I thought I’d give this one more run before the weekend….
——
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a special Saabs United discount in the house!!
The folks at Maptun were so pleased with the little Maptuner video I made the other day and the subsequent discussion around it that they’ve offered us a special discount.
For this week only, Saabs United readers can claim a 20% discount on any Maptun software upgrade.
What it covers:
- All Maptun software upgrades, whether it be diesel, Trionic 5, Trionic 7 or higher.
- Maptuners will be included where appropriate (diesel and T5 cars do an ECU exchange, all others get a Maptuner)
- Only available for orders placed directly at the Maptun website. Not applicable for agents.
What it doesn’t cover:
- Shipping
- Parts (you get the software at a discount, but if you also want an exhaust, air cleaner, etc, then those are at normal price)
How you get the discount:
When you place an order, there is a ‘message’ area as part of the order form. Simply write Saabs United in the ‘message’ area and they’ll apply your discount when they process your order.
Who is elegible?
- Anyone who orders a software upgrade before midnight GMT on Sunday 7th February, 2010.
- Anyone who’s ordered one earlier in the week (since I published the video) can contact Maptun and ask for the Saabs United discount on their software too.
A 20% discount is a generous offering and I’d like to thank Maptun for extending this offer to Saabs United readers.
Here’s the video again for those who missed it.

If only I could convince my wife to get one of these…
Sweet – if only the AUD hadn’t tanked today.
Amazing!
I just turned the computer on to order a upgrade for my 93 Aero ttid, but as usual I check SU first.
I wasnt sure if to go with Map Tun or BSR though.
Just made my mind up!
Thanks Swade and thanks Map Tun!
if only they had MapTun Software tuner for Saab 9-3 SS 2.2 TiD 125 HP (year 2003) …
if only they had MapTun Software tuner for Saab 9-3 SS 2.2 TiD 125 HP (year 2003) …
if only they had MapTun Software tuner for Saab 9-3 SS 2.2 TiD 125 HP (year 2003) …
The 2.2 TiD is unfortunately a very weak engine. It’s not worth tuning it, it will just break.
yeah, i know it is weak, but tuning can add approx. 30 HP and 55 Nm, so after this it wouldn’t be so weak anymore.
p.s.: my same posts can be deleted, sorry.
So if I order such a Stage 1 Maptuner for my
9-3 SS 2.0T Aero (2003), I will be able to tune and “detune” my Saabine how many times I like without any more costs than the “Stage 1-kit”-price (-20%) and shipping?
I think Fredrik was meaning “weak” as in not durable and robust enough to handle the upgrade as opposed to “weak” being underpowered alone…
correct?
Correct.
The Maptuner is matched to your VIN and you can go back forth from tuned to de-tuned as you please. Then there’s the other features as well (fault code reader, speed limiter, wheel size adjustment).
How about tune a brand new Saab? Should I wait or is it possible to tune it right from start?
Replying to fredrik’s reply to me in the earlier posting:
“Regarding the cable harness [for T7's]. Price is 200 SEK without tax.”
Do I note in the comments that I wish to purchase this cable harness?
I am in a situation similar to what Tobias is asking. The tuning software may need to come off in a hurry. However, I need the torque and any extra fuel economy that can be had. The vehicle is 6 months old and has 15,000 miles (24,140 kilometers) and things aren’t slowing down.
FWIW. I gave up flying Delta Airlines for flying SAAB.
Correct!
The engine has a higher failure rate than most other engines, even as standard.
We have lots of new customers with brand new cars who use our tuning software. If you want more power, go for it!
Correct, make a note of it in the message field and we’ll add it to your order!
Fredrik2: I’m interested in the maptuner device, but will I notice the difference at all with the 265hp kit (+15hp)? What is your recommendation for a 9-5 sc aero -04? (automatic transmission) What would be the maximum kit without having to change the exhaust etc.?
I have a 2000 9-3 2.0 turbo 185hp hatch and I thought I read that the Maptuner device was now available for this engine, but I did not see it on the web site when I looked a couple of days ago. Was I just looking in the wrong place?
The 9-5 Aero is a special case. While the top power won’t be raised that much, the torque increases from 350 nm to 420 nm. That’s where the big difference is, low- and mid-rpm’s.
The 9-5 Aero really needs to have its exhaust changed to boost the maximum power level in any significant way. With only software the biggest difference will be in the raised torque.
