Before the Saab Aero-X……

August 25, 2009 in Saabology

Saab designed and built the Aero-X concept car in just 12 months. It all started very early in 2005 and was shown at the Geneva show early in 2006.
I believe these sketches are from very early that process, maybe even earlier. They’ve come from a Djup Strupe well placed to know.
K-SeggSaab1.jpg
This is obviously not a car that’s going into production in any way, but it seems to be a good insight into what sort of things were going through the designers’ minds at the time.
The sketch above, for example, shows the car as being a mid-engined V8 – quite a step from the traditional Saab layout.
K-SeggSaab2.jpg
K-SeggSaab3.jpg
The other interesting thing about this concept sketch is the side profile. This is obviously a Saab from the front, but those side views almost show a hint of Koenigsegg, don’t you think?
K-SeggSaab4.jpg
My thanks to Djup Strupe for passing along this insight into the designer’s mind. It’s a very exciting glimpse.
Personally, I wouldn’t be opposed if they tidied up the front and brought this baby to life!

GM trying to hang on to Opel?

August 25, 2009 in News

There are a number of reports starting to circulate, stating that General Motors may be working on a financial plan that will allow it to retain it’s ownership of Opel.
The whole story starts with a report in the Wall St Journal that I can’t access, but it’s covered elsewhere as well.

General Motors is looking at shelving a German-backed bailout of its Opel European car arm, the Financial Times reported. The U.S. carmaker and its advisers are instead considering raising about 3 billion euros ($4.3 billion) of rescue funds for Opel and its British Vauxhall brand from the U.S. and other European governments, including the U.K. and Spain.

These reports are quite fresh and there are still reports going around that negotiations are taking place for Opel’s sale. I guess it’s pretty early to say what’s going on with any particular authority, but the way GM’s been stalling on this transaction, it’s not overly surprising.
For those who are worried that they might try and pull the same stunt with Saab, bear in mind that the deal signed with Koenigsegg Group last week was a binding agreement. The Saab transaction will go ahead.
Magna were merely nominated as a preferential bidder early in the piece. It seems they’re still the preferred bidder in the German government’s mind, but GM prefers RHJ International, and that may only be if they’re forced to sell.

Another Monte Carlo found….

August 25, 2009 in Saabology

I do not intend to bother you with every Monte Carlo that I – or others – see on our travels around Australia, but I do intend to share Saab Stories where they exist, and such is the case here with the discovery of Monte Carlo #23.
If you’re not in-the-know, there were only 195 Monte Carlo yellow Saab 9-3s made in this particular 1999 configuration, which were called a Saab 9-3 Monte Carlo here in Australia and a Saab 9-3 SE Sport elsewhere. Australia got 50 of them and they were all individually numbered. Mine is #9.
The story of #23 is a nice Saab discovery story and it’s best told by the man involved, Peter W.
Peter got in touch with me after Googling his car for some more information about it and landing on my previous writings about this model at Trollhattan Saab. He lives in Australia’s capital city, Canberra.

