Saab 9-5 reviews

August 26, 2010 in Saabology

These three reviews have been floating through the comments section for around 24 hours now, but I thought I’d bring them to the front page and provide a little comment.

All three offer decidedly below-average assessments of the new Saab 9-5. All three are from England and two of the three concentrate on the base model diesel.

Early reviews, even from the English press, were pretty positive. So why the change?

I wish I knew the full answer to that. Chatting with one person close to the action revealed that some companies use English roads as a type of proving ground and ensure they tune the suspension to cope properly. Perhaps Saab haven’t done this properly. Perhaps the base engined diesel acts like a base engined diesel.

Whilst I tend to think that at least two of these reviews are overly harsh, I will concede the following:

1) I didn’t get to drive a base-engined diesel during my test drives. I only drove the 2.0T petrol and the 2.8V6 petrol with XWD. I found both of these to be absolutely superb.

2) The 9-5 does need improvement in certain areas, particularly the dashboard, which we’ve discussed at length here already.

——

WhatCar review – awards the 9-5 just two stars

Maybe their rating system is meant to be comparative rather than just rating the car as it stands, but I find it confusing that the Dame Edna Saab 9-5 that this car replaces was awarded three stars whereas the new car was only awarded two. No disrespect to Dame Edna owners, but the new 9-5 is a superior car in every way. Even the basic black dash is better in terms of the actual materials used.

General Sales Saab (PA) launch Saab 9-5 this weekend.

August 26, 2010 in Saabology

Anyone near West Chester, PA, who’s not coming to Swedish Car Day in Boston this weekend ought to get down to General Sales Saab for their launch of the new Saab 9-5.

They’ve just had cars arrive in stock so they’re showing them off this weekend. They wanted to wait a week, but it’ll be Labour Day that weekend and who knows, the cars might not be there anymore!

The opening is this Saturday, August 28, from 9am to 5pm.

They’re going to have a fleet of historic Saabs on display, too, including one of the six original Sonetts and a Saab 99 from the Heritage collection, as well as a bunch of historics owned by customers.

Sounds like it’ll be a great day and well done to them for putting it on!

Press Release from Spyker Cars

August 26, 2010 in News

This looks like routine stuff, required under law due to the way the deal to buy Saab was structured.

——

SPYKER CARS REPORTS ABOUT EQUITY UNDER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
(25/08/10 19:54 CET)

Zeewolde, the Netherlands, 25 August 2010 – Spyker Cars N.V. (“Spyker Cars”), a holding company which produces and sells premium automobiles under the Saab and Spyker brands, is listed on Eurolist by NYSE Euronext Amsterdam (ticker symbol SPYKR).

NYSE Euronext has been informed by Spyker Cars N.V. that it will report negative shareholders equity as of June 30, 2010.

The company will report its H1-2010 results, which include the Saab Automobile AB (“Saab”) acquisition for the first time, on Friday August 27, 2010.

The negative equity position of Spyker Cars N.V. as of June 30, 2010 reflects the IFRS requirement to treat the $326 million of redeemable preference shares issued to General Motors as part of the Saab acquisition in February of 2010 as liabilities instead of equity. From a Swedish Gaap and law perspective these shares qualify as equity and accordingly management also considers these shares to be part of the Group’s capital, which still has a positive balance. More details will be disclosed in the half year report on Friday.

Spyker Cars N.V. management has been in contact with NYSE Euronext and is committed to comply with Euronext Amsterdam notice 2010-001 under section 3.
NYSE Euronext Amsterdam has agreed not to impose listing measures for as long as the Euronext Amsterdam notice 2010-001 under section 3 has been complied with.

Connecticut convoy for Swedish Car Day

August 26, 2010 in News

UPDATE – New Hampshire/ Maine convoy added as well! See below.

——

A question was asked the other day about convoys heading to Swedish Car Day in Boston from Connecticut.

There IS a convoy arranged and there’s even a Facebook page for it.

