An open letter to Ed Whitacre, CEO of General Motors

December 29, 2009 in Editorial

Hi Mr Whitacre.
I know we Saab fans have probably been a pain in the behind for the last week or so. In a normal world, this wouldn’t have happened but we don’t live in a normal world right now. We’re enthusiasts. The fate of our favourite car is in your company’s hands. In many ways it’s in your hands. So I apologise for the inconvenience but, well, needs must.
You probably didn’t read, may not have even seen, all those emails in your inbox, but I’m sure that your Personal Assistant did and I’m sure he/she conveyed the overall picture to you.
I’m not sure if you’ve spent any time reading through the entries at iwontbuyfromgm.com either. In fact, I’m pretty sure you haven’t, but again, someone who talks to you and inhabits the appropriate pay grade probably has.
Just prior to this letter coming online, a press release should have gone out about the campaign and that may lead to a little more discomfort. Again, I apologise, but it should only be temporary, especially if you do what we consider is the right thing – sell Saab.
May I call you Ed?
Ed, you’ve admitted that you don’t know a heck of a lot about cars, which means you’re about ten steps ahead of Bob Nardelli. You were called in to be like The Wolf in Pulp Fiction. You’re the cleaner. You’re supposed to be dispassionate and get. the. job. done.
We understand that, but you should know that there’s a heck of a lot riding on this, and it’s not just the cars we’ll buy in the next 5 years.
Saab isn’t just another car company. Pontiac was. Saturn wasn’t but became one after a little time. Hummer’s something else all together. But the point here is that in Saab, GM had something special, something they failed to build on.
The interesting part is that they knew they had something special. They just didn’t know what to do with it. They got plenty out of Saab by way of technology and design, but they didn’t put in the necessary work to make the brand shine.
Thankfully, they put in enough to make it viable, though. That’s where we’re at today.
You’re 60% government owned at the moment and whilst the government are playing a hands-off role in your day-to-day operations, they’re still watching over your shoulder. So far you’re company’s failed at closing every deal you’ve gone in for. Even Hummer’s yet to close and that was the most identifiable and distinct (extinct?) brand you have.
You’re not the old GM, but you still need some runs on the board. You need to close this deal.
I’d encourage you to read the letter I published earlier today, sent in on behalf of Saab dealers in the United States, Ed. That’s a whole lot of other bad news waiting to hit. It’s not like they’re trying to be difficult and I know they don’t want to. They signed those agreements in good faith. They just want get moving.
Like the rest of us.
We’re like a couple that got together over a few drinks at one of those alternate lifestyle conventions. You were on the prowl, it was a slightly crazy night and after a few shots someone said “Wanna buy a car company?” You said “Yes” and we’ve both regretted it ever since.
We’ve been the odd one out in your polygamous household, spurned by your other wives but fed just to keep us ticking along.
We both know it’s not working.
Ed, the mission and the message is to SELL.
You get future partnerships with regard to tech development. You get build and parts contracts and most of all, you get the warm fuzzy feeling of not killing off around 10,000 jobs in country you’ve sucked the knowledge from for the last 20 years.
Eeew, I got uncomfortable again, didn’t I? Sorry.
But that’s really what’s happening here. You can shut the company down and incur a whole heap of costs and bad publicity, or you can sell the company, feel better and probably pocket some money in the medium to long term for your trouble.
It really ought to be a no-brainer.
So don’t be greedy. Don’t set the bar at a ridiculous height. Do a deal that can get done. Let one of these fine, courageous bidders take your Swedish problem off your hands and then you can get back to using your email, hassle free.
I’ll even move heaven and earth to get you one of the first 9-5s off the production line. It doesn’t get better than that.
Have a nice day, Ed, and happy new year.

Alternative Saab marketing – grow from within

December 29, 2009 in Saabology

I first came across this post just over a week ago. I then managed to lose the URL (I have all the history stuff turned off on my browser) and then this morning I managed to dig it up again.

I wanted to run it up the flagpole here and see if anyone salutes. I love special edition cars and more than that, I think the idea has some genuine merit.

The idea appears on a site called Detective Marketing, written buy a guy named Stefan Engeseth.

