Saab’s next challenge – manufacturing efficiency

May 15, 2010 in News

One of several good things that GM left behind at Saab (9-5 and 9-4x, anyone?) was a factory that became one of the most efficient in GM’s arsenal. So much so that Saab won an efficiency award late last year – no mean feat in a country like Sweden.

That sort of efficiency doesn’t happen overnight and Saab had a number of very efficient plants to learn from and benchmark themselves against within GM’s European plants. Of course, with Saab’s sale to Spyker, that access to external knowledge is now severely diminished. Saab now have to find another way to keep themselves at the edge.

Swedish magazine, Ny Teknik has been looking at this. The Googletrans:

……”I believe in Nissan as benchmarking partners to Trollhättan factory. Saab has already had a degree of cooperation with people from the Japanese company. The relations are good,” said Gert Frick at consulting firm JMAC Scandinavia – working with Saab to find a partner to benchmark against.

JMAC, “Japan Management Association Consultants”, is a global consulting firm with inputs and contacts in the Japanese automotive industry.

Nissan and Toyota are somewhat known for having succeeded in fusing technology development to purchasing, marketing and production into a functioning whole. Just what Saab needs to do.

- Production is our strength. We must not lose ground in productivity and efficiency. At the same time we must get our various departments to start work together. The production will have to work together with departments in GM were more separated – technological development, marketing and purchasing, “says Gunnar Brunius.

Saab want to bring their breakeven point down to around 85,000 vehicle sales per year. Obviously, keeping abreast of the latest lean production methods and integrating operations better are going to be a key to this.

It’s just another of the challenges facing Saab and one that you may have not paid much mind to.

Adrian Hallmark on Saab in China

May 14, 2010 in News

There’s been some detailed reporting at Wards Autos, who have been speaking to Saab’s new Executive Director of Sales, Adrian Hallmark. There are a lot of topics covered, but the most fascinating one is possibly a more aggressive entry into the Chinese market.
We know that Saab has pockets of enthusiastic fans all over the world, and that includes China as well. The Saab Support Convoys saw a number of gatherings there – Guangzhou, Shanghai (twice), Ningbo, and Beijing. Hallmark is quite keen on Taiwan as well, and we know how much they love their Saabs.
Here’s what Hallmark had to say:

Newly reorganized Saab Automobile AB intends to enter the booming Chinese market Oct. 1 with a soon-to-be-named distribution partner and an eye on growing sales to at least 5,000 units annually within three years.
“And if it all went well, maybe close to 10,000 with our current product range,” says Adrian Hallmark, executive director-sales.
China represents just one of several new markets Saab plans to enter near-term…..
…..also wants to restart operations in Canada and Japan and launch sales in Australia, Russia, Brazil and perhaps India in the coming months.
But China, where first-quarter sales totaled 4.61 million units, nearly twice the U.S. volume, easily carries the most potential.

The following shows the value of recruiting Hallmark. It really was a strategic masterstroke.

Hallmark knows the situation in China firsthand. Before joining Saab in March, he worked as executive director-Asia at Volkswagen AG and also oversaw the introduction of Bentley Motor Cars Ltd. in the region.
Volkswagen, he claims, has very little brand awareness in China. It sold 970,000 cars and trucks in the region last year by linking with local companies Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and FAW Group Corp., but sold another 13,000 without their support.
“If Volkswagen can do 13,000 import cars with virtually no brand awareness and no benefit from being linked to FAW, or SAIC, anybody can enter the market,” he says.

Hallmark believes Saabs coming vehicles, the 9-5 and 9-4x in particular, place Saab in a great position to make inroads into China.

“…..for us, either by design or serendipity, we are well-positioned in terms of the footprint of the vehicle and the drive trains that we’ve got planned,” Hallmark says.
“They are perfect for China. And with my little bit of experience there and passion for the market, it’s just a question of being hyper-aggressive, hyper-prioritized in terms of where you go,” he adds. “Don’t get distracted, find the right partners, get the back office support and go.”

It’s a very interesting read from Wards. It’s subscription only, though there’s no need to subscribe to comments, where it mysteriously appeared earlier today.
The article goes on to talk about the importance of the US market and the position of the company as it builds its inventory and tries to re-enter the marketplace.
Thanks to Aaron C in comments.

