Current Saab buyers the tip of the iceberg with regard to number of Saab fans.

December 23, 2009 in Saabology

I know this is short lived, but it’s just another indicator to General Motors that the Saab community and the interest in Saab is much bigger than what they think.
From Popular Mechanics

At one point on December 21, three days after GM announced it was planning to wind down the brand, “Saab” was in the top six Internet searches in Yahoo! If the Swedish car brand could have achieved that kind of curiosity in life, rather than it coming after the seeming death sentence handed out to the company by General Motors this week, we might not be looking at the business equivalent of a toe-tag hanging on Saab’s front bumper.

If GM thought that shutting Saab would slip under the radar, then they miscalculated in a big way. The spotlight is on and this story will linger in a big way.
There are a lot of people that have extremely fond memories connected with Saab. They might be older generations who saw Carlsson will rallies in a little two-stroker that shouldn’t have been able to win a Main St traffic light derby. They might be the kids of those older folks, who grew up riding in the back seat of a 96.
Whoever you are, chances are you’ve got some fond memory of when you encountered a Saab and the fact that it was unique enough to make an impression on you.
So all those people are going to be having very negative thoughts and feelings about a gigantic corporate overlord shutting down a little brand from a foreign land that they don’t see as profitable – especially after they read the stories about how Saab has been treated in that time.
And those stories will come. Journalists started writing them in premature obituaries last week.
GM – you have two options. Sell Saab or close Saab. One is much better than the other – from a PR perspective, an ethical perspective and most likely from a business perspective, too (otherwise, why would they even consider it).
A government had the good grace to smile upon you earlier this year. Pay it forward.

Saab sale – a PR dream, or a PR nightmare

December 23, 2009 in Editorial

I know that we’ve written emails to Ed Whitacre and previously, we’ve sent emails to Maud Olofsson via the Swedish government website…… but I can’t help but think that the need remains to keep them in the spotlight.
I don’t know if more emails would help at this late stage. The time to make them think is almost over and they’re in ‘doing’ mode now. But still….
Hence, I just wanted to say to GM and to the Swedish government that this Saab sale represents both an opportunity and a threat for them. The Saab company and community is pretty small by most car company standards, but it’s a bit like an iceberg. If they think that the Saab community is represented solely by dismal 2009 sales, then they’re sorely mistaken.
This deal and its success could be a public relations (PR) opportunity or a PR nightmare for both GM and the Swedish government.
To General Motors
You have owned a part-share in Saab for a whole twenty years now. You’ve had full ownership for 10 years.
Your stewardship of Saab is already a PR nightmare of epic proportions, which is why we’re in this situation. You failed completely in your investment and understanding of the brand and your attempts to corporatise into some sort of GM system should be listed in the dictionary under ‘fail’.

Press Snippets — while we wait edition

December 23, 2009 in Editorial

OK, so we’re waiting for the proverbial smoke from the conclave, we may as well review the editorials from the last 24 hours or so. Some have been good, some have been not so good, and most have said nothing that we didn’t already know. It’s good to have some corroboration of your opinions, so those thoughts are welcome, too.
—————
UPDATE: This in from Bloomberg: GM continues to wind-down Saab, and they claim that as few as four manufacturing jobs will remain. I’m not sure that I believe that the numbers will be that low, but it would be bleak.
————–
From the Detroit Free Press, Mr. Daniel Howes opines that Saab was the “Stepchild neglected by GM.”
In think that we all agree with that statement. I’ve been less hard on General Motors than most of you, but I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Howes when he says:

Saab never delivered on the promise retired GM Chairman Jack Smith saw in the quirky brand because, bottom line, GM seldom gave Saab the resources to compete with premium automakers.

