LA Notes – Day 2

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

Wow. It’s 1am at the end of another incredibly packed day. Five hours until the wake-up call, so I’d better get moving.

——

A few minutes ago I waited in the lobby for an elevator so that I could go up to my room. The bell dinged, the doors opened, and out came two identically dressed men, both wearing those earpieces with the curly wires that you see in any movie featuring the Secret Service. I don’t think they were Secret Service, but it’d be interesting to know who’s on the top floor here.

——

The #1 car from another manufacturer that was popular with Saab people today – the new Range Rover Evoque.

The wide prediction was that this car will replace the Mini as the must-have car for the wives/girlfriends/ladies of LA.

——

The #1 car from another manufacturer that was regarded as a sad joke by me – the Acura ZDX. I used to respect Honda so much but their mojo is seriously MIA.

It has a front end that can only be referred to as a monstrous proboscis and the rear seat is basically inaccessible without a chiropractor (with a rear door that’s so dangerously pointy it should be classified).

——

The stands from today:

  • Audi – superb
  • Buick – woody
  • BMW – truly, as boring as bat$h1t
  • Volkswagen – so boring, I think it was bat$h1t, but then they did have Heidi Klum. Seriously, VW’s American range is a giant, unambiguous snooze.
  • Suzuki – it really is a wonder that anyone knew they were there
  • Kia – very well prepared
  • Mercedes – had the excellent cupcakes
  • Toyota/Lexus – no, your SEMA cars will not transform you into an exciting company
  • Fisker – Spending their federal money well, if you like nice, luxurious stands at auto shows.
  • Jaguar – elegance in green, excitement in silver
  • Saab – clean and very, very classy

——

Dinner tonight was another stunning event – held on a rooftop at The Standard.

The rooftop at The Standard has a pool, a bunch of ‘pods’ with waterbed type lounges in them, sofas everywhere, bars and some very good food. They also had SAAB projected onto the walls like a big, Swedish bat-signal.

They even had the ‘Elements’ video from the Saab 9-4x launch projected onto the gym on a bulding across the street!

——

I’m working on getting answers to (most of) your questions posed prior to the LA Auto Show. Unfortunately, Victor Muller and Jan-Ake Jonsson have been working harder than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest with regards to their appointments with the press corps today. Pinning them down has been difficult.

They might be scarce tomorrow, too, but I’ll pin down some others to provide answers wherever I can.

——

The gallery below shows images from things mentioned above. Just another awesome day at the LA Auto Show.

Behind the scenes – Saab 9-4x photoshoot

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

Saab have given me some ‘behind the scenes’ type images from the photoshoot held in Malibu a few days ago.

The event was held primarily so that members of the press could see the car in a setting quite different from your usual Auto Show stand. Whilst they were in such a beautiful setting, however, they also made some video and still imagery, which is mostly what this selection of photos covers.

Notes applied where appropriate. Click to enlarge.

Christopher McKinnon and Mikael Jakobsson chat with Valdemar Lönnroth from the local newspaper in Trollhattan, TTELA. Valdemar had been working in Ohio for a few weeks prior to coming down to LA.

Christopher McKinnon does a ‘walkaround’ video of the Saab 9-4x…..

…..pointing out the trademark Saab three-port grille….

That’s Matt and Ben behind the cameras. Matt’s sporting a wonderful demonstration of lip-hair in support of Movember. Saab PR guru Joe Oliver has the microphone.

Matt’s camera seems slightly uninteresting in Chris’ rendition of “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts”

Levity aside – these guys did a teriffic job, on both sides of the camera.

Below, Mikael Jokobsson gives Valdemar a run-through of the dashboard display, which is the same as the display in the Saab 9-5.

All of these images were taken by Charlie Magee, Saab’s hired gun of choice. After the press left the building, Charlie and Joe hung around to get some more moody photos after the sun dipped below the surrounding mountains.

Check out the incredible results…..

——

Many thanks to Saab for the chance to participate in this day and to Charlie for his magnificent work on the camera.

Saab 9-4x – revealed!

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

I’m waiting and hoping Saab will get a video up soon of the reveal. All went well. The speeches were similar to those from Paris, but with some 9-4x inclusions, obviously.

A few photos…..

The car attracts some interest just after the reveal is finished….

That show was taken about 10 minutes after the reveal, actually. People were going in and out of the quite solidly from straight after the speeches. They still are.

Jan-Ake Jonsson and Victor pose for the cameras after the speeches…..

This is a large smudge on the windscreen of the Saab 9-4x….

I wonder how that happened…….

Saab 9-4x website now online

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

Big thanks to Jake for picking this up and emailing me a link.

The Saab 9-4x website is now online for your viewing pleasure :-) . The site has video, as well as a colour configurator and more.

Saab 9-4x website

Those of you with iPads and iPhones might be pleased to know there’s a Saab 9-4x app coming online shortly as well. Saab already have a Saab 9-5 app and the new one will expand on that.

