New Salem Saab opening the vault for Saab Fall Festival

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

New Salem Saab are hosting the Saab Fall Festival at their dealership at 2017 Central Avenue Albany, NY, this weekend.

For all you Facebook types out there, there’s a page for this event on Facebook where you can keep up with the latest happenings in relation to the event.

I just wanted to quickly share some of the stuff Darryl has managed to bring out for this event. It’s going to be a great time for Saab fans to take in some of Saab’s history as well as seeing all the latest gear that Saab has to offer.

How about an original 1967 Saab 96 with only 657 miles on the odometer? You can still see the plastic covers on the seats!

Saab 96 from 1967

Then there’s this Saab 900 limo….

Saab 900 limo

There will be a bunch of interesting cars there at the show, including one of the original 900 16V prototypes with the pearl white finish – a super rare car that visitors will be fortunate to see.

Peter Maitland from Charles River Saab will also be there with his magnificent Ol Blue Saab 95 and Saabo camper (recently bought back from the GM Heritage Collection).

And those are just a sample. There’ll be plenty more to see, as well.

As well as the cars, there will be decades of Saab memorabilia for people to look over. Given that New Salem Saab is one of the oldest family owned dealerships in the US, the Carl family have access to a lot of historical and interesting items and many of them are going to be on display at the Saab Fall Festival this weekend.

If you’re within driving distance, I hope you get along to the event. I really wish I could be there myself, but there’s always next year for me!

Anywhere to rent a Saab in LA?

October 21, 2010 in Saabology

I have a feeling the answer to this one is going to be a negative, but I’m all for trying to help out a Saab brother in need of some good wheels on his vacation…..

From the SandySaab:

I was hoping I could ask for any hints and tips in regard to renting a Saab (any Saab) in US.

I am going on vacation with my family to Los Angeles and San fransisco and will rent a car for about a week at each location. Now, wouldn’t it be great to drive a newer Saab in CA? I really want that, and have been looking around, but seems to be rather difficult.

I managed to contact one dealer who did not do weekly rentals, and no main street company rent Saab. So far, I’ve only manage to find a rather suspect rental company renting a vert, but that was way expensive and we are 4 people, the vert would be to small.

Calling around from my home in the big sand box (Dubai) is impractical, so I was hoping for this community and all the us based friends…

Any hints, tips, suggestions would be appreciated.

If anyone’s got any helpful suggestions, comments are open.

“Not so fast” on future Saab 9-4x diesel and BioPower

October 20, 2010 in News

Yesterday, I wrote about the Norwegian version of the Saab 9-4x press release, quoting as follows:

From August 2011, the 9-4X [will] also [be] offered to customers in Europe and the world at large. The engine range will eventually also include diesel engines, better adapted to a Norwegian tax regime than the powerful V6 petrol engines. In the Nordic countries will also BioPower engines currently being developed.

This gave us some hope that Saab might eventually fit a diesel into the Saab 9-4x, which is considered essential for the European market.

They may still do so, too, but that hope faded a little today.

Auto Motor and Sport have a reporter in the US, who’s over there to drive the General’s 9-4x sister vehicle, the Cadillac SRX. Seeing he was over there, he enquired about the diesel proposition and was told by one of the Cadillac people that there were no preparations being made for the fitment of diesel at the factory where both vehicles will be made.

Further to that, however, is the amendment of the Norwegian press release that was the trigger for this whole issue.

The paragraph that I quoted above has now been edited out of the release. It seems they must have been working from an early draft that slipped through the net (It happens more often that you would think).

So, all of you looking for 9-4x diesels (with more MPGiesels – thanks James May) – stand down.

Press Release: Saab Great Britain Celebrates 50th Anniversary

October 20, 2010 in News

  • Founded as Saab’s UK importer in October 1960
  • Celebrating with rising sales and new products
  • Entire product line-up to renewed by end of 2012

Saab Great Britain is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week with rising sales and growing confidence as the Swedish premium carmaker enters a new era of independence.

Saab GB AnniversaryExactly 50 years ago, Saab Great Britain Ltd was founded to import and distribute Saab cars as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Saab-Scania group. Half a century later, it now represents a UK market that has grown to become Saab Automobile’s largest in Europe outside Sweden.

