Saab 9-5 preliminary information – infotainment system

April 17, 2010 in Saabology

I’m not a big fan of the word ‘infotainment’. It conjures up visions of 30-minute late night ‘infomercials’ and things.

Be that as it may, the 9-5 information continues, with this.

Please note, once again, that this preliminary information is for certain European markets and may not be applicable to where you are (though most of it will).

Saab 9-5 preliminary information – Bi-Xenon SmartBeam headlamps

April 16, 2010 in Saabology

The next generation Hella Vario Xenon system will be offered on the new Saab 9-5. This system is the most advanced headlamp system in the industry. The vehicle adapts to the driving situation to enable excellent light performance. Input for changing modes is speed, radius and time.
In addition during MY11, a High Beam Assist is included. This automatically switches from high beam down to low beam when meeting oncoming traffic or approaching a slower vehicle. The driver can maximise driving with high beam on and no need to “fiddle” with the light stalk.
The system provides increased forward lighting at night by an automated high beam control through the use of a digital camera . This camera detects vehicle specific light and ambient light (oncoming and leading traffic). Depending on the light level the system switches high beams on and off. It switches to low beams until:

  • -the preceding or approaching vehicle is out of view
  • -the ambient light level allows high beam usage

In the new 9-5, during MY11 high beam assist is standard with Bi-Xenon Smart beam (but not available with Lane Departure warning)
——
Availability
System is optional for all forms. Requires Auto dimming inside mirror and Rain sensor
——
Light modes

  1. Town light – at 0-50km/h
  2. Country light – at 50-100km/h
  3. Motorway light – at >100km/h
  4. Adverse weather light – Wiper/rainsensor

Town Light
This feature will be automatically activated in situation with ambient light and vehicle speeds situated up to 50 km/h. Town-light is wide and without asymmetry, adjusted to lighted town roads.
Saab9-5TownLight.jpg
The illumination is significantly broadened so that pedestrians and objects situated on every side of the road can be better and earlier recognized. The special beam pattern has been designed to avoid glare affecting other traffic participants.
Benefits

  • Wide spread light pattern specially for urban road / intersections / pedestrians.
  • Short range due to low speeds.
  • No glare of other traffic.

Country Light
Country light is relatively similar to the current low-beam but uses new possibilities to improve the illumination of the road and the side areas when driving overland. In addition to the longer illumination of the driver’s own lane, the oncoming traffic will be de-glared. Country Light is activated between 50 and 100 km/h.
Saab9-5CountryLight.jpg
A special feature is the improved illumination of the area beside the road so that dangers (e.g. deer) will be recognized early.
Benefits

  • Improved visibility on left and right side.
  • Improved visibility range, minimizing glare for oncoming traffic.

Motorway Light
The aim of the motorway light is to bring an illumination adapted to the higher speed driven on motorway. Due to the fact that there is no directly oncoming traffic, the viewing distance on the own side of the motorway has been increased. The visibility range rises from 70m to 140m so that very distant objects can be recognized across the entire width of the road. There is no drawback for road-users that have been passed.
Saab9-5MotorwayLight.jpg
Safety and driving comfort are considerably improved. Motorway Light is activated above 100 km/h with a steady driving pattern.

Adverse Weather Lighting
The adverse weather light is activated at rain and snowfall and is controlled by the wiper, rain sensor or rear foglamp.
Saab9-5WeatherLight.jpg
The wide light distribution -slightly swiveled to the outside -enables improved orientation at the edge of the road. The intensity of the light in the far distance is increased in order to recognize objects and markings on the right road side and obstacles on the lane despite the weather condition. Additionally, dazzling of oncoming traffic is reduced by lowering of reflection on the wet road.
Benefits

  • Increased safety during rain, snow and fog.
  • Reduced glare for oncoming traffic.

Dynamic Bend Lighting
The dynamic bending light is controlled via the steering angle and is activated automatically whilst the vehicle is in motion. During this, the projector of the main headlamp swivels.
DynamicBendLighting.jpg
Depending on the direction of travel, the speed of the swiveling is adjusted automatically to the speed of the vehicle. This happens with the AFL-light modes and the high-beam lighting functions as they are all realized by the same projector which includes a drum responsible for the different light distribution.

Saab 9-5 preliminary details – Forms and colors

April 16, 2010 in News

I’ve received a little bit of internal information about the Saab 9-5, which will be released in a few months as a 2010 model and then later (naturally) as a 2011 model. There will be some changes between the two in the form of additions in the 2011 model year offering.
There is a couple of slideshows based on the same information, with more that I’ll cover some of later on, over at saab.log. Here and here.
In this entry, we have some basic dot points on the different forms that the vehicle will be available in. Please note that this information is still preliminary and may be subject to some change. It is based on a European market offering but contains information that will be applicable to most markets.

