A few more 2010 Saab 9-5 details

September 16, 2009 in Saabology

Every time I go back and look at the 2010 Saab 9-5 once again, I learn a little more about it.
Here’s a few things from this morning.
——
There are three interior colors. I described one as being a ‘Sand’ type color but silly me, it’s Parchment of course and it looks great.
The other two are black and something like ‘Shark Grey’. They have cars here with black and parchment only.
IMG_2036.JPG
IMG_2037.JPG
Ventilated seats are an option and they look sensational on the black interior.
The center armrest has storage inside, of course, and also can be raised and lowered. Raising it also brings it forward a few inches.
IMG_2031.JPG
IMG_2030.JPG
IMG_2025.JPG
——
Someone wanted a closer look at the rear seat entertainment and HVAC controls. They are.
The bit that looks like a casette slot is actually a display panel.
IMG_2026.JPG
——
I’ve done an interview with Andreas Andersson, who’s the product guy in charge of the 9-5. I’ll be transcribing the main points of that and putting up associated photos as time permits.
I’m still discovering new things about the car, though, and it really has been well thought out.
Did I mention it’s now iPod compatible, too?
Full Bluetooth integration, which is an option.
And the diamond cut wheels still looks absolutely sensational.

Auto Motor and Sport Frankfurt Snippets

September 16, 2009 in News, Saabology

Auto Motor and Sport are here and once again, they’re providing some fantastic coverage of the event.
ctm was kind enough to translate some summary points of their article from yesterday.
——
Thoughts on the 9-5

  • “Better than expected”.
  • “A smash hit.”
  • Only drawback: The roof line a little low when getting in the back seat. Also, the headroom in the back not that great, but could be due to the glass roof.

I can confirm that the sunroof does push back the roof area where the lights, etc, are contained. I sat in the back yesterday, however, and it didn’t impose at all on headroom. It does ‘feel’ a little more squeezed just in psychological terms, however.
——
Talking to the head of BAIC and to Kjell ac Bergstrom

  • Learned to drive in a Saab in the U.S 30 years ago.
  • “As long as there is a win-win, then the cultural differences are irrelevant.”
  • All my colleagues here have been educated in the West and many of them has also worked there.”
  • “I undertand the worries [for the Chinese], because people in Sweden do not know our company, we are new to you.”
  • Why interested in Saab? “We like Saab, the brand and the cars. But we will build our own brand and need help with technologies. We have to be a global company. And Saab need to enter China, everybody must. Together we can grow, we can help with production and with dealerships in China.”
  • Product development? “We have to help each other, and Saab has a fantastic green profile that needs more technologies. We have good battery technology and electric cars are the future.”
  • “I have met Christian, a good guy…”
  • AMS talks to Kjell AC Bergstöm (manager for the drivetrains). He is responsible for the group working on what intellectual properties Saab are allowed to license. The stuff that BAIC can use. The plan calls for Saab to develop, in Sweden, the technical solutions for BAIC. BAICs problem is that they plan to go from a large local manufacturer to an independent car producer with their own products.
  • “It looks like we this Friday will be able to summarize a plan on how to move forward but all depends on the deal being finalized. They can read and see all we have, but not copy. First and foremost, they want to manufacture their own engines and gearboxes in China.”
  • The danger with China? “Manufacturing moves towards producing where you sell. It’s insane to ship all those big cargos across the world. I may be naive, but I’m not afraid of the Chinese. We can see that there are those more nearby that don’t care about their partners…” [hehe]
  • “GM want’s a clause about being able to buy into future solutions that we can deliver. and that is very good, that means money in. And it show that they have a huge respect for our know-how, something that they didn’t always showed earlier.”

