Who is a typical Saab 9-5 buyer – really?

September 15, 2010 in Editorial

Whilst Saab enthusiasts here at SU seem to be pretty pleased with the new Saab 9-5 – and rightly so – there are only a handful of us who are likely to go out and actually pick one up. That tells me that we’re a demographic that either a) isn’t in the financial position to do so, and/or b) likes the 9-5 but doesn’t consider it the type of car that we’d necessarily buy for ourselves.

The 9-5 carries with it a lot of Saab DNA. This is not an issue at play for the vast majority of people. But it does play in a segment that’s new for Saab – the large executive-size car market. Even if we account for the size of what might be regarded as Saab’s largest cars to date, the 9000 hatch and 9-5 wagon, this is a bigger car and therefore, a new segment for Saab.

And that might be one reason as to why the uptake amongst Saab enthusiasts could be regarded as slower than what some might expect.

And if you take a look at Saab’s print advertising so far, it certainly looks like it’s tailored to a non-traditional Saab viewer. It’s certainly been poorly received amongst traditional Saaby types, accustomed as we are to seeing certain things in the ads we like.

I heard an interesting story from a dealer earlier this week. In his opinion, the new Saab 9-5 is going to sell mostly to either new or returning owners to the brand. That is, people who will trade in a car from a different brand. He thinks it’ll only be a relatively minor number of buyers who come in trading an earlier 9-5.

That’s how his test drives so far have been panning out, too. Customers coming in to try the car out for themselves are parking Audis and Peugeots in the carpark (yes, he’s in Europe). There was a high degree of interest from Saab owners at the launch they held for the Saab 9-5, but the majority of people who have come in since don’t currently own a Saab. They might have before, but they don’t own one now.

He even related a story where an Audi driver gave it a good look over at a stop light and decided to linger a little longer. The driver, in an Audi A6, changed from a turning lane at an intersection to the straight lane in order to follow the 9-5 our friend was driving.

I’m pleased to know that we have some new 9-5 owners amongst our ranks already and that more are waiting for the car to be delivered. But I also acknowledge that the tradition for Saab has been smaller cars, and others might be waiting for those to come along.

The new Saab 9-5 was designed under GM’s watch and I have a feeling it was intended as an expansionist model all along. I know Victor Muller has placed a verbal emphasis on getting old Saab customers back, but I’m not sure that was the aim of this car – and I hasten to add that I’m not sure it should be the primary aim, either.

Saab do need to engage the interest of new potential customers and the 9-5 car is a very worthwhile car to do it with. Having new product does engage people, most times simply because it’s new. Having a new non-traditional product can bring in some new blood and a return to tradition for subsequent models can retain the old guard. Saab’s future product line looks like it’s aimed that way.

I’m not trying to discourage people from considering the 9-5, by the way. It’s a cracker of a car and is well worth your time and attention.

This is just an acknowledgement of a set of circumstances and the trends seen by one dealer so far. Maybe some other dealers have some commentary they can contribute as to what they’ve seen so far? (You can use a nom-de-blog if you wish).

Saab 95 – “Ol Blue” with Saabo in tow

September 14, 2010 in Saabology

It’s with great pleasure that I’m showing you these images today. These are from Swedish Car Day, which I was fortunate enough to attend a few weeks ago in Boston.

As with the Saab Sonett V4 that I showed last week, the Saab 95 below is owned by one of the technicians at Charles River Saab. His name is Peter Maitland, and once again, it’s nice to know your tech loves the brands as much (or more) than you do!

And just like Ralph’s V4, this Saab 95 and Saabo won an award at SCD – Best in Show! You’ll see why below.

——

Ol’ Blue is a 1968 Saab 95 purchased by Peter Maitland in 2002 in Butler PA, while Peter was working for Saab Cars USA. The previous owner had the car nine years and had only driven it 100 miles! Prior to that, it was owned by Jack Ashcraft in Oregon, where it had been driven since new. Under Ashcraft’s ownership, the 95 had been repainted once, the original Husar Blue, and the interior had been reupholstered.

1968 Saab 95

Improvements that Peter has made include installation of a Jack Lawrence high output motor and induction system (good for 120 bhp), Deluxe model dash and gauges, new wiring harness, wheels, rebuilt Sonett transmission (selected for its taller gearing), striping and decals on its flanks, front air dam and an XM radio tucked away in the glove box. Peter has driven the car 50,000 miles (true total mileage on the car is unknown), including to the 2004 Saab Owners Convention in Washington state. It was on the return trip east from that SOC that Peter stopped in Iowa to purchase his Saabo.

