Saab Car Club of Australia – Vic concours on tomorrow

October 23, 2010 in News

A mate in Melbourne, AlAero, has been working non-stop for the last few days getting his cars ready for this one. I’m sure I know a few other Saab Car Club of Australia members there in Melbs doing the same.

Car and Driver test the Saab 9-5 Aero

October 23, 2010 in Saabology

This test is a biggie. Car and Driver, for all its faults, is still one of the bigger buff books in the US market so it’s good coverage for Saab to have the 9-5 tested there.

And it’s a very positive test, too. If you’re one of the Saab enthusiasts who followed the saga of the Saab sale last year, you’ll know that there was plenty of goodwill amongst much of the automotive media. The business media, well, that was another matter. But the automotive press has a soft spot for Saab and that’s a foot in the door that the company desperately needs.

Car and Driver liken the Saab sale to some of the better redemption stories they’ve heard over the years. Although, it must be said, they also liken it to the classic Gen-X comedy Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and whilst I loved that movie 20 years ago, it doesn’t make me think about cars in 2010.

And therein lies the one criticism I’ll level at C&D for this test – in trying so hard to make smart jokes and GM quips, they sometime lose sight of the mission: accurately write up the Saab 9-5. That’s a small issue, though, in what is over all a good review of the 9-5. It’s just that throwaway lines about the Buick Lacrosse are so cheap and easy. It makes it look like they weren’t really trying.

They were trying, though, and setting aside my angst for a minute, I can even pull out some good quotes for you.

The Outside:

…..along comes this knockout. The taut styling invites long stares, and the aggressively tapered greenhouse and blacked-out pillars identify this as a Saab—the first in a while that doesn’t look like a ’90s model.

The inside:

Cool touches abound inside, neutralizing the sea of black plastic in which they swim….. Even widely available gadgets and functions are executed here with an extra degree of thought…… It’s comfortable inside, too. The fantastic bolstering of the front seats had some staffers suggesting that GM keep these thrones and install them in the Corvette…… What appears to be a haphazard scattering of  buttons across the center stack turns out to be highly intuitive, and specific functions are easy to locate.

On the road:

Although the 9-5 tested here is the top-of-the-line Aero model with a turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6, its speed is only middle-of-the-road. Zero to 60 in 6.3 seconds isn’t slow, but we expect a bit more from a 300-hp, $50K luxury car……

Still, power builds so quickly that, in first gear, you need to grab the paddle to upshift by 5500 rpm if  you don’t want to crash into the fuel cutoff at 6500. Turbo lag isn’t much of an issue—it’s just one continuous pull…..

Our results are a testimony to the efficacy of the (Hi Per Strut) setup, as the 9-5 was utterly free of torque steer, although all-wheel drive tends to help minimize that, too. It stuck to the skidpad with 0.89 g, a number that matches the last 335i sedan we tested. Braking from 70 mph also approaches the 335i’s, taking 173 feet, just five feet more than the BMW.

——

As I said, it’s a good test over all. They like the car right from the get-go and enhancements to come will make it even better. I’ll be interested to see what they make of the 2.0T, for example.

Head over to C&D and check it out.

FAQs that Saab should be answering

October 22, 2010 in Editorial

A rather inspirational comment appeared on Jalopnik the other day. It was on an entry entitled The Saab Family Tree.

There were no words in the comment. Just an image of a Google search where the commenter had typed in “Is Saab” and Google’s auto-complete function had entered a bunch of options based on frequent searches starting with the same words.

The theory behind this auto-complete function is as follows:

As you type, Google’s algorithm predicts and displays search queries based on other users’ search activities. These searches are algorithmically determined based on a number of purely objective factors (including popularity of search terms) without human intervention. All of the predicted queries shown have been typed previously by other Google users.

There’s another scenario where the auto-complete is populated using searches that you (or in this case, I) have entered on previous occasions, but that’s not influencing this situation. I haven’t done these searches before and as you can see, the results are similar to the Jalopnik results.

So……

What you have then, is a list of frequently asked questions about Saab. This is what people are searching for, what they’re asking about. There are the questions that Saab have to provide answers to, lest someone else provide the answer at the risk of being wrong.

I’ve repeated the “Is Saab” search from Jalopnik below, along with a couple of others. If I get time over the next few weeks, I might have to attempt a few decent answers.

“Is Saab…….”

