Dutch Saabers go for dealership #3

March 28, 2010 in News

They said it was madness when Ruud and Fernand opened up Saab Apeldoorn on April Fools Day 2009. Saab were at the beginning of sale process and the future of the brand was far from certain.
The guys had faith in the future, though. In fact, they had so much faith in the future that they opened up a second Saab dealership in Utrecht, in January 2010.
You might recall that in early January, Saab were under the control of liquidators and the situation was looking even more ominous than it was in April 2009. We were still a few weeks away from the Saab Support Convoys and GM’s standard line was no-one had come up with a deal suitable for purchasing Saab. They would be closed down.
So now, with two dealerships stitched up and Saab’s future model line assured, Ruud and Fernand are at it again. As they did in Utrecht, they’re taking over another property that’s been vacated by Smart, and turning it into their third Saab dealership.
Saab Arnhem will be located in Duiven, along the A12 – the main highway from The Hague to Germany. They’re hoping to have the new dealership kitted out and ready for the Dutch Saab 9-5 introduction in June this year.
Here’s a few small images to show the space they’ve secured. Congratulations to Ruud and Fernand for expanding again and I hope the faith you’ve shown in the Saab brand is repaid back to you tenfold.

  • Independent Saab strengthens executive team
  • New Business and Purchasing Directors appointed
  • Both tasked with forging new commercial partnerships

Trollhättan, Sweden: Saab Automobile is making two key executive appointments, effective 1 April, to exploit new business opportunities as it moves ahead as an independent company.

Martin Larsson, 41, former Executive Director – Purchasing, takes up a newly created role as Executive Director – Business Development, responsible for forging new commercial partnerships for the company.

MLarsson.jpg

He is succeeded by Kjell-Åke Eriksson, 58, who will lead the purchasing organization while remaining General Manager of Saab Sweden until a replacement is named.

KAEricsson.jpg

Announcing the directorial appointments today, Saab Automobile President and CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: “We are now up and running as an independent company with great opportunities to develop new commercial relations with businesses outside the General Motors organization.

“I have great confidence in both Martin and Kjell-Åke as they have the necessary experience, through working for Saab in Sweden and abroad, to build these new alliances.”

The management changes are part of a strengthening of the executive leadership team in Saab Automobile’s development as a stand-alone business. They follow the appointment last week of Adrian Hallmark as Executive Director, Sales.

Saab 9-5 TTiD XWD preliminary pricing

March 28, 2010 in News

Some of you may (or may not) have seen a little teaser of a comment a few days ago, by a guy know on site as TTAero.
He’d been to a customer presentation of the new Saab 9-5 in Sweden during the week and dropped a hint in comments about the fact that they mentioned TTiD/XWD pricing there.
The TTiD and XWD combination is one that many have been asking for since the TTiD first became available in the 2008 model year for the Saab 9-3. It wasn’t possible to get that combination in the 9-3 however, a fact that left many people disappointed.
So when the 9-5 came along, we all hoped that the holy grail of grip and frugality would be available and the good news seems to be that whilst it won’t be available overnight – it will happen. Call it the Pantene model.
So what of pricing, then?
TTAero has provided the following information, as gathered at the customer viewing in Sweden through the week….

  • 9-5 TTiD: 329.500 SEK
  • Add for a Vector: 22.000 SEK
  • Add for XWD: 24.000 SEK

Now all we need is an official date for the release of this model. Hopefully that will come soon.

Video: Mike Colleran on Autoline Detroit

March 27, 2010 in Uncategorized

I’ve always enjoyed John McElroy’s work. I think he and his mate, Pete DeLorenzo, can be a bit insular sometimes, but overall their work is usually pretty entertaining and informative.
Mike Colleran’s just appeared on Autoline Detroit, the more formal element of the Autoline collection of programs. It’s a 23 minute segment that I’m just heading over to watch right now.
I invite you to do the same. Click here to check it out.

Saab 9-3 Viggen at autocross – it’s not a BMW

March 27, 2010 in Saabology

I don’t know how many of you Saab owners have been autocrossing before. It seems to be the realm of the RWD owner, mostly. A quick scan of Dan’s Racing Ready archives will show plenty of BMWs and Miatas, amongst other things.
So when SU reader, Jose, turned up to a local autocross meeting in his Saab 9-3 Viggen Convertible, he was met with a few sniggers and a sign-in judge who actually said to him “You’re racing a Saab?! I don’t want to hear another Saaaaaab story when the times sheets come in. Its not a BMW!” as he completed his registration.
ViggenAcross1.jpg
Jose didn’t mind. In true Saab Spyker style he just got in there, got his hands dirty and did the job he came to do – competing in the autocross. The Viggen looked pretty darn good, too, don’t you agree?
ViggenAcross2.jpg
I’ll let Jose take the story from here…..

