Saab Spyker Press Conference Notes

February 24, 2010 in News

Update: Video of the press conference available, you’ll have to click through to watch. (Thanks, Henrik and Freddy!)

I’m thinking that this entry will grow a great deal as new bits emerge from the press conference with Victor Muller and Jan Åke Jonssson after the formal, final sale of Saab by General Motors to Spyker Cars.

————-

Here’s the first glimpse of the Saab Independence press conference. Offered by Swedish Radio via their website:

936017_190_126.jpg

The Dutch luxury sports car maker Spyker has finalised the purchase of the Swedish car brand Saab. “The transfer of ownership took place at 4:30 pm on February 23,” Spyker said in a statement.

“This is a happy day for everybody who have got Saab in their hearts, both for me, the employees, the customers and the dealers,” Saab CEO Jan Åke Jonssson told reporters at a press conference in Stockholm on Tuesday.

And Spyker CEO Victor Muller said he was sure the new business plan would work and that he expects Saab to be selling “something to the north of” 100,000 cars. He talked of the importance of making customers understand that a Saab really is for the future. He said “Saab has lost a lot of its DNA over the last few years, we are going to get that back and produce Saab-saabs.”

Thanks to Henrik and Freddy in comments, you can watch the entire press conference (in English) at nyhetskanalen.se. Click on the screenshot to watch the 21-minute video on that site. (Apparently embedding will not work for folks outside Sweden.)

The Google translation of the accompanying notes:

The time 16:30 on Tuesday formally took over the Spyker Saab.
- This is a very happy day for anyone who has a weak point for Saab in their hearts. That includes me, our customers, vendors and others, “said a delighted Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab CEO at the press conference.

Everything was signed
- This afternoon, we completed the deal between Spyker and GM. When it does, we sing alloy loan guarantees by the EIB and guarantees from the Swedish Government.
- The full package was signed this afternoon. many papers and many signatures, so it took some time, said Jonsson.

Kicks off again
Now production in Trollhättan be launched as soon as possible.
- We look forward to re-start the business, sales and development of the Saab to the unique position that Saab has always had, “said Jonsson.

- We shall also the coming days to focus on how we will work to move forward. One of the most important things is to launch production, start selling cars and developing new, “said Jonsson.

Trist take over
Spykers CEO Victor Muller joked about how boring it was to take over Saab.
- Today was an interesting but very technical day. Actually quite boring, with so much paperwork, “said Muller.

New era begins
- But it is a start of a new era, the Spyker and the Saab. It’s almost unreal that it was only three months ago we met the first time in Detorit. It’s been a hard journey, but now Saab is safe. I am very proud of all those who worked so hard.

- From Saab’s side, people have worked hard for 15 months. From our side, we have worked hard for three months. We have been supported by the Swedish government, the European Investment Bank and all of Saab’s wonderful customers, they have been unprecedented. I hope that everyone in the meantime decided to not buy the Saab has changed.

New organization
Muller also said that Saab will get a new organization.
- There will be a company that stands on its own feet, “said Muller.
During the first 100 days will Saab Spyker to focus on to start building cars again.
- We want to demonstrate to the market that we are here to stay. We present three new cars the next 16 months. It is only the beginning. We will see more interesting new products. We look forward to developing new cars.

Stood up for Saab
Victor Muller also directed a special thanks to the Swedes.
- I want to thank the Swedes very much. Amazingly many people have stood up for Saab and demonstrated that Saab is a company worth preserving. The Swedes have preserved their own icon label. I am very grateful for that. I’m even more grateful if you buy Saab, of course, joking Muller before he began answering journalists’ questions.

Completing the Saab deal – in pictures

February 24, 2010 in News

This afternoon I had the incredible privelege of being present for the final document signing for the sale of Saab Automobile, from General Motors to Spyker Cars.

Here’s some of what I saw….

——

This is some of the whiteboard that appeared at the front of the room. It lists the various tasks that had to be completed today.

