Information – Saab in Canada

August 15, 2010 in News

We’ve had a bit more information about Saab’s operations in Canada come through. Some has come via comments and some via email.

Some have been asking about dealerships in Calgary. Here’s what we’ve got:

Hyatt Automotive Group
161 Glendeer Circle SE
Calgary Alberta T2H 2S8

We’ve also received the following, via comments:

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to share some fabulous news! As of August 16th, 2010, Springman’s Auto Centre in Langley, BC will the first NEW SAAB dealer in BC! We are extremely excited about the opportunity and we are looking forward to serving all past, present and future SAAB owners!

As some may know already, we were previously a Saturn dealer and, farther back in history, a SAAB dealer. Our service department is set up and ready to go for all maintenance and warranty claims. As of Monday, we are the place to go for all your service and parts needs!

On the sales front, orders are being placed as we speak for new 2011 models. We should start seeing these on the lot in around 10-12 weeks!

I’ll be happy to try and answer as many questions as I can. The Springmans have been here in town since 1986 and are committed to providing the best service and sales experience possible and we are gearing up to continue that experience to our new customers!

We are located on the Langley Bypass in Surrey (Surrey-Langley border). (Our website will be updated in the coming weeks to include all the awesome new stuff that’s coming!)

Thanks for listening (reading) everyone! Please pass this news along and we hope to hear from you soon!

I’m told that letters should be going out to Canadian Saab owners early this week to notify them as to their dealer network. It sounds like there will be 12 dealers across Canada to begin with, though maybe the Springman group noted above will be #13 (and maybe not).

Images from Switzerland – IntSaab and Hirsch

August 15, 2010 in Saabology

Ok, so I don’t really have anything from IntSaab itself yet, but here’s a nice image overlooking Interlaken, from Radu.

I hope those travelling to Interlaken took it easy on the roads. The police and judiciary tend to be pretty brutal in terms of dishing out speeding fines in Switzerland.

——

The big event on the way to IntSaab was the Hirsch Performance open day. Our man on the scene was Till72 and he’s sent through some teaser images. He’ll have some more to share with us later on.

One view from inside the Hirsch building…

Some rather special looking Saabs in the parking lot….

And some more parking lot action. Looks like they had a goodly number turn up…..

A little of the Hirsch vehicle collection….

Special guests #1 – that’s Robin M’s complimentary 9-5 in the carpark…..

And special guests #2 – Saab Museum Director, Peter Backstrom enjoying a brew….

SOC GB – Saab Sonett II stroker

August 14, 2010 in Saabology

Saab commenced production of the Saab Sonett II in 1966, making 28 units that year and following up with another 230 units of the two-stroke version in 1967 before switching to the V4 four-stroke engine for the rest of the car’s short production life. There were only 1,868 Sonett II’s produced in total before the Sonett III came to life.

With only 258 two-stroke Sonetts ever produced, it’s fair to say that a chance to see – let alone ride in – a Saab Sonett II two-stroke is a rare thing. I was fortunate enough to do both at the Saab Owners Club 2010 national gathering in Bath.

This Saab Sonett II stroker belongs to a guy named Peter B. He bought the car from a seller in Switzerland around four years ago. Amazingly, the seller actually had two to choose from when Peter bought the car.

It’s fair to say that Peter’s put a fair bit of work into the car. It’s also fair to say that he won’t be parting with it any time soon (though I’ve already told him that if he does decide to sell, he should call Australia first!).

That interior is quite special because only the two-stroke Sonetts got the wooden panel. The V4 Sonetts that came later got a black plastic dashboard instead. Whilst either dashboard looks classical and just fantastic, the wood really does look special.

Powering this particular Sonett II along the road is a Saab two-stroke engine, 841cc capacity and output of around 60hp. That’s only a little less power than that four-stroke V4 that replaced it, but the car was much lighter at around 660kgs compared to the Sonett III’s 800kg.

This is why purists love the Sonett II – it’s lighter weight. It’s no rocketship, but if you keep the revs and the power up then these cars just love to maintain speed whilst you push them into corners.

