Saab 001 – the first of a new era – has left the line

March 25, 2010 in News

We saw photos of Saab 001 starting progress down the production line, but we never saw the finished product – until now.
Here’s a couple of the photos of the completed car, which I assume is going somewhere for safekeeping. Or not. These are still pre-production 9-5s and it’s my understanding that some will be used for assessing production quality, crash testing, etc
I’m not sure I can see this one being crash tested, though :-)

Cars being built for sale to customers include the full 9-3 range – sedan, sportcombi and convertible. Saab are estimating shipping of the 9-5 to customers will commence around June.

Reminder – IntSaab 2010 at Interlaken

March 24, 2010 in Saabology

I received an email from one of the guys organising IntSaab 2010 – the International meeting of Saab Clubs – which is going to be taking place in Interlaken, Switzerland.
The event is on from the 13th to the 15th August and prospective attendees should note there’s also a pre-IntSaab event from the 10th to the 13th in Black Forest, Germany. If you’re going to travel, you may as well make a week of it.
Registration for IntSaab is open until May 15th.

Interim news about Saab in Australia

March 24, 2010 in News

Saab are currently looking for a company to act as distributors for the Australian market. That doesn’t mean that absolutely nothing is happening in the meantime, however.
I’ve just received the following from Djup Strupe. It’s an internal document that gives some brief advice about what’s going on down under. The quotes below are attributed to Jan-Ake Jonsson.

With regard to Australia and New Zealand it is our intention continue with an appointment of an independent importer. We are continuing our search and hope to make an announcement very soon. In the meantime we will continue to work with Holden and do everything we can to facilitate continuation of business.
We are currently building momentum in our production and our commercial system to prepare ourselves for the challenges in 2010. Later this summer we will launch the new 9-5 Sedan and already within 16 months we will be ready to launch the new 9-5 SportCombi and the new 9-4X.
In the nearest future we need to put our focus on the competitive 9-3 range with the new 9-3X on top. We are hoping, with the help of Holden, to be able to put in place a mechanism to enable you to place orders for the 9-3 range and for the new 9-3X.

So it seems that Saab will continue to be sold through current channels for some time to come. Even if a new distributor is appointed, it’s hard to know how long it will be before they’re equipped to start appointing new dealers (if needed) and supporting the sale of Saab cars.
In the interim, I just hope that existing Saab salesmen are supported by their dealer principals and given some resources to push Saab’s story and the stock they might have in place. That stock is probably minimal given that there wasn’t many vehicles shipped during 2009.

Housekeeping – using search at SU

March 24, 2010 in Troll Stuff

Hi all,
I thought I’d give a quick tip on the search facilities available at Saabs United.
You may or may not have noticed, but I added a second search function in the left sidebar a month or so ago.
SU-search.jpg
The new search bar is the one at the top. It’s an internal text search facility that’s run by the software behind SU. As long as you know a good keyword from the story you’re trying to look for, that text search facility should work pretty well.
The more obscure the keyword, the better. Looking up stories that contain the word “Saab” won’t get you very far, but looking up the word “Christian” to see stories where Christian Von Koenigsegg might have been quoted should work pretty well.
It’s literally a text search of words used in stories here on SU.
The only catch is that it’s limited to SU. It won’t bring up any results from Trollhattan Saab or other sites used by the Google Search bar below it.
That second search bar, the Google Search, will search for documents from SU, TS, as well as several other Saab related sites that I’ve set within its parameters. I don’t find it to be particularly good, though.
Earlier today I tried a quick search through the Google search bar for a story called “Saab should go Open Source”. Despite putting the actual name of the story in the search bar, it failed to bring that story up on the results page.
Searching for “Open Source” using the text search brought up all stories that included those words, which was a few, but the story I was looking for turned up on the third page.
Anyway, I hope that helps you a little in finding some of those long lost stories. I know things can pass into the archives pretty quickly and they become difficult to find.

Wednesday Snippets – Saab listing edition

March 24, 2010 in News

A question, via comments today:

I was wondering if you can or have been keeping track of if/when Saab-Spyker stock will be listed, on what exchange and how much per share? Not sure about other Saab followers but I’d like to buy some stock.