If you have the option to use E85 in your area, the BioPower Stage 1+ upgrade is really worth the money. Tons of torque and 25 bhp extra at the top.
The website is in the progress of being updated.
The Maptuner has been added to your model now!
http://www.maptun.se/tuningGuide.php?kategori=671&model=2342&listorder=28
Thanks! With the discount, that seems like a very good price. So, from what I see, the Stage 1 will essentially bring my 2000 9-3 2.0T 85hp up to similar specs for the comparable Viggen for that year. I suppose that would mean I would need to also upgrade my shocks and struts and get the steering rack brace to avoid Viggen-like handling issues with torque steer?
Decisions, decisions…
NG900 turbo very soon I hope and maptun stage 1 or 2 as soon as possible !
“Fault code reader”? Will that allow me to, say, figure out which one of my ABS sensors are failing on my 9000?
No, the diagnostic tool will only work with the car that the Maptuner is configured for.
I am just about going for MapTun, but still want to know:
What about the pumping issues that some have experienced with BSR and Nordic, ie reaching max pressure earlier and loosing torque, touchy ESP, gearbox issues, etc???
Also, anyone having any experience with Vtuner at
http://www.vtunersaabs.com
???
Anyways, many thanks to Fredrik and MapTun for your offer! Will likely order on Sunday…
he he, nothing beats the big grin on that first post-tune drive. Did it on my 9-5 Aero and have done it again on my 9-3 TTiD Aero (sorry guys, went BSR). No regrets, no impact on CO2 or fuel economy, just a big impact on the smile on my face.
Everything you mention is, of course,of legitimate concern. But I wouldn’t obsess! There are just so many variables at play (Automatic vs. manual for instance; driving style…).
There is considerable information — and unresolved debate! — at http://www.saabcentral.com (including my own partial attempt to distill the issues — as of summer ’09 –at http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155785).
I went VTuner for my Turbo X: It’s a ‘custom tune’ (where you download your stock tune…and email the engineer who in turn adjusts parameters according to fuel grade etc). VTune uses HPTuner software (that you purchase and download to a Windows-based notebook). It’s a slightly more aggressive tune than either of the Swedish (or Hirsch) options.
At the the time of my writing and purchase MapTun hadn’t released their handheld device (which seems to resemble BSRs with a few extra features). The 20% discount erodes the V Tuner Price advantage ($750.00 USD) so MapTun is now the less expensive (about $ 720.00 USD as best I can tell). I must say there is great convenience in being able to toss the ‘PPC’ into the glove compartment and then flash (or detune) as you require (before going into service, for instance, when you may wish to return to ‘stock’). It’s your call whether you value that convenience over a ‘custom tune’. There are happy campers from both camps (I’m not aware of any horror stories!).
For Stage 1(or VTuner’s Stage 0), I don’t think you need overly worry about the integrity of the transmission or engine (but I would adhere to a ‘severe service’ schedule — especially for the automatic fluids (complete PITA to change for Aisin 6 speed vehicles BTW!)).
will this 20% discount work if we order from the Maptun USA website?
Disregard my above comment…there is only 1 maputun website…i was getting thrown off by the Euro pricing but I see that you can switch pricing to USD. hmmm 115 additional for $858? Sounds like a great deal to me!
It looks like the North American Maptun retailer doesn’t exist anymore in the Maptun web site. Going to http://www.maptunusa.com still brings it up, though.
Which website should we go through when ordering in the US? I assume that the shipping cost is going to be less when we order from the North American retailer?
As stated in the post, the offer is only applicable to products ordered from http://www.maptun.com
The offer is really good but for EU citizens the 25% Swedish VAT adds a lot to the final price. US citizens can benefit from the VAT exemption.
Overseas buyers may not pay the VAT, but the shipping costs out of Sweden are also quite high – in my case, it would be about 10-15% of the cost of the product itself.
Have MapTun have forgotten about supporting their dealers who have invested time, money and marketing effort to promote their products. Maybe they need to sort out if they are direct or with dealers. Is this a form of monetising this site? Swade maybe you need to be a bit more transparent about your intentions and activities. Short term gain, long term pain.
Tony,
The movie was made because a friend of mine bought a Maptuner and I wanted to film him installing it.
The offer was made because the movie was well recieved and created some discussion.