A note to the… ahem…. larger gents out there reading this. Ingress and egress from a later model Saab Sonett III is not an easy nor simple task. In a Sonett II, it makes for champagne comedy and I’m sure one or two people in England would still have a chuckle at the memories of me trying to get out of Peter’s stroker.

For me, though, it was worth every second. The experience of riding in the Sonett II stroker was one I’ll long remember and my thanks go to Peter for the opportunity.

SOC GB – a pristine Saab 93

August 14, 2010 in Saabology

This could well be the closest I’ve ever been to an old Saab that looks like it’s just rolled off the factory floor. Hopefully these photos will show enough of the detailed work that’s gone into this car to do it justice, though I fear not.

I saw this car at the Saab Owners Club GB annual event in Bath last month and it’s fair to say that it stole the show. I suspect it does that almost everywhere it goes.

This is a Saab 93 and what’s amazing about the owner of this car is that a) he did the complete restoration of this car himself, and b) apparently he’s got three other classic Saabs in just as good a condition!

I’m short on words when it comes to this car, so I’ll just let the pictures tell the story. Click to enlarge and enjoy.

New Saab dealer in Montreal

August 14, 2010 in Saabology

Saab will be hitting the ground in Canada quite soon and I received a photo today from Simon M, showing some first signs of life there.

Bourassa, a GM dealer, was selling used car in this building, just beside his GM dealership. Bourassa was a SAAB dealer many years ago at the same address on St-Martin blv. and also a SAAB dealer on Chomedey blv. in Laval until last year.

The dealership is in Laval, just outside Montreal. Simon M snapped this photo today just as they were putting the signs on the building. I’d say there’s still a little work to be done, but it’s great to see some signs of life there in Canada.

Welcome back, Laval Saab.

Video: Fifth Gear review of Saab 9-5

August 14, 2010 in Saabology

Someone’s gone and posted the Fifth Gear review on Youtube, which is a handy way of getting around those geocentric restrictions they’ve put on it.

I don’t think there’s too much wrong with this. VBT assesses the car quite fairly, I think. The base model diesel isn’t the car to get excited about and we’ve all acknowledged that the interior needs something to brighten it up a little. The only question mark I’d lodge is with her comment about the gear shift lever and action, which would only be relevant if you drove different cars all of the time.

I think the car fills the frame quite well. It looks pretty good to me. I don’t know whether Fifth Gear asked for a base model diesel, or maybe that’s all Saab GB had to give them. Hopefully they’ll get to drive one of the other variations soon.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKbwCgMHf_4

There’s a somewhat confusing, but still decent text review from Fifth Gear here. They’re reviewing the new car but only have photos of the old model associated with the entry. Strange.

They also give the absolutely excellent navigation system just two ‘stars’ based on cost but say nothing about function, which is its strongpoint. Personally, I found the electronics in this car to be top notch.

Other elements of the review seem OK, over all.

Thanks Lennart!

Helping the Lane Motor Museum by driving a Saab 96 V4

August 13, 2010 in Troll Stuff

As you may recall from a previous entry, the Lane Motor Museum is a fabulous little automotive treasure right here in my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.  The Lane Motor Museum boasts many one-of-a-kind prototypes, several examples of limited-production variants and one of the largest collections of Tatra automobiles anywhere.  Naturally, they have a few Saabs.

They have currently under roof a red 1960 Saab 93 rally car, a green-and-white 1967 Saab 96 two-stroke cabriolet prototype, a light blue 1967 Saab 95 and a green 1969 Saab 96 V4.  It’s the latter that is of interest to us today, although the thought is to preserve the heritage of all of these cars through the efforts of people like Jeff Lane, the proprietor.  You see, the Lane Motor Museum is holding a rally to raise funds on September 25.  A rally where the participants can rent one of the 31 available cars to participate.  The little green Saab 96 is one of those cars that is available to drive.

The rally runs from the museum on the East side of Nashville, through downtown and on to Ashland City, Tennessee, a town on the banks of the Cumberland River about 25 miles from the museum.  There, Lane will have their 1964 Amphicar, truly a rare vehicle, available for rides on Cheatham Lake, a reservoir on the Cumberland River.  After lunch and a ride on the river in a car (should be a great show), all will return to the museum via a different route.  As one may expect, this is not a competitive rally, just more of a drive with checkpoints.  Still, it should be a good time.

