Brand vs Product

July 7, 2010 in Editorial

I just wanted to share a few observations with you about brands and products.

I have a friend in England who owns a Jaguar XFR. He’s a guy who gets right into the companies behind the cars that he buys and accordingly, he’s right into everything Jaguar at the moment (he would have had a 9-5, by the way, but no-one would give him a price for one, so that will have to come later).

Earlier today, he sent me the following via email:

In the first 6 months of the year, in the UK, the Jaguar XF outsold Audi A6 – all variants – and BMW 5 series – all variants. Whilst there are no doubt special reasons for this –model changes, etc. it does appear to show that people will buy a car off any car company, large or small, if the product is good.

The Jaguar brand started from a loftier perch than Saab, but did have to endure some products that were below customers expectations under Ford’s ownership. Of course, there’s also the age-old maxim of having to own 2 Jaguars (one to drive whilst the other is being repaired).

The point, however, is that Jaguar’s brand and reputation were preserved well enough through the years that all it needed to succeed was good product, which it now has in spades (incredibly good product, from what I hear).

Another brand reported to have excellent new product, albeit relatively new to Australia in its updated form, is Skoda. The Czech company actually dates back to the late 1800s but it’s fair to say that it’s never been an aspirational brand, not here in Australia, at least. It’d be more accurate to say they were seen as something akin to Lada, which were generally seen on the streets in running order but in what seemed to be a visible state of decay.

Now under the wing of the Volkswagen group of companies, Skoda has re-launched here in Australia and its new cars are attracting praise from just about everyone who drives them.

I read a few reviews of the Skoda Superb wagon earlier today, and you would swear black and blue that it is the God-given answer to every prayer ever prayed by a parent who didn’t want to own a minivan.

Here’s Go Auto

What we’re saying, then, is that if you have low-$40s to splash out on a big wagon, you mustn’t overlook the Superb…..

…..we reckon the surprise package is the base petrol unit, because it is unbelievably sweet and smooth and quiet. Yes, the 103TDI is all these things too – for a diesel – but the refinement meter soars meteorically in the 118TSI. An extra bonus is its lighter nose that seems to improve on the Superb’s already alert steering and agile handling characteristics.

All Superb wagons have nine airbags, ESC stability and traction control, front fog lights with a cornering action, dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, integrated roof bars, tyre pressure monitors, heated front seats, auto-on lights, rain-sensing wipers, and an umbrella socket in one of the side rear doors, as well as the usual cruise control, electric windows, remote central locking, CD/MP3 audio, tilt/reach steering wheel adjuster, driver’s seat-height raiser and a multi-function trip computer.

And this is a reasonably big car that tops out in price where the new Saab 9-5 will most likely begin.

So why am I trying to turn you all in Skoda converts? Well, I’m not, actually. My point is this….

Despite having what are reputed to be new products with great engines, well equipped, aggressively promoted and well received by the Australian motoring press, Skoda haven’t become a great sales success here in Australia.

With a six-vehicle range of family oriented vehicles spread over three different models, Skoda were still outsold in Australia last month by Mini, which practically speaking have three styles of the same thing with only two useable seats. Skoda were significantly outsold by a much more expensive and niche LandRover as well.

Skoda’s big and more expensive brother, Volkswagen, outsold it by a ratio of 26 to 1 during June.

So, whilst good product is certainly key in this market, it helps a lot if that product is associated with a good, recognisable and well regarded brand. If not, there’s a good chance that people just won’t give it a second look.

The Saab brand has been double-damaged in recent years.

First, by GM restricting it to products that the market, and the scribes, deemed to be less than acceptable. Sure they sold a bunch, but they did so thanks to large incentives that crashed the resale values of the cars.

Second, by the attempted closing of the brand and eventual sale – a saga that stopped at the ‘closing’ point for many potential consumers.

Saab’s recent efforts in advertising have been a great start and they do have a great new product to offer in the Saab 9-5 and the Saab 9-4x that’s coming. I believe there’s enough brand equity remaining to take advantage of that, but as the above stories with Jaguar and Skoda will tell you, the combination has to be just right and as we all know, Saab won’t likely have a third chance.

