Spyker eyes China, Gumball eyes Spyker

April 26, 2010 in Saabology

Victor Muller doesn’t slow down, does he?
In Geneva, whilst promoting Saab, he also decided on new wristwatch designs for Spyker and now in China, whilst showing both Saab and Spyker to the world’s biggest car market, he’s signed a deal for Spyker distribution in China.

Supercar producer Spyker has inked a deal with China Automobile Trading Co (CATC) to set up a joint venture in the country to distribute its models according to reports in Beijing.
The deal – apparently sealed at the Beijing Auto Show – by Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller – would see the JV responsible for sales and after-sales service.
Both parties are however, still waiting on government approval for the JV deal.

I don’t think they’re going to have any trouble at all in selling their quota of vehicles this year and with their production now concentrated where their bodies are made in England, the result for Spyker could be much better than what we’ve seen in the past.
——
I don’t know a lot about the Gumball 3000. From the little I do know, it looks like a bunch of wealthy types paying a bucketloand of money to drive exclusive cars – sometimes outside the boundaries of the law – and go to exclusive parties with other wealthy types.
It’d be my kind of gig if I only had the money and the car.
Anyway, the founder of the modern day Gumball 3000 is a guy named Maximillion Cooper (sounds like a rich guy, doesn’t he?) and apparently there’s a good amount of interest each year in the car he chooses to drive in his own event.
This year, it’s a Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85.
spyker-c8-laviolette-lm85-front-quarter-main.jpg
It seems like a suitably outrageous car for such an event.
A look through the photos at that link shows you some of the great detail on the car, too.
Thanks to Martin K for the link!

SaabWay Club set out to support Mille Miglia

April 26, 2010 in Saabology

The Italian Saab Car Club is called SaabWay and I’ve received an email from them telling of their plans to get out and support Jan-Ake Jonsson and Victor Muller as they pilot a couple of old Saabs around in the historic Mille Miglia race in a few weeks time.
Members from SaabWay are hoping to get some groups of people along the route from Brescia to Rome – and back – to show their support for the tow Saab executives and their sons as they get around the course in a couple of 1957 model Saab 93s.
Maybe there’s some Saab enthusiasts from Italy reading this who would like to join them? If so, get in touch with me and I’ll pass your email on to Luca from Saabway.
The SaabWay club is also hoping to present Victor Muller and Jan Ake Jonsson with a commemorative plate in gratitude for everything that’s happened in the last 6 months.

Monday morning snippets

April 26, 2010 in Saabology

The rest of Australia has a day off today whilst the engine room of the nation’s economy – Tasmania (OK, I’m joking) – is still hard at work. Grrrrrr.

There are some more great photos of the Springtime in Sweden gathering held over the weekend, here on Flickr.

There’s some fascinating reading over at Business Week about the car manufacturing capacity being built up in China at the moment. It seems everyone is building new plants over there.
Of course, over-capacity in the market place was one of the reasons people gave as to why Saab should be left to die. It seems the auto executives agree with me though: why should my company be the one to go in the event of over-capacity. The one to go should be the one building cars that can’t find a market.
As long as Saab build cars that can find a market, they’ll be OK.

William L went along to the Gothenburg Auto Show on the weekend and was a little disappointed by the size of the Saab stand there. They had a Saab 9-3x, a 9-3 convertible in TX trim as well as the new Saab 9-5 V6 there.

I can see what he means. Gothenburg probably isn’t a major show on their calendar, but when you consider that one of Saab’s main tasks is to win back past customers at the moment…..

Big congratulations to a mate of mine in Sydney, known here at SU as Hawkeye, on the birth of the his son Curtis earlier this month. Here he is safe and sound in Mum’s 9-3.
I’ve heard from the President of the Saab Car Club of Australia that Curtis has been granted free membership of the club – until he reaches driving age :-)

Springtime in Sweden 2010

April 25, 2010 in Saabology

“Springtime in Sweden” is a Saab gathering held every year in New Hampshire to honor the memory of Kyle and Tim Crisman, a couple of Saab-loving brothers who passed away tragically in 2002.
The 2010 event was held yesterday, April 24, and one of our regular visitors, Brett M, was kind enough to shoot a bunch of photos and send along the link to his Flickr record of the day.
The Crisman memorial established two scholarships – one for each brother – which are awarded to a young student each year. You can make a donation towards those scholarships by visiting the Crisman Memorial website.
My thanks to Brett for the the photos and if you attended Springtime in Sweden this year, then I hope you had a great day.