So, what makes this column noteworthy? For starters, it’s in the Detroit Free Press. These people reflect General Motors more directly than most news outlets. They also owe some or all of their livelihood to the big two-and-a-half in Motown. If they say it, it’s got teeth. On the other hand, Mr. Howes hits upon a criticism often leveled at GM in these pages that is a huge, glaring weakness in how GM treated Saab development. Take a look:

The interiors of the latest Cadillacs — SRX crossover, the CTS sedan and wagon — convey a sense of precision and craftsmanship not seen in decades on Cadillacs. The materials are premium; the layout of the communications and climate control stack is intuitive; the newest entries from Chevy (Equinox), Ford (Taurus) and Lincoln (MKT) are just as strong.
The Saab? Not so much. Switches are clunky. The stereo and its small screen are comparatively crude. Materials on the instrument panel lack refinement and feel more like a mid-decade Chevy than an end-of-the-decade premium car purporting to compete with the likes of Audi, BMW and Volvo.

———————
There is a report from the Swedish Wire that has a Dutch billionaire by the name of John de Mol as the secret investor propping up the Spyker bid for Saab. Mr. de Mol owns much or all of Endemol and he sounds like a heavy hitter:

John de Mol also has the financial muscles needed to finance the acquisition. He has created a fortune with the production company Endemol, that he owns together with Italy’s prime minister Silvio Berlusconis’s company Mediasat. His private equity fund also owns significant shares of football team Manchester United and telecommunications company Versatel. In 2005, Forbes magazine named him as one of the 500 richest people in the world.

The angel investor has previously been reported as Marcel Boekhoorn. Boekhoorn owns a portion of Spyker, so I still say that he’s got the inside track. However, if they are both in the mix, so much the better, yes?
(Except perhaps for the part about Manchester United. I’ll duck now while you English readers throw things at me and each other. ;-) )
—————–
Swade posted this one before, but I felt that this column deserved another run during the lull.
I thought that this column enititled Lexus killed Saab, but GM let Saab die. from SpeedSportLife.com was right on the money. The author points out, rightly so, that the competition for premium cars heated up with the addition of new competitors right about the time that Saab was most neglected in terms of product development and product content.
This piece is very, very well-written, but I’ll warn you: it’s not a rosy ending. However, Mr. Baruth does love Saab.

I have a bit of a fantasy, as a former Saab owner and unrepentant fan of the old cars. I dream that Saab comes roaring back under some daring little ownership umbrella, freed to somehow create world-class product on a shoestring and humiliate the Japanese juggernauts on the open road. I close my eyes and hope for a stunning new car that has the spirit of that old 99 Turbo and brings the old virtues to a generation not even alive when the only two turbo cars on the market were the Saab and the Porsche 930. I think of the Saab workers, earning a decent wage and building cars they love, a bulwark against the vomitous tide of look-alike crap from the Pacific Rim, the Asian Tigers, and eventually the open maw of China. I can think about this, and I can smile.

Superb. Well done!

You make the news – draggin it out edition

December 23, 2009 in News

It’s another day, another expectation as to news about a Saab sale.
It’s time for me to hit the ball back over the net and allow you good people to keep yourselves updated while I grab some much needed sleep.
And to Spyker, Merbanco and GM – if you could hold off on an announcement until I wake up, that’d be just peachy.
Thanks.

Dealers: how’s your enquiry rate?

December 22, 2009 in Saabology

I got this in via email from one of our regulars here at SU and thought it might make for a nice diversion whilst we wait….and wait……and wait.

….just reached my dealer to talk about my new 9-3x. Couldn’t reach him in the morning. He just told me that he is so busy because people from all over Germany are calling because they are desperately looking for Saabs they can buy immediately. Either new or slightly used, they don’t care. I’m glad that I got my hands on the 9-3x… I wonder if the same thing is happening elsewhere in Europe.

This would certainly be an interesting phenomenon if it’s happening elsewhere as well.
Dealers, how are things going with you guys in the midst of the current situation?
What is the feedback you’re hearing from customers?

Is Marcel Boekhoorn Spyker’s new investor?