As written in the post for the original showing of the film (click the ‘Maptuner video’ link in the post), Maptun didn’t ask me to make it and I do NOT benefit from them making this offer.
You can feel free to show that movie to potential clients of yours, by the way, and I won’t expect a fee from you, either.
The offer is really nice and Maptun deserves a big thankyou for their kind gesture, but….
Marketing-wise it would be absolutely fair for this discount to be extended to Maptun’s retailers as well and not only to be applicable for products ordered directly through maptun.com.
A manufacturer’s sales strategy should not beat the purpose of its retailers network existence. Otherwise this does not make any sense in the business world! Or does it?
Swade, this is a poorly designed marketing initiative that simply undermines the good efforts of MapTun’s loyal dealers/retailers. Pure and simple. It is my understanding that MapTun’s motives for sponsoring your site was an attempt to increase their USA penetration and visibility. Given that your largest audience appears to be out of the US. To be perfectly honest, the efforts of your site have delivered no perceived benefit to my business and, if anything, have simply confused MapTun’s sales strategy. So sorry, no fees forthcoming!
Ooops. Nearly forgot. You actually DID personally benefit. You received a free MapTun upgrade for the Monte Carlo as did a local buddy of your…….or am I mistaken?
MapTun is not the only company selling both through dealers and online. Promotions are not always applicable for both, either.
A dealer should be happy for every MapTun upgrade sold, as it could ultimately lead to a happy customer coming for the next stage, and the next…
Tony, Swade runs this website on his own time and is 101% entitled to place advertisements here to support this effort. He is also entitled to promote his sponsors and receive gifts from them or anyone else.
As all content here is free, advertising and donations are the only source of revenue for Swade’s enormous efforts. So please chill and take your complaint up with Maptun if you need.
Well said, Kroum.
I can understand the points of MapTun retailers, but it was MapTun that presented this offer at a blog that a lot of potential customers frequent. Any concerns are between MapTun and their retailers and I would think the retailers have a direct channel to make their concerns known to MapTun. This is not the place to hash out this issue.
For the record on this article:
“John didn’t get a free Maptuner. He’s a paying customer just like anyone else (and he didn’t even get the 20% off).”
This is per Swade at February 4, 2010 11:20 AM on this site’s time in Swade’s comment here:
http://www.saabsunited.com/2010/02/observed-fuel-economy-after-maptuner-stage-1-upgrade.html#comment-57871
Here’s another thing. The 20% off sale is this week only. This video, the sale, and a newer post on fuel economy with the upgrade are going to generate a lot of interest among potential buyers who aren’t going to make a purchase this week. I might be one of these future buyers.
So, there’s plenty of future business for the MapTun dealers that this video is helping to generate.
I understand the concern but I think over time everyone wins here. The market gets bigger and the early birds get 20% off.
I feel what’s being overlooked here is the fact that practices such as this only undermine the good work by a suppliers dealers. Furthermore, it also confuses the market about the suppliers sales strategy and sends the message that prospective customers can buy direct from thye supplier – 101 stuff really. You will get no argument from me about the marketing spin offs and visibility that such campaigns generate, it’s absolutely great for MapTun but questionable about the real benefits to the local dealers. The MapTun product is great product ( I should know since I have been selling it for around 6-8 years). However I will happily defer to seemingly greater experts in this field than me and will eagerly await the orders to flow and the tills ring!
Ken, yep your are correct as I also represent several other companies as well. However, the difference is that (again in my experience) the dealers are usually engaged in such campaigns and not on the periphery. And you are correct that such campaigns could lead to a happy customer coming for the next stage, and the next… I guess the operative word here is ‘could’. In my market and (in over 14 years of experience in Saab tuning) the popular upgrades are Stage 1 with very few customers converting up to higher stages. So a little wishful thinking here I feel. But thanks for your comments.
Hi MitchbSC. Hmmmm, Well he certainly didn’t order from a local retailer. Must have ordered direct. Maybe Swade took the cash with him to Sweden??
Paul, I don’t entirely disagree. However I have yet to see any perceivable difference to my bottom line. Maybe SU needs to recognise the MapTun regional dealers because its these dealers that are investing time, effort and money to promote and develop the MapTun markets over tha past 8 years or so.Like I say, I look forward to the tills ringing with orders…..