——
Talking with Jan-Ake Jonsson

  • About BAIC: “The plan calls for them buying 20% of KG but they will not be represented at the board. And they didn’t put forward a bid themselves on Saab, but they were one of the 27 interested parties. They can assist us in China, and that is of huge value. I don’t think you should be afraid of China, the media has blown this fear out of proportion, they [the Chinese] are really good in many areas. And if we reach a higher volume we can discuss local production.”
  • About European buyers: “I think the segment with the 9-3 is growing, but many have to consider the situation in their life with the family when it comes to the size of their cars. I don’t think the changes will be that big, but many will chose smaller engines.”
  • About electric cars: “KG is much more aggressive than GM in their plans on electric cars and hybrids. That is positive. We have definitely electric cars and hybrids in our business plan. But it is all about the costs and the battery technology.”
  • About China in five years: “I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the same journey as the Japanese and the Koreans. The Chinese will definitely move outside China and threaten the mass produces from the low-end segments. The brand will be even more important, and there Saab has a good chance, even BMW, Audi, and Mercedes are beginning to look like mass producers with an incredible amount of models…”
  • About the 9-4X? “Autumn 2010. It’s on track as planned.”

Thanks once again to ctm!

Swade’s in Germany Snippets

September 16, 2009 in News

EnG here to bring a few small bits into the conversation while Swade is filling himself with Schweinshaxe and Ebbelwoi.
Snippet Number One: Interesting video from Frankfurt over on the Saab Newsroom (as posted first by Swade here):
< ![if !IE]>

< ![endif]>

To recap:
1. Chinese ownership comes with easier access to the exploding Chinese market. In the words of Mr. Jonsson, “You gotta be there.”
2. Saab is destined to become “more Swedish” with operations “concentrated in Trollhattan, Sweden”. Music to my ears!
3. Saab will soon be independent of GM and will have the capabilities of a full OEM.
Snippet Number Two: The hatch goes high-end.
Take a good look at this excellent post over at Automobiles Deluxe on the subject of the Porsche Panamerican and the BMW 5-series Gran Turismo. Both are five-door layouts, with the Bimmer going one extra with a nifty little hatch-within-a-hatch design.
If BMW and Porsche pave the way, how can Saab not offer a 5-door 9-5?
Swade, I suggest, nay, demand that you ask the Saab movers and shakers about their planned response. Should be fun to hear!
Snippet Number Three:
Step on over to Autoblog for some great high-res images of the 9-5 from the Frankfurt show.
2010 9-5 wheel.jpg
Snippet Number Four:
The venerable Wall Street Journal published a few notes on Saab ownership from Bejing Auto’s point of view. The article, reproduced in entirety after the jump, contains some of the expected information (“leveraging strengths”, “provide know-how”, etc.), but also provides some insight that’s not been overtly stated until now.
For instance:

Mr. Wang said the strategic alliance would be modeled on the partnership between France’s Renault SA and Japan’s Nissan Motor Co.
Those companies have made substantial savings by sharing basic vehicle underpinnings and other technologies and combining forces in purchasing components, while keeping separate brands and corporate identities.

This begs the question: what’s in the BAIC parts bin for Saab? Does anyone really know?

IAA Gallery – the Saab stand

September 16, 2009 in Saabology

I referred to a guy named Olaf B in an earlier post.
Olaf’s a professional photographer here in Frankfurt and he’s just posted 200 photos on his website from his experience here at IAA today.
In a word, these are breathtaking. If you don’t take a look at this gallery today, you’re just not trying hard enough.
Many thanks to Olaf for the link, and congratulations on some brilliant work. I hope Saab Germany take some notice of these and hook you up on the next project because they are simply stunning.

Notes from Frankfurt IAA – day 1

September 16, 2009 in Saabology

Howdy all. What a day!
All the top brass at Saab and Koenigsegg were in attendance, including some representatives from Beijing Automotive. I got a chat with most and am hoping to catch the ones I didn’t speak to already, tomorrow.
Proper interview notes will be written in the coming days. For now, though, here’s a bunch of thoughts arising from various observations and conversations through the day.
——
In case you hadn’t seen them, the Saab Official Videos from today are available at their Youtube page.
Both are well worth a look.
And to add a touch of personal excitement, I got to meet The Man With The Incredibly Smooth Voice today. Charming chap wearing pink braces.
——
From what I can tell, the BAIC deal is going to be a total win-win-win for everybody concerned. Whispers say that when they talk about minority ownership of the Koenigsegg Group, we are talking around the less-than-25% mark.
For that, BAIC get access to Saab development in ensuing years, Koenigsegg and Saab get the finance they need to tie the deal up, but they also get another unexpected and rather large bonus.
Think of it this way – Koenigsegg’s business plan for Saab never included increased sales in China. Anything extra they get from China is just gravy on top of what they’d already planned for themselves.
But what are they going to make in China to take advantage of this, I hear you say? Well, there’d be a whole bunch of old 9-5 tools laying around when the new one comes online, won’t there?
——
Speaking of 9-5 tooling, word is the first truckloads arrived in Trollhattan last Friday.