December 22, 2009 in News

The Dutch media has been busy reporting that Marcel Boekhoorn is the new investor in the Spyker bid, replacing the Convers Group and presumably removing one of the concerns that tripped up the Spyker bid last week.
From Telegraaf:

Boekhoorn Part of Spyker bid for Saab
AMSTERDAM — The wealthy investor Marcel Boekhoorn is involved in the revised bid from unprofitable car maker Spyker at the Swedish Saab. This report different stakeholders in this newspaper.
The entrepreneur, for years Spyker shareholder, according to insiders acts as advisor to Muller in the bidding process and would also intend to participate if the takeover succeeds. Boekhoorn himself denies his role: “All not true. It is invented.”

They say he’s in.
He says he’s not.
Personally, I think the only thing that matters is that Spyker would have to choose a new investor wisely. If Convers Group being part of the group was a point of concern, then the only thing that really matters is that they invite a new investor who won’t be a point of concern.
I’m quite sure they’d know this and choose/invite wisely. The fact that they’re so keen on the acquisition indicates to me that they have done so.
Just in case he is the guy and is playing possum with the media, here’s a very brief profile as per Wikipedia:
——
Marcel Boekhoorn (born 30 October 1959, Nijmegen, Netherlands) is a Dutch billionaire investor with a wide array of business interests. Mr Boekhoorn’s estimated current net worth stands at 1,5 billion USD, making him one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in the Netherlands. Boekhoorn, a CPA by training, founded his investment vehicle Ramphastos Investments in 1994. Over the course of the ensuing years Boekhoorn successfully acquired and sold numerous companies.
——
Go to Wikipedia for more.
Interestingly, they list Telegraaf, the newspaper that reported his involvement (and denial) as a company he is an investor in.

Notes to the Saab sale players

December 22, 2009 in Editorial

To Spyker, Merbanco and the mysterious Swedes
Hello bidders.
It’s been a long year, hasn’t it? A rollercoaster. More for some than for others, but the pressure of the last few weeks has been very telling on all of you, I’m sure.
I just wanted to tell you that your commitment to Saab and your willingness to continue this process is inspirational to all of us Saab fans. You’re blessed by being able to do the things that the rest of would like to do – save this very special company.
Of course, saving the company doesn’t just mean acquiring it. You have to rebuild it as well. Whilst we all wait for the climax to this current drama, we know that there are new dramas just around the corner.
For now, though, you guys are heroes in the truest sense of the word. As we’ve done all year, we will continue to wait and hope that one of you can beat GM into submission come up with the right deal – for Saab, for GM and for you.
——
To Ed Whitacre, Chairman and CEO of General Motors
You strike me as a grass roots kind of guy, so I’ll just begin this with a “Hi, Ed”
You’ve seen all of our emails, or at least your PA has told you about them. You’ve probably seen all the press as well. What does all this mean?
It means GM are under the spotlight, Ed. There is a great fondness for Saab around the world and the first threat of closure brought forth a round of premature obituaries that were linked by one common thread – GM let Saab down.
One of our commenters here keeps reminding us that you’re a Texan, so in my mind that leads me to believe you’re a man who understands the need for natural justice. Natural justice for Saab means that GM sells them on and allows them to live or die according to their own ability.
Oh, and about those emails….. can you just bundle them up in a folder, do a ‘select all’ and forward them to Nick Reilly at GM Europe?
Thanks Ed.
——
To Fredrik Reinfeldt, Maud Olofsson, Joran Hagglund
I don’t know what you can do now, but I’ll bet there’s something.
Here’s an incentive – there could be votes in it for you.
There isn’t much more to say, really. I just hope that if someone asks you a question about Saab, you talk about them in positive tones. The company is at risk and their future, even under new ownership, will be a difficult one.
Saab has some exceptional people working for it. They deserve your support, and that means more than triage after they’ve been thrown under the bus.
——
To all of those exceptional people working for Saab in Trollhattan and elsewhere
We don’t know what it’s like to be in your shoes. We can’t understand. But as much as we can, we empathise with you. We want to see your company survive because we love the cars that the company makes. By extension, that means we love the work that you do.
I don’t want to see any of you re-trained or re-employed. I want to see all of you doing what you’re trained to do – build some of the greatest cars I know.
More than that, I want to see you backed by a caring owner, spreading your wings, taking that knowledge that’s been locked up by your current owner and applying it to designing and building even better Saabs in the future.
This Christmas will probably be a very emotional one. I hope it’s a great one for you.
——
To everyone
The only thing that matters here is that these people get to build these cars so that we, the people, can continue to enjoy them.

