More Saab 9-1 photoshopping – this time by big boys

March 17, 2010 in Saabology

Just how far ahead of the curve are the punters here at Saabs United????
Weeks after we came through with renditions of a proposed Saab 9-1, the bigger magazines are now showing an illustration that was sent to them.
Both Car and Driver and Motor Authority are running this one with their own respective watermarks over it.
saab-9-1-preview-rendering_100308462_l.jpg
Both articles refer to Saab’s wishes to have a model in this segment and C&D even go so far as to refer to VM’s vision of a Saab 92-inspired vehicle, despite the fact that this rendering looks nothing like that.
It’s a nice effort, though, and something I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing in the metal. I’ll still take one of Jeff’s efforts from a few weeks ago, though.

Victor Muller to speak at Automotive News Europe conference in Bilbao, Spain

March 17, 2010 in News

If success were measured purely in media coverage and warm fuzzies, Saab would have to be the car company of 2010. I guess, in many ways, they are already the automotive story of 2010.
Victor Muller spoke at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit back in January and now he’s been tapped by the same people to address the Automotive News Europe Congress, which will be held in Bilbao, Spain, starting on June 22.

Join Automotive News Europe in Bilbao when top automotive executives address “Solutions After a Crises: Navigating out of a European Downturn.” Hear comprehensive pan-European solutions, alternatives and analysis for the most critical issues facing the industry today. Discussion topics include: Finding solutions through technological advances and environmental alternatives; making the right decisions after a crisis, including capacity adjustments and competition; and opportunities through collaboration for OEMs and suppliers. Get the information you need most.

I have a feeling the collaboration theme might be high on VM’s list.
We got some video of VM’s presentation in Detroit but as the Saab purchase transaction was still in progress at that time, VM had to be pretty tight lipped about things. Here’s hoping that the Spanish organisers will be as accommodating and that VM will be a lot more Saab focused now that he’s free to speak as he chooses.
Other speakers at the event include GM Europe’s Nick Reilly, John Fleming (head of Ford in Europe) and Henrik Fisker, who’s making cars with his own name on them.

Quotable: On Focus

March 17, 2010 in Saabology

Pete De Lorenzo from today’s AutoExtremist column:

It’s funny how it all works, isn’t it? Car companies that understand who they are and know exactly where they want to go – while staying true to their mission and never allowing themselves to lose focus – are the ones who are on an upward trajectory, attracting new customers by the day.
While the ones who are chasing rainbows – and niches they don’t belong in – are destined for a long, hot walk in the desert, lost in a swirling maelstrom of mediocrity.

He’s actually talking about Audi and BMW there, but it’s good advice for any car company.
Find what you’re good at, what your customers love – and stick to it.

Saab Cars North America to reside in Royal Oak, Michigan

March 17, 2010 in News

Another goal kicked for Saab, another item ticked off the list – however you want to describe it…..
The preparation work for this was done some time ago but it was all put on hold when GM decided to close things down. Now, with Saab sold, it’s all back on again.
Here’s the press release and there’s more about the move below:
——
Saab Cars North America Announces New Headquarters
DETROIT, March 16 /PRNewswire/ –

  • Saab Cars North America to reside in Royal Oak, Michigan
  • Company to invest $2.4 million to enhance North American Sales and Marketing Operations
  • Over 2000 jobs to be retained or created over the next few years