Is Saab Google search

“Are Saab……”

Are Saab Google Search

“What Saab……”

What Saab Google Search

——

IMHO, the critical and most common questions that Saab must have responses to are:

  • Is Saab still in business?
  • Are Saab cars reliable?

The first question contributes to whether someone will even bother looking for a Saab. The second contributes to their decision making about a potential dealer visit, test drive or purchase.

Saab might look at that first question and say “Well, of course we’re still in business, we’re making cars and if they look, they’ll see our advertisements”.

They might too.

But this is the web and what people want when they do one of these searches is an answer. Saab have to provide that answer. It may not always reach the searcher, but it’s got to be there in print somewhere on an indexible page; one that’s authoritative, one that can be referred to by people from the press (who can pass that answer on before it’s even asked).

It’s the same with the second question. There are plenty of websites with industry-wide reliability data available but when it comes to Saab reliability, Saab need to be pushing their own barrow. Sure, some will think it’s biased because it’s come from the company but you back up your claims with verifiable data, linked to your claims.

These are both questions that have positive answers. Those positive answers aren’t always clear when they come from third parties, however.

They should be made clear by Saab.

Saabnet.com experiencing problems

October 22, 2010 in Troll Stuff

UPDATE: Problems persist.

An update from Scott:

Saabnet.com suffered a hard disk crash. By time I get a new hard disk, reinstall linux and all the supporting software, it’ll be probably mid week next week when it is online again.

——

Saabnet is off the air at the moment and I know regulars there might be wondering what’s going on. So I got in touch with Scott Paterson to find out, in order to pass on some reassurance that things would be OK.

Here’s the problem, from Scott via email:

On Saturday October 16th at around 4PM, the Saabnet.com server had a fatal hardware failure rending the server completely inoperable. I did have a new server machine on hand and on Sunday I loaded up Linux, Apache (web server), PHP (scripting engine), and mySQL (database engine).

On Monday, I began to reload the Saabnet.com content from backups. All went smoothly and by the end of the day, I had 95% of the site working including the bulletin boards. I’m now working on the member login script which is not working correctly.

I’m feeling optimistic I’ll be able to open the site back up to the public either late today or tomorrow, but you know how software is so it could be as long as a few more days too.

Saabnetters, rest assured the problem is being worked on and hopefully Scott will get the oldest Saab enthusiast site on the web back on air soon.

Honda beating up on Saab in advertisement

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

This post started with an ad that was spotted today in Uddevalla. The photo of that one was a bit blurry, so I’ve substituted it for another photographed at St Eriksplan train station in Stockholm by Jakob W.

Honda Saab Ad

The ad says:

Älskade Saabägare Förlåt
Vi har nog glomt att beratta om vara bilar

Which translates to:

Loved Saab owners, forgive us
We’ve probably forgotten to tell you about our cars

It should be mentioned first that this is part of a bigger “Forgive Us” campaign that Honda seem to be running. The slogan is writ large on their Swedish website. But in mentioning Saab directly, it could be understood as them taking a shot at a vulnerable competitor.

Here in Australia, this would probably be taken as being a little bit cheeky. In Sweden, however, I’m told that this attempt at beating up on what could be perceived as an injured party is quite a cultural no-no.

The guy who sent it to me, Jens, had quite a reasonable respect for Honda as a company. That respect has just been diminished a little.

But maybe I shouldn’t be mentioning any of this. Maybe I’m beating up on the little guy in doing so.

HondaBil sell the Accord (sedan and wagon), Jazz, Insight, Civic (5dr and Type R), CR-V and CR-Z in the Swedish market……. and in September 2010 they sold 352 vehicles.

Saab sold 801……….. if you only count the Saab 9-3.

New Saab 9-3 diesel road testing underway

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

The following photograph was taken by one of SU’s Swedish mates, Tim R, just outside the Airport Hotel at Landvetter Airport, Gothenburg.

As you can see, there’s a fleet of Saab 9-3′s in place there. These are cars featuring the new, low-emissions diesels that Saab announced at the Paris Auto Show last month.

Journos Testing 9-3 diesel

My guess is that we can expect to start seeing reviews in automotive magazines fairly soon. That 180hp TTiD engine is a cracker and with the new, lower CO2 figures, is now a more attractive cracker than ever. The’re going to sell a few of those, I can tell you.

And if the press guys look a little chilly…… a friend in Trollhattan reported it was -4C there yesterday! Can’t have been much warmer at Landvetter.