It’s a little surreal because although some of those tasks occupy a small space on a whiteboard, they’re actually quite huge. Saab were still in liquidation at the beginning of today, for example.

Agenda1.jpg

There are a number of formal steps that have to be completed for Saab to exit liquidation – and here’s an example of how fine these things can be cut – they actually had a deadline to complete one of those steps today and met it with just 2 minutes to spare. If document transfers (or whatever it was that caused the delay) were just 2 minutes later, it’s quite likely that the closing would have been delayed.

And by the way, the removal of the liquidators means that as of around 2pm today, Jan-Ake Jonsson was back in charge of Saab’s management. I had a good chat with him about it and the joy he felt at the way things have happened was palpable (in that reserved Swedish kind of way).
Here’s the room as it was set up when I arrived.

TheRoom1.jpg

Here you have representatives from the multiple law firms, accounting offices, companies, etc all in one place. There wasn’t really anything left to negotiate but there was an awful amount of technical detail that had to be documented and covered off in the contracts.

Below you see the critical moment – when the shares in Saab Automobile were exchanged between General Motors and Spyker Cars. This was IT. There was a round of applause through the whole room. The GM people were incredibly happy to have completed this deal successfully.

ShareExchange.jpg

I can honestly tell you that the spirit in the room – from every participant today – was just fantastic. I spoke with GM executives, people from Deutsche Bank and even the National Debt Office and they were all incredibly happy to see this deal completed successfully.

Jan-Ake and Victor just after the share exchange…. note the contracts on the table in front. This is just a minor part of the incredible pile of contracts that had to be signed by various parties today.

ShareExchange2.jpg

A representative from the NDO signs off on some documentation along with Saab’s chief legal counsel, Kristina Geers.

NDOsign.jpg

Of course, after all was said, signed and done, there was the obligatory champagne toast.
The preparations are made….

Champagne.jpg

And finally, the toast itself.

Victor Muller made a short speech at this time, but it was quite impromptu and I only caught the last half of it on video.

ToastingSaab.jpg

And after that, the final agenda item is completed :-)

Agenda2.jpg

——

All this took place at the offices of GM’s lawyers here in Sweden.

Since then we’ve moved on to Saab’s lawyers’ offices just down the street. JAJ and Victor Muller have done the small press conference for the Swedish Media and as I write this, I think they’re doing a dealer call to start the process of informing the company as to what has transpired.
I’ll post some more notes and observations later on. But it’s been a fantastic day and one well worth celebrating.

Saab is Saab again. This is going to be an incredible journey.

Pinch

February 24, 2010 in Uncategorized

I can’t believe it’s all finally happening, nor the incredible good fortune I have to be here.
I’m in a room with around 40 people, including the dealmakers from GM, Saab, Spyker, Deutsche Bank, KPMG (in bold because I forgot them the first time and was asked to add them), the Swedish National Debt Office. There is champagne ready with two full trays of glasses. The mood is very, very jovial and there’s a palpable sense of relief here that things are finally – finally - getting done.
There are computers and contracts everywhere.
It won’t be long now. We’re nearly there.
Photos to come later.

Victor Muller to drive Saab 93 in Mille Miglia

February 23, 2010 in News

Whilst we’re waiting……
The celebrated Mille Miglia (1000 miles) historic rally will have a particularly Saaby flavour this year, with at least one and quite possibly two entries featuring Saab corporate drivers.
Victor Muller will be driving the Saab 93, below, with his son and it’s understood Jan-Ake Jonsson will also drive an entry, though the vehicle for that entry has not been finalised as yet.
The Saab 93 being driven by Victor Muller is one of the cars from the Saab Museum. I managed to get some photos of it yesterday, whihc was timely as it was being shipped out today in preparation for display at the Geneva Motor Show in just over a week’s time. After that, it will undergo final preparations for the Mille Miglia, which is on in May 2010.
DSC00289.jpg
The car is an exact replica of the Saab 93 raced by Erik Carlsson in the 1957 Finnish Rally. It has a 748cc two-stroke engine, tuned to produce 65hp (up from the usual 38hp).
DSC00290.jpg
The Mille Miglia is an 80 year old event that was first conceived as a way for manufacturers to show their cars to the whole country. Italian manufacturers were particularly keen as they needed to lift their public image for poor reliability, which goes to show that not much changed over the first 60 of those 80 years :-)
DSC00292.jpg
The event ran for around 30 years before a crashed Ferrari and resulting deaths brough about it’s end.
It was revived a few years later as a rather timid regularity event, but that only lasted a handful of years before people lost interest.
DSC00293.jpg
Since 1977, the Mille Miglia has been run as an historic event, fesaturing only vehicles of note and pedigree that were built pre-1957.

