Saab Apeldoorn still going strong

November 19, 2009 in Saabology

Back in April I was contacted by a guy named Ruud Blokhius, who wanted to let me know that in the midst of all the turmoil that Saab were going through – both corporately and in the Netherlands in particular – he was about to open a new Saab dealership.
Talk about courage!
We’ve had an update from Ruud since then, but I’ve received a comprehensive one from him, which I’ve reproduced below.
This is the Saab Spirit put to action. More power to Saab Apeldoorn!!
——
Saab Apeldoorn still going strong
In November 2008 the Saab dealership at Apeldoorn closed because the dealer went bankrupt. On the first day of April 2009, Fernand and I restarted the Saab-dealership at Apeldoorn.
As you know this restart had to be made under bad economic circumstances. Kroymans Corporation and the Saab distributor both went bankrupt and Saab Sweden had to find a new owner. As a result of all this the sales of new cars collapsed and there were some major problems to be solved: how to get new Saabs and original Saab parts and how to give (under these circumstances) good service to your customers. However, we had a strong belief that all the problems would be solved.
P1010616.jpg
P1010617.jpg
The most important purpose was to re-win the trust of our customers and rebuild a stable relationship with them. There was a major effort necessary for this, but we did a good job and succeeded. The customers came back for the after-sales, and the sales of new and used cars increased smoothly.
The start of our company was 6 months ago, We are proud to tell you that Saab Apeldoorn is still going strong. We have a good team of six hard working people and satisfied customers. We can give our customers the full Saab support they want once again. We deliver new cars, used cars, Saab warranty, Saab service and original Saab-parts.
Our Saab service is continuously fully employed for the next two weeks. Sales are increasing smoothly, especially the sales of young (used) cars. We can feel that the opinion about Saab is far more positive than some months ago. There is a new owner of Saab Sweden and a new Saab 9-5 coming soon. The customers who saw the new Saab 9-5 at Rotterdam were very positive. We can’t wait to have this great new Saab in our showroom.
Resuming we can conclude that our dream has come through. There has been made a good start in the first half year of Saab Apeldoorn and we have a strong belief in the future of Saab Automobile, Saab Netherlands and Saab Apeldoorn.
Next week we will tell you some more great news from the Netherlands!! Stay tuned.
Greetings,
Ruud Blokhuis and Fernand Andringa.

The potentially crazy and totally subjective case of Saab in San Diego

November 19, 2009 in Saabology

“Non-subjective means” were apparently used to select the 137 Saab dealers that will remain with Saab in the United States after November 30. Consider this a case where a little bit of subjectivity may have helped.
This is a G-map of southern California. The focus here is on San Diego, which by all accounts is a very nice place to lay your hat and a good place to own a Saab convertible. IIRC, Saab USA did their 60th Anniversary gig there back in 2007.
SthCali.JPG
The “A” you see on that map, in San Diego itself, is Marvin K Brown Saab. ‘Ying’ made some enquiries as to whether they were one of the dealerships selected to stay on and the advice provided to him was that they are “hopeful” and that they had not been contacted officially either way as yet.
The mail must be extremely slow in San Diego.
Assuming positive news is coming their way (and I sincerely hope it does, eventually) then San Diego will retain a Saab dealership.
If, as I suspect, they received negative news and just don’t want it disclosed as yet, which is their decision and fine with me, then the nearest Saab dealership to San Diego is Continental Motors (F), located 32 miles away at Oceanside. After that, it’s another 56 miles (78 in total) to Saab of Santa Ana (not marked).
This post is primarily about Continental Motors. As I wrote the other day, there are some dealerships with a rich a deep connection to Saab and a rich history. Continental are one of these. Ziggy Galleisky, the owner of Contental Motors was kind enough to chime in via comments with a little backstory about his dealership:

Well, I’m much like Brewers. We’ve been a dedicated Saab dealer for 41 years here on the west coast…… The oldest dealer west of the Mississippi.
Saab is the only thing we do, we treat our customers well and their loyalty in itself proves it. Although some work or live near another store they won’t go there because of feeling unimportant.
The way I see it now my customers will be required to drive and hour or more to reach the next store, longer if its during rush hour drives, which typically is when customers take their cars to service. Considering we’re not in a rural area but more a semi-metropolitan populated area, for Saab to think they will improve customer base by spreading the dealers so far apart is unfathomable. It’s more likely to have the reverse affect.