Saab Cars North America today announced that its headquarters will reside in Royal Oak, Michigan, creating or retaining approximately 2000 jobs in North America. The company will invest $2.4 million to enhance its U.S. Sales and Marketing operations. Saab Automobile AB was recently purchased by the Dutch automobile company, Spyker Cars NV.
“Saab Cars North America appreciates the assistance and cooperation of the City of Royal Oak and the Governor’s office in helping make the company’s decision a reality during tough economic times,” said Mike Colleran, President and COO, Saab Cars North America. “As a direct result in acquiring local and state assistance, we look forward to renewing our U.S. presence as an independent, premium luxury automotive brand with Swedish heritage while maintaining our loyal following and potentially attracting new customers.”
“From advanced batteries to homeland security and life sciences to building materials, companies across all industry sectors are choosing Michigan for their growth plans, because our state is a great state in which to do business,” Governor Granholm said.
The State of Michigan Economic Development Council worked with the City of Royal Oak to secure the project. Governor Granholm approved a state tax credit, with local contribution by the City of Royal Oak, for a total benefit of $1.4 million over five years to encourage the company to expand in Michigan versus other competing states.
“This is tremendous news for Oakland County. While the county continues to transform into a knowledge-based economy through my Emerging Sectors, Medical Main Street and Automation Alley initiatives, the automobile industry still employs a large segment of our workforce. This affirms that we remain the global center of the auto industry. Credit is due to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, my Economic Development Department and Royal Oak,” said L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County Executive.
Saab entered the auto business in 1949 with the first model 92. Its aerodynamic shape and advanced technology drew from the company’s roots as an aircraft maker and helped create what was to become a loyal and passionate customer base. GM acquired a 50 percent stake in Saab in 1990 and acquired the balance of Saab in 2000. As part of its strategy to focus on its four strongest brands in the U.S., GM began seeking a buyer for Saab in January 2009, a concerted effort that led to Spyker Cars NV purchasing Saab Automobile AB from General Motors on February 23, 2010.
——
Here’s some more background information from The Detroit News:

Lansing — A state economic development panel today unanimously approved a tax credit to help the cast-off Saab brand open its North American headquarters in Royal Oak.
The Michigan Economic Growth Authority approved for Saab Cars North America Inc, a $1.2 million high-technology employment tax break over five years. The company intends to hire 60 employees with an average wage of about $88,000 a year at an industrial building at 4327 Delemere Court between 14 Mile and Normandy, for a total investment of $2.4 million.
Mike Colleran, chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America, said the sale was closed on the property last month and Saab employees will move in by the end of the month.
He said the company will have about a half-billion dollars a year in sales in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Michigan continues to be the hub of the North American auto industry, Colleran said.
“There are great suppliers here, and the human resources here are second to none,” he said.
The tax break comes less than a month after General Motors Co. finalized the sale of Saab to Dutch luxury automaker Spyker Cars NV in a $74 million deal.
Its headquarters will house sales and marketing operations, advertising, technical assistance and customer support along with possibly parts testing and vehicle evaluations. Other operations in Royal Oak would include human resources, accounting, IT, legal and clerical staff. Eventually, distribution for Canada and Mexico could be based out of Royal Oak.

My emphasis added, there. Interesting.

Saab O The Week – Saab 99 in Netherlands

March 16, 2010 in Saabology

One of our regular visitors here at SU, Robert P, recently headed down to take a look at this red 1971 Saab 99 and liked it so much that he bought it on the spot.
It might have helped that one of his companions on the trip was a 99 enthusiast, but still, it looks like he would have needed little prompting – he’s picked up a beauty here.
That companion on the trip was the guy who sent the photo in – G’day Nic – and I thought it was most fitting to become this week’s Saab O The Week.
page12-1004-full.jpg
——
This photo brought back a lot of memories for me.
I’ve never shown the car here because I never took any photos of it, but my first ever Saab was a 1972 Saab 99E finished in exactly the same colour as this one. I bought it in 1998 or 99. I don’t have any decent photos because it was before the digital camera age and I only had it a short time before my ex-Mrs wrote it off.
I still have the grille with the blue Saab badge hanging on the wall in my garage.
So congratulations, Robert. Enjoy this classic for as long as you can and don’t let my ex-Mrs anywhere near it!

March 16, 2010 in News

Seems Saab managed to pinch one back from the Germans.

Huzzah!

