Saab Support Convoy – Interlaken, Switzerland – DONE!

by Swade on January 25, 2010

Organisers of the Saab Support Convoy at Interlaken, Switzerland, should be pretty happy with the attendance. With the arrival of a group from St Gallen (Mmmmm, home of Hirsch) the numbers swelled up over the 90 vehicle mark.

Some early photos from Oliver H….

The Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars has now solved the financing for a takeover of Saab Automobile from General Motors (GM). It says sources of SVT’s Rapport.
The explanation for the breakthrough is that Spykers CEO Victor Muller has found a new secret financier accepted by GM. According Rapports sources can the deal be ready early next week.

Here is a full content of the article for all that can’t open the FT site:
GM closes in on sale of Saab to Spyker
By Andrew Ward in Stockholm and John Reed in London
Published: January 24 2010 15:30 | Last updated: January 24 2010 15:30
Saab Automobile is set to win a stay of execution from General Motors as the US carmaker closes in on a deal to sell its Swedish unit to Spyker Cars of the Netherlands.
Several people close to the negotiations said a provisional agreement could come as soon as Monday, bringing a halt to preparations by GM to close one of Sweden

24 SaabKen January 25, 2010 at 4:19 am

I’m still holding a very cautious optimism. But the signs are pointing in the right direction.
IIRC, the K-egg/GM “deal” appeared to have been publicly been more “finalized” back in Q3 2009, with all the motoring press subsequently publishing reports and even 2010 car buying guides that indicated Saab being SOLD to K-egg.
Therefore this time around, I’m not even sure when the exact moment the global Saab community can actually pop the champagne bottles corks without another imminent bomb-drop news of the deal falling through.

25 Svizzera January 25, 2010 at 4:19 am

I’ll believe in this only when I see the confirmation on the SU main page.
Swade, EnG where are you?

26 Viking Up! January 25, 2010 at 4:24 am

It will be VERY interesting to see who is ultimately financing the deal.
They have managed to keep that detail secret.

27 ralf22 January 25, 2010 at 4:30 am

Let’s keep calm and carry on. We’ll hear the news when time is right. (Very good reasons to be extremely cautious at the moment.)

28 theugly January 25, 2010 at 4:33 am

Happy to hear the good news on Saab. The delivered Spyker Car to Saab Museum will be used for PR photos.
Back to topic.
The Interlaken event was organized by Swiss Saab Club. Thanks to them.
They offered all the people tea, Hot dogs ;)
The parking was based on the models: pre 900-1, 900-1, 900-2/ 93-1/ 93-2, 9000, 95 and seperated an 97 5.3i :D
I would say there were 100 Saabs – more than on the germans and austrians Support Convoys.

Just in: DI.se: “Government offers guarantee for Saab-loan”. I can see some momentum building here. I do hope that announcements will only made public after they are non-breakable. That would give definite peace of mind for a lot of people, including potential carbuyers. Because well, we have seen that a binding stock-purchase agreement can be broken as well ;-)

33 Reier January 25, 2010 at 5:47 am

babelfish screws it up, maybe some dutch guy can translate this for us?
http://www.carros.nl/autonieuws/saab-support-convoy-groot-succes/

34 Perry January 25, 2010 at 6:03 am

The government says to GM in detroit last week: “It’s reasonable to assume there will be a state loan guarantee”
I get the word “benevolent” if I translate the headline. “The government is benevolent to a loan guarantee” I would say they are positive and eager to help. Which sounds very promising.

It was a great day today in Interlaken (Switzerland). Hope that the deal with Spyker will become real (I am still are a bit pesimistic, since pesimits are optimists with large experience).

37 miko January 25, 2010 at 6:26 am

You may read another article too and it’s as GM like get support from EU for their OPEL!! They took all best from SAAB and shut him down. It’s really nice to read that ( GM gears … )
I believe the Stryker will successfully close this deal. SAAB will be one from best brands over the world.

43 Josephine January 25, 2010 at 7:53 am

The time is drawing closer to the final stages of a very exciting Play in 4 acts…
Over the last weeks and months the tension has been building up, with many ups and downs and it is now moving to a grand finale, We still don’t know what the outcome will be, but what a wild and fascinating trip it is!
So many people have become personally involved, an international Saab community has grown out of the seeds of hope. And not only the Saab owners are now involved, many strong european investors have given their vote of confidence as well! It is good to hear that, allthough a competitor in the race, the Genii group with Bernie Ecclestone are supportive towards Spyker in their negotiations with GM. The support of traditional european investors and their trust in the long term prospectives for Saab must give a very positive signal to the European Investment Bank. The new business plan and new financier have already received the approval of GM, which means quite a lot, as Ed Whitacre needs guarantees carved in granit, with his intentions to pay back the US loan in shortest possible time. His track record in business shows that he is hard but fair, and he recognises a good business opportunity.
So let’s all hope for the best, keep calm and carry on!
2 more nights……

All: As mentioned weeks ago, this deal hinges (always has) on the Sweden Government. Let’s hope they do thier review and can support Spyker as the buyer. – comment partially edited and CJ contacted about this – SW

That 96 looks strange. Last year with the crome grille was 73. But the big turn indicator came on year model 78. Other details on the car tells me that it is an older car modified with newer turn indicators and rear lights. But why would anyone do that? The older ones look better. Very nice car anyway. Nice paint, beateful rims and nice stripes on the hood.

Hi Swade,
I don’t care much if you edit any of our comments, as you always have a good reason for doing so, but editing an comment from CJ really makes me curious.
I’m sure you made this in order to not jeoperdize what is now happening in Stockholm, but I would mind If you would give up your non-dependence from SAAB.
