Saturday Snippets

November 27, 2010 in Saabology

Don’t miss out on the Saabs United Cyber-Monday specials from Maptun, State of Nine and Saab USA Parts!

I’ll post those back at the top soon.

——

My sincere thanks to “Me” for putting together our new winter banner, featuring the Saab 9-4x.

Cool.

——

More winter fun (well, it’s fun when you’re writing it from somewhere where it’s nearly summer) ……

First, a funny little video, shot over to me by Per R:

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMw1q297I24

….and to keep that company, some more photos from Trollhattan, thanks to Rikard.

You may have seen in comments, or at TTELA, that Saab had to halt production on Friday due to excessive snow on the roof of the factory.

Hopefully they can get that cleared and production up and running again as soon as possible.

——

Speaking of TTELA, there’s a very good story from the LA Auto Show from Valdemar Lönnroth, who I met at the show (we shared a very spacious bus ride out to the 9-4x photo shoot).

It’s a good overview of the feeling towards Saab at the LA Auto Show, and what Saab needs to do to turn those good vibes into customer awareness and ultimately, sales.

Such a thing is that many Americans in the common thought that Saab has been effectively eliminated, another is that they still believe it is part of GM. Here it is of course crucial that the public relations people and dealers manage to convey a different story: the facts.

——

One more reason for Saab to go full-on into the World Rally Championship when they get a car suitable for the purpose – to take on GM.

GM aren’t certain to head into rallying, but they’re thinking about it. Not that I bear them any too much ill-will, but I’d love to see Saab take them on and win.

——

There’s an interesting Saab for sale in New Zealand. I know a bloke who swore black and blue that if ever saw one of these on the market, he’d buy it.

It’s no ordinary yellow convertible. If the badging is to be believed, then it’s one of the late model Turbo S convertibles, which should be fitted with one of the factory red-boxes.

There was one of these for sale in Hong Kong a little while ago, too, and at a bargain price. I wonder if this is the same car?

Autozeitung and the Saab 9-5 SportCombi

November 27, 2010 in Saabology

German car magazine Autozeitung had a new issue out a few days ago and in it, they’ve published this image of the Saab 9-5 SportCombi.

I believe it’s a photoshopped image as I’m sure there aren’t any undisguised Saab 9-5 SportCombi’s running around like fully dressed cars.

It’s a darn good photoshop, though. Not the most flattering angle, but a darn good photoshop nonetheless.

Thanks to Alexandros for the scan.

Friday Night Snippets

November 26, 2010 in Saabology

Our Saab 9000 has, as predicted, been written off by our insurers.

Despite the inevitability of someone calling me a goose, I’m accepting this decision and have now started the search for a replacement. The criteria: inexpensive, preferably another 9000 due to cargo needs, decent condition and acceptable mileage.

This one seems to fit the bill. I drove it a few days ago and whilst the brakes feel a little spongy and the steering a little rubbery, the price and condition are right. It’ll be the first time in years I’ve owned a Saab with a cloth interior, though – which is not a bad thing, just different.

I’m getting it looked over early next week. Hopefully everything checks out OK. If not, it looks like I’ll have to swallow the extra $1,000 it costs to head off to the mainland to look for an Anni.

——

According to Gasgoo, the Saab 9-4x could be the first of the new generation Saabs to hit the Chinese market next year….

Swedish carmaker Saab, now owned by Dutch auto maker Spyker, will start selling cars in China, Russia, Brazil and Mexico in the first half 2011. Its small luxury crossover, the new Saab 9-4X will probably be the first model to be put on the Chinese market, where SUVs are the most beloved, xcar.com reported Friday, citing Adrian Hallmark, Saab’s executive director of sales.

I’m a little dubious on this one, for a couple of reasons. First, there’s the Adrian Hallmark citation. Hallmark’s resignation was announced last month, though he doesn’t start at Jaguar until December and could still be tying up loose ends.

Also, how are they going to enter the Chinese market in the first half of 2011 when their supposed first vehicle, the Saab 9-4x, won’t going sale in countries outside North America until August?

