Saab sale due by end of July

July 22, 2009 in News

I’ve written about this previously, but it’s nice to see it popping up again in the mainstream motoring media.
Turbin dropped this link in via email at lunchtime today but such is the busy-ness of things at the moment that I didn’t get to write about it until now. Many of you may have already come across the story.
Hilton Holloway from Autocar is reporting from his “unnamed sources in Sweden” that the Koenigsegg deal to purchase Saab from General Motors should be stitched up by the end of this month:

A binding agreement that will sell Saab to the Koenigsegg Group will be in place by the end of this month, according to sources in Sweden.
The move comes in the wake of General Motors’ rapid exit from bankruptcy. With that hurdle cleared, GM — the current owner of Saab — is now able to finalise the deal with Koenigsegg Group, a conglomerate of investors working with the owners of the Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg.

Note how Koenigsegg are no longer referred to in single terms, but always as a conglomerate of investors and always in strong terms. Remember those concerns we’ve all had about the financial backing of the group? Public Relations 101: You fit the language to address the questions. Holloways sources for this story are therefore quite close.
I suspect that for a few, the questions will remain, however.
——
The other part of the story is the movement of production bits and pieces for the new Saab 9-5. Saab are keen to get this transaction out of the way so that work can begin on fitting out the Trollhattan factory for 9-5 production.
Saab are planning for baseline worldwide sales of 45,000 units of the 9-5. This is the basis of their business case, but apparently the internal belief according to Autocar is that sales will be considerably stronger than that.
——
The Frankfurt Motor Show press days are the 15th and 16th of September. This is the first time the world can expect to see the new Saab 9-5 in the metal.

Jörgen’s Midnight Sun rally results

July 21, 2009 in Saabology

It’s not that often that you have someone you know – well, kind of – involved in something like the Midnight Sun rally. Not for me, at least.
Jörgen T’s been a reader and bakcground contributor of links and leads to both TS and SU for a few years now, so I’m really pleased to be able to share with you the conclusion of his run at the Midnight Sun rally.
Click here to see Jörgen’s previous photos from the event.
——
After finishing the rally in Karlskoga we had to have some service, we had stopped at a gas station and had the wheel removed. There, we found out that something was loose. We had only one small exhibiton stage left so we drove that one.
DSC09054.jpg
As seen in the pictures we had some great help from Historic Rally Racing Service Company and Johan Josefsson (who has that nice service-99 Combi Coupe in the bottom photo) – by the way he was running the show for Anna and Nicolina with the Two stroker in Carrera Panamerica a few years ago! Thanks Johan!
It was more rainy then what the pictures say…. Rally to the Midnight sunn???
DSC09055.jpg
We ended up in 6th place in our Regularity with trip meter category. We are more than pleased concidering the extremely stiff competition!

Tuesday Nights Snippets – things you’ve got to see

July 21, 2009 in Saabology

I apologise for the lack of content today, but I’ve had several obstacles to posting pop up today.
The first was real life, as my real job is catching up with me at the moment and demanding a lot of time. The second is our migration to a new ISP at home, which has gone well thankyou very much.
Hopefully we can all get back to normal soon.
——
Welcome back, Eggs!!
——
I’ll take this opportunity to once again remind people of the comments policy at the site. Disagreeing with a post or a comment is fine, but trying to bring the writer down a peg or two just discourages people from contributing.
Respect is the key.
——
The Dude speak thus:
Today, XXXXX could respond with flexibly to high and lows in sales. “This flexibility can’t exist in a Giga-Corporation like YYYYY,” says Dudenhöffer. Moreover, the entire production at YYYYY is based on modular systems that are standardized and leave no space for individuality. And in this chain should now be incorporated XXXXX says the expert. “In the long run”, says Dudenhöffer “the success of XXXXX will be lost, and their income will fall.”
So who are X and Y?
Saab and GM?
No. But some would see the situation as kinda similar.
It’s Porsche and Volkswagen.
Thanks to Joan!
——
Now, something the car enthusiasts amongst you must see: a gallery of many of the cars – not just Saabs – that participated in the Midnight Sun rally last weekend.
It’s huge! Click the images below to enlarge and then view the entire gallery.

