Saab Sweden comments on those 2010 Saab 9-5 photos

It was a week ago today that I posted, then removed, then re-posted leaked CGI images of the 2010 Saab 9-5.

There's been little comment from Saab Sweden about this. One quick message on Twitter was all that we got.

Today, Saab Sweden have finally provided some comment via their newsroom and I'm pleased to sat that their comment reflects exactly what I've observed in the week since.

We have to admit the pictures are impressive. Further we are delighted to see how eager people are to catch an early glimpse of the car. This said, Saab can assure you that the real all new 9-5 is even more stylish and dynamic than these images indicate and we are confident that, once officially revealed, Saab fans will not be disappointed.

There's more at the Newsroom, but that really sums it up.

I'm sure they'd have preferred it if I hadn't shown those images, but it's played out pretty much as I thought and hoped.

We've had a glimpse of the 2010 Saab 9-5 without getting the full picture due to the fact that they were CGIs. The vast majority have liked what they saw and critically, the opinion has been really good amongst the fans and overwhelmingly positive amongst the press. Like it or not, the press are going to play a big role in selling this car.

No harm, no foul?

Not quite. But I hope Saab see that I weighed up the decision and made the choice to go with those images based on a belief that they wouldn't compromise Saab's cause.

The appetite for this vehicle has not waned in the slightest, and we've only seen a glimpse.

I'm sure the good people of SAAB realize that this website is one of THE best promoters of their brand.
I know of some people who stuck with Saab and NOT decided to buy an Audi, BMW, Volvo or whatever at least in part because of this site and the enthusiasm it fires up with people around the world for Saab when they realize even more how special their brand really is.
Keep up the Good Work...

Well, I'm definitely going to Frankfurt anyway... :) I just have to see it in metal.

Btw Swade, at least they still link to your site from the neewsroom... =)

Swade, you did good. Something exciting for about cars! Now Saab should begin to share "pieces" of real images with you to tease us more.

After a few years driving german brands, i will go back to SAAB in the near future. There is something special about SAAB cars. I believe Eagle63 is right in saying that this site has much to do with the strong enthusiasm in people regarding SAAB cars.

More and more I am convinced that Saab did this deliberately. This is a set up, where Saabsunited is being used as a frame to show fuzzy images in order to generate interest.

Albert, I've written to you privately, but I'll say it here too - you couldn't be more wrong.

I had a pretty regular dialogue with Saab up until last Friday. I haven't heard from them by email or by phone since. I had a fairly good chance at going over there to drive the 9-5 when it's unveiled. That chance is now most likely out the window.

These were leaked. Not fed.

Are you sure that they are from SAAB? To me it seems like someone photoshoped the images from the saab-web article (http://newsroom.saab-web.com/news/news/saabsfutureshowroom.5.43abc3041211cc8612f80001799.html).

If these images came from SAAB I would have expected more when it comes to apperance and details. Why would anyone leak images that aren't that accurate!? They are however most likely very close to the final product.

Patrik,

Am quite sure they're genuine. I'm not sure at what part of the product development cycle they were done (i.e early or late) but I know they're genuine. Can't say any more than that.

I like the language they commented the fact of leaked pictures. I'd say it's elegant (I dont know it is the right word)
Swade I am 100% sure you have the pictures of real 9-5 from one of your Djup's and every morning are tempted to upload them. Am I right?
Getting jealous (-:

One more thing: Have a look at the picture at Saab's Newsroom.
1. It is clear that the nose of the car is much lower than on CGI's ( I love that - it is Saabish - not GMish)
2. the line betwen the rear dors and the "end" of the car is visible (spied 9-5's had lots of plastic to hide this part). This also looks great.
It has a chance to be the great succesor of 9000/old 9-5 line

Now I really cant wait to see the proper pictures!!! I remember when the 9-3SS came out and my response when I first saw the pics. Eagle63 and Mr. J make a good point ane one that we could possibly discuss amongst ourselves in depth. What is it that makes us feel the way we do about our Saabs and, in one word, describe that 'feeling'?