In a nutshell:

Here is my solution: start selling one of the SAAB cars customized into a special edition. Sell it for a higher price, lets say 50.000 Euros. Give buyers half of the money back after 2 years if they in that time have managed to sell 10 cars to others.

By buying one of the unique SAAB cars the buyer automatically becomes an owner of SAAB…….that will make fans go from being ambassadors to Kings and Queens (everyone will recognize this special edition of SAAB and see what they stand for – a hero and owner of the SAAB brand).

Include a free trip to the SAAB [factory] in Trollhättan for every partner that owns a SAAB car. Give each car a unique number, so more fans can expand the fantribe…..

Numbers: Sell 200,000 cars before they are made to consumers, employees etc. 200.000 x 50.000 Euros = 10 Billion Euros.

10 billion Euros will make a difference.

There’s more at Stefan’s site.

Now, first things first. Saab have never sold 200,000 cars in a year, let alone 200,000 cars at 50,000Euro. A plan like this would have to start small and grow from there, but I think the idea has merit.

Make the car special in terms of powertrain and specification and people are more likely to pay a premium. Include a stake in the company and you’ve got some serious ambassadors, people with an incentive to actively promote the brand.

I’m not sure what the numbers would look like on a plan like this, but if they were manageable then perhaps its something that a company like Saab could look at in the future.

It’s the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that Saab will need to use in the future.

Saab dealer concerned with potential for Saab closure

December 29, 2009 in Saabology

I received this email today, along with a request to publish. It’s fair to say that Saab dealers have a lot to lose here, with big investments in property and big finance requirements to stock vehicles.
I think this letter summarises the concerns and feelings of many dealers pretty well.
I do have to emphasise, however, that the opinions expressed in this letter are those of the author and this email is submitted from the US Saab National Dealer Council. It is not an opinion formed by Saabs United (which is not to say I disagree with them, but they haven’t been formed by me).

——
In recent weeks General Motors has made several public statements contemplating the wind down of Saab Automobile. These comments have raised considerable doubt that GM is negotiating in “good faith” in its expressed efforts to sell Saab, since there are currently various companies that are bidding for Saab. On Sunday December 20th, the Dutch niche sports car maker Spyker submitted a new bid that matches GM’s initial offer for sale as well as addresses each of the concerns that GM raised when they walked away from the transaction on December 18th. Spyker has all contracts ready for signature and is prepared to fully execute the deal and take ownership of Saab Automobiles AB before GM’s stated deadline of December 31st.
Since it is evident that GM has a deal from Spyker with completed due diligence and ready for signature as well as additional recently submitted expressions of interest, a decision to close down Saab will cause unnecessary and avoidable injury and loss to the US Saab dealer network and its employees.
In June 2009, GM forced the US Saab dealers into signing Deferred Termination Agreements, under which the dealers waived their respective State franchise legal rights and remedies that are available when a manufacturer closes a dealership for any reason. These rights were established to protect and save the life’s savings of a small business against the decisions of the large corporation. The dealers waived these rights based on GM’s expression of “Good Faith” efforts to sell Saab Automobiles AB. If the dealers would not sign the Agreement, their businesses would be terminated immediately and their franchise agreements would not be considered as part of Saab Automobiles AB in the sale to a buyer.

Tuesday morning snippets

December 29, 2009 in News

There’s some great stuff in the press today. Most of it has already been mentioned in comments, but it’s all definitely stuff that needs to be on the front page here.

——

iwontbuyfromgm.com now has over 3,400 comments and the Facebook group has over 2,300 members!!!

Articles are starting to pop up all over the place in Europe and the press release should go live in the US at midnight tonight. Hopefully it’ll get picked up by some of the news services there.

The goal along was to keep the spotlight on GM and their dealings with Saab. Ford managed a deal for Volvo. Can the new GM manage just one deal?

——

Our mate David Blumberg has got his right recognition for his Griffin Up! efforts. The song that we featured here yesterday has since been picked up by Autoblog and Dagens Industri in Sweden.

Go David. And Griffin Up!!

——

A writer named Jonas Malmborg has finally(!) started asking the questions about why Sweden seems so indifferent towards Saab’s fate.

