This Sonett creates a very interesting look, wearing some original Incas from the 99T on the autocross. I like the combination a lot.

Saab have a big week coming up

August 16, 2009 in Saabology

We’ve stabbed at guesses for big weeks in the past, such as the week when Koenigsegg lost their exclusivity over the bidding process a number of weeks ago. There was an outside chance that someone might slip in and contest the situation, but it was never to be.
This week, there’s no guesswork involved whatsoever. Saab have a deadline and something will happen.
That deadline comes, effectively, on the 19th. If Saab are going to ask for an extension to their reconstruction process, they have to do it before the 20th August.
Everyone’s got their theory on what’s going to happen, and what it might mean. Naturally, I’ve got mine, too.
It’s my belief that Saab will NOT file for an extension to their reconstruction period, and if they do file for an extension, then i’ll start to get worried.
I think Saab will exit reconstruction this week and that it won’t be long thereafter until a deal is signed with the Koenigsegg Group to take ownership of the company. I think they’ll do whatever they can to get this stitched up as soon as possible.
Saab are in a position to exit, primarily because of one thing – the accord they reached with creditors to wipe off 75% of their debts, with a delay of 12 months on payment of the remainder. With that agreement in place and Saab’s business plan and workforce organised, there is no real reason to stay under the protection of the court.
In fact, there is at least one very good reason to get away from it.
It’s my understanding that whilst Saab are in reconstruction, they have to pay their new accounts within six days of the debt being incurred. Saab sales are low and the cars they make today may not accrue income for some time, hence a similar amount of lead time for new accounts payable would be beneficial for their cashflow situation.
Upon entering reconstruction earlier this year, GM endowed Saab with what was calculated to be enough cash to get through until the end of the year. With production at a low 100 units a day, they should be able to manage OK, and the exit from reconstruction should actually help.
If the K-Segg deal is coming to closure by the end of September, as has been stated by Saab to be the plan, then there’s no need to extend the reconstruction period for another three months.
On the other hand, if they do file for an extension, that would tell me that the deal with Koenigsegg Group is not close enough to being done. That would tell me that Saab actually need another three months protection from creditors.
——
One way or another, something is going to happen this week. Hopefully that something will actually be…..nothing.
i.e. No extension filed. Just a smooth exit from court protection to regular operation, with an announcement on the K-Segg deal imminent.
And a big collective sigh of relief will be breathed by all……

SvD: 2010 Saab 9-5 is Pride of Trollhattan, but is it enough?

August 16, 2009 in News

There were a couple of great articles in Swedish newspaper, SvD, in the last few days. They were focused on the 2010 Saab 9-5 and what it might mean for Saab – and whether it will be enough to see Saab succeed in these difficult times.

I’d like to thank Blogo for providing these translations. The stories do raise some interesting questions and I think the quote from Fritz Henderson is somewhat telling.

There are two articles, and I’ve placed a few pictures of the 9-5 in between them from Auto Motor and Sport (who SvD also tapped for pictures).

——

Sneak Premiere of 9-5
Published: August 14, 2009, 15.58

THE CHALLENGER

We now have photos of the new Saab 9-5. The pride of Trollhättans is now ready to challenge the upper class of automobiles.

“The broad shouldered Swede”. That’s what the Saab 99 was nick-named when it arrived in 1967 because it was considered to have generous width in the back seat. In collaboration with Auto Motor Sport, we can present pictures of the new 9-5 where this concept gets a whole new dimension.

The new 9-5 as presented to the audience at the Frankfurt Salon in September, is a completely new model replacing the 12 years old 9-5. It is based on GM’s platform for larger cars, the epsilon platform, which the Opel Insignia also is based on. But 80 percent of the 9-5 is developed by the Swedes, the Saab people point out.

I saw full-scale models of the car in May, when I also had the opportunity to test drive a prototype. And Saab has really worked hard to try to get as much Saab uniqueness as possible into this car.

-All you can see of interior and exterior is developed in Sweden, said Mats Fägerhag, head of technical development to SvD in May,

A chrome bar at the bottom of the side windows goes up against the top of the back door forming “hockeystick profile”, a legacy from the Saab 99.