Chinese Saab fans – I think you’ll get the 9-5 and 9-3 before the beloved crossover (which is how I think the 9-4x should be referred to from now on :-) ).

——

Swedish Automotive commentator, Matt Carlson, thinks that a lot of the doom and gloom permeating Saab press reports is a tad premature.

It’s nice to see someone there looking at the bigger picture and acknowledging all that Saab has been up against this year. Carlson thinks Saab need to rebuild confidence over the next six months and a turnaround will need to be evident during Spring.

Fair call. I’d give them until summer, when the 9-5 combi should come.

——

Speaking of Sweden, it’s cold in Trollhattan right now. Spare a thought for the little Trolls….

Thanks to Tim and Mioh

LA Q&A – Saab 9-4x diesel

November 26, 2010 in Saabology

I’m still finalising some answers to the questions you asked prior to the LA Auto Show. One of those was about the Saab 9-4x and diesel.

There are reports floating around adressing this question, so rather than wait until the whole Q&A is ready, I figured I’d get the 9-4x engine question out of the way now.

——

Any update on a diesel engine for Europe? – for Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-4x

There are several issues with alternative engines for the Saab 9-4x. It’s known that there isn’t a V6 diesel available right now and that’s the ideal engine for this model in Europe.

Jan-Ake Jonsson spoke to a few reporters about this issue and he’s being quote fairly widely now:

Saab sources have conceded to Autocar that sales will be hampered by the lack of a diesel and company boss Jan Ake Jonsson has said a diesel 9-4X is unlikely to ever be launched.

“If you then look at the life cycle of the vehicle, typically five or six years, before we actually have a diesel engine, we have to find one, we have to test it, we have to install it, validate it, and you are two years into the life cycle,” he said.

“And then you have a very short payoff period. So I think it is unlikely.”

Before you go and all sackcloth-and-ashes in comments, please know that every Saab enthusiast with a heartbeat already knows that this will severely restrict sales of the 9-4x car in Europe. It’s been thoroughly documented and discussed and JAJ’s quote only sets in stone what we already knew. Please save your keystrokes and move on.

I spoke with other staffers in LA about alternative powerplants for the 9-4x. Their responses inadequately expressed in my words – in a nutshell…..

It’s considered that both the 2.0T and 2.0 TTiD could pose emissions and refinement issues in the Saab 9-4x because of its larger size and weight.

Further to that, it’s a basic fact that a modern four cylinder engine will generally not be as refined as a modern six cylinder engine and it’s considered that refinement and smoothness are a bit more of a priority for the average 9-4x buyer at all levels. Hence, we have two six cylinder powerplants and it seems Saab would be unlikely to use a diesel unless there was a suitable V6 diesel available.

——

The bottom line – we have always known that the Saab 9-4x is a vehicle designed with the United States as its primary target. Whilst I’m sure there are/were potential buyers in Europe, these were always going to be small in number, even smaller now with no diesel in sight.

The Saab 9-4x will do its job in the United States. It looks great. It’s a good size, without being too big and cumbersome. It should feature car-like handling with its chassis tuned by Saab and the price range for the five Saab 9-4x model variants seems spot on.

Saab finance and loyalty offers for Canada

November 26, 2010 in News

Canadian dealers are getting charged up for the arrivals of their 2011 stock.

I’ve just had some word come through about the finance and loyalty offers that will be available for Canadian customers.

Finance rates for the 2011 9-3 and/or 9-5:

  • 24 or 36 months will be 1.9%
  • 48 to 72 months will be 2.9%

For cash buyers who have no need for these finance rates, there will be a $2,000 cash buyer discount available.

For current Saab owners, there will be a $1,500 loyalty bonus available, which can be used in conjunction with the cash buyer discount.

Thursday Night Snippets – List edition

November 25, 2010 in Saabology

This is not part of a list, but the rest will be.

