Steve C has provided some details from the event…..

  • There were a minimum of 52 cars at the end point, at Liberty State Park
  • Could have been as many as 80 that participated through different parts of the day’s program
  • There were a couple of 96′s (at least one a two-stroke), one 900 SPG, one or two 9-7X’s and a few NG900′s, at least one 9000 and the rest were current generation 9-3s or 9-5s.
  • Lady Liberty was hidden away in the photos by poor weather.
  • Park police were in attendance, but were cool.
  • A good time was had by all.

I’ll post more images and details as they come to hand.

SvD sum up the Saab sale situation

January 25, 2010 in News

‘Perry’ posted this article from Svenska Dagbladet in comments this morning (well, it’s morning for me) and from my reading, it seems to sum up the situation pretty well.

To sum it up: We’re very close, but stay cautious.

This is still a very big deal, with high-level government involvement and lots of contracts to sort out and sign. The words ‘cautiously optimistic’ seem to be the right ones.

Close to an answer/(clearance?) on Spykers Saab purchase
Published: 24 January 2010, 19.10.
Last Modified: January 24, 2010, 19:24

Saab affair between Spyker Cars and GM are now close, said several people to SvD Näringsliv. Spykers CEO Victor Muller, representatives from GM and the Swedish government has met in Stockholm this weekend. One answer may come on Monday.

Victor Muller, who arrived in Stockholm on Friday, is unusually quiet.

- Probably, a statement tomorrow (read ‘on Monday’, reds. Note.) Regarding a possible business,” he told SvD Business on Sunday. But because the Spyker is listed on the stockmarket, he can not say more than that now that negotiations are in the final stages.

A person with good insight into the process has also been informed that a deal is very close and may be published on Monday or early next week.

According to news agency Bloomberg, Spyker have made a bid of around Bloomberg GM is pleased with the offer. The funding is resolved, said sources of SVT’s Rapport. Spykers CEO Victor Muller will have found a secret financier accepted by GM.

Meanwhile, the two liquidators, that is, the two lawyers entrusted to close Saab, had been ordered not to start work, according to the Svenska Dagbladet Näringsliv.

The government’s chief negotiator Joran Hagglund (C) during the weekend met Victor Muller and representatives from GM.

- They want to be updated on the situation and we have gone through with them what it looks like the handling of negotiations with us and the Debt Office. GM wants to feel comfortable with it moving forward even on that side, “said Joran Hagglund.

Hagglund, who has had good insight int the SAAB sale in the past year, has never sounded particularly hopeful that a deal is to succeed to go through, but rather pointed to the numerous obstacles. But now he seems considerably more confident that a deal is close.

- It has moved forward in a way that allows one to be realistic optimist. With the changes that have occurred in the business case over time so it would be extremely positive if it became a closed deal, he says, but points out that there have been previous situations where many people have thought that everything was ready, but since GM has decided to discontinue .

Even Joran Hagglund has been informed that a decision on a closed business deal can be published on Monday, or early in the week. But he is also critical of the timeframe.

- There is really only GM who can answer exactly when we may know something. We’ve said repeatedly that the date might be something, but then there’s something that makes it not so.

According to Joran Hagglund is the GM representatives who are currently located in Stockholm in favor of the deal. But he stresses that it is GM’s top management, which ultimately should feel comfortable having an affair.

He also says that there is a lot of agreement to be signed between GM and Saab, Spyker, which will keep for many years to come, including how to share technology and intellectual property.

- A general purchase agreement is that which is least problematic, he says.

And once again, the ball seems to have ended up with the government. The EIB loan of EUR 400 million that were on the Koenigsegg Group time is left. But a condition of loan is that it is moving in with government guarantees.

- As we understand Victor Muller thinks that it is very important that the loan is included in Saab’s development, says Joran Hagglund and he assumes that Spyker may EIB loan.

Right now work is under way in parallel with both the EIB, the Debt Office and the European Commission to make assessments of Spykers business arrangement, according to Joran Hagglund.

- You want to see that there are no major changes and that there is a financial strength of Spyker, which makes a loan can be granted.

Debt Office makes the Swedish government’s part to assess that there is adequate collateral to allow them to recommend the government to grant a guarantee.

- So far as we are to decide if we want to give Spyker government guarantee or not.

Would you do that?

- It is part of the work going on right now. And the sooner we know the details of the deal and whether it has influence or not on the presentation, the sooner we can also handle such a request for a government guarantee.

Joran Hagglund admits that the deal right now, once again, largely depends on the government.

The convoy topic can be found at http://www.saab-scot.com/board/question.asp?QID=11985. Upcoming events will be updated later; however, most of the topic are in Thai language.

Saab Support Convoy – Singapore – DONE!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

The breadth of these convoys is just fantastic. I’ve enjoyed watching the reports and photos come in from place after place.
Last week it was primarily from Europe and Australia, with a bit of Asia as well. This week it’s mostly North America, with a bit more Asia thrown in for good measure.
These photos are from the Saab Support Convoy in Singapore, where there were 25 Saabs in attendance, accompanies by an Audi, one Porsche, two Opels and an Alfa Romeo (Alfa UP, baby!).
I have a few images below, but there’s a whole album full at this link. Thanks to CHTay for the update and congratulations to all who attended in Singapore.

