Celebration at the Saab Museum

January 27, 2010 in Saabology

Saab employees and other locals in Trollhattan gathered at the Saab Museum this morning for a celebration of the Saab sale to Spyker Cars.

I don’t want to go all paparazzi on you, but do you think these guys look a little tired as they wait for their plane? Or just happy and relieved?

SaabAirport.jpg

The flags outside the main entrance to the Saab Factory have been changed for today. This pic came from Christian and was taken this morning.

I do believe that’s a Spyker C8 outside the Saab Museum……

And then Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson……

And the crowd itself…..

A brief report from one attendee who was there:

Jan-Ake and Victor Muller held short and inspiring presentations and greeted everybody who had been involved in the Saab transaction. It was freezing cold but a lot of people in Trollhättan met up with long applauds. Saab spirit was in the air.

It looks like another wonderful day there. I really wish I could have been there myself. History’s being made over there right now. I really hope those involved are taking it all in.

My thanks to Mats K for most of those images….

EnG Snippets – Saab Independence Day edition

January 27, 2010 in Troll Stuff

Updated to placate take care of Ken (ha!):

OK, so it’s not the best time of year for most of us with the winter weather and general malaise that comes after the beginning of the new year, but can I nominate second Ken’s nomination of January 26 as a recurring Saab holiday of sorts? Saab Independence Day, if you will. We can celebrate each year with Aquavit, ice racing and a fresh oil change. It’s a concept. Please elaborate in comments on what you’d propose.

—————-

On a more serious note, our celebratory mood may lead us to purchase Saab trinkets, T-shirts and the like to commemorate Saab’s rebirth. I will likely do that myself; I “need” (ha!) something.

I ask that you consider where your money is going when you do. There are likely to be opportunistic vendors that jump on this bandwagon for a quick buck and then they are off to the next opportunity. Keep your Saab dollars in the family. Buy your mementos from reputable Saab suppliers — your local dealer, service center or our site sponsors. Someone that you trust to be around for a while and to support Saab for the long haul.

—————-

Swade will never make mention of this, ever, but his peers in the automotive journalistic community are taking notice of his work here at SaabsUnited, and I, for one, will not let these mentions go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Mr. Hilton Holloway at Autocar.co.uk writes this:

But that’s for the future – today’s story is the incredible way that Saab was saved from certain death by a global alliance of enthusiasts and web site activism.

Anybody who’s glad to see Saab survive should be thanking Steven Wade, a local government employee from Tasmania. His enthusiasts website Saabs United (nee Trollhattan Saab) has been the notice board for Saab enthusiasts the world over.

From this website had come a daily feed of inside information and, latterly, the foundation for the global ‘Saab Support Convoys’ demonstrations.

If you think that’s an overstatement, check this. When Victor Muller signed the documents, the first thing he did was call Steven in Australia and tell him that Saab had been sold.

Apparently, Muller said that site’s concentration of global support from Saab enthusiasts had made all the difference to him when he was struggling to get GM to do a deal.

What we’ve seen today is just how much the Internet has changed the world. You’ve heard all the e-buzzwords about ‘the wisdom of crowds’ and the power of the ‘nudge’.

Today, a chap in a house on a small island about far away from Sweden as its possible to get has corralled the support of the world’s Saab enthusiasts, helping force the world’s largest car maker to sell, rather than close, Saab.

There are certainly others who’ve participated and even lead portions of this struggle, but our own Steven Wade deserves the kudos that he gets and will continue to get.

(Thanks to site sponsor Elkparts for the tweet.)

—————–

Jan Åke Jonsson addressed Saab employees in Trollhättan at noon CET today, and I will allow Swade to write about that. It is about 1:30 PM there now, and I’m assuming that some of you reading this were there. If you were, we want to know your reaction! Please let us know in comments.