——
My name is Peter W, and I’m the very recent aquirer of SAAB Monte Carlo #23.
DSCF0013.JPG
I haven’t owned a SAAB before and only noticed this one for sale while browsing the local newspaper. I had the urge for something different after driving mostly utes, vans and trucks for years. There are a few other cars in the garage already. I have a (neglected) Riley, a 68 XT Ford Fairmont with Clev351, 4spd, susp etc, as well as an AU Ford V8 1-tonne ute, a Mercedes Sprinter (ex-ambulance) and a Ford Trader pantec for work…… oh, also an old Harley. All are registered except for the Riley (& spare car).
There’s not too much luxury on that list, so the small Saab ad drew my curiosity….. and research, which is where I found the Trollhattan site archives amongst other Monte Carlo stuff.
When I saw the car on Thursday evening I was most impressed. I should say at this point that some of my family are rather fanatical Saab owners, so I knew a little about them, though I hadn’t owned one myself.
DSCF0011.JPG
The owner for the last two years was a very straightlaced immigration department employee who was being posted to Shanghai for 3 years…. in 3 weeks time, so he had to sell (albeit very reluctantly) and was asking $9,400 for his very high kms Monte (230k!!). It may have covered some miles, but it’s still in fantastic condition. It’s never been smoked-in, the jack and tools were still in their original plastic. The silver wheel nuts are unmarked.
The logs and original receipts show that the car was bought new by Wollongong University on a fleet plan with a garage address at Williamsdale, a small hamlet south of Canberra. It was driven by Mike Codd, the Chancellor of Wollongong Uni, who is also on the Qantas board, is an ex-Secretary with the Prime Minister’s Dept etc, so it was presumably used to ‘commute’ between Canberra and Wollongong a lot.
I checked a few sites with regard to common faults and problems and found the only thing that seems prone to failure is some missing pixels from the display, though all are working OK on mine. I offered him $8,000 which he accepted and I took delivery over the weekend.
The verdict – I SMILE everytime I look at it. I’m an INSTANT CONVERT after only 150 kms travelled!
DSCF0009.JPG
Its a five-door hatch with a 5 speed manual so it has the H.O.T. 147kw motor… luvly, luvly. Coincidentally, the only external damage is bumper knock to the RH front, almost identical to that on yours. The headlight wipers and rear window ‘squirter’ don’t work but all else is as-new.
Recent receipts show replacement of a computer component at almost $3k, and surprisingly the welding repair of a cracked bulkhead in ’07 at nearly 200,000kms that the dealer did under warranty. They said it was something that shouldn’t happen, so didn’t charge (This was/is a recall issue – SW).
The original three-spoke alloy wheels might be poo-poo’d by some other subscribers for being only 16″, but just cruise past a glass building or shopfront with them and the reflection of the moving spokes is bloody spectacular…. I’m already quite biased here.
DSCF0016.JPG
The Monte will be going to live in my old man’s garage for a few weeks until I can make undercover space available. Even though he’s in his late 70′s now, he’ll be out there polishing and slapping on the Armour-All until it shines even more. That’ll make up for not having it at hand right away.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for pre-providing so much info and on-line enthusiasm, making my research and purchase so satisfying. I realise I might be in for some expensive upkeep with a car with so many miles on it, so may well be needing advice or contacts in the future.
Regards from a (new) fellow Monte Carlo owner…. Pete W

UPDATE – Saab wheel nut covers

August 25, 2009 in sponsors

Over the weekend I posted a product review for the genuine Saab wheel nut covers.
Here’s a quote from that review:

If there was one thing I’d like to change about these, or at least try out, it would be to get a set of these in silver plastic rather than black.

capsani.gifIt’s just come to my attention that site sponsor, State of Nine, has that wish covered. The animation on the left shows the black covers, but there’s a picture of the silver ones below.
State of Nine sell sets of wheel nut covers and you get a range of choices that will cover all color wishes and model types. They sell the black type that I tried out on my Monte Carlo, as well as selling a range of silver (chrome) wheel nut covers, too.
In addition, you can specify whether your car has 4 wheel nuts per wheel or 5, and you’ll get a set of either 16 or 20 to suit your vehicle.
Of course, they also include the removal tool and these covers come with free shipping in the United States.
Click here to visit the State of Nine wheel nut covers product page.

Tuesday Snippets – Digital edition

August 25, 2009 in Saabology

Wow. Do I have some pics to post later, or what?!
12 hours. Nothing you’ll ever drive, but something you can dribble over as you ponder what could have been. Djup Strupe hit a nice big juicy one this time.

Last night I posed the question about Saabs and potential iPhone apps.
This morning there’s a guy at Wired.com who’s found a nice in-built iPhone holder in his Saab 9-5.
dscn5551jpg.jpg
——
It seems that guy with the lost keys is determined to pay for them by writing about them and getting it published everywhere.
Today, he pops up on ESPN – and still doesn’t mention that it’s only $1000 because he lost both sets of keys rather than getting a new one when his first set went missing.
I guess the Swedish press aren’t the only one who like to slant a story.

