July 27, 2010 in News

Just in from the Twitter feed of Liz Claman of Fox Business News, our own Victor Muller and Jan-Åke Jonsson will appear on that network at 3pm EDT this afternoon, July 26.

I do not believe that I’ve ever actually watched any Fox Business News network programming in the past, so, if you’re like me and need to know how to tune in, the channel finder is on the Fox Business News front page.

(Comments about the relative merits of Fox News will be deleted. This is not a media or political forum. Thanks in advance for your restraint.)

Huge ups to Brett for posting the video in comments, here it is!!!

Official North American Launch of Saab 9-5 July 27 (tomorrow)

July 27, 2010 in News

Well, it’s finally here. A moment that we’ve all anticipated for months: the formal introduction of the new Saab 9-5 to North America. I expect a huge amount of media fanfare, particularly in the automotive press, but I’ll go out on a limb and predict that a fair number of financial media outlets will watch closely, too. The Saab saga is simply too juicy to ignore. A forgotten and neglected division of a corporate titan is abandoned and liquidated, alternately fought over and scorned, and then rises on a wave of enthusiasm and optimism lead by an unlikely hero from the Netherlands. To paraphrase a recent movie title, “There will be buzz”.

The launch is officially scheduled for Tuesday, July 27th 8:30AM-9:30AM EDT / 3:30PM-4:30PM CET.

Thanks to the efforts of the fine folks at Saab Cars North America, we are all able to listen in via the web. Please register here if you are interested in attending the event via the webcast.

I will be listening to the replay in the afternoon or evening afterward due to a schedule conflict (I have to work, you know!).   I invite your comments on the webcast and the event under this post.  The official press release is after the jump. Read the rest of this entry →

Problem with Trollhattansaab.net

July 26, 2010 in Troll Stuff

Hi all.

Just a quick housekeeping note.

It seems that my old site, trollhattansaab.net, has been infected through some back-door vulnerability and has some malware present that my try to load itself to your computer if you access that site.

This malware may try to divert you to a third party, which could be malicious in nature.

I’ve contacted my server host and the problem seems to be across a cluster of machines that they operate. I’ve received some instructions on how to fix this problem, but I will not have time to execute this until later in the next few days.

Please stay away from trollhattansaab.net until I post here that I’ve completed those instructions.

SaabsUnited is handled by a different company and the servers are in a different physical location, so there is no issue here at SU.

SOC 2010 Mystery Car Feature

July 26, 2010 in Saabology

With so many great cars at the SOC 2010 in Aurora, Ohio this weekend, where does one start?  With the best feel-good story that one can muster, that’s where.

Naturally, this well-cared-for and obviously clean Saab 1958 93b is a wonderful story on its own.  Resplendent in red with the matching wheels, this car would be remarkable solely on the basis of looks and sound, but its history places it at the top of my “survivor” list.

Enjoy the photos and click through for the “rest of the story“.

Monday morning travel snippets

July 26, 2010 in Saabology

What a weekend!

Whilst Eggs et al were having a great time at the US Saab Owners Convention, I was here with the Saab Owners Club GB having a great time in Bath, a beautiful city with a postcard view at every turn.

I’ve got plenty of stories to tell about some amazing Saabs and I’ve managed to fulfill a few dreams in the last two days, but I’ll tell you more about all that later.

Here’s a summary of my last few days.

——

We started the weekend with a trip up to Birmingham to see Dave R, which is where I had a rather exhilarating drive of Dave’s Jaguar XF-R (supercharged V8 with around 500hp) and a look at the new Jaguar XJ in the local showroom. The XJ really is a magnificently finished car, one that exudes quality and despite some hefty prices, one that’s already selling well. It’s a car that lives up to its brand promise, which is why it’s selling. I think there’s something in that….

Next morning we rode with Dave in his pristine early 1980′s vintage Saab 99 down to Bath, meeting up with another Saab Owner, Elly, in his magnificent 1988 900 Convertible.

There were some magnificent cars on show at the Saab Owners Club annual meet. I’ll write more about them later in the week, but here’s a few highlights…..

This Saab 93 is absolutely incredible and the guy who owns it rebuilt it all by hand. What’s more, he’s got three other vintage Saabs that are equally impressive.