Godspeed and good sense to all of you.
The time is now.

TTELA: Dutch billionaire new Spyker investor

December 22, 2009 in News

Non-urgent update – below
——
TTELA are quoting a report from Svenska Dagbladet, saying that Spyker’s new investor is an as-yet un-named billionaire Dutch investor.
The Googletrans:

A Dutch billionaire is Spykers new main sponsor for the last Saab bid, writes Swedish Dagbladet (SvD) and refers to several sources familiar with the process.

As I wrote in last night’s You make the news entry, it was my understanding that neither Convers Group or Spyker’s other major shareholder, Mubadela, were major investors in this Saab transaction. They have a part ownership in Spyker Cars, and thereby may be passive partners in this transaction, but they’re not major players.
The original bid for Saab was a co-operative bid between Spyker and Convers Group, but it is assumed that Convers Group have been replaced by this new Dutch investor.
I haven’t found the SvD report that the TTELA report was based on as yet.
The report is now here. Thanks again, Sven!
——
Thanks to Sven in comments, too!
——
Non-urgent update
I don’t think we’re going to hear a decision in the next few hours, based on the time of night in Europe and the language used in Spyker’s press release.
I’m off to take a breath and play golf!

Tuesday morning snippets – Saab sale stories and update

December 22, 2009 in News

No news is good news at this point.
——
An update from the Merbanco/Swedish consortium:
They wish to stress that any report made that they are only after part of the Saab, rather than the whole entity, is not accurate. From CJ at Merbanco:

With management, we are interested in all of Saab. We intend to manufacture cars in Trollhattan if we are picked. If we can’t get all of Saab, we won’t do the deal.

And separately from the Swedish consortium:

Merbanco together with Swedish group are working hard with government on bridging EIB loan with a guarantee to GM as long as it takes to have the EIB in place.

They estimate that such action can close the deal and save significant costs to society with regard to closing Saab.
——
Meanwhile, Spyker have been in talks with GM about their renewed proposal as well. From Bloomberg:

“There’s a dialogue ongoing,” Muller said from his car while traveling in the Netherlands. “It’s very hard to predict the outcome, particularly since GM in principle has taken a decision to shut Saab down.”

As Eggs reported earlier today, Spyker’s deadline has been softened:

Muller said today that Spyker’s 5 p.m. New York time deadline to reach an agreement “is becoming less of interest” as talks progress.

And from Reuters:

“We’ve had various discussions with them today,” Muller told Reuters prior to the extension of the offer expiry, adding that talks were “definitely” ongoing.

That deadline has now passed. No news is good news, as they say.
——
From Djup Strupe:
Speaking of progress, GM scheduled a conference call with US dealers today, the subject of which was going to be a brief on the wind-down process for Saab in the United States.
Instead of talking about that, they basically postponed everything due to the ongoing negotiations.
——
Automotive News ask “What would Bob Sinclair say?” about the potential closure of Saab.
In public I think he’d say “That’s crazy”
In private I think it might have been a little more pointed.
——
BNET claim that regardless of the outcome of negotiations, it seems Saab owners have already left the brand. it’s a nifty introduction to talk about the latest JD Power retention survey findings.
I think the overwhelming response to the Ed Whitacre email campaign kinda dispels that, however.
Speaking of which, I think we can all agree that this quite possibly the most touching contribution to that campaign.
SvizzeraComment.jpg
That sums up what it’s all about.
——-
The Saab Club in the Netherlands has put togehter some great banners to promote the plea to save Saab and email Ed Whitactre:
SaabNLbanner.jpg
——-
A very good treatise on Saab by maniacal driver, Jack Baruth.
I can see where he’s coming from, but in the end he’s just being another fatalist who can’t see a future with a successful Saab in it.
That’s a future I don’t want, even of it’ll take a lot of hard work to get there.

