A closer look at a Saab 9-5 police car

October 28, 2009 in Saabology

When I was touring around Trollhattan last month, one of my first stops was at ANA Specialbilar. There are two main facilities here, the recycling center (formerly SDCC) where they take cars to bits and then there’s the custom shop where they do a lot of special builds for various companies and agencies.
Alf and Martin were kind enough to give me a look through a Swedish Polis car. I’m such an exemplary citizen that my chances to see inside one the way some people to do are pretty limited :-)
The cars come to ANA like this – plain white Saab 9-5 wagons.
IMG_2060-1.JPG
And then the guys at ANA Specialbilar proceed to rip them to bits :-) Needless to say there’s a lot of custom stuff that gets installed in these cars so access to everything is necessary in order to do all the wiring.
IMG_2059-1.JPG
Speaking of wiring, how’s this for organisation?
IMG_2070-1.JPG
Each car has a trolley like this one that’s loaded up with all of the equipment that has to be installed or applied. Everything’s in there from the lighting, camera and radio equipment to the 90-or-so blue and yellow decals that get applied to each car.
IMG_2069-1.JPG
Here’s a look from the back of the car. You can see much of the wiring going into the back here.

Saab 9-5 at the Miami Auto Show

October 28, 2009 in Saabology

The new Saab 9-5 made its US debut in an understated manner last week at the South Florida Auto Show in Miami.
Our mate Wulf left the cool climes of Michigan and popped in to show and he was more than pleased to get his first look at this new Saab.
——
I snapped a few pictures at the Auto Show in Miami Beach last night. There is nothing new we haven’t seen before but it was nice to see the new 9-5 in the USA. The Saab stand was not grouped with the other GM brands this time. It was in between Porsche, BMW and Audi. Finally the right spot where they belong. Mercedes-Benz wasn’t at the show at all.
Unfortunately, they kept the car locked and didn’t let anyone sit in it. They opened it up for me but the only thing I was allowed to do was take a picture and enjoy the new car smell. The 2010 9-5 looks even more impressive in person than it does in pictures. They told me production was going to start in January and first deliveries in the US are going to be in June.
There was also a Saab 9-3X, a 9-3 Convertible, Sedan and SportCombi. There was no 2009 or 2010 (old-generation) Saab 9-5 which was a bit disappointing. While the new 9-5 was the star of the stand, the current 9-5 SportCombi is still going to be for sale for 2010 and is a car people can actually buy right now.
I was there on a Monday night and it was the quietest auto show I have been to. While it is not a main auto show, it compared in size to the show in Detroit. Perhaps just a bit smaller. But definitely a nicer location compared to downtown Detroit.

Here’s a few of Wulf’s excellent images. You can view the whole lot at his page on Flickr.

SVT to show Koenigsegg documentary this Sunday

October 28, 2009 in Saabology

Showing in Sweden on November 1st, at 8pm.
From SVT’s website via Googletrans:
——
koenigsegg360.jpg Christian von Koenigsegg is the man who with his own hands, has built the world’s most extreme sports cars and managed to make a business from a small factory in Ängelholm. But who is this controversial entrepreneur?
The film is based on unique material recorded for 15 years, from when Christian von Koenigsegg was in overalls with the grinder, making his first prototype, up to the present – to the exciting game of Saab.
The issue has been extraordinary since the current is clear that he was frontman for the newly formed Koenigsegg Group is about to buy the car manufacturer Saab.
In the movie about Koenigsegg we learn more about Christian and his path to success, a path which has not always been spikrak (?). His projects have always been marked by a lack of money and an environment which has been more skeptical than enthusiastic. Christian himself says that he has now become a master at overcoming adversity.
- After all crises, that’s when I lean back and enjoy the situation,” he says in the film.
On the way to success, Christian von Koenigsegg himself pushed really hard and also their employees. The film tells about the work of the Koenigsegg as a lifestyle more than a regular job.
Documentary Fonts Karin C Falck and Loui Bernal has complied with Christian von Koenigsegg since 1995. Directed and written by Malcolm Dixelius.