Saab Websites Update

April 16, 2010 in Saabology

100% Saab informed us through comments earlier today that 2010 models and pricing are available now on the US website.
I just specced up a Saab 9-3x in Titan Gray on the build-your-own website and it all seems to work OK.
3YU.gif
I’d still love for them to bring the US site into line with the fresher looking European sites, but having said that, I’d also love it if they were all less flash-based.
——
I hand’t seen it before, but then I don’t keep tabs on such things.
A cool April calendar is up on the Swedish Saab site.
april10_1024x768.jpg
I know we didn’t have an SU calendar at the beginning of April. That was due to low photo stocks.
I’ve got a cracker lined up for May, though.
——
Still on the Swedish site…..
Is the Saab Drivers Club a new thing? Again, it’s something I hadn’t seen before and am just wondering if it’s a new initiative.
SaabDriversClub.jpg
Unfortunately, with the way the site is configured, I can’t cut-n-paste the text into a translator to figure out what it’s all about and I can’t see anything about it on the global site.

Ny Teknik: Saab had to foot the bill for the BLS

April 15, 2010 in Saabology

You know, there was a time last year (like, all of it) when I felt like I truly hated General Motors. As the sale was negotiated, fell apart and Saab’s very future involved guillotines, windmills and other bad things, the clouds in my mind only got darker.

Funny how a good outcome can clear the mind and I’ve not given GM much thought since. This article, in today’s NyTeknik, hasn’t taken me back to those dark places. In fact, now I just sigh and think “typical”.

The Googletrans:

It cost the Saab more than a billion to develop and produce the Cadillac BLS. The car became a financial fiasco and a personal setback for General Motors model officer and alderman Bob Lutz. But headquarters in Detroit did not pay the bill for failure. It was forced to make Saab in Trollhättan.

This revealed Saab Director Jan Åke Jonsson, in connection with the trade association BIL Sweden’s voice in the week.

It was in July 2003 by Bob Lutz and other GM management gave Saab mission to develop a new version of the 9-3 that would be sold under the brand Cadillac. The aim was to strengthen the position of Cadillac luxury car in the European market. A version with four doors presented in 2006 and was followed by years of a combination. But demand was minimal, the European general agent (Kroymans Corporation) went bankrupt and ceased production 2009th

Sales reached only ten percent of the target and the party cost more than a billion crowns.

-Guess who took the bill, “said Jan Åke Jansson with a wry smile.

He believes that there are many advantages to now be free from GM. Among other things, less red tape, the freedom to self-build the brand and control over cash flow.

But of course there were also advantages of being a GM family. Among other things, owns Saab now highly modern and profoundly effective manufacturing and development facilities.

Yeah, we can thank them for some things, but there’s so much more to be happy about and that’s all to do with separation.

The BLS was good for two things. This, for starters. And some flow-on improvements in NVH for the 9-3 after the BLS was done.

Thanks to Lennart for the tip.

My three-step marketing plan for Saab.

April 15, 2010 in Editorial

This is going to make me look like a bit of a simpleton. I’m not a marketing graduate and I don’t know all the fancy terminology. But on the flipside, I have been writing this website for five years now, I’ve done a number of Saab events and I’ve seen what people respond to. I guess you call it my seat-of-the-pants marketing plan.
Or a component of it. I’m not positioning this as everything that Saab should do. Just something.
Unwritten in this plan is the omnipresent and supreme marketing element that sometimes gets overlooked in this type of dicussion – build truly great products. The best advertising you can do is to put a brilliant product in the hands of your consumer. If you do that, they’ll do quite a bit of advertising for you (whether they realise it or not).
As economists are given to do, I’ve assumed that this is in place already.
So, my simple three-step marketing plan for Saab:

  1. Do stuff.
  2. Involve real peolple in the stuff you do.
  3. Tell everyone about it.

Amazingly simple, isn’t it?
Let’s dig a little bit deeper on those, then.

Wednesday Night Snippets – Saab Saved in NM edition

April 14, 2010 in Saabology

My apologies for the lack of posting this evening. My computer got a bit tied up downloading the new album from Slash and here in Oz, we’re still on connections that make that sort of activity rather s l o w.
Great album, by the way. Stockdale does Australia proud.

Josh F has pointed out an interesting occurence in the UK.
We were all pleasantly surprised when we saw the pricing for the new 9-5 in the UK market a few weeks ago. That pleasantness has been further enhanced with the release of pricing for the new Volvo S60.
I’ve not done direct comparisons on size, but it does seem to be a somewhat smaller car. Nevertheless, Volvo seem to have priced it in line with the 9-5 (just a bit under).