For those of you not in attendance (like me), a huge crowd was there despite the fact that employees were given the day off (misreported on di.se) a break in production to celebrate (I’m back to the “Saab Independence Day” motif, aren’t I?). A sound bite:

“I’m stunned to see so many here today, it only confirms that we have done right,” said Victor Muller who was rewarded with great applause.

More to come about this, for sure.

As always, thanks for reading!

——
I’ll float the idea quickly here and elaborate more later on…..
It’ll need to be properly co-ordinated, but I spoke with Victor Muller several days ago about the idea of another round of Convoys now that Saab has been sold.
Perhaps in a few months when the northern winter has receded a little?
End of March?
I’ll try and co-ordinate with a few parties in Holland and Sweden and see what can be managed, but your thoughts in comments would be welcome.

The Swedish announcement of Spyker’s acquisition of Saab Automobile from General Motors took place at the Opera Cafe in Stockholm last night.
SVT have provided video of some of the press conference, which I’ve embedded below. If the embedded version is not working, please click here to watch it directly at SVT.
After that, we have a special treat, thanks to a SU regular who just happened to be on the scene :-)

And now for the special treat.
A local guy in Stockholm name Johan thought he’d wander down to the Opera Cafe last night and see what he could see.
Of course, what he could see was the Saab 9-5 as well as a Spyker C8 being unloaded in preparation for the press conference and photo opportunities that came afterwards.
Here are Johan’s photos from that time (a great big thankyou to Johan is in order, too)

Saab sale – the Spyker press release

January 27, 2010 in News

Following is the complete Spyker press release concerning the acquisition of Saab Automobile from General Motors.

——

News Release

GENERAL MOTORS AND SPYKER CARS REACH AGREEMENT ON SAAB

  • GM and Spyker Cars announce a binding agreement over the transfer of ownership
  • of Saab
  • Terms are agreed and the deal is expected to close in February
  • Saab’s future as an independent company is secured
  • Saab will exit the orderly wind-down process
  • Spyker shareholders will restructure at closure of the deal
  • Swedish Government issues guarantee in favour of EIB

ZEEWOLDE, The Netherlands (26 January, 2010) – General Motors Company and Spyker Cars N.V, today confirmed the details of a binding agreement over the transfer of ownership of Saab Automobile AB of Trollhättan, Sweden. The transaction is expected to close in February and Saab Automobile will exit the orderly wind down process in line with that timetable.

The transaction will be accomplished as follows:

Spyker acquires from Saab Automobile Investering AB, a subsidiary of General Motors (“GM”), all the issued and outstanding ordinary shares in the capital of Saab Automobile A.B. (“Saab”) for a consideration of USD 74 million (“Purchase Price”).

The Purchase Price will be paid in two instalments. The first instalment of USD 50 million will be paid on the date of completion of the transaction, expected to take place on or before February 15, 2010 (“the Closing”). The second instalment of USD 24 million will be paid on July 15, 2010.

The Share Purchase Agreement is subject to the execution of a EUR 400 million loan agreement between Saab and the European Investment Bank (“EIB”), guaranteed by the Swedish Government. Today, the Swedish government announced approval of this guarantee. The guarantee is subject to approval by the European Commission, which is expected shortly.

Upon completion of the transaction GM will retain redeemable preference shares of USD 326 million. The preference shares represent less than 1% of the voting rights in the capital of Saab. The mandatory redemption date is 31 December 2016 and Saab has the right to request voluntary redemption at any time prior to this date. The preference shares carry a dividend entitlement of 6% starting from January 2012, increasing to 12% as from July 1, 2014. The dividend over 2012 will be added to the principal, but as from January 1, 2013 the dividend is payable in cash. Should Saab have insufficient distributable reserves to pay the cash dividend it will be added to principal increased with a penalty factor.

In order to allow Saab to operate on a stand-alone basis outside GM, Saab and GM will enter into a number of ancillary agreements. As part of the transaction, Spyker intends to negotiate the acquisition of all the outstanding shares in Saab Great Britain Limited, the UK distribution, marketing and sales company for Saab from General Motors UK Limited.