Let’s try to meet off Exit 68 from I-84 in Tolland, CT at 7am. We’re leaving at 7:10 SHARP. Parking on the lawn at SCD is between 8 and 10am so it would probably be best to get there (to SCD) around 9am. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I’d say look for the Saabs at that exit and you’ll be amongst the right people….. Or look for the police cars – apparently they’re meeting at Dunkin Donuts :-)

See you there!

——

New Hampshire and Maine – let ‘em know you’re coming at the Facebook page

For those trekking southbound to SCD from Maine or from the Seacoast of NH, we are assembling at the I-95 “Safety Rest Area” Liquor Store just south of the Hampton Toll barrier for a 7:30am SHARP departure

Ny Teknik speak to JAJ – Saab 9-4x to move to Phoenix platform in the future

August 25, 2010 in News, Saabology

Ny Teknik has done a brief interview with Jan-Ake Jonsson where they cover a range of topics, including the platform Saab are developing, called Phoenix.

This platform is a development of the current Epsilon platform that the Saab 9-3 is currently built on. Saab are completely re-working this architecture and as you’ll see in this translation, Saab intend for it to underpin not only the next generation of the 9-3, but also the next 9-5 and 9-4x.

——

We build all cars on the same platform

Production of the Saab 9-4X will be moved from Mexico to Trollhättan Saab in the future when all models are based on the same technical platform. It reveals Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab Automobile, in an exclusive interview.

* What is the benefit of no longer part of General Motors?

- You can determine and prioritize. We choose what is best for Saab. We control over what cars we should have and when we change the model. We decide what technology and what we should be partners.

* Were there any advantages to being part of GM?

- GM has built an incredible infrastructure of production and the development side that is now ours. Production, crash laboratory, climatic wind tunnel and the tunnel.

* Is not a bit of a problem?

- I see it as a strength. We can quickly make decisions. Victor (Muller) and I can take big decisions in minutes.

* Do you buy the very latest technology of large contractors or other automakers?

- If you really want to keep track of how new technologies are received and how it is installed in a new car, so a small manufacturer is often more interesting. If you look at the forms of cooperation exist, it has been in the IT side with greater transparency and more standard components.

* You have recently started selling new 9-5, the forecast looks like?

- We expect 40000-45000 cars in the average annual rate, including the wagon.

- The next generation 9-3 think we should be on 70 000 on average. On top of that, we have new 9-4X, which we believe should be between 13 000 and 15 000 inhabitants.

* Are you around on the numbers?

- Yes. We can size the tools, machinery and personnel for the operation. We have a break-even point of about 85 000 cars in all new cars are on site. Then you have a good profitability by 120? 000 cars per year.

- Our challenge is to get a smaller car that pull in younger buyers, singles or young couples.

* How will you get advice on developing their new models?

- We develop today’s 9-3 architecture to a new and modern architecture. From the architecture we are developing the next generation 9-5 and 9-4X.

- New 9-3 architecture has more flexibility for the size of the car. This review will provide synergy with low investment costs.

* And you can pick the next home production 9-4X to Trollhättan?

- Absolutely!

* Spyker is financially weak owners. Is there someone in the wings who can contribute funds?

- Tell them that we really want to do a Saab 9-2, then we must have capital for this. And then we must consider how to obtain the capital. Is it good for us, I think there are many who want to invest in Saab.

* Spyker have shown significant losses and has taken loans at high interest rates. What does that Saab’s cash is used to save the Spyker?

- Everything in the Saab is in a huge wall. There is no way to move money from Saab to Spyker. Debt Office receives a monthly report and the European Investment Bank on a quarterly basis, we go through each project. And so we have a contractual relationship with GM.

* Where will Saab be in ten years?

- We remain an independent company with a strong brand. Stable and profitable.

* How many cars will you sell?

- We are around 150 000 per year.

Saab Cabriolet Challenge – Done!

August 25, 2010 in Saabology

With all the events and travel I’ve done in the last few months, one of the events I didn’t get to publicise much was the Saab Cabriolet Challenge, in Sweden last weekend.

For those of you who are convertible afficionados, there are a whole bunch of sensational photos over at the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden website. It looks like it was a sensational weekend – convertible heaven and I just love driving the Swedish countryside.