I’ve read plenty of people in comments lamenting the demise of Continental Motors. They all had great things to say about their customer service and the fact that they felt good going there. Considering its proximity to San Diego and the fact that the future of Marvin K Brown Saab is unknown – not to mention that you don’t shaft good, loyal people – it seems ludicrous to me that they’d be on the cut list.
Ziggy said in comments that he’ll be appealing this decision and I sincerely hope that some common sense prevails here, as with some of the other long-established Saab dealers in other locations.
SCNA – ask yourself this….. What would Bob Sinclair do?
——
To all those who think it’s only about big new shiny buildings…….. the car industry, as far as I can tell, is all about two things.
If I can channel Peter De Lorenzo for a moment, the car industry was, is and always will be about the product. That’s #1.
Then you’ve got customer service. The link between the product and the consumer.
Customer service isn’t provided by a big shiny building. It’s provided by people. Dealers like Continental, Brewers and Kunkle might have older buildings and smaller numbers, but the incremental cost to Saab of supplying these high-satisfaction dealerships would be negligible and all you get by cutting them is dissatisfied loyalists and lost sales.
——
Disclosure – I’ve got no links with any of the dealerships mentioned in this post. I just think it’s crazy.

SCNA publish Questions and Answers

November 19, 2009 in News

The following Q&A from the SaabUSA website addresses some of the important issues going through people’s minds right now.
Interesting on the servicing questions, too…..
——
Q: What is happening with the sale of Saab?
A: Great progress has been made toward securing financing to complete the purchase of the brand. Recently, the European Investment Bank approved Saab Automobile AB’s loan application for 400 million Euros, roughly $600 million USD. Saab is in the final stages of negotiations with Sweden’s National Debt Office and we expect confirmation from the European Commission that Sweden’s state guarantee conforms with EU rules on state aid. It is a complicated process; however, we remain extremely confident that our plans are on track to close the deal in the 4th quarter of this year.
Q: Are there any immediate changes for Saab owners/customers?
A: No. From a consumer standpoint, Saab’s business continues largely as it was before.
SERVICE AND WARRANTY
Q: I’ve heard that Saab will be under new ownership. What happens to my Saab vehicle warranty and no-charge scheduled maintenance?
A: Saab vehicle coverage will be unchanged. Saab vehicles will continue to be covered by current warranty and service plans, and customers should continue to have their vehicles serviced at Saab dealerships.
Q: If the dealer I used to go to is no longer in operation, where should I go for service?
A: The Dealer Locate feature on saabusa.com will help you locate the nearest authorized service locations. You can also contact the Saab Customer Assistance Center at 800-955-9007 for guidance.
Q: If my dealer is no longer in operation and the next closest Saab dealer is farther away, where should I go for service?
A: If your vehicle requires normal scheduled maintenance or warranty repairs, the Dealer Locate feature on saabusa.com will help you locate the nearest authorized service locations. If your vehicle cannot be driven, call Roadside Assistance at 800-852-9001.
Q: If my dealer is no longer in operation, can I take my Saab to a GM dealer for scheduled maintenance and warranty service?
A: No. If your vehicle requires normal scheduled maintenance or warranty repairs, the Dealer Locate feature on saabusa.com will help you locate the nearest authorized service location. If your vehicle cannot be driven, call Roadside Assistance at 800-852-9001.
Q: Is Saab considering creating new service-only points?
A: Yes, Saab is currently exploring ways to make the ownership process as convenient as possible for current and future Saab owners. Strategically located authorized providers who deliver only warranty and maintenance services are one of the ideas being investigated.
Q: Will parts and accessories continue to be available for my Saab product?
A: Yes, genuine Saab parts and accessories will continue to be available.

