Merry Christmas from Tennessee!

December 25, 2009 in Troll Stuff

Just a quick note to all to have a Happy Christmas. Here in North America it’s still Christmas morning and my children (ages 10 and 11) are still busy with the stuff that Santa brought.
eng christmas.jpg
I’ve been overwhelmed this Christmas with well wishes and other surprises. I hope that you have been, too.
This is a very odd time in our history — as Saab fanatics, as employees and business owners and as human beings. Naturally, we have only full control of one of those things — who we are as people. If I had one thing to say to each of you in the coming year, it would be to focus on that one aspect of your existence — be the best citizen of this planet that you can be. Car companies will come and go, jobs will come and go and even prosperity will come and go. The only thing that we can truly control is how we react to these impermanent things.
“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
I wish you well in 2010.
P.S.
If you’re lucky, you have a great neighbor like George to smoke you a turkey for Christmas dinner. He uses his own brine and hickory wood. Words can’t describe how good it smells. Again, I am blessed!!

Christmas update from Merbanco

December 25, 2009 in News

From Christopher Johnston, CEO of Merbanco and one of the bidders to acquire Saab Automobile, a Christmas eve update on the Saab sale situation:

We are patiently making progress and have considered and agreed to everything we have been asked. All of our Sweden and Management partners, and the Swedish Government, have been a big help. All along, we have believed our skills are a good fit for Saab and Saab for us. We have learned a ton over the past 7 months and I can’t imagine someone trying to learn what we know in a matter of weeks. We are comfortable with GM deciding on their timetable.

——
Message to GM – you’ve got two good bidders here. Make the sale.

Clarifying some troublesome Saab reports overnight

December 25, 2009 in News

Yeah, it’s Christmas, and whilst GM may have called a pause in negotiations on the deal (which frankly, I find to be astounding considering it’s their deadline and thousands of jobs are at stake) that doesn’t mean that the situation rests.
It seems there was a bit of drama here while I was sleeping.
The drama seems to have stemmed, once again, from some mainstream media reports about the Saab situation that weren’t necessarily inaccurate, but from what I can see, they failed to give the full context of the situation.
Let’s use the AFP report as the basis for discussion here:

US auto giant General Motors will not consider Dutch sportscar maker Spyker’s renewed bid for Saab and is planning to shut down the Swedish brand, a Swedish newspaper reported Thursday.
“Saab’s board had a short meeting yesterday. GM representatives were on the phone from the US. And the discussions were entirely about the shutting down Saab — not about the new bid,” wrote daily Svenska Dagbladet (SVD).
GM announced last week it would wind down its loss-making Swedish unit Saab after breaking off sales talks with Spyker.
But the Dutch company then made a last-ditch bid for the iconic brand, which it extended indefinitely hours before it was due to expire Monday.
“The word (at the meeting) was to shut down Saab and that is what we have started working on,” Haakan Danielsson of Sweden’s engineering union told SVD.

There’s nothing here that is factually incorrect (except for the interpretation). But as I mentioned at the top, it does lack some context. The fact that the meeting only discussed the wind-down process is not an indication that negotiations have failed. All it means is that the wind-down process was the topic of discussion for that particular meeting.
What we’ve got going on here is two concurrent processes.
GM announced last week that negotiations with Spyker had failed and that they would wind down the Saab business. Whilst I believe that will formally begin on January 1 (if it happens) the wheels are being set in motion now. That’s what I believe was happening at that meeting – discussions about how that would begin.
Whilst that’s happening…..
There are also ongoing negotiations with both Spyker and the Merbanco/Swedish consortia about the sale of Saab. As I write this, both groups are still negotiating with GM (yes, confirmed) and the 31st December deadline for a decision is still in play.
If GM figure that they can do a deal with one of these groups, then they’ve said that they would keep Saab operating to allow that deal to go through.
So yes, they’re planning the wind-down operation, and yes, they’re negotiating with two groups for a sale. Hopefully the latter situation will render the former situation moot.
——
In the meantime, if you haven’t already visited, head on over to www.iwontbuyfromgm.com and consider whether you’ll buy another GM product again if they close the Saab Automobile operation.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU

December 25, 2009 in Editorial

Hey, everyone.
It’s Christmas Day here in Australia and so I’d like to take a quick moment to wish all of you a very safe, fun and merry Christmas. I hope you and your families have a great time together and should you be away from your loved ones, I hope it won’t be long ’til you’re back where you belong.
It’s been a long year but it ain’t over yet.
So rest up. Eat well. Reflect on the good things you’ve received. There’s more work to be done.
Merry Christmas to everyone at Saab around the world, and to all of you who visit here. I hope you have a wonderful day.