That last photo is of our mate Jorgen and his Saab 96.
I must email him straight after this to see how he finished up.
My thanks the Bengt for the gallery above, and the one below as well!
——
It seems the rain might have put a dampener on proceedings all last weekend in Trollhattan.
The Saab Days festival carried on, however, and it looks like a great collection of a cars and a good time being had by all.
Thanks to Bengt once again. I wish I could have been there as well to collect some stories. Actually, I just wish I was in Trollhattan, period.
SD900Viggen.jpg
If anyone knows some details about the car below, please fill us in via comments. It was at Saab Days so one would assume there’s a relationship there, but I’m struggling to see it at this point.
Curious.

I’ve had a full weekend a few days with my Monte Carlo since I did the upgrades last week.
I’ve got to say it: this car is now incredibly pleasurable to drive. The power boost, the increased responsiveness, the increased stability with the improved suspension – it’s just absolutely brilliant.
I wish I’d done these upgrades before buying the MX-5. I don’t regret that purchase at all, but I’m sure I would’ve thought about it a bit longer. The Monte is that good now.
I had around a 40km commute to work this morning through along some beautiful country roads and it was a blast to drive.
To anyone contemplating a similar upgrade: it gets a big double thumbs-up from me.

EnG – still alive and kicking

July 21, 2009 in Archive

Ladies and Gents: I’ve missed all of you at SaabsUnited (SaabU?) and I’ve particularly missed my C900 ‘vert which is still not running and stuck in my garage. I’ll have a resolution soon, and you’ll be the first to know, natch.
As Swade is aware, my work load and life load have been tremendous. I’m amazed at how unrelenting it’s really been — genuinely. It gives me a HUGE newly found appreciation for Steven Wade, Saab host extraordinare. How he does it is beyond belief, really.
My reason for this quick post: I’ve got a very unusual vehicle for my travels this week, and, taking a page from Andy’s book, I thought that I’d give you all a chance to guess what I’m driving.
Clues:
1. It is a gas-electric hybrid.
2. It was manufactured by a division that was a part of General Motors at the time of manufacture.
3. It has some of the best seats that I’ve ever encountered on any car. I still like the seats in the 9-5 a bit better, but these are darn good.
That’s it. Those are all of the clues that I’ll give. I’ll check back, probably on Friday or Saturday, to reveal the answer. Until then — Happy Saabing!

2010 Saab 9-5 pops up in Bamberg, Germany

July 21, 2009 in Archive

Here’s a couple of new images of the 2010 Saab 9-5, spotted recently by a member of the Slovernian Saab Club whilst he was in Bamburg, Germany. They’ve been posted on a Slovenian Saab Portal.
There’s nothing new in these, but it’s interesting that these were taken amongst what appears to be metropolitan traffic. Most of the spyshots we’ve seen so far have been out amongst much less traffic.
Thanks to Peter G for sending them in.

Saab claiming financial health ahead of possible Koenigsegg announcement

July 20, 2009 in Archive

It’s nice to hear something from Trollhattan for a change. I know most of Sweden shuts down for about three weeks in July but the silence from there in the last few weeks, amidst the situation the company is in, has been of some concern for a Saab blogger, though no news is good news, I guess.
Saab’s Gunilla Gustavs has spoken briefly with reporters in Sweden and her comments have been reported both at DI.se and at TTELA.
She states that the reconstruction phase that Saab has gone through and the associated write-down in debts owed to creditors has left Saab in a very good financial position.
The Googletrans with a few edits from yours truly.

The balance sheet is restored in Saab Automobile AB. [This] emerged at a general meeting held last Friday.
“Actually, we are a healthy company now,” says Gunilla Gustavs [from] Saab Information to TT.
Saab, owned by General Motors, is still in a reconstruction phase where the deadline expires on August 20. During reconstruction, the company’s liabilities to creditors written down by 75 percent in a so-called accord.
The aim of reconstruction is that Saab, which is characterized by massive losses, will [stand on its own two feet] again as an independent company.
“The process to sell the company continues, but we have no problem with the capital anymore,” says Gunilla Gustavs to TT.

