A note for Saab 9-3 owners with corroded or snapping springs

February 21, 2010 in Uncategorized

I received this from TedY through the week.
I know there have been some issues with the Saab 9-3 SS range (not sure about combis and convertibles) with springs snapping on some vehicles.
TedY has a 9-3 and as an owner on GM’s register, he received the following letter. It may be of interest for other owners as well. It explains the nature of the problem as well as the remedy being provided for. Obviously how this will play out in the wake of the Saab sale will remain to be seen.
I’ve reproduced as much of it as I can, but it’s signed by Scott Lawson, Director of Customer and Relationship Services.

Thanks TedY for sending it in.

Saab 900 featured in Eurotuner magazine

February 21, 2010 in Saabology

I’m told that this is a rare occurrence, which is strange given how tuneable Saabs actually are, but there’s a fantastic looking Saab 900 Convertible in the current issue of Eurotuner magazine.
eurotuner page 1.jpg
Here’s the convertible…..
Saab900Eurotuner.jpg
The car belongs to Aaron Elledge, from Tacoma, Washington. I don’t think I’ve come across Aaron or his ‘vert before (apologies if I’m mistaken) but it definitely looks like a sweet Saab.
Kudos to Aaron for getting it published like this.
Saab900eurotuner5.jpg
Eurotuner also have their own summary guide to Saab tuning, which I’ve tried to reproduce in a readable size below without totally killing my bandwidth.
There’s not much there that a reasonably experienced Saaber wouldn’t have heard already and clicking on either of the tags at the end of this post should get you plenty more Saab performance posts from this site.

Saab 96 rally car for sale – Jalopnik style

February 21, 2010 in Saabology

Jalopnik have a daily segment where they feature a reasonably rare or distinctive car for sale for what seems to be high money. The segment is called “Nice Price or Crack Pipe?” – the inference being that some people will see the rare example as a good opportunity to own something they’ve always dreamed of, whilst others will think the seller’s on drugs.
And with that explained, it’s time to have a look at this Saab 96 vehicle for sale via Anamera.
Saab96rallycar.jpg
As I’m regularly watching my mates from the Saabs United Historic Rally Team build our two Saab 99 Turbos, I know there’s a lot involved in the process. Building a rally car isn’t easy, or cheap.
This Saab 96 has been built to the exact specs used by Eric Carlsson during his winning years in the early 1960s.
The car comes with the following options and accessories:

  • 12 mini light wheels with fresh mud and snow tyres, intermediate and studded tyres for ice.
  • Fully prepped shell.
  • Multi point roll cage.
  • Lightweight doors, bonnet and boot lid.
  • Fiber glass wings.
  • Wheel arches aluminum lined.
  • Brake and fuel lines re routed inside car.
  • Works spec 1730 cc engine with copper head gaskets.
  • Down draft Weber for tarmac, twin 45DCOEs on crossover manifold for forest.
  • Works close ratio gearbox (and spare!),
  • Limited slip diff,
  • Large core radiator,
  • 14 row oil cooler,
  • Hand made free flow exhaust manifold.
  • Works springs, Bilsteins,
  • Saab 95 (estate) rear axle (stronger with bigger brakes),
  • Strengthened wishbones,
  • Works mud flaps etc.
  • Twin parallel Facet fuel pumps,
  • Large bore fuel pipe (to keep up with the twin Webers).

The asking price for all this – 25,000 Euros.
You rally guys will know the value, but for the regular punters out there – nice price or crack pipe?
Thanks to David for the link!