And an answer (of sorts) via the New York Times:

Victor Muller, chief executive of Spyker Cars, the Dutch sports car maker that arranged to buy Saab from General Motors this year, said he hoped to list the company within a year, a Swedish newspaper reported Tuesday.
Mr. Muller, visiting a Saab factory that opened Monday after long uncertainty about the fate of the former G.M. unit, said that Saab would go public in Stockholm, London, or on both exchanges, Dagens Industri reported.

——
And whilst we’re quoting from big publications, here’s a snippet from the Wall Street Journal:

A fresh shipment of Saab cars, the first in nine months, will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships next week as the company starts anew under the ownership of Spyker Cars NV of the Netherlands.

I don’t have access to the full story, but those who do can find it here.
——
When someone adopts the username Saab 93B For Sale on Flickr, you can assume there’s a Saab 93B for sale somewhere in the world. I’m not sure where, but lovers of these old strokers might do well to find out as it sure looks like a pretty clean car.
Saab93Bforsale.jpg
——
Inside Line note the mention made of the Saab 9-5 SportCombi being made in 2011.
I think we’ve known that around here for some considerable time, but for those who like a source with a big name, here’s your article.
——
Some turbocharged Saabs – shock horror – have the misfortune of not having a turbo gauge installed.
BSR have a new turbo gauge available, which looks quite nifty and can switch between 5 different colors so it’ll match different interiors.
——
And for those who could do with some entertaining reading, the razor sharp Ezra Dyer has you covered.
In his most recent column, Dyer is contemplating a proposition to emulate the success of German carmakers by transforming the US state of Wisconsin into “New Germany”.

Wisconsin is a natural site for our New Germany. According to Wikipedia, which is hardly ever inaccurate, 42.6 percent of Wisconsin’s residents are of German ancestry. Which means that a large segment of the populace is already accustomed to eating schnitzel and listening to Rammstein. And the rest of them will get used to it…..

It’s great writing from Dyer, as always.
——
I already mentioned I’ve been car hunting recently. Well, after several weeks scouring the online ads all around the country, I think I’ve finally found one – 15 minutes from home.
Warning: It’s not Swedish.
Purchase hasn’t been made yet, but is looking highly likely.

Benelux meeting on today

March 24, 2010 in News

According to advice received in comments…..
Day 1 of the VM-JAJ Saab world tour will apparently be in Belgium, where they will be addressing Saab dealers in the Benelux market.
A few people have asked in comments if there’s a public schedule and a chance to meet with VM and JAJ to say thanks. I’d say not. These meetings are closed as they will be dealing with some market information that we’re not supposed to hear until Saab are ready to release it.
In effect, I believe these are meant to be private business meetings.
I believe they might be in the UK tomorrow.
——
And in an unrelated matter….
One dealer in Belgium has arranged for a little creative cross-promotion, shipping in a Spyker C8 Spyder (chassis #16) from a friendly colleague for display in their showroom.
Baltic Motors in Gent is showing the silver Spyder, which is selling for 159.000

Editorial: Early days for Saab future directions

March 23, 2010 in Editorial

Last night I wrote the following:

It’s been a veritable Muller love-fest for the last four weeks – and rightly so because there’s been much to celebrate and he’s at the heart of it – but today, March 22, is when the rubber hits the road for the new Saab.

…..so it seems fitting that the very next day, we saw the first writeup of the new Saab 9-5 since the Saab sale went through.
It was only a quick review of a pre-production model, but the positivity from Edmunds in that article was undeniably good food for the Saab lover’s soul.
If there’s been anything more encouraging than that, though, it’s the sense of direction we can deduce from VM’s comments in recent interviews.