A consumer story

September 14, 2010 in Editorial

A long one, and not directly Saab related.

This is a Mac vs PC story, but not one of those Mac vs PC stories (and if you turn it into one of those Mac vs PC discussions in comments then I’ll shut it down faster than you can say “Australia don’t need no scrappage scheme”).

The following happened over the course of the last week and I’m sharing it here in the hope that people involved in buying stuff can deal with people involved in selling stuff in a better way. And vice versa. It might just apply to Saab customers and dealers or service staff, which is why I’m posting it here (also, I don’t have anywhere else to post it).

——

The purchase.

Last week, we finally decided that we needed a new computer. The new machine would live downstairs and would be used primarily by Mrs Swade to check her emails, store her photos (used for paintings), play her music and Skype her family in Canada.

Because she’s used to operating a PC, I bought a Gateway DX series machine, which had pretty decent specs for what she’d need and a 20% discount on the normal price. It was a box-only purchase, as we had our own 20-inch HD monitor (this is relevant).

I got the machine home, spent some considerable time moving furniture around and hooking the machine up with its various cords and ports. We fired it up and all was well. I downloaded iTunes, Firefox and configured Skype.

The computer was left on and unattended and as computers do, it went into sleep mode. When I tried to awaken the machine, the screen lit up but all the icons were missing. You couldn’t do anything with it except re-start it and carry on from there. I tried adjusting various settings, including screensavers and power-save modes, but the machine insisted on the same re-start process to get things moving.

That was problem #1.

Saab 900 Enduro bound for Targa Tasmania?

September 14, 2010 in Saabology

This is one that’s of special interest to me, being here in Tassie.

The full story appears on Saabworld.net.

In short, one of the Melbourne-based Saab owners who posts there called into his mechanic’s workshop and saw this on the hoist….

Saab 900 Enduro

It’s a Saab 900 Enduro, one of only 12 built by Saab Australia back when the 900 was still pretty new, in 1980. The Enduro version had a rather radical (to say the least) body kit, water injection, an uprated wastegate (17psi boost!), improved suspension, better instrumentation as well as phat Simmons wheels and appropriate rubber to fill out those huge wheel arches.

Another Enduro, in non-racing garb….

Saab 900 Enduro

Only around half of the Enduros originally built by Saab Australia are thought to still be in existence and are highly collectable.

What aroused my curiosity straight away in the top photo is the name “Kingsway Motors” on the back. That was before I noted “Hobart” written underneath. Kingsway was the celebrated Saab dealership here in Hobart, one of the best dealerships in Australia and winner of several Saab Service Awards.

According to the post at SaabWorld, this 900 Enduro is being prepped for an appearance in next year’s Targa Tasmania, our top-shelf tarmac rally, which is held in April each year.

I would love to know more about this car.

Thanks to Wulf for the tip.

Saab 9-5 looks good in red

September 14, 2010 in Saabology

These popped up in my Flickr Feed this morning, and then I noticed there were a couple of comments on them, too. It seems they’ve also popped up in comments, but they’re worth bringing to the front page as the photos are great and the car looks fantastic.

I’m not usually a fan of large cars that are painted red. But this is winning me over…..

Click. From Flickr.

From comments, I believe the photographers name is Anders. Great work, Anders!

ex-Abbott Racing Saab for sale

September 14, 2010 in Saabology

It’s not often a racing Saab becomes available for sale, especially one with this level of pedigree.

Abbott Racing are a famed Saab tuning and performance workshop in Essex, England. They’re well known in their own country for all manner of Saab performance enhancement, but probably most known outside England for their fantastic Viggen Rescue Kit – a combination of parts that makes the Viggen more controllable and predictable, without taking away it’s wild nature.

Abbott Racing, as the name suggests, were also involved in many different levels of motorsport over the years. According to the advertisment, this Saab was raced by Lionel Abbott in the British Touring Car Championship.

The current owner had it restored to its former glory but now lives in France and has barely had time to take it to the track. Hence the sale.

  • 2.3L low compression Carlson engine with 320bhp (adjustable)
  • New modified gearbox with final drive set to max 150mph.
  • All new adjustable suspension plus two set wheels/tyres.
  • Fully welded body with substantial integral roll cage picking up all suspension points.
  • Torsional stiffness approx 17,500 ft lbs giving it handling characteristics way beyond any modified road car.
  • Weight approx 1050 kilos giving approx 305bhp/tonne.
  • Custom built induction with T4 turbo, large crossflow intercooler and Water/Methanol injection.
  • Car is being sold including its Galvanised tilt bed trailer, with wheel carrier, and two covers (dust and weather)
  • Click here for the full advertisment.