I love a good modified Saab 96

February 20, 2010 in Saabology

I’m not sure how current this is. The website looks a little out of date now and I haven’t taken the time to contact the owner yet.
It’s sure fun to look at, though.
This is a Saab 96 Turbo, built by a guy named Martin Roth. It just goes to show how good these cars can look with the right styling (have a look at the black Saab 96 V6 if you need some more convincing).
96turbo1.jpg
96turbo2.jpg
Martin’s website is here and you can check out the build of the Saab 96 Turbo on the site. There’s some great photos of Saab gatherings there, too, with heaps of Saab 96s in formation.
And whilst you’re there, I’m sure you’ll enjoy checking out the awesome, mid-engined Saab Sonett Turbo as well :-)

Follow up to that WBZ story about Saab and other ‘declining’ brands

February 20, 2010 in Troll Stuff

I think we can all feel a little fortunate that Kevin Q pointed out the WBZ-TV story about brand being phased out that was being planned for airing in the Boston market.
With Kevin pointing it out, we were able to take a little action and from the comments we received on site from WBZ, those actions were directly responsible for them altering the story.
You can watch the final edit on video here (or read it in text form, here)
It’s a good thing, because that story spread to a number of other markets – like Los Angeles, Milwaukee and others.
Of course, it would have been better if they hadn’t mentioned Saab at all, seeing the brand is transitioning and not being phased out in any way at all. Volvo were mentioned in the promo Kevin heard and they seem to have been removed all together.
Perhaps the reason Saab were still included was because of the video they footage they shot with a Saab-owning lady named Mara Woloshin. Mara was rightly concerned about here dealership closing and the increased distance she’d have to travel to service her car. Still, it’s not fitting in with a story on brands like Pontiac and Saturn being closed.
One of the annoying things about all this is that a little bit of digging indicates that Mara’s video footage appears to have been included out of convenience.
One of our commenters, HughW, managed to track Mara down and contact her. She was quite possibly a little surprised to hear about the story in the end…..

Thanks much for the email…I WAS concerned, VERY CONCERNED when the story was done, it was a few months ago when GM gave up on selling the company.

So the interview footage was taken when Saab were being closed, but used when Saab are being sold.
These are the things that get me frustrated about dealing with the press.
I guess it fleshed the story out a little more, having a third brand feature in the story. but the association, having Saab in the same story as Pontiac and Saturn, is a damaging one and totally unnecessary.
——
By the way, there should be no complaints about what Mara’s said on the video. Her concerns were quite justified. She was asked a question and answered.
The problem is the way the media have used the video and the chance it has to spread a damaging message through syndication.
I guess it highlights the importance of being an ambassador for the brand – noticing when things aren’t right and taking courteous actions to correct them.

Saab GB dealers gearing up for celebration

February 20, 2010 in Saabology

All you Saab fans in Great Britain should set aside some time next weekend to get along to your local dealer and show some support.
ReBjorn.jpg
Saab GB dealers will be having a sales event following on from the completion of the Spyker purchase – expected next week – and I’m sure these dealers who have done it tough for the last year or so would appreciate some smiling faces and some encouragement.
They’d probably appreciate a few sales to kick things off under new ownership, too, and there will be some sales campaigns running on various new and Approved Used models.
I won’t give any more away than that. There’s a Swade cupi doll somewhere in the Saab GB offices and it’s probably having its wrists broken right now.
But please do make sure you set aside some time to say G’day at your local Saab forecourt – and if you’re in the market then this would be a perfect opportunity to get on board the Independence Train.

Saab 9-3x with decals = dealer support

February 19, 2010 in Saabology

You’ve seen cars like this from Saab in the last few years. In the last few years, they’ve typically been press vehicles with “Biopower” written along the side (or if they’re going sideways/backwards, then “Saab Performance Team”).
You remember our mate Till72 from Germany? He picked up his new Saab 9-3x earlier this month, on his birthday. The one with the signed engine cover and a nice Hirsch jacket as a birthday present from his dealer.
As you can see from those stories, Till has a very good relationship with his dealer.
So much so that he offered to do a bit of advertising for him. Click to enlarge.
9-3x Ad(2).jpg
Till’s message:

I’d like to show you part two of my personal Saab and dealer support plan. It’s just the drawing I did for the livery on my 9-3x. I liked that design when I saw it on a few dealer cars here at SU and agreed with myself that it would not hurt me to carry it along for some months.
So I told my dealer “you pay for the livery and I carry it around for six months or so”. He gladly agreed. I can’t do much about dealer/floorplan financing right now. But I can make Saab and therefore my dealer visible in the streets so that even those who don’t know Saab yet see what kind of car just attracted them. And where they can buy it.