Old Saab print ads from Sweden

July 7, 2010 in Saabology

Our friends over at New Salem Saab in Albany, NY, have sent through some photos of some old Saab ads they’ve retrieved from the archives (I have some more great old photos from them coming up, too).

These are genuine old Saab ads, featuring the Philipsons logo from the Swedish company that placed the first orders for Saab cars (orders without which Saab probably wouldn’t have gone ahead as a car manufacturer).

They’re a tiny bit fuzzy and in Swedish, but I hope you’ll still understand and enjoy.

This first one is one of those showing the versatility of the car, with Father, Mother and Son bedding down for the night in their Saab 96.

This second one is quite topical as it features the Rally to the Midnight Sun, which will start in the middle of this month, with two cars from the Saabs United Historic Rally Team making up some of the field.

——

Thanks again to Darryl at New Salem Saab for passing them on.

Photoshopping a small Saab – Aussie style

July 7, 2010 in Saabology

It’s exciting for me as a Saab enthusiast that there is so much interest in the brand. I’ve shown a number of photoshopped efforts for new Saabs in the last 6 months and there are still more coming into my inbox.

Those drawings are typically from Europe, close to Saab itself. Interest isn’t confined to the continent, however. These drawings have come to me from a young designer named Adam Dean Smith, who lives right here in Australia.

——

I am a designer from Australia and a big Saab fan!

Recently I had a go at what I thought a Saab 91 would maybe look like. As a premium Mini or MiTo competitor, I thought the Saab 91 named “Sonic” would take cues from the popular Aexo X concept from 2006.

The package would be as a 3-door and 5-door hatch, a coupe, a convertible, a XWD versions.

The interior is inspired by fighter-jet cockpits. The driver focused design of the interior offers excitement and a real point of difference to other premium small cars. Features include HUD (heads up display), touch screen display on the steering wheel featuring fingerprint security entry, etc.

One day I’d love to work for the Saab design studio.

I hope you enjoy Adam’s work. Click to enlarge.

Saab negotiating Chinese distribution

July 6, 2010 in News

DN.se are carrying a story today, about Saab distribution in China.

The newspaper states that Saab are looking at a model where they might contract with several different distributors to handle importation and sales in different areas of the country.

Victor Muller via Googletrans:

- It is certainly not inconceivable that there will be a combination of multiple choice. China is so large and has in some ways more than one market, so it is possible that we will be working with multiple partners.

He says negotiations are under way with actors that are active throughout China. But in the end it may be that the contractual arrangements with different actors, each is particularly strong in the three metropolitan areas of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Whilst Saab already has a relationship in China with BAIC, it’s not a certainty that they’ll be part of the deal at this point.

——

I know many of you are still anxious about distribution in your country, just like we are here in Australia.

Hopefully there might be some good news coming soon. It’s my understanding that Saab does have deadlines to meet with regards to taking over distribution or having arrangements in place.

Thanks to Per for the tip!

Saab 9-5 getting Hirsch Performance upgrade

July 6, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

It’s OK to get a little excited, though not too excited (just yet).

This photo is from Flickr, and the caption reads….

Saab 9-5 getting prepared for performance upgrade homologation

So Hirsch Performance have been hard at work by the sound of things and now have the car undergoing homologation testing.

As you can see, the car looks quite plain. My understanding is that work is also underway to design and produce some of the cosmetic enhancements that Hirsch do so well.

This is great to see!

Saab Taiwan sponsor Yen-Hsun Lu (Rendy Lu)

July 6, 2010 in News

I’m so pleased to have some extra international flavour here at SU today. We have a lot of stories that come out of Europe and the US, but it’s great to see some progress and movement in Asia as well.

I’ve just heard that Saab in Taiwan are sponsoring tennis player, Yen-Hsun Lu. Who is he, I hear you ask?

Yen-Hsun Lu, also known in Taiwan as Rendy Lu, put his name up in lights a week or so ago when he triumphed in five sets over Andy Roddick in the fourth round at Wimbledon, progressing to the Quarter Finals where he eventually lost to The Joker.