Thanks to Greg for the tip!

SaabRobz gets published – and crashes (Saab Safety)

    September 13, 2010 in Saabology

If you’re a regular Saab-watcher on Flickr then you’ll have heard of SaabRobz. In fact, if you’ve been around SU and TS for long enough then you’ll be familiar with the name, too, as I’ve featured photos by SaabRobz a number of times over the years.

One of his specialties is collected in a group on Flickr called “Saab Junkyard”. The German seller of old Saab bits, Skandix, found this group recently and decided to publish a post on it, including a great slideshow highlighting the images that SaabRobz has captured over the last few years.

It’s amazing to see how many old Saabs have been junked in the Swedish countryside over the years. You feel like you want to pick one up, bring it home and care for it.

It’s great to see the meticulous long-term work of people like SaabRobz etc, being noticed by companies like Skandix and others.

Share it around – and make sure you check out the slideshow they’ve posted and get a look at all them old Saabs.

    ——

    Some more news from SaabRobz…..

This is his beautiful Saab 9000: click.

Unfortunately, this car is no more. It gave its life to save his after he tried out the moose test for himself recently.

I crashed with a moose this weekend, not a nice experience…. the airbag went off and i crashed into the ditch. The rescue personnel had to cut the roof to get me out of the car (they take no chances if it’s a possible neck injury, they told me)

My Saab 9000 is history, but I am very happy that I drove a SAAB! With a smaller car I may not be alive today.

It’s sad news (especially for the moose!) but its great that SaabRobz lived to drive another day.

Safety. No-one does it better than Saab.

    Saab 9-5 review from Ireland

    September 13, 2010 in Saabology

When I attended the Saab 9-5 launch back in June, I was there with members of the Irish and German automotive press corps.

The 9-5 took a few punches from the Irish in terms of driveability, primarily because like the English types we’ve wanted to stone to death heard from recently, they seemed to be funneled into the base model diesel quite a lot.

Saab has just hosted another round of press drives in Ireland, giving access to a wider variety of cars to a wider variety of journos and it seems they were a bit happier testing the car on home turf.

    From Drive Magazine……

So, what to make of the 9-5, the first car to be launched by ‘New Saab?’ Well, it would be easy to give it the curate’s egg verdict; good in parts, but ultimately not up to the lofty standards set by its major German competitors.

But that’s just not right. True, there are flaws but it’s good enough, more than good enough, to compete with its head held high and it has an easy likability about it, that few if any other premium cars have.

Now, with journos having access to more varieties of the 9-5, you might think they’re writing about an Aero there. But it’s not. In fact, it’s the same 2.0 TiD Linear that their compatriots liked, but just not as much.

I hear from a contact there in Ireland that they had extremely good feedback from customers during a recent test drive campaign there, too, with over 150 test drives taken and a lot of happy customers as a result.

We get awfully picky about this car – for good and noble reasons, mind you – but any considerations to perceived flaws should not be viewed as the end of the world, as can often be the case in comments here. The baseline for any considerations should rightly be “This is one heck of a good car, whether it be a new start for Saab, or not.”

Thanks to Emmet for the heads up!

Trading Black for Black – and loving it

    September 13, 2010 in Saabology

Via email from Dan P….. this one’ll show up in SCNA’s September numbers :-)

    ——

Just dropping in to inform you one 2010 9-3X was purchased last night from True Saab in Downers Grove, IL, as a replacement for a Turbo X which proved to be woefully impractical for its female owner. I understand this dealer had recently gone through some dramatic ownership changes, and I want to report that the new owners and staff are exceedingly friendly, helpful, and approachable. They worked pretty hard to put together a great package and ease her nerves. Kudos to True Saab!

Anyway on with the 9-3X (and one pic of the Turbo X traded in):

    The outgoing Turbo X…….

    And the incoming Saab 9-3x…..

And from another angle, and you’re darn right I want fries with that……

The family garage……grainy at night, but very, very nice.

A further report from Dan today says “It is a great car, I’m very VERY impressed with it.”

I was impressed with the Saab 9-3x when I drove it in Sweden, too. It seems to give the SportCombi body a new sense of purpose.

    I’d have one tomorrow, easy.