Saab dealers are having to diversify a little to get through what is obviously a tough time. Whilst they’re not diversifying in the way that some Hummer dealers are, it’s good to see some innovation and hard work from these guys.
Shaw Saab in Norwell, Mass, are promoting their Driven Perfection car detailing business. They’ve made a little movie about it on Youtube and I’m pleased to pass it on here at SU.

Do you have an iPhone and would you want a Saab app?

August 25, 2009 in Saabology

This is just a quick straw poll.
I’m not considering trying to develop an app, just in case you’re wondering.
I saw this story over the weekend of a roadside assistance app that MINI have developed for US owners to download onto their iPhone or Blackberry.

MINI IS THE FIRST MANUFACTURER TO LAUNCH A MOBILE APPLICATION FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
MINI owners can now access roadside assistance with the touch of an icon
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – August 20, 2008… MINI USA announced today the introduction of a free app to MINI owners that allows access to roadside assistance with the touch of an icon. The new MINI Road Assist mobile application was developed by Allstate Roadside Services and is available for iPhone and select BlackBerry users. The app connects users to roadside assistance while automatically supplying the service provider with all relevant information about the vehicle, most importantly, its exact location.

MINIapp.jpg
The jury’s still out in my mind as to whether an app that focuses solely on your car’s propensity to break down is a good idea, but…….the notion of serving your young and hip clients this way sounds like a good one.
——
I don’t have an iPhone, but I get enough emails with “sent from my iPhone” written in the footer to know that they’re very popular.
If you’ve got one, would you want some sort of similar app from Saab? Or a different app?
What kind of Saaby app would you want?
Saab’s market researchers are quite possibly reading the funny pages this right now, so fire away.

The Swedish Press – reading between the lines….

August 24, 2009 in Editorial

We’ve had a healthy debate in comments to a previous post about the accuracy and fairness of the Swedish press when it comes to reporting about matters concerned with Saab.
My contention is that much of the Swedish press are reporting situations in a manner that suits their editorial desire for match a populist opinion. Facts are nice, but overlooking them is……kind of OK.
I’d like to take apart a story that appeared in e24 today. It seems pretty typical of the kind of article that I find to be sensationalist, and needlessly critical of Saab.
What are the odds that if the Koenigsegg deal comes through OK, and Saab are still around in three years time, that press outlets like this would print a retraction or apology?
Here’s the article, with my thoughts scattered throughout. My thanks to Blogo for translating it and sending it through.
This will probably be a long one, so sit back, relax and read….

“Saab will go bankrupt within a few weeks”
2009-08-24 | Posted 09:51 | Updated 10:52

Remember that headline. It’s not conditional. It doesn’t leave room for interpretation. It’s unequivocal. e24′s only ‘out’ from this is the fact they’ve put it in quotation marks. But don’t let that fool you – it’s a deliberate editorial decision.

Saab’s management will be forced to file for bankruptcy within a few weeks. This is the opinion of initiated analysts that E24 has spoken to. The basic problem is that there is neither sales volume nor financing that works.

“If we’re wrong, it’s not our fault”

Although Saab emerged from reorganization last week, there are many questions surrounding the company’s financial situation. Sales have folded and in July only 79 cars were sold to private individuals.

Total sales were down around 70% in July, the same as they’ve been for most of this year. They’ve highlighted the 79 cars sold privately as that was highlighted in the news this month. The monthly trend has not changed, however, since the start of the year. “Sales have folded” should have been reported in March, not as if it’s news right now.

The company also has a millstone around its neck because it must be able to pay around 3 billion to its current parent company GM and the Swedish government by 17 June next year under the negotiated arrangement.

True, they’ve got debts, but the vast majority of those debts – around 90% – are to GM. This has been reported as fact throughout the reorganisation but is conveniently left out here. Do you think GM are going to be the ones to put Saab into liquidation next year?
Not likely.