A Googletrans won’t quite do this article justice, I fear, so I won’t post a full one here. You can check it out yourself, though, and nod your head with every point he makes.

Here’s a taste:

It is one thing in the ongoing debate about Saab that bewilders me. Swedes in general, and when financial journalists and other professionals think in particular, seem to agree on whether there is a logic to close the western Swedish car brand. We produce, although the world’s smartest and safest cars, but still. Put it down. It is too expensive.

Saab cannot be let go without a whimper. It’s great to see this level of support from the Swedish press emerging. I hope others can follow suit.

——

The next biggest article is one from Svenska Dagbladet, who have had a chat with Victor Muller from Spyker.

A selective Googletrans:

On Christmas Eve, leaving the last Saab speculator, sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller, Sweden, Trollhättan, and returned to Holland. It was just before Christmas he last spoke with representatives from GM. Since then there has been silence from across the Atlantic.

- We expect a response from GM this week. Since the deadline is December 31 so I expect very much that they are of themselves very soon, “said Victor Muller, but he believes that it ärväldigt difficult to predict whether the deal will go through.

- I’m very hopeful, I have been since its inception. We have done everything we possibly can just.

What reactions did you get in Sweden by Saab representatives?

- To date the response has been very encouraging. Everyone wants to of course make sure that Saab will survive and if it can happen thanks to Spyker, I believe that people can be very happy.

Have you been in contact with former speculator Koenigsegg Group?

- Yes, I know Christian very well, “said Victor Muller and admits that he and Christian von Koenigsegg has talked a lot with each other on the Saab.

- We have definitely, he has been very helpful. He did not give me the business plan but it’s the same business now as they worked on with Saab. So our business plan is basically the same……

……But New Year’s frontier Victor Muller seems to be focused on is no longer as important, according to Hakan Danielsson.

- New Year’s limit was whether it would sell Saab from GM’s side. But then you came to this decision to close down well before year end. And then they said, while that in the closing phase was willing to look at the interesting quotes. So I do not think that the date 31/12 is as sacred anymore.

——

So what do we make of G. Clotaire Rapaille?

This guy is a marketer with a reasonable reputation (from what I’ve heard) and he’s sitting by the phone right now, waiting for GM to call him about saving Saab.

“I want Saab. Give me Saab and I will save it and make it prosper again,” writes G. Clotaire Rapaille……”This is a fantastic brand and we should not let it die.”

When contacted by The Local, Rapaille said he was “very serious” about his offer, and explained that while he hadn’t made direct contact with Saab, General Motors (GM), or the Swedish government about his proposal, he expected to hear from them at some point.

“They will try to contact me, I’m sure,”

When I first read his newsletter spiel yesterday, I slowly nodded my head as he talked about brand values, etc, but then I got to this part:

“The time of management by engineers is over,”

…and I knew we had a potential nutter. The time for total beancounter control is over, but don’t ever count out the engineers. The marketer’s job is fit the marketing to the engineering excellence. Not the other way ’round.

I think one of the commenters there at The Local summarised it perfectly, though you’ll have to guess for yourself which one.

Another day closer.

And then there were two – Florida based group out

December 29, 2009 in News

UPDATE: Just received an email from someone saying they know the group, and that the group is still in.
Given that I don’t know the group or this emailer, but that I know Djup Strupe very well, I’ll stick to my original story, but just keeping you in the loop…..
——
Just in from Djup Strupe….
News that the Florida-based group who were looking to bid on Saab Automobile are now out of the running.
Whilst I’ve had a couple of leads, I’m still not 100% on who they are, but the word from Djup Strupe is that they’ve now left the room. There may be a news story about this on one of the major news services shortly.
So we’re back to Spyker and Merbanco/Sason*
And a photo from Flickr to keep people smiling……
RedSaab99.jpg
——
I know some people are wondering why it’s so quiet around here lately.
1) I’m knackered.
2) Every morning there’s around 200 emails to get through. Great tips, but a productivity killer. Again, please don’t be offended if I can’t get back to you, but there’s just so much going on right now.