That’s a fantastic gesture, I reckon. And a very good conversation starter as well.
Dealers – perhaps you’d have a few more clients willing to do the same?

West Texas Saab Club seek graphic design help?

February 19, 2010 in Saabology

I just thought I’d throw this one out there and see if any of you talented graphic people could help out.
There’s a new Saab Club being formed in West Texas and I’ve received an email from Clay M seeking some help with designing an appropriate logo that could be used for web and print media, as well as other applications as needed.

I have extremely limited experience with creating graphics and the work I have done in the past is just general pixel-based creations with Windows Paint. I have a good idea of what I am wanting, but haven’t had any luck in successfully producing anything physical.
Ideally, I would like a graphic in a size and format that can be used for letterhead, t-shirts, banners, etc. Would you possibly know of a graphic-savvy individual that might be interested in providing this service on the basis that I provide the general idea for the logo?

Hopefully we’ll find some help here…..

WTSaab.JPGI’ve attached a basic idea of what I’m looking for (click to enlarge), although the placement of the text still seems a little awkward to me. As you can tell, the entire logo is pixelated and some of the items used didn’t resize very well. I’d say that all of the components of the logo are necessary (state outline, griffin crown, SAAB text, Swedish flag, Texas flag, etc.), as are some of the colors, but there is some artistic license available.

If any of you feel like having a crack at this, please feel free and email me your results, which I’ll send on to Clay.
Thanks in advance.

One man’s thoughts on the Saab 9-4x (well, kinda)

February 19, 2010 in Saabology

I received an email from John P a few days ago. He recently took charge of a Cadillac SRX, which he received as a loaner from his dealer whilst his Saab was in for a service.
His thoughts on the vehicle are below:

——
I wanted to give you some impressions of the new 9-4x via the Cadillac SRX.
The first thing I will get out of the way is that the 3.0 v6 that has been panned by the motoring press is indeed not enough power for this vehicle.
The rest of the vehicle is brilliant.
The handling is tight and sporty and the interior roomy for 4-5 people. With the 2.8T this is a winner, dare I say class leading. With the Saab DNA that will be injected into the 9-4x in the form of Saab styling and excellent Saab seating this vehicle will be a hit in North America and possibly even abroad if a diesel can be found.
I’m really happy that Saab is going to be playing in this growing segment.
As an aside my dealer is Saab and Cadillac and they say they are excited about the 9-4x as they are selling so many Cadillac SRXs. Let’s bring this to market and get the Saab name out there.
——
I’ve mentioned it here plenty of times – the Saab 9-4x might not be a typical Saab segment vehicle, but it’s going to be a very important one, especially in the United States.
It’s good to hear some encouraging words.
Thanks John!

What to do about Saab dealer finance?

February 19, 2010 in Saabology

If you’ve visited this site in the last 24 hours then I’m sure you’ve seen the up close and personal look at the hardship being faced by one particular Saab dealer in the US. It may be time for us to band together once again and show some tangible support for Saab dealerships in order to try and some of them survive until the situation is more stable.
The exact form of that support is yet to be determined. I’m waiting on some feedback from the Saab dealer group in the US and of course, it would be prudent to see if there’s already a plan in place at the global level. This might be underway already. We don’t know.
The #1 lubricant in business is cashflow. It keeps the machine running. Saab, the car company, need to be able to pay their employees and suppliers, which is why they can’t just give cars to dealerships and get the money several months later when the car is sold. This is why floorplan financing exists, because Saab need cash from dealers in exchange for providing stock.
That business model is stuck at the moment because the banking sector is reluctant to provide that sort of finance to Saab dealerships. What’s needed first and foremost is to get that particular mechanism un-stuck.
US banks received billions upon billions of dollars in bailouts in 2009 and it seems only right that they should use their resources on a prudent business decision to support local jobs and businesses.
Hopefully there might be a role that US Saab owners can play in terms of raising awareness amongst US decision makers who can help in assisting these US businesses.
——
Allow me to pass on a few comments from the post I linked to above….
From Saabseller:

The public has to start to support the dealers too, get your car serviced, trade your car on a newer car… most dealers, like myself have had no ‘new’ cars come through for over a year. We had pool stock that was mostly 07 build. I worked my way through them until only orphans were left. Most GM multi franchise dealerships have been told to get the Saabs out of the shop.
Don’t just waffle, buy a Saab…. {thanks to those that have}

And from Van God Los:

I don’t want to be a pain in the *ss but honestly, if a local workshop charges me 90EUR for new filters and oil ( a small service), why I should pay 150EUR at my local saab dealer for the same service? That’s one of the reasons why my former 9-3 went to the local workshop and not to an official Saab workshop.