CAR Magazine talk with VM and JAJ

March 16, 2010 in News

CAR Magazine sat down recently for a call with Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson from Saab.
There’s not a lot here that we haven’t already heard – the phrase ‘fully funded business plan’ appears prominently – but it’s good to hear it all again and confirm what we already know: the guys at the top are focused.
Some notables:

JAJ: During these past 15-18 months, we’ve had numerous interest from big OEMs to small suppliers all over the world who want to work with us. It gives us great confidence that we’ll be able to select the right partner for the Saab brand. Within the GM framework we’ve been limited to use what’s within GM. Now we can decide who we want to work with.’

VM: In the past, manufacturers clung onto their own technology and were not inclined to share. That’s one great change. Everyone now wants to share everything with everyone. That’s new. There couldn’t have been a better time for Saab to stand on its own two feet and say, “Here we are, we have something to offer you – we can reduce your breakeven point and bring things to the table”.’

VM: My experienced guess at how much it would cost to put the Aero X into production is that it will set you back

GMAC to provide financing for Saab

March 16, 2010 in News

Here’s the press release that came out while I was sleeping. The importance of this announcement cannot be underestimated.

——

GMAC to provide financing for Saab dealers and customers

* GMAC chosen as financial services provider to Saab Automobile
* Preferred source of wholesale and retail financing for dealers and customers

Trollhättan. Following its successful launch as an independent company, Saab Automobile announced today that it has selected GMAC Financial Services as the preferred provider of wholesale and retail financial services for qualified Saab dealers and customers in many different countries around the world.

Jan Åke Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB said: “Today’s announcement is excellent news for the Saab organization as a whole and also for Saab’s customers. It not only makes available competitive financing, but also provides valuable continuity for the dealer network which already uses GMAC services.”

Bill Muir, GMAC President said: “We are delighted to be able to build on our strong relationships with Saab dealers and customers, and we look forward to working with Saab as it begins a new chapter in its history.”

——

Saab had so much going against it in 2009. A perception in the public eye that it was closed, lack of finance for dealers. Lack of production volume. Lack of leasing for customers.

This announcement is a BIG fix for the finance component for dealers and customers.

Great stuff!

US Auto Show News

March 15, 2010 in News

The Saab 9-5 has recently been on show at the Minneapolis Auto Show, in Minnesota.
I received some email from Peter B, who described the car as ‘outstanding’ but unfortunately for him, the car was locked during his visit and couldn’t poke around inside.
Matt G also attended the show recently and has posted some images from the show on Flickr.
SaabMinneapolisShow.jpg
They must have a few of those ‘sets’ for use at Auto Shows. It’s a very attractive setting.

The New York Auto Show is coming up and look at what’s made it on to the front page of the website!
NYAutoShow.jpg
That’s a nice coup for Spyker!
One of our regulars here at SU, Jeff, will be attending the New York show on SU’s behalf and reporting back on what sees and hears there.
Hopefully there will be some good executive representation there for Jeff to talk to.

Saab 9-5 vs BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo

March 15, 2010 in Saabology

There have been a few discussions already here and in the Swedish press about the pricing of the new Saab 9-5.
Jaap O has done a little homework for us all and as you can see, the 9-5 stacks up quite competitively. Something like this might have helped out Dagens Industri last week.
It’s interesting to see the different prices charged for different options by different companies. How come Audi’s alarm is so much cheaper than everyone else’s? And why is BMW’s Bluetooth so much more?
Anyway, questions like those aside, what this points out is that the Saab 9-5 is indeed competitively priced in the Swedish market, especially after you factor in common options and especially against the German competition that Saab sees as its target.
My thanks to Jaap for the work done. Click to enlarge.

