Survey – who wants a higher output Saab 9-5?

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

People have been talking about this in comments quite a bit in the last 24 hours. It seems like a no-brainer, but I’ll do it anyway, just so there’s a definite place here on SU where customers can say they let Saab know that there is a desire for this in the marketplace.

At the moment, the highest output from the GM high feature V6 engine seems to be the 325hp they squeeze from it in the Opel Insignia OPC.

Like you, I reckon Saab’s engineers could do more than that. It’s just a guess, but I’d be surprised if there isn’t another lazy 25hp that could be extracted from that lump without putting Saab’s warranty provisions into risky territory. Whether the existing gearbox could adequately handle the requisite increase in power and torque is another matter, but let’s assume so.

Call it a Viggen. Call it what you like. Just build it.

I’ve lived quite happily with 200-240hp cars for a number of years now, but I must say it’d be good to have another angry Saab in the range. A statement. Something fans can point to, aspire to. Something they can crowd around at car shows and spend a bit of time figuring out what they have to sell in order to buy it.

So….. who wants one?

A worrying comment about Saab sales

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

We’ve seen that Saab sales have risen in the last few months. They had no choice because things were about as bad as you can get in 2009 and the early bit of 2010.

We’re all hoping for a continued sales rise, but this comment that’s just appeared on site is a cause for concern. It’s from someone calling themselves “Insider”

As a Saab salesman in the UK we held a launch weekend with extended opening hours , free drinks and food etc. In the 2 days we had only 5 people look at the car despite spending £1000′s on advertising locally as well as Saabs national push.

The car has been out now essentially 3 weeks and we have yet to sell a single car. Sadly we are not alone as of the local dealerships (6 in total) to us are also experiencing a total lack of interest. I think 2 garages have sold 1 car each and 4 none at all.

In 15 years of selling Saabs I’ve never seen it so quiet. When the car came out we were told no discounts and no dealer stocking . We now have extra room to discount as well as free nav and 3 month free stocking. Sadly a lot of people have talked the talk when it comes to buying a new Saab but very , very few actually write out a cheque!!!!

Saabs are selling and sales will build, I’m sure. But what we’re hearing here is indeed a worry.

Solutions?

Impressions of IntSaab – part 1

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

IntSaab was held over the weekend and I’ve received a few photos already, which I’ll split over two different entries.

These first photos are from Christoph Bleile, the PR Manager for Saab Automobile in Switzerland. As you’ll see, the Saab Spirit was alive and well at IntSaab this year.

But first, a quick look around at the scenery, which was …… big.

Some Saab 99′s

OK, to the spirited bit, which is quite nice to hear.

Saab Switzerland decided to raise some money at the event, to donate to a charity that organises holidays for disabled children.

They cleaned out the cellars and sold some old exclusive promotional material to aid the cause. They also sold off this toy Saab, shown here with Saab Switzerland manager, Mario Klaus.

All told, they raised around 4,300CHF, which is just over US$4,000!!

Well done Saab Switzerland and IntSaabers!!

Tour of Hirsch Performance

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

This is the second report from Till72, who attended the Hirsch Performance open day last weekend on SU’s behalf.

For newcomers to this site, Hirsch Performance are Saab’s official tuning house and work done by Hirsch is covered under Saab’s warranty provisions. Unfortunately, Hirsch products aren’t available in all countries (yet).

Thanks again to Till for some excellent reportage.

Related: A look around at the Hirsch collection of Saabs

——

As part of the open day we had the chance to get some insights on a tour through the Hirsch Performance facilities and to learn how they develop and test their products.

This steering wheel is a new product for the 9-3 that is to be launched in about a month. Hirsch basically took the original Saab part and stripped it down to components responsible for safety and functionality. Those components are kept, just the form of the wheel is changed a bit by using a bit more foam here and a bit less there and by applying a nice leather surface. You get an aftermarket replacement that still uses the same connectors, airbag and switches and offers the same safety as the original part does. I had it in my hands and it felt that good that I might buy it once it’s available.

Report from Pebble Beach – Part 2 – a test drive

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

This is the second of two reports to come in from Pebble Beach over this last weekend.

It comes to us from James C and I figured people would be interested in reading this one as it’s another of those “One man’s test drive” type articles. For many, the opinions of potential buyers just like them is the most important opinion of all. Well, here’s a quick one that I hope you enjoy.

——

Thanks for the alert about Saab being at Pebble Beach. We went over (we live in Pebble) looking for the Saab tent. Found it and what an awesome car.