Am I flippin’ out? Saab should send a Turbo X to race Bob Lutz

October 28, 2009 in Saabology

UPDATE below
——
OK, this is a little reckless and stupid. It’s a mission to nowhere, but I can’t help but think it’s a good idea.
Bob Lutz – the guy who pretty much single-handedly killed Saab’s product range at the start of this decade – got on his high horse about the Cadillac CTS-V and dared anyone to come race him. He’d be at the wheel of the Caddy and his carefully selected opponents would run what they brung.
500x_locat_4.jpg Jalopnik are one of those carefully selected opponents and they were scheduled to show up in a Jaguar XFR, but the people at Jaguar have orchestrated a public relations disaster by pulling the big cat out of the event.
Jalopnik are now looking for a new car to take out Maximum Bob and I reckon SaabUSA should call in one of the unsold Turbo X’s and hand it over. If Jalopnik can’t get a factory car from someone then they’ll probably just run the Mitsubishi Evo that they’ll drive to the event in.
The CTS-V has a stonking big LSV supercharged V8 putting out 566hp and the Saab Turbo X puts out 280hp from it’s V6. I reckon Bob’s ego would allow for Saab to throw in a Hirsch tune for the Turbo-X, which would lift its performance a little bit higher (albeit without the needed hardware) to 300hp and 430Nm.
Now those cars would still be a long way apart on paper, but if the track and more importantly, the weather, suited the Saab then it could be closer than you think. If the track had enough corners to suit the XWD system and was at least mildly moist then I think Saab would get maximum props just for turning up when others feared to walk through the door to face Maximum Putz.
This is basically a big show of bravado on Bob’s part. The Saab wouldn’t win and wouldn’t be expected to win but even if the X managed to stay on the track and be mildly competitive then it’d be backslaps all round.
For those who think it’d be an absolute slaughter, I’d like to remind you of the track session SaabUSA held a few years ago, pitting the Turbo X against an Audi S4, a BMW 335xi, a WRX STi and BMW M3.
The Saab was 4 seconds behind the M3 and the STi in the dry, but was bested only by the STi and only by one-tenth of a second when the track was dampened.
What have they got to lose?
The event is only 2 days away now, so it’s probably not even a remote possibility. But I would really love to see Saab step up to that plate and just be part of it. They’ve got a habit of being able to do things people think they shouldn’t be able to do.
Shoving one of his own discarded cars up Bob Lutz’s clacker fits the bill if you ask me.
——
UPDATE
Here’s a format I’d like to see…..
Saab could bring a Hirsched Turbo X to the party but the party is now held over two stages to see which car is more versatile.
5 laps on the track, as they’re doing now.
PLUS
5 laps on a dirt rally circuit.
Aggregate time wins.

UPDATE II
Seth Hosko explains my thoughts better than I do in this video on his branding blog.
Good stuff.

Saab score high on Consumer Reports reliability rankings

October 28, 2009 in News

UPDATE below
——
I can’t believe my eyes!!
A news release today from Consumer Reports ranks Saab at #11 for predicted 2010 model year vehicle reliability.

  1. Scion
  2. Honda
  3. Toyota
  4. Infiniti
  5. Acura
  6. Mitsubishi
  7. Lexus
  8. Hyundai
  9. Porsche
  10. Mercury
  11. Saab
  12. Subaru
  13. Suzuki
  14. Kia
  15. Mazda
  16. Ford
  17. Nissan
  18. Volvo
  19. Buick
  20. Lincoln
  21. Volkswagen
  22. Pontiac
  23. Mercedes-Benz
  24. Audi
  25. Chevrolet
  26. BMW
  27. Mini
  28. GMC
  29. Saturn
  30. Jeep
  31. Dodge
  32. Cadillac
  33. Chrysler

I’m not sure what the etiequette is in this situation. I’ve spent a lot of time deriding CR’s methodology in the past and I stand by that 100%. I guess it would be somewhat duplicitous of me to get too excited about this.
I’m please to see the improved result, however, if only because it helps remove some of those negative GM stereotypes that Saab would like to shuffle off before proceeding down their own path in the United States.
Of course, it’s interesting to see that two of the brands GM is discarding are placed higher than any of the brands they’re keeping. Interesting too, is the not-unusual domination by Asian carmakers in the top 10.
Congratulations, Saab!
Thanks to Seth for the heads-up
——
UPDATE:
Saab jumped 12 places in this study.
The big loser was Mini, falling 14 places, with Lincoln down 9 spots and Subaru down 5.

A little milestone…..

