Saab sold to Spyker Cars

VERY SPECIAL UPDATE BELOW
——
This is the news we’ve been waiting for!
The official release from General Motors:
——
GM Reaches Agreement to Sell Saab to Spyker
2010-01-26
DETROIT – General Motors and Spyker Cars NV today confirmed that they have reached a binding agreement on the purchase of Saab Automobile AB.
“Today’s announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide, and great news for GM,” said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.
“General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome,” Smith said.
As part of the agreement, Spyker intends to form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will carry the Saab brand forward. The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale will be disclosed in due time.
The Swedish government is at present reviewing the transaction and the related request for guarantees of a Saab Automobile loan that has been requested from the European Investment Bank. Assuming quick action, the transaction is expected to close in mid-February, and previously announced wind down activities at Saab will be immediately suspended, pending the close of the transaction.
“Throughout the negotiations, GM has always had the hope to find a solution for Saab that would avoid a wind down of the brand,” added Nick Reilly, president, GM Europe. “We’ve worked with many parties over the past year, including governments and investors, and I’m very pleased that we could come to such a good conclusion, one that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker on their way forward.”
——
VERY SPECIAL UPDATE
At 5:09 this morning, which is 19:09 in Stockholm, I received a phone call from Victor Muller.
He had literally just signed the paperwork and told me personally that Saab is sold. This was his first call after officially signing the papers to purchase Saab Automobile.
Victor was incredibly gracious, stating that the efforts of the site, and by extension, the Saab community, were absolutely mind-blowing (that’s a quote) and made the whole process that much easier.
Of course, I’m feeling incredibly humbled and somewhat chuffed by all that, but it’s a community thing. SU is a focal point, but it’s nothing without a company to write about or a community to carry it along.
Congratulations to all involved.

GREAT NEWS!
Now, perhaps Saab can use all this media attention to get the new 9-5 in front of the media for a lot of free advertising.
And then, in a few months, a clever ad campaign something like
“The reports of our death were greatly exaggerated. We are still here and would like to introduce you to the new 9-5.”

82 Mats January 27, 2010 at 5:17 am

Steven Wade, a true hero and recognized by his endless effort by V Muller in his very first call after the signature of the contract.
Be proud of yourself and please activate the paypal button again to get some well deserved additions to your funds (and to share with your family).
I would also like to put forward a wish to Mr Muller to send a NG 9-5 to Steven with a big sticker on the side saying “SAAB SAVED”.

180 aeronaut January 27, 2010 at 5:31 am

Good morning. Less than an hour ago, aircraft from here and others from around the world have returned from the largest aero battle in the history of saabkind. “Saabkind.” That word should have special meaning for all of us today. We have stood (saabs)united in our passion and common interest and we have once again have been fighting for our freedom… Not from GM tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We have fought for our right to live. To exist. And today we have won the day, the 26th of January will no longer be just an ordinary day, but as the day the Saab world declared in one voice: “We did not go quietly into the night!” We did not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!
[crowd cheers]
[crowd cheers: spyker, spyker]
long live saab

I can hardly believe it. After all this time, we’ve finally reached the finish line. Or the starting line, if you prefer. The next phase will be just as intense, but that’s for tomorrow. Tonight is a celebration!
Thank you, Victor! Thank you, Swade! You are heroes!
How about some appropriately Swedish celebration music?
This is a very Swedish folk song by the group Kraja about how important it is to drink and celebrate! Swedish folk music always has very nice melodies and harmonies, but in my opinion it often gets a little too melancholy. On those occasions when the folk sound is combined with a more uptempo rhythm, it gets really good!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYvVftvf1y8
Or perhaps something more modern? This is a quite brilliant new song by rising star Amanda Jensen, with a very suitable title for tonight – Happyland!

Gosh, usually my hubs comments here from time to time, I just read and smile, very touched by this amazing community and especially by you, Mr. Wade, whose enthusiasm and sheer passion and common sense, restored a bit my knackered faith in the human beings. ;-) And you surely deserved that first call.
I am so very happy to finally see black on white that Saab is saved! I can’t believe it, really, dreams DO come true.
And don’t feel ashamed for making a pregnant woman cry – it’s just happiness and hormones. :-D
Well done, Mr. Wade and Mr. Muller! We owe you both big time. Now, time to get a GM-free Saab, ain’t it?!