2010 IIHS Top Safety Picks released – Saab not amongst them

November 19, 2009 in News

Safety has always been a top priority at Saab, even before they were the first manufacturer to fit safety belts as standard items on a vehicle.
I’m not 100% on this, but I believe the Saab 9-3 has been an IIHS Top Safety Pick ever since its release. There was a time when Saab was a safety leader, but as happens, others catch up.
Last year there were 94 cars that were awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick. So like the people at EuroNCAP, the IIHS people decided to change the test and make it tougher. As a result, there were only 27 cars awarded the Top Safety Pick this year.
The new test included rollover protection for the first time.

ARLINGTON, VA – Nineteen cars and 8 SUVs earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2010 For the first time, good performance in a roof strength test to measure protection in a rollover is required to win. TOP SAFETY PICK recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rear, and now rollover crashes based on good ratings in Institute tests.

It should be noted that the Saab 9-3 was not tested for the 2010 results in terms of rollover protection. The lack of a Top Safety Pick award, therefore, should not lead to the conclusion that the 2010 model Saab 9-3 would not have been eligible.
Other former Top Safety Pick winning companies that missed out this year included BMW, Mazda and Mitsubishi.
——
This brings up an interesting conundrum.
Saab, like any other company, would want to retain TSP and EuroNCAP 5-star status. Subaru are going to have yet another feather in their recently enlarged cap by gaining TSP status in all categories for which they were eligible. They were the only manufacturer to do so.
Real world crash statistics show that Saabs are still amongst the safest cars on the road and I’m sure they will look at these new tests and do what they can to satisfy them.
But one has to wonder how far these tests will end up going. If they continue to be non-exclusive as they were last year (94 winners), will they then find something else to add, just to make themselves a target again.

Saab in the USA – Is your dealership staying?

November 18, 2009 in Saabology

RE-POSTED – I’m working on a full list of all 218 dealers so that I can reconcile and see how many we haven’t heard from, whether negative or positive. I’ll hopefully have that together in the next day or so.
Your efforts in respect of this task are greatly appreciated.
——
Saab Cars North America sent out yea/nay letters to dealers last week and the news services tell us that 81 dealers were not retained, with 137 dealers remaining to join the new Saab organisation when the deal is finalised.
The big question now is who are those dealers?
Saab Cars North America aren’t talking, so it’s up to us to see how many we can confirm on our own.
Perhaps you could call your local dealer and just ask them if they’re staying or going? Add your findings in comments and I’ll try and keep the list here up to date as we go along.

Saab distribution for Canada – details revealed

November 18, 2009 in News

We’ve been wondering about the situation in Canada for some time. It seems some concrete information has hit the news.
I’d expect this to be a template for other Saab markets outside of the US, Sweden and Great Britain. And I expect we might here similar announcements for other unresolved markets soon, too.

Saab, one of four brands being jettisoned or sold by General Motors Co., will continue in Canada under new ownership and a smaller dealer network, Canadian dealers say.
Saab Cars North America plans to hook up with distributor International Fleet Sales Inc. of San Leandro, Calif., to import Saab vehicles into Canada, said Chris Budd, who owns Budd’s Saturn Saab in Oakville, Ont.
“It’s going to be a pretty simple operation in Canada with a fairly small organization and we will leverage the U.S. operations for much of the hard-core stuff like marketing and advertising,” Mr. Budd said.
The network will consist of 12 to 14 dealerships in major metropolitan markets across the country, Mr. Budd said, with dealers operating standalone stores or linking with other existing franchises.

The full story is available over at the Globe and Mail, but those are the basics.
It’s really good to see a resolution to this situation, and one that won’t see the dealership base pared down too much from where it is right now. It’s still a small base, but it’s a start.
International Fleet Sales Inc are a vehicle export company that currently facilitate the sale of GM North American vehicles into overseas markets. As such, they should be familiar with GM’s systems, as are Canada’s Saab dealers. This should make for a smoother transition.
Hopefully my old mate Bill Convery in Vancouver’s still going to be spinning yarns to customers for some time to come.

Saab bring back another 90 workers, look to training

November 18, 2009 in News

The naysayers can continue their nays, but Saab are gearing up and preparing for life outside of GM ownership.
In line with expected increased production, Saab have just recalled another 90 employees, 80 of which will be employed on the factory floor. Saab had to lay off around 700 employees earlier this year, but this latest recall means that over 140 of those have returned to the company.

