Geneva Motor Show: 4th - 14th March 2010

The 2010 Geneva Motor Show is only a month away!!!!

So what's it going to be?

Saab 9-5 Combi?

....or Saab 9-4x production version?

Saab definitely are listed on the program, at stand 2230. They have a press conference scheduled at 3:15pm on March 2nd, during the press days for the conference.

--

I think this is about the closest I've been to a motor show without knowing what's going on.

Damn you, Saab sale saga!

My guess is both. Saab needs to keep the momentum going by showing new product. At the end of the day it is the product that counts when trying to sell cars.

I think the 9-5 will take center stage, but the 9-4X will be close by. Its important to show the world Saabs fresh new designs and outlook for the future.

9-5 for sure, 9-4x production version would be fine if it is to be launched in fall.

Not sure if they have already a showable model of the new 9-5 Sport Combi. Maybe this one will come later that year. Though it would be great to see the full palette there.

They have to show everything they can at Geneva, even a mock up of the NG9-3, maybe only for the press in a closed room.
They can't go there and only show the 9-5 Sedan once again.

New 9-5 ESTATE IS FOR PARIS IN SEPTEMBER
New 9-4 X IS FOR DETROIT NEXT YEAR

FOR GENEVE: NEW 9-5 SEDAN AND A CONCEPT CAR
( Electronic ??)

Is this what you know, or what you expect?

And why are you shouting???

I hope:
- Introducing the new 9-5 sedan for immediate shipping.
- Introducing the new 9-4x for immediate shipping.
- Presenting the new 9-5 combi as a new car to be on the market at Q4 2010
- Presenting a SAABiast (SAAB-entusiast) package to all SAAB owners (new and old). Web-service with all informations about your SAAB (EPC, service information, chat-room) will be launched Q3-Q4 2010.

Would be a big mistake not to come up with both the 9-5sc and the 9-4x production version. Even 9-3 and 9-3x hopefully with the changes/ upgrades for model year 2011 is necessary. Geneva motor show is the opportunity to adress the motoring pres. Not to come with the innovations would be a huge opportunity lost. Aside from that, a timetable for future model introductions, i.e. ng 9-3 for model year 2012 or 2013 and whatever is planned, for example in terms of hybrids, should be shown. A total mistake would be to come with mere concept cars, that maybe or never will materialize. Would be catastrophic, as even long announced model introductions like the 9-5sc and 9-4 will be received as not production ready. Would seriously harm the credibility of all what had been said by Saab management.

Hopefully, production should have been resumed by then.
Dont know how long it will take for Saab to get all the material from the suppliers needed to start the production.

From here, the only way is up!

btw,the last OG9-5 rolled of the line today and my dad was in that pic:)

Damn, it wasn't mine.
But otherwise this one will go to the museum.

All I know is I'm going to see the 9-4x and new 9-5 in Chicago on Feb 19th. I was going to the show anyway but now that I know Saab is in I'm so much happier.

They should use the momentum built by showing something meaningful.

Btw. notice how Saab and Spyker are separate stands and exhibitors. Saab is still listed under General Motors Suisse.

Another white one? Were those last 9-5's all ordered for the swedish police maybe? I still think it's a monumental car, the 9-5 estate. I like mine better every day... I'm hoping the NG one is even better and comes out soon. (That piano song from the IAA intro is playing through my head: "(Why dont't you come out, we're waiting for you, waiting for you, .... ) :D

this should be on a post of its own. Also very good statistical info in that article (also for non swedes :) )

Swade,

I realize Geneva is a very important show, but do we know anything about the New York Auto Show? A lot of SAAB aficionados are from that area and it could be a great chance to "win back" some customers and create new ones.

Haha.. scroll through the images below the article. Second to last picture is Peter Backstrom giving the car a Swade style hug!

Swade - you're a trendsetter...

Wow, I'm excited that from now on, SAAB's product launch agenda and motor show presence won't be affected by GM's bureaucracy. No more putting SAAB next to Saturn, or Chevrolet .....

Spyker UP !

Oh dang.

I hope Spyker folks are working hard behind the scenes to change that !!

It would be great to have the complete new 9-5 range on display in Geneva, however I read somewhere that the factory is short of supplies since Russelheim had stopped producing the 9-5 parts in anticipation of the liquidation. Let's be patient. Jan Ake and Victor have a lot on their plate, like to get production restarted and close the deal.

It seems like they are already working on that.

From the exihibitors list I would asume that Spyker is on Hall 1 and SAAB on Hall 2.
But if you look at the final press conference schedule you will see that both are on Hall 2.

BTW, SAAB and BYD will have the press conference at the same time; I hope not that many journos go to the BYD conference. ;-)

hehe.
I'm glad I was working after the line today. Drove cars from the CC line to the shorttrack today.
There are many who wants to be on photo's.

I got some pics of this car from the station I worked on last friday.

Some positive news:
All members of metal union got a homebaked muffin from a couple in Vargön! :)

I'm hoping the AeroX will be at Geneva. It really is our show darling, and now that Spyker owns Saab, it would be a speculative wonder as to it seeing production some day in the near future. Saab needs that kind of buzz right now.