The 2011 Saab 9-5 brochure (US version) is available online. It’s pretty darn cool. Looks a lot like some of the entries in the (unofficial) Saab ad competition :-)

There’s even a mention of the Saab community in there.

Right click, Save As (PDF)

——

Our mate Arild – who owns a new Saab 9-5 named ‘Oakie’ – has published a list of 10 reasons to buy one.

——

A photo from the Dutch Saab Support Convoy has been listed as one of Reuters “Best of the year” photos.

Now the big question – who’s dog is it?

:-)

——

Car and Driver have listed their Ten Best Design Details for 2011.

Check out the last two…..

——

Inside Line have pulished a list of cars from the LA Auto Show, graded by their index of evil* fuel economy labels.

The Saab 9-4x scored a B-minus, which is not bad for a 2000kg crossover.

* It was a joke.

The best winter tires video you’ll ever see

November 25, 2010 in Uncategorized

TuuSaR just dropped this one in comments and I’ve rarely ever felt so compelled to share a video on this site.

In the next three minutes you’ll see lots of 90/00′s goodness, some great fast driving on snow and ice…….. in a Saab 9-3 Viggen……… and if you’re really quick, you’ll also see a 3.5 inch floppy disk (to our 13 year old ad competition entrants – ask your parents).

Awesome. The Viggen is awesome. And the tyres are pretty good, too.

Winter driving demonstration from Seattle

November 25, 2010 in Saabology

Maybe some proper winter tyres or winter driving tips would have helped a few people in this video. Maybe not. But it’s good to see that one of the few cars that made it unscathed through this intersection in Seattle was a Saab 9-3 (at 4:35).

Thanks to Quijote for the tip!

A dubious milestone passes

November 25, 2010 in Editorial, Saabology, Troll Stuff

EggsnGrits here, long time no post.  My day job has been insanely demanding for the last three or four months, but with magnificent results, so I’m not complaining much.

Thanks to @JustSaab on Twitter, I’m reminded that this is the very day and hour that I reluctantly picked up the phone to call Swade in Tasmania a year ago.  The information that I had to give? Koenigsegg Group had abruptly ended their bid to purchase Saab Automobile AB.  The announcement was made near the end of the European working day, about 10:30 AM here in Nashville, Tennessee or about 3:30 AM in Tasmania.

As I recall vividly, Swade’s first words were, “Fair dinkum?”  (Translated:  ”Really?”)  The second question was one that really brings back the memories:  ”Who is reporting it?”  As you may recall, by late November of last year we’d had quite enough of the junk journalism and speculative posts surrounding the GM/Saab split.  Swade (nor I, for that matter) was in no mood to wrestle with yet another bogus report with no real basis in fact.  ”Reuters, AP and BBC from what I can see here.  Fritz Henderson (then acting CEO of GM) has a news conference scheduled for today.”   Of course, you know the rest of the story.

I bring this up today not to wallow in the negatives of Saab’s near death experience.  I want us all to revel in just how far we have come!  Two new world-class vehicles, our new 9-5 and the home-run 9-4x, in the showrooms.  Dealerships in Canada.  A partnership with a leader in automotive technology, BMW, for development of new Saabs.  A new 9-3 in engineering and test.  A growing and thriving North American organization lead by Mike Colleran and crew.  The talented Jason Castriota leading our design efforts.  And, finally, a charismatic and active leader in Victor Muller paired with our own strong, steady Jan-Ake Jonsson.

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving week.  We’ve come so far in just 12 months.  Just think about what we can do with the next 12.  It’s going to continue to be a great ride.

Saab Historic Rally Team racing in RAC Rally this weekend

November 24, 2010 in Saabology

No, it’s not that RAC Rally. It’s the Roger Albert Clark Rally, which is one of the bigger events on the historic rallying calendar in England.

And no, it’s not the Saab Historic Rally Team that I’m used to covering on these pages. That’s the Saabs United Historic Rally Team, which is headed up by some Swedes and which ran in the Rally to the Midnight Sun in Sweden earlier this year. This team is headed up by some Brits and they’re running several cars in the Roger Albert Clark Rally, starting this weekend in Pickering.

