Notes about the future of Saabs United

February 15, 2010 in Troll Stuff

We’re waiting on the future of Saab Automobile to be settled (word is it may be another week before every ‘i’ is dotted prior to final documents being signed) I thought I’d take a moment to talk a little about the future of this website.
Right now, the future is heading in two possible directions in parallel, with a possible fork in the road looming. One option is only about a 3% chance of happening, at the most, but it’s there to be considered.
The 97% chance:
The most likely thing that will happen around here is an expansion of the site in the near future. I have my IT guy working on it right now, but he needs to get a new server, one that’ll run the software I’ve purchased.
That expansion will be centered around a forum, which will be added as part of the Saabs United URL.
The forum will be aimed at news and community issues, rather than covering technical issues. Saab Central and Saabnet both handle technical issues very well and I’ve got no desire to step on anyone’s toes there. There might be some crossover with Saablink but I think the core audience for SU and SL are quite different so I’m sure we can both handle things OK.
The forum will allow an opportunity to keep discussing some issues after they fall off the front page here on the blog and the forum should be very helpful in that regard. It should be a good de-facto archive for some of those entries people might like to refer back to but have trouble finding.
I’ve got a few other ideas for themes within the forum area but I’ll keep those up my sleeve for the time being. Needless to say I think a good, focused forum will be a valuable addition to the site and hopefully, make the site a better ambassador for the brand.
The forum should kick off in the next 2-3 weeks and that will happen regardless of the possibility of….
The 3% chance
At the end of 2008, I received some interest from a US-based media site in acquiring Trollhattan Saab. Discussions got a reasonable distance when things started looking shaky for Saab, so we called things off. I went ahead and started Saabs United and committed to covering this sale story right until the end, which I’m pleased to say we did (and did well).
Now that Saab’s future is assured, we’ve been in touch again and they’re having a look at the new site, the old site and their needs/resources.
Why is this of interest?
Basically, it’s an opportunity that’s available and must be considered, however unlikely it might be to come forth.
Also, I do have to change something about the way this site operates. Over the last 12 months, I committed to cover the Saab sale and that commitment ended up meaning I was working on this site between 6-10 hours a day (more in the 6 weeks leading up to January 26). I have a family and a day job and both have suffered as a result of this. Something has to change.
A sale of the site, should it happen, would mean that someone else can take care of the maintenance, the bills and the administration. All I have to think about is content. It would also give my family a tangible outcome for all the work that’s been done over the last five years, which is something important, too. They’ve given a lot.
——
The chances of Saabs United being sold are very remote. The guys in the US are looking at the numbers, but even if the site’s numbers are sufficient to get them interested, they’re still going to have to offer numbers sufficient to get me interested.
The most likely outcome, and the one I’m working towards, is the expansion of the site in a manageable way so that the site is equipped to serve the community and the brand as best it can.
Thanks for your support, especially over the last 12 months. I hope can continue to work together into the future to enjoy the Saab brand and do our best to promote its interests here in cyberspace.

The Awkward answer – what you’d be buying if Saab….(I still can’t say it)

February 14, 2010 in Troll Stuff

I posted the awkward question during the week – What would you be buying if Saab….. (I can’t say it).

Thyl was kind enough to prepare a compilation of the answers that were provided in comments – a kind of post-apocalyptic Saaby portrait, of you.

Following are Thyl’s findings from your answers……

——

And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, the statistics (almost certainly, miscounted or misinterpreted at some stage, but well, here it goes anyway):

1. There was a strong preference to keep on driving used Saabs first and foremost: I stopped counting after 53 votes.

2. Volvo; 46 YES, 6 NO (diff = 40)

3. Alfa Romeo; 25 YES, 1 NO (diff = 24)

4. Subaru; 22 YES, 3 NO (diff = 19)

5. Audi; 23 YES, 10 NO (diff = 13)
5. LR/Jag; 13 YES

7. Mercedes: 15 YES, 4 NO (diff = 11)

8. BMW; 18 YES, 10 NO (diff = 10)

9. Citroen; 9 YES
9. VW; 13 YES, 4 NO (diff = 9

11. Mazda; 7 YES

12. Skoda; 8 YES, 2 NO (diff = 6)

13. Porsche; 5 YES
13. Lancia; 5 YES

other Japan: 17, other France: 7, other US: 11

And here are some of MY conclusions:

Some surprises here. Volvo so big, amazing, because their perception beyond being Skandinavian is quite different from Saab’s. It appears that this Swedishness is an important factor indeed!