Saab GB reaches this milestone in its history only eight months after Saab Automobile was reborn as an independently-run business following its sale by General Motors to Spyker Cars NV of Holland.

As a result Saab GB, now based at new headquarters in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, is celebrating its 50th birthday with renewed confidence in the future, backed by a Saab business model that is as innovative as the company’s automotive products. The benefits include:

Growing Sales

Last month, more than 1,200 Saab cars were sold in the UK, an 11per cent increase against September last year.

New Model Roll-out

Sales are expected to grow still further this year with the introduction of the full new 9-5 saloon range. Voted among the best new cars for 2011 in US Time magazine, Saab’s new flagship model comes with choice of six turbocharged engines, ranging in power from 160 to 300 hp, with CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km.

Wednesday Snippets – airbag edition

October 20, 2010 in Saabology

Tonsilitis still sucks, but the Girl Who Played with Fire was awesome.

——

Wulf has picked up on a quick interview with Victor Muller, which appears in the latest magazine from the American International Auto Dealers Association.

You can view the interview itself on Saabworld, or go to the AIADA website and download a copy of the magazine.

It’s a short piece, but it’s Victor, and any interview with Victor makes for interesting reading.

——

Voting for the Norwegian Car of The Year is open and the Saab 9-5 is on the ballot.

Click that link, select the 9-5 in the poll at the bottom and then click the button “send inn”.

I thought we’d done one of these Norwegian awards already. How many of them are there?

——

And whilst you’re in a voting frame of mind, why not get a Saabnut into the finals of Jalopnik’s Next Top Car Blogger competition?

Phil Lacefield Jr is currently in second place and only the top two get into the final of the competition. It’d be terrible to see him drop down to third and miss out, so please click here and cast your vote for Phil Lacefield Jr.

——

Beijing Automotive bought some old Saab assets at the end of last year. We’ve seen a couple of their ideas for their remodelled Saabs already, and here’s something they’re going to build on the architecture of the Saab 9-3:

BAIC B61

It’s called the B61 concept and yes, it’s a little scary. More photos here.

It seems they’re planning a plethora of new cars based on their architecture acquisitions. From the China Car Times:

Other plans for the Saab 9-3 platform include a compact SUV that has been codenamed BC506, and was on show in Beijing as the B61 SUV, as well as the compact SUV, BAIC are already preparing a Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze fighter that has been codenamed BC501. Another mid size SUV is being developed, this will be codenamed BU506 and will also be be based on the 9-3 platform, it is rumored that the 007 and B40 SUV models are based on the 9-3 platform.

Thanks Justyn

And finally, I can’t resist sharing this. Don’t try this at home.

Photoshopping the Saab 9-4x

October 20, 2010 in Saabology

Opinions are always divided when a new car, or an update, comes on to the market.

One of the little traditions that we tend to have in the larger Saab community is the instant customisation of the new vehicle. Whether it be color changes, styling changes, wheel changes – whatever. A new iteration of the new vehicle is only a few digital brushstrokes away. And it’s always fun to look at.

‘Jeff’ was the first to apply his own personal tastes to the new Saab 9-4x. He’s darkened it down, removed the two-tone coloring, brought in some larger air dams and added some ‘Edge’ wheels to very nice effect.

Click.

Nice work, Jeff. I’ll have one of the darker ones, thanks :-)

Redux: Saab Fall Festival – coming soon!

October 19, 2010 in Saabology

Re-published – coming up this weekend!

I wish I could be there!!

——

One of my mates in dealerland is Darryl Carl from New Salem Saab. Many of you will have enjoyed his open and honest comments on this site and will know that his heart lies well and truly with the Saab brand.

NSS is one of the oldest family-owned dealerships in the US and when you talk about people doing it tough over the last 12-18 months, few have done it tougher than the folks at New Salem Saab. The dedication that it’s taken for them to keep the doors open through the Saab sale will one day be the stuff of legend.

The good news is that they’re still here and to celebrate, New Salem Saab is teaming up with the New England Saab Association and Goldwing Recycled Saab Parts to present the Saab Fall Festival.

  • Date: October 23, 2010
  • Time: 0900 to 1700
  • Location: New Salem Saab, 2017 Central Avenue, Albany, NY

Here’s the flyer……..click!

Some more details…..