No argument from me Korum. SU is a great site and Swade does a great job of his own choosing. However I am also 101% entitled to protect my business and all of my time effort and money I have spent having introduced and MapTun into my region some 6-8 years ago when they had no presence and no profile. You may be pleased to know that I had already taken the matter up with MapTun. So now all there is to do is chill!
Tony,
For the second time, you’ve accused me of taking some sort of payment under the table for doing the video and publicising the sale that they’ve put on.
I’ve stated quite categorically in both the original video an in comments on this site that this is not the case.
To be blunt, you’re calling me a liar.
Now if you have a problem with the sale they’ve offered, I suggest you take it up with them. But coming here and making false accusations about me when I’m just trying to say a good word about a good product (one that you sell) is not on.
Steven, I haven’t accused you of anything nor have I called you a liar. You say you received no benefit yet you did receive a free upgrade. Tell me if I am missing something here??? Furthermore, it appears as though the offer as published on SU actually misrepresents the actual offer as made by MapTun and in respect of the dealers. So no false accusations from me I’m afraid. And, for the record, there has been no question of the quality of the product – explicit or implied. The MapTun product is very good. I guess I should know! Please feel free to email me directly or even call me if you still feel seemingly so aggrieved. BTW, I suggest you re-check the offer with MapTun!
Tony, we get it…stop talking trash to Swade…after all he did for us during the Saab convoys and you have the nerve to come on here and say the things you have been saying?
If it hadn’t been for this website there possibly wouldn’t be a Saab anymore.
If you have a problem talk to MapTun, this is not the place to do it.
Sorry Peter, but that’s just a tad strong and personal, not the way comments should go. I can fight my own battles. – SW
Am I analyzing the text too much? The discount only applies to software UPGRADES? Does this mean that if I am a new customer and buy a stage 1 that I will NOT get the 20% discount? Or am I wrong?
I’m pleased to say you are indeed wrong, Hector
Going from factory standard to Stage 1 (or higher) as a new customer is indeed classed as an upgrade and eligible for the 20% software discount.
Tobias,
Tuning a new Saab is possible, but you should be aware that applying an aftermarket tune could negatively impact your warranty.
Of course, with the Maptuner and other similar connectable tuners, you can download and save your factory tune before the applying the upgrade, so theoretically you could return it to factory standard prior to servicing. I’m unsure, however, whether or not your dealer can dig into your ECU and see that the files have been changed.
Most new Saab owners either wait until their warranty has expired, or go to Hirsch in Switzerland, as they do tuning that is factory backed and won’t affect your warranty at all.
I’m in the US and checked what I would actually have to pay to get Stage 1 for my Viggen. The price for the Maptuner is $790 (no VAT for overseas customers). The 20% off will bring that down to $632, so that really nice. However, the UPS shipping from Sweden is $114!, which brings the price of the whole deal up to $746.
I’m comparing this to the $670 that I would pay for a BSR PPC through Nick Taliaferro, the shipping costs within the US are pretty small.
I’m also really sympathizing with Tony (am I the only one?), it doesn’t sound right that MapTun is undercutting its own retailers. Moreover, I think that if large quantities are shipped to overseas retailers, then this would bring down these insane shipping costs from Sweden.
Thanks for the feedback on tuning a new Saab! I’m accually going to visit my local dealer on the upcoming monday to se if I can get a nice deal on a Saab 9-3 SS 1.8T!!!! I’m so excited!
Though I did not order a tuning device from Sweden, I can concur that shipping is draconian. I ordered a 5th gear and pinion from Speedparts in Uddevalla for my 01 9-5 Aero and paid R2,186 for the parts but coughed up R3,800 for the freight with DHL to Windhoek, Namibia. Grrr
Only 35,000 miles more left to drive on my 9-5 before I am out of the Saab USA warranty. ROAD TRIP!!
I wish Saab had the money to get Hirsch engine tuning certified in the U.S. At least that’s what a Saab rep told me in 2008. There are some US DOT tests they’d have to do.
Tony…baby…why the knickers in such a wad?
Steven has received NOTHING from MapTun. He has stated that over and over again. And yes, you ARE calling him a liar. Maybe in not so many words, but none the less
Tony,
Chill! Nobody on this site is getting swindled. I am getting a headache from your tone however. LOL
Another topic: Once again I was googling pictures off the 9-x and 9-x air. These cars are among the most beautifull in car-history. And very progressive; down-sized and eco-friendly.