Next surprise is Alfa Romeo. It might be deduced that for those people, driving fun and exterior design is more important than interior design/space, and reliability. So, Saab should improve the suspension?!

The same holds for Jaguar, I guess?

And then there is Citroen; also well known for their good riding performance, yet I would guess quite different from Alfa’s.

Also quite amazing the mentioning of sport cars. Not only Porsche, but also others.

And finally, almost exclusively European brands, even by those from America.

Specific cars mentioned several times: Volvo C30 (9), Skoda Superb (6), Alfa Romeo 159 (7); Citroen C6 (2?); Audi A2/4/Q5

Quite clearly, Saab drivers do not cater to the concept of “premium”, as the alternatives mentioned (even Dacia) impressively show.

To me, it appears that we could well agree on what makes a Saab a Saab, but could certainly not agree on what could replace it, because there are several different focusses for different people.

Video: Hirsch Performance exhaust system

February 14, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

I got my new exhaust system through the week and a few people asked for some video, hence the new video below.
The exhaust system, from SU Sponsors and Saab’s official tuning house, Hirsch Performance, is a 3-inch stainless steel cat-back system (meaning it goes from the catalytic converter back, it’s not a full system).
The video might not be what you expect. This is no monstrously loud system, but it’s very, very good. The exhaust system’s job is to get exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber as efficiently as possible, not be as loud as an AC/DC concert.
This one produces a slightly deeper note than the stock system but it’s not really any louder. What the system does very effectively is get the gases out quickly and subtly increase the power and responsiveness of the engine.
Yes, I’m one very happy camper :-)

——
The exhaust installation has increased the power a little and over all, the car is very quick now. One thing both I and my mechanic have noticed, however, is that under load, the clutch is slipping a little.
As you can see from my driveway, the clutch gets a fair workout every time the car is driven and given that it’s fairly old, the fact that it’s slipping a little should be no surprise.
I guess a heavier duty clutch will be the next thing on my shopping list…..

Memo to WBZTV in Massachusetts – Saab is NOT going out of business

February 14, 2010 in Saabology

This is one that might need some action, especially from those of you in the North-East United States.
From Kevin Q:
——

Imagine my disgust this morning when a promo for a WBZ-TV Boston news story aired that said and I quote:
“Would you buy a Saab, Saturn or Volvo if they’re about to disappear and is it a good idea to buy a car that’s going off the market?! Tune in on Monday at 5 PM to find out…”
And this story is set to air in probably THE most important market for Saabs in the United States. Boston, Massachusetts.
Either someone at this news station is seriously out of touch with reality or else they trying to increase ratings during the coming “Sweeps week”.
I went to their website and found the Contact Us link where I posted a tip that they should re-edit their story because the facts have changed… OK, Saturn is still DOA but Saab is saved and Volvo was never in any danger.
You may want to post your opinion here:
http://wbztv.com/contact

……and I really do recommend that you make use of that contact form. This is a report that should not go to air with that by-line in place because Saab is not going out of business and it’s wrong to suggest that they are.
Thanks to Kevin for the tip.
——
My letter:
Hello WBZ,
I was disturbed to hear that you are running a promotion for a report on Monday, and that promotion suggest that Saab Automobile may be going out of business.
This is not the case. Saab have been sold by General Motors to Spyker Cars. The transaction is due to close on Monday and Saab will carry on building cars.
Your promotion is inaccurate and does a disservice to the Saab dealers in Massachusetts who have already had such a difficult 12-18 months.
I hope that you will see fit to amend the promotion and the subsequent report to make it clear that Saab are not going out of business. Your region is a very important market for Saab and you’ll be hurting a number of businesses with this inaccuracy.
Regards
Steven Wade

Future Saabs – Hatches and Sonetts, please!

February 14, 2010 in Saabology

I’m going to use this post to tie together a few different articles from the past, as well as a couple of new ones.

