TIME Magazine covers Victor Muller and Saab

August 20, 2010 in Saabology

The headline says it all, I think.

If there was ever a good way to get the word out that Saab ain’t dead, it’s TIME Magazine.

For all practical purposes, the Saab brand was as dead as a Studebaker last January. Abandoned by its owner, General Motors, Saab was pushed into liquidation as GM struggled to save itself. Saab’s factory in Sweden was shuttered tight. It couldn’t advertise, its dealers were out of cars, and its fans were reduced to writing plaintive notes to GM’s management. GM was prepared to let Saab die during a long winter night in the high latitudes.

And so begins a story that we’re all pretty familiar with. Indeed, for anyone who’s spent more than a few hours here in the last 9 months, this story won’t have anything new in it.

But it’s great to see the Saab story out there. The tale of Saab’s heritage, struggle and ultimate survival is a great story and the telling of it is a great way to advertise that the company’s still around.

Saab GB kick off Saab advertising campaign

August 20, 2010 in Saabology

It seems things are just starting to move out the door from the ad agencies handling work from Saab GB.

A few print ads are starting to show up, which will be used to tie in with the Anything but Ordinary TV spots that should be showing up.

Click.

From Motor Torque:

Saab explains the campaign thus:

  • So Swedish – Positions Saab as leaders in style and design, environmental issues and safety concerns
  • So Powerful – Reinforces Saab’s pioneering use of turbocharged engines to combine both power and economy
  • So Aerodynamic – Emphasises Saab’s aircraft heritage and aerodynamic expertise to increase performance and reduce fuel consumption

A series of TV, print, digital, outdoor and cinema coverage will follow, including a new 40-second TV ad sloganed: ‘So Saab – The all new 9-5, Anything but ordinary’.

August 20, 2010 in Saabology

Saab 9-5s arrive in the US

August 20, 2010 in News

I know a couple trickled in last week, but this week, 365 new Saabs arrived on the docks in New Jersey and the good news is that they’ve started being distributed around to dealerships.

Charles River Saab in Boston (host of the Swedish Car Day that I’ll be attending there next week) received their first cars today.

Photos from Facebook:

Cameras at the ready…….Do you think the staff are excited? :-)

——

I also got some photos through from Chris Lee at International Motors, in Falls Church, VA. They’ve received some cars today as well.

——

I can also pass on a note about this one arriving at JMK Saab. It’s already spoken for, though, with the buyer being the first guy in the US to own both a Spyker and a new Saab 9-5 :-)

Congratulations!!!

——

It’s great to see these cars arriving and what’s more, it’s great that people are so jazzed about it that they send in photos and links about the arrivals as well.

Small steps, but important ones.

The next job is yours – go see these new Saabs, and test drive them. And if you’re in the market, the most important thing you can do is go grab one.

Jan-Ake Jonsson in Swedish chat session(s)

August 20, 2010 in News, Saabology

Following is a Googletrans from NyTeknik. Jan-Ake Jonsson did a chat session with readers on the website, on Thursday.

There’s not a lot of clarity here, which is in part due to the translation and in part due to readers asking some good questions that Jan-Ake didn’t want to answer :-) (not yet, at least).

The concrete take-aways from this:

  • News announcements coming in Autumn (*cough* Paris *cough*)
  • Saab 9-4x will sell in Europe
  • There are no plans for engine production
  • There are no near term plans for a return to motorsport
  • The BMW question drew a ‘no comment’ rather than a denial
  • They’re exploring possibilities for customer delivery at the factory in Trollhattan

Thanks to Dippen, Tom E and others for the heads up.

I note in comments that there was another chat at affärsvärlden, where the following were discussed:

  • 4500 orders for the new 9-5,
  • 119 gram diesel for the 9-3 coming soon,
  • new cooperations and partners will be communicated this fall,
  • new 9-3 is developing and looking good,
  • possible 9-2 is “in early definition phase”.

Thanks to Henrik for the notes in comments.

Here’s the Googletrans of the Ny Teknik chat session:

Jan Åke Jonsson respond directly to questions from New Technology readers today, Thursday.

2:03 Now I am ready and looking forward to your questions. / Jan Åke

2:03 [Comment by Carl:]

Have test driven the new 9-5, it is only to be congratulated for a nice car! Tom. I drove to Volvo since 1975, is seriously considering to buy Saab, a diesel of 150 hp in combination with the automatic transmission is an ideal combination. Good if your car is fuel efficient, it increases customer interest. You are working on it?

