Colored Saab brightens dreary Volvo parking lot

September 21, 2010 in Saabology

Our source for this photo set wishes to remain anonymous, but says these images were snapped in a visitors carpark outside “another Swedish car maker”.

My guess is that it wasn’t Koenigsegg :-)

Saab 95

My first thought upon seeing this was “Gee, the Swedish weather’s taken a turn for the worse since I was there a few months ago…..”

Saab 95

My second thought was “Gee, it’s nice to see some bright color in that black/grey/silver car park!”

The truth, however, is that many modern large cars would look silly in bright orange and that modern metallic silver/grey/black paintjobs do add a decent dollop of sophistication to many ordinary looking designs.

Saab 95

….and the third thing I thought when I looked at these was “Geez, the Saab 95 has got to be one of the most overlooked and underexposed Saabs of all time, possibly just behind the first-generation 9000″

Which is true, IMHO.

Carlsson nearly won a Monte Carlo in a Saab 95. Imagine one of the most prestigious rallies of the era being won by a guy in a stationwagon (even if it’s one of the only three-door wagons in the world).

I want the Saab

September 21, 2010 in Editorial

Another long-rambling tome that gets some stuff off my chest……

As anyone who has met me can attest, I’m no fashionista.

I don’t wear T-shirts often. Only at the gym. I prefer polos, mostly because I’ve got a rather fat neck and T’s usually make me feel uncomfortable. I only buy one brand of jeans (and one cut within that brand) because I know they’re comfortable, durable and I don’t think they make me look like a gimp. Having said that, though, I do pay more for those jeans than what I would for most other brands because I know that they’re comfortable, durable and that I’ll be happy every time I pull them on.

I value a good body of work. I don’t like the idea of musicians being famous just because they were found on the internet, as if the method by which they were discovered is part of the fame itself. Have they got substance? Have they got the ability and the patience to replicate what might be one good first-up effort?

Has there been an artist emerge in the last 5 years with the genuine potential to be a staple of the music business for the next 30 years? Possibly. I hope so. It’s been great to discover and grow with artists as they’ve emerged and grown since my adolescence. Sometimes older artists are looked at with a degree of cynicism, as old fashioned, but I tend to think the slower pace of the music industry 20 years ago allowed them to develop and for us to develop with them. I’d gladly pay three figures to see Metallica, U2, Steve Vai, Radiohead, Prince (for whom I’d almost go four figures if the seats were right), Eminem or Eric Clapton. I wouldn’t even cash a voucher to see Lady Gaga or whoever-the-kid-who-replaces-her-is.

Like many of you, I tend to find something that I like and stick to it. It’s not that I’m not open to other things. It’s not as if I’m closed to the idea of change. But when I find something that delivers the fundamentals of what I’m after, I’ll stick with that product or brand.

When I find something that delivers the fundamentals and the intangibles that give me a really pleasurable experience, there’s a very good chance that I’m sold for life. That’s pretty much what I’ve had in my experience with Saab.

Monday Night Snippets – Juddy Edition!!!

September 21, 2010 in Saabology

Thanks for your patience today – it’s been a heck of a busy day. Heaps of work, a funeral, the re-commencement of Bootcamp and the biggest award in Australian Football – the Brownlow Medal.

Vale Jans van Goor – grandmother to one of my best friends, graceful and courageous matriarch and maker of the best Dutch almond cakes you’d ever taste.

——

Speaking of Dutchies……

Some car clubs just get together for dinner and chardonnay, others do car stuff. You need both, I guess.

Saab Club Nederland did one of those activities that makes active Saab Clubs great. They organised a testing and inspection day for members. Dutch cars, like many others in Europe, have to undergo an annual inspection. This wasn’t an official inspection. Actually, it was much tougher.

I enjoyed the Tweet about it from yesterday:

Saabclub inspection day has come and gone. Weeping men everywhere. The master technicians were relentless seeing every wrong detail.