I guess we’re not in Kansas anymore!

Greetings everyone – from Stockholm!!
Holy schmozzoli it’s cold…..
StockholmVisit.jpg
I know what you’re thinking…… “you just grabbed that photo off Google Images, you’re not really there!
Well……
SwadeSthlm.jpg
“But you’ve got a beard!!”
Not all the time :-)
I flew into Stockholm this morning and was fortunate enough to enjoy a quick breakfast with Team Spyker at the Grand Hotel before they went off to do what they refer to as “boring lawyer stuff”.
I’ll be catching up with them later in the day, just before the deal is signed and final. I don’t know if I’ll get the news up first, but I will get the best photos :-) to share here with you all.
——
You think it’s snowy here. Trollhattan was much worse. Apparently it’s the most snow they’ve had in around 40 years!
Remember the SDCC with all those cars in the car park? This was the SDCC carpark yesterday.
SDCCsnow.jpg
I’ll post stuff as soon as I can, hopefully straight after the deal is done.
I’m here at the kind invitation of Victor Muller, who felt it was a fitting gesture of thanks to the community for all of the support that has been shown for Saab throughout the sale process.
So whilst I’m fortunate enough to be the person here, you should all take a bow and know that the support that’s been given has well and truly been noticed.
Griffin Up, baby!!!!

Autocar visits with Victor Muller

February 23, 2010 in News

Well, it’s fashionable for the European motoring press to get in a few words with Mr. Muller these days, isn’t it? That’s a great thing, in my opinion. More press = more cars sold at some point.
Autocar are no different than most in that department. They’ve just published a Q+A session with the Saab Spyker boss-to-be.
I’ve reproduced the whole question and answer sequence after the jump, but here are the salient pieces, at least to me:
1. Muller, on profitability: “I estimate we’ll need a volume of around 100,000 cars, nearly all made in Trollhattan, to pay for the infrastructure.”
Indeed. This is the biggest question in my mind — how quickly can Saab Automobile NV (the new Saab) realize this goal? The faster the ramp, the more stable the company will be long-term.
2. Muller, on the breadth of the Saab line: “We’ve got a new 9-5 ready to go, the 9-4X SUV is coming towards the end of the year. The 9-3 is our staple model, and still has life in it. And at the moment I’m driving a design for a new small car.”
This is as we already know.
3. Muller, on the new small Saab design: “It’s going to be the coolest thing since the Mini. I carry renderings of the latest designs with me, and I talk to the Saab guys all the time. I want it to be influenced by the first Saab, in fact my codename for it is 92, like the first one. It uses the original teardrop shape; the aircraft with no wings. That’s where Saab cars came from.
We will need a partner, but it would be extraordinary to go announcing partnerships before you own the company. But I can tell you this is going to be a hyper-modern, super-cool car, every bit as iconic as the Fiat 500 or Mini or Beetle. Everyone’s going to want one, and it’s long overdue.”