2:04 Glad you like 9-5. We offer many options such as fuel-efficient diesel variants majority as well as small turbocharged gasoline variants. Of course, we have also E85.

Swedish Car Day 2010 – update

August 20, 2010 in Saabology

Swedish Car Day – hosted by the Village Auto Group, including Charles River Saab – is only just over a week away.

Date: 28-29 August 2010

Venue: Larz Anderson Auto Museum, 15 Newton St Brookline, MA

——

SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS

The organisers would love it if you could register your attendance at the show, so they’ve got a better idea of the numbers they’re dealing with.

The first 100 people to register get a complimentary stainless steel SCD-XI water bottle (pictured) and there are a few of these left, so please get your registration in soon.

Please sign up to the Facebook page for the event so that you can keep up to date that way, too.

On Saturday, August 28 – after the driving event (see below) but a day before the formalities on the Sunday – there’s going to be a casual reception at Charles River Saab. We’re going to be firing up the grill, shooting the breeze and having a laugh. It runs between 5pm and 7pm so please come on down and say G’day.

——

A week from now I’ll be in the air and on my way. I can’t wait to get to Boston – one of Saab’s oldest and biggest markets in the United States.

I’m also very excited about the chance to meet a bunch of people who visit here every day. Communicating on the front page is one thing, email is another, but there’s nothing quite like meeting people in person.

Most exciting for me, of course, is the chance to finally meet Eggs n Grits personally. He’s flying in from Tennessee. Tedjs is coming in from Ohio, too. And I know there’s a bunch of others coming in from interstate as well. It’s going to be a blast.

The full blurb from Pierre at Charles River Saab is below……….

Q&A with Manfred Lenherr at Hirsch Performance

August 19, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

Till72 posts his final report from the Hirsch open day and it’s a quick interview with Manfred Lenherr, one of the guys over at Hirsch Performance.

Hirsch are Saab’s official tuning house and their products are first class. As with Saab, it’s been a turbulent year or so for Hirsch. Till talks to Manfred about that, and about the future for Hirsch Performance.

Related: Tour of Hirsch Performance, and A Look Around the Hirsch Collection of Saabs.

——

The last 18 months have been a rollercoaster for all who are connected to Saab. How did you at Hirsch experience that?

It has been a turbulent time for Saab, but during these difficulties, we at Hirsch Performance have remained confident that a solution for Saab would be found. To a large extent thanks to our commitment to quality and an unsurpassed customer experience, we have been fortunate enough to have very loyal regular customers, and have in fact increased both our market share and our revenue per vehicle over this time period.

Has there been a direct line of contact to Victor Müller or JAJ since the sale to Spyker?

The co-operation between Hirsch Performance and Saab Automobile is here to stay, and we occasionally get the opportunity to exchange a few words with various members of the Saab Automobile management team. In our daily business, the Saab aftersales team is our interface to Saab. The sales activities are coordinated with local Saab importers and adapted to the market specific demands.

Can you give us a hint about what is planned for the new 9-5? How much can you get out of the engines? Will there be some product to replace the currently plain black dash? Is there a chance that there will be a heavily modified car like the Troll R for the new 9-5?

What’s going to happen at the Paris Motor Show?

August 19, 2010 in Saabology

169 comments would tend to suggest that people are interested in the difficulties that are confronting some Saab dealers at the moment.

Saab clearly need to make some noise – and preferably before October.

But October is Saab’s chance to once again stand on a world stage and make announcement that says “We’re here!”

The Paris Auto Show is on from the 2nd to the 17th October and Saab are on the map of exhibitors. And check out their neighbors!

Click.

Here’s something I’d love to see. Saab executives wearing “100% GM-Free” T-shirts on the stands. In fact, anyone who visits the Paris show must wear a 100% GM-Free T-shirt. OK, so we’re still connected by parts, but the common punter doesn’t know that.

There’s one cheap stunt to get some publicity.

But there should be some other serious ways to get the public’s attention, too, which is why Saab will actually be there. That means they should have something big to announce.

The way I see it there’s two options and maybe they’ll go for maximum impact and announce both.

1. The new, refreshed Saab 9-3.

If they’re really doing an update to the Saab 9-3 for it’s final two years, then a big motor show is the perfect place to unveil it and Paris is a big motor show. It won’t be an all-new car, but they’ll have the Saab 9-5 there for that. This should be a reasonably significant upgrade to the 9-3 so it’s release will be a significant story.