I believe the photos were taken by Mioh – well done!!!!

Any of you Swedes who feel like jumping on board next year ought to bookmark the Cabriolet Challenge website. The event seems to be growing every year.

Thanks to Jörgen for the tip!

Wednesday Snippets – FOUR!

August 25, 2010 in Saabology

Posting will be lighter for the next few days due to travelling, but there are some crackers coming up, including a family of Saabs that will keep a smile on your face the whole weekend!

——

The Woodward Dream Cruise was on last weekend and Saab Cars North America took up sponsorship of Autoline After Hours, who were broadcasting live from the event.

In case you missed it, Mike Colleran and John McElroy give the new Saab 9-5 a good once-over at the 60 minute mark of the Part 2 video at this link.

——

Which club to pick?

Full story here.

——

Speaking of Saab related incidents, there was a great article in the San Francisco Chronicle late last week about a guy who’s just bought another Saab convertible after the last one saved his life.

It was a glorious late October day. The top was down, and my girlfriend Trudy and I were looking forward to a romantic weekend, but a split second later it was all over when a blue Prius came straight at us. There was only time to turn right slightly, which was just enough to avoid a direct head-on wreck. Bibi was smote mightily, and we were sent over the shoulder and down a ravine where we did a complete roll landing….

….Bibi gave her life to save us. The sturdy structure, and the twin roll bars behind the rear seats deployed as advertised, as did the seat belt tensioners. Aside from a nasty bruise from the seat belt, Trudy was physically unharmed. As the impact was on my side, the side airbag also deployed correctly, which cracked four of my ribs. Somewhat painful, but not life-threatening.

You can read the full story here.

Of course, I’m impressed by the car doing what it was designed to do and take an impact. But I think I’m even more impressed with this 71 year-old guy going for a romantic weekend away with his girlfriend! Life is there to be lived!

Hi, I’d like to join the SAAB convoy on Sunday from CT up to Brookline, MA. I live in Marlborough, CT and plan to drive my ’86 SPG that day. Can you share details of when and where.

If someone can send me details of convoys heading to Boston for Swedish Car Day this weekend, I’ll gladly post them on site when I can.

Postscript to the TIME ad article

August 25, 2010 in Saabology

The article I posted yesterday on a Saab ad published in TIME Magazine certainly seems to have generated some good discussion. Most commenters seem to agree with my sentiments but there were a few who defended the ad and were willing to offer up theories as to why it might have been run.

I don’t want to start a whole new discussion on the same topic, but there was another ad that was similar in that it just made me (and others) scratch their heads. It appeared in Autoweek and was entitled “She is not for you”.

You can see that ad here.

——

To the defenders of the ad: I can see the position that many of you are offering here and I respect the professional credentials that some of you hold. I understand that any ad will reach some readers. This ad will make some people think, and then read it again, even if only to make sense of it.

But the way I see it, that’s the problem.

If you read it a few times and your main thought is WTF? then one has to ask whether or not it’s doing a job effectively. Remember, this is a print ad, so people can’t click on a link to get more information, they need to get their information from the ad itself or have their curiosity piqued to such a degree that they feel compelled to look for more.

Personally, I didn’t find the ad compelling (not in a positive way, at least).

——

I’m not completely sure of the backstory to these ads, but there are theories around that at least one of them was placed early and attempts to axe it were too late.

——

This is quite possibly my own personal hobby horse coming into play here, but I think Saab could have used the story of their survival and sale to much greater effect. The convoys, the way people all around the world fought for this company – it’s all there and ready to be told and it does make for a great underdog story.

More than that, it’s a direct answer to a question that a LOT of dealers still get asked: Saab are still alive? What happened?

Fold that story into the fantastic story of a brand new Saab 9-5 and I think there’s plenty of ground to be made.

Saab Club North America new car purchase incentive

August 25, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve mentioned this once before, but just wanted to give it some more airtime and a post of its own to make sure that everyone was aware of it.