It’s my understanding that the reconstruction phase end-date of August 20 is one that Saab can apply to extend, if required. Saab began reconstruction in February and each stage is three months in length. Saab are currently in their second three month block, which ends August 20.
Obviously, Saab would like to have an announcement made by then about the sale to Koenigsegg and the timetables mentioned to me in the past have all pointed towards mid-July for a deal and the end of July for an announcement.
We’ll have to wait and see if that timetable holds. Since showing those CGI photos several weeks ago, my sources at Saab have all gone completely and totally cold so I have absolutely no news to offer, other than what I heard earlier in proceedings.

SOC09 features Saab auction – items online now!

July 20, 2009 in Archive

The Saab Owners Convention 2009, being held at Copper Mountain in Colorado, will feature an auction of Saab cars, accessories and memorabilia.
A large number of the items are at online auction site, Proxibid, already and you can view them now and even place bids. The final auction will take place live during the SOC, on August 14th.
Looking over this list has left me carrying a just a little bit of regret that I purchased my MX-5, as there’s a couple of very desireable vintage Saabs there that I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on.
The cars for sale include a Sonett II, a Sonett III, a nice looking red SPG and an 850 Monte Carlo.
SonettIIauction.JPG
There are some videos of the cars for sale – two minutes each in length, that you can view via Youtube. Start here for the V4 Sonett II and you should be able to link up to the rest OK (can you tell I really like that V4????)
——
There’s some other bits and pieces for sale, too, including a Halda Speedpilot IV, some Talladega wheels and bits for older Saabs like V4 heads and a 95/96 dash pad.
Speedpilot.jpg
——
If you’re interesting in buying me a V4 Sonnett II bidding for any of these items prior to the live auction in 4 weeks time, then Proxibid is the place you want to be.

Binding offers for Opel due today

July 20, 2009 in Archive

It’s been a long time coming, for all this GM Europe divestiture business. For both Saab and Opel. Who knows if we’ll hear a final announcement with regards to Saab this week, but if the timetable in the news services is correct, we should definitely hear an outcome with regards to Opel.

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International Inc. ( MGA) and Ripplewood, which is behind Belgian investment group RHJ International SA (RHJI.BT), will submit bids for General Motors Corp.’s (GMGMQ) Opel and Vauxhall car brands Monday, the U.K. Business Secretary said.
“We will know today, I believe, that two bidders, Magna International and a Belgium-based company Ripplewood are putting forward bids to share the ownership of General Motors in Europe with the parent company in North America,” Peter Mandelson said on BBC radio.
He said GM would be considering those bids over the following 48 hours and was likely to indicate its preference Wednesday.

I’m not sure why this article from CNN Money doesn’t mention Beijing Automotive, but they’re said to still be in the running, too.
The smart money is on Magna, who enjoy a favourable opinion from both the unions and the German government, both of whom are key to getting this deal done. RHJ are seen as a bidder more likely to try and sell back to GM in a few years, a position which is not viewed positively by the German government:

Germany’s economics minister has ruled out any attempt by General Motors to include an option to buy back majority control of GM Europe, which produces Opel and Vauxhall vehicles, as part of a deal to give up more than 50 per cent of its German subsidiary in exchange for state aid.
“This is incompatible with our views and cannot happen,” Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told German Sunday newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung in an interview.
Reuters Newsagency says the comments could suggest that Belgian financial investor RHJ International may have problems with its bid if the company is viewed as only a short-term player.

More of that custom Saab 92

July 20, 2009 in Archive

Martin F photographed this customised Saab 92 at the Saab Days gathering over the weekend.
Custom Saab 93
The car aroused a reasonable amount of interest in comments, and Martin has been kind enough to chip in a link to some more photos on Garaget (thanks!!)
Saab92heated1.jpg
According to the Garaget page, the car has the original two cylinder, to-stroke engine and the original gearbox.
Of course, as you can see here it’s got a completely restored and customised exterior and interior. Those are 18-inch wheels you see there, though the car retains it’s original drum brakes.
Saab92heated2.jpg
The car was purchased less than a year ago, so if they’ve done all this restoration work in that time then it’s a job well done already.
It sounds like the owner might not be finished yet, too, with audio still to go in and the “Future Plans” section if the Garaget page simply saying Be ready.