Engine-wise, there is a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 180 horsepower and the 9-5 will also offer a 220 hp petrol version, a V6, and several diesel options – and in the future we are also promised a hybrid.

SvD will report directly from Frankfurt and describe how it is accepted by international critics on September 14. The car will be launched in April next year – if Saab can find a new owner that is.

Important 9-5 a major player for Saab
Published: August 14, 2009, 16.35

Saab is fighting for its survival on several fronts. New 9-5 is important, but success is not a sure thing

Pictures of the 9-5 have been leaked (see page 6) and it is a worthy challenger to the top of the premium class in many ways. A number of Saab-specific details and an elaborate interior are Swedish spears supposed to penetrate the chests of BMW and Audi. I had the oppoertunity to drive a prototype in the spring and have seen full-scale models and will support the view that it is a good car.

But how far will that take us?

It is big. An entire five meters long and unconfirmed information says it weighs close to 2 tonnes. This in the world of automobiles where the buzz word is downsizing.

I remember a press conference at the Paris Salon last autumn. At that time, it had been leaked that the new 9-5 would be larger than the present. I and some other journalists got to meet GM’s CEO, Fritz Henderson and I asked if he didn’t consider the new Saab 9-5 to be too big. Then he said “Viewed in hindsight, if we were to rebuild it, it would be smaller, but I still think it will be a success.”

He acknowledged that if a new car had been developed today it would have been smaller.

During the entire process of development the 9-5 has been matched against the Audi A6 and will enter an aggressive hornet’s nest where a brand new Audi A6 soon will be presented and where BMW’s new 5-series will be launched this autumn. But the Saab 9-5 is larger than these and is closer to eg Audi’s A8 in size, which measures 506 centimeters.

Demands are even further increased.

Saab engineers have almost on a daily basis, successfully fought against GM in Rüsselsheim to get quality solutions in the 9-5. That is good. But in the hornets nest (large luxurious cars) brand means everything. And the question is whether the Saab brand is strong enough. The almost unimaginable turbulence which has been the past six months has not helped the reputation, where the Saab in recent years has generally been perceived as dressed-up Opels.

The question is also on the car, which also looks big in reality, attracts the specific Saab target gruop, which according to Saab themselves, consists of architects and other modern intellectuals.

The answer will be found when – or if – the car starts to be sold. For at the time of writing Saab is still without a new owner.

The Theme Song in Swade’s 2009 Soundtrack

August 16, 2009 in Troll Stuff

Well, as all of you regular readers know, our intrepid host, Steven Wade, has seen the light and admitted that his dalliance with the Mazda MX-5 was disappointing and, well, a little less satisfying than his first love, the Saab 99 Turbo.
And I quote:

…the MX-5 just doesn’t ignite any passion within me. It’s a lot of things, but an automotive aphrodisiac is not one of them. Not for me, at least.
… I have learned that I should have waited for the Monte to become the fun car I tried to acquire with the MX-5. That would have left garage space and a whole pile of money for the car I believe will really satisfy my Saab lust – another 99 Turbo.

Note the words used — “ingite”, “passion”, “aphrodisiac”, “lust”.
It’s a tall order to come up with a theme song that sums all of this up. One that requires the right words, the right tone and the right level of melodrama. I think that I’ve found it. And frankly, I’m surprised that I didn’t make the connection before.
So, for what it’s worth, this song is dedicated to Steven in Hobart. Everything’s going to turn out fine…. (after the jump)

Saturday Night Quick Snippets – 2nd place edition

August 15, 2009 in Saabology

Hey everyone. I hope you’re having a great weekend.
Today I started the cleanup of the MX-5 ready for sale so that I can get stuck into the new 99Turbo project. The ad should go online tomorrow.
Tonight I went to a trivia night, an annual fundraiser at my old church. Our team came 2nd for the 2nd year in a row. Darn history and local knowledge questions!
——
I didn’t know that Autoblog had a UK affiliate. They don’t give them much publicity on the all-conquering US site.
Upon reading this entry, I can see why.
Outsider view – Will Saab go to the wall?
——
Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have new pricing out on Saab leasing in the UK, supposedly with the addition of the Saab 9-3x to the list, though I can’t see it there myself.
Considering the lack of Saab leasing options anywhere in the last little while, this is a good and noteworthy thing (I think)
——
The Local reports that an employee/dealer buyout is looming as an option for Volvo. It seems the people really don’t want to work for the Chinese.
Geely are still regarded as the favourites to purchase Volvo, but the natives in Sweden are restless.

