Spyker in the news following shareholder meeting

April 23, 2010 in News

Last night, I covered some initial reports from the Spyker Shareholder meeting held yesterday in Zeewolde. There were more reports that came through both in comments and in other news sources that I’d like to bring to the front page here.
Here are some of the issues……
——
Spyker must become profitable
Spyker Cars itself has to be profitable when Saab has become profitable, if not… they might sell Spyker. “I am not keen “to sell my own baby, but Spyker soon have to become profitable,” added Muller. The CEO says that if Saab is profitable, Spyker should be if it would not qualify herself for sale. Muller has always said that Saab will be profitable again in 2012.

Corporate name change to Saab Spyker
Spyker Cars NV still wants to add Saab to their company-name, but there are still some legal issues to solve with regard to this.

Breakeven
Saab’s break-even is currently 105,000 vehicles. Management hopes to lower that number to 85,000 vehicles.
The company expects to produce over 50,000 vehicles this year, growing towards 100,000 vehicles next year and profitability, as per the business plan, in 2012.

Stock listing
Victor Muller still has plans to list the company’s stock somewhere other than in Amsterdam, where it’s currently listed. Investigations are still underway, he said, but a listing in London is a tedious operation.

Spyker production to double
Spyker expect to produce 75 vehicles this year, compared with just 31 in 2009. Dagens Industri, in their usual way, called this statement ‘dazzling’.
2009 saw Spyker move production from Holland to England as well as the Saab purchase. 2010 will see a more co-ordinated production facility and wider distribution (eventually) so making 75 cars really isn’t that much of a stretch.
What Spyker need to do is find customers for them all, which should be a lot easier with the publicity they’ve had this year and a wider distribution network.

A smaller Saab car
“The Saab 9-2 is clearly on the forefront of our priorities,” Muller said during a news briefing after the shareholders’ meeting, adding the market data in support of producing such a car was “irresistible”.
However, Muller made clear that to add such a car to its line-up, Saab would need substantial new capital and also a partner with whom to design and produce the car. He said the model would also have to stand out sharply from the other cars in the segment.

Just a few more thoughts on BAIC and their Saab derived show cars

April 23, 2010 in Editorial

Beijing Automotive are showing their Saab-based vehicles at the Beijing Auto Show starting this Friday.
With that in mind, I’d like to know what you guys think of the Hautai B11? And I’m very keen to know your thoughts on the Dadi Unisonous.
What?
Haven’t heard of them?
If that’s the case, then you find yourself in the same position as 99% of the non-Chinese population with regard to Beijing Automotive and their use of Saab vehicles as a base for their new products.
I’m seeing a reasonable amount of hand wringing in comments with people proclaiming that they feel devalued by BAIC’s efforts, etc. I’m trying hard to sympathise with you, but at the end of the day, I’m struggling.
The fact of the matter is that none of your neighbors are ever likely to know that the 9-5 or 9-3 in your driveway is going to form the base of what will likely be a very good car that’ll be sold in China.
You only know about it because you go looking for Saab news on the internet. Heck, the average punter out there in non-Saab land doesn’t even know that Saab is still alive and a large proportion of them never GM were Saab’s owners to start with. How are they going to know something like this?
“But I’ll know about it” I can hear you saying.
Well, yes.
But in regard to that, I’d encourage you to build a bridge and get over it. Your car is still every bit as good as it was yesterday, last week or last year. Whatever BAIC build will be built for the Chinese market only in the near-medium term. It’ll be a very long time and a few trade-ins before there’s any chance of a BAIC-sourced vehicle having any influence whatsoever on your vehicle’s value.
This deal is worth a bucketload of money to Saab in both cash and ongoing consultancies. It’s a great deal; one that makes quite a bit out of nothing. It’s quite possibly one of the main reasons Saab was still in a position to be sold earlier this year.
These vehicles we’ve seen are show cars that were made in a hurry. They will change before they’re made for real and that won’t be for some time, anyway. In fact, BAIC are still building the factory that’ll make these cars and it won’t come online until 2011. The new 9-5 will be well and truly bedded in by then and a new 9-3 will be very close.
So please….. chill.
Your street isn’t going to fill up with Chinese imitations of your car. Your car is still as great as it’s always been. And the deal is helping Saab to stick around and bring us all-new cars.

Spyker General Shareholder Meeting held in Zeewolde

April 23, 2010 in News

Spyker have held a General Shareholder Meeting in Holland and according to the Telegraaf newspaper, all seems to have gone well.

You can get a copy of the meeting agenda and notes from the Spyker Cars website (pdf).