Saab Enthusiasts to Flock to 2010 Saab Festival

April 25, 2010 in News

The following is a press release from Saab in Sweden.

——

  • Saab Festival to be held on 15-18 July in Trollhättan, the home of Saab
  • Focus on newly-launched 9-5 sedan and 50th anniversary of Saab 96

Trollhättan, Sweden. Thousands of Saab enthusiasts from all over the world are expected to attend the 2010 Saab Festival in Sweden between 15 – 18 July, the first to be held since Saab became an independent company earlier this year.

The biennial festival is traditionally the world’s largest gathering of Saab fans. Based around the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan, the home of Saab, this year’s event will focus on Saabs past and present, including the newly-launched Saab 9-5 sedan.

In addition to factory tours, parades, presentations and automobilia sales, the festival will include a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Saab 96, the car that took Erik ‘Mr Saab’ Carlsson to the first of a hat-trick of RAC Rally victories in 1960.

“This year’s event has special significance as it comes at the start of a new era in our company’s history,” said Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson. “Many Saab fans around the world demonstrated great support for Saab during the sale negotiations and we are delighted to take this opportunity of showing our appreciation.”

Press Release: Historic Recreation: Saab and Spyker CEOs to Drive Classic Saabs on Mille Miglia

April 25, 2010 in News

  • Saab and Spyker CEOs to run Saab 93s in 2010 Mille Miglia
  • Celebration of class win in 1957

Trollhättan, Sweden.

Italian hillsides are about to reverberate again to the distinctive crackle of a Saab two-stroke engine. Providing the soundtrack will be Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson and Saab Automobile Chairman and Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller, who will each drive a 1957-vintage Saab 93 at this year’s historic Mille Miglia road race.

MilleMigliaSaabs.jpg The two executives are celebrating the 93′s class win on this unique event 53 years ago with cars prepared by the Saab Car Museum in Sweden. Jonsson and Muller will be following, at a more leisurely pace, in the wheel tracks of the 1957 class winner crewed by Charlie Lohmander and co-driver Harald Kronegård. Today’s annual classic recreation of the 1,000-mile (1,600 km) Brescia-Rome-Brescia route is held over three days on open roads and decided on punctuality between check-points. Jonsson and Muller will be co-driven by their sons, Christian, 38, and Olivier,18, respectively.

Powered by a 45 hp, 748 cc, three-cylinder engine, but weighing only 810 kilos, the Saab 93′s agile handling and good aerodynamics enabled it to embarrass far more powerful, larger cars. “Saab’s early success on this event is part of our rich heritage,” said Jan Åke Jonsson. “We’re looking forward to competing once again with the Saab 93, although we won’t be driving it quite so fast.”

This year’s event, from 6 – 8 May, is Victor Muller’s tenth Mille Miglia. “The 93 is unlike any other car I’ve entered, which is hardly surprising as it’s a Saab,” he said. “Jan Åke and I will enjoy the event and we’re looking forward to a little friendly rivalry between team-mates. It certainly won’t be as intense as the competition between Eklund and Blomqvist when they were rallying with Saabs in the late 70s.”

Saab’s 1957 Mille Miglia success was followed by Erik ‘Mr Saab’ Carlsson’s overall victory on the Finnish 1000 Lakes Rally later the same year, both results bringing early international recognition for the Saab brand. Carlsson would go on to achieve back-to-back Monte Carlo wins and a hat-trick of RAC Rally victories in the early 60s.

Between 1955 and 1960, 52,731 Saab 93s were built at Trollhättan, where Saabs are still produced today. Its frontal styling introduced a new face for Saab, carried forward by the 96 sedan and 95 station wagon which stayed in production until 1980.