This is one of just a handful of Troll R’s ever made. A very understated beast of a 9-5 with immaculate details inside and out.

The local Saab dealer put on a good display, including the new Carlsson edition Saab 9-3, and of course the new Saab 9-5. The cars got a lot of attention all day.

I wrote last week about falling in love all over again with the Saab Sonett II at the Saab Festival. There were only 258 of this model made with a two-stroke engine and one of those was at the meeting at Bath. It was beautifully presented and yes, I got to go for a ride in it. John, the owner, still runs this car regularly and has taken it on several drives from England to Sweden.

I can’t wait to tell you more about this incredible Saab 900 Carlsson and the dedication of its owner, Craig. It’s a great story.

(Owner of the Saabhuy blog and the man who I’m dubbing Saab’s unofficial ambassador for international relations) Etienne came over from Belgium in an early 900 he’d just bought for pennies from an elderly lady. Owners of the 900 would be familiar with a common condition where the roof lining of the Saab 900 sags. This lady had an interesting fix for it:

The Saab Owners Club annual meeting finished up with a great dinner and a quiz (which I missed as we had to check into our accommodation) but look at it as a visitor, the day was an outstanding one and I think all concerned should be pretty pleased with how things went.

I’ll have more from Bath later in the week.

The next morning we jumped on board with Mike P and his wife, Hilary, and took the scenic route to their home, stopping in at a very picturesque village called Bourton on the Water.

There’s a car museum in this village, and outside the museum, the owner is engaged in building a very interesting living sculpture using some wire and vegetation. It’s perfectly proportioned, too.

Mike was towing a rather huge caravan with his Dame Edna Saab 9-5 TiD Estate and the car made pretty easy work of it, to be honest. The outgoing Saab was mocked by some in the press, but it really is a fantastic cruising vehicle.

Getting a ride in a two-stroke Sonett was one of my dreams fulfilled. Getting to drive Mike’s Saab Sonett III was another. I’ll have a lot more to write about this in the next few days, but it was a BLAST.

I’ll explain this photo later, too.

We finished the weekend off with another great dinner with Mike and Hilary, as well as Dave R and his wife Eileen. If that dinner was the perfect ending to a great weekend, then driving the Sonett back to Mike’s place was the cherry on top :-) . I love this car.

——

Our vacation continues through to the end of the week, but I’ll keep updating with important news as it comes to hand, as well as snippets from our trip.

Have a great week.

SOC 2010 Group Photo

July 26, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve just got back from 2 days offline, attending the Saab Owners Club annual meeting in Bath, in England.

Whilst that’s been happening, the Saab Owners Conference has been happening in the US and we’ve already had some great snippets come through from Eggs about that one, with some more to come. It seems VM’s and JAJ’s enthusiasm has infected the US group, which is good to hear.

Greg Abbott has sent through some images, including the all-important group photo from the conference. There’ll be plenty more images to come in the next few days, but my thanks to Greg for this one (and a few more)….

Saab Owner’s Convention 2010: Top 9 Things I learned

July 26, 2010 in Saabology

Greetings once again from the Saab Owner’s Convention in Aurora, Ohio. As we wind down here after the round table panel discussion with Victor Muller (CEO of Spyker Cars), Jan-Åke Jonsson (CEO of Saab Automoble), Mike Colleran (President, Saab Cars North America) and John Libbos (Saab Product Manager, North America), which, by the way, was a great discussion, here are the top nine things I’ve learned this weekend:

9.   If you bring your Saab 9-2x to the track for some aggressive driving, make sure that you have a baffled oil pan. Since the 9-2x is a Subaru at heart, it employs the horizontally opposed (so-called boxer) engine configuration. Because the heads are on both extremes of the engine, this set-up requires an exceedingly wide oil pan.   This means that most of the oil sloshes to one side of the pan in hard cornering on sweeping turns.  The seconds-long lack of lubrication at high revs spelled disaster for one SOC track-day participant.

8.  The new Saab 9-5 is a real stunner in person. Plenty of ink has already been spilled here, but the car lives up to the hype.

7.  Our brand’s leadership has great vision and great enthusiasm. Reading and seeing are two different things.  This is the first time I’ve seen our brand’s relatively new leadership in person.  They are all seemingly working on the things that we wish for Saab.  Their confidence and enthusiasm are infectious.