Beautiful!

The OG 9-5 really is a symbol of the turbulence Saab endured during much of its days under GM ownership. Persistent, remarkable and solid, but neglected nonetheless.

BYD are surely the most awful vehicles in the world. I sat in one at the Detroit show last year and the stench of the cheap-cheap-cheap materials inside was truly remarkable - in a bad way.

Btw. seems Koenigsegg will be in Hall 2, as well. A joint Saab-Spyker-Koenigsegg display would be great for raising Saab's profile: mingling with the supercars.

James May has written a column in today's Telegraph about Saab:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/columnists/jamesmay/7092745/Saabs-saviour.html

Let's not forget the Toronto International Autoshow (Feb.21-28). Unfortunately, it will a forgettable affair with no Saab.

It's one of those shows where the local dealerships are responsible for bringing the cars to display.

And as there are no Canadian Dealers...

I was happy to find there will be a Saab 9-5 (new) and 9-4x at the Chicago show next week. I figured the main barrier would be just getting the cars there, but I'm assuming the 9-5 will be the same car from the Miami show exhibited in late 2009. Is that usually how it works? They just warehouse the cars and ship them around for shows?

Great timing for Saab. Now is the time to show Saab's stuff!

Also, get the cars on the lots so people can buy them.

Great !!!!
Nice article from Mr. Slow !!

Captain Slow is the right guy to write an article about Saab. Thank God Clarkson didn't give it a whirl. Clarksons review of the Saab on TopGear was funny but terrible. He didn't really reach any conclusions (much like most of their reviews actually!). Anyway, I think May did a fine job.

Wish I could go to Geneva, but alas I have to wait till NYC.

Saab has to keep careful balance between future and soon available products. Ever since 9X concept, which was ahead of competition, Saab has been so called "promise" company, but you cant sell promises.

Both proper diesel and XWD came at last minute, Saab should start to turn clock for more early time.

If there is a concept, its most likely plug-in or full EV.

I agree with whoever said Saab-Spyker should bring out ALL their respective lineups to each and every auto show around the world from now on, including concepts. No more holding back to please the "GM politburo". Remember Spyker's slogan:

""Nulla Tenaci Invia Est Via" = "For The Tenacious No Road is Impassable"

Which coincidentally rings similar to Saab's own slogan in the '90s: "Find Your Own Road" :-D

The 9-4X is already in initial low-production runs. Bring the damn thing out. The concept was first shown to the world in Detroit back in 2008, exactly two years ago for pete's sake:

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/13/detroit-2008-saab-9-4x-biopower-concept-live-reveal/

Hilarious !! I think James built in some clever metaphors there in the second and third sentences:

"The father of another girl I liked had a Volvo 244, but that car merely gave automotive substance to his attitude towards my approaches to his daughter – square, edgy, overly concerned with safety. I rarely made it up the driveway, to be honest, because a Volvo just said no. The Saab father was more liberal. I've always liked a Saab."

total agree with you lets hope that Victor and Jan Ake would bring us the 9-4X very very soon pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

i guess it will be SAAB and Spiker in the same room/area. Most important will be the electric engine on 9-3 cabrio/sedan/sport-combi/X

Thanks for the tip. Great piece. He always was my favorite presenter at Top Gear.

"Most important will be the electric engine on 9-3 cabrio/sedan/sport-combi/X"

It's out already:

http://www.lihikset.net/images/kuuppa/saab96-64/2008/saab-9-3.jpg

Saab engineers are now working on a "full-size" version [grin]

While part of me wants to just roll everything out ASAP and show all the cards at Geneva to make me happy, I'd rather see the cars debut at shows that will make the most impact in their target markets- wagon in Europe, SUV in the US. Since we all know what the 9-4x concept looks like and the production version is the same anyway, I figure just bring the concept to Geneva, but make a big splash and give the Americans some sense of shiny new never-before-seen object, at least for the million or so people going through whatever Auto Show building it may be.

So, NG 9-5SC production premiere and 9-4x concept in Geneva (along with the 9-X air, people like it, and then everything they got for the New York autoshow one month later, 9-4x production premiere, along with whatever concepts can make the trip (Aero-X would be welcome).

They need to look credible. The more cars up there the better, I agree.

Looking forward to the NYC Auto Show. It's been kind of the same ol same ol in the past few years.

This year should be QUITE different. A lot of brands that took up a lot of space will be gone.

Hopefully that means we will only see good stuff, not chevy, pontiac, saturn, buick of the same thing..

I have my eye on the Tesla Model S actually, but the Saabs/Spyker should be AMAZING!!!

Very excited!

:-) Looking forward to visiting the Geneva auto-show!!!
Swade, or others, if you're around, tell me, it would be a pleasure to drink a beer with you!
^^
Long live SAAB!