This was announced by Victor Muller at the Saab Owners Convention last month, but some who didn’t attend may not yet be aware of it.

From the Saab Club North America website:

We hope you all had a great time at the Saab Club of North America’s 2010 Owners’ Convention. If you were at Saturday’s dinner, one of the many things you learned is that Saab Cars of North America is extending a $500 incentive to Club members in good standing on the purchase of a new Saab.

You can read the full details on the club website, but make sure to also check the latest offers on the Saab website as the loyalty bonus available there changes from time to time. This offer can be used in addition to Saab’s regular loyalty bonus.

As mentioned in the quote, you need to be a Saab Club of North America member to take advantage of this offer.

Head over to the Club website to download a certificate that you can present to your dealer to claim the offer.

Tuesday Night Snippets – Saab corporate edition

August 25, 2010 in Saabology

Saab are kicking some serious goals again in terms of lease sales in the Swedish market. Their guaranteed residuals have been a big hit with the market there, and e24.se are reporting that lease sales are up, with Saab now only trailing Volvo, Volkswagen and Audi in this segment of the Swedish market.

There have been 1,464 sales for Saab in this segment frmo May-July, which is a 44% rise over the same period last year.

——

We heard some news about Saab seeking distribution in Latin American markets a few weeks ago. That story focused mainly on Brasil and Argentina. I’ve received some advance word via Djup Strupe today that Saab are also inviting interest for distribution in Mexico.

Saab Automobile is seeking to appoint an importer to supply the Mexican market as it continues to move forward as an independent car manufacturer.

There’s no link for this story yet, but it should be out online early next week.

With the newly-launched Saab 9-5 sedan spearheading the biggest new product offensive in the company’s history – including the imminent arrival of the Saab 9-4X crossover and 9-5 wagon – the Swedish premium carmaker is now inviting applications for a business partner to represent the brand in Mexico.

The role includes the importation and distribution of Saab cars and parts, the establishment of a national retail network and marketing support…..

….As a first step in the recruitment process, Saab has engaged the services of the consultancy firm API LLC, based in the United States, who will begin evaluating potential candidates for an exclusive Saab distribution contract.

——

I love this sort of stuff. And it doesn’t surprise me one bit as to who’s doing it…..

Saab Belgium will be entering two vehicles in the 12 Heures de Huy rally, on September 4. They’ll be entering a Saab Sonett III as well as a Saab 96 Monte Carlo.

Like many of these European events, its a historical ‘race’ based on a real race that used to be run in the mid 1900′s. The original Douze heures de Huy ran for around 15 years. A driver death in the mid 1960s saw interest decrease and the original race had its last running in 1969.

There are two categories in the event – Revival and Equipage. Revival sees the driver go solo, acting as both driver and navigator. Equipage sees the two roles played by two people. Cars can be manufactured from 1969 to 1974, but cars later than 1969 have to be of the same basic specification as the version manufactured in 1969.

Saab Belgium are one of the principal sponsors of the event and here’s a pic of (the nose of) the 96 they’ll be running.

Cheers to @SofiefromSaab, who you should all be following on Twitter, because she’s freaking brilliant!

——

Here’s another thing Saab have been doing behind the scenes….

The Trollhattan plant uses a computerised maintenance system to monitor operations and plan scheduled maintenance in order to keep everything working properly.

Saab have just completed a changeover of the entire system from a US based system installed by General Motors, to a new system built by a Swedish company called Aretics. The installation involved some 36,000 connections around the plant and was completed in a record three months.

The system is expected to handle around 90,000 scheduled maintenance tasks in 2011 and has already proven reliable handling around 200 tasks per day in the boot-up phase.

Thanks to Johan O for several of these tips!

Those expectations for the Paris Motor Show?

I have a feeling they need to be revised. More to come.

Washing and cleaning a Saab

August 24, 2010 in Saabology

Much like the question about Turbo X tyres a few days ago – and I should add that Colin has purchased some new rubber and saved a bunch of money, too – I received a question about car cleaning.

