Teeing off on TIME ad

August 24, 2010 in Editorial

Sorry. The picture looks great, but eventually people are going to read the text, too.

—-

People in the US are now reporting Saab ad sightings all over the place, which is good to hear. Personally, though, I’d like to take issue with the text of this ad, which was scanned from Time Magazine by Justin B. (Thanks!)

Full ad first, followed by text only, below. Click.

Maybe it’s just me. It probably is, actually. But I find that text to be half full of vague one-liners that do very little of what an ad is supposed to do – tell us about the car!!

What the heck does “boldly unexpected” mean??? Was that thought up by some aspiring MadMan who liked the idea of “unexpected” but figured it wasn’t quite enough? Is there anything in the world that’s ever been “boldly unexpected”?

And as for the “when different is your dance partner” and “you already knew that” stuff. It’s smug, uninformative BS that says nothing about the car or the customer who might buy it. I felt embarassed reading it.

I’d advise Saab’s ad people to check the company’s demographics. Saab’s customers are educated. They know the meaning of words, they enjoy the features that make their cars different and crucially, thanks to GM – and especially for the former customers that Saab are trying to win back – they have very sensitive BS detectors.

Again, I’m feeling a little sorry about having to write this, but this is such an important time for Saab and you can’t let people put out drivel without at least making them think about it.

Please – show your potential customers some respect.

Swedish Car Day – Remember to register

August 24, 2010 in Saabology

Re-posted

We’re only days away from Swedish Car Day 2010, in Boston.

I’m flying over for the event. Eggs is flying up from Tennessee and there’s going to be a whole bunch of Saab nuts from the north-east around as well. A quick check of the SCD Facebook page tells me that they’ve just had a registration from as far away as Texas as well! That’s a long drive, but it’ll be great to see a Saab from the Lone Star State there, too.

Fine cars, fine people and a fine time!

Aside from the camaraderie of meeting your fellow Saab enthusiasts, the big drawcard of Swedish Car Day is the car show itself. Set on the beautiful grounds of the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, Massachusetts, there will be a great collection of Swedish metal there for you to see.

But why just come and look? Bring your car along to be part of the show!

To do that, the SCD organisers from Charles River Saab need you to register your car for the event. It helps them to plan the space they’ll need, as well as the number of people who’ll be attending.

Once registered, you can be part of something like this….(click)

——

One of the cars you’ll see is this 9-3 Aero, with a little work done by BSR and Maptun to make it a little more lively. A beautiful example of another Saab ‘sleeper’.

It’s owned by a guy named Max T and he’s going to be there at Swedish Car Day next weekend. I hope you can be there, too!

An update from the Bonneville Salt Flats

August 24, 2010 in Saabology

I just received this update from Bertil, the guy who was going for a class record at Speed Week, at Bonneville salt flats last week. I featured Bertil’s car just a few days before he was due to head out to Bonneville.

——

Hello friends!

This weekend I returned home from the Bonneville Salt Flats…1500 miles each way! Late last Tuesday, after finally satisfying the tech inspectors (who were all very curious about this unusual car) we were able to make a few runs. We were not able to reach the speed needed to break the record.

Wednesday, I took apart the engine, and determined we had mechanical problems I could not repair at the Flats, so we decided to head home.

This adventure is so totally new and there is a lot to learn! The conditions at the Flats are unlike anything we can replicate in the dyno….the altitude and the lack of humidity for starters!

It made me feel a bit better when several Salt Flats veterans said it is “unheard of” to break a record on the first visit. Nobody does it in less than 3, and 3 to 7 is more the average. So I am starting preparation for next year. Now the goal is to be the first guy to break the record in two attempts!

Thanks for all your interest. I am not discouraged; I have a new game plan, so here we go!

Bertil

——

My thanks to Bertil for the update. I think it’s absolutely fantastic when Saabs are involved in this type of stuff. The commitment from guys like this is part of the fabric of what we call the Saab Spirit.

Saabs Ads in US this week – and more 9-5 arrivals

August 24, 2010 in Saabology

A user over at Saabnet has written up some information about the US advertising schedule for Saab, which will start in earnest from today.

The campaign will start this Monday with TV commercials on cable channels BBC America, Food network, HGTV, Comedy Central, Discovery, History Channel, CNN, and a few others. There will also be some large print ads in the NY Times and Wall Street Journal. And most of the car magazines will have ads next month.

It makes sense for the blitz to start now as a shipload of them were unloaded in New Jersey last week and deliveries to dealerships have started.

Here’s one that arrived at Ardmore Saab, PA.

And as an added bonus, here’s one being delivered at Charles River Saab late last week. People coming to Swedish Car Day will quite likely see this one on the weekend.

Thanks to Max T for the video!……and to Steve F for the Saabnet tip.

Saab at SAIL Amsterdam

August 23, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s a promotion I had no idea about….

SAIL Amsterdam is a festival held once every five years. Old boats come from all around the world to participate. According to the Wiki history of the event, there were around 8,000 boats at the festival back in 2000.