Saab Support Convoy – Shanghai #2 – DONE!!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s another one I didn’t know was happening.
Not content with just one SSC, Saab owners in Shanghai decided to get together for a second time. Last time they assembled was in the evening, so it made for difficult conditions for good photos.
This latest meeting is good for us as it allowed them to get some daylight photos this time. It always good to make out the faces of those you’d like to thank for coming out and showing their support.
It just highlights the point that Eggs made last week – this thing is worldwide and it’s like Saab speaks all languages. It’s fantastic!
Kudos to the guys and girls in Shanghai, and thanks to KT for sending in the photos (again!)

News is coming through from several Saab Support Convoys that have been conducted today. Singapore, Toronto, North Carolina and Paris have all gone well.
For now, though, it’s the SSC attendees in Denver, Colorado, who have added to the global village of Saab Support, with over 60 Saabs turning up on the western steps of the capitol building in Denver.
SSC-Denver.jpg
I’ll get a more complete group of images up shortly, but for now, there’s plenty of them both on Facebook, and on Picasa.
Congratulations to all the Denver Saab owners and the Rocky Mountain Saab Club for their support of this event!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

The North Carolina Saab Support Convoy has been run and done, with a small but committed group of Saabers in attendance.
Chris, Bob, Mark and Seth enjoyed a nice drive from the airport to the capital and of course, had their Save Saab signs out to show the reason for the get together.
More photos on Facebook – here and here.
Congratulations to all the guys on being part of the global convoy!

Saab Support Convoy – Toronto – DONE!!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

The Saab Support Convoy in Toronto, Canada, is run and done, with a great turnout of 57 vehicles and more people in attendance.
The cars first assembled at Aktive Motors, a Saab specialist workshop and supporter of the event, and then moved on to GM’s Oshawa plant for a photo shoot.
I’ve heard there were cars from as far away as Viagra Niagara Falls and even a New Jersey plate in there, so kudos to everyone who came along for the fun.
Photos are from SaabScott, head honcho over at the Saab Club of Canada. More photos available at Photobucket.

Spyker infiltrating the Saab Museum?

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

Upon reeflection, that’s got to be just about the worst headline I’ve ever written. Stupid.
Should have been Djup Strupe: Spyker Arrives at Saab Museum.
——
We will need to see some documented evidence on this one – just as a matter of procedure – but the email and the accompanying comment here on the site was very interesting.
Via email, from ‘Swedish Grace’

Was just on the phone with my dad, who had very interesting news! A Spyker car has been delivered to the SAAB museum in Trollhattan!

Grace (not her real name, obviously) tells me her Dad works for Saab in Trollhattan, hence the news coming from him.
You might recall that several important events in the last year have been conducted at the Saab Museum and it’d make sense that an important announcement like this one would take place there, too.
Of course, a nice combination of Saab and Spyker vehicles in the background would be very appropriate.
Bottom line – Can’t confirm, but sounds feasible and sounds good.

Saab Support Convoy – Portugal – DONE!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s another one of those convoys that caught me off guard because I didn’t know it was happening prior to getting the email.

One of my old friends from this site, Jose G, got together with a few of his friends from the Saab Clube Portugal and whilst they were placard-free, they did gather with Saab Support on their minds, some custom artwork and, of course, a lineup of beautiful Saabs – which is all you need.

Saab Support Convoy – Paris – DONE!

January 24, 2010 in Saabology

The Saab Support Convoy in Paris has been run and done. The vehicle count from David M was 114 vehicles with more than 250 people in attendance.

The weather was somewhat grey but that didn’t stop people from turning out in good spirits to entertain the assembled press (from which, there was apparently quite a reasonable posse).

Congratulations to the French SSC attendees, and Griffin Up!

Images of the Saab Support Convoy – Trollhattan

January 23, 2010 in Saabology

I received some great images from a guy named Thilo Bubek this week.
Thilo runs his own photographic business – Bubek Fotodesign – and he’s very kindly passed along these photos from the Saab Support Convoy last weekend.
My thanks to Thilo. As today’s convoys get underway, please enjoy these ones as well. Images are from the public rally, as well as images taken inside the museum before it got all mega-crowded).

Save Saab, the Haitian earthquake and rescheduled corporate shareholder meetings

January 23, 2010 in Editorial

Reading through my Tweets today, I was struck by something that I’d known, but I was unsure if I’d really felt before.
There it was, plain as day: Save Saab, the Haitian earthquake and a rescheduled corporate shareholder meeting for a company that I’d never heard of.
Naturally, you may ask yourself: what do these things have in common? Why did this set of seemingly unrelated items make things “plain”? The answer: they all indicated how the power of internet communication have given common people a voice they’ve not had before. We the people now have an impact that previously was diluted with the distances that separate us physically, linguistically and economically.

UPDATE – Saab Support Convoy in Denver CO

January 23, 2010 in Saabology

Further to my previous updates (Nth Carolina, New York, Chicago), there’s an update in from the Denver SSC.
——
Here’s an update on the Denver rally, scheduled for Saturday morning.
In addition the Saabers attending (at least one person is driving up from Texas to join us!), a representative from the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association and at least 4 CO State Legislators will be on hand!
We’re expecting very good coverage by the media, at least one TV station has confirmed they’ll be there. Given the legislative presence, I expect even more media.
Andy
As a reminder, we’re meeting at Mile Hi Body Shop, 519 Lipan St, Denver, CO at 10am.
At 10:40, we’ll convoy to the State Capitol (200 E. Colfax Ave, entering from 14th Ave). We’ll arrange the cars on the west side rotunda parking area, and have presentations from the west Capitol steps.
For last minute info contact either Jerry Danner 303-910-5520 or Andy Malkiel 303-638-9206.