I really think “the new Saab” ought to produce them as soon as possible!!! I find them a better statement for Saab then the Aero-X – and I am sure they could be selled as well!
Tony: May I point out that MapTun supports this site with advertising? Perhaps you could enjoy the same benefits if you’d have bought space here.
Your beef is with Maptun. Take your argument to them. If you are indeed a hard-charging dealer, I’m sure that they can remunerate you for any shipments into your local market. I know that I, as a sales manager for a multinational electronics firm, would do that for my loyal and hard-working channel partners.
Even if Swade got a unit for free in this deal it would still be on the up-and-up because this site has a mutually beneficial business relationship with Maptun and other quality advertisers. A relationship that, I may add, benefits you by driving business for you as a Maptun dealer.
Once again, if Maptun elects to have a dual-channel selling strategy that you dislike, your disagreement is with them, not Swade and SU.
Some people have suggested that SU or something like it should be part of a new Saab Internet strategy. In theory a good idea but I have to say that some of the posts on this thread demonstrate why manufacturers don’t have such blogs/forums. Having this sort of moaning and bitching associated with your brand isn’t good. SU almost always provides excellent editoral, comment and discussions and needs to remain that way. Don’t spoil Swade’s hard work and reputation.
20% or no, there are Maptun dealers in the US?!
Tony,
The Maptun ECU I have in my car is an evaluation unit they gave me to test. My car has a Hirsch badge on it and my Hirsch ECU will go back into the car, to be matched to the exhaust I’ve got coming from Hirsch as well. So no, there’s no free upgrade that I will be keeping, although having met the guys there, they probably would be OK with me doing so if I chose. If we end up replacing the 9000 with a 9-5 then I’ll most likely Maptun upgrade that car in time.
Second, I’ve received no email to say that the offer as written here on the site misrepresents what their offer is. If that was the case, they’d email me and I’d change it or they’d write in comments.
Third, you insinuated in comments above that I was getting some sort of kickback – “maybe Swade took the cash with him to Sweden” etc – when I’ve clearly stated that nothing of the sort has happened. They didn’t ask me to make the video, I just made it because the rare opportunity of someone in Tassie doing an upgrade was happening.
Fourth – do you have an email list of your customers? You can feel free to email your customer base and pass on any of the Maptun posts or videos I’ve ever made. My visit to their facility. My drive in Anders’ car. My mate Pete upgrading his car with Maptuner (that one was provided by them, as stated in the post). This video of John’s car. My video of another mate’s Stg 3 Saab 9-3 Aero wagon.
You can use all of this stuff, for absolutely no cost whatsoever, to try and increase your sales. Wouldn’t that be a better use of your time?
Chris…
They will ship to the US. I’ve already confirmed that with them. I’m on this side of the pond also.
Just tell them what you need, and they will ship it.
And Chris…my comment the other day regarding automatic transmissions & wimps…I WAS KIDDING! Sorry if you took it the wrong way.
Agree 100% . Swade up.He’s been listening to us bitch for a while.I hope Swade goes to Saab. Our comments can be productive.Sometimes.
Rune, if you want to find out which of the ABS sensors has failed (happened to me too, a few months ago on my 9000), all you need is a multi-tester. I measured the impedance of all four sensors and the odd one out is the one that’s broken. You can find the rear sensor connectors under the back seat left and right (you have to remove the big foam rubber plugs in the false floor) and the front ones behind the false bulkhead.
Hope that helps!
I’m trying to convince my wife I need this for improved economy — she’s not buying it.
Buy it anyway and tell her that the old fitzbangstereographic combustulator needed to be replaced. Either that or beg for forgiveness. Your choice.
I’m thinking about it, but probably will wait.
I did decide to add front fog lights to my wife’s 2009 9-3XWD, but in late February. Same Saab dealer but I guess new owner (Spyker)! Or, is when the order was placed?
Fog in Lubbock? Actually, her car is in Dallas. It’s one of those Saab things.
I do not see anything for the 2006 9-3 SportCombi 2.0t (210HP) Can anyone help?
Mind you, I also have C900′s and manual transmissions
Mark,
Is this it?