Saab Taiwan will be sponsoring Lu, providing some cash in his hip pocket and use of a SAAB 93SportCombi 2.0t Linear.

Below are some photos from the sponsorship announcement and there’s also some video (I love this behind the scenes stuff).

Saab 9-5 Information Display

July 6, 2010 in Saabology

As you’ve undoubtedly heard already, the central binnacle of the Saab 9-5 dashboard houses the Saab Information Display (SID), where the driver can access a range of information about the car. I’m not sure, from memory, if the SID terminology is still being used, but it’ll do for now.

Control of the information shown comes from a rotary dial on the stalk to the left of the steering wheel.

Following are the various bits of info that can be displayed. Click to enlarge.

DI.se: Over 2,500 new Saab cars ordered

July 6, 2010 in News

It’s good to finally see some positive news coming out of the Swedish press. It won’t always be this way, so best to share it around whilst the good news is there to be heard.

A Googletrans:

Saab-boss Jan Åke Jonsson is pleased with how the new 9-5 has been recieved. “Fantastic”, he says of the reception.

Journalists worldwide have now been allowed to see and test drive the new Saab model 9-5. The car is right now being launched at local dealerships.

“50-60 percent of the dealers have been test driving it and it’s been a fantastic reception”, says Jan Åke Jonsson. As the dealers get their cars first, only a small number of customers have recived the new 9-5.

“But we have an order book for 2500-3000 cars”, says Jonsson.

Saab’s Swedish sales have fallen 24 percent this year, Overall they have sold 3,216 cars in Sweden. But Jan Åke Jonsson explains the loss in sales with the production change that took place earlier.

“If you’re looking at sales right now we only sell 9-3′s, the same period last year we sold both 9-3 and 9-5″, he says. “If you’re looking on the month of June this year, we increased sales of the 9-3 by 42%”.

Disruptions in production at the Trollhättan plant are causing Saab to not yet produce 300 cars per day, but in July the pace is going to be increased. The delays have not made Saab ease the aims of selling 50.000-60.000 cars this year.

“The production targets are set”, says Jan Åke Jonsson.

Also the goal of the loss-making company to show profit and positive cash flow in 2012 stands firm.

Tuesday Snippets – too far edition!

July 6, 2010 in Saabology

New 9-5 sighted in the parking lots of Karlskoga, some 200km from Trollhattan. Don’t know if it’s private or company, but Fredrik was very excited to see it there…..

——

Philip spotted some 9-5 advertising in Belgium today. These billboards are popping up in various places around Europe. The fun thing about this one is that’s positioned right in front of an Audi factory :-)

That plant apparently builds the new Audi A1 and is situted just outside Brussels, on a pretty busy motorway.

——

Saab sales in Australia for June 2010 – zero.

There is, of course, no real sales organisation here. GM are still doing it from an official standpoint, but unofficially things remain at a standstill pending a decision on how to bring cars into the country.

There has been one Saab sold in Australia so far this year. We have 20 million people here. It’s got to be a viable market.

——

Whilst we’re talking Australian sales, it’s interesting to see that China’s first foray into the Aussie market, Great Wall, outsold Volvo, MINI, Skoda, Citroen, Dodge, Fiat, Proton, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Ssangyong, Jaguar and Porsche, among others.

——

This guy at Mibz has been posting a whole load of Bull’s Exrement about Saab in recent times and I’d urge anyone who sees stories from that site on their RSS reader to take them with a grain of salt.

The site was promoting baloney stories about the Saab 9-4x last week, and today it’s offering up the photoshopped 9-5 CombiCoupe image by Z! as evidence that Saab will offer a 9-5 hatch.

Stay away.

——

The new Saab 9-5 is arriving for dealer events in Switzerland!

——

And finally, it appears someone has decided to translate their appreciation for Spyker into an expression on their Saab 9000.

From Sander, via Twitter.

DI.se – Spyker completes purchase of Saab

July 5, 2010 in News

UPDATE: English language stories here and here.

——

According to a story in Dagens Industri today, Spyker has completed the purchase of Saab earlier than expected.