Here’s the video!!

September 16, 2009 in Saabology

This is Jonas.
IMG_1963.JPG
He’s holding a USB drive in his hand, and on that USB drive is a video that contains 10 minutes of the press presentation and the reveal of the 2010 Saab 9-5.
Jonas is on his way to the computer to upload it on to YouTube. My mission was to get this photo up before the video.
Did I succeed? Who cares?!
The video will be available here.

2010 Saab 9-5 – You must see this vehicle

September 15, 2009 in Saabology

There’s a guy here at the Frankfurt show by the name of Olaf B. He’s a professional photographer, which is how he managed his press pass for today, but he’s also a Saab nut and a regular here at Saabs United.
About 10 minutes after the 2010 Saab 9-5 was revealed, Olaf came up to me and said “I can see why you tell people to wait until they see the car in the metal. It’s so much better.”
And so it is.
IMG_1916.JPG
Hopefully you may have all had a chance to view the reveal on video. If not, I’m sure they’ll get it up soon. Hopefully you’ve also had a chance to view the press materials that I linked to earlier.
These are great, but they’re more photos and this is one time when I can tell you that photos just do NOT do a car justice. i don’t have a designer’s vocabulary, so I’ll just tell it as I see it. The lines, angles and curves on this car are in all the right places. When they say it has some of the old Saab language in it, they aren’t kidding.
The rear deck has an instant reminder of a 2-door Saab 99. Approach the front from a certain angle and the windscreen really does curve away from you like Saabs of old.
This isn’t all about recreating a past, though. This is a brand new vehicle and I can tell you with one sitting not more than 10 feet away from me – this car, for this enthusiast, is a thing of beauty.
How does it compare to some of the thoughts and feelings we’ve had?
Well, it’s definitely big, but not overwhelmingly so. Sit in it and there is buckets of room but on the outside there is absolutely nothing that looks out of proportion. It’s going to look stellar on the road.
Then there’s some of the detailed touches. There are two different sets of wheels that will be available depending in specification. The Aero wheels are the ‘mild-turbines’ that we’ve already seen. The others are a two-tone wheel, showing here in a Vector model. They’re probably my favourites so far.
The door handles are another nice touch, finished in a two-tone scheme combining the paint color of the car and a titanium metallic finish. It looks very classy, much like the two-tone mirrors that are finished the same way.
Saab are showing two interiors here. One in black and the other in a Sand sort of color. The leather it good to the touch and the dash panel finish really does look as good as I’d hoped. The switchgear is all soft-feel plastic and metal finish, and the initial impression is that it feels really cohesive and well put together.
Some of the larger sections of plastic do look a little ‘garden variety’ but that’s possibly due to the rest of the details looking so good.
I really can’t say it enough. This is a vehicle that begs to be seen.
If you are within reasonable driving distance to Frankfurt in the next few days then you’ve GOT to come and see it. You will not be disappointed.
I just really feel so pleased and so happy for the company. They have worked so hard and most of it against rather incredible odds. Getting a chance to meet some of these people again and talk with them, you reealise how much this means to them as a company event. Much like someone who is ill, they’ve had to tick off various achievements in their road to getting well again. Those achievements are too numerous to mention here but you know them.
Today was a massive tick on Saab’s incredible list of achievements in 2009. The fact they’re here, presenting a new car at a massive worldwide motor show is an achievement of the highest order.
And I’m pleased to say that from what I’ve seen, the car lives up to the billing.