  • A bi-turbo ‘Viggen’ model in the 9-5 range.
  • Higher spec trim options for customers
  • Better interior materials across the board in coming models.
  • A change from 9-3 and 9-5 designations to 93, 95 etc

These are just small insights, but they’re indicative of the fact that the wheels have already started turning in VM’s quest to give Saab a bit more of the personal touch. It’ll cost you something, but I believe it’s absolutely essential that Saab go down this path and provide more ways for people to get exactly what they want.
I’ve always loved cars that are different in some way. It’s one of the things that drew me to Saab in the first place. But even within the Saab range, I’ve always gravitated towards cars that were special in some way. I don’t think I’m the only one who acts this way. I’ve had a 99 Turbo (x2), a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo 16, a Saab 9-3 Viggen and then a Saab 9-3 Monte Carlo (SE Sport in other markets).
People look to these special edition models as hallmarks in a range of vehicles. They get people excited, even if they don’t end up buying them.
The last really special car Saab released was the 9-3 Turbo X in 2008. Prior to that it was the Saab 9-3 Viggen, the last model year for which was back in 2002. That’s a six-year stretch without one of these really aspirational models in the lineup*.
——
I remember the first Saab I drove after moving here to Tasmania in 1995. I was at University for three years initially and in no place to consider a new car. It was around 1998 that I took a mid-1980s Saab 9000 for a test drive. It was finished in Rose Quartz paint with a dark red leather interior. I can still remember the overwhelming sense of luxury I felt in that car with it’s magnificent leather aroma and the sense of warmth that the interior gave.
As good as Saabs have been since then, that sense of pure luxury has been missing – for me, at least. The 9-5 has come close on the occasions that I’ve driven one, but not quite.
——
The good news is that Saab seems to be heading back to a place where they’re giving people that feeling once again. It’ll take more than some trim options to do it, but it’s a start in terms of bringing back to Saab something that’s been lacking a little.
A sense of occasion.
Some inspiration. Anticipation.
Something to aspire to.
If you want to talk about what the German car companies have over most of their competition, it’s stuff like this. Some of it’s genuine, some it’s marketing, but it all adds up to sales and that means money to invest in new models.
All I can say is that I like the direction Saab’s taking in these early days.
Make them individual once again? Make them move our mind?
Yes please.
——
* Perhaps you could count the 20th Anniversary Convertible (Cerulean Edition in some markets) as one of these aspirational models, but I’m not sure

Videos – Saab ads we haven’t seen

March 23, 2010 in Uncategorized

There’s a reasonable chance that these shouldn’t be posted online. Yet. I guess there’s also a reasonable chance that they’re from the cutting room floor and won’t ever be used, but time will tell.
Watch them now whilst we have the opportunity and enjoy. They were originally posted at Vimeo and I’ve reproduced some stills from them below (just in case they’re removed from Vimeo).

Edmunds drive the Saab 9-5

March 23, 2010 in News

This isn’t a full road test. It’s more like it’s title says – a ‘First Look’ at the Saab 9-5.
But Edmunds did drive it and they have posted a fairly lengthy piece on their time in the car and their time with Victor Muller.
Notables…..

  • Viggen mentioned – check.
  • Customisation options for the future – check.
  • Showing them the Saab 9-1 sketch on his phone – check.

And then there’s the actual drive itself. Here’s a few quotes but you really do need to click on through and read it for yourself. It’s well worth it.

“It was so frustrating for Saab fanatics like me for so many years,” Muller says. “Not only did we have to wait 13 years for this next 9-5, but then we waited a ridiculous amount of time for four-wheel drive while GM Europe took whatever profits Saab was making and threw them into an Opel/Vauxhall black hole…..
……We feel embraced in Nordic-ness, the kind of alternative spirit that makes the cars of Trollhattan (Saab’s traditional home) so appealing…..
……”We are going to be working massively on perfecting the Saab interior experience and a big part of that is constantly improving the materials choices.” In fact, Muller tells us that not long after the introduction of the 2011 Saab 9-5 in the U.S. this summer, Saab will launch a personalization program much like the German carmakers offer……
……We find ourselves employing some body English here and there, as if we were channeling the spirits of Saab rally drivers Erik Carlsson and Stig Blomqvist, both notorious wild men at the wheel.
……the 2011 Saab 9-5 makes us think Victor Muller’s new car company can succeed. Get some sales going, make it possible to order the car in a slightly more luxurious specification, and then you can charge the prices that Audi does for its lavishly equipped U.S. models. Add the 9-5 2.0T model, Spyker Saab personalization packages, the SportCombi wagon in 2011, plus the high-performance Viggen, and then you’ve got a real car company.

