Report – Saab working on diesel hybrid

October 26, 2010 in News

A reporter from Automobil magazine in Sweden has apparently sighted a hybrid in testing while he was in Trollhattan testing the new Saab 9-5.

The vehicle he saw was a very looking Saab 9-3 sedan and the reporter claims he saw a lot of battery packs in the back when the trunk was opened.

Automobile has just visited Trollhättan. The mission was to return the 9-5 Aero we had on test. As a bonus, we saw a diesel hybrid.

After a pleasant drive from Stockholm the writer and Oscar Carlquist arrived in Trollhättan. We will return the test car and go back to Stockholm in our own car. It is good manners to return a test car with a full tank, so we drive to a roadside petrol station affiliated to the factory. We are not alone, there are 9-5s and is 9-3s everywhere.

A 9-3 catches my attention because it is towed to the pump by a 9-5. When the car is to be refueled the co-driver goes out and open the luggage compartment. I notice a hefty collection of batteries and units, but my camera phone is not fast enough so I can take a picture.

I walk closer and see the sign in the rear side window. “Hybrid” it says, and now things get really interesting. When fueling is completed, the car is started and it becomes clear that there is a diesel engine that is being adapted for hybrid technology. I look up the car in the car register and indeed it is a diesel. It has automatic transmission and came into service in April 2007.

The development is a longstanding one. Already in November 2007 a Senska Dagbladet’s reporter spotted a white 9-3 with the combination of diesel and hybrid.

“We are developing hybrid technology for different types of engines,” said Magnus Wall, Director of the Development Laboratory at that time to SvD.

Since then much has happened with Saab. But it is gratifying to note that Saab proceeds with this project. Given how long the work has been ongoing they should soon be ready. It would be exciting if Saab could be at the forefront now. The world’s first diesel hybrid will be the Peugeot 3008 HYbird4 which goes on sale in 2011. Join now, Saab!

OK, so it’s only a sticker, but still…..

What was most interesting is that when the driver started the car, it was quite apparent that it was a diesel engine under the hood, meaning Saab could well be testing out hybrid technology in combination with their own frugal, low-emissions diesel powerplants.

Whilst petrol hybrids have been reasonably well received and appreicated for their mileage improvement, diesel hyrbids offer an even greater frugality promise and would surely be a great seller in European markets.

Thanks to Dippen and Arild for the tip!

The Saab Fall Festival at New Salem Saab

October 26, 2010 in Saabology

The following is a letter from Darryl Carl at New Salem Saab, hosts of this year’s first Saab Fall Festival.

Before I get to that, though, you should also check out all the images at the following galleries. I’ve reproduced a few from each after the letter:

——

Letter from Darryl Carl, New Salem Saab

Dear Everyone who participated in the Saab Fall Festival,

We here at New Salem Saab and NESA would like to extend a heart felt thank you for your attendance this past Saturday. In addition we couldn’t have done such an event without the folks at the New England Saab Association and Goldwing Saab parts. With 120 Saabs and nearly 200 people, we were delighted in the response for what’s now to be called the 1st annual Saab Fall Festival.

This was completed in 30 days and through social media advertising only! Saab people are truly modern in their means of gathering and sending information.

The day was long and busy from start to finish. The weather held off, thankfully. When I awoke it was drizzling and the weatherman had changed his mind. It was forecasted for sunny and 60, what we got was cool and overcast with some late peaks of sun, but no rain.

Saab Fall Festival at New Salem Saab

I would like to mention a few stories that I picked up. Gary Wolfe from Montana was here for the show. Now this is a page out of the Saab community’s book. Gary was in NYC for some business and had a day to kill while he was there. He learned of the Saab Fall Festival and emailed me and called me to see what could be done to get him from there to here. Gary also posted on Saab United seeking a ride from Manhattan to Albany for the show. Gary was later contacted by a Saaber in NYC who after some discussion kindly drove into Manhattan to pick him up and drove him all the way to the event and back! Gary and I were able to speak some here and I was very happy, as was he, that the Saab community allowed him to attend the event so far from home. Gary I hope you enjoyed yourself while you were here!

Saab 9-3 TTiD comparison table

October 25, 2010 in Saabology

The following table was compiled by “Me” (a regular commenter here at SU) in response to the following questions by Jeff, in comments:

So what cars is this 9-3 TTiD competing against? Or rather, who else has something with less than 120g/km?

Here’s the table, which shows figures obtained from German data about the respective models listed. As you can see, the new low-emissions Saab 9-3 TTiD emitting just 119g of CO2 per kilometer is pretty much in a class of its own when it comes to delivering proper power with sub-120g emissions.

Saab Ad – Damn the masses

October 25, 2010 in Saabology

This new ad was spotted by Erich G in a magazine called Fast Company.

Saab 9-5 damn the masses

Interesting that they’ve chosen to show the car with a small spoiler on the rear. This is a Saab Accessory (part #13308277).