We took it for a spin and I am pleased to report that there were no rattles, which on the roads around here means something. The rep tells me that the 2.0 is much smoother than the old 9-5 setup. We drove the Aero since that is all they had.

Considering all of the cars around here, particularly this week, the 9-5 stood out. From the moment I got in and pushed the start button, it was sweet. It drives like a Saab. If you have owned a model year from 2000 or later, you will know what I mean.

The steering feels somewhere between the 9-5 and 9-3 whether in sport or comfort. An intuitive feel. And of course, sticks to the road like it is on rails. All the gadgets were cool, but the parking sensor picture on the display was the best I think – particularly the front sensor. Seats were good, but maybe a tad stiff. But, what a driving experience – which is why we own them – and safety of course.

My wife just could not believe how well it drove. Which is good since she is representative of a large market. I could not help thinking, when watching her reactions while driving, what the designers had in mind.

I don’t know if you experienced this when you drove one, but you can see with this car where Saab is headed. If they can make their numbers and this car gets through an iteration or two, it is going to evolve into something incredible, I think.

Saab “individual” program – who’s interested?

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve had a couple of interesting questions posed to me over the last few days via email. I thought it best to pose them here on the site and see what people think.

The main thrust of the issue is the possibility of a custom Saab program similar to BMW’s Individual program, where there’s a much wider range of color, trim and equipment options on offer – for a price.

People have different tastes and if you’ve got the money, then BMW’s individual or Audi’s Exclusive programs will allow you to cater to (most of) those tastes. Different paint finishes, non-standard leather coverings, special wheels, audio systems, etc. There are limitations, but the range is much more extensive than the standard range.

So – the big question – who’d like to customise their Saab more than what they offer as standard. More importantly, who’d be willing to pay for it?

I think Victor Muller well and truly understands the importance of a customised interior. One look at the interior page of the Spyker website will tell you that. I’m sure he’d love to bring some magic to the Saab interior if the market is there.

Thanks to Taylor at Lotus Enthusiast for the idea

——

Another take on a similar subject…..

Who’d like a higher level engine spec, but with some base model trim?

If you order an Aero version of the new Saab 9-5, for example, you can only have it with leather. What if you wanted it with a cloth interior.

I heard today from a guy in Sweden named Per K, who has a friend who ended up buying a Volvo S80 for this very reason. He really wanted a cloth interior, but when the new 9-5 came out, it was leather-only in the Aero spec that he wanted.

US Dealers – how are you going to local-launch the 9-5?

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

We saw some of the European dealers do some pretty good launch events for the Saab 9-5 at their dealerships.

With the 9-5 hitting US shores very soon (the first big shipment is due later this week), it’ll be time for dealers to introduce the 9-5 to their customers.

I’ve heard from one dealer already – General Sales Saab in West Chester, Pennsylvania – with their plans for the 9-5 introduction. It looks like they’ve lined up all their accompanying vehicles already, they just need a delivery date for the guest of honour!

They’ve secured the following extra display vehicles to give the new Saab 9-5 a little bit of historical perspective:

  • An original Saab Sonett I
  • A 1968 95,
  • A club member’s 1972 96,
  • An employee’s 1988 SPG,
  • A commemorative edition convertible,
  • A flight of Viggens, and several other classics.

I don’t have a date for this event yet, but as soon as I do, I’ll post it on the site. The effort General Sales are putting into this launch is pretty commendable and I hope it goes off like a firecracker!

Any of you other US dealers got something special planned?

Lessons to be learned from UK launches (i.e. remedies to complaints I heard from Brits about some of the launches that were held there….)

  • Get your invitations out early and make sure people who need to have one, have one on time.
  • Make sure you’ve got adequate staff and an adequate number of cars to facilitate test drives.
  • Make sure you’ve catered adequately for the event.

Report from Pebble Beach – Part 1

August 17, 2010 in Saabology

I received this from Michael L, who popped in on the Concours D’Elegance and associated displays at Pebble Beach over the weekend.

Great report, and great photos as well. As you can see from Michael’s report and the number of people looking around the Saab/Spyker pavilion, the new company did well to be there.

——

Hey Steven,

I was in Monterey this weekend and went to the Coucours show at Pebble Beach today. I got some pics of the Saab/Spyker tent that I wanted to send to you.

I will say that it was incredibly good to see Saab on display there with Spyker. It seemed very fitting and there were lots of people milling about. I overheard many stories that all seemed to begin with “You know, years ago I had a Saab and I loved it.” They were right down the way from Lotus and Porsche, so they had some distinguished company.