Fancy a Saab 9-4x in Crystal Red?

JAJ live from LA – Autoline Detroit

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

UPDATE: VM on right now (1:55pm)

UPDATE II: Now over and done, but you’ll be able to see a recorded version at the link below.

I just dropped in on John McElroy from Autoline Detroit, who informed me that Jan-Ake Jonsson will be on Autoline shortly.

Autoline are doing a live show from LA and Jan-Ake Jonsson is scheduled to go on camera there at 1:45pm.

You might want to tune in earlier than that, however, and listen in on Bob Lutz, who’s appearing in his capacity as a board member of Lotus.

Actually, if the technology works OK, you should be able to tune in below…. (and if not, go to the link above….)

The Saab stand at LA Auto Show

November 18, 2010 in Saabology

Here’s a look around the Saab stand from the LA Auto Show. Neither the lighting, nor my camera technique are good enough to show how it really looks, but you’ll get the idea.

I’ve been here since eeeearly this morning, before most of the press corps rolled up, and early today there were a couple of guys from an exhibition company standing nearby and I could hear them talking about how well this was laid out, how cool it looked. They’re not wrong.

I wanted to take you for a look around and show off some of the cool features, a few of which I noticed in photos from Paris but hadn’t seen first hand.

They’ve actually had a real iceberg made for the show. It’s melting as we speak….

The “leafblower” from Paris is in the house once again, though it seems to have a deadspot where there’s little airflow and leaves are gathering there. Seeing where in the home of capitalism, I suggested they fill it with dollar bills, but that idea got caught in the deadspot :-)

Saab Leaf Blower

A new feature for LA is the massive paper airplane, which also doubles as a worktable. The pointy end can also be used to impale troublesome members of the media :-)

All of these features are elements of the video showing on the big screen at the back, behind which is the garage for the 9-4x prior to it being revealed later today.

Here’s the video:

Yann Secouet – Saab ‘Elements’ from SeventySix on Vimeo.

The cars showing on the Saab stand include a Saab 9-5 Aero, the Saab 9-3 ePower SportCombi and a Saab 9-3 Convertible. They’ll be joined later on by the Saab 9-4x.

Each of the cars on show has it’s own iPad with information about the car available for viewing.

Saab 9-4x to start at $34,200

November 18, 2010 in News

Greeting all.

Press day has begun. Saab’s press conference isn’t until 3:20 this afternoon, but I can give you the first bit of news already.

The base model FWD 3.0 Saab 9-4x will have an MSRP of $34,200 here in the United States. There’s no specific price mentioned for the 2.9T Aero yet, but it will likely be north of $45K and topping out over $50K fully specified.

Here’s the Saab 9-4x in its hidey-hole ready to come out and meet its public in a few hours from now.

I’ve got a heap of photos from the stand, which looks fantastic. I’ll get those edited and up on site shortly, but I wanted to get this pricing news and first photo up on site quickly.

PS – Charlie Magee, Saab’s hired gun photographer, took some amazing shots at the Malibu house yesterday. I’m hoping to share one or more later today. They look stunning.

LA Notes – Day 1

November 17, 2010 in Saabology

I’ve been awake for 39 hours straight, so forgive me if these aren’t totally coherent.

——

We just had the first of two wonderful dinners, at a spot called Geoffrey’s. Fantastic food, but even better was some of the conversation and discussion. It was an event with various members of the motoring press, from Holland, France, Sweden and the US. A small gathering, but quite nice (sensational food – I even ate salad!).

Here’s an example of the smaller, more nimble Saab for you. Efficiencies gained since the GM separation mean that Saab will deliver it’s next all-new vehicle (the successor to the Saab 9-3), in at least three body styles, for the same cost as what it took to do the 2008 Saab 9-3 re-fresh.

——

I met Jason Castriota for the first time in person this evening. He’s just as warm, personable and communicative in person as he is in the interviews. We didn’t have much time to chat but I’m sure we’ll get opportunities over the next few days.

——

I know from comments that people will be watching the pricing of the Saab 9-4x quite closely and making comparisons with the Cadillac SRX.

I raised this issue with Mikael Jakobsson, who’s one of the product managers for the Saab 9-4x and he mentioned some poignant truths in response.

First – if one were asking oneself about what car they wanted, you’d have a choice between the Cadillac exterior/interior and the Saab exterior/interior. Which one suits you best? I know what my answer would be.

Second – whilst two brands, or even two manufacturers might have the same thing listed on the equipment list, it doesn’t mean that the package is the same. The Saab – and everything in it – has been calibrated as a Saab…. to Saab’s specifications. We often get judgmental after making back-of-the-envelope comparisons between vehicles but you really have to get the vehicle in your hands to see what it’s actually like.

I’ve dwelled a fair bit on this point as it’s been a frustration of mine for a while. Let me put it this way – just because you’ve got a voice and a forum like SU to have it heard, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think hard about what you write before you write it.