I’m off for another look.

2010 Saab 9-5 press materials now available

September 15, 2009 in Uncategorized

Just in case you hadn’t seen yet….
The press materials for the new Saab 9-5 are now online. There’s photos and video and I assume a bit more material about the car itself.
I’ve just grabbed one of the USB media kits that they have for the press here. There are only 400 for the entire press corps, so I’m fortunate to grab one early :-)
All the top brass are here, too. I just had an interesting chat with Simon Padian. On the question of a hatch in Saab’s future, the answer was “well, there’s more chance of that now than what there has been in the past”. I asked for a simple “yes” or “no” but I’ll take what I can get.
I just had a quick walk around the hall here. Saab’s stand is definitely the best stand in this particular hall. The curves, glass and light walls looks superb, as usual.
Opel are doing their presentation now as I write this. The fact that I’m here writing this to you should be an indicator……
Will check back in later.

Before the show…..

September 15, 2009 in Saabology

I’ve been at the Saab stand for about 45 minutes now.
I know some people warned me that there would be a lot of walking to do here, but I’ve got to say they didn’t do the words “a lot” any justice with that description. This place is freaking HUUUUGE!!!!
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that it’s too big, actually. You could fit almost the entire Detroit display into around three or four of the halls they have here in Frankfurt and they have ELEVEN halls plus outside displays. It’s just mind boggling.
Anyway, here’s a quick look around the Saab stand. In keeping with the show in general, it’s massive by normal Saab standards. That’s a good thing, though, as they’ve got lots to show.
The display may be altered during the course of the public show, but today they will have a 9-3 Convertible, a new 9-3x and four Saab 9-5s on display.

The stand is quite massive, with 9-3x’s flanking the central section, which is where the 9-5s will end up on display.
IMG_1898.JPG
IMG_1901.JPG
IMG_1903.JPG
At the edges on each side of the Saab stand there is a double garage, from which two Saab 9-5s will emerge during the presentation.
As 70% or so of Saab’s info about these cars has already come out to the media before the show, today is all about showing the cars off at their best.
IMG_1904.JPG
The other garage, fronted by some black and white beauties.
IMG_1905.JPG
Joe Oliver and Eric Geers discussing some last minute things, like which car that Aussie guy will drive in during the Saab presentation :-)
IMG_1906.JPG
And some goose making use of Saab’s media facilities. Very nice of them to provide somewhere nice to work….
IMG_1907.JPG
Saab had their kitchen and lounge open this morning. I enjoyed some delicious waffles over a quick chat with Eric Geers and Gunilla Gustavs.
Yes, this is the life!!
IMG_1908.JPG
Seeya all later on…..

Time for the show, I guess.
I don’t know why, but my palms are sweaty, the butterflies are going nuts, etc. I always get a bit of performance anxiety about these situations.
Nothing for it, I guess, but to get in there and start swinging.
Have a good day. I’ll be back in a little bit.

Sneek peek – 2010 Saab 9-5 at the IAA Frankfurt

September 15, 2009 in Saabology

Auto Motor and Sport seemed to have snuck in early and Saab left the covers off.
The photo was taken during a rehearsal for tomorrow’s launch.
Saab_Frankfurt_montern_test_big.jpg
The launch is in the early afternoon, Frankfurt time.
No need to rush here for photos or video. I will get them up as soon as I can, but we’ve all seen the car before and whlst it’ll be great to get images from the official launch here, there’s going to be a heck of a lot to cover in limited time.
It’s getting exciting now. I’ve had 4 hours sleep in the last 40 and I still feel like a kid at Christmas!!!
Thanks to Rodmylon!