Victor – if you get around to reading these comments: You personify Spyker’s motto. Please bring the same tenacity to the Saab business and this will be a success.
I am tempted to apply to re-join the Saab I left 15 years ago when I got frustrated with GM.
Cheers. (Misty-eyed with a glass of champagne)

251 Hansjoerg January 27, 2010 at 5:42 am

SWADE! You have really done a marvelous job in channeling the interests of all SAAB stakeholders up to the ultimate goal. A masterpiece of modern journalism!! It was great to be an active part in som way.

252 aizzo January 27, 2010 at 5:42 am

I’m speechless, what a great day for SAAB. It’s impossible to know how this all might have turned out without the efforts of Swade, this sight, and all the support of the SAAB community. I can’t express enough thanks to Swade for his tireless effort keeping us all motivated and updated. And a big thanks to VM too, for of course without him, his efforts, and the efforts of all at Spyker, this day would not have come!
I think a nod of thanks needs to also be given to GM, for actually stepping up and doing the right thing and selling SAAB.
Now, when are the Saab Saved convoys going to happen? :-)
Griffin Up!

253 Nicke January 27, 2010 at 5:43 am

his is fantastic! This is one of the happiest days of my life!
Truly believe that this will be really good for Saab.
Hope that SAAB / Spyker realize the potential of Swade and hires him directly. He has probably managed to influence giant GM with the whole “save saab ‘thing which says a lot about his passion for Saab, and for his incredible fighting spirit.

Finally! Might have to crack open some Champagne I was saving for this!
On a side note, Jalopnik is having a vote for vehicles they get to add to the Forza Motorsport videogame today, and the 900 Turbo is on the voting list (List number 6 of 6). The 99 Turbo didn’t make the first cut yesterday. I think we should vote the 900 in celebration of today’s events. At least get it through this first round. You can vote for 10 of the 20 cars. I voted only for the 900 to better its chances.
SAAB UP!

262 Emil January 27, 2010 at 5:45 am

On my way home from the plant tonight, the radio reported the deal was done, but quickly added “no confirmation from GM yet”. As I came home, I turned on the computer and checked the GM Press page – nothing. A cup of coffee, a quick walk with the dog, another cup and a half later: there it was. I blinked twice, re-read but still couldn’t believe it. So I went to the planet’s only 100% trustworthy source of Saab related information… and was met by a huge SAAB SAVED. That’s when it it finally hit me: that the year of woes, false hopes and crushed dreams is finally behind us. My girlfriend asked what I was crying over, and with a big tear rolling down my cheek, in choked voice, I replied “it’s done”. Finally.
I just want to extend my gratitude to Swade and each and every one who has supported us throughout this struggle. Thanks for never giving up hope and your belief in us.
Thank you, Spyker. Thank you, all other parties interested in buying us. And thank you GM, for doing the right thing.
I’m going to go have a glass of Bruichladdich now, to celebrate. Now is when the future starts!

Thanks to SU, thanks to Spyker.. and thanks to GM.
SaabsUnited- A great place to be.. good people, good conversation! Thanks to all my new friends at SU for a great year filled with ups and downs!
Spyker- Simply wonderful!! Rest assured you have our continued support.
General Motors- Thanks for restoring my trust in GM. As a long time dedicated GM customer, I am thankful that you took the time to find the right buyer for Saab. I’ll continue to buy GM trucks, but I will only buy Saab cars!
a special thanks to Steven Wade… If it was not for your work here at SU, I would have been pretty much clueless about Saabs history as well as its future over the last year. You’re a true dedicated Saab enthusiast and one hell of a blogger! I am proud to call you a friend.
hip hip hooray!

280 Richard January 27, 2010 at 5:49 am

Thank you GM.
Thank you VM.
Thank you JAJ.
Thank you Saab.
And thank you Swade. I KNOW that you played a very significant role in how this decision went down. Of course it is the community that came together, but it is you Swade who linked these communities together through Saabs United. This site is without a doubt one of the reasons that Saab is alive. The message was delivered, Saab fans spoke out and GM heard. They heard us loud and clear and the best decision was made. The fact that VM called you first, personally, confirms everything I believe above. You are an outstanding ambassador for Saab, it’s ideals and the voice of our community.
Well done Steven. Hats off and glasses raised high to our beloved Saab and to you Steven. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

281 Tammi January 27, 2010 at 5:49 am

Well we’ve all been coming to this site for a while now and I really must say I can’t believe it…GM
really stressed everyone out.
God bless the people that put together this deal..it
will be great to see people not put out of work.
One important thing they can do right away is make the 9-3 diesel an option in the USA. We have mainly just the VW diesels for them to compete with.
Very exciting.