As you’ll see below, it’d be well worth getting to the start, too, as Erik Carlsson and one of his co-drivers, Stuart Turner, will be present to wave them off.

Spectator information for the Roger Albert Clark rally is here.

——

The organisers of the Roger Albert Clark Rally are pleased to welcome the Saab Historic Rally Team to this year’s event. The brainchild of Roger Albert veteran Jim Valentine, the Saab Historic Team was put together at a time when the future of car maker Saab was uncertain and Jim was concerned that the 50th anniversary of Saab’s historic win on the RAC in 1960 might pass unnoticed. Thanks to Jim and his team we are delighted to be able to announce that the crew of that car, Erik Carlsson and Stuart Turner will flag the competing cars away from the Pickering start on Friday 26th November.

1960 was not just a special year for Saab but a year which heralded a seismic shift in rallying in the UK. Under Jack Kemsley’s stewardship, the RAC introduced the concept of a ‘special stage’ on forestry land for the first time. So Erik and Stuart do not just represent the history of Saab in rallying but the birth of stage rallying itself and these men both went on to dominate the sport, Erik as a driver and Stuart as a team manager for BMC and Ford

As well as the strongly supported team of competing Saabs, Jim Valentine has organised for a rather special service ‘barge’ to backup the team. Jim has arranged for a Scania 3 Series Streamline pulling a drawbar trailer to follow the rally. Their truck may also qualify for historic status being from a model range dating back to the seventies when Saab and Scania were still in the same industrial group.

Jim hopes that Saab fans will come to watch the start and follow the progress of the Saab team throughout the rally. “The Roger Albert Clark Rally is the best rally in the UK for historics and it has a superb atmosphere. I think this year’s event is going to be fantastic and look forward to meeting you there” he says.

On view at Pickering as a backdrop to events will be the rarely seen Saab Museum copy of the 1960 RAC winner, which will be displayed at event start alongside the modern Saab Carlsson 9-3 limited edition. Just 96 of these special edition cars will be available from just 50 Saab dealers across the UK.

——

A little history on the Roger Albert Clark Rally for those who – like me – don’t know much about it….. This comes from a mate in England, Alistair P:

This rally is in honour of the late Roger Clark, a famous English rally driver from the late 60s & 70s. In fact one of the earliest Saabing memories I have is of my folks and I going to see Roger, Erik and Stig being interviewed on stage at some hotel in the North West of England prior to the “proper” RAC rally, in the late 70s. The guys who run the modern rally do so to pay homage to the old Lombard RAC Rally which was a much tougher even than the modern WRC “Rally GB”, and clearly take advantage of Roger’s initials!

Thanks to Alistair for the background, and the tip!

Free “Mr Saab” books (Swedish version)

November 24, 2010 in Saabology

UPDATE – All the books are gone!

I received the following from Oxford Saab, who had a minor barn-find whilst doing their annual stocktake.

Swedes who don’t have a copy of this fantastic book might want to get in touch via the email address below.

Thanks to Oxford Saab for thinking of we SU readers!

——

Hi Steven

During our annual stock clearance we have come across 7 copies of the iconic Erik Carlsson Mr Saab book which I am sure many of your readers on SU are aware of.

Normally this would be considered an opportunity as they retail for about £50 and are quite sought after.

Our excitement was somewhat diminished when we noticed the books are the Swedish edition; not a word of English on any of the 157 pages.

After considering our options I have decided to offer them to the contributors of Saabs United in recognition of their efforts during the Save Saab campaign.

  • 7 copies available on a first come first served basis
  • Mr Saab book is free of charge
  • Recipient to pay postage cost
  • The books have sat on the shelf for a year so the dust jackets are a little worse for wear
  • Probably best if you can read Swedish

The book weighs 875 g I have checked postage from UK to Sweden = £6 & to USA = £11.50

If you’d like one of these seven copies, please email ……. UPDATE – All the books are gone!

Remember, it’s first come, first served.