Someone in Australia should buy this Saab 99EMS

May 14, 2010 in Saabology

It’s not often, but occasionally a good car comes up for sale at a good price and the whole package is good enough to mention here.
This Saab 99 EMS is for sale in Ballarat, in country Victoria (my favourite place for the best McDonalds vanilla thickshakes back in 1980s) and looks like it could be a decent runner given the right combination of condition and price.
If there’s an interested party here in Oz, I concur with Pete – the guy who spotted and photographed the car – that an offer around $2K would probably secure it.

I was up in Ballarat today on an errand and chanced upon this beautiful 99 ems sedan at a used car dealer.
Its from a deceased estate, has been fully restored and is really in very very good nick. Has had $5000+ spent on it, vg soccerballs.
Only let downs were a c900 steering wheel and a couple of really minor surface spots of rust. I didn’t hear it run, but its had head work and timing chain done. Overall really clean and all the hard work done.
Best part is the guy wants only 2995 for it, he never wanted it in the first place but bought it as a favour to the guys widow. I reckon a courageous starting offer of 2000 wouldn’t be too far off and would be an absolute bargain.

Here are the pics. The car is at Oliver’s Cars on Howitt Street, for anyone who’s keen.

Saab US leasing deals now appearing

May 14, 2010 in News

I heard some good news from a dealer in the US today, telling me in a very happy tone that he’s finally placed an order for 20 new Saab 9-3s and 10 new Saab 9-5s.
As we’ve seen already, new stock is starting to trickle in, including the Saab 9-3x. Things are finally starting to move forward for Saab and their US dealers.
Automotive News has a good article today, including details of the new leasing deal for the Saab 9-3. This is significant in itself because Saab hasn’t been able to offer leasing as an option for customers for some time now.

Saab can move on the marketing front now that it has begun slowly building up its U.S. pipeline. The 9-3 has been trickling into the United States since late March. Before that, dealers had not had a shipment of Saab vehicles since last June…..
….Saab is offering a 2010 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0 with automatic transmission for $399 a month with a $3,374 down payment; the term is 48 months. Advertising to promote the lease program will be primarily newspapers, direct mail, digital and social media. Some co-op advertising is planned. The program expires June 1.

There are more details available at the Current Offers section of the SaabUSA website.

PRESS RELEASE – NEW SALEM SAAB, Albany, NY

May 14, 2010 in News

It gives me a great deal of pleasure to be publishing this release today.
The journey for New Salem Saab over the last 24 months, and particularly the last 4 months or so, mirrors what Saab went through in 2009 and early 2010. They’ve been within a breath of being forced to close – until today.
I’ll let Darryl Carl tell the story. My congratulations to him and this team on a new chapter for one of the oldest family-owned dealerships in the United States.

——
Good Day Saab Friends,
This is not your typical press release. This is a letter of celebration! Today is a historic day indeed. Yet another chapter for New Salem Saab was closed this morning only to start reading from a new chapter, one with excitement, growth and inspiration!
This morning New Salem Saab received final word that we HAVE BEEN approved by Saab Cars North America to move forward as a Saab Dealer here in the Albany market! To explain the road we had to travel to complete this nearly impossible task would be only a reminder of a period where time stood still, the sky had no color and anticipation had no direction.
Living in a cryogenic state of dormancy for the last two years has been a humbling and educational experience for all of us involved. We are proud to be able to continue to give and receive the support, trust and loyalty from our many friends and customers who believed in the brand and our dealership in maintaining our operation.
We still have a long road to hoe. We plan to provide unsurpassed communications through social media, websites, message boards, cell phones and every avenue we can utilize to answer questions quickly, honestly and keep you and your family actively informed in a positive engaging manner. I will personally be available to our customer base almost 24/7 through these types of media.
Today time is passing again in wholesale fashion, the Northern Lights are in full bloom and the anticipation has a pointed direction. New Salem Saab will reach yet another milestone in just a few months. New Salem Saab will turn 50 years old in 2011. That’s 50 years with the Saab brand we love and believe in completely with a brand new ownership and leadership which will steward this brand to heights we’ve known we can achieve.