A Googletrans from Telegraaf:

——

ZEEWOLDE (AFN) – The production of the Swedish car maker Saab is going according to plan. Factory orders have risen since the takeover by the Dutch Spyker Cars in February. That said CEO Jan-Ake Jonsson, Saab’s general meeting on Thursday Spyker.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller said he intends to decide the summer on whether to maintain the listing on the Amsterdam stock exchange. He would like listings in Stockholm and London, where the share is expected to be more then traded in Amsterdam.

Saab aims for this year on sales of 50,000 cars. Production should amount to 53,800 pieces, said Jonsson. The objective of, inter alia the introduction of new models. The Saab 9-5 can now be ordered, but only in late May formally marketed.

2011

Early 2011, the 9-4X track and in 2012, the 9-3. Saab also looking at developing a new compact car, the 9-1.

Saab wants its main plant in Trollhättan Sweden back to the production and sale of pre-crisis level of about 100,000 to 125,000 units per year, including the 9-4X will be built in Mexico.

Muller said that Spyker still think about the production of an SUV, but that no decisions have been made. “We therefore have no fixed commitments with third parties”said Muller.

——

All sounds OK to me.

It’s my understanding that a press release should be forthcoming from this soon as well. I’ll probably be asleep by then, so please keep one another informed. I believe there may be a statement in that release pertaining to and clarifying the Saab GB episode that sent the Swedish press into a fit earlier this week.

I made enquiries about it and heard that that may be the case, but I don’t want to pre-empt the statement by releasing what I understand will be said about the issue. I will say, however, that it’s pretty much how I summed it up earlier this week – it’s a different entity and Saab Automobile’s operations are not affected by the pooling of the rest of Spyker Cars NV’s resources.

Thanks to Jos for the Telegraaf link.

More on Beijing Automotive’s Saab-based show cars

April 22, 2010 in News

UPDATE – new image below
——
There’s been a fair bit of interest – and some mixed feeling – about the Saab-based cars that Beijing Automotive (BAIC) will be showing at the Beijing Auto Show, starting this Friday.
Here are the two cars once again….
BAIC-C71front.jpg
BAIC-C60front.jpg
I’ve had a few emails come in from people in the region.
I’m pleased to let you all know that a local named Simo will be heading off the Beijing Auto Show and will send along some photos of the cars displayed on the stands. It’ll be great to hear his thoughts and get the images online.
Also, Kenny T has written in with a few bits and pieces about them as well.
Firstly, the word going around several Chinese forums (forii?) is that these vehicles have been built in Trollhattan as show specials. I know a few of you have speculated about this in comments and it seems you might be right.
It makes sense, too, that these would be purpose built show cars. All other manufacturers do it, and BAIC most likely don’t have the machinery they’ve acquired set up and ready to produce vehicles yet.
Secondly, Kenny has sent along a picture of the interior of the C60, which looks like it’s directly out of a 2007+ Saab 9-3. I don’t have a reference for the site where the image originates but you can see the different badge on the steering wheel.
BAIC-C60interior.jpg
Again, this would tend to confirm to me that it’s a Trolhattan built car. I’m sure the Chinese would modify the interior to some extent.
it does raise some questions as to which version of the 9-3 they might have bought, though. All indications that have come to me from Saab were that they bought pre-2006 Saab 9-3 ‘tooling’. Exactly what they mean by ‘tooling’ I’m not sure, but I’ve always assumed it’s the specialised machinery involved and the right to use any intellectual property in terms of design and engineering, etc.
The appearance of a 2007+ interior does muddy the waters a little on that count, but I don’t think it necessarily changes things.
If these are what they seem – show cars built in Trollhattan, essentially concept cars – then it would make perfect sense that an existing interior would be installed given the time constraints involved in putting these cars together.
——
Regardless, it’s very interesting to see what BAIC have done with Saab’s work and I look forward to watching these evolve and make their way to market in the future.

Biogas Saab prepared for Swedish Touring Car Championship

April 22, 2010 in News

Bilsport and AMS are both reporting on a Saab 9-3 being prepared for the next Swedish Touring Car Championship.
Perf01.jpg
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this car, however. It’s actually been in development for a few years and was shown at the Saab Museum back in February 2009 with an intent to run in the 2009 STCC series. My guess is that Saab’s uncertain fate in 2009 caused them to hit the brakes on that effort.
Initially running as a Saab BioPower vehicle, the car has now been re-engineered to run on Biogas.
From Auto Motor and Sport (Googletrans):