We DO need to support Saab dealers in terms of buying vehicles, either new or CPO, and getting service there.
Dealers also need to ensure they make it easy and attractive for us to come. The two biggest hurdles, from my point of view, are trained staff and pricing.
What it boils down to is meeting in the middle, which will come eventually, I’m sure.
——
I’ll get back to you with some firm plans for support once a recommended path comes through to me.

Up close and personal with Saab dealership problems

February 18, 2010 in Saabology

I wrote earlier this week about the difficult situation faced by many Saab dealers right now, on the verge of Saab’s re-birth.
Darryl Carl owns New Salem Saab and it’s been in his family for nearly 50 years. Darryl left the following in comments to that piece.

——
If you only knew how true this is.
The problem is far reaching and has hit the exclusive dealers very hard. There is no available assistance offered from the new owner nor SCNA. My fears have come to realization.
We all saved Saab but not all of us will be here to stand behind what we believed in saving. The disappointment is beyond words.
The issues are two and the greatest problems become compounded, let me explain.
The exclusives with no other franchise interests have been living on nothing (ie losing money monthly) for over a year, possibly two. Some dealers helped the cause by downsizing, pairing up and doing what was needed to survive and minimize losing money by reducing expense (ie services to customers and employees). Some dealers were stuck and could only do this to a lesser degree which made it worse. This makes you last two and three years results for your P&L poor to say the least and any trend you have over that period of time is decreasing. Profits and Cash the most.
So then the banks pull floor plan because Saab is going to die and the financial institutions are also in their own mess so they tighten credit requirements like a noose with no footing.
Here comes the fun part.
Say you’re me. For the last two or so years everything you have built up, two perfectly nice, overkilling state of the art, award winning Saab-only multimillion dollar buildings, a solid customer based and some profits which trend a slow but positive growth.
Then the world explodes!!
You consolidate in to one building, you then move to a central location to best serve your customers, you sell and lose big money on both buildings. Now you lease, but things are getting worse. So you pair up with someone to further expand the cash time line (ie slow the running out)and move yet again. During this time you start to drop services because you cannot afford them and drop employees who have been with you since you cannot even remember…
You go to every bank you can find, you explain until your lips fall off what you have done and are doing to maintain your company and the Saab brand. The banks know you are a Saab dealer and still think you are dead to start….after explaining we have Saved Saab, then they explain it’s still an injured brand and cite your company’s current P&L trend and accompanied negative and now sparse cash flow.
So you just want to puke… as you re-explain how this happen and try to show them a business plan which is not “will come” but again slow steady growth.
In the end, the door slams shut again. You have minimal cash flow, you have been losing money for over two years, you continue to move around, Saab is not Saved yet….
The answer is the same “Due to the condition of your company and your three year trend we cannot offer any LOC assitance and certainly not floor plan for a Saab franchise.
The best in Saving Saab will come, the worst in losing several to many long term totally committed, brain washed, stick with it until the end exclusive Saab dealers is coming too.
The truth hurts, but the truth needed to be said. This is the truth in my world.
Sad, yet completely true.
Can you imagine? Talk about insanity. It’s a wonder I haven’t had a nervous break down.
SOMEONE SAVE THE DEALERS>>….AND YOU BETTER ACT NOW….

Thursday night mega-snippets

February 18, 2010 in Saabology

Lots going on at the moment, so a mega-snippet entry’s going to have to tie all the smaller stories together tonight.
——
Congratulations to Mark W in Germany, who’s wife just bought another little Saaber into the world yesterday, a little boy to join his big sister, Lea.
——
If you’ve got a 2000-2009 Saab and are missing an owner’s manual, Andy Rupert’s got you covered.
Volvos, too.
——
Speaking of Volvos, there’s a dealer in New Jersey that seems to be going after Saab owners with incentives.