Possible Saab dealership setup for Canada

May 13, 2010 in News

I’ve been tapping some sources in Canada since the announcement and in a Djup Strupe manner, this is the outline I’ve received for the dealership setup there at the moment.
This isn’t confirmed yet and as you can see there are some that are still in talks and yet to be appointed.
Vancouver – 1 ready to go another in talks for total of 2
Calgary – 1 ready to go
Edmonton – Working on options
Winnipeg – 1 ready to go.
Toronto – 2 ready to go. Hopefully 1 more to be found.
Kitchener – 1 ready to go.
London – 1 ready to go
Ottawa – 1 ready to go
Montreal – 1 ready to go and looking for options.
Quebec City – 1 ready to go.
Halifax – 1 ready to go
St John’s – 1 ready to go.
That’s 12 ready to go with another one in talks and several markets looking at additional options. The announcement mentioned around 20 dealerships being the starting point, so I’d imagine some of those options are starting to take shape already.
Names of dealers haven’t been mentioned but I’d imagine most of these markets had a dealer previously and it would be those same dealers in most instances.
It’ll be interesting to see if any new dealerships pop up.

AFP report on Saab

May 13, 2010 in News

Jounalist Joseph Szczesny, who’s name rings a bell from recent reports about Saab Cars North America, has caught up was present at the Canada announcement with Jan-Ake Jonsson and Victor Muller in the last day or so and he has published a report online via AFP.
There’s not a whole heap that’s new in the report. It’s a general story about Saab’s future health, etc.
There are a couple of takeaways worth noting, however…..

“We had been closed down for seven weeks,” Jonsson told reporters in Detroit.
“We couldn’t order any material or do any advertising because we were in liquidation,” he said. “Now we have about 4,500 cars in inventory. We’re completely focused on getting our products out as quickly as possible.”

In the United States, which is Saab’s single largest market, Saab has reached several key objectives since its February 23 purchase by Dutch sports car maker Spyker, noted Michael Colleran, president and chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America.
SAAB USA has built a staff, re-filled the pipeline to its 207 dealers and signed an agreement with what was then GMAC but is now Ally Bank, which is providing financing to Saab dealers and customers.

My emphasis added there to note the name change from GMAC to Ally Bank.

The styling for the 9-3 hasn’t been frozen yet but it will be more sporty and aggressive than the current sedan model. “Think aircraft,” said Mueller, who said Saab has to be more distinctive to set itself off from other manufacturers.

The schedule must be late 2012 for that new 9-3. It seems too late to not have the styling finalised if it were a MY2012 car to be seen late 2011.

Saab also has ambitious plans to expand its presence in China, Brazil and Russia and eventually India. “You could see the day when there are more Saab’s sold in China than in the US,” Jonsson said.

Bring it on…..

More imagery from the Saab Canada announcement

May 13, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve just received a few more images from the event at Budds Saab yesterday, to announce the re-establishment of the Saab sales network in Canada.
This images are from the host of the event – Chris Budd.
And as an aside, some video from the event should be coming through from Kroum soon, too. Stay tuned for that.
Chris Budd got to spend a bit of time with the Saab execs yesterday (Messrs Muller, Jonsson, Hallmark, Colleran) and was really impressed with the energy, focus, tenacity and enthusiasm on display. They had a really good turnout in the evening, too, with around 150 people attending a function for customers there.
To use his own words, the pulse is alive and well!

Saab Festival Website online

May 13, 2010 in Saabology

It doesn’t have all the programme details online yet, but there is a Saab Festival website now available online.
The site confirms that this year’s festival will be a special celebration of the Saab 96, which will be 50 years old this year.
All you overseas visitors better bring a freight container, too, as the SDCC will be having another sale during the festival and there’s sure to be plenty of rare parts and bargains available.
SaabFestivalWebsite.JPG
Again, I’d encourage everyone who possibly can make it, to get along. It’s going to be a fantastic festival and a celebration of Saabs independence, as well as the iconic Saab 96.
You won’t regret it, I can assure you.

Saab photochops popping up online

May 13, 2010 in Saabology

People seem to be very keen on drawing Saabs since the company separated from General Motors a few months ago. They know there’s a few new models around the corner and they’re keen to imagine how they might look, both the 2012 Saab 9-3 and the possible smaller Saab.
Autobild have published some familiar images drawn up by Motor Forecast that show their image of the next Saab 9-3. Click here for four images.
AutobildSaab9-3.jpg
I understand the need to use the design language of the Saab 9-5, but this just isn’t doing it for me. My imagination sees the hatch variant being the core of that new model, and it doesn’t see it as some pseudo-hatch that apologises for being what it is (see img #2 at Autobild).
——
Another site called Motorbox has published some images of what it sees in store for a smaller Saab.
There seems to be two variations here: one with a teardrop shape at the back a-la descriptions by Victor Muller, and one with a more 9-X type rear.
wpsaab92varenna-12574-004-f.jpg

I think I prefer the 9-X type rear, personally.

