looks great in my eyes and which also has the keys for the cruse control on the steering wheel, which is great I think, so I would say it has Scandinavian design roots (a little bit off topic maybe).

The 2010 Saab 9-5 photo fiasco shows exactly why Saab need their own enthusiast/news site.

July 22, 2009 in Editorial

It’s 200andfreaking9, for crying out loud. Surely this sort of thing isn’t supposed to happen anymore.
Earlier this evening (my time) the latest edition of Autozeitung hit news stands in Germany. The magazine broke an embargo on Saab 9-5 photos and published them a month before the embargo date. People in Germany (and elsewhere, I guess) can buy the magazine right now and look at real photos of the 2010 Saab 9-5……but I can’t show them here at the moment.
Within hours, I received scans of those images, which I emailed and phoned Saab about and then published here at SaabsUnited. An hour or so later, I received an email from Saab requesting their removal, which I complied with.
A year or so ago, I probably wouldn’t have received such an email and a year or so ago I most likely wouldn’t have complied if it came. But this is an important time in Saab’s history, so they made the request and I honored it.
But none of this should have ever happened.
It happened because the car companies still haven’t learned their lesson – that the internet is the #1 game in town now.
Car magazines still have their place and they’re obviously still commanding the attention of the car companies and their PR departments, but one look at the newspaper industry should tell them that the game has changed. That it hasn’t quite reached critical mass in the carmag industry yet is just a case of that segment lagging behind.
This cluster%#$@ with the Saab 9-5 is just the latest in a long line of episodes where the car company trusts the publisher and the publisher breaks that trust. It usually happens with the internet breaking first. This time it’s a magazine.
What that tells me is that Saab let their images out waaaaaaaay too early and the temptation to go to print and get the scoop was too much for Autozeitung.
What it also tells me is something that I’ve been saying for around three years now – Saab need to control their own destiny with this sort of stuff.
They need to have an online portal that’s a connecting point for the enthusiasts and the press alike. They need to release these photos on that site according to their own timetable and the print industry, declining as it is, can pick them up later. The online magazines can run it straight away and of course, the enthusiasts get it right from the source.
That we’re living in 2009 and no-one’s really done this yet is somewhat amazing to me. I can barely think of a big vehicle launch in the last 4 years that hasn’t been glimpsed first on the web. Why doesn’t one of these companies do it right?
Why can’t Saab be the first to do it right? Do it their way?
And avoid this absolute mess.
I know it’s frustrating for me. It’s probably frustrating for Auto Motor and Sport, who in their quick manner linked to the story here in very quick fashion. It’s frustrating for the people who visit here and for the people who visit there.
Of course, most important of all, it’s got to be terribly frustrating for Saab.
They should connect directly with their customers and take these timing issues into their own hands.

The new photos of the 2010 Saab 9-5 have been removed

July 22, 2009 in Troll Stuff

UPDATE – the images are now back.
——
OK, we dance the dance again.
If you’ve come too late, you’ve missed the publication here of scanned images from German magazine, Autozeitung.
Here’s how it happened.
Autozeitung have printed images of the 2010 Saab 9-5 in their latest print edition. The images are not on their website and Saab have asked that they not publish them online until the late-August embargo date.
This is the digital age, however, and within hours of the sun coming up in Germany, I had scans of the article in my inbox.
Feeling stung by what happened when I published the CGI images of the 9-5 last month, I emailed and phoned Saab PR people to inform them of the publication, and of my own intention to publish, which I did.
Saab got in touch with Autozeitung, requested no online publication and requested that I remove the photos as well, which I’ve done.
I have explained my position to them, however, being that with the images now available in print, it will be only a matter of hours until scanned images appear elsewhere on the web.
If and when they do appear widely, I don’t think it’s fair to withhold them from here. I sympathise with Saab’s position, but if they’re out there, then they’re out there.
