Saab 9-5x photochop

February 12, 2010 in Saabology

Thomas B has sent in his idea for a Saab 9-5x.
This is a model that’s been mentioned as part of Saab’s extended future plan and it’ll almost certainly be to the 9-5 range what the current Saab 9-3x is to the 9-3 range – a slightly tougher version of the wagon with XWD, body cladding, etc.
Thomas has obviously had to use a 9-5 sedan as a base for his work here and the clouds around the wheels obscure the down-low bodywork a little, but I think there’s enough here for you to get an idea.

Thanks to Thomas for the work, and the sharing of it!

Saab Support Convoys – wrap up

February 12, 2010 in Saabology

With the final two reports coming in from Japan yesterday, I think we can say that the final Saab Support Convoys have been run and done. It’s been an absolutely amazing effort by everybody.
This whole movement began with an idea from two Dutch Saab nuts late in 2009. They hoped to get maybe 200 cars to participate in a show of support for Saab on January 17th. When the idea was first conceived, it was thought that Saab’s fate would have been decided well before that date.
As it turned out, Saab’s future was still in the balance and these convoys played a crucial role in demonstrating just how much support there was for Saab around the world.
Whilst the Dutch convoy was being planned for the 17th January, there was a GM Board meeting scheduled for the 7th January, so a gathering in Detroit was hastily planned for January 5th, primarily through Saabhistory.com and supported here at SU and by Jalopnik and other sites.
The media coverage generated by that event proved to be a catalyst for the organisation of other Saab Support Convoys around the world. The Dutch planners provided a vision and the Detroit gathering provided an example of what could be done.
What followed was an outpouring of support for a car company that has been described by several publications as being without precedent in the motoring industry.
In total, we’ve had over 70 Saab Support Convoys and by my reckoning, we’ve had nearly 6,100 vehicles and many, many more people involved in those convoys.
The full list that I’ve got recorded is as follows:

If I’m missing anyone, please let me know as I do want to keep a full record. The convoys are all recorded together over at the Saab Campaigns website.
This was an amazing time where, by coming together with a common cause, we all managed to play a part in Saab’s continuing history.
Congratulations to all who were involved.

Thailand: land of the Saab 9000?

February 12, 2010 in Uncategorized

Following is some video from the Saab Support Convoy held in Thailand earlier this month.
One thing that struck me as I watched this video is that for a country with a presumably small Saab population, there sure seems to be a large proportion of Saab 9000s there in absolutely brilliant condition.
Magnificent.

Saab Support Convoys – Tokyo and Kanazawa, Japan – DONE!

February 12, 2010 in Saabology

Still more reports from Saab Support Convoys are filtering through. I think we might almost be at a stage where we can do a final tally of vehicles.
And just quietly, I believe we might see photos from some of the convoys on a larger stage some time soon :-) . Stay tuned.
I’ve already provided a few photos from the Saab Support Convoy in Nagoya, Japan. There were two more convoys held in Japan this month, however, so it’s time to recognise those events here.
——
Tokyo
There were 22 Saabs and 26 people present at the Tokyo SSC, which was held on February 7th.

Kanazawa
Around half a dozen vehicles and 11 hardy souls joined in the Kanazawa gathering, meeting in much harsher conditions than their counterparts in Tokyo, it seems.
Congratulations to all for joining in the celebrations!!

Update – Observed fuel economy after Maptuner stage 1 upgrade

February 12, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

The Chronology……
First, a mate of mine named John upgraded his 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero V6 using the new Maptuner plug-in software upgrade device from Maptun.
Next, he reported some observed fuel economy figures from a 500km trip he did in the car a short time afterwards.

Computer fuel consumption showed 7.4Ltrs/100km on arrival at Devonport (31.8mpg US and 38.2 mpg UK). Car was not moved until return journey, computer settings were not altered. On arrival in Hobart at 8pm on Saturday 23rd fuel consumption read 7.5 litres/100km (that’s 31.4mpg US and 37.7mpg UK).