Afterwards the same organizers were giving out the trophies and announcing the winners. “In first place, Jose in a Saab?!?!” When I went up to receive my trophy, the douchebag again said, “You may have won first, but its still no BMW!” I calmly responded, “Thank god for that!”

ViggenAcross3.jpg
ViggenAcross4.jpg
The winning margin was just 1/10th of a second, but that’s enough.
My heartfelt congratulations to Jose for showing what a well-sorted Viggen can do and for putting some of the nay-sayers in their place.
And for looking so darn good in that Viggen whilst doing it, too :-)

Firefox users: create (or get) a Saab Persona

March 27, 2010 in Saabology

I just thought I’d pass on a groovy thing I’ve only recently learned about with a recent update of Firefox – Personas.
This basically just a browser background that you can download and apply for your Firefox installation. It means no more bland solid colors around your menus, etc. Yes, they can be a little busy and make your navigation buttons difficult to see if they’re not done right, but I’ve been using a few of these personas for a week or so and it’s a nice little add to the browser experience.
Saab9-5persona.JPG
Click here to check out the Firefox Personas page.
You can use the search bar to search for Saab personas. There’s not many of them at the moment. I’ve loaded up a Saab 9-5 persona on this computer but as you can see, it’s the old 9-5.
Perhaps there are some creative genii who can whip up some new ones and submit them to Firefox for approval?

Saab Australia distribution in the news

March 26, 2010 in News

Earlier this week I covered some preliminary news about Saab’s near-term distribution in Australia. That bulletin was a via a dealer message penned by Jan-Ake Jonsson and circulated via email.
That message indicated that in the near term, Saabs would continue to be sold via GM outlets and ordering systems would soon be in place to allow customers to order the 9-3 range of vehicles, including the new Saab 9-3x.
Go Auto has a story about Saab distribution today, covering the hunt for a non-GM importer and distributor. You’ll note that the previous story included nothing about importation or ordering of the Saab 9-5, which seems to be one of the reasons Go Auto have been asking questions about the future (i.e. when can people in Oz order a new 9-5).
The leading candidate to take on the role of Australian distributor seems to be Ateco. Go Auto justify this lead status by process of elimination. I’m not up with the importer situation here in Oz, but there seem to only be two other possibilities: Inchcape (who just do Subaru distribution and seemingly have little interest in expanding) and Sime Darby, for whom taking on Saab distribution would seemingly require a major reorganisation of their business.
Ateco currently do distribution for Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Fiat Commercial, Maserati and Ferrari and have a dealership network in place via Alfa and Citroen that would seemingly fit in with a Saaby clientele here in Oz.
The deal isn’t done yet, however, and in the meantime GM dealerships will continue to sell and service Saabs.

“Saab still intends to operate in Australia and New Zealand and is looking for a new distributor,” said Holden external communications director Emily Perry. “However, in the meantime, Holden is helping to facilitate this process to support the dealers and Saab customers manage the transition. The ongoing commitment from the dealers and our customers show the strength of Saab brand and the new products on the way.”

And isn’t it fantastic to see Emily back on the ground here in Australia?
If a new distributor is going to be signed up, it’s still forecast to be some time before the full transition is made to that group. Possibly as long as six months away, according to Go Auto.
Looks like we probably won’t be seeing any new 9-5s on Australian roads for some time yet.

Auto Motor and Sport photoshop a Saab 9-2

March 26, 2010 in Saabology

I’ll have a little more design-related stuff coming up soon, including a possible competition that I hope will prove to be a lot of fun.
In the meantime, our mates at Auto Motor and Sport have engaged a photoshopper to speculate on Victor Muller’s idea of a teardrop shaped smaller Saab.
They’ve called it a Saab 92 and it’s in their latest print issue (therefore no specific link available).
I received a scan from a Djup Strupe subscriber, which is reproduced below. Click to enlarge.
AMSSaab9-2.jpg
Unfortunately, that’s the only view we’ve got right now. It certainly looks interesting and I’d love to see more.
It tips its hat to the past but I don’t think there’s anything you call ‘retro’ about it.
Nice work.

Feedback on the 2.8T V6 reports

March 26, 2010 in Saabology

I emailed a few questions to Saab yesterday about the issues reported with the V6, which is used by Saab, although the issues reported were with the engine as used in the Cadillac SRX.

You can read about the issues here.

