Saab 9-5 roadshow in Hungary – part 2: dashboard video

by Swade on November 13, 2009

Z! is from Hungary and attended the Saab 9-5 roadshow recently.
Whilst in the car, he whipped out a camera and made a quick video of the 9-5 dashboard instruments in action.

In the video, you’ll see the instrument lighting, as well as seeing the SID cycle through some of it’s functions (it’s controlled by a scrollwheel on the steering wheel).
You’ll also see the HUD cycle through a few options as well.
The video is on Flickr and you can watch it here.
My thanks to Z! for posting it.

Wow. That looks great! Not sure how I feel about the turn signal beep. It is a nice tone, but I think I might prefer a wooden mallet tone. Maybe you can change it in all those menus?

Not much for the tone – I prefer the click click click…but that instrument is just wicked cool. Damm – that is just great. I want one for my Saab!

Definitely got night panel, Magz.

My father’s old Eagle Premier (American reworked Renault 25 for those outside the USA) made the same sort of sound for the directional alert. 23 years later, still a relevant feature apparently.

Very cool. I’ll take a wagon when available.
Though curious: redline appears to be 4.5K rpm…and rpm only go up to 6K – on the standard dashboard display? So this must be a diesel right? But then the windshield display appears to go to 7K rpm and beyond as seen in both the video and the screen shot above?
Not “complaining” per se, I’m thrilled about this car generally and specifically, just a little something subtle I noticed…doesn’t really bother me, but might bother some…

Hi Magnus,
to me the speedo looks asymmetrical.
If this is what you mean.

sorry, :-)
the dash is in a diesel,
the HUD is in a 2.0T biopower
(and the turn signal too)

Def going to miss the old turn signal sound. I wonder why they changed it? Everyone that rides in my 9-3SS notices the difference.

Does anyone find it a little much that you could possibly read your speed in three locations at one time? (Two locations in the dash and one in the HUD)

No worries :-) Very good, thanks.

Sorry folks, but the new turn signal is on the verge of being a deal breaker. It sounds like a warning signal to me. I agree with spazzz2002, will miss the old signal. But to be fair, that had to be changed. But they could have come up with something a lot better.
Other than that, I’m very much looking forward to trying out the new 9-5. Hopefully it will be in the showrooms early in the new year :)

It seems really cool. Who knows how many people may buy the car based on this feature alone. It may sound silly but back when I was younger I bought my first saab 900 based on this;
My wife: “why did you pick the saab?”
Me: “Because I could get one of those cool black wings on the back..the key in the middle was cool
too”
Me:”Why did you choose the volvo?”
Wife: “The Saab dealer was closed that day”
Seriously if they put the HUD in the all saab models there are people that will buy.