The Question……
Some of you quite rightly asked at the time how that compares to his normal consumption. I did fire off an email to John about that, but he was unable to answer as he was in Western Australia on holidays.
Now returned, he’s sent me the following reply….
——

Fuel Consumption
Fuel consumption is about the same, maybe slightly better on highway driving and possibly slightly worse in town. Best consumption ever recorded on a similar trip (at similar cruising speed) was 7.1 litres/100klm but that was on the Launceston to Hobart leg with a good tail wind and no traffic interruptions. Previous trips to Devonport varied between 7.5 to 8.0 Litres/100klm.
I have not covered enough distance in suburban driving yet to really say what the difference is there, although the computer readings suggest it may be a little higher, which you might expect (perhaps to be fair I should factor in a very hilly home suburb).
The 7.4 litres/100klm figure I quoted for the northern trip (with ECU upgrade) had quite a few interruptions of slower traffic hence the slightly lower consumption perhaps.
I think the extra performance lends the car to being driven with a bit more gusto. Given normal driving I think consumption is going to be about the same. I’m very happy so far and even if there was a small increase it would be worth it!

——
You are now even more up to date :-)
I can personally vouch for the poor suburban figures we get here in Hobart. This is a very hilly city and John live up an even steeper and longer hill than what I do!

Report: Spyker receive loan guarantees from Swedish government

February 11, 2010 in News

HOLD YOUR HORSES!!!

E24 reports that the previous stories were a bit premature. Someone in the Swedish press jumped the gun (again).

Debt Office denies ‘yes’ to the Saab Spykeraffären “

2010-02-11 | Posted 11:40 | Updated 11:58

Riksgälden say yes to the Saab Spykeraffären in its final report to the Government, as reported by TV 4 News on Thursday. The data, however, belied by SNDO CIO Marja Long.

- We are not finished with the final examination of whether the conditions are met, “she told E24.

- When the review is completed, it will be handed over to the government that takes decisions on the state guarantees, continues Marja Long.

This is getting ridiculous.

The prior report is below……

——

Reports are starting to come through the Swedish news services saying that loan guarantees have now been confirmed by the Swedish government.

From TV4.se:

Riksgälden say yes to the Saab Spyker

Riksgälden say yes to the Saab Spykeraffären in its final report to the government.

- We judge that there is adequate security, “said Deputy Eric Sjulander to Nyhetskanalen.se.

Before the deal is finally completed, the Government must act on the matter and the European Investment Bank, EIB, approve loans of about four billion crowns.

Conservative valuation

Erik Sjulander, Deputy Director of guarantees and loans in the Debt Office.

- We have made a valuation which we hired expert help and had a conservative approach. That is, we use a low value and assume things that Saab no longer manufactures cars. And our assessment is that there is adequate security, “he Nyhetskanalen.se.

- If the government issues a loan guarantee so we think they should do it according to the recommendations we give in the report, says Erik Sjulander.

Hopefully this positive outcome will be the catalyst for an EIB decision in the very near term.

I’ll post more if it comes to hand.

Saab sale update – 11 February, 2010

February 11, 2010 in Saabology

As we’re nearing crunch time on the Saab sale, I figured it might be a good time to post an update as to the situation.

There are several important events that we’ll be waiting on over the next few days.

EIB Loan

The European Investment Bank approved Saab’s loan application back in October 2009, however a review has to be undertaken in order to approve Saab’s new ownership group, etc. It shouldn’t be a full review from scratch, however, but whilst the loan is primarily based on Saab’s business plan, the ownership structure is a material part of this and therefore the application has to reviewed in that light.

The European Union has given it’s tick of approval to the loan guarantees proposed by the Swedish government, which is one hurdle out of the way.

The only problem is that the Swedish National Debt Office hasn’t finished it’s final review of the Spyker ownership group, either. The Swedish government did make a preliminary offer of loan guarantees when the sale to Spyker was first announced, however these were subject to a satisfactory outcome of the full review.

Swedish National Debt Office staff have said they don’t foresee any big problems and they’re aware of the timetable.

So…..

  • European Union – done.
  • European Investment Bank – waiting
  • Swedish National Debt Office – waiting

Spyker

Spyker have had to do some tumble-turns in the last few weeks in order to get things…..in order.

Much to their own disappointment, arrangements have been made for the Antonovs to be been sidelined from their Spyker ownership stake.