They start as early as next week, partly because they need to update itself (?) and partly because to some extent prepare for the production of the Saab 9-3 convertible, which is (coming) home to Trollhattan, “said Paul Åkerlund, chairman of the IF Metall in Saab.

TTELA report that Saab have also started to build new 9-5 test vehicles on the production line.
——
Saab are also looking at a training program for employees, seeking funding for the intitiative.
The training is considered necessary due to the separation from GM. Going alone means that Saab will no longer have access to some functions or support that GM used to provide.
The program could involve up to 4,000 people from Saab, Lear and ANA and would go for 2 years, starting in March 2010.

Wednesday Snippets – furniture edition

November 18, 2009 in Saabology

We are now two-thirds of the way through the Saab dealer listing for the future Saab Cars North America, with 93 down and 44 to go as at the time of writing.
I’m trying to put together a list of all 218 dealers so that I can figure who’s as-yet unaccounted for. I know there’s a good few in Colorado we’ve not counted yet, for example.
As always, your help on the ground there in the US is much appreciated, and thanks to all the dealers who have chimed in, as well.
——
FYI…
I’m quite sure that the decision on who to cut and who to keep has come from Koenigsegg/Saab, under advisement from Saab Cars North America. This isn’t a GM thing.

Mike Colleran, chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America, said that may be a possibility but it hasn’t been discussed by company officials. He said the decision not to bring all 218 dealerships on board if a sale is finalized was difficult but was the best one based on the company’s “business plan.”
“We wanted dealers that in the end can make money,” Colleran said. “We came out with the 137 stores that we needed.” He said non-subjective standards were used to determine which dealers would be asked to remain with Saab.

That’s from the story about Kunkle Saab.

Those of you looking for something Saaby to mark on your calendars…..
The Midnight Sun Rally will pass through Trollhattan on July 15 next year. The Saabs United Historic Rally Team will be there. Look for us up near the front of our class :-)
Robin M is already busy organising Swedish Day UK for next year, too. It’ll be on Sunday the 9th May.
——
Nick Taliaferro from GenuineSaab.com has a blog, just in case you didn’t know. You can get loads of hi-po information there.
Whilst decidedly not hi-po on this occasion, I did note that he’s been busy crafting some groovy Saab furniture :-)

I have a basketball trophy made in a similar manner. I was working for Deloitte at the time so we were nicknamed the Deloitte Pistons.
Anyone else got some Saab-inspired furnishings in their home?

Things looking very autumnal in New England. Thanks Sumit.

Saab get favourble look from EU, but still no decision

November 18, 2009 in News

One of the few remaining steps in Saab’s transition to new ownership is an opinion from the European Union on state aid. In short, government’s can’t give state aid to troubled companies and the EU has to decide if Swedish loan guarantees would amount to such a scenario.
Saab provided some paperwork to the boffins in Brussels some time ago, and KPMG were commissioned to go back in time and see if Saab were in trouble back in mid-2008, prior to the global financial crisis.
SVT.se, a Swedish news source, are reporting that this process has taken a favourable outcome. Cue the Googletrans:

Saab joined by three billion in losses last year, but in the 80-page dossier which the government recently sent to the European Commission shows that the company still able to EU rules.
The consultancy firm KPMG has been commissioned by the government through Saab’s accounts. Including the issue of access to capital, cash flow and sales. The report concluded that, Saab was not in a financial crisis last summer. General Motors had, inter alia, contributed to the capital in June.
Saab has also made their own documents show that the finances were in order.

That would seem to remove that particular obstacle.
Now we still have the obstacle of motivation i.e. getting the EU people to get off their chair long enough to send a fax saying everything’s OK.