Spyker will issue a corporate guarantee not exceeding USD 10 million for Saab’s obligations to and for the benefit of the financing company GMAC.

Spyker will as soon as practically possible convene a general meeting of shareholders to approve the transaction. Spyker obtained irrevocable voting undertakings to vote in favour of the transaction representing the voting majority of its current shareholders.

It is the intention to change the name of Spyker Cars N.V. at that general meeting of shareholders to Saab Spyker Automobiles N.V.

As back-up financing, Spyker entered into a EUR 150 million Equity Credit Line Facility with GEM Global Yield Fund Limited (“GEM”) for a term of 3 years. According to this facility, Spyker may issue shares to GEM at 90 per cent of the volume weighted average price of the shares over a period of 15 trading days following a draw down notice sent to GEM by Spyker. In relation to the GEM facility, Spyker has issued to GEM share warrants in respect of 1,570,000 ordinary shares at an exercise price of EUR 4 per ordinary share. The warrants have a 5 year term.

The object of acquisition

In spite of media reports that certain parts have already been sold off, the object is Saab as a complete entity and going concern with all IP rights, trademarks, facilities and other
infrastructures. The sale of pre 2003 Saab 9-3 and current Saab 9-5 technology to BAIC in December 2009 did not result in any part of Saab’s business being divested or devalued. On the contrary, Saab has already started the production of the new generation Saab 9-5 in Trollhättan.

Both Saab management and Saab GB management prepared an estimated balance sheet as at 31 December 2009 for the purpose of this transaction. These estimated balance sheets are still subject to final account closing and audit procedures.

Spyker Cars does not yet have a balance sheet as at 31 December 2009 ready for reporting purposes. As such, it would be premature to show a pro-forma combined balance sheet for Spyker, Saab and Saab GB as at 31 December 2009.

Therefore Spyker only disclose an indicative combined balance sheet of Saab and Saab GB as at Closing date based on the estimated balance sheets for both entities as at 31 December 2009, adjusted for the impact of the transaction items as at Closing date.

It should be noted that the indicative closing balance sheet is based on the latest estimated balance sheets of both entities by Saab and Saab GB management which are subject to final closing and audit procedures and therefore subject to change, and does not reflect any potential fair value or purchase price allocation adjustments. The indicative closing balance sheet should therefore not be considered as the actual closing balance sheet, but only as an indication for the assets and liabilities to be acquired at closing date.

Saab’s and Saab GB’s combined revenue amounted to some EUR 1.0 billion in 2009 (2008: EUR 1.6 billion). Earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation amounted to EUR 0.4 billion negative in 2009 (2008: EUR 0.3 billion negative). In 2009 Saab sold 39.903 cars and produced 20.791 cars versus selling 94.751 cars in 2008 and producing 89.086 cars.

RESTRUCTURING AND MANAGEMENT BUY-OUT

As from Closing of the Saab acquisition, the ownership structure of Spyker will change as follows:

Tenaci Capital B.V. (“Tenaci”), a company wholly owned by Mr. V.R. Muller has made a successful bid on Mr. V. Antonov’s current shareholding in Spyker consisting of 4.6 million ordinary shares. As agreed in 2007, when Mr V. Antonov acquired his shares in Spyker, Mr. V. Antonov will cause the transfer of the priority share to Spyker if and when he would dispose of his shareholding. A resolution to cancel the priority share will be proposed at the upcoming EGM.

Messrs. N. Stancikas, M. Bondars and Mr. V. Antonov will retire as members of Spyker’s Supervisory Board effective as per the date of Closing.

Tenaci will grant to Spyker two loans. One for an amount of USD 25 million towards payment of part of the Purchase Price for Saab upon completion of the transaction. A second loan for an amount of EUR 57 million for repayment of all of Spyker’s current outstanding loans to banks and other financial institutions controlled directly, or indirectly by Mr. V. Antonov. This loan mirrors the existing terms (including the lender’s right to convert EUR 9.5 million into ordinary shares at a conversion price of EUR 4.00 per share).