October 28, 2009 in Troll Stuff

This box greeted me upon logging in to SU’s back-end software this morning:
25000comments.JPG
Trollhattan Saab ran for almost 4 years and attracted 51,000 comments in that time.
Saabs United has been running for less than 12 months and we’ve passed the 25,000 comments mark already.
Woohoo!
——
Further investigation shows that this 25,000 figure is actually just comments on my entries. Including comments to Eggs’ entries here, we’re at 25,744 comments in total so this post is actually a little late.
But hey……

Projekt Trifuel – BioGas Saab unveiled

October 28, 2009 in News

SaabBioGas.JPG Saab have shown their BioGas model at a conference in Gothenburg today. Both TTELA and Auto Motor and Sport are reporting on the vehicle.
The vehicle loses around 9cms of luggage space in the rear in order to hold 100 litres of BioGas in its tanks. That much gas will take you around “20 mil” which is Swede-speak for 200 kilometers, IIRC. Plans are afoot to get that range up to 30 mil “but we have not reached that yet” according to Saab Powertrain’s Kenth Johansson.
There is no confirmation yet that this model will get the green light. The infrastructure for BioGas is still pretty limited. There are plans for around 70 BioGas filling stations in Sweden by 2012, so this isn’t a widespread solution. If it does go ahead, it’ll most likely be a Sweden-only model at first.
As it’s a demonstrator model only, there’s no idea at this point as to the cost of the conversion, but reports from a few days ago suggest it will be done at ANA rather than at the factory.

CAR Magazine interview Christian von Koenigsegg

October 27, 2009 in Saabology

CAR Magazine have published an interview with CVK today where he talks about all things Saab.
If you’re up to date on all the news here, then I don’t think you’ll find much in this interview that we haven’t previously heard from CVK or the news stories.
Still, it’s good to see all this information in the one place. It’s also good to see CVK out there talking about Saab and the plans they have for it. It inspires more confidence than the silences we’re used to.
Some snippets……
Ambition:

I want to create a viable Swedish car company. Most commentators in the media say that there is little chance, because Saab has never made money. It is a fairly simple analysis. If you based all business decisions on what has happened before and expected that it would be exactly the same in the future, then there would be no way to change anything. Ever. We see it in a slightly different way

Jan-Ake Jonsson:

He is a rock that manages to stand up no matter how strong the wind is blowing. He stands up for Saab’s tradition and creates a good balance in our future management plans

Future Cars:

A specific electric car, a 9-3, the 9-5 and at least one car smaller than the 9-3. Perhaps something like a Mini Cooper with a premium. We could even launch a Sonnet sports car, but we really need everything else fixed before we can indulge ourselves in that sort of opportunity.

Olaf upgrades – Saab 9-5

October 27, 2009 in Saabology

Back in Frankfurt (was it just last month????) I met Olaf B.
You might recall Olaf’s work because he’s a professional photographer and he took some amazing images of the Saab stand at the IAA in Frankfurt.
Saab stand at Frankfurt
Olaf’s just updated me on the state of his garage, which has recently been blessed with the presence of a new Saab 9-5.
OlafSaab9-5.jpg
OlafSaab9-5-2.jpg
So what does he think of it?

I ask you and all the others: How old is this Design?
12 Years?
It’s timeless!
It’s a brand new 9-5 Griffin TID Hirsch, delivered from Saab Zentrum Frankfurt.

And it’s featuring some very nice new Incas, as well.
Congratulations to Olaf, and maybe this is a hint for ‘Me’ in his dilemma :-)

Help ‘Me’!

October 27, 2009 in Saabology

If you’ve been hanging around here for a little while now, you’re probably familiar with a reader/commenter named ‘Me’.
I know, it’s a little confusing. Everytime I write something credited to ‘Me’ I figure you’re going to think I’ve gone a little nutty. Anyway…..
‘Me’ has one of those delightful dilemmas on his plate and he’d like some help. I’ve given my thoughts privately via email, but we thought we’d open things up to get the opinions of others, too.
——
From ‘Me’

Hi Swade,
I need some advice, at least an opinion about it.
I can have a company car, and I can choose whatever car I want (there is a leasing quote maximum), so I am looking for a SAAB (what else?).
These are my 4 options. All four are Red and SC, and I have chosen cars with similar prices.

  • 9-5 SC 2.3t M5 (185bhp) Vector Griffin Edition (lots of bells and whistles)
  • 9-5 SC 1.9 TiD M5 (150bhp) Vector Griffin Edition (lots of bells and whistles)
  • 9-3 SC 2.0T M6 (210bhp) Vector (less whistles more power)
  • 9-3 SC 1.9TTiD M6 (180bhp) Vector (less whistles more power)

20099-5SCred.JPG
20099-3SCred.JPG
Which one would you choose? (a 99T was not an option ;-) )

And from ….er ……me. As in Swade, the real me as I sit here writing this:

Tough choice, but one that you can’t really go wrong with.
Personally, I’d say goodbye to the outgoing 9-5 by getting the 2.3t. You get a great Saaby engine and all the bells and whistles. Sounds like a good combination to me.
If looks are a priority, then maybe the 9-3 2.0T. Personally I think the 9-3 looks better in red than the 9-5. But if such superficial things aren’t important to you then I’d go for the 9-5.
Just my opinion, though.