A few weeks ago, I asked a question on behalf of Ny Teknik magazine in Sweden. They wanted to know what the people thought a Saab of the future should look like. What it should feature.

You responded here at SU with 95 comments and I’m sure Ny Teknik received a bunch more of them too. They’ve already published the first of those comments online and they’ll cover a few more in the near future as they get closer to putting together – with illustrations – what they believe to be ‘the people’s Saab’.
The first of the comments Ny Teknik published (via Googletrans)

Ny Tekniik has received 150 proposals from Saab enthusiasts around the world on what characterizes a true Saab.

Next week we show a drawing of the readers’ Dream-Saab.

Until then, on Wednesday when the next issue of the Ny Teknik coming out, we are publishing on the web a few excerpts of the many proposals received via email and comments on the call we made in new technology and the site via the site Saabsunited.com.

First up is Stephanie and Edward Karr from Cedar Rapids in Iowa, USA.

- Thank you for the opportunity to share my vision, writes Stephanie Karr and send us some photos of her and her Saab.

Stephanie drives a Saab 9-3 Hatchback, model year 1999. Edward has an 9-3 Sport Combi, model year 2008 and Stephanie’s mother is on her third Saab, now a 9-3 Convertible, model year 2007.

This is Stephanies wishlist for the future of Saab.

  1. Keep the best of Saab and skip the gimmicky stuff,
  2. A car is for driving, not fiddling with controls.
  3. Keep the idea of hatchback with three or five doors – practical and stylish and a signature for Saab.
  4. I love when other car owners look at me with skeptical eyes as I fill the back end and the car easily swallows everything.
  5. Turbo motors must remain. Efficient and fast.

You comments seemed to include a bunch of consistent themes:

  • Hatchback
  • Swedish character
  • Turbocharged and lightweight
  • Safety
  • Safety
  • Practicality

It’s not a surprising list as it pretty much sums up all of Saab’s greatest virtues from their golden periods in time.

It’ll be interesting to see the final outcome from Ny Teknik’s deliberations over what they’ve received as contributions.

——

As a prelude to that article, I wrote my own little thought piece on what I’d really love in a future Saab:

I also wonder if there might be room in a future Saab range for something they used to do incredibly well – a lightweight, compact, driver’s car.

In that article, I talked about going a different tack from what many of you suggested – offering minimal levels of equipment. Stripping the car down, essentially, to man and machine (or as close as you can get in this electronic age).

WIRED magazine seems to agree to an extent – calling yesterday for a return of the Saab Sonett:

What’s more, Saab, and Spyker, need a fun, cheap, entry-level car. What Saab currently offers is plenty impressive, true, but a new Sonett would be both impressive and fun. Never underestimate fun as a way to help you sell the rest of your brand. It might also bring younger buyers into showrooms……

So what would it look like? Around 2,200 pounds, 160 horsepower and a base price in the 24K range sounds about right. Throw in optional light racks that can bolt onto the front and modern versions of Halda trip calculators that can screw into the dash in front of the navigator’s chair and Spyker would have a lead pipe with which to bludgeon the competition on the rally course.

Click that link and read. Plenty of good thoughts there and the kind of car they describe is exactly what I’d love to buy in a new Saab.

In saying that, I recognise that such a car is totally not family-friendly and therefore won’t be a huge priority – but geez it would be fun :-)

As the author writes – how much money have Mazda made from the Miata over the last 20 years?

Let the Saab fans eat CAKE!!

February 14, 2010 in Saabology

Ever since Bard Eker made his comment about Marzipan Cake, there’s been a strange fascination with cakes as a fringe element of this whole Saab story. Strange but true.
There was a prominent cake element to the Saab Support Convoys, too. Here’s a selection for you. Click to enlarge (unfortunately, I can’t make it click-n-eat)

Despite the fact that they didn’t get to close the Saab deal, I hope Bard Eker has managed to get some marzipan cake in celebration of Saab’s survival. He and his friends played a large part in it.
Thanks to all for the cake photos and if I’ve missed yours, then please accept my apologies. I did try a thorough search prior to posting.