The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale are not being disclosed at this time.

Victor R. Muller, Spyker’s CEO, stated: “We are very much looking forward to being part of the next chapter in Saab’s illustrious history. Saab is an iconic brand that we are honoured to shepherd. We are delighted to have secured the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of loyal Saab employees, suppliers and dealers and to have given reassurance to the 1.5 million Saab drivers and enthusiasts around the world. It was breathtaking to see so much support from the global Saab community over the last months which not only shows the strength of the brand but also helped us in our relentless determination to get the deal done.”

“Spyker Cars will provide Saab with the backing required to compete as a competitive global brand along with an entrepreneurial leadership team sensitive to the uniqueness, heritage and individuality of the Saab brand. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Vladimir Antonov for his formidable support during the past two years. His contribution has allowed Spyker to get to the point that this transaction was made possible. I also want to extend my gratitude to Messrs. Stancikas and Bondars as Members of the Supervisory Board. They have made very valuable contributions to our company during their respective terms.”

“Finally I would like to thank the Swedish Government for its constant support for our efforts culminating in granting the Guarantee in favour of the European Investment Bank today for an EUR 400 Million loan to Saab which we hope to secure in the coming weeks.”

Jan Åke Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB said: “It has been a challenging 15 months for Saab but our global organization has shown a fighting spirit that will serve us well going forward. The agreement with Spyker Cars has secured Saab’s future and will enable us to maximize the brand’s potential through an exciting new product line-up with a distinctly Saab character.”

“Today’s news is great for Saab’s customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe. The level of passion and support shown to Saab over recent months has been remarkable and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people who continued to believe that Saab deserved a future. Now we aim to get back to the execution of our business plan and with the continued support of our employees and business partners I am confident we will succeed.”

Nick Reilly, President GM Europe, added: “As a responsible corporate citizen in Europe, and throughout the entire period, GM has always had the hope to find a positive solution for Saab that would avoid a wind-down of the brand. We have worked very hard with many parties, including governments and investors, and I’m very pleased that we could come to such a positive conclusion that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker Cars on their way forward.”

A summary of the terms of the sale

January 27, 2010 in News

“Saab is an iconic brand. What we can bring to Saab is entrepreneurship and tenacity.” Victor Muller
It’s truly been a dramatic couple of months for Saab, GM and the various bidders for Saab, not to mention all of us on the sidelines observing, pleading and supporting. Truly astounding history, one that I wouldn’t have believed if it had not really happened.
So, one may ask, what actually did happen?
First of all, this is an agreement to sell. The actual sale will not take place until the European Investment Bank loans are in place for the guaranteed 400 million Euros (US$563 million) and the various government agencies and auditors have satisfied themselves that all things are in the right places. Additionally, as was previously reported here and in other outlets, Russian investor Vladimir Antonov’s 29 percent stake in Spyker must be bought out by Victor Muller’s investment company, Tenaci Capital BV. GM expects the deal to be complete in the middle of February.
Second, as I’ve said before in this process, the result for Saab isn’t exactly independence from General Motors, but a status more akin to a semi-autonomous joint venture than independent company. (By joint venture I mean a common undertaking, not necessarily any legal status.)
Why do I say that? As is being widely reported, the total selling price is right at US$500 million. The General gets about $74 million from Spyker and gets to keep about $100 million from Saab’s allocated operating capital, and the difference, about $326 million, is made up of preferred stock in the new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles. If we take the market value to be close to the selling price, General Motors still has a very, very large stake in Saab Spyker Automobiles. Upwards of half of the ownership, in fact. As such, GM still has a participating role in this new venture.
Additionally, Saab Spyker Automobiles will be one of GM’s largest customers. Since every current and future Saab relies upon drive train components made in other GM factories, Saab Spyker Automobiles will be buying those assemblies from GM for some time. In the case of the 9-4x, GM will be the manufacturer of the entire vehicle for distribution by Saab Spyker Automobiles. Saab Spyker needs GM and GM needs Saab Spyker.
Third, and this is strictly conjecture, I imagine that Saab Spyker Automobiles will still need the General Motors service network for at least the short term to serve the Saabs currently on the road. The dealer network will likely change as we saw previously with the KG plan, and Spyker will need GM dealers in the meantime to bridge the gap in service.
Fourth and finally, GM executive John Smith has said that there are “other considerations” due GM in this relationship. What that means, I’ve not a clue, but I suspect that there are non-compete provisions protecting specific GM markets and allowances for rights to Saab-developed technology that will be used in GM cars. There would likely be clauses to cover GM’s costs of dealer support and dealer terminations associated with the change in ownership.
It’s certainly a HUGE step in the right direction!! Great show, folks at Spyker and Saab!!