The Dyno sessions will vary in cost depending on the car and the age of the owner:

  • $60 for non-Saabs
  • $40 for Saabs
  • $25 for Saabs owned by someone under 20 years of age

There will also be a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun with the chance to smash up a Swedish vehicle from another manufacturer (and no, it’s not a Koenigsegg!). Proceeds from this particular exercise will go towards the Crisman Memorial Scholarship, a regular beneficiary of NESA fundraising and a very worthwhile cause.

If you’re in the area, I really hope you’ll be able to get along and enjoy the day. It’ll be a great way to check out the new Saab 9-5, see New SAlem Saab’s facilities, support the Crisman Memorial and of course, catch up with all your Saab buddies at the same time.

Tell Darryl I said G’day!

Saab looking at diesel and BioPower for the 9-4x

October 19, 2010 in News

The Saab 9-4x press releases came out yesterday and as predicted, the two engines at release were a normally aspirated 3.0V6 making 265hp and the turbocharged 2.8V6 making 300hp.

There was no mention of a diesel or BioPower engine in the global release published yesterday, but it has been noted in comments that the Norwegian press release mentions both for the Saab 9-4x in the future.

This is a Googletrans from the Norwegian press release:

From August 2011, the 9-4X [will] also [be] offered to customers in Europe and the world at large. The engine range will eventually also include diesel engines, better adapted to a Norwegian tax regime than the powerful V6 petrol engines. In the Nordic countries will also BioPower engines currently being developed.

The mention of BioPower is interesting because it brings to life the possibility of adapting Saab’s 2.0T BioPower engine currently in the Saab 9-5. Whilst having less power than the 3.0V6 base engine, it would have more Saab-like driving characteristics and less weight.

‘Arild’ first noticed this in Norwegian press articles about the 9-4x where diesels were specifically mentioned, and writers of those articles attributed it to the Saab press release. A look at the Norwegian version of the release confirmed what they were saying (thanks Arild and Me).

They won’t be available at launch, obviously, but it’s encouraging to hear they’re in the pipeline.

A Saab blog you should be reading….

October 19, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s a Saab website that flies under the radar, but it’s one that you should be checking out from time to time.

The site is called CRSblog and it’s written by the guy responsible for me heading over to Boston for Swedish Car Day – Pierre Belperron.

Pierre only updates it from time to time, depending on his schedule. But whenever something new appears on there, it’s always worth reading. Pierre has a couple of decades experience working with Saabs and his knowledge and love of the brand shines through in the stuff he writes.

The last two entries on the site made me smile. So much so, in fact, that I just had to write this entry to point them out.

The Forgotten Saab takes a good look at a Saab that often gets overlooked – the first generation Saab 9000. I couldn’t stop smiling as I read because that model is the one that kicked off my personal history with Saab.

The (not so) Good Old Days examines the price people paid for having a car of such distinction as the Saab 900. I see every comment that comes through SU and I know that there are a number people who are a bit like country and western singers – they pine for the good ol’ days. We all do to some extent, but this post breaks down the romance of holding on to the old in a pretty straightforward fashion.

Check them out, and enjoy!

My 2 cents on the Saab 9-4x

October 19, 2010 in Editorial

At last, the Saab 9-4x cometh.

It’s been nearly three years since I first made my way into a Detroit winter to see this vehicle at the 2008 NAIAS (meeting up with new 9-5 owner Greg Abbott at the time, too). The car made a bigger impression on me than I thought it would back then and personally speaking, I find it to be even more interesting now.

From concept to the real deal….

Saab 9-4x Concept front

Saab 9-4x

So why’s it more interesting now? Because now it’s for real. Pretty soon this is going to be a tangible vehicle on dealer lots that people will be able to drive and buy. It’s built on modern technology and it’s been envisaged from the ground up as a Saab vehicle. The last time Saab actually expanded its range with an all-new deliberately Saab vehicle – not a replacement for something else – was with the Saab 9000 in the mid 1980s. To say this is a rare thing would be a massive understatement and to dismiss the vehicle for any reason whatsoever would be foolish in the extreme.

Saab sales chief, Adrian Hallmark, resigns and goes to Jaguar

October 19, 2010 in News

UPDATED

Bad news from Car Magazine overnight…..