I drove a Maserati GT and here’s why I’d still buy a Saab….

July 20, 2009 in Saabology

The headline above might seem extraordinary to some. I used to run this as a regular series of comparos, with stories written by readers who had drive Brand X and given some thought as to how their Saab stacked up.
Aussie Saabnut, Brendan B, had some seat time in a Maserati Gran Tourismo over the weekend and he’s been kind enough to email some thoughts to our Australian email circle, as well as some photos.
I’ll tie things up with some thoughts at the end.
——
I just spent the weekend testing out a Maserati Gran Turismo (sorry for camera phone pics, I forgot to charge my camera’s batteries). The interior quality and attention to detail was pretty bad for a $300,000 car. A few things that really stood out were the door air bag covers, the centre clock and the sun visors (which seemed to be made out of cardboard).
19-07-09_1439.jpg
When it came time to operate the Sat Nav it was impossible to use, unless you wanted to go to Palm Beach. I’m still yet to drive a Turbo-X, but from what I’ve seen the fit and finish and sat nav is miles better in the Turbo-X.
The seats were absolutely crap, very hard and too much lumbar, with no lumbar support device to dial it back. The weirdest thing about the car was that when the passenger adjusts their seat heater it shows up on the drivers instrument display. When I was riding in the back, behind my 6ft tall friend, I had plenty of leg room and my head wasn’t touching the roof, however the seat back was too low and made the seat uncomfortable.
19-07-09_1425.jpg
Good points were the exhaust note, which is simply amazing. Maybe I did a bit too much driving around in first gear. It sounds awesome from outside the car. Also the “look at me” factor was way better than we expected. We’ve found Darling St in Balmain to be the best street cred test. Driving up and down in a Black Porsche GT3 and people quickly whip out the wanker sign, or the little pinky gesture, and in a Grey Audi R8 you go past unnoticed. However in the Gran Turismo people were stopping to watch us drive past, and/or pointing us out to friends, even getting the thumbs up from a few people.
Overall I was disappointed with the car because when I was growing up I had a love of Maseratis. The Gran Turismo definatly has the looks to match the price. However if the front seats and sat nav was fixed I’d start reconsidering parting with $300k. Tidy up the fit and finish and you’ve got a winner, although maybe I shouldn’t have looked at German cars first.
19-07-09_1429.jpg
The next (fun) car in the lineup is looking like it’ll be a Lambo. I’m keen to have a drive of a XWD car, so I’ve found out there is a 2009 Saab 9-3 Aero XWD press car. However it’s an automatic :-(
——
My thoughts……
Brendan is doing these test drives as part of a new website he’s starting up with some friends. Many of you will know him as the guy behind the Australian Saab 99 register and he’s also recently bought a crashed Viggen convertible in order to straighten it out and get it back on the road.
I think I can speak for him and say that in no way was he looking to place the Turbo X in the same class of vehicle as the Maserati. The Maser is an exotic and has the price and powerplant to match.
The point here that I’d like to relate is the Swedish concept of Lagom that some have mentioned here in the last year or so. The concept of something being “just enough” or “just the right amount”.
A$300,000 will buy you a Maserati with killer looks, a fat engine and a heart-racing exhaust note, yet it won’t buy you perfection. When you consider that this car costs 10 times as much as many other forms of adequate transportation, it really should be close to perfection (as should any car in that price range).
A base Saab, here in Australia at least, costs around 20% more than your average piece of adequate transportation (think Toyota Camry) but it comes with Lagom – just the right amount of equipment, safety, utility and driver satisfaction: the things that make it an experience rather than just adequate transportation.
The excess is minimal and most will consider the quality in 2009 to be pretty darn good. Go higher in the range and it will cost you more, but you’ll get much better performance and still at a cheaper price than many of the more exotic competitors.
The rich can have their Maseratis. I’ll just enjoy looking at them and keep on enjoying my Saabs, which have just the right amount of performance, comfort, safety and utility for my needs.