Teknikens Varld drive final Saab 9-5, check out BAIC C71 and C60 in Beijing

April 25, 2010 in News

Teknikens Valrd have been quite busy reporting on Saab related stuff this week.
First of all, they took the final Saab 9-5 to roll off the production line for a spin, ending up at the Saab museum in Trollhattan. I don’t understand Swedish, but it looks like they might have been met there by Peter Backstrom along with what I’m guessing is the first 9-5 to roll off the production line way back in the 1990s.
TVlastSaab9-5.jpg
Apparently they talk about this final 9-5 drive in very nice terms.
Click here to watch the video (best if you speak Swedish).
——
Second, they’ve been in Beijing for the Auto Show and paid some special attention to the vehicles shown by Beijing Automotive that are based on old Saab models acquired by the company.
There are two C71 models on show, one of which is a regular car and the other being a prototype electric vehicle. BAIC are looking to turn Saab’s old 9-5 into an electric car capable of a 90 mile range, with a battery pack that can be swapped out and replaced at outlets set up for the purpose.
Teknikens Varld have a gallery of 20+ photos on their site.
The C60 on show is basically a recent model Saab 9-3 with some different lights front and rear. It’s likely something that was put together very quickly in Trollhattan in the lead up to the Beijing show.
C60front.jpg
C60rear.jpg
It looks like they’ve put quite a bit more time into the customisation of the C71, based on the Saab 9-5. It also looks like the 9-5 wasn’t all they picked up whilst they were in Sweden :-)
C71helloladies.jpg
Whilst the C60 wears a basic Saab interior, the C71 interior seems to have been embellished quite a bit on the show car.
C71Interior.jpg
And it is important to remember that these are just show cars. BAIC won’t start building their Saab-derived vehicles for another 18 months to 2 years as they’re still building the factory at the moment.
We won’t know what the final vehicles will look like for a while yet.
The blue one, which we first saw coming off a truck out the back of the show building, is the C71 Electric Vehicle.
BAIC are pouring heaps of money not only into the Saab tooling acquisition and factory build, but also into electric propulsion.

Thanks to several people for the links to the various Tekniken’s articles today.

Just Saab acquire Spyker C8 Spyder

April 24, 2010 in Saabology

I showed you this photo a few days ago….
Spyker C8
…and I promised to share the story behind it.
This Spyker C8 Spyder has just been acquired by Just Saab, a Saab dealership duo in Ohio, US.
They considered picking one of these up as soon as Spyker were announced as bidding for Saab, but buying a C8 isn’t like heading down to the corner shop for a bottle of milk. It takes a little time.
Anyway, discussions took place at a recent dealer meeting in the US where they got to meet some Spyker representatives, and the end result is the car you see in that photo.
Check out how it was delivered:
just-saab-spyker-2006_01.jpg
I’ve received a few parcels from FedEx in my time, but I’ve never had a whole darn sports car FedEx’d to me. Not that I’d complain, or anything…..
Just Saab are not a Spyker dealer, but just like the guys at Tynans Saab in Colorado, they’re already getting some fantastic comments and discussions happening from having this baby next to the Saab stock in their showroom. And that was the reason for the purchase – to show their support for the acquisition of Saab and to show off what the new entity is making.
Congratulations on the purchase, and thanks to AJ for sending in the images. Click to enlarge.

Saab Festival 2010 – booked!

April 24, 2010 in Saabology

UPDATE below

——

Accommodation has been booked in Trollhattan for the 2010 Saab Festival, which will tie in very nicely with the Midnight Sun Rally so I’ll get to see Jörgen and Bo, as well as Vladimir Antonov and co-driver whipping around the forests.

The Festival has now been confirmed by Saab Museum director, Peter Backstrom, via his twitter account so it’s all systems go.

SaabFest1.jpg

If you are in any way able, I urge you to do what you can to get to Trollhattan for this festival. I received a lot of help from readers here at SU to go to the 60th Anniversary festival back in 2007 and it really was the bet Saab event I’ve ever attended – by a long way.

This year promises to be a great event as well. There’s no word yet as to what might be on the official program, but the prospect of gathering in Trollhattan and celebrating Saab’s new ownership and independence should be reason enough to get along and enjoy the weekend.

Throw in the Midnight Sun rally, the locks, every Saab you can imagine, the Wednesday night car show, Kinnekulle, the never-really-setting sun and everything else and you’ve got a recipe for lots of great Saab memories.

UPDATE

Djup Strupe is rarely idle. This source is unconfirmed, but reads well.

This summer, the Saab-enthusiasts will gather again.

Thousands of Saab-enthusiasts from all over the world are expected during the Saab festival in Trollhättan 15-18th July. It’s the first festival since Saab became an independent company earlier this year. The festival, which usually is arranged every second year, is the world’s largest gathering for Saab fans and is held near the Saab Car Museum. This year, extra attention will be on the 50 year celebration of the Saab 96.

-The event this year is truly special, since it occurs at a time when our company enters a new era, says JAJ.

-Saab-fans all over the world were a great support for Saab during the sale process, and we are happy to have this opportunity to show our appreciation.