Introducing Saab 9-5 number 483,589

February 13, 2010 in Saabology

There were 483,593 Saab 9-5s manufactured between 1997 and February 1 this year. This is number 483,589. Only four were made after this one, and one of those has gone to the Saab Museum in Trollhattan.
Tims9-51.jpg
This fifth-last car to roll off the production line has just been purchased by a friend of mine, Tim R, a Trollhattan local by birth but a citizen of the world in his professional life as a commercial pilot.
Tims9-5-2.jpg
The car is fully loaded with everything except for inbuilt navigation.
Tims9-53.jpg
Not only is it the fifth-last of this generation 9-5 to be built, it was also the final Saab 9-5 of this generation to be delivered by ANA, the big Saab dealership in Trollhattan.
Tims9-54.jpg
Tims9-55.jpg
This car will join Tim’s magnificent Saab 9-3 Viggen in the garage and I’m sure he’ll be smiling a big wide smile no matter which of his Saabs he’s driving.
Congratulations Tim (and G’day to Johanna as well! Make sure you get a key, too! :-)

New ‘Rescued-Saab’ mosaic

February 13, 2010 in Saabology

The guys at rescue-saab.com were smart enough to also register Rescued-Saab.com at the same time, and they’re putting it to use now.
One of the things they’ve done is create a new mosaic with the photos people sent into them.
I’ve reproduced a small version below, but you can download a massive version of it – go find yourself in it – by clicking here.

Saab amongst top brands for positive internet ‘buzz’

February 13, 2010 in News

JD Power have been measuring the online traffic moving back and forth for various automotive brands and have named 8 brands has having the best social media ‘buzz’.
Automotive News have the explanation:

Kia, Saab and Chrysler.
If you know what those brands have in common, you’re in tune with the latest in automotive marketing.
The three were among the marques that consumers buzzed most positively about over online social media, such as blogs, chat rooms and Facebook.
In its annual Franchise Assessment Review on Thursday, J.D. Power and Associates ranked eight brands as “excellent” for the positive online buzz they generated in 2009: Audi, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Porsche, Saab and Suzuki.

And if there’s a thought in this story that I could echo in all-caps, it would be this….

The industry has to acknowledge that this is an exploding voice of the consumer.

Hear, hear!
I know that Saab and Spyker have acknowledged the support they received from owners and fans of the brand in the lead up to the deal with General Motors. That campaign, and the others around it, generated momentum but efforts will need to be made to build that momentum into something more.
I really hope they’re giving this some serious thought and trust that they are. Your ideas about their online presence, as the consumers of the company’s products, should definitely receive full consideration.

Summary – Spyker EGM, future plans and EIB loan approval

February 13, 2010 in News

As we’d hoped, today events saw all the final hurdles cleared before Spyker Cars proceed to closing the deal with General Motors for the acquisition of Saab Automobile. At the time the deal was signed, the closed was scheduled for “mid-February” with several mentions of Monday 15th as a closing date, so hopefully it will happen on Monday but it should be done by the end of next week at the latest.
Here’s a summary of what happened today.
——
SPYKER CARS EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
Spyker shareholders approve Saab acquisition
The Spyker Cars Extraordinary General Meeting took place in Zeewolde and at that meeting, shareholders approved the plan to acquire Saab Automobile with an overwhelming majority.
Possibility of listing on the London Stock Exchange
From a news release shown over at Etienne’s Saabhuy blog:

“Today’s meeting went very smoothly and we spent a lot of time explaining the transaction in great detail. We also announced that we are currently investigating the possibilities of listing Spyker at the London Stock Exchange by means of a dual listing and possibly in the future in Stockholm, in which case the listing in Amsterdam would eventually be terminated. However, I stress that this is still in the investigation phase and no such decision has been made yet.

Listing in these countries would open up far greater possibilities for capital raising for the new company.
Delay on changing the corporate name
From the same news release:

We postponed the decision to change the name of Spyker Cars N.V. to Saab Spyker Automobiles because we need to reach agreement with Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab AB on the possible use of the Saab trademark in our corporate name. We expect this issue to be resolved at Spyker’s Annual General Meeting, scheduled for April 22 2010.

Here’s hoping that Saab AB play ball and don’t make this overly difficult. I could almost understand Saab AB’s reservations, but if they were happy for an American-owned company to use it, then why not a Dutch-owned company?
Maybe because the American company just had it as a brand, not as the entire corporate identity, as would be the case for Saab Spyker.