Thoughts on an extraordinary day – Saab is sold!

January 27, 2010 in Editorial

I’ll keep this short as I’m running on fumes right now…..
JAJandVM.jpg
That picture, above, pretty much sums up everything that we’ve been looking forward to over the last month or so – or the last 12 months, really.
A new owner for Saab Automobile, and Jan-Ake Jonsson taking up his rightful place as leader of Saab operations.
That image is a screenshot of the press conference given by JAJ and VM, which finished a short time ago. I apologise for not getting a link up on the front page, but I think most people are pretty familiar with news and links showing up in comments now :-)
I jumped in about 5 minutes into the press conference and even though my feed was a little broken up (thankyou, Australian infrastructure) it was a real heartwarming moment.
Victor Muller made a point of thanking all of the various parties involved with this deal, including Saab’s management team and employees, GM and the Swedish government. The part that moved me, however, was when he acknowledged the support of the enthusiast community and in particular, all the convoys that have been happening around the world.
Many people have been very kind to me in comments, but it was all of YOU who got out, printed signs, stood by your vehicles in the middle of winter and got the world to take notice of the support that’s there for the Saab brand.
This site, and the other Saab sites on the web, were happy to pass around the information, but it was the willingness of people like you to get out there and show your support in a tangible way that really made the difference.
——
We’ve stuck the boots into various parties over the last 12 months. Sometimes with good reason and sometimes a little over the top, but always with a good heart.
The Swedish government copped a reasonable amount of our collective frustration, but as acknowledged by Victor Muller, they rose to the occasion and have agreed to provide loan guarantees for the EIB loan.
General Motors were on the receiving end of not only our frustration, but of our emails and other messages as well. I’m still not a fan of the company, but today, all you can do is acknowledge the fact that after some real doubts about their intentions, they agreed to sell Saab. That’s what we needed them to do.
At the end of it all, the parties that needed to get together, managed to do so.
——
It never made any sense to me whatsoever that Saab should be closed down. Never.
The history. The philosophy. The future models. The plant. The management and staff. Those dedicated dealers. You could never look at all these factors and agree that Saab should be closed.
I’m happy for us as Saab fans that we’ve got a real shot at enjoying Saabs long into the future.
More than that, though, I’m happy that the people who fought so hard this year to ensure Saab’s survival have had their efforts vindicated.
Jan-Ake Jonsson and his management team took Saab through what I believe is the biggest corporate reconstruction in Sweden’s history. JAJ himself has been noted already by many people as a rock for this company – and rightly so.
Saab’s head Legal Counsel, Kristina Geers and her husband Eric, Saab’s PR guru. Both have probably had to completely re-learn their jobs in the last 12 months as the size and scope of their responsibilities grew dramatically. The rest of the PR and marketing team, including my own contacts Joe Oliver and Gunilla Gustavs, have had the heavy job of trying to answer the millions of questions that were fired their way. Imagine the loads on their shoulders.
Most of all, though, I’m just so incredibly happy for the people who design and build these fantastic automobiles. We’re all here because we’re Saab enthusiasts. It’s all about the cars and whilst these people will remain largely nameless and faceless to us as individuals, they’re the engine room of this company.
Personally speaking, I’ve visited Trollhattan twice now. I know that many of you reading this have been there many more times. I hope you share my affection for this beautiful small city. It’s out of this affection that my greatest happiness arises.
The knowledge that these good people have been through so much this last year and will now be rewarded for it brings the biggest smile to my face. I can’t wait to get back there.
——
Saab wouldn’t be sold if there wasn’t a buyer. Thankfully there were a number of potential buyers out there and I reckon Saab have done extraordinarily well landing Spyker and Victor Muller as new owners.
I think it’s probably OK for me to reveal now that I’ve been in touch with Victor Muller, pretty much on a daily basis, for around the last three weeks. Victor was open to this regular contact because whilst I couldn’t divulge any specific information from that, the regular updates allowed me to write from an educated perspective in order to keep enthusiasts filled in with the correct perspective.
I’d heard good things about Victor from people on the ground in Sweden, but I have to say that my respect for the man has grown exponentially in the last few weeks. His intellect, management skills and energy are absolutely phenomenal and I’ve got no doubt whatsoever that Saab are in a very capable set of hands.
His negotiation and securing of this transaction in just 6 or 7 weeks since first showing interest is a testament to him and his team.
Of course, one of the factors that kept Saab in the spotlight as a marketable brand was the fact that there were a number of energetic bidders in the mix and we all owe them a debt of gratitude as well. Without them, it would have been easier for GM to cut Saab off.
I’m pretty sure that the guys from the Koenigsegg Group will always have a welcome mat laid out for them in Trollhattan. They did so much of the hard work on this deal when they were in line to buy the company last year. I know from personal correspondence that they still harbour a great deal of affection for Saab, too, and hopefully there will be some outlets for that in the future.
We also had a guy who became our home-team bidder: CJ and his Merbanco team from Wyoming, USA. His energy and willingness to participate here at SU was greatly appreciated by all the regulars here and the insights he provided to the process in interviews and comments were invaluable.
The late arrival of people of the profile of Genii and Bernie Ecclestone also helped Saab’s cause and their interest was appreciated, too.
——
So Saab is sold.
We now have a new generation of vehicles to look forward to and new relationships between the company and its customers. We, as a community, have a responsibility of sorts, to do what we reasonably can to help ensure Saab’s survival and prosperity. Saab have an obligation, too, to design and build great Saab cars.
It’s going to be one heck of a ride.
OK, so it wasn’t so short after all…..