The questions and responses received from Magnus Hansson, Global Product Manager and all-round good bloke at Saab were as follows:

1) Do Cadillac run the same engine software in the SRX as what’ll be used in the 9-5 and 9-4x? Any reason for people to be concerned?

No, they will be different. For starters the brands have different requirements on driving charectaristics and secondly we need calibrations to cover more markets (than Cadillac).

Regarding concern. No, nothing I have seen or experienced in our car gives me any reasons to be concerned and in this specific case we will actually benefit from improvements that are made to SRX softwares and over all vehicle of course.

2) Is the 2.8 due for phase-out as stated in the Automobile article and if so, what will be the replacement?

That’s the writers own speculations. 2.8T is in our plans in the near future and we will meet all regulatory requirements as such of course. That said 2.8T will not live forever, however as to how we will replace it …… it is too premature for me to be specific about that, other than we will continue to cater to the more performance orientated customers out there interested in Saab.

——
It should be noted that Automobile magazine claimed the engine would be phased out due to emissions concerns. In contrast to that, I’d like to highlight a comment from ‘Johan’ – a guy with a lot experience and technical knowledge when it comes to Saab engineering:

The 2.8t in its latest version meets current and future exhaust emission standards. In Europe it meets Euro 5, and Euro 6 isn’t required until September 2014. It also quite common that an engine in a current car model isn’t reclassified for a newer emission standard until it’s required. An emission certification is engine, drivetrain and car model specific.

When Johan talks, I tend to listed very closely. There are a few Johans out there, of course, but hopefully the subject and nature of the conversation should help you recognise the right one.
——
My thanks to Magnus for the response.

Griffin Up on iTunes

March 25, 2010 in Saabology

I didn’t know this until just now, but the theme-for-a-Saab-sale is available on iTunes.
GriffinUpCover.jpgGriffin Up was written and recorded by a young Swede named David Blumberg and it quickly became the backing tune that accompanied Saab Support Convoys around the world.
Of course, the time of the convoys has passed but the song remains and personally, I think the song should get a major reprise mid-year if there ends up being a Saab Festival in Sweden. It represents a significant moment in Saab’s history and aside from all that…… it’s a darn good tune.
If you’ve got a spare buck+change in your pocket then I’d invite you to do as I just did and go get the official download on iTunes.
You’ll do your ears a favour and you’ll help out the guy who gave you the song that backed a movement.

[Saab] V6 in the news

March 25, 2010 in News

It wasn’t that long ago that Saab’s 2.8T V6 was featured in Wards Autos Top 10 engines.
This week, the engine’s been in the news again, albeit in different applications and in an indifferent light. The most prominent mention it gets is as a powerplant in the Cadillac SRX and it sure went off with a bang!!
The SRX was being test driven by one of our old mates, Gunnar Heinrich from Automobiles Deluxe. In a moment I’m sure he’d prefer is quickly forgotten, Gunnar filled the car up with fuel that was of a lesser grade than the manufacturer’s recommendation.
OK, that might end being slightly awkward as you explain to the marketing guy why the car is running a little rough and you can’t test it to the best of its ability.
But that’s not what happened. Read the full story here.

In no time at all I had dropped from a comfy 65 mph cruise into a sputtering stop with black smoke billowing from beneath the silver hood and a long oily trail in my wake…..
…..At some point during travel, between 2000-2500 rpm – or normal highway cruising speed – the engine’s management system had adjusted the air fuel mixture to work too lean causing a retarded spark – but crucially – it allowed for a simultaneous turbo boost which led to a catastrophic pressure build up in the cylinder chambers.
This caused cylinder six to fail quickly -leaving [me] stranded.

So basically, the fuel was below grade, the software had a brainfade and the end result was a scary one for the very well dressed Mr Heinrich as he hoped and prayed no-one plowed into his stationary SRX on the side of the highway.
The big question is why did this engine fail to adapt to the lower grade fuel with such catastrophic consequences? And does it use the same software as the Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-4x will when they appear with that engine?
I’ve emailed such questions to Saab and hopefully will get something I can pass on in the near future.
The good news is that GM are taking lessons from this incident and recalibrating their software and the adjustments they make will flow on to all new SRX’s being made.
——
Automobile magazine also drove a Cadillac SRX recently in a comparison test against an Audi Q5.
As part of that test, they had this to say:

The 2.8-liter, originally developed by Saab, is not long for this world, as it does not meet upcoming emissions requirements.

Now whilst the 2.8 is known to be a little thirsty, this talk of its impending doom is certainly news to me and would make for a very short life for an award winning engine.
And CarAdvice.com.au seems to have a contradictory story. Far from going out of production, they’re increasing the number made….