The situation with the MapTun USA retailer(s) is a bit strange. If you go to the official MapTun website then it is claims there are no dealers in the US:
http://www.maptun.com/retailers.php?area=4&country=US
However, if you go to:
http://www.maptuneusa.com/Home_Page.php
then it seems that there is a US retailer. Their web site is in a bit of a shambles though. You have to contact them to get information about their products.
So, what’s going on?
Swade:
I know we have butted heads on the rebel clown running GM, and the icy people running Toyota, not to mention the fact my father-in law lost the use of his left arm during the conflict. And that no one should ever buy Toyota’s on principal, but be that as it may, you are correct about on this issue. The blood sweat and tears of running this blog are very great. If, by chance you get some reward for doing so, no one should complain. My best guess this that you spend 6 hours per day on this thing.
My point regarding this device are these, there was a great deal of talk about how much it improved MPG, but was never and facts, or data about the starting MPG?
OK, you boy racers, I understand the need for speed, but Saabs were never sold as race cars, they were sold as hi-breds, cars that could do it all, and the more they can do it all, the more cars they will sell. Point being if you upgrade the motor and do nothing for the rest of the car, you have wasted your time, or worse, you have created a dangerous situation where you are driving a street car that can’t follow your orders. Which could lead to your death. Better brakes, suspenison, roll cages and alike might be needed to these setups. You all should know the old saying,” How fast do you want to go?, How much money have you to spend? Racing is not cheap and should not be approached as a hobby. Building up engines that can produce 35-50 HP over the stock standards are dangerous to the public without further mods.
Chris
Swade; Some sites like SaabTurboClub has a rule that anyone representing a company must have that in his/her profile so everyone knowns. Fredrik at Maptun have that in his presentation.
Tony: Try to see the positive side of the issue You will be able to even upgrade new customers cats to higher levels with hardware etc. I would guess that is where the big profit is. Be good sports and keep the SU site as a positive site for all happy Saabers.
To everyone: We enthusiasts who runs either, saab sites or a rally team are all somewhat dependent on companies and people who are financially supportive.
SaabsUnited Historic Rally Team have recently got some more fine sponsors they will be presented soon and will of course be seen on our two rally cars.

“Point being if you upgrade the motor and do nothing for the rest of the car, you have wasted your time, or worse, you have created a dangerous situation where you are driving a street car that can’t follow your orders. Which could lead to your death.”
(Even)50 extra HP on a (modern) Saab is hardly worth such a 4 Alarm dash for the exit.
Now,if I were driving an ‘unsafe at any speed’ Prius…[ROFLOL]
[You're joking,of course(?)]
Does the Maptun Software take into account a K&N Filter or the like at Stage 1? Also, for the Automatic Sportshift, can ANY tuning software make the shifting more responsive? For my ’07, sometimes when I try to up shift when the car is at speed, it is reluctant to shift, I need to shift multiple times, or I have to slow down a bit. This is usually happens during medium-high acceleration =o)
Swade deserves alot more than just some Maptun software.
I think SAAB should donate a new 9-5 and a 9-3X to Swade and then become a big advertiser on this site. I don’t want Swade’s site to be integrated into SAAB’s site though.
Swade has given a lot and has been one of the most valuable persons for us as Saab saga was evolving during the last months. Swade is a big asset to Saab community. So all please refrain from any “bad” comments towards his person. He deserves much more.
Swade, congratulations for all what you have done for us so far! You are a living legend!
Great Respect pal!
Let’s do some math because I was a bit puzzled!
The example is for a “Saab 9-3SS/SC 2.0T 210 Hp 2003-2006″.
As per maptun’s site, for a regular Maptuner order (no discount):
Nominal Maptuner price:
Fredrik,
have you guys sold many upgrades for the 09 9-3 2.0XWD model? How have people’s experiences with this software?
dave
Hi there,
I have a Saab Turbo 2.0ltr Telladega 1997 and I’m thinking about this upgrade that they list but I’m not really up with what’s involved.
Maybe it’s not worth it with my car, then again maybe it will give it some oomph but then i would probably need to upgrade the clutch..struts etc?
Any advice would be great.
http://www.maptun.com/ecuGuide.php?model=1202&kategori=176&listorder=1
For a start this is the right section to look at?
Maybe upgrading the turbo would be the way to go.
Sigh.
Ok, I am getting the setup on their website now.
