Saab Support Convoy, Memphis TN – DONE!

by Swade on February 8, 2010

Another weekend saw a few final Saab Support Convoys take place (I don’t think there’s any more scheduled, but I could be wrong).
One of those was the convoy in Memphis, Tennessee, where 15 cars and around 24 people gathered to celebrate Saab’s sale to Spyker and show their support for the company.
A note from Barry L:
——
In spite of the fact that “Super Bowl Sunday” is the most celebrated “holiday” in America (other than New Year’s Day), Memphis/Mid-South area SAAB owners and enthusiasts came together to show their support and celebration of SAAB’s INDEPENDENCE, and its saviour, Spyker.
Fifteen vehicles strong, we gathered in far east Memphis and discussed all matters related to SAAB, then drove 20 miles to the Pyramid Arena, on the banks of the Mississippi River. Check out the 1990 Saab 900…IMMACULATE!
There, we celebrated “SAAB Independence Day”….our first annual celebration of that event. January 26th of each year will be a day of celebration here in Memphis.
We had a great time. Thanks to all who participated and sacrificed a portion of this hallowed holiday in the USA.
BTW: On unanimous approval of our group, we will be forming a SAAB Club for the Memphis/Mid-South area. More details will be provided once finalised.
Note: Big thanks to Gary McConnell for the artwork.
Cheers,
Barry

I like the yellow convertible with the racing stripes.

Crikey! There’s a pyramid in Memphis?
Great Independence Day Banner folks… and that yellow vert looks like a mustang with those stripes….. I hope the engine is suitably muscled up as well :-)

I’m intrigued by how far the ancient egyptians and greeks managed to travelled…to TN, no less…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_Arena
“Its unique structure plays on the city’s namesake in Egypt, known for its ancient pyramids.”
It made for a poorly designed sports stadium and complete and total urban renewal mistake. It’s pretty much abandoned with no solid plans for a new tenant.
Anyhow …
Great job, Memphis Saabers. Griffin Up!

Nice! Well done.
Love the Pyramid. I hope that Memphis finds a use for it.

Ha! Yes. The two cities used their namesakes for all that it was worth! As above, Memphis is named for a similarly-place riverside city in Egypt (thanks to the French) and Nashville has been known as the “Athens of the South” since the 1800′s because it was an education center with the number of universities and colleges here fluctuating between 8 and 12.
Hey, don’t go thinking that the whole place is that way, we still have our share of Plain Jane architecture, too.

Love it or hate it, Pyramid Arena is a Memphis landmark, and for our purposes, THE perfect place to end our event (plenty of parking and no hassles from the police). We had fun and “REPRENSENTED” Memphis/Mid-South Area in conjunction with our SAAB brothers and sisters worldwide. I think, at the end of the day…that is all that matters.

Oh, yes…a Mustang GT challenged me on the roadway and I BLEW HIM AWAY in my Lynx Yellow Saab 9-3 Aero “GT”. It was bloody awesome.
..then i woke up. damn.

Bravo, Eggs !

yes, i can spell “represented” properly. oops.

Darn, I missed the announcement of a Memphis convoy, or I would have joined in. I am certainly interested in a SAAB club in the area.

18 Barry February 9, 2010 at 3:40 am

Dan…sorry you missed the announcement and event. Email me at (bwlanier15 AT aol DOT com) and I will put you on the list for our club.

Didn’t mean to sound so negative. Sorry. I spent 9 months in Memphis in 2006 watching the who-is-gonna-own-the-Pyramid drama unfold on nightly news. I do hope they find a viable long term tenant because it is truly an iconic structure.
Yes. The Pyramid was definitely *the* place for some great Saab convoy pictures. Lots of parking and a great background!

@barry
Hey…..reality is just an after market mod or two away.
Beautiful car!
;-D

What is there possibly to be negative about? We have a pyramid that is essentially unused that has yet to be completely paid for, and yet the city saw fit to build the FedEx Forum for the Grizzlies. And they are paying for that one, too. A fine use of public funds if I’ve ever seen one.
All I can say is I’m glad my tax dollars haven’t gone to either one. I live in another county/city.

So I do too !! Looks gorgeous like this

23 Barry February 10, 2010 at 3:47 am

Thank you Jono, Mike and Golfhunter for the compliments on my yellow ‘vert’. I know it is generally a sacrilege to even put a PINSTRIPE on a SAAB, but I gave this a try and liked it. …Totally changes the look of the car.

Well done! Impressive to see that saabistis still show their affection for the brand even when Spyker entered the scene,