I can't imagine them bringing everything in Geneva. The wagon won't be shown because it would steal first sales from the sedan. So I guess it will be shown at the end of the year.
The 9-4X will have to wait until the wagon has been presented. Especially for the American market it is an important car but globally not as important as the 9-5 range. Saab will have to prioritize some models because they don't have the resources to bring everything at once and they won't have anything to show later on. They need to be constantly in the media. Bringing everything in Geneva would mean having nothing to show until the next 9-3 or a new concept car.

I doubt they have the production capacity to handle all the orders for the 9-5 Sedan. Given that the last 9-5 combi rolled off the line today, Saab suddenly finds themselves without a big combi. Potential customers have to resort to the smaller 9-3 or buy a competing product. Better to create some interest in the upcoming combi now.'

Meanwhile I am discovering the 9000 CS hatchback. Nice. I keep forgetting that I have a hatch and plan my purchases around the belief that I only have a sedan, but takes some time getting used to it I suppose.

GM is a mess. Now they are screwing up the Hummer sale. Fact is, Ford was able to sell Aston, Jaguar, Land Rover in a relatively short period of time. Volvo is almost a done deal...

However, GM has been unable to sell Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn and now Hummer...although all brands have offers on the table. They nearly killed us too.

Ford is batting possibly 4 for 4, GM is batting 1-5.

http://www.insideline.com/hummer/hummer-sale-to-chinese-machinery-maker-delayed.html

GM never offered Pontiac or Oldsmobile for sale, they would compete to directly with Chevrolet and Buick. The Hummer deal seems to be more of an issue with the Chinese government not wanting to have the Hummer image associated with China. Saturn's sale never made sense to me. Why would Renault supply cars to a company that would compete with Nissan in the USA? Their board vetoed Ghosn and Penske's deal.

+1. Not sure why introducing the SportCombi now, after it's been leaked (3/4 rear view) in magazines. Might as well show how promising the cars are now, and then release some concept cars to gauge what sort of direction Saab should go in. I know we've been really hating on the concept cars as of late because we'd rather see some production models, but really we don't have any clear indication of what direction Saab should go in...what shape/form for the new 9-3 for instance? A prototype in Frankfurt or Detroit would be welcome. Something that hasn't been mentioned at all is whether or not Spyker should leverage Saab production capacity and introduce its own version of a 9-5 or 9-4x for instance. Considering they're planning on using LS1 engines in the new Spyker SUV, I'd like to see some new concepts out of Spyker that trade some of the insanely styled components in favor of some more sophisticated and resolved designs. Let the Saab designers get in there and collaborate on Spyker designs, sell them in line with Panameras. If they can leverage the cost structure of Saab and keep it under control, that would be a big money maker and halo car for the new Saab. Hell, even work on a new joint platform or develop the one in the C8 to allow for the Aero-X to become a reality, ASAP, and show in Frankfurt in production form or close to it. All I can say is- get the product out there, as close to its target market, as soon as possible. We don't need more waiting, big mistake.

I'm getting sick of people dismissing any Saab made between 1994 and today because it's "just an Opel" or whatever. The majority of enthusiasts on this site own such vehicles and yet we're all apparently inspired by something beyond the ignition location.

Also, to people who say that and have never owned anything newer than a classic 900 (of which I have more than one, btw), I say there would be no Saab at all without those of us and our "rebadged Opels." Oh, but NOW they'll buy a new Saab for the first time in 20 years. Yeah, right.

I so hope to see a 9-4X production version in either Geneva or NY. Soon enough so that when I'm allowed to select a new lease-car, I can choose that. Please!

@ Chris Carrier: To support your contentions: I drive one of those post-'94 models. And, believe me, MY97 9000 2.3 FPT is no Opel, rebadged or otherwise.

@ Rune: so which one did you go for? The one with the overhauled engine? You can email me to avoid topic pollution.

Ivo

@ Chris and Ivo 71: ALL Saabs are Saabs, worthy of the badge and our recognition. Well, except for the 9-2X.

I too really don't care for opinions that suggest some models are less Saab than others. But I don't feel Saab really even had the chance to re-engineer the 9-2X other than cosmetics to bring it closer to a true Saab, whereas they actually had the chance (and did) re-engineer the 9-7X into something GM never did.

A friend of mine told me once, how can you first go to IKEA and buy some chairs and a table and then come directly to me to take the dish-washer.
It was no problem for me with my OG9-3, on the other side he wasn't able to even carry the chairs on his Beemer 318i.

I felt a bit sheepish after picking the 'other one' (also a 1997 9000 A50 2.3T), the one with failing ABS and (as it turns out) winter wheels from 1992. So I did not keep you up to date. But after replacing the wheels, the thing drives quite nicely (some 1400km later) and the warning lights stay off as long as the temperature isn't approaching -15 degrees C. (but at that point I run the risk of not only loosing ABS, but also the headlights flickered on/off at one occasion)

It is a fun car to drive though. It quickly shoots past any car I have encountered so far. In Sunday's snow storm I accelerated past two Volvos that were chugging along doing 60 in a 80-zone (I opted to keep the speed limit, as otherwise I would have to apply the brakes heading into corners due to the road conditions...).

Oh, and I discovered that all the temperature sensors are shot. :P