Probably won’t be able to commit to anything yet though.
Thanks
John
I’m trying to conclude my Stage 1 upgrade at MapTun.
I understand the need for the VIN and filled it in but what’s with the “part nr” field? Is it really needed? I can’t proceed without it. This seems to be more in line with an ECU exchange and not just obtaining a tuner.
Have you discovered that “unsafe” button on the dash called Sports Shift Mode?
For my 2008 9-3 which is speed limited to 130 mph, I think it can handle another 50 horses. Oh by the way, 130 is about right for parts of New Mexico.
Just a thought.
Disclaimer: I am not the driver in the Youtube video, Speeding on the Highway – Saab 9-3 Aero
The Saab 9-3 Aero Hirsch (YouTube) however will go 270km/h (169mph). Now that’s fast.
I asked Maptun about this on Friday. They only need the VIN for the MapTuner. Their web designer is working on modifying the page.
… and put something like “MapTuner” in the other three ECU fields. It should let you move past the page.
Thanks MitchbSC.
I’ll try that.
I also got a response today from MapTun but didn’t get that advice. They only told me they were changing it.
Swade! I needed to email you with a question about buying from maptuner, but I couldn’t find an e-mail address.
I am set buying an ECU from maptun, but it is already 7:00 p.m. in Sweden, and the 20% discount only runs until…today. They have no office hours on weekends either. I was wondering if there was some way you could contact them and ask what the latest time is I have to purchase an ECU today. It’s only 12:40 p.m. where I live.
Thanks for your help!!
The offer expires at midnight Swedish time. That is 4,5 hrs from writing this. There will of course be some grace period, so if you put an order in seven minutes after midnight you will still get the discount.
For those of you that have emailed Maptun and not yet recieved a response; This offer generated such interest that I’ve been working almost around the clock answering questions and processing orders. My apologies to those affected! If you have submitted an enquiry but not yet recieved an answer, you will still recieve the discount after the offer expires, if you decide to purchase in the next few days.
And now for an assortment of answers;
Dealers will get compensated for this offer if we sell to their region.
There is currently no representation in the US.
Tony is no longer a MapTun dealer.
We need your VIN before we can program a Maptuner for you. The other “part number” fields and such are not necessary. If the form complains that you need to fill them in, just write whatever you feel like.
This is important: Make sure your VIN is correct!
Our programming software checks the VIN for validity, but unfortunately the website doesn’t (yet).
We have tuning for the 9-3 2.0T XWD. It will do wonders for the car. We had a 9-3X in the workshop a week ago and you wouldn’t believe how sluggish this car is as standard. The equivalent of a Stage 1 upgrade should definately be fitted on this car as standard.
More questions? If you don’t want to ask them here, feel free to email me at aberg@maptun.com
I will answer as soon as I can. Tomorrow I’m off phone duty, so I can focus all my time on answering your questions and processing your orders.
A big thanks to all of you for the interest!
Placed my order with 2 hours left in the sale!
Can’t wait to get it for my 1999 9-5 with manual trans. The international shipping isn’t that bad. I chose to get it within 2 business days and it was only $8 more than the Express Saver Shipping.
I’ll probably upgrade the suspension next with the Sport Suspension upgrade kit from Saab.
I have taken advantage of this offer with glee. Thanks Maptun and Saabs United.
For a site review check this link: http://www.saabsunited.com/2009/11/maptuner—the-plug-n-play-tune-up-for-saabs.html
I can only hope Tony mends his bridges with Maptun and sees this as the opportunity it is as per Jorgen Trued – SUHRT’s comments http://www.saabsunited.com/2010/02/20-off-maptun-software—this-week-only.html#comment-58800. Once the small percentage of us that took up the offer spread the word of this upgrade and Maptun’s support levels – non-promotion sales will rise. Then there are the regrade builds for higher stage mods for those that have already upgraded. I must add, in my region, I have dismissed any other ECU upgrade package after reviewing feedback on their levels of support or ongoing payments required.
I placed an order, but VIN# was never requested. Did something not happen correctly?
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me where the ECU is on the Saab 900se 1997. I can see the connector you plug the computer into but i don’t want to go pulling stuff out till I know where it is. Sorry I’m a nub but I’m not that used to the intricacies of the car. I need to get the Part/Serial number off it for Maptuner. I decided to go ahead with, why not.