Saab 92
Wow. The Saab enthusiasts have spoken, and the plans put forth formally are still in action.
I have to admit it, gents: the prospect of a sleek, modern Saab 92 has me giddy. How many cases of order forms are our dealers going to need to fill all of the requests? It will sell.
Consider this: if Scion can sell boat loads of those boring xC’s and Honda can’t keep the Fit in stock, Saab will have huge success with a 2013-ish Saab 92.
4. Muller, on attracting new customers: “That’s the simplest job we have. I believe they’ll flock back in hordes. There are 1.5 million Saabs on the road, and 4.5 million people with recent Saab experience. I don’t actually need any new customers to do this; I just need my old customers back!”
I’ve not thought of it that way, but he’s right. As I mentioned to Swade recently, I think that much of this volume will have to come from Saab’s traditional markets, yet some of those markets are economically challenged. How the new Saab weathers the short term once again is a key concern.
Once again, people, I am growing more and more excited each day about Saab’s new lease on life. Vive la Saab!!

Tuesday Morning Snippets – Big edition

February 23, 2010 in News

It’s Tuesday in Australia and every indication right now – even from the Swedish press – is that Tuesday’s going to be a big day for Saab in Sweden.
The signals coming though say that the Saab sale will be closed on Tuesday. Money will change hands and from some time of the day – as yet unknown – Spyker Cars will be the new owners of Saab Automobile.
I’ve spoken with Victor Muller in the last 24 hours and indications are still a little fuzzy as to exactly when it will happen. But the good news is that it will happen.
From what I’ve heard so far, there won’t be any big sort of fanfare, not even a big physical press conference in the traditional sense. I’m sure there will be a press release, however, and some sort of interaction. As usual, I’ve got someone on the ground there who will hopefully be able to fill us in as soon as there’s a story to tell.
As soon as I know something, you’ll know it too.

My uniform for the day….. :-)

I want to talk just for a moment about the Automotive News article that hit the wires earlier, suggesting the recruitment of a few former Porsche executives to Saab.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller said earlier this month that he is looking for two “heavyweights” from the car industry to join the supervisory board of the combined Saab-Spyker.
Two names that should be on the top of Muller’s wish list are Wendelin Wiedeking and Holger Haerter.
The dynamic, but recently discredited, duo might relish a second chance at turning a broken brand into a success.
Wiedeking, 57, became one of the most-acclaimed — and highest-paid — industry executives after he saved Porsche AG from bankruptcy in the early 1990s.
Like Saab today, Porsche was in financial trouble two decades ago because of a weak model lineup and a production system that needed an upgrade.
Wiedeking secured the struggling small company’s survival with innovative methods along the entire manufacturing chain such as the “Porsche improvement process” and “process optimization through supplier involvement.”
Next to Wiedeking, Haerter is most closely associated with Porsche’s transformation from a financial basket case to one of the most profitable carmakers in the world. The 53-year-old economist from Bad Kreuznach, Germany, made the company billions through shrewd investments such as his successful hedging of Porsche’s exposure to the weakening dollar in the middle of the 2000s.

I was a little relieved when I re-read the piece just now and saw the specific mention of them maybe being considered for appointment to a supervisory board. Upon first reading, I’d subconsciously taken the article to suggest recruiting them to the operational management team. That idea made my insides scream a massive “Nooooooooooooooo”
A guy like Haertner may actually have a role to play. Saab will be in need of a lot of those backoffice functions that GM have performed on their behalf for the last decade or so. An experienced guy like Haertner could step right in and use his experience for Saab’s benefit.
Weideking, however, is an entirely different animal and one I’d personally hate to see involved with Saab.
The whole Porsche/VW fiasco of 2008/2009 was basically a big family feud between to incredibly egomaniacal cousins, hell bent on besting one another. Saab will definitely need their management to be the best they can be, but this man – in my own humble opinion – lacks the human element that makes Saab a storied brand.
Weideking only seems to know one way to work – his way. When he didn’t get his way in trying to take over VW with his sportcar/hedgefund company, there just wasn’t enough room at the top for both he and Ferdinand Piech, regardless of his role in Porsche’s success.
In short and from my reading only, he is quite possibly the polar opposite of Saab’s Jan-Ake Jonsson and I have a hard time seeing a guy like that succeed in a position anywhere near similar to JAJ.
No thanks. Not for me.
But the finance guy might be a winner.