GM continues with wind-down, Spyker bid will take a while

December 25, 2009 in News

UPDATE: Thanks to those who (rightly) raised questions about this report in comments. After re-reading the Economic Times piece, it specifically mentions Wednesday meeting and “renewed” bid. I’ll run it for now, please corroborate or deny if you can. Denied!
OK, so for now, let’s say that this article from Economic Times at least has misleading wording, and I’ll leave it at that.
Please proceed with caution.
I believe that we’ve already debunked this one, so let’s move on.
———————
In related news, Dutch Billionaire John de Mol is not involved with the Spyker bid according to Reuters.
——————–
Finally, some better news from a reliable news source, Forbes.
They indicate that as of Thursday (today here in the US and Europe), Spyker and GM are still talking. However, they indicate that this will take a while — perhaps months. That’s what it should take, frankly.
Whew. Sorry for the Saab histrionics, folks, I lost my head for a minute! Carry on.

Have your say – Will you buy from GM if they kill Saab?

December 24, 2009 in Saabology

Christmas is coming, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the campaign to keep GM focused on Saab takes a break.
IwontbuyfromGM.jpg
GM must sell Saab, and they must know that failure to negotiate a suitable deal for Saab will have an adverse effect on their customers and their public image.
Thousands of Swedes and others around the world will lose their jobs, and an iconic brand, so neglected for so many years, will come to an unnecessary end.
This is your chance to tell GM how their decision will effect your future purchasing decisions.
Whilst we’re all Saab people, some may consider other brands for second vehicles in their homes. Others may not own Saabs any more, but are sympathetic to Saab because of past experiences.
If GM want to be in the frame for all of us, I think they should do the right thing by Saab.
Go to iwontbuyfromgm.com and tell GM whether or not you’re likely to be a future customer.
THEN…..
Tell everyone you know to do the same, if they’re willing. There’s a Facebook link on the site, which I encourage you to use, too.
We need to keep GM in the spotlight.

Saab 9-5 spotted in the wild, part two

December 24, 2009 in News

This from sejoke on Twitter:

Nothing remarkable, except that it’s nothing remarkable. A 2010 Saab 9-5 doing something very pedestrian and “normal”. Could be testing, could be anything, really.

Thanks to you-know-who.

The reason things are so quiet around here is that I’m working on another campaign, one to keep the spotlight on GM and give people a chance to participate in the process once again.
Will launch shortly, because time is short!

WSJ interview with Victor Muller from Spyker

December 24, 2009 in Saabology

The Wall St Journal’s Deal Journal has just published a short interview with Victor Muller from Spyker, speaking to him about the company’s intentions for Saab should be successful in the acquisition.
Here’s a snippet:
——
DJ: How can Spyker improve Saab?
Muller: Saab is being carved out of GM and will have to stand on its own legs. In order to do that, it will require a completely different state of mind in terms of entrepreneurship. We are very entrepreneurial company. We manage to create Spyker out of nothing. The company hadn’t been active for 75 years when we started in 2000. We bring experience and branding and sales. I design all of my cars. Saabs would benefit from design input to make Saabs more “Saabish.” You buy a Saab for a reason. It is quirky. It is different. If you wanted a car that looked like everyone else you would buy a Volkswagen.

God Yul wishes for Saab and Trollhattan

December 24, 2009 in Saabology

It’s just a few days before Christmas and things are quietening in Trollhattan. Of course, this city is the home of Saab, but it’s also a place I’ve come to love, having visited there twice now.
It has been a very long year for these hardy Swedes and there’s no respite yet, as they await the negotiations between GM and the two parties bidding for the acquisition of Saab Automobile.
I just wanted to take a moment to post my Christmas greeting for Trollhattan residents and Saab employees here.
——
The reason Saabs United exists, the reason people visit here, is because we’re car people, and the cars we love to drive are Saabs.
To all the good people at Saab in Trollhattan and around the world, this means that your work fuels our passion. Personally speaking, I’m very grateful for all that you do and I want to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a better, brighter and much quieter 2010.
You people in Trollhattan are an inspiration and you deserve to carry on doing what you do best.
Merry Christmas to you all, and whilst I’m here I’ll pass on a Christmas wish from my colleagues at the Saabs United Historic Rally Team.
SUHRTChristmas.jpg
——
All of you SU regulars are welcome to post your holiday messages to Saab and the people of Trollhattan here in comments.
I’m not sure how many locals actually look around here, but I’m sure that those who do might appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers,
SW