It’s obviously a big part of Amsterdam’s events calendar, so it’s good to hear that Saab chose to get some exposure there.

‘MillerMan’ popped along to SAIL Amsterdam and discovered that Saab had a display there, amongst the business area of the festival. They were to later take a few cars out near the water’s edge, but M-Man had headed off home by then.

Considering prices of boats and the kind of people who are interested in them, it seemed like a good place to display the Saab for potential customers.

Click to enlarge…. we have a couple of photos of the display and a few of the cars that were parked out the back.

MillerMan reports there were also a couple of Saab 9-5s out in the public parking area, too, which is very good to see.

Saab at Brands Hatch

August 23, 2010 in Saabology

Via email today from Jan B.

——

Hi Steven,

Thought I’d send a few pictures from my (family’s) day at Brands Hatch earlier today. My sincere thanks to Saab City for the free tickets and to SaabsUnited for posting links to it.

Some good racing action with several classes of Caterham cars as well as Alfa-Romeos, Ford Fiestas and Formula Ford single seater cars. Safety and Course Cars were both new 9-5s. Plenty of action and good racing was to be had. Mainly from the Caterhams. A bit of rain only served to spice up the racing a bit more.

Naturally I was also very keen to see the Saab City display with the new 9-5 taking centre stage amongst the other new models as well as a good selection of used cars.

As everybody who has seen the new 9-5 has said, photos do not do it justice. It looks simply amazing and, very importantly, it looks like a Saab. Fantastic! There happened to be a Vauxhall Insignia (the 9-5′s cousin) parked nearby and looking at that made you realise how different they look with the Insignia looking like the designers simply said ‘that will do’ and stopping, while the Saab designers carried on refining the details until the whole car looked ‘finished’.

The phrase ‘that will do’ clearly has no meaning at Saab. The interior space is very good and even with my 2m (6ft 7in) frame I had plenty of room in the driver’s seat. The instrument panel is really striking and looks very usable. I then sat in the back with the front seat still set for me and I had a fair amount of room for my legs. With a ‘normal’ sized driver I’d have loads of room in the back too. No problem whatsoever with head room in the front or back. The boot is huge, but I can’t wait for the estate version as that’s what I’d go for myself.

The salesman I spoke to said that they had had good interest in the new 9-5 and quite a lot of that was from non-Saab customers (mainly from Audi drivers). That’s what we need. The same salesman, while out driving the new 9-5, had an Audi pull up by his side, the driver having a good look at the Saab as if trying to work out what it was, before smiling and giving a big thumbs up. I can only echo that thumbs up having now seen it ‘in the flesh’ for the first time.

Overall, a very good day was had by the whole family (who were all very impressed by the 9-5).

Regards,
Jan

A little milestone

August 23, 2010 in Saabology

You have to note these things occasionally.

Trollhattansaab.net took 4 years to rack up 50,000 comments. Saabs United has provided just over 18 months of service and earlier today, we racked up comment number 80,000.

Of course, a big part of that was the sale of Saab earlier this year, but there’s still been a steady stream of visitors and participation since then.

Thanks all for making SU a great, fun place to be.

Spyker Squadron finish 9th at 1000KM race in Hungary

August 23, 2010 in sponsors

Spyker Squadron competed in the 1000km of Hungoraring, in Hungary, over the weekend. This was the fourth round of the Le Mans Series season.

The team had a good qualifying session and started from 11th on the grid and managed to climb a couple of places during the race to finish 9th in the GT2 field.

Both Tom and Peter drove a very consistent race but it soon became clear that the narrow and twisty Hungaroring track did not really suit the Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R and it would almost be impossible to get a top result without other teams hitting trouble. Both Spyker Squadron drivers gave everything but none of the other teams got into serious trouble and after six hours Tom crossed the finish line ninth in class.

The team will now return to Zeewolde where they will prepare the number 85 car for the final round of the Le Mans Series season at Silverstone. The Autosport 1000 KM of Silverstone will be held on September 12th and unlike the last two races it will be a race on Sunday afternoon.

The full race report is available here.

Following are a couple of videos from the race. This is absolutely superb stuff.

Congratulations to Spyker Squadron on another solid effort and here’s to a grand finish to the series at Silverstone next month!

And some in-car video. It’s great to get a guided lap around the circuit and what’s really fascinating is being able to see just how hard these drivers work where they’re inside the car.

Saab Turbo X tyres

August 22, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s a query for the rare few who managed to pick up a Turbo X.

It comes from Colin C, a Turbo X owner from Townsville, in northern Queensland, right here in Australia.

I need to get some replacements and would like to know what other X owners may have done, what tires they bought, if in fact they have needed to replace them already.

The local prices are nuts so I will possibly buy from overseas and bring them in. Even just doing this could save me around $800.00.

I love the X but I do need to check myself sometimes, especially when highway driving and passing multiple ‘Mexicans’ with caravans and RVs who seem to love doing 80kph in the 100 zone.

The car has done around 42,000 kms now and the tires should be good for maybe 2k more at the most. I have the 19″ rims with the PZero Nero Tires.