They also had a fleet of 9-5 Aeros parked out front that you could sit in. No test drives today, unfortunately (they did that on Saturday). They also had a very rare 1956 Sonett on display.

I got a look at the black plastic dash panel which, in truth, doesn’t look all that bad, but I saw the textured piece on the car at the LA auto show and I have to say that looked stunning. The sooner they can get that into the cars, the better.

Interestingly enough, Jason Castriota was one of the judges at the show. When they announced his name they mentioned all the styling houses he worked for and then talked about his recent appointment to head of design at Saab. Ian Callum, current head of design for Jaguar, was also one of the judges.

Overall a great show, and it was really good to see Saab there.

Expressen address?

I’d like to bill them some of the concepts ‘expressened’ in their paper today.

I’m kidding, sort of.

Report: One in three said no to Saab jobs

August 16, 2010 in News

SVT have reported the following in the Swedish press today. It’s good to hear that things are working out for various people. I just hope Saab can get the labour force they need, when they eventually need it.

Thanks to Jan B for the translation.

——

When Saab Automobile in Trollhättan upped the pace and re-hired more than 250 previously dismissed workers, as many as a third said thanks, but no thanks, to a factory-floor return.

“It surprised me that as many as 30 percent of respondents said no, given how it has looked with the recession etc. But it’s really nice that people have found other solutions. Some have changed direction completely and invested in training, others have new jobs, “says Håkan Skött, Metallklubbens chairman at Saab in Trollhättan.

Saab people returned to work on Monday after three weeks of vacation. For most in manufacturing the holidays became shorter than usual because production has high priority now. Shortly before the holidays production was increased from 28 cars per hour to 39 cars. That makes for a yearly rate of over 60 000 cars.

224 people were hired in production to meet the rate increase, says Dagens Nyheter’s internet edition. In addition, 30 were hired to replace staff on study or parental leave.
We are now running at the maximum output for one shift.

-If we are to accelerate more, we will need to go up to two shifts and then we will have to re-employ more people. But we are not there yet, “said Håkan Skött.
Saab Automobile now has approximately 3,500 employees, roughly split equally between workers and other employees.

State of Nine report on SOC 2010

August 16, 2010 in Saabology, sponsors

The following is from Dan De Vlieger, owner of site sponsor, State of Nine. I’m looking forward to catching up with Dan myself in Boston later this month (more on that later).

——

I’m happy to report that (after driving 1,644 miles in a Dodge Caravan – I really think there is a market for a cool European minivan – the Saab Convention in Aurora OH last month was a great success. The turnout for the event was great. The quality of classic Saabs was probably the best I’ve seen. And, to top it off, there were lots of special guests in attendance. Saab is back!

It was great meeting lots of you and sharing ideas on the kinds of things you want to see for your Saab. I even had some ‘Saab celebrity encounters’, and it was great to speak with Peter Backstrom (the Manager of Saab’s Car Museum in Sweden), “EggsnGrits” from SaabsUnited, and especially Victor Muller and Jan Ake Jonsson from Saab. We even had the New Saab 9-5 Sedan and a Spyker C8 Spyder on the show field.

This was my ninth Saab Convention and I can tell you that in the past, a Saab Execustive might swoop in and do the Saturday night dinner speech. But Peter, Victor, and Jan Ake were walking the area and talking to owners throughout the day. I kept seeing them zooming around in various classic Saabs. When I approached Victor and Jan Ake to say thanks for saving Saab, they were welcoming and spoke confidently about the future. These are car guys and they are loving the opportunity at hand to make Saab distinct again – it is obvious and inspiring.

Test drives of the new Saab 9-5 got rave reviews (I didn’t have time)! Regarding the Spyker C8 Spyder that made it to the show, I can only tell you that pictures don’t do the car justice. This car could go zero to sixty in twenty seconds and it would be the coolest modern car of its class that I’ve ever seen (it goes 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds though).

The finish, the details, the design, it was honestly breathtaking. This car seemed more like a modern creation of a historic Bugatti or 1939 Delahaye than a Ferrari type car that you might picture when hearing the term ‘supercar’. The bottom line, Spyker knows how to build a distinct, quality automobile and this attention to detail will surely contribute to Saab’s rejuvenation.

Monday Snippets – IntSaab edition

August 16, 2010 in Saabology

A few photos have popped up on Flickr from IntSaab, in Switzerland. Check these babies out!

There’s no caption with the photo, but my (not difficult) guess is this 16V has been converted over to ethanol use.

And the guys from Dimini.ch doesn’t just sell classic old Saabs (in 1:43 scale), they also own some classic old Saabs (in 1:1 scale). It looks like they took out the award for best Saab 99 at the show.