* Sason is just me name for the Swedish Consortium. it’s not totally irrelevant, but the main reason for calling them ‘Sason’ is that it’s a heck of a lot quicker to type than ‘Swedish Consortium’

Saab 9-5 out and about in Trollhattan

December 29, 2009 in News

Paul Akerlund from the IF Metall union says there’s no big news expected today and he’s always been a good barometer, so with that, how about something normal to put smiles on people’s faces?

Something like the Saab 9-5 jetting about in Stockholm.

Auto Motor and Sport picked up these photos and whilst many Swedes would have seen them already (they’ve been around for about 24 hours) some may have not. If you haven’t you can click that link and see a few more.

Saab9-5Stockholm.jpg

This car could well be Jan-Ake Jonsson’s own personal whip. It seems senior management are driving some of the first pre-production cars at the moment (see Mats Fägerhag, head of Tech Development on video here) and JAJ does have a place in Stockholm, which I’m sure would have been his Christmas destination.

I hope he had a great Christmas.

Saab9-5Stockholm2.jpg

According to the registration data, the car seems to be the 2.0T model, 220hp and fitted with XWD. That’s the same configuration I drove back in September so I’m sure that JAJ is one happy motorist right now as the car was sensational.

Saab sale snapshot

December 28, 2009 in Editorial

It’s the start of a new week, and the end of a Christmas holiday that’s seen many of the players take a breath.
It’s time to take a deep breath and get ready for one final lunge to finishing line. Here’s where we’re at.
THE TIMELINE
As I write this entry, it’s almost 7pm on Monday 28th December. That’s 3am on the same day in Detroit and 9am in Sweden.
If GM wait out the full length of their deadline, then we’ve got just short of 4 days to go until midnight on Thursday, the 31st. Hopefully the wait won’t be that long, though.
I’m looking out for something on Wednesday, but that’s just based on a hunch from Djup Strupe and even then it was just Sprupe’s feeling, not set in concrete.
THE PLAYERS
General Motors – I believe they really do want to sell, despite evidence of a plan B and the wheels being set in motion for a closure. Selling is the better option, imagewise. My guess that selling or winding down would be pretty even, financially. They haven’t been able to complete a sale yet, and failure to do so on any account would be a blow to some of the execs there. It would be proof to their critics of the supposed dead wood they were carrying and more than anything it would highlight the inability of current management to get something done.

Merbanco/Swedes – Merbanco and the Swedish consortium, let’s call them ‘Sason’ for the moment (not their real name), have both been involved in the sale since early this year. I don’t know why the Sason group didn’t progress, but Merbanco (an investment group from Wyoming, USA) were there in Zurich when Koenigsegg were named as GM’s preferred bidder. So they’ve both been involved for some time, they know the landscape and to varying extents, the decision makers know them, too.
CJ, the CEO from Merbanco, has said right here on SU that they’ve agreed to everything they’ve been asked. They’re effectively ready to go, ready to close the deal.

Spyker
Spyker came into the picture after the deal with Koenigsegg went south. When GM announced back on December 1 that they would give Saab until the end of the year (again), Victor Muller was seen at the LA Auto Show on December 2 or 3 saying that they would make a play for Saab.
They did so and were considered the frontrunners until GM announced some concerns had scuttled the deal on December 18. We’ve been on the edge of our proverbial seats ever since.
Spyker re-organised their group and submitted a new deal that apparently addressed all eleven points of concern that GM had, but the deal hasn’t been done yet.

Miami group
Talk appeared from an extremely well placed Djup Strupe over the weekend of a third group, based in Miami. Little is known about this group, so it’s hard to speculate on their chances. Some have speculated that it might be the guy behind Autonation, but I’ve done a little homework there and I just don’t think so. His business model is a service model, not manufacturing and I just couldn’t see him going into manufacturing, especially in such a risky foreign environment.
Whoever they are, if they’ve only just joined the dance, it’s hard to see them succeeding in a timeframe that would suit GM.
——
So…..
We wait. We think. We hope. We support Saab and all the people who work for the company.