A high price for Saab’s US security

November 17, 2009 in Editorial

We’ve been trying to compile a list of remaining Saab dealers. I’m pretty pleased that we have managed to get over the 50% mark, though I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard task to complete.
Let me put on record now my frustration at the new SaabUSA not being willing/able to provide a list of remaining dealers. What could possibly be wrong with letting your customers know where they’ll be able to purchase/service their cars in the future? It doesn’t need to be the final list, especially where service outlets are concerned, but some communication would be so welcome right now.
Whilst we’re talking service outlets, it appears that whilst there will be 137 dealers left, there will be likely be more that 137 outlets where authorised service can be provided. I’ve personally heard of one dealership that is likely losing sales authority but will be continuing to provide authorised service. That’ll be another list.
What I’d like to turn this site to for this post is the list of dealers who won’t be selling Saabs anymore. Some of them possibly won’t care about this fact too much. They’ve got big businesses that Saab was most likely a very small part of.
But there’s going to be a few on that list for whom Saab was everything. For many (if not all) of them Saab has been the center of a family business for several generations.
Losing these Saab dealers hurts.
You’ve possibly read the comments by Kevin Brewer and Ron Collins already. Here are some excerpts.
From Kevin Brewer at Brewer’s Saab:

We have been a exclusive Saab dealer for 41 years. We are a family owned and operated dealer that has been with Saab through thick and thin and this is how we are repaid. No notice, no nothing, we learned from an email of an Automotive news article that they were axing 81 dealers and the next day we get a letter saying we were not chosen to continue with the new company….no real reason. We will no longer be a Saab dealer effective November 30, 2009. That’s barely two weeks away!!!

See. That hurts.
Ron Collins, from Trio Motors in Michigan:

It is with much sadness to have to make this announcement. After being the oldest continuosly family owned SAAB dealer in the United States, with 51 years of service, SCNA has informed us that they are not renewing Trio Motors franchise agreement…… Trio Motors, like Brewster SAAB, is a small dealership with sales that average about 125 cars a year. After 51 years of service and dedication to SAAB, I think we at least deserve an explanation…… We have learned from experience, and input from our customers, that they would rather come to Trio Motors, where they are treated like people or family instead of going to the larger dealerships and be treated like a number. Personal attention is what the people like and they get that from the smaller home town dealers. Why would SCNA want to end that?

One guy we haven’t heard from is Tim Haddle from Kunkle Motors in Pennsylvania. They’ve been selling Saabs for 52 years and like Brewers and Trio, are now off the list.
——
Saabs are sold here in Hobart by a Holden dealership called Motors. Years ago, though, they were sold by a dealership called Kingsway, and they were an outstanding organisation.
Kingsway had an old-ish looking dealership in a great location and Hobart was a Saab town. There are still heaps of Saabs here and many of them old ones. The owners of Kingsway sold the business in the late 1990s. They got an offer that was most likely too good to refuse.
A big dealership group from northern Tasmania bought it, mainly for the real estate. They renovated the premises and filled it with Volkswagen Beetles, with Saabs stuck in the back corner. I visited there once and was charmed by a textbook salesman with stories about excellent Swiss engineering. I didn’t have the heart to tell him.
My mechanic, Steve E, was the lead mechanic at Kingsway. When he left them they had 1,100 service clients on their books. That’s pretty significant for a population of around 240,000 people. Steve moved on to a new place of business and took 1,000 of those clients with him.
The current sales group, Motors, have had some guys who have tried hard with Saab but a combination of limited product and exhausted faith by management has seen Saab once again tucked away. They’re now lost amongst a forest of Holdens and barely visible from the street.
——
If you go Trollhattan during Saab Festival, you get a good appreciation for how important history is to this brand. History might be the one major thing that separates the European (and many American) brands from the Japanese and Koreans.
For Saab, history shows how the little guy can win sometimes. How size doesn’t necessarily mean smarts. It shows how details, practicality and the ability to adapt built a customer loyalty that still baffles many in the automotive industry.
Time in the market means something to this brand. At least as far as I know it.
——
I understand that Saab needs a strong dealer base. They need dealers who are capable of making money, being happy and showing the brand off to its fullest potential. They need a scale that the new Saab can handle without many of the backoffice functions that GM have provided in the past.
Business is business. If you want to make an omelette, you’ve got to break a few eggs. I know that.
But guys like the ones mentioned above and others like them have carried the torch for Saab in the US for years. In some cases, generations. These people, just like the Saab 93, Sonett, 99 and 900 owners who crowd Trollhattan during a Festival….. these people are the fabric that makes up Saab’s history.
Some of them serve small communities. Saab can now count those communities as lost.
I don’t know what it costs Saab to keep a small dealership operational. I wish I knew more about the dealership industry. But these people are here to make money and if Saab are serious about the cars they’re bringing to market, surely these entrenched dealerships with loyal customer bases would be able to make money – for themselves and for Saab.
I’m not going to encourage you all to write to anyone, hold up signs or complain. I don’t know these people personally enough to do that and I think the people at Saab have got enough on their plate right now.
My enduring hope, however, is that Saab can reconsider some of these decisions and preserve some of these dealerships where the love of Saab cars still matters.
And at the very least I hope that Saab can support these shops by maintaining a wider spread of authorised service outlets. To cut of these people’s avenues for new car sales is one thing. To deliberately throw away decades of accumulated knowledge is another all together.
Toto…. I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.