Saab 9-3x website updated

August 24, 2009 in Saabology

With thanks to Dippen for the heads-up…..
Those of you interested in the Saab 9-3x might also be interested to know that the Saab Sweden website has just updated it’s Saab 9-3x offerings. There’s plenty of great information there for people to look over.
It’s all quite slick and well done and I’m sure it’s going to make a good impression on the people that get to see it. I just hope there’s enough of them, because the reports say this is a very capable vehicle.
UPDATE: the SaabUK site has the same stuff – good!

An open letter to Koenigsegg-Saab – come out punching

August 24, 2009 in Editorial

9000-06.jpg
Saab are in a strange position when it comes to public perception.
The thing that’s often worked against Saab in the global space in the last 10 years – relative anonymity – is actually working for Saab in many countries at the moment. Sure, sales are down all around the world this year, and in a big way, but I think sales might be down by even more if Saab were getting the caning worldwide that they’re getting from the Swedish press right now.
The Swedish press, as a group, must have been hit by a Saab when they were small. They’ve been cutthroat in their criticism of Saab’s situation right from the get-go. I saw an article the other day where IF Metall chief, Paul Akerlund, criticised the press for printing beat-up reports and in the very same article, the reporter tried to tie US mortgage-meathead Daniel Sadek to the Koenigsegg bid (Mark Bishop worked with/for Sadek several years ago). There’s no evidence whatsoever to suggest this, it’s just relationship based speculation in the wildest extreme. But hey, if you throw enough mud then some of it will stick.
On the other hand, the rest of the world’s motoring press still has a soft spot for Saab, partly due to cars like the 900 and the 9000 Aero, and partly because they know that GM ownership of Saab has been disastrous and identity-sapping for the more distinctive Swedish brand.
Fortunately for Saab, they deal in the global space. It’d be nice to have a little more local support, but I guess Saab are just going to have to have some success before they can convince the local press that they were wrong – and they are wrong!
Saab are taking the initiative with the 2010 Saab 9-5 and releasing information about the car later this week (Thursday, to be precise). I think that’s a good aggressive move, ensuring that the car won’t get lost amongst the Germans at the IAA in Frankfurt mid-September.
That’s one good move, but I hope there’s a few more to come.
First up, I’d love to see the Koenigsegg Group quit the games they’re playing with the Swedish government. Whether we like it or not, Fred, Maud and Jo-jo have the public on their side and while that’s the case, you are not going to get a single öre out of them. You’d be better served by getting Augie Fabela to throw in some pocket change, rolling up your collective sleeves and concentrating on the EIB loan guarantees.
The other good move would be to come out on the front foot and market the living daylights out of your new vehicles. Saab’s been crying out for an expanded range for so long now and they will have two fantastic new cars for people to drive and buy.
CVK.jpg I’d love to see this guy – who, whether he likes it or not, is the new public face of Saab – come out and speak with confidence about the deal, the future, and the cars that will either enhance or embarass his family name in the future.
Right now, the energy that’s going into “who’s paying for what” could be going into telling prospective Saab owners about how good the 9-3x and new 9-5 are. Saab are going to need these customers to provide the essential cashflow they require to keep the wolves from the door now that they’re no longer under the protection of the Swedish courts. They’re not going to need these customers in 12 months from now – they’ll need many of them in the next 12 weeks.
Saab were the minnow in the GM family and they were treated as such. I don’t know how it makes you feel and I don’t know how it makes the Koenigsegg people feel, but the fact that the company who was one of the first to master engine management (APC), practically the first to mass produce a turbocharged vehicle range, was one of the first to use 4 valves per cylinder in mass production……. when a company with a history like this has to wait for something like direct injection to trickle down from the Pontiac-freaking-Solstice, it bursts my boiler!
I’m sick of Saab being the one that gets the crumbs from the table and what’s more, I’m sick of Saab having to accept it. I’m sick of seeing tossers in BMWs and now Audis (sorry Eggs) getting the adulation of not only the motoring press, but the great unwashed as well. I don’t want them all fawning over Saab, but I do want Saab to build a product that stands on it’s own two (four?) feet – one that demands respect.
This is a grand opportunity to set sail for a new horizon. Saab could have their destiny in their own hands again. What it will take, initially, is a hell of a lot of focus from the people that can make it happen, great new products, and a positive message about Saab being Swedish again, and a return to innovation.
It really is possible. I can feel it in my bones.
All it needs is the right people to make it happen.