2. Partnerships for the future.

Speculation has been rife on the interwebs that Saab have been talking to BMW about sharing some bits. Some say just engines and some say platforms as well. I’ve said a number of times already that I think it’s just engines, but I’ll be pleased to be wrong.

An announcement like that would make huge waves in the automotive world and it’d get plenty of press, too. If they could time an announcement like that for the Paris show then it would surely take up quite a few column inches.

The Saab 9-4x will debut at the LA Auto Show a month later, so it won’t be that. I’d bet on one or both of the above.

I just wish it were in the first week of September and not a month later than that.

Elkparts summer sale – nuts!

August 19, 2010 in sponsors

Twitterers may have already noticed that @Elkparts has been advertising some summer specials in the last few days.

How special are the specials?

Well, some of them are one-item-only jobs but if you’ve got the appropriate model, you could save up to 70%.

Example: Saab 9-5 parking assist for model year 03-04 (pictured), down from £335.94 to just £100.78.

That’s special.

You can check out Elkparts Summer Sale items here. Hopefully John will be adding some more items soon, so keep checking back too.

Wednesday Night Snippets, Part Two

August 19, 2010 in News, Saabology, sponsors, Troll Stuff

One of the odd things about Swade’s blog is that he’s time shifted well into the future — right now Tasmania is 15 hours ahead of me in the Central US time zone.  Thus, Wednesday Night Snippets can strike twice and have meaningful content in both posts.

Some good news on Saab’s business standings in Sweden:  Saab now holds the top credit rating from Creditsafe.  The Swedish Wire report goes on to mention that the rating is based upon profits from extraordinary actions and not sustainable operations, which is fair enough.  However, on the plus side, a good credit rating makes things a little easier for Saab while they continue to build long-term operations.

————-

As Swade posted earlier today, the 2011 Saab 9-4x will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.  This story has been repeated on several major automotive new outlets.  What’s noteworthy here is that at least two of the smaller journals, Kilometer Magazine and autoevolution, refer to the upcoming Saab 9-4x as a 2012 model.  It currently appears that the 9-4x will launch at the previously stated April 2011 date, which would make it a 2011 model, yes?  Probably nothing to make a big deal about, Saab is the one calling the shots.

————–

Site sponsor State of Nine has posted some great photos from the North American SOC 2010, including a beautiful shot of a white Sonett II.  What’s that I hear?  Why, Swade, this car is calling your name!

————-

Even though it’s been hot in the Southeastern United States for the last couple of weeks with several days above 100 degrees F (38 degrees C) where I live, we’ve been coping the best way that we can:

Hey, even the dog loves the top down in this heat!

Wednesday Night Snippets

August 18, 2010 in Saabology

Sorry for the slow posting today. Life gets in the way sometimes and we have a national election on Saturday. I’ve been listening to the candidates this evening as they rabbit on about things they claim to understand.

——

A win for Saab Quality (and right here in Hobart, too).

Sorry.

——

Saab 9-5 vs Saab Viggen flying machine. Grrrrrr.

——

Here’s something for people who also enjoy cars that are red, shiny and Italian.

——

For those who want to see more of something Jason Castriota got up to a little while ago, check out the new images of the Lancia Stratos.

True to its heritage.

——

This video, which is nothing to do with Saab (aside from a few possible appearances by Stig in an Audi) was spotted at Autosavant.

It starts slowly, but builds and around the two minute mark, it really kicks.

Team Brodd video from Kvarnturen 2010

August 18, 2010 in Saabology

I’m woefully under qualified to comment on anything to do with the Swedish Super Cup Rally circuit, but I really enjoyed this cockpit video posted on YouTube a few hours ago.

It apparently depicts Mikael Brodd and Fredrik Adolfsson navigating the rally course around Motala, Sweden in their Saab 9-3 rally car in the rally’s final stages this past Saturday.   Unfortunately, it appears that Team Brodd did not finish this stage.

I think that the video captures the essence of rallying from a driver’s point of view as well as any other.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD6SiVv1oak

A few notes:

1.  Team Brodd fields a normally aspirated Saab 9-3 to compete in the 2-wheel-drive classification.  That’s a departure from typical Saab motor sport entries.