Mystery Car leaves Saab facility

April 24, 2010 in Saabology

I’ll preface this by saying I don’t think this is a Saab vehicle. It’s quite small and Saab have consistently said have a small car in their plans – not in development. Saab need new investors before they can think about building a new smaller car.
If I were to guess I’d say it’s one they have been doing some development work on for GM, possibly for some time. Maybe one of their smaller new vehicles.
It was photographed yesterday near Saab’s facility in Trollhattan.
Guesses, anyone?

Vladimir Antonov to drive SUHRT #2 car at Midnight Sun Rally

April 24, 2010 in Rally Team

I was going to wait a little longer to confirm, but it seems to be out there on the internets now……
The Saabs United Historic Rally Team is pleased to announce that Vladimir Antonov has accepted an invitation to drive our #2 car for the 2010 Midnight Sun Rally in Sweden!
vladimir_antonov_spyker.jpgAntonov is the former part-owner and board member of Spyker Cars NV who, in controversial circumstances, rescinded his ownership stake in order to facilitate the sale of Saab from General Motors to Spyker Cars.
Antonov is also the Chairman of the Snoras Bank supervisory board and the largest shareholder in Snoras Bank, who are big sponsors of the Spyker Squadron motorsport team.
Antonov is, of course, a very curious figure in the emerging Saab landscape with an obvious passion for the company. It’s going to be great to see him flying around the forests of Sweden in our white Saab 99 Turbo, based on Per Eklund’s early Saab Turbo rally cars.
That car is still under construction in Stockholm, but should be ready very soon.

Rumour: Saab Festival – July 15-18

April 24, 2010 in News

A poster at Svenska Saabklubben has posted the following on their club forum. It’s short and to the point:

According to reliable source……Saab Festival in Trollhättan, Sweden July 15 to 18!

Those dates coincide with the Midnight Sun rally, which will be running around Trollhattan on the 15th, so the dates make good sense.

The holding of a Festival this year will be a fantastic coup for Saab, who missed out on a Festival last year (the festival is normally held every two years) and will give all those Saab fans who participated in the Saab Support Convoys a chance to come to Saab’s home and celebrate the company’s new found independence.

Of course, we must wait on confirmation of this from Saab themselves, but those Svenska Saabklubben guys have some pretty good contacts.

Friday Night Snippets – mystery man edition

April 23, 2010 in Saabology

Hi all.
Tonight I’ve been catching up with a mate of mine, Bill P, his wife Jane and some friends (Mark and Kate) as they travel around Tassie on holiday.
I first met Bill and Jane when I was driving my 1985 Saab 900 Aero back from Sydney. We met up at Gundagai for some lunch and a good chat back then, and we had a great time tonight catching up and talking over the Saab Spyker deal (amongst many other things).
Hence the lack of entries this evening. You can blame Bill :-)
——
The Saab Sweden website now has a neat page where you can try the new Saab 9-5 in various colors, with various wheels.
I’ll take mine in white with the Edge wheels, please.

Thanks to Tobias, via Google Buzz.
——
Saabs are now being produced at a rate of 1,000 vehicles per week.
Hopefully they’ll all get out to dealers very soon.

I’m just waiting for confirmation to make sure that I can spill the beans, but what I can tell you is that it sounds like J

Brit wins Sales Manager of the Year – and quote award as well!

April 23, 2010 in Saabology

Congratulations to Graham Maton, Sales Manager at Southampton Saab in England, on his recent achievement, being named National Saab Sales Manager of the Year.

I’m really honoured to have won Sales Manager of the Year. I’ve been at Southampton Saab for over 25 years and I couldn’t be happier working here and with a fantastic team of dedicated professionals. Credit has to go to the team for their continued hard work and effort and winning this award is certainly a reflection on their success so I’d like to thank them for all their support.

Sounds like a good place to work and a good bunch of people and I wish them every continued success and a bright future.
Maton also picks up the Saabs United Understatement Of The Month award for this:

Here at the dealership we’re looking forward to a great year ahead and my team and I are hoping that we can make 2010 even more successful than 2009.

Given that the brand was dead for at least two-thirds of 2009, I’d suggest the only way 2010 could be less successful than 2009 is if one defied the laws of nature and turned into a toilet brush.
Congratulations, still, to Mr Maton and here’s to 2010 being a total butt-kicker of a year compared to the year all the pundits in the press thought you might (never) have.
