No. I didn’t crash. But I think I might be ‘crashing’ thanks to a flu passed on by the young bloke.

It’s been a great weekend, though, despite the crashing. Beautiful weather, a great lunch with some friends yesterday and half-decent car show today.
The Shannons Insurance car show is an annual event here in Hobart. Unfortunately, it tends to draw a huge Holden-Ford attendance and little else. It was around 70% domestic this year, with around 15%-20% being imported muscle cars from the US or old vintage stuff that was pre-1950.
That leaves around 10% of the show as being ‘interesting’ for me, with a few Minis, three Ferraris, some Porsches and Jags to keep me looking. I might have to call Shannons and suggest a Euro show in addition to this big one as I know there’s heaps of Euro owners out there that don’t bother with this show.
The most interesting car there today, for me, was this customised V8 Volvo, which really was in incredible condition. Please pardon the crappy cameraphone pics.

Speaking of crashing, though, check out this Pug after some ice fell on it, from a rooftop in Gothenburg.

The other thing that’s kept me of SU this weekend is Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (published as Män som hatar kvinnor in Sweden).
If you’ve not come across it, look for it in large quantities at almost any airport bookshop anywhere in the world. A few weeks ago I did 10 flights in 7 days and saw it just about everywhere. So I bought it.
It’s the first in a three-book series by a now deceased Swedish author and today, I rushed out and bought the second book. The first was that good.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend…..

Get some rest wise leader
Great car show, glad you had fun. I love the old boxy volvos. Wish they’d try one model without so many curves and embrace their boxy past, but in a really innovative way.
Enjoy the books, they Are all great. And then Get all three films. Lisbeth Salander caracter in the films is amazing.
If Steve gets caught in Stieg larssons trilogy we won’t see much blogging over here for at least a whole week!
Odd. I too am down with a cold this weekend.
albert: A week might be a tad optimistic in case Steve decides to read the books in the original lingo. I am unsure about how much Swedish he has picked up on his travels abroad.
There was a similar case with falling snow here in Finland some weeks ago, involving a 9-5: http://www.vartti.fi/artikkeli/a7289a35-df4b-4b6b-b91c-bf9cad310c3b#content
Oh dear, that looked bad.
Isn’t the 9-5 supposed to have a strong roof? There are stories about people driving bulldozers over the old 96. Do we have less protection in newer Saabs..?
Man, I hate the front Grille on Peugeots….. But that Volvo looks gangsta cool
a v8 volvo… sweet!!!
i had a customer from australia. he telling me all about holden product and driving back in the day down under.
“Isn’t the 9-5 supposed to have a strong roof?”
Car roofs are designed to protect from roll overs, sides need to be strong, middle not so much.
And if there’s a sun roof then it of course weakens the structure.
When tons of snow fall from say six-story building, accelerating at 9.81 m/s, its going to be a hard hit.
Butbutbut… It’s got the steering wheel on the right… I mean on the wrong side!!
The Dragon Tattoo movie starts here on March 25. I’ll probably see it March 26 (football season starts on the 25th and Carlton are playing
I’m with you, Swade, I LOVE the Stieg Larsson books. The first two were so good I would find myself sneaking in a few pages before work in the morning. #3 isn’t out here in the States yet, I’m chomping at the bit to get a copy, and hoping the movies are available here soon.
I got into these before my trip to Stockholm last fall. Whenever I travel to a new place, I like to read some good fiction that’s set there – it’s a fun way to learn a little about the culture.
Hope your flu goes away quickly!
Cool Volvo.
I’ve heard of Volvo V8 conversions before, and it always sounded like fun.
While I have never been a fan of big honking V8′s (i prefer my power from smart little engines, with boost :p ) there is something strangely appealing about a Volvo with a engine transplant like this.
The term “Sleeper” comes to mind.
I wonder what engine they used, how much power it’s making, and how fast it is.
It reminds me of this Volvo I read about a while back:
http://web.mac.com/dugstrickler/theantiteam.com/Volvette/Volvette.html
It’s a 1989 Volvo 740 wagon with a 5.7L twin turbo charged V8 engine. It’s pretty funny to see it go.
This video shows it in action:

I wonder what his tire budget is like…
ABBA..Speaking of Swedish authours and related genre..
On Monday, March 15, 2010, ABBA is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Only a handful of acts have attained the lofty heights and worldwide acclaim as this Swedish supergroup.Congratulations to them. Very talented and unique sound.
Around here, there was tonnes of conversions in the 80s to early 90s of old 1970′s Volvos (by tonnes, I mean as much as any other swap). The most common was the Ford 302 small block V8 & tranny. The swap apparently slipped right in. Just special mounts, shift links, and drive shaft. Mustang performace for Volvo insurance rates (sort of).
holycrap!