6.  Victor Muller and Jan-Åke Jonsson spend way too much time together. These guys are finishing each other’s sentences (figuratively) and they’ve only known each other since late November.

5.  One of the reasons that Koenigsegg backed out of buying Saab was that the BAIC deal was too complex to execute. Jan-Åke Jonsson credited Koenigsegg with a great deal of vision for coming up with that concept, but there are many, many contractual pieces that have to happen to get the right kind of joint venture in place in China.  These additional funds were imperative for the KG offer.  Of course, we now know that BAIC bought the outgoing 9-5, so either Spyker was more adept and made it happen, or they were better funded and could forgo the Chinese funds in the short term.  Just an interesting footnote to watershed moment in Saab history.

4.  GM knows how to restore cars. Wow, how good are all of the former GM Heritage Collection cars?  They are immaculate. Pristine.  They even found and restored a Saabo!!  The attention to detail is truly astounding.  If you find no good in GM, please at least give them credit for preserving these great Saabs.

1967 Saab 95 and Saabo

1967 Saab 95 and Saabo

3.  Peter Backstrom, proprietor of the Saab Museum, can be bought with Tim Tams. Yes, Peter has revealed that the only reason that he gives Swade any attention at all is because Swade has successfully hooked him on the Tim Tam Slam.  I have secured my own deal with Peter now that I know that Tim Tams are sold in the United States under the Pepperidge Farm brand name.  So, if you’re visiting the factory, bring a few packages of Tim Tams and doors will open.

2.  Jan-Åke Jonsson’s wife reads SaabsUnited.com to find out what Jan-Åke is planning. Yes, Swade is the source for all things Saab.  Even for the insiders!!

1.  The global affection for our own Steven Wade is even greater than I expected. Unprompted, Victor Muller spent about six of his 30-minute speech at the SOC awards banquet praising the mobilization and enthusiasm lead by, as he put it, “a guy on the island of Tasmania, about as far from Sweden as you can get, who cared enough to do something with an idea planted in the Netherlands.”  He credited Steven with single-handedly turning away the enormous negative tide consuming Saab and replacing it with a grass-roots movement to save the brand.  Kudos to Swade!!!  Additionally, everyone recognizes him and to a man they praise his work ethic, humor and generosity.  I wholeheartedly concur!!

SOC 2010 — Great cars, great folks

July 25, 2010 in Saabology

Wow, it’s been a long, long time since I’ve written on SaabsUnited.  Too long.  Swade’s been keeping the place up well; I’m a fan of the remodel.  I hope that all are well.  Some of you I’ve seen today and I appreciate the goodwill.

Greetings from the Saab Owner’s Convention in Aurora, Ohio, USA.

I’ve loved the hospitality thus far.  No doubt in my mind that Saab people are, as a whole, great folks to be around.  The Saab Club of North America are to be commended for the great rapport that they enjoy with the owners that actively participate in events like this.  Naturally, it’s also very exciting to meet our brand’s corporate ambassadors at a grass-roots gathering such as this convention.

Needless to say, Victor Muller, Jan-Åke Jonsson and Mike Colleran don’t have to spend their precious summer weekends with us, yet they do.  And I, for one, am thankful for their generosity.

And, of course, the cars are magnificent, especially when you add Mr. Backstrom’s fleet (read:  museum collection) into the mix.   I’ve got a trove of photos to post, but I’ve not got the time at present for all.  This will have to do for now.

Unfortunately, after a few tribulations, my own 1991 900 Turbo Convertible developed a severe breathing problem as I approached Cincinnati, Ohio on my way to the SOC.  So, to make the story short, I swapped the 900 for a Chrysler 300C about one-third of the way into the trip.  Fitting.  (See what I did there?  900, 300, one-third.)  More on that later as well.

Saab Sonett II on Ebay – rare opportunity

July 23, 2010 in Saabology

A Saab Sonett II is a beautiful but quite rare thing. A quick look around the internets right now tells me there’s just one for sale in the usual US-based classified sites, so this one coming up for sale – and in such good condition – presents what one might call an opportunity.

It’s not for the feint of heart however, as there’s an asking price that’s considerable compared to some other vintage Saabs. It does look to be in superb condition, though, with a genuine sounding owner who gives a pretty full description of the car and the work done.