The engineering trade union at Volvo Cars is reported to be behind the initiative due to provide opposition to the possibility of a Chinese owner, reported business daily Dagens Industri.
Konsortium Jakob AB was listed at the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket) in July. Employees in Sweden and Belgium will have the chance to buy into the company with two monthly salaries. Volvo dealers will also reportedly to be offered the opportunity to buy in. AB Volvo, as well as an unnamed Swedish institutional investor, is also to have expressed interest in joining the consortium.

——
And finally, some nice HDR work via Flickr.

Hirsch Performance – now available in the USA

August 15, 2009 in News

I’m pleased to see an announcement this morning from site sponsor – State of Nine – that they are now a US distributor for Saab’s official tuning house – Hirsch Performance.
The release:
——
Hello from the Saab Owners Convention!
You may recall our promises of great new features for 2009 and I’m happy to announce today one of the biggest (still more to come…). Today State of Nine is proud to launch our exclusive Hirsch Performance Product Offering – not previously available in the USA! BMW has M-Power, Mercedes has AMG, now Saab Customers in the USA have Hirsch!
Click here for the SON Hirsch page.
mountain_cc.gif Some of you may also recall my European journey in June 2008 where I was meeting with our European suppliers and finding new products. The image to the right was taken by me after about 20 minutes of switchb-backs in the Swiss Alps in my diesel rental car. You could say we went over mountains to bring you this product line.
Having visited the Hirsch facility myself, I can tell you this is not a group of people in a garage making Saab modifications. Not only could you eat off the floor in any of the offices, engine rooms or shop floors, everything that Hirsch produces is beautiful and precise. They even have instructions on how to install their Hirsch Badge to the back of your Saab. I cannot stress quality of this product line enough and I can assure you that any of these products will enhance your Saab and distinguish it from most other Saabs on the road.
As an additional benefit, we are offering Free Continental US Shipping on all our Hirsch Products. This means that your order will arrive to you from our US warehouse without any additional shipping charges, brokerage fees, VAT, sales tax, etc.
When placing your order for any Hirsch Products we require some standard information about your Saab, including your VIN#, so be sure to have that info handy. Including this VIN# will enable us to make sure that the item you ordered is fit to install precisely in your Saab. After reviewing your order, we will import the product(s) and assign your order a UPS Tracking Number. You can reference this tracking number to monitor movement of the item(s) after they arrive at our US facility. Please allow 2-4 weeks for activity/delivery. We expect to improve the import time as we measure the variation of products ordered.
I hope you enjoy these new products and we are excited to grow this offering to you over the months and years to come.
Remember to check out our other August Promotions as well. Here is to a great Saab Convention this weekend!
Enjoy Your Saab,