343 Laurens January 27, 2010 at 6:02 am

Fantastic news! I’ve been glued to SU for the last couple of months, this is a great outcome we all have been waiting for.
Thanks VM for this very bold step that, let’s be honest, not many people took very serious 1,5 month ago. Well done!!!
Thanks Saab workers for continuing building great cars under this uncertainty!
Thanks Swade, for hosting the no.1 Saab source out there!
Thanks Saab fans for the terrific international support in the last weeks!
Thanks Saab dealers for sticking in! (And especially those two Saab dealers that just opened doors in the Netherlands, even with all this uncertainty!)
And, certainly, THANKS GM for daring to go along as well!
Now it’s time to celebrate and champagne!
But tomorrow, it’s time to move on as never before! Build, innovate and… sell sell sell cars! Let’s make sure this is a permanent, not temporarily solution!!!
So to all SU fans, go ORDER THAT NEW SAAB NOW!!!! (I ordered a new 9-3 late 2009, with all the uncertainty, and expect to get it half March).
Enjoy!

Question to John Smith:
What has happened in terms of winding down. Where do things stand, what’s available and what may be delayed?
Answer: We have not been very long in the wind down process. Two weeks ago the wind down administrator was assigned. The liquidator was making preparations to wind down, but no wind down had occurred to date.
The plant is operating and building vehicles based on firm orders. Production is scheduled through the 29th, and plans are being made to continue beyond that.
Q: What will the ongoing relationship between Saab-Spyker and GM be:
A: Gm will provide powertrains and finished vehicles like the 9-4x for some time.

Q: Is the listed $74 and $326M in stock accurate?
A: Yes, there are also some additional considerations for GM.

Swade. Try to get info on how man orders for new saabs that are placed in the coming week or so…I hope we’ll see a good trend there.
From the conference: new 9-5 and 9-4x is included in the deal… warranties will be honored by both GM and SaabSpyker, alittle depending on markets but no gaps in the coverage of warranties etc…

388 mattlach January 27, 2010 at 6:17 am

Q: What was sold to China. Was the new 9-5 included?
A:The new 9-5 and 9-4x are very much a part of the deal.
Q: Who will handle Warranties?
A: This will depend ont he local market. GM will phase outr and Saab Spyker will phase in differently in different markets. There will be no lapse in covereage as warranties are concerned.
Q: What is the new 9-5 timing:
A: Some 9-5s are being built as we speak. True start of production will be in April / start of second quarter.

Wow!! what great news. Everyone should take a big bow and Swade in particular.
What is exciting about all this is how it has brought the Saab community together and made US realize how enthusiastic we are about Saab and how much we love our cars. We need to continue this spirit and enthusiasm. The more the world sees that Saab is a great car and a great brand with awesome history, the more we are validated and the more the value of the Saab brand and our cars.
I am also an early Porsche enthusiast and we need to tear a page from their book in the way of enhancing the brand, promoting owner participation and enthusiasm. Now I know that Porsche is a special case, but we use them as a model.
Lets all celebrate!!

421 mattlach January 27, 2010 at 6:24 am

Q: What took so long in completing this deal?
A: Saab is a iconic brand and also rather small. Most car companies ahve been very busy residing over their own restructuring efforts, and thus it is difficult for a new player to enter.
If we were back in 2006 or 2007 ina better economy this might have concluded much more quickly.

Q: There was some suggestion in Sweden that the reason for the delay was that GM did not want a strong Saab to compete with Opel in Europe. Is there any truth to this?
A: Not at all. The continued existence of Saab is positive for us as well as we can sell drivetrain components and vehicles.

Saabs United and all you supporters has given us,
at Saab, the energy to keep on working while waiting for the news that Saab is finally
going to be sold.
It has been a long journey with lots of ups and downs, and at times, when it felt hopeless, it was comforting to see all the support for Saab around the globe.
Today (26 Jan 2010), will for ever be a day in the Saab history to remember because Saab has been sold instead of being winded down.
Thank you all for your fantastic support for the survival of Saab.