Video – VM and Jan-Ake to tour 10 countries in 10 days

March 23, 2010 in News

Last month I did 10 flights in 7 days – beat that, gents!
The following video is actually a highlight piece from SVT, covering the first production vehicle to go down the line at Saab’s factory in Trollhattan. Most of it is in Swedish, but you’ll also hear from Victor Muller in English, talking about the tour that he’s about to do with Jan-Ake Jonsson to talk to dealer groups in various countries.
I know that the UK meeting will be on March 23 and that US dealers are meeting early next week, but am unsure what other countries they’ll be visiting (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland – would all have to be legitimate candidates, I think).

Enjoy the images!
And thanks to Matthias G for the link.

Monday Night Snippets

March 23, 2010 in Saabology

It’s great to be back…. but it’s even better to come back on a day with such fantastic news – Saab are back making cars again.
I know they have to get the basics out of the way first due to emissions and fuel economy regulations, but I hope the talk of a more performance oriented model (i.e. a Viggen model) is more than just a bit of spice in a newspaper article.
Personally speaking, I’ve always slanted towards the slightly more special models and I know I’m not the only one.
——
I love HDR photo processing when it’s done well.
I’m not particularly fond of this color on Saabs (and don’t be offended; I have a 9000 in this color in my driveway) and I’m definitely not keen on those wheels, but in this HDR reflection shot, everything just works so well.
HDRSaabreflection.jpg
——
Saab Cars North America are moving into their new home and there’s a rather large article about it in Oakland County’s Daily Tribune newspaper.
It’s the parallel stories of both the Saab sale and the quest to find a new place for Saab to live in the United States.
Definitely a worthwhile read.
——
THAT Saab 900 convertible is on show again.
The guy who took the photos of IronJoe’s 900 ‘vert for Eurotuner magazine has posted a collection of photos over at Flickr. I believe some of these are photos that weren’t used for the magazine. Definitely worth checking out as this is a sensational car.

Press Release: Newly-independent Saab Resumes Car Production

March 22, 2010 in News

  • Production resumes at Saab Automobile’s Trollhättan plant
  • First cars manufactured by Saab as an independent company
  • All-new Saab 9-5 sedan was first car down the line
  • Saab CEO, Spyker CEO, and Trollhättan Plant Director in attendance

Trollhättan, Sweden. The production lines at Saab Automobile’s state-of-the-art Trollhättan plant began rolling again today, heralding a new era for the Swedish premium car maker as an independent company. To mark the occasion, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller and Trollhättan Plant Director Gunnar Brunius took up positions on the line alongside assembly workers as the first batch of cars was built.

Saab9-5No1Official.jpg

Production at the Trollhättan plant was originally halted for seven weeks. Now, following the purchase of Saab Automobile AB by Spyker Cars NV, the first cars to be built by Saab as an independent company will soon be delivered to customers.

“Today’s resumption of production is a milestone in the history of our company” said Jan Åke Jonsson. “We are up and running as an independent manufacturer and I am delighted to share the experience on the line alongside our workforce. They have shown tremendous commitment to the company and we are all now focused on ramping up production to meet customer demand.”

First on the line today was an all-new Saab 9-5 sedan, destined to join a test fleet prior to the model’s official launch later this year. Further down the line was a Saab Convertible, now also being produced in Trollhättan as part of the concentration of Saab operations in Sweden. With the introduction of the new 9-5 SportCombi next year, a total of five model lines will be produced at the plant.

“We have a highly flexible, world-class facility here at Trollhättan,” said Plant Director Gunnar Brunius. “Our ability to build so many different models in one location improves plant utilization and will deliver valuable efficiency gains. With these state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated workforce, we are in excellent shape.”

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars said: “Everyone at Saab has worked extremely hard to reach this important point. Today production restarted with a new 9-5 first down the line – a fitting symbol that a new era has begun.”