Saab Ads – Get yours NOW at Elkparts!

July 20, 2009 in Archive

RE-POSTED
I thought I’d better post this again. When I first offered these posters via email there were 300 requests for them and I figure some may have missed this post last week and wondered why they didn’t receive the email.
Here you go….
——
You can tell I’m not a businessman…..
If I’d thought this through properly I would have proposed this to John from Elkparts right from the get-go. As it happened, I didn’t think about it until I saw his name in the comments thread asking for a copy of the Saab Advert PDF that I posted about yesterday.
In a win-win-win situation for everybody, John has graciously agreed to host the Saab Advert PDFs so that you can now download them at your liesure and not have to worry about me stuffing up a complex bulk email.
Win-Win-Win?

  • You don’t have to wait until the weekend to get your copy.
  • I don’t have to worry about the time consuming task of preparing the bulk email – or the prospect of it getting messed up.
  • Whilst you’re there, you might want to peruse some scale models of the cars in the advert, or some of the other offers Elkparts has especially for SU readers.

Click here to get your Saab Advert PDF now, from Elkparts.
Saab Advert
——
John had offered some time ago to host podcasts for me if I’d chosen to go down that road, an offer that was declined with thanks because I couldn’t see myself having the time for a good quality podcast that would add much more in terms of value for you readers.
The response to the Saab Advert PDF article has been rather overwhelming. As I write this, there’s 300 requests for it. I’m sure there’s some automated software that could do the job of collating those addresses for me, but I don’t know what it is and right now the prospect of cutting and pasting 300 email addresses into a bulk email seems rather daunting………SO…
When I saw John’s request for a copy, I emailed him and asked if he wouldn’t mind hosting them on his servers so that people could download them at their leisure.
As mentioned above, the result is a win for everyone concerned.
My thanks to John for this generous time-saver of a gesture and to everyone, thanks for your interest in the adverts. I hope you enjoy them and pass them on to some other Saab friends of yours.
It’s a little bit of pay-it-forward, Saab style.
Click here to get your Saab Advert PDF now, from Elkparts.
My thanks once again to Steve C for passing them on to me, and also to Lowe Brindfors for passing them on to him in the first place.
——
Also, if you are concerned because you’ve provided an email address in comments to the previous entry on this subject, please have no fear.
As is normal SU policy, your email address has not been passed on to a third party and never will be. The only reason it was needed was for the reason stated in the original entry, so that I could email the PDF’s out to people.

Sunday Night Snippets – Rusty Ashes edition

July 19, 2009 in Archive

Australia’s New Zealand’s own Russell Crowe has bought a Saab!
Well, almost. He’s helped one of the crew in the movie he’s filming buy a Saab, which is near enough, I suppose.

The Oscar winner handed sound recordist Denise Yarde £5000 ($10,200) to buy a new car after her old one burst into flames while she was driving from her London home to the movie set in Virginia Water, Surrey.
When she arrived on set she told co-workers, including the multi-millionaire star of the film, about her ordeal and said she would now have to find the money to buy a new car.
The Sunday Mirror newspaper reported that when Crowe made a joke about the car, Yarde shot back: “Well I suppose it’s OK for you Russell. You’ve probably never had to worry about finding five grand for a new car.”
A short time later, Crowe handed over a wad of cash, saying: “There you go. You can buy a £10,000 car now.”
A film insider told the newspaper that Yarde was overjoyed by the gesture and used the money to buy a top-of-the-range 2007 Saab.

The movie he’s filming is a new version of Robin Hood, so I suppose the natural question is who did he steal the money from before he handed it over?
Thanks to Damien C for the link!

Don’t forget Etienne’s Saab Days photos…..

The Ashes
I’ve got to say to our English friends, that here in Australia we are Not Happy with the umpiring at Lords.
It doesn’t excuse the 1st innings collapse we had, but to lose Ponting to a ball he didn’t hit in tht 1st innings, and then lose BOTH opening batsmen to poor decisions in the 2nd innings (Freddy bowled a no ball to get Katich and the umpires refused to refer the bounced catch that dismissed Hughes) is very disheartening.
It looks like we’re going to lose this test now. And with Bing Lee most likely still unavailable for the third test, question marks around Stuart Clark, Mitch Johnson feeling emotional and Mike Hussey looking like he’d struggle to hit a piñata, I think Australia’s going to struggle in this series.
I hope Ponting gives the umpires a very big serve at the end of play today.