This comes from Brian W:

I recently purchased a 2009 9-3 from Saab of Milford in Conn. USA. I was just wandering if you have ever posted a segment asking your blog followers what cleaning products they use on their Saabs. For the first time in a long time, I have the desire to clean my own car (because I love the car) and have been using “Mothers” products for the past 2 months.

I would love to see what products your loyal blog followers use on the exterior, interior, and tires.

I have to confess that I’m a total goose when it comes to this stuff. I’ve had the same bottle of Meguiars carwash for a number of years and I use their polishes as well, but not very often.

I’m not the guy to speak to when it comes to this sort of stuff. But I know that some of you are. I’ve published enough Saab O The Week photo over five years to know that we have some very accomplished detailers here.

So, what say ye?

More test drive impressions of the Saab 9-5

August 24, 2010 in Saabology

Meg H is (I believe) part of the New York Saab Owners Club and was one of the people who helped out with the Saab Support Convoy there.

Meg recently took a drive in the new Saab 9-5 and was kind enough to send in her impressions to share here.

——

First impressions: Much larger in person, very sleek lines, clean and does look like it’s in motion due to the chrome on the lower door edge leading up on the outer edge of the back door to the C pillar. Very roomy front and back seats with a large trunk.

Second impression: There’s a lot of chrome on the front grille, lower fog area and a strange vent on the front lower panel of the fender in front of the door. Not sure of its function and if it makes a difference in airflow to the passenger cabin.

The American version in the light panels verses the European has strips of blue in the trunk area of the brake lights, front lights and turn signal areas which actually light up orange.

Third Impression: Car looks like a Saab with still a lot of GM influences which make sense since it was developed under the GM reign.

Beautiful black metallic paint with a black interior, Comfy seats with a lower thigh extension cushion, head rests were not so comfortable for one at short as I am.

We did talk about a test drive but it didn’t happen at that point. Went home and took the 93 turbo vert for a spin, ended up back at the dealer to see what floor traffic was like and to look at the 9-5 again. This time I took it out for a good 13 miles.

The car has lots of power, is very smooth, quiet and crisp through the turns and very comfortable to drive. Has a very interesting heads up display with a compass in the middle of the speedometer which has a digital vertical speedometer I found repetitive. At 70mph it kept on displaying that I was exceeding the speed that was programmed (not sure if the onboard settings were set to go off and warn you at that speed) and found this to be a little annoying. The 9-5 has understated luxury, like most Saabs, and portrays Saab’s Heritage on what they were built on: Performance and handling.

The window label was not displayed on the car but it was estimated to come in at around 50k. I would be interested to see how the FWD 4cy will handle compared to the Aero XWD.

I loved the black color, but feel that for better visibility and for it to stand out among it’s competitors, Saab needs to allocate colors that will stand out more on the road for those who will notice something new driving by them. Every other BMW, Audi and MB on the road was black during my test drive. The car needs to stand out and say “HEY LOOK AT ME!!!! I’m different from the rest and get people curious as to what it is.”

Saab GB appoints Jackie Allard as new PR Manager

August 24, 2010 in News

I haven’t seen it on Saab’s media site, but then that is a little behind the times occasionally.

This was reported by Autochannel:

CRANFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM – Aug 23, 2010: Saab GB Ltd is pleased to announce the appointment of Jackie Allard as the new PR Manager with immediate effect.

Jackie brings with her a wealth of motor industry experience and joins Saab GB Ltd after nine years at Chrysler UK Ltd. Reporting to Marketing and PR Director, David Pugh, Jackie will be responsible for all day to day PR activity including fleet loans.

Following the successful sale of Saab Automobile to Spyker Cars in May, the launch of the all-new 9-5 saloon in July and the relocation of Saab GB to a new head office in August, things are certainly moving fast for the newly independent company. With a new product range in the pipeline, the next couple of years are going to be a very exciting time for Saab, the dealer network and most importantly for customers.

Welcome aboard, Jackie.

Your first task is to find out what the people at What Car were thinking when they rated the new Saab 9-5 as being worse than the old one (more on that later).

Now stop reading this and get back to work!