We wait……

A closer/clearer look at that Eurotuner Saab 900

February 22, 2010 in Saabology

I showed some scans from Euro Tuner magazine over the weekend. They featured their first ever Saab in the magazine, a 900 Convertible owned by a guy named Aaron Elledge in Tacoma, Washington.
Aaron’s been in touch with me since then and sent me some clearer images from the magazine, which are posted below.
This is quite a beast of a vehicle, too. Aaron’s had it for 9 years now and the list of modifications is quite extensive. I don’t have time to re-type the whole article here, but 335hp should tell you that this is no simple convertible.
Aaron’s running a Megasquirt custom ECU setup, bigger turbo, 2.3 Saab head, special headers, 3-inch downpipe, uprated wastegate – the list goes on. All that power has lead to five busted gerboxes over the years, but Aaron’s been working on that, too. A limited slip diff, reinforced casing and ‘autobahn’ gears (new to me, too) have been fitted and apparently it’s all a very nice package, now.
Click to enlarge and enjoy and thanks to Aaron for getting in touch.

The “Just Saab” vehicle to show at the Cincinnatti Auto Expo

February 22, 2010 in Saabology

Eggs wrote earlier today about how Just Saab in Cincinnatti, Ohio, plan to use a wrecked Saab 9-3 to showcase the brand’s safety at the upcoming Cincinnatti Auto Expo.
I agree with Eggs that this is a fantastic idea and it’s just the sort of impactful statement that Saab need to jolt people from the incorrect impressions they’ve been getting from the press the last few months.
Back in November last year, I actually received some photos from AJ Murphy at Just Saab and posted an article here on SU. I’ve reproduced that article below so that you can see (again) what the people at the Cinci Auto Expo will be seeing.
——
I’d like to thank AJ Murphy from Just Saab in Cincinnati, Ohio, for sending me these images from the Just Saab showroom.
What you see here is a real-life demonstration of Saab safety and it’s become quite a talking point for customers coming into the dealership. The car is a 2009 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and it was recently hit in the rear by a truck.
2009-totaled-9-3showroom3.jpg
The owner walked away without a scratch or even an ache and as you might expect, is awaiting delivery of his new Saab 9-3.

….we were so impressed that this much damage resulted in no injuries that we put the car in our new car showroom! It’s a fantastic conversation piece but more importantly delivers a strong message to prospective SAAB owners of just how safe these cars are.

Some interesting points from AJ:

  • 3 of the 4 doors open and close
  • The car still drives (was driven from the body shop to the detail bay, then to the showroom)
  • No airbag deployment (how intelligent is this SRS system?)

Here are the images. Click to enlarge.