Spyker initially secured funding from the Global Emerging Markets fund (GEM) for $25million, however it seems that in recent days, that line of credit has been replaced by convertible debt, provided by Hereema. GEM are a rather aggressive financier and their involvement may have been viewed as less than ideal by the powers that be.

Spyker still have to find another $24million, to be paid to GM in the middle of the year, but covering this amount is not considered to be a problem.

On February 12th, Spyker shareholders will sit in on an Extraordinary General Meeting, the agenda for which is included after the jump. The primary purpose of the EGM is twofold:

  1. To approve the proposed purchase of Saab Automobile
  2. To approve amendment to the company’s articles of association to accommodate a corporate name change, an increase in share capital and amendment to rights priorities.

It’s just a guess, but I’d say both of these should meet with the approval of shareholders.

——

So, in a nutshell, we’ve got two approvals yet to come, from the EIB and the Swedish Debt Office.

It’s be nice if they came in prior to voting at the Spyker EGM.

Then it’s on to closing the deal with GM on Monday 15th February.

Thursday Snippets – Aztek edition

February 11, 2010 in Saabology

Am trying – and loving – Google Buzz. Not having to log into a separate platform like Twitter is quite refreshing, although I still like Twitter too.

Photos and video to come later today, but as I sit here writing this, my Monte Carlo is getting fitted up with a beautiful 3-inch Hirsch Performance cat-back exhaust*.
Am I excited? Yes, I am.

A woman in Alabama refused to allow her son to use his father’s surname, which happens to be Saab.
She actually got thrown in jail for this. 5 days for each offence.
Don’t mess with the Saab, lady!

Off topic, but in tune with my advertising interest…..
I can’t believe that David E Davis got this column on Go Daddy’s superbowl commercial so darn wrong.
Actually, I don’t understand why he wrote it in the first place, but that’s beside the point.
David, the ads aren’t meant to compete with Snickers. They’re meant to get people familiar with web hosting (not you, I know) to go to the Go Daddy website to view the full ad and then look around at services. It’s sexploitation at its most basic, but it obviously works for Go Daddy as they’re back year after year.

Is the Nissan Juke the ugliest car since the Pontiac Aztek?
NissanJuke_04_600-600x400.jpg
And does it combine this most uncelebrated of monikers with being less functional than the Aztek at the same time?
You decide.
——
Disclosure: Hirsch Performance are the only company with whom I exchange advertising for product and this exhaust, along with the ECU I recieved last year, are payment-in-kind requested by me for advertising services at TS and SU.

Saab liquidators sit on hands, ready to move out

February 11, 2010 in News

TTELA have a good story in today’s paper, speaking about the actions (not) being taken by the liquidators appointed by GM to administer the wind down of Saab.

Saab, of course, is still under the legal control of the liquidators until the sale transaction is closed on Monday, February 15. Maybe they’ll be inundated with flowers by the locals on Valentine’s Day, just before they leave?

Cue the Googletrans

——

The liquidators ready to step aside
TROLLHÄTTAN

Spykers purchase of Saab may soon be done. But in the meantime, Saab is still headed by its liquidators.

- We are still formally at the front of the company,” says Peter Törngren, one of Saab’s liquidators.

It was 12 January when Peter Törngren was appointed liquidator Saab with the Englishman Stephen Taylor. At the moment, the settlement decision is still hanging heavily over the Saab.

Peter Törngren admits that it is a very special case.

- We must say that it is an unusual situation, to which a liquidator and make sure to follow the legal requirements (on the liquidation, prepared notes), and as far as possible, giving the company the opportunity to move forward. But this entire process, including reorganization, has been quite unusual, “said Peter Törngren.

He takes care of the formal and legal issues, and spend approximately two days a week in Trollhättan. My colleague, Stephen Taylor, who has the operational responsibility, “is in [Trollhattan] all the time.”

Around them are still Saab’s Senior Management, points out Peter Törngren.

- We need the expertise available. The difference is that normally comes all power from the Board, will now power from the liquidators,” he says.

Double-track for the liquidators have meant that they turn down the activity on the backburner. At the same time, it was important not to do things that you cannot reverse, given Saab’s future life.

If all goes as intended, Spyker will acquire Saab this month. February 15 has been mentioned as a possible date. Then walk Saab from the liquidation and the need for liquidators ceases.