There’s some video of it below, which you should watch if only to hear the 900 exhaust at 1:10.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxgtljmRhRE

——

The guy who gave me the distinct pleasure of attending Swedish Car Day in Boston last month is Pierre Belperron. His son Pascal likes to drive cars quickly on roads where most of us would exercise quite a bit of caution – rallying.

And of course, he likes to get his rally on in a Saab.

Pascal rallying in Saab 9000

That’s Pascal racing in a hill climb in Ascutney, Vermont, last Saturday. It’s an excellent photo, which you can view in full here. He’s only just bought the car and on his first run, he completed the course a full 3 seconds faster than he’d ever achieved in the 9000 and 900 he’d raced there before.

Unfortunately, on his second run, his header pipe broke off at the turbo, and in the time it took him to get the car off the circuit and stopped, the blow-torch effect coming out of the turbo melted everything in the right front of the engine bay, including the main wiring harness.

Pascal employed a little ingenuity and rigged up a temporary harness with the hope of getting the car back home to New Hampshire. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the full 100 mile journey home, falling short of the garage by 100 feet!

Fast and clever – a winning combination.

Pascal – we hope the car’s back out there soon!

——

OK, to the Brownlow Medal. I can’t miss out on commemorating this occasion (if only just for you, Mr Bitmead!!).

The Brownlow is the highest individual honor that a player can receive in the Australian Football League. The hot favourite for the medal was a thuggish goon player named Dane Swan, from the most hated club in the country, the Collingwood Football Club.

Instead, the surprise winner – one of only 13 men in around 80 years who has won it more than once in his career – was the Captain of the magnificent Carlton Football Club – a warrior by the name of Chris Judd.

The fact that he has the most attractive girlfriend in the AFL doesn’t hurt, either.

chris-judd-10920246a

Congratulations, Juddy!!!!

I was so happy I did a SnoopyDance!

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRfmzPZ3Yoc

And if that’s given you a little taste for the greatest game on the entire planet, then watch this.

Tips – a goal is kicked when the ball goes untouched through the two center posts. A ‘mark’ (what you guys would call a catch) allows a player to take a kick without the pressure of being tackled. And remember, there’s no padding on these guys :-)

Monday Morning Snippets

September 20, 2010 in Saabology

Crazy work day here.

——

Swedish elections are over and I’d like to welcome Sweden to the increasingly popular land of difficult hung parliaments.

There’s an interesting profile of Prime Minister Reinfeldt here. He drives a Saab. Pity it didn’t make him more amenable to helping them out quickly and efficiently back when it mattered, but I guess he had what seemed like bigger fish to fry.

——

A German magazine has been photoshopping the Saab 9-4x – with 9-5 wheels and what is presumably a paint scheme to reflect the new Dutch ownership of the company.

saab 9-4x in orange

The article seems to be about the LA Auto Show in November, though I don’t think we’re going to see an orange 9-4x there. Snow Silver or white, maybe. Orange? No.

Thanks Till!

——

And speaking of the LA Auto Show…..

“Me” has tracked down the floorplan for the show, which will be at the LA Convention Center from November 19 to 28.

Saab will have 6,000 sq ft of space in the South Hall, wedged between Volkswagen and Suzuki. Click.

The CEO of Boston Power is very happy about the Saab 9-3 ePower to be shown at the Paris Motor Show.

This car has 27 percent more driving range per weight and volume than any other [electric] car…..she said. The company will test the vehicles in Sweden over the next two years, but Lampe-Onnerud said that Saab has promised to send her one.

I guess you could say that that’s the most exciting thing about the ePower. If you could make it commercially viable, then it’s not just an electric vehicle (a-la the Tesla), it’s a useful electric vehicle.

I don’t expect any full electric Saabs in the near-medium term, however, despite the enthusiasm shown by Auto Motor and Sport for their test drive of the Pure Electric Saab 9-3 Convertible. This fleet Saab are doing is a test fleet and I think it’s aimed at learning more about the tech so they can adapt it to things consumers are more accustomed or open to using already – hybrids.