EnG Snippets – Swade’s Out Edition

February 22, 2010 in Troll Stuff

So, Swade’s out and about. You’re going to like what he’s up to, but it’s taken a toll on his time and the logistics of blogging have gotten a little difficult to manage. I’m happy to step in for a post or two.
Well, gents, the weather in my corner of the North American continent has returned to a more normal 60 degrees F / 15 degrees C this weekend, so I was able to get out and work on the cars a little (and get in some top-down driving in the 900, woo hoo!). This put a few thoughts in motion about the 9-5, and while I’m at it, I’ll update you with a couple of news snippets regarding things (peripherally) related to Saab.
—————
First, the bit about the EnG 1999 Saab 9-5 SE:
I’ve vacillated about modding or not modding this car. I purchased the 9-5 to provide basic transportation while I repaired and further restored my 1988 Saab 900 Turbo convertible. Now, naturally, I have my “new” 1991 Saab 900 Turbo convertible and the 1988 will soon be gone. The 1991 basically needs nothing except a good detail. Sure, there are always little projects (I just replaced the thermostat), but nothing that will take any time or planning.
So, I got to thinking about the 9-5. It’s got good “bones” — no rust and all the parts are there. I’m reasonably sure that the car has never been mistreated, too. Over the couple of years that I’ve owned it, I’ve replaced a few things to keep the car on the road, but I’ve not done anything to better it.
Now I’m considering some improvements. Especially seeing how easily the Maptuner improved a car for one of Swade’s friends, I thought that I’d try something like that myself. I’ll have to wait for some time for a Maptuner for my car, and I think that I’m just as well served with a new chip or a new computer anyway. I’ve done no research in the last year, but I know that there are options. The handling is good, but I’m sure that some new bushings and shocks will help. Finally, some breathe-easy mods can’t hurt, either.
The question is: how much do I invest in this car vs. investing in a newer, better car? I’ll be shopping over the next few weeks to find out where the numbers fall. This is the car as of this afternoon:
EnG 1999 9-5 SE Feb 2010 small.jpg
————-
In the “peripherally related to Saab” department, Bejing Automobile Industry Corporation (BAIC) purchased 40% of the Daimler-Fujian Motor Industry joint venture to produce vans in China. As you may recall, BAIC bought the rights and tooling for the previous generation 9-5 in hopes of developing a Chinese-brand vehicle based on that design in about 18 months. Perhaps BAIC is setting themselves up to be a European-oriented full-line auto producer in China? Something to watch.
—————
I love the novel concept proposed by Just Saab for their upcoming auto show. Just Saab, a Saab dealership with stores in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and Dayton, Ohio, USA, is preparing to display not only their new Saabs at the Cincinnati Auto Expo, but they are also including a crashed 2009 Saab 9-3. The driver and recent Just Saab customer walked away from the accident, and they’re planning to use the crushed vehicle to highlight Saab’s safety engineering and manufacturing quality. You Cincy Saabisti may wish to attend the event which is scheduled for this Thursday through Sunday. Photos, please!

Monday Snippets – quick edition

February 22, 2010 in Saabology

Hey all,
Sorry for the sporadic posting, but internet access still seems problematic and there’s a bucketload going on away from the site at the moment. If I don’t get around to any emails you may have sent, please forgive, but I will get to it when I can.
The timing’s not great, but we will get everything from this week covered.
——
Vladimir Antonov must be feeling incredibly reassured that his public statements will not jeapordise the sale of Saab in any way, because he’s making a lot of statements.
First there was the NY Times editorial where he hit out over misplaced fears about Russian involvement in general. More recently, he’s also confirmed that the first $25mil instalment of the Saab sale was funded by his Convers group of banking interests.
Now he’s talking up further investments – up to $100mil worth – and even building a new Saab factory in Russia in due course.

“It depends on GM changing its mind and letting me in. If so, we will plan on opening a plant in Russia and starting production.”

And that sentence contains the keys to Antonov being involved. He’s sidelined at GM’s insistence and any close involvement in the near future would depend on GM changing its mind.
I guess this might be his way of working on them.
Personally, I’d prefer to see him doing what his banking group does best – providing banking. Saab dealers still need a lot of help in this area.
——
This car came up on my Flickr feed today. I’m not sure where it’s up for sale, but these definitely look like “for sale” type photos.
The text that accompanies them on Flickr read as follows:

This car is in mint condition, new paint, redone interior, complete engine and gearbox overhaul, new exhaust system, alloy wheels with very good Michelin M+S tyres, Momo SAAB three-spoke leather steering wheel. Always kept in garage during winter. Non-smoking vehicle.

Clean991.jpg
Clean992.jpg
More photos of this incredibly clean Saab 99 appear here. If anyone finds the ad for it, please feel free t post in comments.
Certainly seems like a very clean car.
——
It seems Saab’s assured future is getting all the design people out of hiding and posting their ideas everywhere.
We’ve already covered a number of things here at SU, with another popping up today.
I think this one’s a little further down the track than others, though.

Internet problems

Hi all,
I seem to be beseiged by internet problems at the moment. You won’t believe this, but I’m actually sitting in a McDonalds as I write this because I seem to be having trouble getting access anywhere else.
It’s not the best week for this to be happening given that the Saab sale is expected to be finalised, but hopefully it’ll sort itself out soon.
Apologies for the hiccups, but hopefully we’ll get it nailed soon.