GM up to their old tricks – plan possible re-badge of Saab 9-5

December 28, 2009 in News

Some things never change.
I can tell you quite positively that GM are negotiating a sale of Saab, but it seems their plan B is to just take the 9-5, shove a different badge on it and sell it as something else.
The story is at DN.se and here’s a snippety Googletrans:

According to Dagens Industri’s sources, GM is planning to use the new Saab 9-5: an own model program, including a future Buick in the U.S.. GM is also in a letter to Saab’s sub-contractors have estimated the time of closure of Saab to five years.
There are sources in Saab Automobile in the Dagens Industri – DI – indicates that GM now see positive opportunities to closure of Saab. By making use of Saab’s technology, tools and production equipment for GM use the new 9-5: an – that would be launched in the spring – to a future Buick in the U.S..
In the GM is also talk of exploiting Saab technology for the production of a new premium car for Opel, “says DI’s sources. It would then be about the reopening of the closed trial with an Opel Senator in Europe.

Shakespeare couldn’t even document the full bastardry these beancounters are capable of.

Griffin Up!

December 28, 2009 in Uncategorized

This whole campaign to support Saab in this sale process now has a theme song :-)
It’s called Griffin Up! and it was written and recorded by a regular here at SU, a Swede named David Blumberg.

I reckon David’s done an absolutely brilliant job of this. and to think that someone could be so moved as to put all that together is just really heartwarming.
——
For those who need some context here……
Christopher Johnson from Merbanco (one of the bidders for Saab) has commented on this site a number of times now and he signs off with the phrase “Cowboy Up!”. People have adopted this and formulated their own “…….. Up!” phrases, with David adopting Griffin Up! for the song.

iwontbuyfromgm.com update

December 27, 2009 in Saabology

Hi all,
We are now at 2,400 comments on the actual iwontbuyfromgm.com website and there are also 1,000+ members of the Facebook group, too.
Some of these overlap, of course, but I think we can say we’ve realistically engaged 3,000 people in just three days at this point. Twitter has also been fired up and hopefully people are re-tweeting and signing up as we speak (thanks AlAero).
My thanks to all those who have participated. 3,000 people in three days, with one of those days being Christmas Day, is a fantastic achievement.

The purpose of this campaign is to let GM know that people are watching what happens here. If they wish to keep these people as even prospective customers, they should do the right thing and sell Saab rather than close it down. The 3,000 we’ve reached is a small number, but the number that reads the press coverage will be much larger.

The campaign isn’t over, though. We don’t have the luxury of resting on our laurels. The decision comes in days, not weeks, so the news about the campaign has to come out before then.
I’ve written a press release, which I’ll update with the latest numbers some time tomorrow prior to sending off.
In case you’ve missed it, the campaign has already attracted some media attention, with Auto Motor and Sport giving it some space a few days ago.
Please continue to spread the message. Let’s see how far a final push can increase our participation rate. The more the merrier!
——
Hopefully we can get past this business stuff soon and concentrate on Saabs, and the new owner.

Sunday morning Snippets

December 27, 2009 in Saabology

We’re over 2,100 comments now at www.iwontbuyfromgm.com and have more than 760 members in the Facebook group.
Please keep spreading the word!
——
I don’t want to make a big deal of things at this point, hence inclusion in the snippets entry, but…..
I’ve heard from someone very well placed overnight, telling me that there is actually a third bidder in the process for Saab. I know very little about this person/group except for a location – Miami.
Am doing some detective work.
——
Somebody in Oz, please buy this car and turn it into a Viggen or something. Great car, low KMs and a very nice price.
9-3AeroCarsales.jpg
And no, I don’t know the seller.
——
I know we covered this article a few months ago when it was released, but I got a timely reminder about it in my inbox this morning.
This is the best article about Saab written this year, by anybody anywhere.
——
This is Jason P on his wedding day back in September. I’m reliably informed that his beautiful bride also managed to sneak into the photos later on :-)
Congratulations, mate! And a great shot.

Again, I must apologise if you’ve emailed me in the last week and I haven’t got back to you yet.
Between this site, the various bits of news, the new campaign and the holidays with visitor from overseas, things are somewhat hectic.
Cheers.

Saab 9-5 seen on the road (extended remix)

December 26, 2009 in Uncategorized

We’ve seen some still shots already, now we have some video of the Saab 9-5 on the road in Sweden.