Currently, there are three Tatras, a Lotus Elise, a Renault Alpine, a very dignified-looking 1962 BMW 3200, a Porsche 911 and a handful of odd ball modern cars available to drive in the rally.  Of course, the Saab 96 is also available.  The Citroens, Fiats, even more Tatras and some special-interest modern cars have been rented.  The complete display of available rally vehicles may be found here (scroll down).

So, what is the punch line?  I’m debating whether or not it’s worth a tax-deductible US$550 to drive the Saab in the rally.  I’m still not sure, and I’ve got other obligations.  We’ll see.  The truth is that US$800 (the current bid level) to drive their pristine 1947 Tatra T-87 may be a better deal.  Seriously, when else would I get to drive one of those again?  Never?

If you’re interested in participating, let me know.  They are allowing two drivers per car, and we can split the costs.

Saab and Spyker at Pebble Beach Concours

August 13, 2010 in News

Saab have been hosting some media at Pebble Beach the last couple of days. That much I knew.

What I didn’t know is that they’ve set up a very nice looking pavillion for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which is on this weekend.

Sander Van Djik, the marketing maven from Spyker, has taken some images and shot them up on Flickr so that we can all have a look.

The following images show the pavilion under construction and a few of the cars they’re displaying there. Click the Flickr link, above, for more.

Pebble Beach is on the top shelf of auto events world-wide, so this is a big thing for our little Swedish company (and no drop in the ocean for Spyker, either).

Only 175 cars get to go in the actual concours event each year so its the finest of the fine there and a whole bunch of automotive appreciators coming to look at them.

Saab and Spyker people, do enjoy!

Correction – Saab naming story from Bloomberg

August 13, 2010 in News

Last night I ran a story from Bloomberg and from the excerpt that I took (and my comment afterwards) it sounded as if Saab Automobile were seeking permission to use the Gripen name.

This was an error on my part. I prepared the story around 2 minutes before going to bed and it was a rush job that led to an error.

I failed to include a preceding paragraph from the story. The full excerpt should have been as follows:

The company wants to change its name, preferably to Saab Cars, to reflect the ownership of the Swedish carmaker, Muller said. The new name would be for the listed parent company, which would have the Spyker and Saab carmakers as separate subsidiaries.

Spyker has been in discussions with Saab AB, the Swedish maker of the Gripen fighter plane, about the rights to the name. These talks have been on hold over the summer holidays and are likely to resume next month, Muller said.

As you can see, the story here is about a request to call the overall entity by the name Saab Cars, with Saab and Spyker as subsidiaries. There was/is no intention of seeking use of the Gripen name and it was erroneous of me to imply might have been.

My apologies. Now, on to other things.

Friday Snippets – VM-OK and Fifth Gear edition

August 13, 2010 in News, Saabology

I received an email from Victor Muller a few minutes ago and he reports that all is well and good. The gall bladder was ditched on Monday. He’s back on his feet now and will be at Pebble Beach tomorrow for the Saab presser being held there.

Good news!

——

Fifth Gear have apparently filmed a road test of the new Saab 9-5, with Vicki at the wheel.

Sadly, it seems to be restricted based on your location and as I’m not one who fiddles with such things, I’m currently unable to view it.

Click here and try your luck. If you can see it, perhaps you can pass on their thoughts.

——

One of the prime reasons I resolved to work so hard on covering the Saab sale and making sure it stayed in the news was because I felt that Saab deserved that chance – a chance to influence their own fate. I was very strong in my opinion that a decision to close Saab should not be made by a bunch of executives in another country, several of whom had probably never even visited Trollhattan.

Ed Whitacre, the man who had the final say, announced today that he will resign from GM, effective 1 September. He’ll have spent just over one year on the job there. Structurally speaking, he had every right, even an obligation, to decide Saab’s fate. Ethically, morally? Not so much.

I’m just glad the right decision was made in the end. Enjoy your latest retirement, Ed.

——

Our man in the UK, Robin M, seems to be enjoying this whole drive-to-IntSaab-in-a-new-9-5 thing.