Happy 4th of July to my American Saabisti neighbours. Or should that be neighbors? ;)

I really like those CGI s. In fact, I like them so much that I'm not going to purchase a new vehicle and hold on to my 1999 9-3 for as long as possible until they come out. I hope they come out soon and get a good review from Edmund's. My concern is where will these new Saabs be sold and serviced in the U.S. As of recently G.M. dealerships covered this. However, I understand G.M. is making them stop in order to focus on sales and service of the remaining. G.M. brands. Does anyone have any insight as to this problem?

Swade: I cannot believe Saab will hold a grudge against you, though you might want to avoid having any more fun with the mythical Russian connections to K-egg. I suspect Sweden is rallying behind IKEA's June 23 decision to stop investment due to “unpredictable character of administrative procedures” in Russia. Bo Andersson is one brave Swede to go to GAZ right now.

BTW, Obama is on his way to Russia, and will then visit Italy (bear hug with Sergio?) and then Ghana.

@kuba: thanks for the 9-5 nose job info. I really need to get high-speed so I can at last enter the official Saab websites.

@Zippy: thanks, you can add the 'u' or not since half the U.S. is still in rebellion, and the other half wishes we were still drinking tea with universal health care. ;)

Swade, don't worry. The first new 9-5 will arrive in Tasmania sometimes in late 2010. ;)

With an impressive 441,881 pages served to 60,051 individual viewers during June, test driving future Saabs in Sweden and elsewhere is probably on your birth certificate by now Swade!

I am sure Saab of Sweden will be inviting you soon. The 'Press' is almost old hat and informed and impartial decision are increasingly being made using Web2.0 channels.

I look forward to your NG9-5 and other new Saab testdrive reviews.

I agree with Karen and ARUK.

Contemporary journalism is happening on Web 2.0 channels.
The problem for the marketing divisions in the companies is that information flow is more difficult to control. Everything goes out very fast - and is immediately involved in an extremely exciting process of discussion and reflection.
SAABs reaction on their own "blog" to the leaking of the pictures took almost a week. This is pretty good, but still way to slow. This - plus the fact that SAAB have temporarily halted their communication with Swade - shows that companies are still just learning how to handle these new channels of information.
In the end, the terms of communication and information flow between the company and Web 2.0 journalists have to be defined in a process that requires a lot of innovative spirit, integrity and respect from both sides.

SU is - after all - one of the important and by far the most exciting source of information for SAAB fans world-wide.
And one thing is for sure: We're all waiting for Swade to drive the NG 9-5!

... one the MOST important, that is ... sorry for the understatement!

I also liked the CGI rendered images and can't wait to see the final product. The rear looks like it will offer something really special design wise. It looks like it will maybe offer a hatch style??? If so, it will be good to see Saab get back to their roots with a hatch style, something they were very good at with the classic 900 and 9000. Guess what? Now we are seeing BMW latching onto this concept with their so called 2010 GT models and also Audi wading into the fray with their A7. Now they are calling these models GT. Now my understanding is GT normally stands for Gran Turismo - a Grand Touring car. Call me a cynic (...cynic....who said that...) but a GT to me is a larger more powerful engined car. Something that has at least a V8 and (in the past) a V12 aka Ferrari 365, 400 and now the F599, etc. Oh, and also the Porsche 928. Anyway, when it comes to strong hatch design with great utility capability, Saab were the leaders in this design over 30 years ago - now they return to their roots. I guess copy is the strongest form of flattery - thank you BMW and Audi.....now stand aside and watch this space!. Speaking of form, Saab (and Scandanavians more generally) are all about Form and Function. Go Saab!

Mehope these companies are "testing the waters" in respect to hatchback design. The quest for ever better aerodynamics, also triggered by EU and US regulations in respect to lower consumption, really seems to force the manufacturers to get away from the practical?->get a wagon vs. elegant?->get a sedan bipolar thinking. Hithertoo, they have been reluctant to really get away from the sedans, look at the Jaguar XF. Looks like a hatch, has no tailgate. The BMW GT is a step deeper into this terrain, since, while still having a lid, it also has a tailgate (similar to the Skoda Superb). However, the lid is a joke, as it only opens up a vertical, unusable hole in the back of the car (unlike the Superb).

However, in view of lower consumption, it is more important to sell less of those wagons. Here, the hatchback concept is more beneficial than with the sedans, since the difference in aerodynamics is greater.

Hopefilly, the Porsche Panamera will help change the image of the hatchback concept.