——

We have already covered the issue of Saab owners losing their keys and having to get them replaced. If you lose both keys, it can be a very expensive proposition (SU article).

One of our Australian motoring publications, Drive, did a little digging and found that Saab were not the only ones to have expensive key replacement. Having said that, though, the process seems to be much cheaper here than in other countries.

From comments to that article:

My drive is a 2004 Saab, I recently wanted new keys, both electronic fobs had disintergrated over time revealing the electronic guts of the fobs. Cost in Aust $250 per key + $90 programming each. I purchased two new key fobs on ebay from a Saab overseas cost A$35 each including postage + $90 to program both here.

The SU article linked above quotes a cost of around $1,000 or more for what I assume is the same service quoted at around $680 in the comment above. It’s not necessarilty the same service, as this guy already had existing keys with the CIM included, just in very shabby condition, hence the lower cost.

——

Gasgoo is reporting that there could be some Saab bargains coming in China….

The price of the 9-3, which only came in gasoline 2.0T and 2.8 V6 form, ranged from the 340,000rmb to 529,000rmb in its hey day but recent news articles indicate that in a bid to get rid of the 9-3′s before the introduction of BAIC made 9-3′s (although the 9-5 is set to come first) Shanghai Saab dealerships have dropped the 9-3′s pricing by 80,000rmb. So a Saab 9-3 Vector 2.0TS that once cost 429,000rmb is now only 340,900rmb.

That doesn’t seem to bode well for Saab’s reintroduction to China, does it? Not for the 9-3, at least.

Thanks to AH!

——

It’s nice to know that the “last car guy in Congress” is a Saab guy. Or a partial Saab guy, at least.

——

The Saab 9-5 in good company at Monterey over the weekend…..

Thanks to Dick L!

——

And finally, a bit at GM Inside News covering a new turbocharged application for the 3-litre 6-cylinder, which is reportedly going to be used in the Saab 9-4x’s sister vehicle, the Caddy SRX in 2013.

Saab do have options to continue to use GM engines and architectures for some time, but it’s unknown if that covers just existing engines, or new engines as well. It’s also unknown whether Saab would be bothered with this. The figures for it are unknown, there’s no indication as to the source and I don’t know the people at GMI well enough to know if this is reliable or not.

Saab Dealer listing – Canada

August 15, 2010 in News

The following is the list of Saab dealers that will be involved in operations beginning in Canada this week.

There will be 12 dealerships to begin with, as well as four authorised service centers in other locations. All are listed below.

Many of these dealerships are ones that were Saab dealers previously, but at least one is a relative newcomer, maybe more.

What’s a mystery (to me, at least) is the non-inclusion of Dueck, who were the Saab dealer in Vancouver when I was there a few years ago. I don’t know if it’s Dueck’s decision or Saab’s, but it would seem to be a mysterious one to me. I can’t imagine Bill Convery not selling Saabs and servicing his customers, and I’ll bet his customers can’t imagine that scenario, either.

A look around the Hirsch collection of Saabs

August 15, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s a quick initial entry from Till72, our man on the ground at St Gallen over the weekend, where he attended the Hirsch Performance open day.

Till has a number of things to share from the day, but here’s his initial report, showing a look around just some of the cars living at Hirsch’s headqarters.

——

One highlight at the Hirsch Performance open day were the cars from Rene Hirsch’s collection shown in the workshop. Of course all cars were in amazing condition making you dream a bit…

The car Peter Backstrom was especially fond of is the yellow 900 Aero convertible. It was sold and cusomized according to one customers wishes but even though a deposit was paid in advance, the customer never picked up his car. The guys at Hirsch used it as a show car and the visitors getting in and out made the front seats look a bit more used than you’d expect from a car that has only 2300 km on the clock.

Peter told me that he had a look at the cars on display together with Rene Hirsch the day before and was told that the 900 shall be restored to original Aero condition with grey exterior parts.

As I am a big fan of the first 9-3 generation my personal favourite was the Troll convertible. There’s not much I wouldn’t do in order to get my hands on that car. Even more because this one also has only about 2500 km on the clock. A real black beauty.

To complete the convertible family there also was a current 9-3, of course equipped with all goodies Hirsch has to offer. Don’t know about the kilometres on that car but we were told that it might have the most of all on display because it was used as a daily driver for a while.

Of course there also was a Troll R. As it was parked to a new 9-5 one might think about the possibility of a new Troll R…

The 9-5, a TiD4, is actually a test vehicle with the interior stripped and the engine sitting next door. A bit more on that later on.