- It is the day the deal closed.

And Peter Törngren do not mind the mission of the Saab will be shorter than originally intended.

- I think it’s good for the company and staff. There is a tremendous spirit in the organization. It feels really great, while it should be remembered that we are not in the target than, say Törngren.

Spyker Cars statement late on Monday night, taking a convertible loan of approximately SEK 185 million of Dutch Heerema Holding, was welcomed yesterday. The loan will cover one third of the price of GM. The alternative, to bring in money from the U.S. fund company, GEM, has previously faced criticism.

Now the share price has risen and Dutch share investors association VEB is satisfied.

- Heerema is a serious company in the offshore industry. We do not know much about the economy in that it is not listed. But we prefer Heerema in GEM, which is an aggressive hedge fund that takes well paid for their investments, “says Patrick Beijersbergen, chief economist at VEB, to TT.

Saab Car Club sticker design service available now

February 11, 2010 in Saabology

The man behind those brilliant Saab Support Convoy signs is at it again……
Gary M noted that the convoys have spawned a few new car clubs and so he got in touch with them to see if they’d be interested in some sticker designs for the club.
Below you can see the design he put together for the new SE Pennsylvania Saab Club, which I wrote about just yesterday.
SEPennSaabClubSticker.jpg
Any other clubs that might be interested in making use of Gary’s services should check out the page he’s set up for these and the SSC decals.
Gary is providing this design service free of charge to anyone interested, which is a magnificent gesture on his part and the decals themselves look absolutely fantastic.

Vladimir Antonov speaks on Fear and Loathing of Russian money

February 11, 2010 in News

Spyker investor and soon-to-be-former Chairman, Vladimir Antonov, has penned an editorial that appears in today’s New York Times.
As he alludes to in the article, Antonov was considered to be an undesirable element in the Saab deal and I’m sure the conversation between he and Victor Muller that led to his planned withdrawal from Spyker would have been an awkward one.
Antonov’s contention in the Op-Ed piece is that there is an undeserved fear of Russian money out there in the business world and the real world consequences in terms of this misplaced fear for the Saab deal could have been quite grave. Thankfully the perceived problems weren’t insurmountable.
At the end of January I covered an article from the Swedish news stating that the US government halted the Saab transaction:

The Swedish Gov stopped the deal after having the Secret Service and a private investigating firm eyeing the Antonovs and its money. These two made a report and that was forwarded to the FBI. It should prove strong links between the Antonovs and money laundering and organised crime.
GM’s board got a direct order from the US Government to stop the deal on the 18th.
This is confirmed by Hans Lindblad at the Finance Department, who also confirms that the Antonovs no longer have any position of influence at Spyker.

Now, when you read ‘Secret Service’ there, it means the Swedish equivalent, not the US version with the sunglasses, etc.
This story, or the Swedish part of it, at least, seems to be confirmed by Antonov in his Op-Ed.

…..someone noticed that 29.9 percent of Spyker’s shares belonged to my company. Surreal allegations of alleged “economic crimes,” “money laundering” and other false horror stories about my business emerged. The main aim of those who should have been worried about Saab’s survival now moved to ensure the exclusion of this “evil” Russian investor.
On Dec. 18, the deal between G.M. and Spyker was suspended. I was forced to give up my investment in Spyker because the Swedish government had threatened to veto the deal, insinuating that I had ties with criminal organizations. There was no proof, but rumors were spread in the media.

There’s nothing about the US government or the FBI, but then again it’s being written in a US paper, so not mentioning it could be appropriate. No need to ruffle feathers at this delicate stage of the game.
Antonov did appear at the commencement of Spyker’s manufacturing venture in Coventry just yesterday, perhaps a final official act before his shares will be acquired by Victor Muller next week in the closing of the Saab deal.
I’m sure he’d be quite keen to stay involved somehow. Here’s my suggestion.
Mr Antonov – there are Saab dealers all over the world who require floorplan financing and some of them are at risk of having to close their businesses right now, in spite of a deal being done for Saab’s sale.
Want to stay involved and help at the same time? Here’s your chance.