Jan-Ake Jonsson not familiar with plans for Russian Saab production

April 14, 2010 in News

One of the stranger stories going around in Saab-land at the moment is that circulated by Vladimir Antonov about Saab production in Russia.
For those who don’t know, Antonov is a former shareholder in Spyker Cars NV and was forced out of his share of the company at the insistence of GM in order for the Saab sale to go ahead.
Since the transaction was finalised, Antonov has given several interviews where he’s referred to plans to produce Saabs in Russia. In that linked piece, he stated that the signing of a memorandum of understanding to do so was imminent.
What’s strange about it is that Antonov is the only one talking about this, as if he’s a de-facto spokesperson for the company. There are no plans that have been mentioned by anyone in the actual Saab executive group and the idea runs contrary to the need to have maximum production in Saab’s plan in Trollhattan.
E24 recently spoke with Saab’s head honcho, Jan-Ake Jonsson, and one of the issues they covered briefly with him was the question of production in Russia.

- Of course, Russia is an emerging market which is interesting for Saab. But I can not comment on the substance of what he has said. I have just read what he said and has not spoken to him myself, “said Jan-Ake Jonsson.

I think Antonov has a lot to offer Saab in the longer term, but I just wonder what’s going on with the interviews he’s given.
They also spoke about the coming Saab 9-2, which is a priority for the company after the new 9-3, and about distribution in Canada, which is an issue that’s progressing.

On SaabUSA Parts (site sponsor)

April 14, 2010 in sponsors

I received this email from Ted S, a regular visitor here at SU, and thought it’d be good to share it here on site.
I’m fortunate to have some fantastic, supportive and loyal sponsors here at Saabs United and it’s always great to get feedback like this about any of them. As always, I recommend you check all of them out when you’ve got any Saab related needs as they carry

——
Hello Steven,
I just wanted to let you know how much SAAB USA Parts have helped me out recently.
My wife has a “slight problem” with judging the width of her ’03 9-5 Aero Sedan, when it comes to going in & out of one of our garages. It is the one-car garage, which is attached to the house. I use the three-car free standing garage for my shop, and to house our two 1990 SPGs, and my new Audi A5.
Several times over the past few years, she has caught the RHS door mirror on the garage door frame, and scratched the mirror, or cracked the glass itself. Those were minor repairs which I took care of myself. Her latest run in with the garage had her actually destroy the mirror housing completely. It was only a matter of time. I had put the car in the garage the previous evening…so it was my fault…not hers for not paying attention. After 36 years of marriage…I have learned to simply say nothing…just start ordering parts.
So I called up the SAAB service manager who I have been dealing with for many years, and asked if I could just get the housing, as the mirror itself was still functional…surprisingly. He said no, but would order a new mirror for me…at the cost somewhere north of USD$250.00. I was not pleased…but what could I do? I needed the mirror fixed.
In the mean time, I was on SU, and decided to click on the Saab USA Parts banner ad to have a look around. And what did I find? You guessed it. A mirror housing…painted to match…for USD$75.90! I placed an order immediately, and called to cancel the order for the entire mirror. Received the new housing within a week, took 15 minutes to replace it, and all is right with the world.
Now yesterday, her driver’s door window came off its track, and the window would not close. Not her fault this time. Just a matter of one of the “window rollers” having broken. In the past, when I have had a similar thing happen, I ended up having to replace the whole window regulator…and those are not only expensive…they are no fun to replace. So I got the window back in its track, closed it, removed the fuse, so she couldn’t inadvertently open the window, and buttoned the car back up.
This time, I went directly to SAAB USA Parts (didn’t even bother to contact my dealer), and lo & behold…there for USD$13.22 (for a pair) were the exact parts I needed to do the repair! I ordered two extra sets, just in case I need them in the future for the other three doors, and they should arrive in two days.
These folks do provide great service, and I know I will be using them for a long time to come. They are not too far from where I live “as the crow flies”…but because there is Long Island Sound between us, driving is a bit of a chore. I’ll leave that up to FedEx!
Just thought you should know.
Cheers…Ted

2010 Saab 9-3 available with V6 in Poland

April 14, 2010 in News

Many markets around the world are going without the V6 engine in the 2010 model Saab 9-3. This includes the big three: the United States, Sweden and Great Britain.
I’ve recently received information from Bravada, one of our regular visitors and a GMI correspondent, indicating that the Polish market – quite a passionate one, as the Saab Support Convoys showed us – will have a V6 option for 2010.
2010Saab9-3Poland.jpg

The V6 is a small seller, so when it was withdrawn from major markets, it wasn’t that big a surprise to me.
But having it available, at least, seems to make some sense for those who want it and for those who consider it the mark of a prestige brand.
Personally speaking, it’s not really an issue for me. But I know some will be scratching their heads at this one.