More about the Saabs United Historic Rally Team

August 15, 2009 in Saabology

A few days ago, i wrote what I guess you could call the official introduction to the Saabs United Historic Rally Team. It gave you the what, when and who.
I guess you could call this the unoffical introduction – they why.
Thumbnail image for Saabs United Historic Rally TeamThe decision to play a part in sponsoring this team was pretty instantaneous. Jörgen popped the question and I answered in the affirmative with my next email. I must have been on a good thing because as soon as I mentioned it to my US-based co-pilot here, Eggs n Grits, he responded the same way and my email to him wasn’t any sort of solicitation, it was just to let him know what was going on.
So why are we doing this?
I can’t speak for Eggs, but for me, this sort of thing is the epitome of what this website and my own personal love for Saabs is all about.
The 99Turbo
I loved my Viggen, but my favourite Saab of all time and the car I’ve had the greatest attachment to from my own experience is my old white 99Turbo. I love the 99s lines, it’s simplicity, the funky interior, the snub nose, the hatch – everything.
Most of all I love the place it holds in Saab’s history – as the vehicle that started the whole turbo revolution. My love for Saabs grew in large part because of my love for the Turbo rush. This is the Saab that started it all.
The chance to participate in an historic motorsport event and restore an old 99T to glory is one that I just couldn’t say no to. It’s a story I’m going to love telling.
The Rally to the Midnight Sun.
Second to the car is the event itself.
The Rally to the Midnight Sun was THE Swedish rally back in the day. This is an event that plenty of Saabs won over the years and it’s written large in the Saab history books.
How could you turn down a chance to participate in such a meaningful event that is held in the country that produced this great marque?
The Experience
I’ve made some great friends in the time I’ve been writing this site, but the fact remains that blogging is a fairly solitary road to travel (in human terms). I’m not complaining as I love the medium, but it does involve a LOT of hours in front of the keyboard.
This site has given me a great insight into Saab as a company and Saab as a culture, but occasionally you’ve got to stop tapping the keys, reading the words, thinking the thoughts – you’ve got to get out there and DO SOMETHING.
I can’t imagine a better ‘something’ to be involved in. To be part of a team, doing my small bit to help build up one of my favourite Saab models of all time, for an event in a place that I’ve loved visiting, an event that crystalizes Saab’s glory days – does it get any better than that?
And if you think the chance to meet legends like Stig Blomqvist et al in person isn’t a decent bone for a Saab dog like me, then you’re kidding yourself!
The team
I’ve noted Jörgen’s cars and events for a while now so I knew already, when he emailed me, that he was a real Saab guy at heart. I didn’t know Bo at all before this, but his credentials are incredibly impressive and I can’t wait to meet the both of them in person.
Having Eggs on board with this venture is the icing on the cake. We’ve never met in person. We’ve only spoken on the phone once, but his generosity of spirit and (like Jörgen) Saab-heart have always meant a steady hand at the tiller and a good ear when it’s needed. To share this journey with him and be over there as part of the team together is going to be a highlight of this adventure.
SaabsUnited in action
I guess most of all, this is a chance to do something that’ll be fun, inspirational, and of course, a great story.
This site is about people loving Saab cars. It’s about experiences. The joy of man and Swedish machine.
Playing a part in this team, building that car and doing my little bit in getting it across the line will be like putting flesh on those bones.
Bring it on!

Saab Pride – Alcan 900 style

August 14, 2009 in Saabology

Thumbnail image for Saab Pride The Saab Pride section of the site is where were get to celebrate the things the journos miss. It’s not about numbers and finishes, it’s about living – living with a Saab and occasionally doing extraordinary things.
Dan C and the guys from TeamD did something extraordinary back in February 2008. Here’s the story and some great shots of a great car that (as far as I know) is still running strong today.

——
Maybe we should have the beauty shots first:
TeamDSaab900.jpg
This 1985 900 Turbo was the sole 2WD entrant in the 2008 Winter Alcan rally. The event began near Seattle Washington and traveled well above the Arctic Circle, where this shot was taken at Tuktoyaktuk after driving on the winter ice road on the Beaufort Sea. After over 260 thousand miles, the car is still running strong and competing in rallies in the northwest US
Photographer: Hans Adomeit. Owner: Dan Comden
Saab 900
——
I had the good fortune to meet Dan last year at the TS Great Pacific Northwest Meetup on the Seattle fringe.
The car was there in all it’s glory and still looked in remarkably good condition for it’s age, mileage and adventures.
atxxxsaab-3.jpg
teamd900interior.jpg
For those unaware of the Alcan Winter Rally, this is one serious affair, travelling 5,000 miles heading north through British Columbia and the Yukon before coming back south again and finishing in Jasper, Alberta.
Dan and the team bought this Saab 900 for just $250 in order to compete in the event. The trusty Saab got them home without missing a beat!