2.  The “results” page seems to specify Ethanol fuel.

3.  Team Brodd refers to their 9-3 as a 9-3 “kit car” because it was originally a NG900 equipped with a turbocharged power plant and, over time, they’ve replaced enough parts that it’s now a naturally-aspirated 9-3.

4.  The video is posted by a user calling themselves “volvo940voc”.  Click at your own risk.

Saab 9-4x to show at LA Auto Show in November 2010

August 18, 2010 in News

Predicted here at SU back in June….. and now confirmed by the LA Auto Show people and reported at Autoblog.

The Saab 9-4x will show at the LA Auto Show in November this year.

We’ve been expecting this announcement to come sooner or later, though we didn’t exactly count on it coming from the LA Auto Show’s own Twitter page. But there it is anyway, straight from the horse’s mouth: “Saab has confirmed that the 9-4X Crossover will make its world debut at the LA Auto Show this Nov.”

The Saab 9-4x should be showing in its production specification ahead of its planned release in April 2011.

Hopefully we’ll be able to sort out those pesky engine details as well. All I’ve heard from within Saab (but some time ago) is that it will have the same engines as the Cadillac SRX on release – that’s a 3.0 NA engine for the base model and the 2.8T for the Aero.

Autoblog are predicting the 2.0T like the 9-5, but I haven’t heard that yet. It’ll be nice if it works out that way, though.

Thanks to John B for the tip.

Impressions of IntSaab – Part 2

August 18, 2010 in Saabology

It’s been a massive couple of months for Saab gatherings. There’s been the Saab Festival, the SOC in the US, the annual SOC gathering in Bath and now this Internation Meeting of Saab Clubs – IntSaab.

This second look at IntSaab comes from of our SU regulars, a bloke by the name of “Me”.

——

Yes I had my second SAAB festival this year. And I can only say one thing, and let me use the words of Sister Sledge: We are FAMILY !!!

I met Robin as well as some Aussies (see photo) and saw the car from Svizzera. In Interlaken was also an Orange 99 from Russia.

This is my IntSAAB, in pictures:

Yes a 96 still looks good on the street.

But it also did look good in the past :-)

In Trollhättan the colour was yellow, in Interlaken it is green. Those belong to René Hirsch, but I don’t know if they are original or replicas.

——

OK, Swade here….

The green Sonett is actually Saab Sonett #4 and it has been through one heck of a wild ride over the years. It was purchased from Saab by an engineer named Sigvard Sorennsson (for 3,000 crowns). He didn’t like the green Sonett body so much, so he removed it and sold it. Over the original Sonett chassis, he built a fibreglass body that was more to his liking, and called it the Facett. It was originally white, then ended up red. It was sold on again and driven for another 22 years, eventually ending up as a garden ornament for the kids to play in, before resting finally in a basement garage.

In the mid 1990′s a German doctor by the name of Klaus Muller-Ott heard about the car and set about buying it and rebuilding it. He even tracked down the original body and eventually restored the entire car.

Today, it belongs to Rene Hirsch, from Hirsch Performance, and they own the Facett body as well. What you see in that picture is both cars together.

——

Seems like you can meet an Australian everywhere in the world. But he didn’t bring none of his SAAB’s from Oz. ;-)

OK, Swade here again.

This is one of those episodes where you realise how small the world can be. The guy in the photo is indeed an Aussie. He lives in Sydney, his name is Simon A and back in 2007, I bought a silver 1985 Saab 900 Aero from him. Simon has one of the sweetest 99Turbo’s you’ll ever see.

Chocolate is the other reason to visit Switzerland. And best of all, you have to drive a curvy road up to the mountain and down to the next valley to get there, and a second time to get back.

Modern cars don’t have bumpers. I’m wondering haw can you attach such a plate on a modern e-car without grill ;-)

The encounter of the generations. I like those three faces :-)

Yes there where also some classic 900 on exposition. And I must admit, this car even looks good as a pick-up.

Back to the more modern cars. The new 9-5 IS a big car, even in comparison with the old one.

Yes, it seems like people where parking besides similar cars.

These two are like Laurel and Hardy (it’s actually Backstrom and Carlsson). They are so funny, and you can listen and listen and listen …..

The Saturday evening has been quite wet, but just before the Meeting ended on Sunday the sun came out. And good looking SAAB’s looked even better.

Well that was my IntSAAB in Pictures. I don’t think I will be travelling to Finland next year. But anybody will find me in Spa, Belgium on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August 2012. ;-)

Have a nice week.