BREAKING NEWS: Spyker softens on deadline

December 22, 2009 in News

UPDATE: GM had a conference call with US dealers early this afternoon, which was supposed to be about the wind-up process. Instead, they told dealers that negotiations were ongoing, and that they’d get back to them when there was something tell……
SW
——
The New York Times is reporting that Spyker has admitted that their offer will stand even after the supposed deadline passes at 5:00 pm Eastern US time (2200 GMT) about three hours from now.
Read the entire clip here.
Update
Apparently the reason that the deadline was lifted is because GM responded with some sort of answer, that according to this report in the Swedish Wire.

Victor Muller, Spyker Cars NV chief executive officer, told Bloomberg that General Motors has responded to the revised bid.

“There’s a dialogue ongoing,” Muller said. “It’s very hard to predict the outcome, particularly since GM in principle has taken a decision to shut Saab down.”

You make the news – Spyker D-Day edition

December 21, 2009 in Saabology

Spyker’s revised bid for Saab is only open for GM’s acceptance for a matter of hours now. The offer is valid until 5pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday December 21.
The revised bid from Merbanco and the Swedish consortium maybe open for a longer period, but a closing date for them is as yet unknown.
I’m about to hit the hay, but hopefully will be up again before Spyker’s closing time. Between now and then, it’s up to you to keep each other informed in comments here.
——
Let me set a few boundaries to ward off some speculation, much of which may come from the news services themselves. This is based on Djup Strupery that I’m quite confident in.

  • I believe that the Convers Group are no longer part of the Spyker deal, but that their place has not been taken by Mubadela.
  • The names of the Swedish consortium are unknown to the public and the group’s intention is to remain unknown unless they are successful in their bid. Speculation so far has been just that – speculation.
  • Merbanco and Spyker are not working together as some have surmised.
  • It’s my firm belief that GM do actually want to sell Saab.

Maud Olofsson will be holding a press conference in Trollhattan later today. GM will not be attending, apparently. As some have mentioned already in comments, I’d expect this is about a sympathetic government being proactive in managing the consequences if Saab are indeed shut down.
That’ll probably be the first bit of news.
The rest (for today, at least) will all hinge on GM. Hopefully there’s a response either way.

Ask GM to sell Saab – take 2

December 21, 2009 in Saabology

We began this earlier today, though as a few people noted in comments, it’s getting difficult to scroll through now (with 576 comments registered).
I’d just like to encourage anyone who hasn’t done so yet to take part and let General Motors know (in the nicest possible way) that Saab fans have a voice.
Saab should be sold to the most viable bidder.
——
EMAIL APPEAL TO ED WHITACRE AT GENERAL MOTORS
Today is a very important day in the life of Saab. I know that it feels like Saab have been on their last breath for some time now, but there is hope remaining for our favourite car company.
Whilst General Motors stated that they would commence an orderly wind-down of Saab Automobile in January 2010, they also stated that a suitable offer from a suitable buyer would be looked at.
They have received just such an offer over the weekend.
General Motors have received a new offer from Spyker for the sale of Saab Automobile. Spyker have structured their new offer in such a way so as to remove all of the the complexities that made their initial offer difficult to close.
In addition to this, General Motors has received a revised offer from Merbanco, along with a Swedish based consortium of investors.
In short, if General Motors are serious about selling Saab, this is their time to act.
——
How you can play a part:
We have one chance only to put across our point of view as Saab owners and enthusiasts. Saab have a business plan, new vehicles and an efficient factory to produce them. They have a passionate base of supporters and the right cars to win new customers to the brand.
The time is now.
The email address for Ed Whitacre, the Chairman and CEO of GM is

eewjr@gm.com

If you care about the future of Saab then I invite you to write a brief, polite and passionate message to Mr Whitacre, outlining why you think Saab should be sold, rather than closed.
I can’t emphasise this enough: make your message passionate, but polite. A passionate message that clearly states a point of view will be read and considered. An angry message will only find its way into the trash.