More from Saab Days and the Midnight Sun Rally

July 19, 2009 in Archive

It’s all happening this weekend in Sweden.
We’ve got the Midnight Sun rally going on as well as the Saab Days festival and some SU regulars are involved with both.
Midnight Sun Rally
First to the rally, where our mate Jörgen T is driving his Saab 96 and doing pretty well. He was in 4th place after 2 legs of the rally. One leg to go.
This is the field at the 2nd nightly stopover at Årjäng. As you can see, the weather is not being kind – not much midnight sun going on here…..
JTmidsonN2.jpg
This is Jörgen with Elizabeth Nyström, who was an occasional co-driver with Pat Moss (who apparently, did not like green cars – consider yourself a little more educated now)
JTElizabethNystrom.jpg
Jörgen also called into the Saab museum on day 1, and photographed what is apparently a new car to the museum, a replica of Per Eklund’s Saab 96 from 1973, a car in which he nearly killed himself in an accident in Jyväskylö, Finland.
JTEklundReplica.jpg
Here’s hoping Jörgen has another great day on the final day of the rally. My thanks to him for keeping us updated and sending in some great photos.
——
Saab Days
The Saab Days celebrations are also on in Trollhattan and I’ve received some great photos from Martin F.
You can see more of these here. Thanks Martin!!
A nice Saab 99 in orange…..
IMG_3934.jpg
And a cutaway Saab, very nicely photographed in the Saab museum….
IMG_3953.jpg
The number of custom Saabs at these events, and the quality and degree of the work, is always jaw-dropping. We just don’t see Saabs like this outside Sweden.
IMG_3974.jpg
Or this rather extreme Saab 93 from the 1950s…..
IMG_3979.jpg
Another shot from the museum.
IMG_4018.jpg
Another regular who’s at Saab Days is Dippen, and he’s shot some videos, which I’ve embedded after the jump.
Some people have trouble viewing video on this site. If that’s you, or if you’re using Internet Explorer, then click here to see Dippen’s videos.
If video’s OK for you, then click through to watch just a few of them.

Images from Saab Days and the Midnight Sun rally

July 18, 2009 in Archive

Etienne from Belgium, who runs the Saabhuy blog, is currently in Trollhattan for Saab Days and has started depositing photos on to his Flickr account.
Of course, the Midnight Sun rally competitors took a stop in Trollhattan as well last night, so it’s no surprise that his latest photos have a distinct motorsport feel.

There’s more photos at his Flickr account if you’d like to check them out.
And on motorsport, one of our own is actually running his car quite successfully in this Midnight Sun rally. Jörgen T is driving his Saab 96 in the event and actually came second in the regularity section of the rally yesterday!
Here he is with the car….

Saab tuning guide

July 18, 2009 in Archive

After posting about my Monte Carlo mods yesterday, there were a number of questions both in comments and in my inbox about what’s available (and from whom) in terms of tuning your Saab.
I thought I’d put together a quick guide as to which companies are out there and what they do. This is by no means a definitive guide and I’m sure that others can and will add to it in comments.
My first tip is read these words of wisdom about Saab tuning before you start.
My second tip for new players is to check out Elkparts to get an idea of what’s available in terms of upgrades for your car. I’m writing this not because they’re a long term site sponsor, but more because it’s the first method I ever used to see what was available when I first started getting interested in tuning my Viggen back in 2005/06. You simply click your Saab model in the left sidebar (for my Monte, that’s 9-3 from 98-02), click Performance Tuning on the next screen, choose your particular variant of that model (e.g. 2.0 HOT Sport) and it’s all laid out for you nice and clear. I have never found a simpler site to use. Seriously.
OK, so talking globally, who’s available and what can you expect?
——
The Tuners
These are the companies that design and develop their own tuning solutions for Saabs. The list is probably incomplete, but these seem to be the main players.