Strong demand for it’s V6 global engine will see Holden’s Port Melbourne engine plant increase production output over the next six months.

Holden announced its continued supply to Saab as part of that story and the 6,500 unit increase in production will mean 105,000 of these HFV6 engines will be made in Port Melbourne in 2010.

Thursday Snippets – The year finally begins edition

March 25, 2010 in Saabology

2010 finally starts for real.
Football season starts tonight :-)
——
Victor Muller has reduced his shareholding in Spyker in accordance with plans laid out a week or so ago, so as to maintain a direct ownership stake at less than 30%. A holding over 30% would have triggered a mandatory buy-out offer.
The excess shares have been sold to “a Cyprus-registered special purpose company” and thus, his holding is now just under 27%.
It all sounds reasonably creative to me, but within the law.
——
The interesting process of student clay modelling continues…..
SaabstudentModelling.jpg
——
Deutsche Welle get all negative:

Swedish carmaker Saab is back in business, making cars again under new management. But some experts worry its reincarnation may end as just another “sob” story…..Last year, Saab sold just under 40,000 cars – less than half of what it sold in 2008. In February, only 97 cars left dealers’ lots in the US, a key market.

Add DW to the list of people/media that we’ll have to write to when Saab start hitting their targets.
——
Victor Muller counters the negative stuff, via Reuters:

“Nobody sees us as a threat so everybody wants to talk with us,” Muller said. “And there are good chances that we will be supplying our technology to third parties, we’re not going to be just on the demand side of things,” he added.

——
I was in Melbourne last weekend. I wish I could have stayed for the week and watched the 100 years of Alfa Romeo celebrations in the lead up to the Melbourne Grand Prix……
alfa-romeo-club-day-carlton-3-625x468.jpg
——
And on another personal note, the other thing that begins tonight is the Hobart screening season for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Will hopefully get to that in the next week.

Saab looking to hire 500, and no, I can’t help

March 25, 2010 in News

The Saab 10-day tour continued yesterday with a visit by VM and JAJ to Paris, where they spoke with French Saab representatives.
While he was there, Victor Muller talked up Saab’s plans to increase production and the resulting need to increase the workforce.

Swedish carmaker Saab is set to boost output sixfold within about two years with the help of an extra 500 workers, the new owners Spyker Cars said in Paris on Wednesday….
….In 2009, the company made 20,000 cars and sold 39,000, drawing in part on stocks. Muller said that inventories were now low. The company intended to produce 120,000 cars a year in 2012, returning to the production level achieved in 2007, and to sell 50,000 to 55,000 cars this year.
The company expected to employ an extra 500 people towards the end of this year, taking the workforce to 4,000. The production capacity at the factory at Trollhattan in the south west of the country would be increased to produce slightly more than 50,000 cars per year.

I’m not sure where they get that 50,000 cars a year figure from. Trollhattan is capable of a capacity far in excess of that that already, but anyway…..
——
I’ve been getting around 15 emails a week from various people asking me to hook them up with someone at Saab to whom they can write seeking discussion about one opportunity or another.
Invariably, my answer has to be that I’m (regretfully) unable to help.
Yes, I do have contacts at Saab and those include people right at the very top of the company. However, those contacts won’t remain contacts for long if I were to send them multiple emails every week from third parties. I have to be very careful in order to treat those contacts with the discretion they deserve.
People who would like to work with Saab will need to contact Saab directly, I’m afraid. The appropriate address to do that via email seems difficult to nail down, which is why I’d look for a phone number to call.

New 20-inch wheels for Saab 9-5

March 25, 2010 in News

Saab were showing off the new Saab 9-5 to customers in Stockholm earlier this week and I’ve received some interesting photos from that event.
The photos show a new 20-inch wheel that we haven’t seen at motor shows or in vehicle publicity yet. Here’s the new wheel, below.
Saab9-5-20inch.JPG
Saab9-5-20inch2.JPG
Saab9-5-20inch3.JPG
——
Quite aggressive and very interesting, though perhaps such a nice big wheel does put a bit too much emphasis on the relatively small-looking brakes.
Maybe some of these are in order? Or these?
Our source’s comments from the display were quite encouraging:

Yesterday, I attended a SAAB event in Stockholm, where they presented the new 9-5 to some customers. There were three 9-5 Aero6 XWD on display, all in granite gray, available for us to sit in and examine. It’s an extraodinary car, I must say! Too bad my company lease 9-3SC ends in April next year, and the 9-5SC probably won’t be available until summer.

I’m sure something can be worked out with that lease if need be…….
Thanks for the comments and of course, the photos!!