——

Another Brown Saab…..

Saab 99 GLE

This 1976 Saab 99GLE was owned by Kyle W in California. He got it when he was just 12 years old and it actually survived a T-bone accident (protecting his parents at the same time), was rebuilt and stayed in the family for some considerable time.

He mentions in his email that his wife now drives a Hazelnut Saab 9-3, keeping the brown connection alive!

Hirsch Saab 9-3 for sale in Oz

September 19, 2010 in Saabology

I was surfing the Saabs for sale on the interwebs today and noticed this unique Saab 9-3.

HIrsch Saab 9-3

According to the ad description, this is one of the three original vehicles brought in by Saab Australia and modified by Hirsch Performance, Saab’s official tuning house. The other two were a 9-5 sedan (owned by a friend in Melbourne) and a 9-5 SportCombi. No other Hirsch modified vehicles have officially been sold by Saab Australia (though I do have a Hirsch ECU on my Monte Carlo :-) )

Hirsch 9-3 rear

It doesn’t seem to have the full interior treatment or as aggressive a stance as Jeff’s 9-5, but it does look pretty good. You can see that nice big Hirsch pipe out the back, venting the 250hp lump in the front.

The car’s only got 86,000kms on the clock and is priced at just $22,500 – seems pretty reasonable for the age, power and unique nature of the car.

Just thought the rest of you Aussies might want to know.

Auto Motor and Sport road test True Electric Saab 9-3

September 18, 2010 in Saabology

Saab are about to show what they’re calling the 9-3 ePower – a concept vehicle made to trial electric technology with a view to future application in road cars.

Their partner in this venture is a company called ElectroEngine and their first vehicle of note has been seen before, known as True Electric. This vehicle is different to the 9-3 ePower, though it’s based on what is basically the same technology.

Auto Motor and Sport visited ElectroEngine and got a chance to drive the True Electric Saab 9-3 Convertible. Swedes should go to Auto Motor and Sport and download the full report in PDF form. My thanks to Arild for this translation.

——

Close Encounter

Saab 9-3 True Electric. In about one year’s time, Saab can start selling electric cars that can be driven 300 km on one charge and that costs around 350000 SEK. The company Electroengine, located in Uppsala, is responsible for the flash of genius.

Electric SaabYou’ve read it before: bzzzzzzz, and then the electric car drives away! Zero emissions, zero excitement, zero reality in the world of car buyers – however, the maximum dream, weight and price. But this is not yet another test drive down the same line. Although I’m sitting in the first prototype the driving experience is so good that I would buy it directly. There is no feeling of drawbacks.

The engines don’t sound like high whining sewing machines, but make a kind of rough sound and, yes, a mechanical feeling. Directly on the drive shafts there are two large electric motors of more than 165 horsepower each! There is no gearbox and therefore not any noise from the gears. But what gives you that real feeling of desire is not really the car itself but the fact that the technology inside has taken a major leap forward compared to the electric cars I’ve previously driven. And the strange thing, or should we say symptomatic thing, is that the technology does not come from the automotive sector, but from a small technology company, who happens to be located in Uppsala: Electroengine.

Saab 9-5 base audio

September 18, 2010 in Saabology

There were some eyebrows raised in the Saab 9-5 crash photos when it came to interior shots showing what some thought might be the base level audio system.

This is the photo in question….

Saab 9-5 offset crash

That does look incredibly spartan, doesn’t it?

Remember, though, that a lot of these crash test vehicles are pre-production cars that aren’t necessarily built up with full production spec equipment.

The base radio is, in fact, somewhat similar to the one above, but it fills the space a lot better and sounds pretty good, too.

From the build-your-Saab site:
Saab 9-5 base radio

So there you go.

With thanks to Engström, via comments.

Saab 9-5 crash photos

September 18, 2010 in Saabology

These two cars were displayed at a safety exhibition in Stockholm yesterday. Our historic rally team guru, Jörgen T, was there and captured these images.