Jan-Ake Jonsson appreciation on Facebook

December 24, 2009 in Saabology

JanAke.jpgThis one’s probably long overdue, actually.
One appreciative and enterprising employee at Saab has set up a Jan-Ake Jonsson Appreciation Society page at Facebook.
Click that link to see the page, join up and show your appreciation for Saab Automobile’s Managing Director, the hardest working man in the auto biz this year.
I betcha Carlos Ghosn and Sergio Marchionne don’t have one of these!
Jan-Ake…… you are an inspiration to all of us.

Aftonbladet show Saab 9-5 wagon

December 23, 2009 in Saabology

Aftonbladet have managed to snap a picture of the Saab 9-5 wagon somewhere.
Looks like the real deal to me. Am not sure how they got this, but more power to them.

I just hope they get a chance to make it.

Wednesday night snippets

December 23, 2009 in Saabology

it’s my understanding the discussions on the sale of Saab have taken a break due to the oncoming Christmas holiday. I’m unsure how long they’ll be postponed for, but hopefully not for long given the gravity of the situation and GM’s deadline.
So there’s not likely to be any big news for a few days, at least.
——
In the meantime, it’d be good to keep the momentum up.
Inspired by the invitation I received from CNN, I’ve taken up the cause of writing some letters to major newspapers for potential publication. Maybe you could do the same where you live? Motoring magazines could be a target, too.
The emphasis on the letter, for me at least, is GM’s stewardship of Saab and Saab’s viability under a new, more attentive owner.
You might think this is a pointless exercise, but the goal is to keep the spotlight on GM. Their press people get daily snippets of articles where the company is mentioned in order to keep tabs on public perception. The more this issue is highlighted in the news, the more they have to think about.
——
I’ve received a suggestion about getting Saabs parked outside the Renaissance Center for a photo opportunity. Perhaps a shot with the Swedish parliament buildings in the background would be appropriate too?
Any takers?
——
There was a great radio show aired the other day about the potential demise of Saab.
Featured on the show were a former SaabUSA employee, John Moss, as well as one of the editors from Automotive News and Ryan from SaabHistory.

SU will continue all through Christmas, but I’m not expecting any big announcements over that time.

Join the SU Google Map!

December 23, 2009 in Saabology

I’m not even sure who created this – there have been 3,500 comments here in the last 5 days – but I’m very thankful for it and I heartily invite you to add you and your car to the Saabs United Google Map.
We did have another map service a few years ago, but I think this one might be a tad more reliable.
SUmap.jpg
So how do you get yourself onto this map?
First of all, you need to click here to get to the map.
Next, you need to login using your Google Account login. If you don’t have one, you can create one while you’re there.
Once you’re logged in, zoom in to find your location on the map, so you can place your pin there.
In the top left hand corner of the map screen, you can see a series of three buttons. One of them is a button for a placemarker. Click on that placemarker button and drag it to your location.
Once you’ve marked your location, you can then write in your name and some details about your car. If you’ve got a URL for an image, you can place that URL in an image field and put a photo with your marker as well.
It’s pretty easy to use, and a good indicator of how global and wide reaching the Saab community is.
——
My sincere thanks to the guys who organised this map. Great stuff!

Saab key to seasonal present delivery……

December 23, 2009 in Saabology

Even Santa drives a Saab!
C’mon GM, you can’t strip Santa Claus of his ride. Won’t someone think of the children!!!!
No other sled handles winter conditions quite like a Saab and Santa needs the superb seats in order to ensure that his very arduous trip is made in comfort.
Saab Sled-X.jpg

On a more serious note, I really hope GM executives are working on this deal over the Christmas period. Sure, have dinner and hand out the presents, but a 3 or 4 day break when the deadline is only 8 days away is just not on.
Remember that stunt when Rick Wagoner flew in a corporate jet to Washington to beg for money? Sure, it made sense from a business and time-management perspective, but the only thing people remember is one of the senators saying “What, you couldn’t downgrade to First Class?” It was another PR nightmare.
Work on it, GM. The spotlight is on. Sell Saab.