Googletrans:

Spyker announced that it has paid $ 24,000,000, approximately SEK 183 million, to General Motors and the purchase of Saab Automobile is thus completed. Spyker took over the money two weeks before the deadline.

Payments to GM would be made by 15 July. But Spyker Cars has chosen to implement the transfer of Saab Automobile now.

Those are the essential bits. The rest of the story is here for the Swedes amongst you.

The purchase was apparently completed using funds acquired in the purchase of Saab GB. DI.se makes a bit of an issue about this.

It’s good to see it done. Onwards and upwards!

Thanks to Tobias for the tip!

July 5, 2010 in Saabology

PLEASE NOTE THIS CAR HAS BEEN SOLD

Am re-posting this as there is still a week for this to sell.

This is something different. It’s not something I’ve done before here at SU but I’m willing to give it a try seeing the car is a special edition Classic 900.

The following email comes from David Vandenborre, who’s name appears on the door of Garage Vandenborre, a Belgian Saab dealer.

There is a Dutch registry that can give you some background on the Saab 900 GT at this website.

What’s going on in England?

Saab 9-5 wheels on a Viggen……

…and then a 9-5 wagon with Viggen-like 5-spokes (Hi Robin!)

Those photos were taken at a local motor show in England, where one Saab dealer rolled out a new Saab 9-5 for show n tell…..

My one World Cup gripe:

Shamed Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez received a one-match ban on Saturday for his handball against Ghana, meaning he could still play in the World Cup final if his countrymen can see off Holland in the semi-final.

He should have been shipped home. Doing it was bad enough, gloating about it afterwards was criminal. The guy is a dog and a one game penalty just goes to show how much this game needs to be cleaned up at the official level.

It was a very sad weekend for World Cup tipping. Being the superficial soccer watcher that I am, I was cheering for both Brazil and Argentina.

I’m not sure what the Dutch win says about them, but the Germans were incredible. If they can beat Spain……

Saab raise vehicle production rate

July 5, 2010 in News

There’s some good news in from TTELA this weekend, with Saab using overtime to increase their production rate – something they’ve been wanting to do for a little while now.

The Googletrans:

——

For the third week in a row Saab are running on maximum time which means that employees are working up to 2.5 hours extra in addition to standard time a week. And on Monday they increased the production rate significantly. For the first time ever, the company produced 39 cars in an hour – eleven more [per hour] than normal.

- Historically we have only made a few increases on cars at a time,” says union chairman Hakan Skött.

Good launch

An increase in orders and the launch of the new 9-5……. is behind the rate hike. Saab has recruited the necessary staff to manage production at the high level. In total, 222 new staff in addition to replacements.

- Confidence in Saab has increased. We spin the wheels and are full of confidence,” said Hakan Skött.

The production of 39 cars per hour is basically what the company can cope with given today’s staffing. In order to produce more cars they would need to move to two shifts and hire more employees.

What they can manage

But temporarily, it would increase production by using overtime and it is already scheduled for the autumn. And Hakan Skött is fairly convinced that Saab will move to two shifts in the not too distant future.

- We can certainly reach the production target for 2010 using the projected over time, but in the longer term [more] shifts will be required to produce enough cars.

When summer’s rate rise will translate to increased sales statistics, however, is unclear.

- Since we manufacture orders the customer is always waiting. But retailers report on a keen interest in the new model, announces Skött.

Thanks to Marco and Justyn for the tip!

Saab 9-5 launch Netherlands, arrival in UK

July 4, 2010 in News

More Saab 9-5 dealer launches were held over the weekend, this time in the Netherlands.

Photo by Nic. More here. Additional photos by Stephan. More here.

These photos were taken by several Dutch Saab nuts who attended the dealership in Tilburg, where a great crowd turned out to look over the car.

I’m told the order books were closed during the launch day, but that perhaps as many as 10 orders were received in the days leading up to the launch.

Fantastic news!

Other photos from Joep via email. Thanks!

——

The Dutch aren’t the only ones getting a look at the new 9-5.

Robin M headed down to his local dealership in Yeovil, where they unloaded this new 9-5 from the trailer over the weekend.

The UK dealer launch events are commencing later this week, on July 8.