2010 Saab 9-3 Convertible for Germany

August 14, 2009 in News

I have had two confirmations this evening, following on from the email I received this morning, that the Saab 9-3 Convertible will be retained for production for the 2010 model year.
2010 was scheduled to be a model year with limited production due to the convertible moving production to Trollhattan. Production of the Convertible will resume in Week 39 and will remain at Magna’s facility in Graz until the end of 2009. I’ve received the following limited information regarding specifications.
These specs are for the German market, though most of it should be similar for other markets as well.
——
Standard Equipment:

  • The emissions and fuel consumption of the 2.0t, the 2.0t BioPower and the 2.0T will be reduced when the cars are equipped with manual gearbox.
  • From now on you can get the 240 HP 2.0T Engine
  • The passenger airbag can be switched off (Note by me – think it’s standard in US and other countries since MY08)
  • The 1.8t engine gets 15″ brake discs with 285mm in the front and 278mm in the back

New Packages: (for Germany, not necessarily in other markets)

  • TX Package like the Combi and Sedan
  • Visibility package – with folding mirrors
  • The Comfort package has heated seats as standard and the folding mirrors went to the Visible Package
  • New is the Mirror Package with auto dimming mirrors inside and outside

New option:

  • Only auto dimming mirror for the inside

Outside Colors:

  • Glacier Silver is new
  • Steelgrey, Glassgrey, Electricblue and Iceblue are off the options

Final points:

  • The Special Edition Variant is gone
  • The 2.8T V6 is gone
  • The Driving Package is standard for Aero

Saab News – The crazy week that was

August 14, 2009 in News

Personally speaking, this week has been a whirlwind.
I’ve done 70% of a build on a website for my wife’s paintings, 60% of a build for the SU Historic Rally Team website as well as all the usual stuff like this site, day job work, family, etc. Actually, the family probably got a bit neglected this week. Oh, and I had a 99Turbo purchase buzzing through my head in all that, too.
The net result of this is probably sub-par coverage where the events of the last few days are concerned. Some articles have been followed up and finished off in comments rather than on the front page, which is not the way things should be.
So I thought it important to summarise the news of last few days as it’s been a pretty hectic time.
And don’t worry, many of the major English-speaking outlets are just getting around to covering the Koenigsegg Group ownership saga from last Friday, so you’re still ahead of the non-Swedish-media curve.
On someone leaving the Koenigsegg Group….
The story first broke in GP.se last week that the K-Segg deal for Saab was in danger because one of the K-Segg Group owners was leaving the group.
Joran Hagglund (Industry Ministry Secretary), whilst simultaneously damaging the reputations of both Saab and Koenigsegg, did claw back a little and stated that the departure of one stakeholder was not likely to scuttle the deal.
Dagens Industri seem to be the first publication to name the departing K-Segg Group member as 22% owner, Mark Bishop.
No-one inside the group has officially commented on this, but on-one has denied that someone is leaving, either.
IF Metall union boss, Paul Akerlund, expressed confidence straight away that the deal would still get done.
Questioned for the first time about reorganisation in the context of the different group dynamic, Gunilla Gustavs from Saab indicated that “Saab would leave reconstruction when the time is right….” Saab’s original intention was to not seek a further extension to reorganisation protection, which is due before August 20.
Dagens Industri write again that it is Mark Bishop who has sold his shares in K-Segg Group. Still, this hasn’t been confirmed by anyone in the company.
At the same time, Paul Akerlund is confident that the deal will be ready to be done within 2 weeks. He says that he knows nothing of Bishop jumping ship, but knows that negotiations are ongoing and that even if Bishop sold his stake, he doesn’t see how that would change.
——
On K-Segg’s Finances and EIB Loans….
Things went into overdrive after ‘the Bishop saga’.
Much to everyone’s chagrin, there were still no statements forthcoming from anyone in the Koenigsegg Group, however there were more “inside sources” from the Industry Ministry who were willing to have a chat.
Thus the news that Augie Fabela, Chairman of the Koenigsegg Group, would be meeting with the Swedish Industry Ministry through the week. Now people familiar with proceedings say they’re meeting with someone from Saab or Koenigsegg virtually every day, but this seemed to be something more.
…possibly around $500million more.
Eric Geers said at this time that we will have to wait to see what the final ownership structure would look like, but that Koenigsegg group were strong and ambitious.
Augie Fabela started to emerge as the driving force within the Koenigsegg Group. As such, you should get to know him a little.
DN.se reported that the government now has a clear picture of who’s behind the K-Segg Group, though all concerned still refused to confirm that it was Mark Bishop who sold his stake.
Meanwhile, Koenigsegg sent their business plan for Saab to the European Investment Bank (EIB). This information will be added to application materials already submitted by Saab.
The next meeting where the EIB loan can be approved is September 22. Of course, the Swedish government probably need to provide loan guarantees prior to that.
We also got someinsight into the EIB loans process, where the EIB painted themselves to be quite nasty banking overlords.
——
Saab vehicle production news
Last night a story from DI.se claimed that a need to save money whilst the Koenigsegg deal was awaiting completion had forced Saab to delay the introduction of the 2010 Saab 9-5.
Saab’s union bosses, and later Saab’s PR people, indicated that this story was inaccurate. They also highlighted that 9-3x production had commenced, on schedule.
And finally, when I woke up this morning, there was an email from a European dealer stating that 2010 Convertibles could now be ordered again as production would stay in Graz for some time rather than being moved to Trollhattan.
Saab’s consolidation of production in Trollhattan was a key part of it’s future business strategy, but perhaps the reason for Koenigsegg getting their Business Plan into the EIB only this week is because that strategy might have changed. Maybe they have some other plans for the capacity at Trollhattan?
I’ve written to Saab seeking more information about convertible issue.
——
I think most of these issues were resolved to a large degree, however there are a few questions remaining:

  1. Did Mark Bishop really sell his stake in the Koenigsegg Group?
  2. Is convertible production staying in Graz for the time being?

Saab Convertible back for 2010?!

August 14, 2009 in News

In my inbox this morning from a dealer in Europe…..

Hi Steven,
a few hours ago we got the message from Saab (country withheld) …… that the production of the Convertible is going online again from September 21st. And that the car is not gonna be produced in Trollhättan. The production will stay in Graz at Magna for some time. You can order cars from today on.
And the 2010 ‘vert will get the same changes as the 2010 Combi and Sedan. So you can get the TX Package the new 2.0T with 240Hp and so on.
Cheers

I guess part of the short term cost-watching includes not moving the tooling for the vert for the time being.
More to check on this…. I’m asking around a few dealers in other locations in order to confirm. Email also sent off to Sweden.

Thursday Night Quick Snippets – Opel done edition

August 13, 2009 in Saabology

This’ll be quick, as you’ll need all day to read the Auto Motor and Sport article below.
——
Apparently all issues between GM and Magna have been resolved and the Opel deal is done.

Magna and its Russian partner Sberbank have reached an agreement in principle with General Motors’ management over a contract to buy a stake in GM’s European unit Opel, Magna Co-Chief Executive Siegfried Wolf told Reuters on Thursday
The boards of directors of GM and Canadian automotive group Magna still need to approve a deal before trustees who control a 65 percent stake in Opel can give their final consent.

Now they can get on with the Saab transaction?
Thanks Till!

AMS: Dare to be SAAB!

August 13, 2009 in News

We have something very special today for those of you who, like me, are not blessed with the ability to read/write/speak Swedish.
In their last print edition, Auto Motor and Sport magazine had a feature article on Saab. They surveyed over 1,400 of their readers and tallied their answers into a fantastic feature, which they submitted to Saab executives whilst on site in Trollhattan to photograph the 2010 Saab 9-5.
That article was only available in print, and only in Swedish. One of your fellow visitors to this site, Gunnar L, contacted AMS to seek permission to do a translation to English. He received their OK, as long as we waited until their next print issue before publishing it.
Gunnar got to work and when I got the email in my inbox, I thought I was about to open just a whole lot of translated text. What I opened in that PDF file was a whole lot more than that!!
Every one of you owes Gunnar a cool tasty beverage!!!
We do have a text translation for you to read on site, but we also have a full PDF in English, written on the source PDF imagery, direct from AMS. It as if you got a copy of the original magazine article, but in English.
You can download Gunnar’s PDF here: Hi-Res version and Lo-Res version (Right Click, then ‘Save As’)
I’d like to thank Auto Motor and Sport for granting permission to distribute this article in English. Thanks for a great, read, too.
Most of all, I’d like to thank Gunnar for doing an incredible job – a job so good that AMS themselves are distributing his file!!!