The text of the ad is reproduced below:

Saab 9-5 damn the masses text

I know this is going to be taken as a cue for people to cry about about the perceived lack of ‘big’ advertising and to some extent, I agree. I don’t know their strategy of if some of that ‘big’ market advertising is waiting in the wings, perhaps for more – and more varied – stock to arrive at dealerships.

What I do know, however, is that I like this ad’s text a lot more than I liked previous efforts.

Kudos.

New cars for the Saabs United Historic Rally Team

October 25, 2010 in Rally Team

It’s been a little since we updated the SUHRT website but that doesn’t mean the team has been idle.

Far from it, in fact!

The last few months have seen the guys add two more cars to the garage. The question, now, is which historic rally cars these ones will made into replicas of.

First, to the two new cars.

Jörgen picked up this blue 99Turbo 2-door notchback:

Saab 99 Turbo 2-door

And Vladimir Antonov purchased this green 99Turbo, which is also a 2-door:

Saab 99 Turbo

Both cars will be rally-prepared eventually and the team is currently deciding which historic Saab rally cars to re-create.

The options are as follows:

1. Stig Blomqvist RAC 1979 Red
2. Stig Blomqvist Swedish Rally 1981 Blue
3. Stig Blomqvist Swedish Championships 1980 Black
4. Ola Strömberg Swedish Championships 1980 White

It’s definitely going to be a busy winter for the guys as they prepare these two cars.

Which ones would you choose?

Kudos to Bay Saab

October 25, 2010 in News

I enjoyed reading this story today.

Maybe it’s not that extraordinary, but it was really heartening for me to read that the owner of Bay Saab, which is part of a multibrand dealership in Norfolk, Virginia, has shuffled his lineup and in the process, has dropped Chevrolet but kept Saab.

It’s official: Bay Automotive, which sold GM cars for 72 years, gave up its Chevrolet dealership.

Bay’s Kia and Saab showrooms, however, remain open. So does the Chevy service business at the Norfolk dealership on North Military Highway, said its president, Walter Wilkins…..

….despite rumors of Saab’s demise as one of GM’s terminated brands, a Dutch investor has purchased Saab and has big plans for it.

“That’s part of the job we have going forward,” Wilkins said, “is to let people know it’s alive and well.”

As the article explains, the decision is more about the saturation of Chevrolet dealers in his area and the upswing with Kia, but the fact that he’s chosen to maintain and develop his Saab shop is a really encouraging sign for everyone.

People buying Saabs

October 25, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve had a few good stories come in over the weekend about people getting into new(er) Saabs over the last few weeks.

Here they are. Please click the images to enlarge.

——

From Alexander, in Nässjö, Sweden:

Saab 9-3 Vector BioPowerAfter leaving Saab last winter, I today rejoined the fantastic community of Saab. It really feels like coming home! Behind the wheel of a Saab I do belong!!

I grew up in a Saab-family with my dad working as a sales director at the local dealership. Saab runs in my blood! But last winter my grilfriend convinced me to try something different (french……), but I never really found myself enjoying my trips to work as I used to in my Saabs.

So today I picked up my new (to me, that is) Saab 9-3 Vector SportCombi 1.8t BioPower! The car has undergone some modifications such as Aero-bodykit, twinpipe stainless sport-exhaust and Hirsch-tuning to 225hp.

Very nice – and I’m home again!

——

From Michael O, also in Sweden

I just called…. to say…. I love Saab

Hi!

Just want to tell the world how happy and pleased I´m with my new 9-3 Aero biopower. I looooove it, what a perfect car!! And beautiful.

Saab forever!

——

There are no photos for this one just yet, but they’ve been promised.

This story is from ‘Nate 9-3′ and comes from comments here at SU. It deserves a spot on the front page and this is the perfect time for it.

Nate’s advice here is quite correct – get people into your Saabs.

I just took possession of a 2008 Turbo X SportCombi on Tuesday. I have been taking my friends for rides and test drives in it. Just tonight I took two friends for a test drive. The both want the SAAB! Get your people behind the wheel of your car. That is the best way to get them into the brand. Neither of these two friends of mine had even considerd SAAB before tonight.

——

Congratulations to all – and to anyone else’s who has just recently picked up a new, or not-quite-new Saab. It’s great to see people getting into something they love!

Saab Car Club of Australia – Victorian Concours D’Elegance

October 24, 2010 in Saabology

Congratulations to the participants and prizewinners at the Concours held by the Vic branch of the SCCA today.

It looks like the cars were prepared beautifully and the weather certainly played it’s part in showing them off properly.

SCCA-Vic Concours

That photo is from a guy some of you will know as SAB. Others will know him as Steve B and you can view his full album on Flickr. Steve was one of the winners on the day, taking the honors for best C900/99 with his Silver Sled.

Incidentally, that car has quite possibly the freshest engine of any Saab 900 on the planet. Steve had a brand new crate engine with zero mileage installed in the sled this week!

Other winners included

  • Roman with his 9-5 in the 9000/9-5 class.
  • Clive with his Turbo X in the NG900/9-3 class
  • Ron R with his 9-3 convertible won the People’s Choice award, and
  • Clive (again) won best car over all with his Turbo X

TurboX front

That photo is from Dave W, via Flickr.