Gasparatos Saab 900 of DW-world.de

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

Deutsche Welle is the place to go if you want German news in English but they don’t just do news. Apparently they have a good motoring program as well, called Drive It!

This week they have a section on the program where they take a good look at a racing Saab 900. The car is owned by a guy named Nick Gasparatos.

Gasparatos 900

Gasparatos Automobile is also a Saab tuning house in Germany and this 900 is a fine example of the company’s work. It’s heavily modified but from the video, it looks like it’s a dream to drive with it’s 300hp output, fully adjustable chassis and gear settings.

The video is in English, of course, and you MUST watch it, if only to hear the sound made by the engine in this car. It’s a four cylinder symphony.

Thanks CraigSu for the tip!

Saab interactive ads in action

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

Quijote shot some quick video of a Saab ad appearing on the Miami Herald newspaper website.

For those of us who aren’t in markets where these are running, it’s good to see how it works.

Thanks Quijote!

(TGI) Friday Snippets

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

It’s been a hellish week – tonsils and the flu. A big bowl of not good. And the next few weeks are going to be about as busy as January this year, which was the busiest time I’ve ever known. I need 26 hour days.

——

Autoblog can be a bit saccharine sometimes and the comments section can be like walking through a cabbage patch full of zombies (or wannabe comedians, which can be painfully close to the same thing). In general terms, though, Autoblog does a pretty good job at covering the mainstream US car scene.

This article – in terms of recognising a moment and documenting it the right way – is pretty close to blogging perfection.

Well done, Mr Shunk.

——

What’s this? And what’s it got to do with Saab?

inflatable helmet

It’s an inflatable bike helmet, useful for those who don’t like to mess up their hair. You’re seeing it inflated in that picture, but it starts life as a collar and acts like an airbag in the event of a pending collision.

The developers – Swedish, natch – used a Saab 9-3 as part of their testing regime.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Oud3iGXWY

——

Good luck to James Sera, who’s going to try and seal the Australian Sport Sedan Championship this weekend in a Saab 9-3. Well, actually, this car is to the Saab 9-3 as Darth Vader is to humans – it’s heavily modified (700hp Chevy engine, for starters).

Dean Randle Saab 9-3 racer

The car is actually built and owned by Dean Randle of Swedish Prestige, in Melbourne. A lot of Melbourne visitors would be familiar with Dean’s work. He actually looked over my Viggen for me when I bought it back in 2005. A great guy with a great workshop.

——

One of Australia’s elder statesmen in the music scene, guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, toured Sweden recently.

Whilst in Mellerud, he was set up with a new Saab 9-5 TiD by the local dealer, Roybil. Apparently he loved the car so much he insisted on driving himself the full 150km to Landvetter airport in Gothenburg when it came time to leave.

Tommy Emannuel Saab 9-5

It looks like enjoyed himself…..

Tommy Emannuel Saab 9-5

And to close the snippets for today, here’s a little bit of Tommy’s work. It’s always incredible to see someone so in tune with a musical instrument, like there’s no separation between them. Great stuff.

Caption Contest

October 22, 2010 in Saabology

Robin M, our unofficial Saab ambassador for Great Britain, recently fitted a Hirsch grille to the front of his new Dame Edna Saab 9-5. This photo was taken during the process.

That’s the official explanation.

I prefer to believe that the gracious Dame saw something that literally made her jaw drop. Perhaps you know what it was?

9-5 surprised

“That new 9-5 wagon is haawwwwwwwt”

That new Audi A6 is supposed to be groundbreaking?”

“Robin, put your pants back on now!”

Please post your captions in comments.

Saabs for less than lunch per day

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve been scouring some US Saab dealer websites this evening and I’ve noticed a few things. You want the good news or the bad news?

OK, the bad news first – some of these websites are absolutely terrible. Seriously.

Slow loading times. Bad formatting. Cheesy graphics. Difficult navigation. Some pages had absolutely no content on them, despite there being a link to that page promising something. One multibrand dealership, on the “Specials” page linked from their Saab website, had nothing but big SUV’s showing (and they weren’t 9-7x’s).

The web is one of the early points of contact for many potential buyers today. I hate saying this, but some of the websites I saw tonight were letting the Saab brand down, but more than that, some of them are quite possibly hurting the site owners’ businesses.

The good news belongs to the customers of a few dealers who have some special lease deals going on some 2010 stock.