SWEDISH NATIONAL DEBT OFFICE RECOMMENDS LOAN GUARANTEES
The Swedish government has confirmed the offer of loan guarantees made on January 26 following a recommendation from the Swedish National Debt Office.
The SNDO concluded that Saab’s business plan is plausible with acceptable levels of risk and that there is sufficient collateral to support the loan guarantees.
Following that news…..
EIB LOAN HAS BEEN APPROVED
Via a news release on the EIB website today:

EIB loan to Saab
Date: 12 February 2010
The EIB has confirmed the authorisation to conclude the EUR 400 m loan to SAAB Automobile AB in accordance with the terms and conditions approved by the Board of Directors on 21 October 2009 and to conclude the guarantee agreement with the Swedish National Debt Office, as the loan is subject to a state guarantee which the Swedisch Government approved on 26 January 2010. The EU Commission approved the Swedish state-guarantee for the Bank’s loan to SAAB on 8 February 2010.

——
Today’s events mean that everything is set up now, for the closing of the deal.
The challenge now is for Saab to start building, selling and designing cars for customers. They now get that chance, a chance to do things on their own terms, which is what we’ve all been hoping for, and fighting for, all along.
Congratulations to Victor Muller, the Spyker executive and to Jan-Ake Jonsson and Saab’s management team for a another successful day.
Time for cake?

Swedish government approve guarantees for Saab’s EIB loan

February 13, 2010 in News

The final hurdle prior to Spyker closing the Saab purchase deal was cleared today when the Swedish National Debt Office submitting a proposal to provide loan guarantees for Saab’s loan from the European Investment Bank.
From SvD

- Debt Office has said that the business plan is reasonable and there is collateral for the guarantee. There are risks, but they are acceptable, “said Olofsson.

Do a Googletrans of the SvD article and you’ll see there’s a whole section there where Maud takes a bow for being so thorough and another bit where SvD try and trip everything up by unveiling some sinister investor in the background. Both were too unpalatable for print here.
The bottom line:
The National Debt Office is satisfied that Saab’s business plan has a chance of success and they are also satisfied that there is stable ownership, and sufficient collateral in place to guarantee the loan.
The double-bottom line:
It’s all systems go, baby!!

EIB loan to Saab – approved

February 13, 2010 in News

It happened while I was sleeping (damn time zones!) and it’s already been noted in comments, but for those who haven’t seen it yet, from the EIB website:

EIB loan to Saab
Date: 12 February 2010
The EIB has confirmed the authorisation to conclude the EUR 400 m loan to SAAB Automobile AB in accordance with the terms and conditions approved by the Board of Directors on 21 October 2009 and to conclude the guarantee agreement with the Swedish National Debt Office, as the loan is subject to a state guarantee which the Swedisch Government approved on 26 January 2010. The EU Commission approved the Swedish state-guarantee for the Bank’s loan to SAAB on 8 February 2010.

Giddyup, baby!!
From Svenska Dagbladet:
Spykers CEO Victor Muller had just been told by the EIB when TT got hold of him.
- I’m very up and very happy that the biggest obstacle to the whole affair is now gone, “he said.
- Now we move quickly towards closing the deal. Probably becoming clear next week, “he continues.
But there are still a part of the negotiation with GM.
- It is the most technical stuff and the different conditions we have to discuss. As I see it, there are no substantial barriers remain, “he says.
TT: Are you going to celebrate today’s ruling?
- Yes, it is clear. Victor Muller. “I’m going home to my wife and children.”

Notes from the Spyker Cars Extraordinary General Meeting

February 12, 2010 in News

I wrote earlier that there were a few important events, and that hopefully they’d all happen today.
Whilst we continue to wait on the EIB and the SNDO, the Extraordinary General Meeting for shareholders in Spyker Cars has been held and as expected, the decisions made there have been favourable for the Saab transaction.
For those who read Dutch, there was a live-blog of the meeting that you can read for yourself.
For the rest of us, we’re fortunate enough that “Tim” has posted some notes from the meeting in comments:
——
Have been reading the webcast for the past two hours or so. Some highlights:

  • chairman Antonov isn’t present. JAJ and VM are there ;-)
  • Mr Hugenholtz said the EIB approval is expected today or early next week.
  • they will be partly rewriting the business plan. A new 92 is planned but needs extra funding.
  • According to VM SAAB UK and US were (highly) profitable.
  • No comments on his private financing company Tenacci.
  • JAJ says “Saab is an exciting brand with an exciting future”
  • VM says it will take at least 10 years to close the cap between Audi and SAAB.
  • Production is started in week 12.
  • Production first half year of 2010 15,000 cars. In 2010 60,000.