If there’s anyone with a suitable recommendation, please feel free to enlighten us all in comments.

LIVE from the Maptun 10th birthday celebrations

August 21, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

It looks like a rainy day in Örebro, but that doesn’t seem to have dampened the enthusiasm of a crowd of Saab owners as they descend on Maptun’s HQ to celebrate their 10th birthday.

Jörgen Trued from the Saabs United Historic Rally Team is there and he’s sent along a bunch of photos via email.

Click. (Now with added bonus of Jörgen’s 9-3 at the end….. for Smithy)

Another man’s opinion on the new Saab 9-5

August 21, 2010 in Saabology

The good thing about Saab 9-5s being distributed around dealerships in the US is that a lot of people are seeing the car for the first time. I’ve been saying for a long time that you really need to see the 9-5 for yourself – the pictures just don’t quite do it justice.

The first 9-5 in Chicago arrived today and Dan P went down to have a look, take some photos and send through his impressions.

My thanks to Dan for sending these through.

——

I specifically went out of my way to see it after work today. I was very excited to finally see one and wanted to share my experience from today…

Observations:

1. Looks twice as good in person than in photos.

2. Although definitely larger, it still has that taught, athletic Saab presence. Not fat or boat-like.

3. The plastic interior we’re stuck with temporarily due to supplier issues isn’t the usual hard brittle GM affair. It’s definitely a soft, premium plastic.

4. The blue-green headlights and taillights are much bolder and more striking in person. Pictures aren’t capturing them well.

5. Dealer said I couldn’t drive, it wasn’t their property but a Saab-owned demo model making rounds. There were no window stickers or inventory tags.

6. Boo no twirly-magic cupholders :(

7. Gauge cluster is stunningly gorgeous.

8. Looks like it’s moving fast even when parked.

Attached are some pictures I took. It was a gloomy day in Chicagoland.

Friday Night Snippets – US loyalty discount edition

August 21, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve received word from one dealer in the US about this boost to the loyalty dicount available to previous Saab owners…..

Saab announced an enhancement to the loyalty program today. P

Previously, it was $1,000 off a 9-3 if you (or someone in your household) owned or leased a 1999 or newer Saab currently. Then it was bumped up to $2,000 off a 9-3.

Now it’s $2,000 off a 9-3 purchase or lease if you or someone in your household HAS EVER owned or leased a 1995 (yes, 1995) or newer Saab and can prove it with a registration car, payment coupon, or purchase or lease contract.

I hope some folks saved their paperwork obsessively, because this is huge for the traditional once-every-ten-years-plus customers!

Check it out at Saabusa.com’s Current Offers section, then see your local dealer and make sure you get it, too.

——

Some people questioned why Saab aren’t getting into BioGas yesterday, after Jan-Ake Jonsson’s chat with Ny Teknik. If Saab aren’t prepared for it, and it sounds like they aren’t, then there’s no point going into it with a subpar system.

I don’t exactly what the nature of the problem is (and I’m not hinting it’s BioGas related in any way, just that there’s an issue), but Volvo are having to halt production of so-called ‘green’ V70s because they don’t actually meet the green requirements to receive the concessions they’re supposed to get in Sweden.

Thanks Tompa!

Spyker Squadron are back racing this weekend – in Hungary:

Spyker Squadron will venture into unknown territories this weekend as it takes part in the fourth round of the 2010 Le Mans Series season. The team has travelled to Budapest for the 1000 KM race on the Hungaroring Formula 1 circuit.

Stay tuned to @spykersquadron for updates via twitter.

Good luck, guys!

To paraphrase John Cleese – I may not know much about design, but I know what I like!

And I like it when Sniff Petrol parody designers :-)

——

Sometimes you love something, but you don’t see it for a while. And when you see it again it gives you goosebumps and you feel that feeling all over again.

I hadn’t seen one of these for a while, but when I saw this today I just – well – looked at it for a while.

Maptun birthday special offer

August 20, 2010 in sponsors

Maptun are having their open house, 10th birthday celebrations tomorrow.

We invite you to a party in Örebro with car show, activities and lots of fun. Of course, we will have great deals throughout the day.

The anniversary party will be on 21st of August from 10:00-15:00

I can now pass on the good news about a special offer the Maptun guys are making to celebrate the occasion. If you can make it to Örebro tomorrow, you can pick up one of their fantastic Stage 1 Maptuner devices at around 30% off.

A Stage 1 Maptuner normally sells for SEK 7,995. Tomorrow only, they’ll be on sale for SEK 5,595. That’s a 2,400 crown discount on the normal price.

NOTE: This special price is only for people attending the Maptun anniversary in person. It’s not available as an international order whether by phone or via the website. It’ll only be sold at that price to visitors at the Maptun facility.

——

The stage 1 Maptuner is a simple way to boost the performance of your Saab with a tune specially written for your particular model. The software installs in just minutes and when it’s done, you’ll feel like you’re in a different car.

See the video below for a demo of how easy it is….

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo2AKMlkULg

Thanks to Gunnar for the tip and the Fredrik’s for being dudes!
