Saab 9-5 at the Dallas Auto Show

by Swade on March 6, 2010

The Saab 9-5 is currently on display at the Dallas Auto Show, which is on at the Dallas Convention Center until Sunday, March 7.
David was kind enough to send us a few images from the show, along with the following comments:

I just got back from the Dallas Auto Show. I got to see the new 9-5 in the flesh (well, ventilated cow hide…)
Very impressed! The car. The stand. This was the best stand SAAB has ever had at the Dallas show. It was about as far away from GM as possible. I went with a Lexus owning friend who is now considering the 9-5. SAAB is starting off on a good foot.
Enjoy the photos!

Cheers, David!

its good to see the 9-5 making appearances at non-major shows. wish it would have come to houston.

With Lexus and Toyota getting so much unbelievable bad press in the United States this may be a perfect time for Saab to snag Lexus owners looking for something with a bit more passion and a lot more safety.
The most spectacular story involves a new Lexus that crashed itself, killing a family of four here in the states.

Arrgh ! They missed Chicago by 3 weeks. No offense to Texas but Saab sells a lot of cars in the Chicago/Milwaukee area probably 2nd only to the Northeast. I really wanted to see the 9-5 and see how it measured up. For the record I wasn’t impressed by anything at the show except for the Lotus Evora.

Question: how many new 9-5′s have been built? Thanks.

5 GML March 6, 2010 at 4:04 am

In response to Lexus and Toyota owners looking at Saabs:
I think a prerequisite of owning a Saab is you must know what the little “N” on your automatic transmission means.
Frankly, I would hate for Saab to become so “refined” (sarcasm) that it practically drives itself and breeds soulless automotive appliances and numb passengers.
Every car should have a manual option and I would frankly replace the ignition button with a proper key hole (in the center, of course).

I know I’ve campaigned for Saab to commit some marketing funds for the exclusive use of letting people know Saab isn’t dead and very much alive. However, nothing beats word of mouth and if Saab continues with these solid auto show displays then the word WILL get around.
Well done boys.

This appears to be the European version as it seems to miss the orange side markings which are mandatory in the US, no?

8 Dan March 6, 2010 at 4:08 am

Of course! My argument is that Lexus owners may now become anxious about their cars that park themselves and drive themselves and turn themselves and accelerate themselves and crash themselves they may wish to return to a true driving experience provided by Saab and others.

I am hoping it comes to Calgary for the auto show next week.

Actually one should not be sarcastic to Toyota/Lexus because of some tragic tecnical failures that, I think, could appear at most or all car-marks.
But anyway (couldn

This deal is such a joke…
In a meeting with journalists at Geneva’s ongoing motor show, Antonov confirmed that he aims to formally own the Swedish car maker and claimed that if he remained unable to lend the financing, Spyker would struggle to raise the funds to complete the deal.
When asked if he was prepared to provide the outstanding $24 million which Spyker is due to hand over to General Motors on July 15th, Antonov replied:
“Absolutely. If I am not allowed to then Victor (Muller) could be in a tough situation,” according to the newspaper.

Off topic but…
2010 9-3 Pricing has just been released.
-Pricing reduced on all models.
-Overall model count has been reduced to 9 from 14.
-Elimination of the 2.8T powerplant.

Well, I guess I’m glad the V6 is gone. Hopefully this means more emphasis will be placed on higher output turbo fours.

14 Kroum March 6, 2010 at 5:10 am

I have been lusting after the Lotus Evora, too. :)

15 Reddingius March 6, 2010 at 5:12 am

Such a beautiful car, especially in the second picture. By the way: How can I post pictures in my comments? I drew a new 92 proposal and I’d like to share it with you guys.

I am itching to see the new 9-5. Any ideas if Saab will show cars at the Vancouver Auto show at the end of this month?
Style wise if you compare the new 9-5 to the new 5 Series Bimmer the Saab wins hands down!

17 Chris Carrier March 6, 2010 at 7:13 am

IMO, the v6 is gone from the 9-3 line so it would more distinguish the new 9-5. Potential buyers would rightly wonder why the higher end 9-5 had the same engine as an Aero 9-3.
However, as someone who owns a ’09 9-3 v6 Aero, it’s fine with me since no new 9-3 until 2012 will perform like mine. :) Also, since the 9-5 will have it, tuning advancements will continue.

Tell me about it! I was SOOOO looking forward to seeing it in Chicago. Without any Saabs there, I had no motivation to go at all. It would have been my first auto show.

19 BostonSAABer March 6, 2010 at 7:50 am

Looks nice but when will SAAB lend some 9-5′s to the automotive press so that we can get some REAL reviews? SAAB could use some exciting press that will reach mainstream audiences.