Both albums are well worth a look and if there are more Melbournians with some photos to share from the day, please let me know via email or drop a link into comments.

Saab 9-3x on The Amazing Race

October 24, 2010 in Saabology

We mentioned during the week that the Saab 9-3x was featuring on The Amazing Race TV Show. I was pleased to find out that video is now available online.

The 9-3x does feature quite a bit in this episode, though there’s not much there to identify it by name. Still, it was great to see it feature so prominently in such a popular program.

Those sleds are cool, too.

Turbo X’s at Saab Fall Festival

October 24, 2010 in Saabology

The Saab Fall Festival at New Salem Saab went well today. Around 120 cars and 200 people came through on the day.

I’ve got a few photos through already but am waiting for a few more from Darryl at NSS before writing a full entry.

In the meantime, what’s the collective noun for a group of Turbo X’s?

A darth of Turbo X’s?

An empire of Turbo X’s?

Here are 5 of them from the Saab Fall Festival today; a rare sight to see this many together.

Norwegian Danish 9-5 road test – visual beauty

October 24, 2010 in Saabology

If you’re like me, then you probably won’t understand a single word on this video aside from ‘Saab’

And if you’re like me, it won’t make one bit of difference. The car looks and sounds fantastic (and I think they like it, too).

Vote for Saab 9-5 – Norwegian Car of the Year

October 23, 2010 in Saabology

Last year, we managed to help the Saab 9-3x win the people’s vote in the Norwegian Car of the Year poll.

I’ve mentioned this year’s poll in snippets once already, but the voting is quite close and really, a poll like this deserves a post of it’s own, doesn’t it?

Right now, the new Saab 9-5 is around 90 votes behind the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Whilst I think the Giuli’s a brilliant car (my money’s on it to win European Car of the Year), this is a result that just cannot stand without a good fight from the Saabisti.

Please head on over to Dagbladet.no and scroll down until you find the voting form. Select the Saab 9-5 from the list and press the button that says “Send Inn”.

Onwards ho!

Saab’s Winter Driving Tips

October 23, 2010 in Saabology

It’s only October, but people are already talking about winter tires and as you can see from the photo below, the weather around Trollhattan has started getting treacherous already.

Crashed Saab in Trollhattan

I’ve pubished these tips from Saab a few times over the years. It might be that a few could be updated (“I” for iPhone now? :-) ) but they’re still all relevant and it’s good information to bear in mind as you prepare your car for winter.

Winter Driving – an A to Z Guide from Saab

For drivers and their vehicles alike, winter is the most testing time of the year. Difficult driving conditions greatly increase the risk of an accident and even routine journeys can become hazardous experiences.

Scandinavian winters are among the most severe in Europe and place extreme demands on the abilities of cars and their drivers to perform reliably and safely at all times. Saab Automobile of Sweden is used to designing and building cars for such conditions and here Chief Test Engineer Torbjörn Christensson gives a seasonal A to Z guide of simple “do’s” and “don’ts” that will be useful to all car drivers.

A
Anti-freeze is the engine’s first line of defence against sub-zero conditions. But how often do you check it? For it to remain effective, the recommended strength must be at least 50%. Topping up your coolant with water only, for example, will gradually dilute the mixture. To be sure of maximum protection, do ensure the anti-freeze is checked each year, regardless of mileage, as part of the car’s service.

B
Black ice. Whilst ice and snow are obvious hazards, black ice is an almost invisible threat, especially during the onset of freezing temperatures. Beware when driving round sheltered bends or corners which are shaded from the sun, because this is where black ice is most likely to catch out the unsuspecting. A tell-tale clue you are on black ice is when all goes quiet in the car and you cannot hear any tyre noise. Do not brake or make any sudden steering inputs but do ease off the accelerator and proceed slowly and smoothly.

C
Car batteries are put to a severe test in winter due to the extra demands of running heating fans and lights. Most are now maintenance-free but do have the voltage checked, especially if the car is repeatedly used for short journeys. Consider charging the battery overnight or try to plan a longer run occasionally.

Audi Motor und Sport give the Saab 9-5 four stars!

October 23, 2010 in Saabology

It’d be easy to get negative about this report from Germany’s Auto Motor and Sport. They’re renowned for being nationalistic when it comes to their car business – and not without reason, too, the Germans make excellent cars. That’s why they’ve earned the nickname “Audi Motor und Sport”.

They’ve recently published a review of the Saab 9-5 online and whilst there are a number of phrases that would normally trigger a rant on my part, then end result has me smiling.

AMSde Saab 9-5 score

Go through their “plus and minus” section and there’s a handy advantage in the plus column, too.

Yes, they make the usual references to Opel in there and they’re jackassed ones at that. Stating that the engine should have an Opel badge on it completely overlooks the fact that Saab added the turbo magic that makes engine such a joy to drive.

Focusing on stuff like that – stuff you expect from AMS.de – would be a waste. The good news from this report is in the conclusion.