Selling Saabs In Canada – one guy’s view

May 12, 2010 in Saabology

This just appeared in comments and there are parts of it that resonated so much with me that I thought it would be good to bring it here to the front page.
I don’t know what International Fleet Sales has in store for Saab in Canada, but as stated below, Canada has the potential to be a really lucrative market for Saab. All of the geographic and environmental prerequisites are place. In short: Saabs make sense for driving in Canada.
Our commenter is Bernard, and here’s what he had to say in response to the news that Saab would be re-starting their Canadian effort with the 2011 model year:

——
This is a great opportunity for Saab to rethink the way that they are sold in Canada.
While Saabs are fairly popular here (or have been in the past), it’s always seemed to me that they’ve under-achieved. After all, Saabs builds cars that are perfect for the Canadian environment (salt, bad roads, long distances between major cities).
Saab needs to capitalize on this. Almost everyone (outside of Toronto and Vancouver) knows that you don’t drive a BMW or a Merc in the winter. Their wiring looms just melt away in the salt, and their suspensions aren’t sturdy enough for your average Canadian pothole. Saabs, on the other hand, thrive in these conditions.
I could see Saab offering a standard package that includes 4 Hakkapeliittas, steel rims, and 10 years of complimentary high-quality rust proofing (not that less-than-useless “electronic rustproofing” that some dealers have offered in the past).
It should go without saying that heated seats and mirrors should be standard in Canada.
The next step is to look at the servicing experience. Having a small number of dealers is O.K., as far as that goes, however having to drive all the way across one of our major cities in the morning and evening to get your car serviced is a non-starter. That adds four hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic to your day.
Saab definitely needs a network of authorized independent service facilities. Dealers may not see things this way, but it helps them in the long term (more market penetration, more sales).
I would also like to see a sales process that is more geared towards getting the exact car that you want at a good price rather than haggling on whatever the dealer has in stock (which is typically almost nothing).
That can be achieved with a strong web presence and more transparency. In other words, tell me what you have in stock and how much I should expect to pay for it (including any fees that magically appear after the deal has been made).
That goes against Canadian car-selling tradition, but Saab isn’t Chevy and today’s consumer has way more options.

Saab Club Nederland show some community spirit with “Roll on Roll off”

May 12, 2010 in Saabology

This is fantastic. I’ve gotta say, the Dutchies are setting the bar pretty high these days.
Some Saab clubs get together and go out for a drive, maybe a meal. It’s largely a social event and that’s a good thing. Nothing wrong with that at all. It’s what having a common interest is all about – enjoying it together.
A group of members from Saab Club Nederland have those sort of events, too. But recently, for the 12th time, they had an event called Roll On Roll Off, which is an event where they give their time to a part of the community in order to provide an experience they wouldn’t normally get.
The following background info was provided by Nic S.

Wednesday Snippets – JAJ, Saab Magazine and a free Spyker C8!

May 12, 2010 in Saabology

The Saab Newsroom has a wonderful post from Jan-Ake Jonsson talking about their run in the 2010 Mille Miglia.

…..what made the biggest impression on me were the two magnificent vintage Saab 9-3s that we drove. What became apparent as we took to the roads was that in 1957 our designers were already producing cars with exceptional handling characteristics. The fact that we were able to keep up with cars that had 100 — 200 bhp, when we had only 50 bhp, is a fitting tribute to the talent of the designers who worked on these classic models.

It’s great reading.
——
I featured a Spyker C8 showing at JMK Saab in New Jersey a few days ago.
There’s a bunch more photos on Flickr and they’re well worth a look.

Thanks to Hans R for the link.
——
Also available in the sidebar of the newsroom is a link to a digital copy of the latest Saab Magazine.
SaabMag2010.JPG
It’s 70 pages long and has some great features on both the Saab 9-5 and the Saab 9-3x, featuring some stunning photography along the way. The non-car stuff has a focus on independent thinking and they interview seven people from different fields to get their thoughts on doing things their way.
As always, it’s a great read.
I never knew they distributed them this way, so thanks to Dippen for a link to this in comments.