Saab sold to Spyker Cars

January 27, 2010 in News

VERY SPECIAL UPDATE BELOW

——

This is the news we’ve been waiting for!

The official release from General Motors:

——

GM Reaches Agreement to Sell Saab to Spyker

2010-01-26

DETROIT – General Motors and Spyker Cars NV today confirmed that they have reached a binding agreement on the purchase of Saab Automobile AB.

“Today’s announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide, and great news for GM,” said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.

“General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome,” Smith said.

As part of the agreement, Spyker intends to form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will carry the Saab brand forward. The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale will be disclosed in due time.

The Swedish government is at present reviewing the transaction and the related request for guarantees of a Saab Automobile loan that has been requested from the European Investment Bank. Assuming quick action, the transaction is expected to close in mid-February, and previously announced wind down activities at Saab will be immediately suspended, pending the close of the transaction.

“Throughout the negotiations, GM has always had the hope to find a solution for Saab that would avoid a wind down of the brand,” added Nick Reilly, president, GM Europe. “We’ve worked with many parties over the past year, including governments and investors, and I’m very pleased that we could come to such a good conclusion, one that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker on their way forward.”

——

VERY SPECIAL UPDATE

At 5:09 this morning, which is 19:09 in Stockholm, I received a phone call from Victor Muller.

He had literally just signed the paperwork and told me personally that Saab is sold. This was his first call after officially signing the papers to purchase Saab Automobile.