Your thoughts?
Comments are open so please enlighten ‘Me’ – and me – with your pearls of wisdom.

Lego Saab 900

October 27, 2009 in Saabology

I was a big Lego fan when I was a kid, but Lego was pretty basic back then. I know a lot of people kept an interest in what was once just a child’s today and the addition of all sorts of electronics and custom parts means that Lego has grown up along with many of its users.
By the looks of these images, it might just be that there’s even some Lego prototyping software out there!
This model doesn’t seem to make use of any of those sophisticated motors and etc, but I could well see someone putting together a Saab from Lego that moves, steers and maybe even boosts!
From Flickr:

So, anyone ever tried this? Have photographic evidence? Send it on in.

Classifieds @ Saabs United?

October 27, 2009 in Troll Stuff

Before I write about this possible course of action, here’s some sage advice from The Auto Prophet. If you’re considering buying a new car in the next…..say…… 50 years, then read this first.
——
Now……
I’ve occasionally written about cars for sale as part of my content here on SU. In 99% of cases, it’s because the car in question has some sort of curiosity value and the fact that it’s become available for sale is what’s brought it to someone’s attention. They see it, they write to me and I write about it here on site.
Emails like the one below don’t happen frequently, but often enough for me to wonder if it’s worth making efforts to take some action.

I got an email a few days ago from a reader who’s looking to offload his Saab Turbo X prior to his lease expiring. He’s looking for someone to take over the remaining lease payments, which he will part subsidise so that they’re capped at US$450 a month (based on 1,000 miles/m).
The car is in Philadelphia and the last lease payment will be in July next year.
If you’re interested in a short term Turbo X lease and that structure suits your needs and budget then let me know and I’ll put the two of you in touch. It’ll be up to you to ask all the right questions and it’ll be up to Ken to provide full answers, but at least I can put you in contact.

Whilst I’m interested in helping Saab sellers and buyers connect, this is not the normal sort of thing that should be featured on the Saabs United website.
So….. would people be interested in surfing/using a separate but related site, publishing posts about Saabs and maybe Saab parts/accessories for sale? Posts would be categorised so that you could look up models, model year, country, etc. A weekly summary could be posted here on Sundays telling of new vehicles added during the week.
If you’re a dealer, would you find this service to be of value?
I’d propose that a small charge would be levied for each ad, which would stay online but be amended once the car was sold.
Thoughts?
As a web surfer looking at a Saab Classified advertisement, what would you like to see? Is there anything different that can be done to make the ads more relevant?

My 2 cents on the proposed Koenigsegg business plan for Saab

October 26, 2009 in Editorial

I guess I better start this by revisiting the basics of the plan that Dagens Industri claim to have got a copy of.

The 3 phases for Saab:
2010-2011: present phase

  • 115.000 cars sold gives break-even financially
  • Average price per car: 189.000 SEK

2012-2015: transformation phase

  • 80.000 sold cars gives break-even financially
  • Average price per car: 208.000 SEK
  • New models including a 9-5 Koeningsegg Edition

2016 – : premium phase

  • 65.000 sold cars gives break-even financially
  • Average price per car: 280.000 SEK
  • New models including a New 900

NOTE: A note on the monetary amounts mentioned here.
This comment was from ‘R’ in the original article. ‘R’ is a Saab dealer.

The prices mentioned are ex SAAB and therefore need to be increased by 1.4 plus country taxes to find the retail customer price. Thus the retail prices will be cost ex SAAB plus 55% to 60%