Eker: on Saab and marzipan

August 24, 2009 in News

This article actually came out last week but I’m publishing it now for three reasons.

  1. Stig, from Tokyo, has provided an excellent translation, and
  2. I’m kind of fascinated by Eker’s apparent fondness for cake.
  3. Oh, and it’s also got some news-type opinion about the Saab sale process from one of the men right in the middle of the whole deal. I guess that’s important, too.

The article originally appeared in Fredrikstad Blad, a paper from Eker’s home town.
Here’s the translation, with thanks to Stig.
——
Bard Eker: The purchasing process will last until the end of the year.
Bard Eker and the Koenigsegg Group thinks the purchasing process will last until the end of the year, but the Fredrikstad citizen is convinced that it will end with (the Koenigsegg Group) purchasing Saab.
Last Monday it became known that the Koenigsegg Group has signed a binding agreement with General Motors concerning the purchase of Saab.
Among other things, Bard Eker and the Koenigsegg Group are now working on the financing aspects.
- It is a long process, and there are lots of pieces of the puzzle that has to be put in their right location. This was (just) one of the pieces, Eker says to f-b.no.
Cannot have any marzipan cake yet
Eker underlines that he is convinced that this (process) will go it’s full course, but he does not think that the purchase will be fully completed until a bit into next year.
- The process will take its time until the end of the year. We cannot pop the champagne cork or have any marzipan cake yet, but I am fully convinced that this will go well, he said.
He does not think there is any danger in that the process will take a long time.
- This is a complex thing, he says.
He says that the media has twisted a lot of the truth.
- It is very important to keep the lid shut. It does not help the process when completely unbelivable things are written, he says.
A lot of people want to talk to Eker
NTB (Norwegian News Agency) wrote earlier today that the Koenigsegg Group’s agreement with General Motors concerning taking over the shares (stock) of Saab Automobile is another step towards creating an independend Saab, according to car (automobile) analytic Matts Carlsson.
After the news emerged that General Motors today have confirmed that they have signed this agreement, Bard Eker’s telephone have not been quiet for one moment.
- A few hundred people have been trying to get hold of me today, Bard Eker tells.
——
In line with Eker’s thoughts, I’ve started looking around for appropriate marzipan cakes (they take a while to make, you know) and found the following from a Swedish Bakery in Chicago.
It’s even in a Saab(like) color!!

Monday morning snippets – quotable edition

August 24, 2009 in Saabology

The Financial Times has a good summary article on the Koenigsegg Group’s bid for Saab and what they’d like to do with it.

….the agreement raised as many questions as it answered, not least how a tiny niche manufacturer with 45 employees could turn round a mass-market carmaker that GM could not make profitable in two decades.
Mr Koenigsegg insists the answer is simple. As part of the GM behemoth, Saab never received the attention it needed.
He said: “It was very difficult for Saab to have a clear vision for the future and fine-tune its products. We will unleash the creativity within Saab and allow them to do what they’re good at.”
Just as Koenigsegg sports cars offer an individualised alternative to rivals such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, he wants to re-establish Saab as the quirky, niche brand of its 1970s-80s heyday. “It is a more personal and unique brand [than other carmakers],” he says. “It should be a statement in itself.”

Amen, brother.
——
And Tompa produces a quotable quote in comments …..

What Koenigsegg must do is put the cards on the table. To show their financial strength. But then…..
Please Merbanco, look into a deal with Koenigsegg. They have the enthusiasm needed to make Saab prosper and become Saab again. On top of that they have enough tech skills to produce their own V8 and one Heck of a supercar. Combined with Saabs strenghts this could all become something like the turnaround of Audi in the mid 80´s… Only better. Why not be a part of all this?
You are Saab fans, please show it in direct support.