What we have here is a 1969 Saab Sonett V4 located in Texas and restored to some level of competition specification, though apparently it has never been run competitively in any events.

You should check out the full description on Ebay but be quick, as there’s less than a day to run on the sale.

As I write this, the car is priced at just over $9K, but there’s still room for growth there as the reserve is mentioned in the sale details, at $13K.

I have no relationship with the seller. I just love Sonett II’s and think this is a cracker of a car.

SOC 2010 update – track day

July 23, 2010 in Saabology

The 2010 Saab Owners Convention started yesterday with a track day at Nelson Ledges Race Track.

Million-mile Saab guy, Peter Gilbert, has checked in with a written report and Greg Abbott has been kind enough to send along some photos, so here’s the combination of both served up as a Day 1 report….

——

We just returned from a full day at Nelson Ledges Race Track, with cloudless skies, mid- eighties temperatures and wonderful camaraderie. The plethora of Saab models was well represented on the track, other than the 96, late 9-3′s or 9-5′s.

The track has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 24-hour Saab Longest Day run and the two yellow Sonnets which participated were actually running today.

Thank God there were no accidents or spin-outs but several cars had breakdowns, of which two had engine mechanical failure, a couple with brake problems and one 2-stroke Sonnet that could not be diagnosed.

This was a particularly fun day for me as I had only driven my 2001 Viggen for an hour at Road America, Wisconsin, with stock specifications. Now I had the opportunity to open her up with the SQR update and with much better Bilstein heavy duty shocks. This was a particular treat as the Viggen was the most popular car on the track and to this day was probably Saab’s best kept secret, as so many people have never had the experience like we had to have so much fun.

Carspotting in London

July 23, 2010 in Saabology

Well, I’m officially a London tourist now, complete with backpack, puzzled look and a map flapping in the wind. And unless I’m on a tour bus then it’s fair to say I haven’t got the foggiest idea where I am.

This city is so big, with so many narrow streets sporting three-or-four-storey buildings on both sides that it’s almost impossible to pick a landmark and get your bearings. But we survived and made it ‘home’ OK in the end.

The other thing I’ve noticed about London is money – that is, you’d need a bucketload of it to live here. I don’t know what the salaries are like here, but I assume they’re pretty decent as the cost of almost everything is pretty high. Trish and I figured that unless you were pretty well off, living in the city would condemn you to watching everyone else enjoy themselves.

The pricetags of most goods seem to have the same numbers on them as the pricetags for similar goods in Australia, only with a pound sign instead of a dollar sign. And with the rough conversion rate being about 2 to 1, we might have to sell a kidney just to get a transport to the airport next week :-)

Ah, what the heck, it’s a holiday, right?

——

Whilst we were travelling around today, I did manage to snap a few photos of automotive interest. These just go to show that there’s a fair bit of bling on the streets here (and some good Swedish common sense, too).

You’ll have to take my word about this first photo as I had just seconds to confirm the identity of the tail-lamps, whip my camera up and snap off a photo before the bus rounded a corner, but the flash of aqua blue you can see here is actually a Koenigsegg parked outside a hotel.

This Lamborghini was taking a nice cruise along Knightsbridge:

I also saw my first live Porsche Panamera today, but didn’t get a photo. And there are more Boxters and 911′s than you can poke a stick at. A fair swag of Ferraris, too, and if I photographed every Bentley I saw then I’d have RSI quicker than you could say “big tarty Volkswagen’.

Another brand that was reasonably common (for a six-figure supercar) is Aston Martin. I would be lucky to see one of these if I spent a weekend in Melbourne or Sydney but I must have seen at least half a dozen today….

The Mecca for luxury cars, though, had to be the Dorchester Hotel. I will swear on a stack of Bibles that the first time we passed it on the bus, there was a Bugatti Veyron out the front. I didn’t get a photo.

The next time we encountered the Dorchester we were on foot so there were no issues getting some photos of the collection out front, most of which were adorned with number plates with Arabic script (so please pardon the pun about Mecca). Unfortunately, the Veyron was gone, but it’s exoticar replacement wasn’t too shabby….

That’s a Pagani you can see quite clearly there in the first photo, along with some other exotic metal from Germany, Italy and England. Amazing stuff. The collective pricetag of the metal in that carpark would pay for my home around 8 or 9 times over.