Victor was incredibly gracious, stating that the efforts of the site, and by extension, the Saab community, were absolutely mind-blowing (that’s a quote) and made the whole process that much easier.

Of course, I’m feeling incredibly humbled and somewhat chuffed by all that, but it’s a community thing. SU is a focal point, but it’s nothing without a company to write about or a community to carry it along.

Congratulations to all involved.

Press conference scheduled for 19:15

January 27, 2010 in News

I’ve just received a text message telling me that a press conference is due at 19:15 (Swedish time), which is around 90 minutes from now, as I write this.
One resourceful commenter (thx, Albert) has also left the following link, which is apparently a live link to a webcast where the announcement will appear at that time:
Link to webcast for Press conference.
I haven’t verified that link myself, but hopefully that’s correct. I’ll keep checking around. Apparently it’s all OK.
Griffin Up!!
UPDATE: Another live link, which will begin at 19:00 (tho the presser isn’t until 19:15)
——
Oh, and without getting too excited, the expected topic of the press conference is the sale of Saab Automobile by General Motors, to Spyker.
Ola Kinnander at Bloomberg, who is very well connected (hey, he’s hot my email :-) says the following:

General Motors Co. agreed to sell its Saab unit to Spyker Cars NV, the Dutch carmaker said today in an e-mailed statement.

But of course, the press release…..
——
Please feel free to photograph your very own celebratory Snoopy dance and send it in……
——
Not to be too premature, but I’m just soooooo very happy for Jan-Ake Jonsson, his management team and all the people at Saab in Trollhattan and around the world.
They’ve fought the good fight. They deserve this.
But of course, the press release……
——
The guys at MobilForum, Dresden – that is, the guys behind Rescue Saab – are starting a little early…..

Saab Sale Updates

January 26, 2010 in News

UPDATE:

“I can’t comment now, but there will definitely be an announcement later today,” says Spyker CEO Victor Muller to E24.

——

UPDATE:

Trading in Spyker shares has apparently been halted.

——

UPDATE:

Victor Muller, quoted by Reuters:

“Negotiations are ongoing and the spirit is positive, but we are very, very tired,” Spyker chief executive Victor Muller told Reuters while in Stockholm, where he is holding talks.

“It is such a complicated transaction. It’s not for no reason it has taken so long. It is extremely technical,” he said. “It can go either way, but you can rest assured we are doing everything to close the deal.”

——

UPDATE:

E24 have spoken to Jan Nygren, the former politician and Saab technology head honcho, who was one of the bidders along with Hakan Samuelsson.

Apparently he’s still willing to have a crack at Saab should the Spyker deal fall over.

I should add at this point that I got a quick message from Lars Carlstrom, point man for the Genii group, after their press release came out last night. He indicated that Genii were also willing to re-enter proceedings if Spyker cannot close the deal. If I can read between the lines, their concession yesterday was more about their own late entry, and a realisation that Spyker are the ones to get this done. It’s not that they can’t do it, but they were very late to the party.

UPDATE:

Dealer call for 13:00 today has been postponed.

UPDATE:

I love it when the Swedish press interview one another.

Robert Collin appears at Realtid.se, giving Kudos to all you Saab Support Convoy types, and other campaigners too, for letting GM know that shutting down Saab wasn’t going to be that easy.

——

UPDATE:

A freshly tanned Maud Olofsson says “we didn’t do it” about yesterday’s frenzy.

In E24….

Maud Olofsson would not confirm that the government decided to guarantee for a loan to Spyker. Nor does GM give any information.

- We have not updated us on the settlement and we have no settlement to present,” said GM Chairman Ed Whitacre in GM’s press conference in Detroit on Monday evening.

Any information about Saab’s fate came not from the government during Monday afternoon.

- One thing I have learned of the tours around this – it is not done until it is finished, “said Maud Olofsson

That last bit’s definitely true.

Ain’t over til it’s over.

So here we are again, waiting for the white smoke.