Spyker Squadron finish 7th at Silverstone

    September 13, 2010 in News

SILVERSTONE, September 12, 2010 – Peter Dumbreck and Tom Coronel finished in seventh place in today’s Autosport 1000 KM of Silverstone, the final round of the 2010 Le Mans Series season.

You can read the full report here. But this little tidbit is pretty important….

In his final stint Dumbreck pushed hard to keep the BMW Team Schnitzer car behind him. With Spyker Squadron eventually finishing one place ahead of the BMW it also means that Spyker has taken third in the constructors championship, ahead of BMW, Aston Martin and Lamborghini.

A podium finish in the championship!!! It just goes to show the exceptional reliability of this car, which has finished every race this year.

Congratulations Spyker Squadron and here’s to an even better 2011 in the Le Mans Series.

    Monday morning snippets

    September 13, 2010 in Saabology

It feels good to be back in the saddle. Did I miss much?

    ——

Whilst I actually like the Porsche Panamera, I know that a lot of people out there think it looks worse than a bashed crab.

Saabers of such a mindset should take heart, then, when hearing that Porsche sold 22,500 Panameras in the model’s first full year on the market. If there’s room out there for 22,500 bashed crabs, there’s got to be room for 45,000 beautiful Saabs.

    ——

Audi seem to be taking the BMW route of building every variant possible of every model they make, albeit without forcing new niches that people may not really want.

The new A7 Sportback might be the answer to the Saab 9-5 hatchback question that I’m sure a few people are asking.

    Yes they could.

    ——

It’s a bit late for this one, but a car show on Sunday in Connecticut was to feature not only a collection of beautiful, shiny, valuable things, but also a collection of dirty and dusty ‘barn finds’.

Believe it or not…..The eight old clunkers were carefully selected from a large field of applicants and included in the display is a 1965 1968? Saab 96 that sat for 30 years.

    ——

Saab 9-5s keep arriving around the US, like this one in 100% Saab‘s local dealer in Lubbock, Texas…..

……and this one in Baton Rouge, LA.

Warning: Listening to this song by Andy Rupert may hypnotise you into test driving a Saab. Or acting like a chicken. Or both (test driving a chicken?)

    2011 Saab 9-5 US pricing

    September 11, 2010 in News

NADA guides has published 2011 Saab 9-5 pricing for the US market:

    • 4dr Sdn Aero XWD – MSRP $49,565
    • 4dr Sdn Turbo4 – MSRP $38,525
    • 4dr Sdn Turbo4 Premium – MSRP $43,435

I don’t know if this is official yet, as the 2010 price was around $47.5K but then that was a one-model-only range.

It’s good to see four different models on offer now.

You can click through to NADA for the equipment listings. I’m going to wait for a US press release before getting tied to them

    ——

This weekend’s a travel weekend once again. I’m in Melbourne and had a great dinner last night with some SU regulars – Turbin, Mike900, Flygirl, Sab, AlAero and SimonP. Fantastic!

Saab jobs in Trollhattan and what it means for growth

    September 11, 2010 in News

I received the following from a guy named Anders, who lives in Sweden. Anders also works in the automotive industry in Sweden and has done for 10 years now. I won’t mention his employer in the interests of preserving his anonymity, but it does seem that he knows what he’s on about.

Anders has provided the translation below, from TTELA, and some thoughts based on his experience in the car biz as to what the story implies – which is all good for Saab.

    ——

SAAB could have a second shift in the factory by the end of this year

Saab Automobile Managing Director Jan Åke Jonsson talks about substantial recruitments at the factory in Trollhättan. If these are not done, the planned increase of the volumes planned for 2011 will not be possible.

“We must launch a second shift. But we have not decided whether it will be late this year or early next year. It depends on how major markets develop” says Jan Åke Jonsson.

It’s about at least a couple hundred blue collar jobs.

This autumn we also a need to hire 50 new white collars [as well].

    ***************

The following are my interpretation and notes:

    • What is interesting is that he says (at least in how he is quoted in Swedish) that there will be a second shift, the question is only at what point of time.
    • This implies that the order intake must be good (better then what we can see in the registration statistics)….. so good that running the factory on one shift is not possible nor to staff up the first shift and increase the rate of production.
    • I do not know at what time the second shift was planned in the business plan, but it is reassuring that they are considering it/have decided to take it on.
    • Taking on a second shift is a very big decision, you do not want to make people redundant later on (bad press, and it is people’s livelihood), it is not something you just do without good reason.
    • If JAJ was uncertain of the second shift, had any doubts, I do not think that he would talk about it to the media about it!