I don’t want to single any dealers out and thereby put others at a disadvantage, but I saw a number of lease deals online that were under $300 per month for 2010 model Saab 9-3s, which is a daily cost that amounts to less than I spend on lunch most days. All of those come with various terms and conditions, of course, so read the fine print.

To put that into some sort of perspective……

Leasing is pretty uncommon here in Australia when it comes to private purchasing. From what I can tell (I’ve never done this myself), operating leases, where you basically rent the car for three years and hand it back at the end of the period, are a business-only proposition. When purchasing for private use and ownership, people tend to buy their cars rather than lease and they’ll either use their own money, or borrowed money.

If I were to buy a Saab 9-3 from a dealer here in Oz, I’d be looking at a minimum of $40,000 plus on-road costs for a base model. If I were to finance that amount over three years, I’d be looking at repayments of at least $1300 per month.

At an average of around $43 a day, that’s a lot of lunch.

If you’ve got cheaper and more accessible options, then consider your own situation before acting but even if you can’t use them right now, consider yourselves fortunate for having them to think about.

Saab 9-4x – minty fresh

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

I’m surprised we haven’t more color changes for the Saab 9-4x yet. Jeff sent through a few, but they were more concerned with some desired styling tweaks.

This one’s just color-related. Personally, it’s not to my taste, but when I asked Mrs Swade, she quite liked it, and she’s generally regarded to have much better taste than me.

It came via email from Sean and Raven and it’s intended to mimic Saab’s Glacier Blue from a few years ago.

Thanks Sean!

European Saab meeting in Huy, Belgium – 10 days to go!

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

There are only 10 days until what I’m sure is going to be a brilliant meeting of the Saabnuts in Huy, Belgium.

Event: 2nd European Saab Meeting
Date: Sunday 31st October
Location: Huy, Belgium

For those of you heading there from west of Huy, there will be a convoy coming from England that you can join up with as they head to the event. There will be a dozen or so cars coming from England and they’ll be joined by another 15 or so at Lille. Add in what could be another 20-30 from Paris and that’s quite a convoy.

Click here to access information about the convoy from UK Saabs. They’re even got a special plate made up to mark the occasion.

Here’s all the background information on the event. I hope you all have a great time and I look forward to seeing the reports!

——

Following on from the very successful first meeting back in 2007, Etienne from the Saabhuy weblog has sweet-talked his local city officials into letting Saabs invade Huy’s pedestrian zones once again for a 2nd European Saab Meeting.

You can view a huge catalog of photos from the 2007 gathering here.

From Etienne:

Thanks to the success of the 2007 event, the city council of my home town, Huy, has allowed me to organize again a great Saab Event in the historical centre of the city (which is usually a pedestrian zone).

Hundreds of Saabs are expected and there will be a Saab spare parts flea market area as well.

This year’s event will be the biggest, funniest and even craziest one ever held here as the whole historical part of the town will be reserved for Saab enthusiasts.

The meeting will start at 9 AM and both the meeting and the flea market are totally free of charge. It is based on first come first served and the first 250 cars will be better parked and receive a little welcome present – so you’re welcome to come earlier.

This meeting will be held on Sunday 31st October 2010. There is no special activity planned on Saturday, however an evening meal will be organized for Saturday night (this will be obviously charged and must be booked).

The city of Huy (and specific location of the event area) is here.

Any interested potential attendees are encouraged to check out the event webpage and contact the organisers through that site, or email Etienne on etienne@saabhuy.net.

The 2007 event really did look fantastic so if you’re within driving distance, I’d encourage you to check it out. Any time you can get together and talk Saabs with Etienne, Golfhunter or Robin M (who I’m pretty sure will be heading over) is a good time indeed.

Saab want to hear from Saab Car Clubs

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

Saab put out a call via their Newsroom and Facebook websites today in an effort to link up with more Saab Car Clubs around the world.

Saab on Facebook

Saab’s official Facebook page has a special section set aside for Saab Car Clubs, where you can have your club listed AND post notices about events coming up in the future.

Right now, they have 48 Saab Car Clubs listed but we all know there’s more than that out there. If you’re part of an unlisted club, or even a website community, then you can have your Club listed on the site, complete with website and contact details.

If you’ve got an event coming up, you can have details of that event listed on the site too. It’s good to see what’s going on in other parts of the world and you might even attract a couple of extra people along as well.

It’s great to see Saab taking steps to cater to people via Social Media. The next step is for clubs and individuals to get on board and make use of it!