Dave R figured that the original red Keep Calm poster might be wearing off on people and forwarded this image.

Do as the lady says, please….

You can bet your bottom dollar no news services will be premature in calling it as ‘done’ today, eh?

It ain’t done until we see the press release.

I’ll keep updating this post with new news items as they come to hand, along with a little perspective where I can.

——

The first report of the day comes from Dagens Industri, who claim that things were all ready to sign when GM halted proceeding at the last minute in an attempt to squeeze a little more cash out.

To GM at a late stage re-addressing the funding issue can be in accordance with a DI-source due to the U.S. biljätten drive “an ugly game” to the very last attempt to bring up the price.

Whilst I’m no GM-fan, I don’t think this is correct (or the real meaning has been lost in translation).

We’re in the Stockholm phase now. The prices were most likely set before negotiation moved to here. This is about finalisation, IMHO.

We’re not over the line, but it’s close.

Australia Day Snippets

January 26, 2010 in Saabology

Here we go again…….

Happy Australia Day!!
Here’s Keka’s annual address on behalf of the lamb industry. I must confess, we’re having can-chicken tonight, so I’m feeling a little un-Australian myself.

Autospeed give you the low down on motoring journalism.

In fact, the vast majority of automotive journalism is either advertorial or straight entertainment… and yes, that includes the ‘tests’ and other stories which in any other journalistic field would be regarded as ‘hard news’ – and so would be written with a completely different regard for the facts.

True enough. Even the advent of the internet has failed to curb what Autospeed talk about here, as bigger automotive websites become more and more like their mainstream counterparts.
I don’t know of a viable solution, but it’s an interesting read nonetheless.

Peter De Lorenzo
gives you his personal low-down on the full-time appointment of Ed Whitacre as GM’s CEO.
In his own words, it’s a big bowl of “not good”.

Saab Support Convoys of One

January 26, 2010 in Saabology

It’s very encouraging to see the solidarity of people who wanted to be part of a Saab Support Convoy, but for whatever reasons couldn’t do so.
Count me as one of them, actually.

There aren’t many Saabs in Saudi Arabia, so for Motasim, a convoy of one seemed the only choice.

A guy we know around here as “100% Saab” got some signage out and went to keep some lonely Saabs on the local lot company in Lubbock, Texas.

And finally, a friend named Hashoo applied some Save Saab livery to his 9-3 Sportcombi in Bucharest, Romania.

I’m sure there are a great deal more of us who wish we could have been part of the Saab Support Convoys. I’m one of those people.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the resources to post everyone’s shot, so whilst we can definitely acknowledge what I’m sure would be many many convoys-of-one out there, please refrain from sending in your images.

Saab Support Convoy of a different kind? Ski weekend in Switzerland

January 26, 2010 in Saabology

We’ve all recently heard about the Saab Support Convoy in Interlaken, Switzerland, and the great show of support they had there.
I’ve just heard about another one – kind of. It is a regular event organised by Saab Switzerland but I’m sure that this year, it had a Saab Support Convoy type of feel to it.
The event was a ski weekend at Grindlewald, attended by around 1,000 people!
Andreas V tells me that there was definitely a lot of affection for Saab amongst those on the slopes and the whole affair was a great demonstration of people’s love for the brand.

January 26, 2010 in Saabology

Before I get to the new convoys…..
I’ve received an update from the organisers of the Saab Support Convoy in Thailand, stating that they have already received 36 registrations for the event.
They were expecting around 20, so this is a fantastic result for them. Congratulations and enjoy the day!
——
There was a Saab Support Convoy in Tokyo over the weekend.
Details have been scarce, but as you can see from the details posted on Twitter, there were 29 Saabs in attendance and one vehicle of another brand in support.

I’ve received advice that there will be a Saab Support Convoy in Israel on the 29th January.
I don’t have details as to locations, etc, but there is apparently a post about the event on the Israeli Saab Club web forum.
I assume those who are candidates to attend will know where that’s located and how to get the details.