I was quite pleased to see the boundaries of the City of London are marked by statues of the gryphon (that is, the area controlled by the Greater London Authority, not the whole city including Westminster and all the boroughs that we all usually associate with ‘London’). Here’s but one….

I think I’ll have to write to Boris Johnston and see if we can’t get a Saab parked at each one :-) (OK, maybe I’m not the first to think of that…..)

There were some real Saabs out and about, too. Bonus points if you locals can guess where this one is parked….

And this one was rather special…..

The 9-5 was running as a blocker for a convoy that was following up behind. Unfortunately the bus took off and we didn’t get to see who was following, but it wasn’t the only time I saw that type of action today.

——

Oooooh, Your Saab is On Fire

I haven’t had time to check the news for myself today, but a quick scan of comments shows a truckload of Saabs being burned in Belgium.

Poor form, that. Hopefully the people who did it will be brought to justice. Karma’s a bitch, sometimes.

There’s video at that link.

Wednesday Night Snippets – SOC2010 Edition

July 22, 2010 in Saabology

Greetings all from Dulwich, in London, where I’ll be for most of the next week except for when I pop on over to Bath for the Saab Owners Club GB gathering.

Geez, this is a big city. We are still trying to find our bearings after a full day, but hopefully we’ll get busy tomorrow.

Lots of Saabs around here. I saw my first within two minutes of leaving Heathrow and have seen more than a dozen in my brief wanderings today. Lots of potential here, too.

——

The big event – starting tomorrow in the US, in fact, is the Saab Owners Convention for 2010. It’s being held in Aurora, Ohio and with VM and JAJ attending, it’s sure to be a great meeting for all you US Saabers.

Please do hit me up with some emails as things progress as I’d love to post on how it’s going. I wish I could be there.

——

I posted a few entries full of photos from the Saab Festival car show (part one and two), but for those who would like a fuller view of the whole event, check out these galleries on Flickr.

Whilst history will teach that I most likely will, there’s no use pretending that Saab Talk doesn’t exist. Another year, another Saab blog.

——

One of the guys I met and chatted quite a bit with at the Saab Festival last week was Jim Smart, a Saab tech who runs an indy Saab shop called Smart Motors in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

And check out one of his cars!

Safe travels, Jim! It was a pleasure.

Snippets – Wrapping up the Saab Festival

July 21, 2010 in Saabology

It’s our last day in Sweden and internet access in England for the next week might be sketchy (we’re staying at a home owned by extended family and I don’t know what access they have and they won’t be there to tell me). So I figured I’d better do a summary entry on things that transpired at the Saab Festival in 2010.

Before I do that, however, perhaps I should mention that this isn’t our last Saab event for this trip. That’ll be the Saab Owners Club GB annual get together in Bath on Saturday – hurrah!

This Festival was quite a bit different to the last one. Back in 2007, no-one really knew who I was and I could move around quietly, gather some info and report on it quite quickly.

Not so in 2010. I spent the lion’s share of my time meeting people, which was absolutely fantastic, but made any real productivity that bit harder.

A couple of other people I met who probably haven’t been mentioned in an entry yet include Niklas Palm – whose design work has featured on the site from time to time, and David Blumberg – singer/songwriter of Griffin Up!

There were numerous others as well, all of whom were great to talk to.

The Spyker presentation laid out one point that I thought was quite interesting and very appropriate for Saab. The presenter stated that there are certain things that customers will always get in a Spyker. These things are non-negotiable as they’re part of the Spyker experience. Things like only leather and metal facings inside the cabin, and the exhaust note when you drive the car.

Personally, until something better comes along, I think turbocharging should be present on every Saab and certain features should be standard as well. For instance, heated seats. Why do some markets have to option-up to get something that should be a standard-bearer for a Scandinavian brand?

Cars from the Saab Festival – Part 2

July 21, 2010 in Saabology

It’s time for part 2 of my look around the car show on Day 3 of the Saab Festival. This time we move through some older cars to some newer Saabs.

Part 1 is here.

There’s no doubt that older Saabs dominate the numbers at a Saab festival, but there were some great newer Saabs there, too. Not as many 9000s on show as I’d have liked, but still some good modern Saabs were there to be seen.