Hopefully that gives you a better idea as to what those figures mean.
——
I’ll be honest with you….
My first thought after reading this was to wonder if I can afford to be a Saab enthusiast any more. I was hoping to buy my first ever brand new Saab in about four or five years from now but with these plans, it looks like I’ll be a second-hand buyer for the rest of my life.
But as long as they build cars in the Saab tradition, that’s fine. There’ll be enough new buyers out there for them not to need my money. I hope.
Getting beyond my own circumstances, I guess I would say that my own reactions were mixed.
The excited
With this deal on the verge of being done, who can’t get excited to finally see some flesh on the bones of what we’ve been reading about the last few months?
GM chose to sell Saab just at the time when they had a bunch of new models about to come online. Realistically speaking, Koenigsegg couldn’t have got a better situation if they’d have scripted it themselves. GM pour the resources in (finally) just when they’re about to give it away.
The move to a more premium sector is exciting, as well. It means even better cars with even better materials – albeit at what will probably be higher prices. I have a feeling the prices won’t need to rise that much on current models, though. What we should really see is a slight price rise with a reduction of the incentives offered for purchase.
Of course, the things one should get most excited about are the cars. A Koenigsegg-Edition Saab 9-5? Woohaa!
And having we all been asking for a new car that really does follow in the very long shadow cast by the Classic Saab 900? Could they really do it?

The skeptical
The snag in this plan for me is the timeframe. I don’t know how 189,000SEK per car (for 2010 and 2011) on a wholesale basis compares with what they’re currently making. I assume it’s a raise.
The plan says that they need to sell 115,000 cars per year in these two years, at that price, in order to break even. Now it was only 2 years ago that Saab sold around 125,000 cars in a year but that was then, this is now (thankyou S.E Hinton). Saab have since sold 93,000 vehicles in 2008 and will likely sell something in the order of 45,000 vehicles in 2009 – if they’re lucky.

Saab 9-4x still getting tested

October 26, 2009 in News

Autoweek.nl have just published photos – recently snapped – of the Saab 9-4x getting trailered somewhere for testing.
Many have noticed that it’s been quiet on the 9-4x front lately. Hopefully these couple of photos are an indication that things are indeed still in motion with the Saab 9-4x.
AWNL-Saab9-4x2.jpg
There are a few more photos at the link, above.
When i asked the Saab people at Frankfurt about it, they mentioned that it is still all-systems-go for this vehicle. The reason for the quietness is because there’s nothing new to see or to talk about. We’ve seen the concept, which is basically very similar to the production vehicle, and we know it’ll be part of the four-cars-in-18-months timetable.

Saab BioGas conversions coming

October 26, 2009 in News

I need to check into some details on this, but it’s certainly an interesting development that we should hear more about this week.

From Auto Motor and Sport, with a translation thanks to Frank!

——

Saab will show a new 9-3 for biogas

Tuesday the 27th, a new Saab model will be unveiled in Gothenburg and it can be run on three fuels: gasoline, E85 and biogas.

So far we know no more than having the invitation to the premiere show, which will take place on Tuesday 27th October. The display is made in connection with an EU meeting in Gothenburg, where policy makers are gathered under the heading “Future Road Transport – safe and clean.”

In parallel with seminars and conferences for the heights in Europe to the dealer ANA Trollhättan show off a new Saab 9-3 1,8 t BioPower, which also will run on biogas. The car is a result of the project “Trifuel”, which of course refers to the car can run on the three fuels, gasoline, E85 and biogas. The project was coordinated by Innovatum Teknikpark with GM Powertrain Sweden AB, AVL and BRC Sweden AB.

The conversion to run on biogas will be made by ANA Trollhättan and Saab may thus have a competitor to Volvo V70 2.5 FT Bi Fuel and the Volkswagen Passat bestseller Ecofuel.

For company car drivers, gas-fueled cars that can run on biogas are especially interesting when you get 40 percent discount on the benefit value (not more than 16,000 per year). The rapidly growing interest in gas-fueled cars have put heavy pressure on supplies to the as yet relatively few gasmack services.

Biogas is methane gas extracted from organic waste and it is a very environmentally beneficial vehicle fuel that is carbon neutral. Methane gas is extracted as a byproduct of crude oil and natural gas is then called. The amount of biogas and natural gas can vary from filling stations.

——

AMS also have a picture of a Volvo V70 converted to run on BioGas. The tanks are stored in an under-floor compartment so that the space loss is minimal.

VolvoV70_gas_bagage.jpg

Here in Australia we have a lot of cars that run on Liquid Petroleum Gas. Being a gas-newbie I’m unsure if this is a different product, or a different name for the same product (it’s a different product – SW).

Anyway, Australian LPG installations often involve a single large tank in the trunk, which does cause a loss of luggage space. I think they’re getting better at it in more modern cars, though (admittedly, I haven’t looked at an LPG car for a long time).

As AMS say in their article, it’ll be interesting to see how they solve the tank issue.

We’ll watch with interest as this is another good positive development for Saab.