Saab dealers running out of cars, Saab planning more

November 17, 2009 in News

Despite very poor sales this year, Saab dealers are running out of cars.
US dealers, in particular, are complaining of low stocks and long delays for orders.

“We have about 10 Saabs left, and they won’t last long,” Ivan Goodwin, sales manager at Jim Ellis Saab in Atlanta told Bloomberg News. “It’s going to be a big problem, but there is nothing we can do about it.”…….
……But the company says that as soon as the Koenigsegg deal is done and a EUR400m (US$600m) loan from the European Investment Bank comes through, it will start to ramp up production; it also says that it will start taking orders for the new 9-5 soon with US deliveries scheduled to start in the spring after the car has gone on sale in Sweden where dealers are also complaining about a lack of stock.
Lars Kopp, who runs a dealership in southwest Sweden, said Saab has extended delivery times, with the longest wait being eight weeks, as Saab’s “stretched liquidity” means the carmaker cannot produce enough cars. He has 20 vehicles in stock and orders for 50 more.

As hinted at in that article, Saab have plans to accommodate the shortfall, planning on a boost in production as soon as the calendar ticks over to the new year.
From TTELA:

- We will raise the rate from week 1, and then go from 13 cars per hour to 28 cars per hour, “says Paul Akerlund.
In volume terms, it means that 100 production cars per day in the current situation, will be approximately 220 per day by year end.
There is more in line with the demand looks like. Today’s extreme low production rate has created much longer waiting times for customers than is desirable.

This sale completion cannot come soon enough. The world is ticking along and Saab is running out of time to get things back to normal. The buyers will pass them by eventually.
Fingers crossed the EU can get a decision out soon and push this puppy along a little. Saab’s got plenty that’s ready to go. All they need is a green light to get going – soon.

Saab heading to court?

November 17, 2009 in News

Time to catch up on stories not related to dealerships and the US (tho we will return).

Saab may be heading off to court to fight an order stating that they must pay around 100 million SEK by mid-December.

At issue seems to be whether the full amount is due, or whether it should be written down under the terms of Saab’s composition arrangements, made whilst under court protection.

Saab does not accept the county administrative requirements. The company has projected that the entire pay security included in the composition and should be written down.

- It may be that we go to court to hear the question, “says Saab’s CIO Eric Geers told TT.

Throughout the six-month reorganization process, Saab and the state had different views on insolvency and recovery.

According to Eric Geers, the company has not decided exactly how to proceed.

- But we stick to the view that it is not right to remove a part of the guarantee and assess it in a different way than the other, “he says.

The County Board is as determined – that guarantee the first month is payment for work performed after the reconstruction started making it into a new debt. And new debt is not included in the agreement.

- It’s not a decision to appeal, but a requirement subject to the law, “says Christina Danielsson, head of the economics unit at the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland, to TT.

These things are never easy, are they?

Another rocky shelf to navigate for Saab’s chief legal eagle, Kristina Geers.

Monday Night Snippets – snickers edition

November 16, 2009 in Saabology

Don’t mean to focus on GM-follies, but does this strike you as rather strange when announcing a new model (the Chevrolet Spark)

A spark of life, a spark of intuition, an electric spark – in English Spark offers many energetic associations. “Short brand names are crisp, memorable and fit small products,” says Germany’s brand name research expert, Dr. Werner Steppat. “Whether the English word is understood in other markets or not, the name has a good ring,” says Steppat. “It is a youthful, crisp and modern name that – mainly through the vowel ‘a’ – conveys strength and character. It ends in a ‘k’ which offers a good “stopping function” which in turn makes it easier to remember,” Steppat adds.