The awkward question: What would you be buying if Saab….. (I can’t say it)

February 10, 2010 in Troll Stuff

I received some mail about this and I’ve been holding off asking it because it seems a little bit macabre. PT alluded to it in comments on the Audi A5 Sportback post earlier, so I figured “why not?”
It is one of those interesting questions and once you get past the awkwardness of it all, I’m sure it’ll provide for some interesting answers.
The Saab deal looks incredibly promising and I’m really looking forward to seeing Saab under Spyker’s ownership and Victor Muller’s influence. I think the future is extremely bright.
However, picture life in an alternate universe where Saab is now being wound down and you’re being forced to re-think your vehicle purchase choices. It’s time to ‘fess up and spill the beans.
What would you be looking to buy if Saab were being closed down?
Are you holding out for the 9-1 and would therefore start looking at Minis, or the Audi A1?
Would you save some money and change tack completely, looking at the Hyundai Genesis Coupe?
Or would you just keep buying old Saabs until there were none left?
I think it’s a fairly open secret around here that Alfa Romeo occupies a pretty large space in my heart so I’d probably be looking to Italy for my future vehicle needs (and may still pick one up in the near term to accompany the Saab fleet).
I’ve also had a big soft spot for Jaguar ever since my Dad bought me a book on them around 25 years ago, so maybe one of those would occupy my future years as well.
The only other marque I’ve got on my must-own list at some stage is Porsche, but that one’s looking less and less likely as I can’t justify plowing $30K into a 30 year old car – plus maintenance.
So, if worse came to worst, where would you be looking?

Autoweek photoshop future Saabs

February 10, 2010 in Saabology

UPDATE – Apparently they’re older shots that we’ve featured before. I lose track of all the photos I see and post up here. Still fun.
——
AutoWeek had a one-pager on the Saab sale in their latest issue and MoodySaaber was kind enough to scan-and-send a copy of it via email.
I mentioned a few days ago that Auto Motor and Sport have a big Saab special in their latest issue and it’ll be interesting to compare these images to AMS’s as I’m pretty sure it’s the same agency doing the photochops for them both (Motor Forecast).
Here is the new 9-3 as they see it……(notice the door count there)
AutoWeekSaab9-3.jpg
….and as a special treat, their take on a new Sonett (put a roof on that sucka, please!).
AutoWeekSaabSonett.jpg
How close they might be to reality is anyone’s guess, but if these are the same as the AMS images then they might be reasonably close. Those Swedes have amazing contacts!

Audi A5 Sportback – don’t call it a hatch!

February 10, 2010 in Saabology

I’m pretty sure that if Saab released a hatchback version of the new Saab 9-5 or even the current 9-3, people would be whoopin it up all over the place.
Not so over at Audi.
It’s mesmerising the ladies…..
AudiA5sportbackGirl.jpg
And it’s apparently so steamy sexy that even the ground itself is sweating….
AudiA5sportbackgrate.jpg
Polo-neck guy is smiling….
AudiA5sportbackPolo.jpg
And yet despite all this newness, all this coupe-sedan-avant beauty and a whole new naming convention, there’s nary a photo of the actual new feature on the website.
I got all of these images from the a5sportback website after seeing an ad on a news website I frequent and getting curious about it. I actually made a point of going through the whole thing (almost) and was astounded that the main feature (for me) was shown so rarely.
Are we Saab fans really that different? Is the hatch really so disliked that even here in Australia – a land not that averse to the hatch – Audi feel like they shouldn’t show it?
The website instead focuses mostly on the design of the car, and yes Audi are the latest company to claim they’ve build a 4-door coupe. Or is that a 5-door coupe?
It’s no ugly duckling, though I’m not sure the front really sets it off that well.
AudiA5sportbackFront.jpg
AudiA5sportbackRear.jpg
But here’s one of only two shots I found on the site that actually feature the hatch.
AudiA5sportbackHatch.jpg
In a Saab ad, there’d most likely be a wide shot of the entire car with the hatch open so that you can see the full extent of the load capacity. These shots are all very close in, almost like they want to hide the car from view when the hatch is open.
Relevance?
Not much, I guess, but I just find it interesting how other companies develop and then promote new vehicles.
Why go to the trouble of developing a body style like this if you’re not going to max out the promotion of it?
1974-99-wagonback-advert-bw.jpg