Thanks all.
No-one can argue he convenience and simplicity with the MapTune upgrade AND the very good offer of 20% off.
However, I just placed my order with Vtuner stage 0. The extra power and torque is nice, but that Brian will read the log files of your engine and then fine tune the programming for your environment was the final argument for me.
The fuel consumption on my 2006 9-3 Aero cannot be much higher (I hope) with an indicated 14-15 L/100km presently. I have never been under 10 L/100km…
Will get back to tell you more about the 320hp/550Nm in a few weeks…
Or maybe NTP can to tell us more…
Well, I read some previous posts here and decided to call my insurer in Australia (AAMI) and they advised that if i did the upgrade even to Level1 they would not insure the car.
Thank god I didn’t go ahead with this I would have been out of pocket and uninsured.
Anyone else doing this should ring their insurer before going ahead with this. Be warned.
Isn’t the whole point to be able to tune and detune your car? Of course they are going to tell you that you are not insured if you use this product. If you claim additional horsepower they also have the right to increase your insurance rate.
Well I told them the unit increases the horsepower and that was their response.
They also have the right to refuse to insure the car.
And you have the right to choose another insurer. There are companies that will cover you if you want to do it. It’s a matter of choice.
Why would you even tell your insurer? How would they ever know applied the upgrade?
I doubt that any insurance company on the planet would require a Dyno test befroe granting insurance.
Gee I dunno, maybe it’s because if i’m involved in an auto accident and they find out the car has been modified then I become liable for all expenses.
Doesn’t sound like you have had many dealings with insurers my friend. They can be ruthless when it comes to finding a way out of paying up and they WILL check these kinds of things.
Sorry but this is a modification that needs to be researched before you just go doing it because you can get more HP out of your car.
Yes I could sit there and call through insurance companies trying to find one that will insure the car with that modification. Then when I have found one that will be another expense again.
.
Thanks for the offer Swade but I don’t think it’s worth the trouble. My car runs fine and it goes fast enough
No worries. It’s all a matter of personal choice.
Boy do i ever have to apologize.
I couldn’t get the idea of upping the hp to 225 hp on my Saab and i put a question in a local automotive forum to see if anyone knew of a good insurer that would insure the car if i got an upgraded ECU unit.
Sure enough i got some responses and was advised to contact “Just Cars” in Australia. They quoted me and said as long as I told them about any modifications they would insure the car and just requote.
The quote for Comprehensive insurance came out $30 cheaper a month than my other insurance company.
So I have swapped over to Just Cars and I’ll start doing the change over of the ECU unit in a few weeks time.
So yea i owe the peeps here who were commenting on my posts an apology.
No worries at all John. Sounds like a good outcome for everyone.
Might want to give Shannons a call, too, before you commit. They’ve been pretty good for us. We have all cars and the house with them, too.
Enjoy!
Has anyone received their MapTun in the USA? It’s going on three weeks and I still don’t have it. MapTun has been good with updating me on the status, so I’m not complaining, but I just wanted to see if anyone has received their upgrade and had a chance to install.
Hector,
I hear from a lady here in Oz, saying that she’s received hers late in the last week. Has a V6 Aero like the one I filmed and she’s very happy with the outcome.
Now if only US customs would release it, they’ve had it in Philadelphia since Thursday for review. Don’t know why they need to examine the package.
Hopefully I’ll get it by Tuesday at the latest.
From what I can see, the customs office didn’t know how to classify the product for customs. I’ve had my inbox completely flooded with UPS exception notices the last two weeks. Looks like the US customs are a bit confused about what a “Maptuner” is.
The package has been released by the customs and is scheduled for delivery tomorrow
Cool! I just checked my tracking number again and you are right! Thanks MapTun!
So, I’m having trouble downloading Stage 1 to my car…the progress stops at 4%…I already emailed you guys a couple of times but just wanted to mention it here…I did my update by loading the software your company sent to make sure I had the right files…but I keep getting “Read VIN error”.
Is anyone else experiencing any problems upon loading up their Stage 1 software?
I have a 1999 9-5 2.3t with 170hp.

Everything was sorted out nicely by Maptun. Thanks a lot Fredrik. As I had posted before, I had placed my order but the price was a bit confusing. Now I am a happy maptuned aero owner. The car has been really transformed! Excellent torque and power.