I mean, if the name is commanding an entire paragraph then the car’s got to be lacking something, hasn’t it?

Today sees a new edition of Sniff Petrol.
Yay!!
I love the first story – letter ‘F’ latest to consider leaving F1. The usual language warnings apply.
——
I like the front view of this Saab 96. The back, not so much.

——
Koenigsegg Group’s Chinese investors, Beijing Automotive, have just announced the pending production of electric and hybrid vehicles.
Quite advanced, too, by the sounds of things:

The model, known as BE701, is capable of going as far as 200 kilometer per hour when fully charged, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h

Lost in translation?

Intellichoice credit Saab CPO program – again!

November 16, 2009 in News

A few years ago, we were all quite impressed when Intellichoice names Saab’s CPO program in the Top 10 of pre-owned vehicle programs in the US.
This year, they’ve placed a little better then the Top 10. Try being in the Top 2!!
Saab placed second after Volvo (who also won back in 2007) in the Luxury category of the Intellichoice awards. They also scored another award, noted below.
——
Luxury Brand
Overall Winner: Volvo
Best Warranty: Porsche
100% Inspection Score: Audi, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo
Strongest Brand Value: Saab
Rankings:
1. Volvo
2. Saab
3. Cadillac
4. Jaguar
5. Hummer, Audi, Lincoln (tie)
——
CPO programs have been all the more important this year as new car sales of all brands (except Hyundai and Subaru, perhaps) have plummeted. Used car prices have risen as a result, so to be able to offer greater value for the dollar by way of an excellent CPO program has likely been a great bonus.
Details about Saab’s CPO program in the US:

  • 6 years/100,000-Mile Certified Pre-Owned Limited warranty1
  • $0 Deductible
  • Fully Transferable (No charge)
  • 117-Point Inspection and Reconditioning process by our trained technicians
  • 24 Hour Roadside Assistance2
  • Courtesy Transportation3
  • A clean Vehicle History Report on every vehicle
  • 24 Hour Customer Assistance Hotline
  • OnStar® digitally-equipped vehicles are eligible for three trial months of OnStar4 Safe & Sound service plus 30 minutes of Hands-Free Calling5 good for two months
  • XM6 equipped vehicles come with three trial months7 of the XM Everything Package. Get over 170 channels, including commercial-free music plus the best sports, news, talk and entertainment

The big question, of course, is whether there’ll be a CPO program after Saab’s sale to Koenigsegg Group.

Call yourself hardcore? Not your average Saab collectors

November 16, 2009 in Saabology

This is Sibylla Gustafsson……

This is Sibylla with her partner, Lars Björk, and their 1961 Saab 96 stopping for coffee…..
SaabColl6.jpg
They look quite the quaint couple, wouldn’t you agree? They don’t look like your average gearheads or car collectors.
And yet these two are possibly one of the most hardcore collecting couples I’ve seen in 5 years of Saab blogging.
Sibylla admits becoming somewhat partial to Saabs when her father brought home their family’s first Saab many years ago and she got her own first Saab at age 16. Yes, she is the driving force behind this Saab collection, which is quite a formidable one.
In short, they own nine Saabs, ranging from a 1959 Saab 93 to a 1998 Saab 9000. The 9000 is Lars’ daily driver and Sibylla gets around in a much rarer Saab 90 from 1985. They also own two Saabo caravans, a shed full of spare parts and other collectibles – as well as somewhere north of 500 Saab and Scania scale models…..

Personally, I think they should open a museum.
I’ve seen some serious hardcore Saab owners in my time writing this blog, but I’m not sure I’ve seen too many collections of cars, both real and in scale, that can rival this one.
If you’re blessed with the ability to read Swedish, then you can check them out here. There’s also a brilliant slideshow featuring heaps more photos.
This is some of Saab’s real heart on show here.
My thanks to Fredrik for the link. Magnificent.