An other highlight: SAAB Spyker Automobiles N.V. is expected to be listed on the London and Stockholm stock exchanges. No listing in Amsterdam…
Votes:

  • Take over has been approved
  • New companyname has also been approved.

——
That’s another milestone achieved.
Congratulations to Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson on a successful outcome.
A full Googletrans of the live-blog is posted after the jump.

You make the news – Zeewolde, EIB and SNDO edition

February 12, 2010 in News

UPDATE below

There are three big things that we’re hoping for today.
Assuming that they don’t do announcements on the weekend (I could be wrong), it’d be nice if the Swedish National Debt Office and the European Investment Bank made some announcements prior to the closing date for the deal (Monday). They could do it Monday morning, I guess.
The other big event today is the Extraordinary General Meeting being held by Spyker Cars in Zeewolde. Shareholders will be voting on a number of issues (see the Agenda for the meeting here). I fully expect that meeting to progress smoothy, even if there are some questions asked about finance.
A press conference should be held after the EGM.

UPDATE
It appears that the shareholders of Spyker Cars have voted in favour of the acquisition. There was a live-blog of the shareholder meeting, in Dutch.
A Googletrans of the record states the following at the end:

Applause: shareholders vote massively in the acquisition.
Friday, February 12, 2010 12:54

Spyker will do a press conference when it’s all said and done.
Thanks to Robert P for the CoverItNow link.
——
Whilst you’re waiting for all that to happen, enjoy an article from Henk Noort, a psychologist and researcher from The Netherlands.
My googletrans might not be overly accurate, but I think you’ll get the picture.
—–>
On the day that I drove home in my first Saab convertible, Spyker CEO Victor Muller took on Saab…..
……Previously I had nothing to do with cars, but [the right] Saab changed me into a petrol head. The Saab convertible [has been] my wet dream for decades. The declining ‘saab’ of the brand did love cool, but when I saw the sovereign 9.3 2.0t, I was instantly in love again…..
……Friends and acquaintances constantly show me the disadvantages: it is not economical, maintenance and sensitive as a family car and totally inappropriate for our maritime climate. That may be so, but dreams are by definition irrational. Mullers dream calls in our risk averse culture zesje same envious reactions. I’d rather give him the benefit of the doubt.
……Dare to dream and to live up against oppression, is what life is. It inspires others to do the same. Mullers feat even brought our Prime Minister to his neck out by stabbing the daredevil publicly embrace. So no immediate consensus that Dutch scythe, rather take an example of Victor Muller. He began his entrepreneurship on credit by a Jaguar V12 expensive to buy. So he forced himself to realize his dreams. The course does not have to cost tons, funded my dream-Saab has the same effect. Chase your wildest dreams, dare to take an advance and put your pedal to the metal!

I’m getting an early night. I need one.

Auto Motor and Sport photoshop the 2012 Saab 9-3

February 12, 2010 in Saabology

As part of their big Saab special this week, Auto Motor and Sport commissioned a photoshop artist to draw what they could describe as being the next generation of the Saab 9-3.
Victor Muller has told us that it’s due in 2012, though it’s unclear if that means as a 2012 model (late 2011) or as a 2013 model (late 2012).
AMS2012Saab9-3front.jpg
The front takes the design language introduced in the new Saab 9-5 to a sharper level and all up, the proportions of this vehicle look very nice indeed.
At the back, you can see the all-important hatchback that’s been longed for by so many Saab fans for so long. Nice rear lights, too.
AMS2012Saab9-3rear.jpg
AMS have pretty good contacts in Trollhattan so hopefully this sketch is based on some really good intel.
Thanks to my Saabs United Historic Rally Team mate, J