The cars of Frankfurt ……….Airport

September 15, 2009 in Troll Stuff

With a post title like that you’d think I hung around the airport taking film of cars going past. Well, I did actually.
But that’s not what this post is about.
This is about the different cars that are actually installed inside the airport. I’m not sure if it’s IAA fever or whether there’s always this many, but I was surprised to see so many as I tootled around today.
This Maserati is on display as part of a competition they’re running at the airport.
IMG_1886.JPG

This installation is meant to show
a) the BMW 1 series with a new rock bottom price
b) the BMW 1 series is a safe vehicle in the event of an explosion
c) cars get dirty when you don’t wash them.
IMG_1887.JPG
There was another BMW over at Terminal 2, but I didn’t have my camera with me. For those who might be wondering if just wandered around the airport all day, well I kind of did. But I was at T2 for a reason. Unbelievable as it may seem, my in-laws actually arrived in Frankfurt from Vancouver for their Euro driving holiday on the same day I arrived for the IAA.

The Astra must have been comandeered for use at the IAA. Time are tough.
IMG_1888.JPG

The RUF Porsche plugin car. Looks great, as most Porsches do. But the electric thing’s just not doing it for me.
IMG_1889.JPG

Much like Mini are prone to doing, Fiat are using eye-catching schemes to promote their 500C. Pity if people don’t look up, though.
IMG_1890.JPG

This Jaguar E-Type is the vehicle on the promotional poster for the competition at the airport. No need to say why.
IMG_1892.JPG

Back to Porsches. There’s nothing quite like a place that’s willing to charge you triple price simply for the presence of seven letters to make one feel wealthy.
IMG_1894.JPG

And, yeah, there was a Kia.

Saab 9S by Niklas Palm

September 15, 2009 in Saabology

Our resident student-designer, Niklas Palm has been at it again.
Niklas is a Masters student at Umea Institute of Design. Every now and then he sends me something, I proceed to go nuts over it and then post it here.
This time it’s a small vehicle concept called a Saab 9S.

I see this car as a direct competitor to Alfa Romeo Mito, Mini Cooper S and other small performance cars.
It is just under 4 meters long and is a 2+2 seater with a real luggage compartment. Power could come from a small 1.2 liter turbo engine combined with an electric engine for extra boost and fuel economy.
It is a younger brother of the 900 Turbo S (SPG) from the late 80s, with the grey side skirts and the upright front windshield (I have a feeling that i have done a similar vehicle before, but this is exactly what Saab needs to boost sale and become a “premium” – whatever that means – car manufacturer.
I was ofcourse inspired by the 900 Turbos, but also the 99 and the classic 93.

saab02 copy.jpg
saab004 copy.jpg
saab 9S.jpg
——
And here’s a few links to Niklas’ previous work as featured here.
Audi IceKraft – ice raging machine that looks awesome.
Saab 9-1 that shares some similarities with the 9S, above. And again. You can see a real evolution there.
The UrMus – computer mouse inspired by UrSaab. I’d buy one of these tomorrow if they produced it.
Niklas’ Saab 9-4x sketches, which came several months before we saw the real thing.

Saab Pride – Anglo-Belgian edition

September 14, 2009 in Saabology

Thumbnail image for Saab PrideThis is a rather special Saab Pride entry as it’s from one of my fellow Saab bloggers – one of the guys I’ll have another opportunity to meet tomorrow, as a matter of fact.
Etienne runs the Saabhuy Blog from Belgium and I suspect he might have been at this blogging this at least as long as I have, if not longer.
Etienne’s been seen at many European Saab meetings in his classic Saab 900, but that might change in the future. I’ll let him explain why:
——
Some months ago, on 2nd of May to be precise, I took delivery of a Saab 99 from 1972 in the area of Bedford U.K. In fact, I bought it on ebay one month earlier.
This car was owned by the same man from new and I bought it from his grand-daughter.
It was repatriated to Belgium on a trailer via the tunnel. We fixed the clutch, brakes and carburettor and then all it needed was just a bit of polish and some alloy wheels, also found on ebay.
My first driving experience with this car was the international Saab meeting in Holland, but one of the main reasons I bought a Right hand drive Saab is simply because I like going to England so much and visiting this country. A few weekends ago, from 4th to 6th of September I attended the 20th anniversary meeting of the very friendly Saab enthusiasts club of Great-Britain in Larling, Norfolk.
After being many times in the UK with my LHD 900, I could say that I really enjoy the narrow roads of Norfolk with the steering wheel at the right place .