This video was shot by Joachim K and sent on to Eggs, who’s sent it on to me. Eggs showed part of it the other day, but I’ve added the extra bit Joachim’s provided and glued them together here.

The video is very brief, but shows some who looks remarkably like Saab’s head of Technical Development, Mats Fägerhag, getting out of the car and then driving it away again afterwards. Mats was good enough to stop and talk with Joachim about the car and show him around, too.

Thanks once again to Joachim for the extra footage.

This is what we’re fighting for. Sign up at www.iwontbuyfromgm.com today – and tell your friends, too!

The Local: Swedes start lamenting the possible demise of their auto industry

December 26, 2009 in News

The Local is reporting about Swedes starting to feel a bit sad now that a Volvo sale has been agreed with a Chinese buyer, and that Saab is a chance to be ‘closed’. It seems closure rather than sale is still the Swedish media mindset for Saab.

The Volvo news, coming as uncertainty looms about General Motor’s decision to shut down Saab, also raised questions as to the future of Sweden’s auto industry.
Some of Sweden’s major newspapers wondered if Chinese ownership would weaken the Volvo brand. “Volvo: Money can’t buy everything,” read an editorial in Dagens Nyheter newspaper. “In mass-production China, there is a risk that the trademark will hollow out.”…..
……Dagens Nyheter’s auto industry reporter wrote in an analysis piece this week that Geely’s takeover was “a journey into the unknown.”

It’s not all just about Volvo, however.

Others speculated about the demise of the Swedish auto industry in light of the Volvo sale and the Saab closure. “Both Swedish carmakers Saab and Volvo are on their way out of Sweden. Saab risks being shut down and everything points to Volvo becoming Chinese,” public radio reporter Tommy Fredriksson said earlier.
“What’s going to happen to Swedes’ self-image?” he asked, calling Volvo and Saab modern-day examples of traditional “Swedish value.”

Tommy, don’t count Saab out yet.
If you and the Swedish media put some pressure on GM rather than just accept what you’re (IMHO, incorrectly) told is Saab’s fate, then maybe GM will feel a bit more pressure to make a sale go through.
Whilst Saab are working with GM on a plan for closure of the brand, this work is happening in parallel with negotiations for the sale of Saab to either Spyker or Merbanco/SwedishConstorium.
Saab can still live, and they can still operate in Sweden.
This isn’t the time to feel sorry for the loss of an industry, it’s the time to make some noise and do what you can to try and influence the decision makers. Here’s one way you can help, the other is to write/call the local media and get them to put some heat on GM.
Whilst the negotiations go on, there is still hope for Saab.

Sign up at www.iwontbuyfromgm.com

December 25, 2009 in Saabology

Late last night I launched a new campaign to keep the spotlight on General Motors. It’s called www.iwontbuyfromgm.com and in the first 20 hours it’s logged 670 comments.

Iwontbuyfromgm.com

The purpose of the site is for people to declare to GM that if Saab is closed down, rather than sold, then those people signed up will not consider the purchase of another GM vehicle in the future.

This is a statement to GM that their actions are being watched and that those actions, if they close Saab down, will have consequences for their prospective customers.

Many of you would have signed in the comments section there already. If you’ve done so, then thanks, but there’s more to do.

The time is now.

We need to have a solid number well into four figures in order to get GM to take notice. That means that over this weekend, we need you to promote this campaign as much as you possibly can.

To help with that, I’ve created a Facebook group for the effort. Join the group and promote it to your contact on Facebook. The people in this group will be added to the tally of comments on the dedicated site (with an allowance for duplicates).

The other things you can do:

  • Leave a comment on the site if you haven’t already done so. This is the most important thing you can do.
  • Email some like-minded friends,
  • Make a post on your favourite forum,
  • A post on your national Saab club website.

Trust me – if we can get enough comments on this site then we WILL be able to create the kind of publicity needed to get GM’s attention.

This kind of thing is like a snowball. The fact that 5,000 Saab nuts won’t buy another GM product will not worry them. But the fact that 5,000 Saab nuts will get news coverage and spread the story further will be of concern to them.

So please – the time is now. This is not any sort of threat to GM, it’s a campaign to let them know that their decisions will effect YOUR decisions.

Let them know at iwontbuyfromgm.com