An Open Letter to Victor Muller

March 15, 2010 in Editorial

Hey Victor,
In the past, I’ve written open letters to head honchos at Saab, usually in the USA. Jay Spenchian got one, as did Steve Shannon. Those open letters were written out of concern that those guys didn’t really ‘get’ the Saab brand and given that they were in charge of Saab’s single biggest market, it was felt that maybe they needed an introduction to the brand and the customers they would be serving.
This is a little different. First, you’re not in charge of a particular market, you’re in charge of the whole Saab Spyker operation. Second, I’d never actually met Jay Spenchian or Steve Shannon before I wrote to them, whereas I have had the pleasure of meeting you personally. And finally, You’re a different kettle of fish in that you don’t hold the same fears for us when it comes to understanding what Saab might be all about. There’s a feeling that you do already “get it” when it comes to Saab.
Nevertheless, the custom exists and there’s no more poignant a time in SU’s and Saab’s history than now for me to put figurative pen to paper and craft an exhortation.
Officially – Welcome to the family
One thing most of us know about tight family units is that they stick together, through thick and thin. And I don’t think times get any thinner for a business/family than what they did for Saab in the last 15 months.
Whilst there were some skeptics, most of us welcomed the Koenigsegg Group with a lot of optimism, open arms and a great deal of excitement. It wasn’t until that deal fell through, however, that we really felt the threat to Saab’s continued existence and with GM’s very serious threats to close the company down, it was time for a family meeting.

Sunday Night Snippets – crash edition

March 14, 2010 in Saabology

No. I didn’t crash. But I think I might be ‘crashing’ thanks to a flu passed on by the young bloke.

——

It’s been a great weekend, though, despite the crashing. Beautiful weather, a great lunch with some friends yesterday and half-decent car show today.

The Shannons Insurance car show is an annual event here in Hobart. Unfortunately, it tends to draw a huge Holden-Ford attendance and little else. It was around 70% domestic this year, with around 15%-20% being imported muscle cars from the US or old vintage stuff that was pre-1950.

That leaves around 10% of the show as being ‘interesting’ for me, with a few Minis, three Ferraris, some Porsches and Jags to keep me looking. I might have to call Shannons and suggest a Euro show in addition to this big one as I know there’s heaps of Euro owners out there that don’t bother with this show.

The most interesting car there today, for me, was this customised V8 Volvo, which really was in incredible condition. Please pardon the crappy cameraphone pics.

Image026.jpg

Image025.jpg

——

Speaking of crashing, though, check out this Pug after some ice fell on it, from a rooftop in Gothenburg.

SnowCrash.jpg

——

The other thing that’s kept me of SU this weekend is Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (published as Män som hatar kvinnor in Sweden).

If you’ve not come across it, look for it in large quantities at almost any airport bookshop anywhere in the world. A few weeks ago I did 10 flights in 7 days and saw it just about everywhere. So I bought it.

It’s the first in a three-book series by a now deceased Swedish author and today, I rushed out and bought the second book. The first was that good.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend…..

Saab on GT5? Vote now.

March 14, 2010 in Saabology

For the gamers out there…..
The Gran Tourismo game franchise is one of those that both delights and tortures its followers. The game is so good that its still regarded as possibly the finest driving simulator there is. But new versions of the game have been plagued by delays and fans left wanting.
The game was due to be released this month, but Sony announced yet another delay and as far as I can tell, there’s still no firm release date in the public domain.
That gives the public a little more opportunity to try and have a say in what cars are included in the game.
The gaming industry is one that does manage a bit of interaction with fans. Recently, there was the Forzalopnik competition run by Jalopnik, where we helped get a Saab 99 Turbo included in an update pack for Forza, a driving game on the Xbox 360 platform.
So…. if you’re a Playstation gamer and you’re a Saab fan, please consider heading here and placing your vote.
There’s a Pike’s Peak edition Viggen on the first page, along with the Saab 9-3 Turbo X. The Saab 9-5 Aero is on the second page, along with the original Saab Sonett, the Saab 9000 Turbo and Aero – and the Saab Aero-X concept car.
Again, go here to vote.