This is great news, and I hope Saab can be successful going forward with their promising near future lineup. Although Saab-Spyker will be a small company, the continued relationship with GM should help them amortize costs, which will be important in keeping development costs manageable.
Also, Jalopnik is having a poll to decide the cars for a Forza Motorsport 3 car pack they are putting together. The 1993 Saab 900 Turbo is one of the cars up for voting (The 99 Turbo having been voted out yesterday) and to win it seems a lot of cars are getting alot of votes from their fans off Jalopnik, so Saab fans should vote in it too;

Today (26 Jan 2010), will for ever be a day in the Saab history to remember because Saab has been sold instead of being winded down.

Well done to all involved! Thank you Swade for all the time you put in SU. I wish Victor will offer you a major role in the new business and with your passion for SAAB, you transmit very well, it could be a very positive move for the company. You also have an excellent analytic profile.
Victor, Great work! I’m convinced if you have succeeded to negociate with GM, you will succeed to manage successfully the future of SAAB and we also feel your passion for SAAB. A lot of work is ahead to rebuild a company and an image. Good luck!
As SAAB fans and customers, it is our role to continue to show our passion and follow the media for the right messages.
I think all the efforts from the SAAB community over the last year will contribute to the success of the new saab-spyker company.
Thanks to GM for all your efforts. I’m quite sure they spent a lot of time in the deal with Kegg and Sypker.

You are welcome, Python!
Please tell all your fellow Saab employees in Trollhattan that we are so happy for you! I can’t imagine what it has been like for all of you this past year. I also can’t imagine the great good feeling you all must have today! It will be an exciting day tomorrow I am sure.

486 Alex Lammie January 27, 2010 at 6:44 am

Fabulous news. Well done Swade. You pulled together a very important group of people. I am not sure we would have this result without the power of the internet and people like yourself to keep the momentum and the pressure up. Well done to all – everyone has done their little bit in fighting the cause. What shall we save next? – oh and start saving the pennies, now is the time to put that deposit on the new SAAB. Victor has helped us keep our brand, let’s help him sell cars.

487 hilmar January 27, 2010 at 6:44 am

488 Happy SAAB owner January 27, 2010 at 6:44 am

Congratulations to all SAAB owners and Swade!
Swade, SAAB/Spyker would be smart to hire on you as an evangelist/rep in some fashion, I am so impressed with the way your organizational and motivational skills along with all the believers had a positive impact on this outcome.
btw – it’s amazing but after days of cloudiness, the sun finally came out here today as well!

Victor Muller and Steven Wade, I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. I had a “date” with my wife and promised myself that I would not check the situation from my mobile. After we departed my heart started pounding and then…a relief.
I am so happy for Saab, all its employees and us Saabistis. I was physically sick in the dec 18th and now…teary-eyed and feeling better than in a long long time.
We enthusiast can be enthrilled that our beloved brand now has a true enthusiast owner. Great things are bound to happen.
Than you my fellow ladies and gentlemen of Saabsunited – it

Finally! Tomorrow I’m going to the Saab dealer to swap the BMW for a Saab 9-3 SC. That’s a purchase I would’ve gone through with anyway. But these very good news will make the trip an even more enjoyable one. And I definitely feel more secure about the future both for existing SAAB owners and those becoming one.

513 Svizzera January 27, 2010 at 6:49 am

I would like to thank you Steven on behalf of Russian SaabCommunity.
Your efforts are worthy great respect and I’m sure that this will be very useful for you in the future!
You managed to unite different people from all over the world, you managed to erase borders and language barriers and this is great!!
As you have said already SU is nothing without our favourite cars, but I’d like to add that Saab is nothing without such outstanding people like you and Saabers that I “met” here, at SU.
Though it was a very long and dramatic story, now I can say that I’m even glad because these events have united us as we were one, one more player at VM’s side!
I think even if the end of this saga would be different, I think that all of us have already earned a lot!
We are really a Community, members of the Big Saab Family!
Thanks EnG for your efforts too!! Cheers mate!!
Thanks to CJ!
Thanks to VM for keeping his promises, and keep going!!
And of course Thanks to all Saab Enthusiast in the World!!! We are the Best!!
Best regards from Russia!!

This was taken last summer, in Sweden. This gentleman worked on the dashboard design for the new 9-5, we were hoping for Victory even then! I added the letters a few days ago, I’ve been saving it for this moment…