Additional offerings available during the spring sales event include up to $1,000 in loyalty cash for all Volvo and Saab owners on all models…

Trying to cash-in on the mistaken belief that Saab have fallen over, I think.
We’ve got some incredible background on this week’s incorrect story that came out of Boston, too. Will cover that on the weekend. Journalism at it’s finest – NOT!
——
Sweden’s Lovefilm has collated their all-time best Saab moments in movies and TV.
Not surprisingly, they all involve Saab convertibles.
——
Can’t help but continue to follow the Toyota fiasco.
From Jalopnik, this is an awfully tactless new ad campaign for the most recent recall candidate (steering problems), the Corolla.
It not only features a brace of Zombies, but also the ‘moving forward’ slogan (whether you like it or not).
500x_toyota_corolla_zombie_s.jpg
——
AutoZeitung have some 9-5 wagon spyshots going….
Saab-9-5-Estate-002.jpg
——
And finally, another tale from the Saab Support Convoys…..
One of the guys who organised the convoy in Brno, Czech Republic, made a bet with some friends that he’d eat his tyres if they got more than 50 cars in attendance.
This is, of course, a good motivator for people and as a result, there were 60 or so cars at the Brno convoy.
Feeling some compassion for their friend Ludvik, the locals got a special edible tyre made up for him and I’m sure a good time was had by all as they helped him finish it off.

Another Saab cake!

Viggen soft-top ‘pop’ – problem?

February 18, 2010 in Saabology

Quijote has just posted this one in comments and as it’s a prospective purchase (of a Viggen, no less) I figured time was of the essence…..

I just came across a beautiful Viggen convertible that I think I may snatch up.
In fact I was about to pull the trigger when I receive this video, as requested, of the soft top motion. There is a pretty loud pop when the lid opens up, whether the top is folding in or out of the compartment. Can you please check out the video, I’d like your opinions on what that may be.
Cause for concern?
Hydraulic leak?
Soft top failure on the way?
Or just an annoying noise, but nothing to worry about like the dreaded SIDs?
I previously owned a 9-3 SE and Viggen convertible and it never made this noise, although the 9-3 SE did suffer from quite a few soft top failures, the Viggen was solid.
Your thoughts? Can you post them here please?

And here’s the video:

Any of you convertible owners with similar issues, please feel free to advise.

Report: Antonov paid first $25mil of Spyker’s Saab purchase

February 18, 2010 in News

This is an interesting one….
Bloomberg are reporting that Vladimir Antonov supplied the first $25 million of Spyker’s purchase money for the Saab purchase from General Motors. The funds were apparently supplied by Antonov’s Convers Group to Victor Muller’s company, Tenaci Capital.
The source for this – Antonov himself.

“The first installment was provided by our banks,” Antonov said today by telephone from Courchevel in the French Alps, where he is vacationing. “I can confirm that $25 million will be used for the acquisition costs.”
….Spyker has put $25 million into escrow with Detroit-based GM. Another $25 million is due on closing and the rest of the $74 million in cash is due July 15.

Before the Swedish press go and get their knickers in a twist, the source of funds is apparently known to all parties and has been given the all clear.

All major stakeholders, including GM and the Swedish government, are aware that Antonov is funding Spyker’s first payment, the investor said.

Why is this even a story, then?
The word out of Sweden a few weeks ago is that Sweden’s secret service did some digging and provided a report on Antonov that led to Spyker’s December 18 bid for Saab being torpedoed by GM at the request of the FBI. That report claimed some shady links to Antonov’s businesses.
As mentioned in the Bloomberg story and covered here at SU, Antonov recently penned an editorial in the New York Times claiming some nationalistic persecution and it’s reported he is taking steps to clear his name in the public eye.
Victor Muller supported his soon-to-be former partner by stating to the press that he would be welcome back as an investor in Saab Spyker NV once the time is right to do so.