Amen, brother.
——
Moving away from quotes….
There’s a guy on Flickr named Public Class who posted the following image with a very interesting caption:

All movie material is being recorded for the new campaign for Saab 93-X. Keep an eye out, the the campaign will probably be online in a couple of days!

Saab9-3xshoot.jpg
——
Well done to our Unofficial Saab Ambassador in the UK, Robin M, for scoring this convertible as a restorer over the weekend. The lady owner was pleased to let it go for a token price on the promise that it would be taken care of and returned to some former glory.
Robin900Convertible.jpg
Incidentally, Robin has over 12,000 images on Flickr. Absolutely amazing!
——
The Opel deal still isn’t done, with GM, the Opel Trustees Board and the German Government still butting heads on who’s going to get the nod.
Here’s a good summary.

On the road to the 99T….

August 23, 2009 in Troll Stuff

As regulars here will know, I’ve recently purchased a Saab 99Turbo to restore. Unfortunately, that means I have to sell my Mazda MX-5 as the money needed to restore the 99 is all tied up in the Mazda.
After a lot of trouble getting half-decent photos (a conspiracy involving the weather and my camera batteries) the MX-5 is now advertised on the web, and I finally got the chance to get some really decent photos today.
As you know, I love sharing good photography and if I may be so presumptuous, I’d like to post a few pics of the MX-5 that were taken today.
There was a kind of special occasion going on as Drew B had just finished re-painting the back section of the roof for me. The hardtop had a couple of 1cm stonechips on the sides and some flaky paint on the strip at the rear. It now looks brand new again.
I only had one hardtop photo in the ad, so I went for a drive to a few favourite spots this afternoon to get a few more.

These last three are Drew’s handiwork. I thought there were more photos from my camera, but they fell victim to the camera conspiracy as well.
At this point, it’s been rubbed back and has just been primed….

And the two-pack applied, leading to the photos you see above. Another first class job from the house of Drew…..

TTELA on Saab: now out of reconstruction

August 22, 2009 in News

TTELA have a good summary article today, covering Saab’s situation now that they’ve emerged from a court-protected reconstruction process.

CTM has once again been kind enough to translate it for consumption here at SU. My thanks to him once again.

——

Saab Automobile can buy on credit again. It strengthens Saab’s cash situation. But delays in payment can be the last nail in the coffin for subcontractors.

- Many will pick a fight against that, says Christer Palm, president of the subcontracting organization FKG.

The previous credit on 30-60 days will be used again, instead of payment after a few days.

- It may take 75 days, and not everyone can cope with that. Sure, the suppliers would like to help Saab but not by ruining themselves, says Christer Palm.

He believes that the subcontractors will be tough in their negotiations. Especially as volumes have fallen sharply. The production for this year seems to stay at 25,000 cars compared the previous 100,000.

Saab shows some understanding of the subcontractors concern.

- The rule is that the old agreements are still in force, but in some cases we may need to have a discussion, says Gunilla Gustav at Saabs information department.

Long payment periods are not unusual in the auto industry. Quite the opposite. The unusual in Saab’s case is that the entire company’s existence is threatened. If the deal between General Motors and Koenigsegg Group fails there is a increased risk of closure. So far there is no indication that there is enough money to go through with the purchase.

In the new business plan Saab is considered to need around 11 billion SEK by 2012 when the company will become profitable on its own merits. Koenigsegg Group has so far only put in 720 million, equivalent to 6-7 percent. GM contributes around 2.8 billion in exchange for a share of any profits in the future.

But there is no new money. One part is the loan of about 1.1 billion that Saab got for the operation during the reorganization and that GM intends to write off. Much of that money is already spent. The rest of GM’s effort is paying for the production equipment for the new 9-5. But that agreement is not even finished according to the documents that Saab has submitted to Vänersborgs District Court.

The entire affair is based on Saab getting a loan of 5 billion from the European Investment Bank with the Swedish state guaranteeing it al. Would it become a reality they are still missing 3 billion.

Facts:

Saab is seeking loans for environmental and safety projects valued at 985 million EUR, equivalent to 10 billion SEK. Normally, The European Investment Bank (EIB) grants loans for half that sum, which is around 5 billion SEK. The company must contribute equally.