Now the gas as a propellant entrance Touring Car racing. Saab set up a biogas-powered 9-3 in Gothenburg City Race in June, and tomorrow (Thursday), the racing car is on display at the Gothenburg Motorshow.
“This is a Swedish product of Swedish subcontractors in both software and hardware. The engine was developed in cooperation with Saab Powertrain and BRC Sweden. Saab’s original parts have been used as far as possible”, says Mr Jan Warnestad, coordinator of the Dealer Sports team, based in Karlstad where they developed the concept.
Saab 9-3 Concept Biogas has a two-liter turbo engine which is designed according to the 2000 Super Touring Car and the biogas regulations. It was shown two years ago at Mantorp Park, but then with an ethanol engine. Gas-fueled cars has grown by Dealer Sports to now be ready to run the STCC.
The car is ready to run STCC this year. Dealer Sports, Saab Performance and FordonsGas have a common goal to get it to start already in STCC’s City Race in Gothenburg 4-5 June.

It seems they’re still searching for more funding and support, so anyone in a position to assist should get in touch with them via their website at saabperformance.se (in both Swedish and English). After a few setbacks, it’d be great to see them get this car up and ready for the championship this time.
As mentioned in the article linked, above, the car will be on display at the Gothenburg Auto Show from tomorrow.
There is also video of a testing lap. Looks quick!

New Saab-based models from Beijing – in the metal

April 22, 2010 in News

A few days ago we saw a CGI of what Beijing Automotive were planning with the Saab 9-5 tooling they bought from Saab.
That was a prelude to the Beijing Auto Show but I wasn’t sure if they’d be ready to show something for real. You gotta hand it to the Chinese, though. They’re nothing if not industrious. This is pretty quick work for a company that only just acquired the technology.
And so it is that a website called Sohu.com has snapped up some images of the vehicles – so fresh they’re still wrapped in plastic – being unloaded off a truck, presumably for the Beijing show.

Wednesday night snippets – Oh Canada edition

April 22, 2010 in News

In case you Canadians missed it in comments, there was a story there pertaining to Saab’s future in Canada.
I’ve had the commenter email me as well.

‘Late Breaking’: VM in Toronto week of May 10 for the launch of ‘Saab Canada’!
Budd’s Saab (local dealership; oldest in the country) will be the distribution anchor.
How do I know this? Well, my colleague just purchased one of the last new/demo ’09 9-3s there and it was mentioned casually. Actually, I’m surpised that they’re being so coy about it. Must be waiting for confirmation of actual day…or the Volcanic Plume to clear :) .
Saab 9-5 will be there. With drives for the Press only at this time…

No official word yet, but this is quite promising.
——
Speaking of the volcanic plume, there was some concern about Saab having to close production due to the volcanic cloud as delivery of some parts wouldn’t be possible.
Saab, like most (all?) car manufacturers, runs on a just-in-time management regime where they don’t keep large stocks of parts for assembly. They have them delivered, as the name suggests, just in time for use at the plant.
TTELA are reporting that it looks like Saab will be OK.

Earlier this week were assessed as high risk that material shortages would put an end to Saab’s production at the end of the week. The risk is still there, but with some air could move past few days the situation has improved.
- We know that we will be able to run production tomorrow. [Whether we can run] all day remains to be seen,’ said Mrs Hogstrom on Saab’s communications department.

Apparently the parts they might be waiting for have to come in from Turkey.
——
Ny Teknik have had a tour around Saab’s manufacturing facility, a new treat considering the way it’s operating with multiple models on the same line.

- I dare not claim that we alone in the world with our solution. But it is extremely unusual,” says Saab’s production director Gunnar Brunius, when he takes the Ny Teknik on a tour of the body shop. He expects that Saab saved almost 50 million on building a [single] process instead of two [lines].

Thanks to Fredrik G for the link.

I’ll tell you more about this one in the next day or so….. click to enlarge.

BEWARE!!!!! Spyker cars taking over Saab Museum!!!!!

April 21, 2010 in Saabology

First it’s the C8 Double-12 that raced at Le Mans back in 2003.
Now, there’s a black C8 parked out front. It rocked up just an hour or so ago.
I’m sure there’ll be someone from Sweden’s TT news agency there soon, reporting on the takeover of the museum by Spykers (which are probably just running interference for cash raiders emptying Peter and Ola’s coffee money).
OK, I jest. Poorly.
Click to enlarge. And many thanks to Trollhattan local, Stefan L, for the images.

Saab 9-3x owner’s report

April 21, 2010 in Saabology

One of our regulars here, Till72, has had his Saab 9-3x for a few months now and sent in this report.
It’s my favourite Saab in the current range. I had one for a few days back in September last year and just loved it, so I was really pleased to get this report in.