The cars were crashed at 60km/h with a 50% offset.

It looks like there’s an emergency vehicle from ANA Specialbilar in there as well….

Just Saab Road Rally – October 10

September 18, 2010 in Saabology

rally plate just saabI know we’ve got a number of Saab owners from Ohio that check in here regularly, so I figured a few of you might be interested in the road rally being hosted by Just Saab, from Cincinnati.

This looks like a great family event and I look forward to a follow-up report on how things went. It’s great to see it being intitiated by a dealer, too.

Just Saab are one of the few Saab dealerships to own a Spyker vehicle. They hope to have it out on the day, and perhaps a 9-5 or two as well.

——

The rally is on Sunday, October 10, 2010.

It starts from Just Saab, Cincinnati, located at 6323 Madison Road, Madisonville.

Check-in Opens at 10:00 AM and there’s a driver’s briefing at 10:30 AM. The first car will drive off at 11:00 AM.

The rally is limited to the first 30 entrants and is restricted to Saabs only. Right now, they have around 20 entrants, so there are just 10 places left.

Anyone wishing to participate: Please register by e-mail to AJ Murphy on ajm@justsaab.com by Sept. 30th

——

What is the Just Saab Road Rally?

A road rally is a driving tour in the country, on public roads where a group of people compete in a very casual contest of navigational and driving skills. Any street legal vehicle can be entered into the rally.

At least two people are needed in a vehicle, a driver and a navigator, although additional passengers are allowed. All participants in the vehicle are known as a “team.” Shortly before the rally begins, all teams are assembled for a general briefing on the course, the rules and any safety concerns that may need to be addressed. The teams are then lined up and released onto the course at one minute intervals. Saab rallies are held rain or shine.

As each team leaves the “gate” they receive a “Rally Packet” that includes directions and tour questions.

The directions might say, for example: “ 1. Follow current road through two stop signs and turn right at traffic light. 2.Turn right after SRIP (Sign Reading in Part) Eagle Creek”. By following these directions, the teams will work their way to the final destination.

There will also be tour questions that will be typical for the route. For example: “Who lives at 2934 Wolf Run Road?” As each team drives up Wolf Run Road, they need to look for the correct mailbox and write down the name posted on the mailbox. Five points are awarded for each correct answer.

All of our rallies have at least one scheduled “Pit Stop” which is a predesignated spot on the route where you can get out and stretch your legs and take a bathroom break.

Our rallies are designed in such a way that no matter what you are driving, the car does not hold a competitive edge. High speed is not important. The objective is to cross the finish line after accumulating the correct number of miles to traverse the course in the correct amount of time as determined by the Rally Master.

The winner is determined by time and mileage combined with the number of correct answers to the questions

The objective of the rally is twofold. First, is to have an enjoyable drive in your Saab through the country while viewing the beautiful land where we live. Second, is to score points in order to be eligible to win prizes after the rally. At the conclusion of the rally, the scores are tallied and prizes are awarded to the top scoring teams.

Press Release: Saab’s product offensive continues (Paris Motor Show)

September 17, 2010 in News

2010 Paris Motor Show: Saab Highlights

——

  • Public debut: Saab 9-3 ePower, first EV from Saab
  • Class-leading 119 g/km CO2 emissions from latest Saab 9-3 diesels
  • New BioPower, diesel and gasoline engines expand Saab 9-5 line-up

Trollhättan, Sweden: Since the re-birth as an independent company just seven months ago, Saab has launched the all-new 9-5 sedan, concentrated all facilities in Sweden, ramped up production, rebuilt the global sales network, and formed new strategic business partnerships.

Looking ahead, there will be two more new products to launch in the next 12 months. Saab’s business plan is on track. In short, the future for Saab Automobile has never looked brighter.

On the stand at this year’s Paris Motor Show, zero-emissions driving and class-leading low CO2 levels are among the eco-benefits on offer from Saab.