20 Jpokrandt March 6, 2010 at 8:36 am

My friend that went to the show with me called the dealer and got our names on the list to get behind the ropes. He’s a powertrain engineer by trade and a certifed Porsche guy. His daily driver is a 1997 993 with 157,000 miles on the clock. He’s gotten the Lotus bug because he says the water cooled Porsches are too soft. It really was a very impressive piece. Fit and finish were way beyond what you would expect from Lotus. The only downside is he can get his 2 small kids in the Porsche, the +2 in the Evora is even smaller than that.

Re: Dropping of the V6
Share mixed feelings on this one:Happy that my Turbo X will retain some cachet; but anxious that anybody looking for a high-performance (not stratospherically priced AMG nor M Series)mid-sized Euro sedan will be left for the next two model years to choose between an S4 or a 335 (’til 2012, as you say — and we hope!)
[Kroum: agree?]

Any idea on what other big shows Saab will be at? A friend wants to go to the NYC show in April. If Saab are there with the 9-5 then I’m totally going.

We will see. $24 million is a relatively small amount for Automotive Companies and Big Banks. This is a good time to relaunch Saab. All Saab needs is great cars and it looks like the 2010 9-5 is a great car.
Just a thought.

24 100%Saab March 6, 2010 at 10:30 am

Well they missed me by one week, since I was in Dallas last weekend. Help, I’m stuck in Lubbock and I can’t get out this weekend. It’s a job thing. Pictures look great! Enjoy.

The “face” of the new 9-5 often puts a smile on my face i realised. It is a pretty big “grin” as most modern cars. But the thing is it looks neither agressive or silly (you know what brands i talk about;) it just looks lika a self confident “nice chap” as the english would say. It probably looks like it deserves respect seen from the rear mirror but without playing the intimidation card. Is anyone with me or is this just me projecting things on the car? :-)

26 Montahue March 6, 2010 at 11:43 am

Yes me to. However nice the feel of a V6 is it doesnt smell saab, there is something wrong with that whole concept. It was never ment for a V6 to live inside a Saab, it was not in the beginning and it certanly is not nowdays or in the future.

27 SouthSider March 6, 2010 at 11:47 am

I spoke to a Saab product specialist who was working a different brand with Saab’s absence in Chicago. It was his impression that Saab would be in New York.

28 Montahue March 6, 2010 at 11:50 am

The sad part with the lotus evera is that it looks like the non kit-car version of a spyker car.

29 baas900i March 6, 2010 at 12:13 pm

and very sad.

30 BostonSAABER March 6, 2010 at 1:12 pm

I think the new 9-5 looks much more striking in a light color, not sure why. Perhaps the disguised A-pillerand resulting wrap-around look is more dramatic. Something to keep in mind in marketing images.

31 Ferms_93_2.8T March 6, 2010 at 4:36 pm

I’m so stoked I get to see this tomorrow. I have been excited since I first read that Saab would be at the Dallas show. Now a new 9-5 in person!!! Tomorrow will be a very good day indeed!!!

32 Ck1x March 6, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I just came from the Cleveland Autoshow. The only reason I went, because it was listed here that the Ng 9-5 would be there. But lo and behold it was M.I.A. They did have some variations of 9-3′s on display though, the Saab area was miniscule at best. Toyota’s area was scarce! They couldn’t pay people to come to their booth. Mostly everyone was at Audi, Hyundai and Buick(looking at the new Lacrosse) can I state here. Wow, what a very nice car for the price. After sitting in quite a few different makes of cars. Saab has some ground to catch up on in the interior area. Some of the most intriguing interiors were in Audi’s, Buick’s and Volvo’s. Volvo’s S80 interior could easily give anything from Audi a run for it’s money. Saab should be using these same materials. I’m sure a collaboration between Volvo and Saab on materials will help both companies save money in the long run and share the overall costs.

Just saw the new 9-5 at the Minneapolis Auto Show today. It is gorgeous! Unfortunately, doors were locked, and they wouldn’t let me in!

34 saabluster March 7, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I just got back from the Dallas auto show. Saw the 9-5. They had it locked but opened it up since I was a fan. Their display really stood out at that venue. Good looking car and the quality of the interior is impressive. They had a real good central spot in the arena. Tis a good start at telling people SAAB is back.

GML: I have seen several comments from people who say that it might be a problem shifting into Neutral.
A quick googling session turns up this discussion thread: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/feb/23/congress-toyota-misled-buyers/comments/
One commenter says that one driver attempted to shift into Neutral, but “it did not help”. Another commenter writes that shifting, while the drivetrain is experiencing a heavy load (full throttle would tend to qualify as heavy load), is not straight forward.
But the real killer seems to be the start/stop button. You have to press and hold it for three seconds before it kills the engine.

When are the dealerships in Calgary reopening? Any one!

37 hansjoerg March 14, 2010 at 7:19 am

I wonder which colour this 9-5 comes in??