——
As stingray74 requested back in February here’s a first summary of my experience with the 9-3x after a bit more of two months and 3200 kms of driving it. I have to admit that I’m quite biased as it is a very special car for me. Not only because it’s got that birthday card under the hood but also because I called my dealer and confirmed the deal on that car exactly one minute after the news of the wind down of Saab popped up on SU.
9-3x 2_1.jpg
In fact I was looking for a convertible but after Swade’s review of the 9-3x last year I got interersted. And as my dealer got this one in stock I just fell in love with the car. I didn’t even test drive it.
On the car itself: it’s a 1,9 TTiD auto, jetblack with black sports leather and most gadgets except Xenon. Things I added from Hirsch are (of course) 20 extra hp, 18″ wheels for summer, 17″ brakes, carbon leather interior and aluminium door sill trim. I still wonder why I didn’t get the exhaust, too. Sometimes you got to stop shopping at a certain point I think. Another thing I got was a park heater.
The engine is amazing. From Hirsch you get 400 Nm and 200 hp if you got auto and so far that’s been enough for me. You know I’m the diesel guy around here and this engine just made me stop asking for a bigger diesel in the Saab lineup. Quick acceleration is possible in every situation. I do quite a bit of driving with a trailor in the back and even with the max load in the back you have enough power all the time. Yesterday I drove on a empty autobahn and on a slightly downhill part I managed to go 240 km/h (normally top speed is somewhere between 220 and 230). Right at that moment a Porsche passed me and made me feel slow. ;-)
9-3x 8_1.jpg
Can’t say too much about fuel economy right now because I did half of the kilometers with my trailor in the back and the rest in the city. Right now I’m at about 8,5 l/100 km which is not best but not too bad either.
Though the car handles great even at those speeds it can be experienced best when driving small, curvy roads. Handling has of course improved again when putting on the 18″ wheels but even with the 17″ winter rims you’re always in control. I switched from the Impreza to the 9-3x in the middle of winter and I have to admit that I didn’t miss the AWD too much. One very snowy day I had a ton of firewood loaded in my trailor and was surprised how easy it was to handle driving on the snowy and icy roads.
But sure the car with this engine would have deserved XWD. Would be the icing on top.
To me this is the most saaby Saab since my 2001 9-3 hatch. It’s an extremely practical car with lots of turbo power. And extremely relaxing to drive. If I need to replace our 9-5 SC in two years it will be a 9-5x I think.
And: this car is a good answer to the question asked before “Why should I buy a Saab in 2010″. Get people to test drive Saabs. A good number will buy one.
Cheers
Till

Wednesday Snippets – Volcano vs Saab

April 21, 2010 in Saabology

There’s a good story in the Mirror today, about a Dad-to-be who was stuck in Stockholm while his very pregnant wife was back in England looking after their two kids and ready to drop the third.
That little volcano called Eyjafjallajokull that’s been causing havoc all around Europe this week (and elsewhere, to be honest) gave him some grave fears that he might not get home in time for the birth.
His solution involved Ebay and a long drive in a Saab 9000. A great story.
Tidy looking car, too.
A local dealer should find this guy and hook him up with an Emma Rattle and baby blanket.
——
Scottish Saab dealers let people know that the company is still around:

Luxury car manufacturer Saab took to the slopes this weekend as the official sponsor of the UK’s first ever national level Skier and Boarder Cross event.
The Saab Challenge, which was sponsored by dealerships across Scotland, saw hundreds of budding skiers and snowboarders travel to Cairngorm Mountain to take part in the event. After becoming one of the highest profile sports of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Saab was chosen to sponsor the event because of its strong shared heritage with Snowsport Scotland and Aberdeen Snowsports Club, the organisers of the weekend.

Of course, Saab has had a partnership with Salomon for some time now and is pretty well represented in this field. It’s good to see these guys starting to build on it.
——
And speaking of winter stuff….
I know the snow is melting away in Trollhattan now, but I just received a nice set of photos that look like they might have been takn back in February. The place looked very much like this when I was there back then.

RIP Guru.
——
The SU Forum has been switched off, primarily due to the fact that I just don’t have time to monitor it and I don’t know enough about spam-proofing it.
I really liked the setup and I think it’s a good launch base, but I just don’t have the time.
If anyone’s got any bright ideas or an inclination to run it, please let me know. Good experience with VBulletin essential.

Listen to Bob Lutz

April 21, 2010 in Troll Stuff

If you’ve got some time to spare, click here and listen to the latest Autoblog podcast, featuring quite a decent session with soon-to-be GM retiree, Bob Lutz.
I hate the guy’s decisions when it came to Saab, but when you listen to him talk about the car business, he does make a lot of sense.