The Readers: DARE TO BE SAAB!
Saab’s future with Koenigsegg. 1,427 AMS readers have participated in a survey on our home page, expressing their views on what kind of cars Saab should build in order to survive. The Saab management was very impressed by the response and have received tons of inspiration. The reader’s views matches Saab’s own plans very well!

What’s so compelling about Saab? A small, Swedish car manufacturer that has been getting by through automotive history, thanks to unconventional designs and engineering – and a management group that has understood that sometimes you have to take chances.
Weak owners have put up with years of big losses, while customers around the world
have continued to love their cars, and maybe even more the image of their cars. An odd
alternative for aware people.
But many business journalists and politicians think that now it’s time to face the facts
and put an end to it all. “Don’t waste good money or even bad money. Let the company
declare bankruptcy. Saab is doomed. When not even GM, the world’s largest car manufacturer, is able to save Saab, how will a Swede, a Norwegian and unknown Americans and Russians be able to do it?”
Who knows? (The answer is in the survey and will be revealed later on).
At the time of writing we’re only weeks from the next chapter in Saab’s history, the acquisition by Koenigsegg Group. If it fails, the Saab/Koenigsegg chapter will be very
short and what comes next will be something completely different.

But, if we are to believe the readers of Auto Motor & Sport, the chance that Saab will survive as a manufacturer of exciting niche cars hasn’t been as good during the last five years, as it is now. It’s time to get started and make all dreams come true.
But, what kind of cars should Saab build, how should they look to make Saab profitable, and what technology should Saab focus on? Which image is right for the future? These are the kind of questions all car bosses around the world think hard about and which will decide the fate and survival of their brands.

Saab 9-5 may be delayed

August 13, 2009 in News

UPDATE – Union heads in Trollhattan dispute this report from DI.se.

Memo to everyone concerned with getting this deal done – PLEASE GET YOUR $#%! TOGETHER – AND SOON!!!
Saab have been working on a reduced production plan for some time. They had hoped to double production a month or so ago and sought government assistance to allow this to happen, but that was knocked back.
Now, in order to preserve funds until the Koenigsegg deal gets done, Saab may have to delay plans for the 9-5s production launch, which was due in th northern Spring next year.
DI.se reports via Blogo (thanks for the better trans!):

Saab Automobile freeze numbers of development projects to save money. This week the planned launches of several new models were moved into the future. The planned increase in production volumes scheduled for after the holidays is also postponed. Following August 24 production will continue at the low volume level of 100 cars per day.
But the Saab 9-3X will be put into production immediately after the holidays, writes Dagens Industri.
The new 9-5 that was to be launched during spring next year may well be delayed, according to DI.
The reason for these measures is that Saab Automobile will do everything to stay afloat while waiting for the future owner, the Koenigsegg Group, and the Government should agree on the terms of the acquisition of Saab.
Cuts and deferred projects places a number of consultants with major Saab contracts in trouble. Recently Saab consultants Aspinova and Idéteknik Lundgrens have gone bankrupt. A few days ago it was announced that the German technology consultant RHL had put its Swedish subsidiary into bankruptcy.
Consultant Epsilon have previously this year been forced to terminate employees and now expect further cuts among its approximately 1000 vehicle consultants.

I imagine the delay might be related to the delivery and installation of tooling for the 9-5. It’s an expensive proposition and without more certainty over when it can all start, the delay might be the best way for Saab to stretch the money that GM gave them to last the rest of the year.
I hope these people can pull their stuff together soon.