Brand new car, Euro lodgings and good mates everywhere. It’s nice to be him, ain’t it :-)

——

And finally…….

A Saab billboard from Germany!!

This one was spotted by Alexandros, in Munich. His translation of the main text is “What was to be proven.” and the ad then ties in with Saab’s new Anything But Ordinary campaign.

De Telegraff: Victor Muller recovering from surgery in the United States

August 13, 2010 in News

According to De Telegraff, our own Victor Muller has been hospitalized in the United States for gall bladder surgery.  As is his fashion, he says simply that his work for Spyker need not halt during his recovery.

Best wishes from all of us, dear sir.  Please rest and heal; we are all counting on your vigor.

Thanks for the tip in comments from Robert and for the multiple tips on Twitter, which is becoming more and more useful everyday.

Bloomberg on Spyker stock listing

August 13, 2010 in News

There’s no link online yet, but I’ve received a copy of a Bloomberg story covering plans for a Spyker stock listing in Stockholm.

And a little more, too…..

——

Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) — Spyker Cars NV, which bought Saab Automobile in February, aims to be listed on the Stockholm stock market before the end of the year, Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said in an interview.

“We think it’ll be in the last quarter,” Muller said by phone late yesterday. “This assumes of course we can reach agreement with the stock exchange on the terms and conditions of the listing. But the last quarter is the objective.”

…..It remains unclear whether Spyker must issue new shares when it lists in Stockholm or whether the Amsterdam shares can be transferred, Muller said from Long Island, N.Y. If Spyker doesn’t have to issue new shares “we won’t because of the dilution,” he said.

And here’s the little bit more…..

Spyker has been in discussions with Saab AB, the Swedish maker of the Gripen fighter plane, about the rights to the name. These talks have been on hold over the summer holidays and are likely to resume next month, Muller said.

It seems there might be a Gripen instead of a Griffin in the future. Interesting times…..

Thanks to Ola for the text!

Adrian Hallmark on Saab in Latin America (and elsewhere)

August 12, 2010 in News

E24 have followed up on the story about Saab expanding into Latin America, speaking to Adrian Hallmark today and getting some more details.

Following is a Googletrans of the original story, which can be found here, in Swedish.

——

Why are you establishing a company in Latin America?

- Latin America is one of the world’s largest car markets and we are not there, we see a future for biofuel in Brazil, “says Adrian Hallmark.

- The car market in Latin America has a climate suitable for a premium brand like Saab, we see great opportunities to grow.

He says that the market in Latin America is polarized, with both very cheap cars in large volumes and bigger and more expensive cars in low volumes.

- It makes it a very interesting market for us. We want to beat us into a more expensive brand and compete with BMW, “says Adrian Hallmark.

Which countries are interesting?

- Brazil is our first choice but Argentina is on our list of interesting markets and we plan to re-establish ourselves in Chile and Mexico in the long run, “he says.

What is the timetable for setting out?

- We hope to have found our dealers before the year is over and then we can get started with sales in the first half of next year, “says Adrian Hallmark, who believes that sustainability is the key to good performance in the new markets.

- We are not looking for overnight success, we want to build from scratch and it will probably take us two years to achieve decent volumes. But we want to start now and find good partners as soon as possible.

Are you looking to other countries aside from Latin America?

- We also look at Russia, China and India. We have just re-introduced ourselves in Japan, and want to re-establish ourselves in Australia.

- This year we plan to invest in Russia and China, next year we will take on India, “says Adrian Hallmark.

General Motors distributed Saab cars in 23 countries around the world. But Adrian Hallmark says that GM was not fully focused on the Saab and sales were, in many cases, modest.

- Look at Australia for example, we know that there is potential for many more Saab sales than the rather mediocre market we had before, “says Adrian Hallmark.

- GM also tried launching Saab in Russia, with neither major investments or strategies. Now we can do it on your own and we can do it properly. We ship to which a project team that will lead to the establishment at some point next week, says the former Volkswagen director, who was recruited by Saab earlier this year.

Even in Russia, Saab plans to start setting up care and have a long term plan.

- It is important to think long term if you want to enter these markets and we do. We will attack them systematically over the coming years so that we can get them on their feet, “says Adrian Hallmark.