EIB’s board has its next meeting on September 22. Saab has already calculated that a decision may be delayed until the next meeting on October 21.

After a decision by the EIB, the National Debt Office, which values Saab securities, will make a recommendation to the Swedish government about state guarantees.

According to Saab’s balance sheet from March of this year, there are assets of 8.9 billion SEK, but only 3.2 billion SEK in case of a bankruptcy.

The EU Commission must also approve the guarantees so that they do not conflict with state aid rules.

The EIB has a limit of 400 million EUR per company and year.

Product review – those little Saab wheel nut covers

August 22, 2009 in Saabology, sponsors

David from Saab Australia was inspired to send me these little plastic wheel nut covers after he saw this photo of my old Viggen’s wheels, which I linked to a little while ago.
Doing a quick product review of something as basic as wheel nut covers might seem a little rudimentary to you, but I didn’t know about them before so I figured maybe some others don’t know about them either.
Take a look at the photo linked above and you’ll see some beautiful clean wheels and some very ordinary looking wheel nuts. It’s the same situation with my Monte Carlo (although the wheels themselves could do with a good cleaning), just as it probably is with your car.
Here are the Monte wheels and wheel nuts, photographed before putting the wheel nut covers on around lunchtime today.
Click any of the photos to enlarge…..
IMG_1852.jpg
In the package, you get 20 of these little plastic wheel nut covers, as well as a tool for getting them off the wheel nut.

Do NOT lose that little tool as you’ll have a very hard time getting the wheel nut covers off without it. Mine went straight into the center console after use today.
Here’s a SU-tool-tip for the similarly unlearned: Use the removal tool to put them on as well. I found my first few attempts to get the covers on ended up like the one below, with the cover jammed in on an angle. There wasn’t enough room around the nut to get my fingers in there and get it on straight. You can use the tool to line the cover up accurately and the press the cover on with your fingers.

Finally, here’s what they look like with the covers on. Much better.
It’s a very cheap and very effective little cosmetic change. Compare the shot below with the the first one and I think you’ll agree the wheels look much tidier with the covers on.

If there was one thing I’d like to change about these, or at least try out, it would be to get a set of these in silver plastic rather than black.
I could always paint them silver, I suppose, but I can see the paint chipping off pretty easily, leaving the covers looking like the nuts underneath.
If you want to get some of these for yourself, the Saab part number is 12771404 and when I said they were cheap, I meant it. This set of 20 caps with the removal tool costs a miserly A$10.50 here in Australia.

Capturing the Saab Sonett at IntSaab 2009

August 22, 2009 in Saabology

There was a comment from “Marc” in an IntSaab entry about an hour ago and Marc has since sent some photos through via email to accompany the story.
This is typical of some of the magic that accompanies Saab events like this – those little moments you can get involved in, either actively or just as an observer.
Remember as you read this, that there are only six of these Sonetts in existence. Saab could be forgiven for mothballing them but here they are, out on the track, doing what they were made to do.

——
We were making some photos of the Sonett on the oval.
First we were driving in front in a Saab 95 me sitting backwards in the little backseat. Later we were driving behind it, again to make pictures.
JP, one of the organizers had the priveledge to be the passenger in the Sonett I. But he is quite a big bloke so he rose above the little windscreen like too big a mast on a little boat. The driver didn’t particulately like it as he thought JP was fauling the aerodynamics. So, to squeeze the last rpm out of the Sonett JP was ordered to get his head down but as he was already cramped in, all he could do was bent it down a little.
It must have helped. When we came on one of the straights, I told our driver to give the 95 the berries to get closer to the Sonett but he already had the pedal to the metal and as we were crawling to 150kph I could see the Sonett getting away from us….
JP told me later they were nodging 7000rpm backshifting.

My thanks to Marc for the photos and one of those special little insights from IntSaab 2009.
If you ever get the chance to go to one of these big Saab events – whether it be in the US, greater Europe or in Sweden itself – I’d encourage you to take the opportunity.
It’s well worth it.