Taking center stage and making its public debut, the unique Saab 9-3 ePower is an all-electric version of the 9-3 SportCombi. It is Saab’s first step towards developing an all-electric vehicle and a test fleet of 70 cars will begin user trials in Sweden early next year.

On sale now are the latest 180 hp/132 kW 2.0TTiD Saab 9-3 Sport Sedans, which deliver a class-leading CO2 rating of only 119 g/km. More powerful, two-stage turbocharging is standard for all diesel models, while fuel economy and emissions are improved an average by10 percent across the entire range,

Saab also extends it market leadership in biofuel applications with the introduction of a 220 hp/162 kW, 2.0-liter BioPower engine for the new Saab 9-5 sedan. A more powerful, 190 hp/140 kW, 2.0-liter turbo diesel and a rightsized, 180 hp/132 kW, 1.6-liter gasoline turbo further extend the 9-5’s powertrain line-up.

Saab 9-5 amongst best used car purchases

September 17, 2010 in News

UPDATE – the perils of working with Googletrans. It seems this report was made by Folksam themselves. It was merely reported by Teknikens Varld. Auto Motor and Sport reported on it too.

This post has been changed to reflect the initial error.

——

There are a number of companies who measure various automotive metrics and report on them. Depending on the criteria used, these can be good measuring sticks for consumers to evaluate a possible purchase.

Typically, however, those studies only measure one thing – safety, reliability, customer satisfaction, etc.

Folksam, on this occasion, have combined data from annual vehicle inspections with their own safety data to build a list of the best buys in the Swedish second-hand vehicle market.

Data examined was for 395 models manufactured between the 1990s and 2006. To qualify for this “best list”, cars had to have a five-star Euro NCAP rating, the highest scores in “How safe is your car” survey, have an electronic stability control system as standard, whiplash protection, and be at least 25 percent better than the average car in annual car inspection statistics.

Applying that criteria, they slimmed the list from 395 models to just seven.

And the winners are:

Honda Civic (2006)
Lexus IS (2006)
Saab 9-5 (2004-2006)
Toyota Avensis (2005-2006)
Toyota Prius (2004-2006)
Toyota Camry (2001-2003)
Volvo S40/V50 (2004-2006)

——

A lot of people started panning the Saab 9-5 around that era because it was an old model with no replacement on the near-term horizon.

The good thing about that generation of 9-5, however, is that it was a rock solid car and by this time, it had its bugs ironed out and was fantastic buying. It’s no surprise at all that it would turn up on this list.

Thanks to Johan P for the tip!

Electric Saab 9-3 to show in Paris

September 17, 2010 in News

TTELA write that the ElectroEngine Saab 9-3 will be showing at the Paris Auto Show next month.

Right now, there are 10 electric test vehicles in the hands of various companies and government agencies in Sweden. That test fleet will be boosted by another 70 vehicles in the hands of selected private customers later this year (pick me, pick me!!).

In the meantime, Saab and ElectroEngine will be showing off the vehicles at the Paris Auto Show….

- Yes, this is of course a technology concept. It’s about showing off technology that can be used in vehicles [that follow],” says chief engineer Mats Fägerhag.

TTELA point out that this is not Saab’s first “green” concept to go on show. They’ve had the BioHybrid convertible and the E100 BioPower concept, along with others in other countries. They also had a hand in powertrain development for the upcoming Chevy Volt and Opel Ampera vehicles that have gone from concept to (pre)production.

All of that, however, hasn’t led to a production ‘green’ vehicle for Saab – yet.

It is clear that Saab, with extensive expertise in the field, will soon have its own options in the area to show off.

- We do not comment on future products, but there is news [still to come] for both the short and long term,” says Mats Fägerhag.

The Paris Auto Show is on from October 2-17.

Saab are not expected to have anything substantially new to look at, though they will premiere new, lower emissions versions of their 9-3 range and of course, the 2011 Saab 9-5.

There is some hope that they might also announce some form of new technology partnership(s), however this is still just conjecture and hopeful expectation at this point.

Thanks Tobias, for the tip!