Jaguar Land Rover today announced a raft of management changes. Phil Popham, currently MD of Land Rover, is global sales and service director; John Edwards, the European MD, becomes global brand director of Land Rover; Adrian Hallmark quits Saab and comes back to the UK as global brand director of Jaguar; and Mike Wright is new executive director of JLR (Jaguar Land Rover)

UPDATE: A release from JLR confirms the appointment, which is effective as of December 1st (Thanks Dave!).

Adrian Hallmark, joins the company as Global Brand Director, Jaguar. Hallmark, 48, who will have global responsibility for the Jaguar brand, joins Jaguar Land Rover from Saab Automobile, where he was Executive Sales Director; prior to this he held senior management positions at Porsche, Bentley and Volkswagen.

Adrian Hallmark’s appointment was the coup of the year when it happened, a great signal of faith in the future prospects for Saab.

His resignation after just seven months, then, has to be a cause for concern.

Maybe he simply got a Godfather offer from Carl-Peter Forster, the former GM Europe head who’s now CEO at Tata Group? Maybe Victor’s renowned work ethic and drive were a touch too much?

I sure hope it wasn’t simply a matter of some extra dollars per week. The Saab opportunity was a unique one, resuscitating an established and respected brand that had been so neglected. One would think a challenge like that would appeal to someone with Hallmark’s CV. It’d be interesting to find out.

Hallmark’s successor is yet to be announced, but I’m sure they’re hunting far and wide even as we speak. Whoever it is, they’ll have a tough job with big responsibilities. Hallmark was in the midst of establishing new Saab sales operations in China, Australia, Russia and a number of markets in South America.

Press Release: New Saab 9-4X: World Premiere. Scandinavian Choice for the Crossover Segment

October 18, 2010 in News

Note: There are more press releases relating to the Saab 9-4x below. This is an overview.

——

  • Saab enters growing crossover segment
  • Progressive Scandinavian design inspired by Aero X concept
  • Car-like driving dynamics challenge best-in-class performance
  • Advanced Saab XWD mated with Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis
  • Spacious cabin, driver-focused cockpit and ample storage
  • Compact, light, efficient engines: 265 hp 3.0V6i and 300 hp 2.8V6 turbo
  • Flexible cargo management system

The new 9-4X brings unique Saab design and engineering values to the growing mid-size crossover segment. With distinctive Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired looks, it also offers car-like handling and ride characteristics that challenge class benchmarks.

Making its world premiere at next month’s Los Angles Auto Show, the 9-4X expands Saab’s product portfolio to three car lines and will provide a fresh, alternative choice for independently-minded crossover buyers. It is an important next-step in the Swedish brand’s renaissance as an independent premium car manufacturer.

Muscular and sporty to drive, the 9-4X is aligned in looks and size between the 9-3X all-rounder and new 9-5 sedan. Outside and inside, it communicates its Saab identity with clean, uncluttered design and signature motifs, such as its wraparound-effect windshield, ice block lighting theme, driver-focused cockpit and flexible cargo handling.

In true Saab tradition, the 9-4X delivers on its sporty persona. It is configured around a unique, purpose-designed crossover body structure, which has been key to delivering its exceptional handling and ride properties. Car-like driving dynamics are supported by Saab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system, Saab XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Under the hood, nestles a choice of compact and efficient V6 engines, naturally-aspirated or turbocharged. The 265 hp, 3.0-liter motor for the entry-level model features direct fuel injection and variable valve timing; while the 300 hp, 2.8-liter exchanges direct injection for twin-scroll turbocharging and is exclusive to top-of-line Aero variants. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive, electronic control.

“The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand,” says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson. “It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we’re confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand.”

The 9-4X goes on sale in North America in May next year, with sales in Europe and other global markets due to begin from August. Prices will be announced shortly before sales commence.

Body sculpted by Saab

The 9-4X cuts a broad and powerful stance, with clean, uncluttered lines that echo Saab’s Scandinavian design ethos. Its distinctive face, in common with the new 9-5 sedan, draws inspiration from the award-winning Aero X concept car, with a deep, three-port grille and ‘ice-block’-effect lighting themes.

Disguised windshield and door pillars create Saab’s signature wraparound-effect, the single glasshouse graphic emphasizing the brand’s traditional ‘cockpit’ look. Other exterior Saab identifiers include the shaping of the headlamps, a ‘hockey stick’ waistline and strong C-pillars complemented by a wraparound-effect rear screen.