What you say has ramifications for others who read it. So you dislike a light/trimpiece/advertisement/whatever – think hard before you try to amuse those around you with your witty remarks about how it “makes you feel”. There’s a time to be moved to anger and a time to temper your words and make sure you’ve put your opinion in perspective.

“I don’t particularly like those tail lights” makes more sense and gets your point across more effectively than “those tail lights make me sick” – which is an outright condemnation as well as an indicator of a particularly strange physiological constitution.

I try very hard to avoid having delusions of adequacy, especially when it comes to technical matters. I freely acknowledge my own lack of understanding. The same should go for all situations where you can’t easily put your thoughts in the appropriate context.

——

I’m compelled to say that I was really surprised at the Saab 9-4x preview today and I’m looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow.

Having seen the Saab 9-4x in concept form a number of times, I was ready to appreciate seeing the 9-4x for real today. What I wasn’t ready for was the totality of the impression it made on me.

Seeing it through the prism of the 9-5′s launch – as an extension and genuine improvement on Saab’s design execution (think interiors) – makes the Saab 9-4x make a whole lot of sense. It’s a very handsome vehicle when seen in person and when you consider the number of vehicles in this class that are on LA streets, it bodes well for some successful sales for Saab in the future.

——

Visitors to the LA Auto Show over the next couple of weeks should know that the 9-4x they’re showing there isn’t perfect. As mentioned earlier today, this is essentially a pre-production type car. It uses production-standard parts but it isn’t up a grade that you’d ship to a customer at this stage.

This is just a show car.

——

We had a guy from Autospies.com there at dinner tonight and he was genuinely enthusiastic about Saab’s future and the potential for doing things in new ways.

It was refreshing to hear someone outside the usual circles talking about things like the huge list of achievements Saab has accomplished this year, especially in the light of them being a dead brand walking earlier this year.

Seeing the Saab 9-5 and 9-4x together today and knowing there’s a successor to the Saab 9-3 just two years away does indeed bode well for the future.

——

Time for bed.

It’ll be a big day tomorrow, featuring a real iceberg in the middle of the Saab stand that Chris McKinnon will have to navigate around when bringing the 9-4x on to the stage during the reveal – should be fun.

Saab 9-4x pre-show viewing

November 17, 2010 in Saabology

OK, so the super-secret photoshoot isn’t super-secret anymore, though it is most definitely super. We’re in a private home that Saab have borrowed for the occasion to show the new Saab 9-4x off in a classy, outdoor setting before it goes under the bright lights of the LA show.

I guess I better make the homeowner proud and show off the very nice residence they’ve selected to show the Saab 9-4x’s contemporary lines. The house is located in the hills behind Malibu. A nice spot.

This is the only Saab 9-4x going around that’s been built using production materials. It’s been built on a ‘beta line’ in Michigan, which is used to test the production line and is therefore, a pre-production type vehicle, but the most complete one ready for the LA Auto Show.

Saab 9-4x Preview

I thought I’d take you through a number of the details on this production version of the vehicle.

My first impression is very, very positive. It looks like years ahead of the Saab 9-4x BioPower concept it was based on, which surprised me a little. Maybe it’s the silver paint, but it just looks a lot more contemporary and…. finished.

This is the front grille, which is specific to the Aero model that’ll be on show.

Saab 9-4x Preview

You’ll also notice the blue tint to the headlamps. Here’s a more deliberate shot to show the headlamps to maximum effect. When they talk about ice-block headlamps, they mean it – and these do look really cool.

Saab 9-4x Preview

A shot down the side of the vehicle, showing the wheels and arches….

Saab 9-4x Preview

And around the back. The trunk space is useful, though not what I’d call mammoth. That’s not disappointing in any way is this isn’t a mammoth vehicle. It looks more like a large driving vehicle than a medium hauler, which is a great thing IMHO.

The U-rail system is in place and they’ve also carried over the airplane handle in the floor from the Saab 9-3 SportCombi.

Saab 9-4x Preview

This Aero model has the powered tailgate (I’m unsure if it’s standard on the base model – we’ll find out shortly). This is the button on the tailgate itself and there’s another one on the driver’s door.

Saab 9-4x Preview

Here’s a shot of the rear legroom. Those front seats are back as far as they can go. I’d say the rear legroom is somewhere between the 9-5 and the 9-3.

The rear seats are heated, too, as part of a climate package.

Saab 9-4x Preview

I know a number of people will be keen to know about the dashboard and interior.

In short, the dashboard is largely similar to the 9-5, but there are a couple of differences. Yes, there’s a large piece of black plastic in the main dashboard area. This is supplemented with a few nice touches, however.

The first of these is some leather stitched trim at the top of the instrument binnacle….

Saab 9-4x Preview

And the other is the use of some light grey patterned trim around the shifter, leading up to the dash and over the top of it as well (as is present in the 9-5, but in brushed aluminium or woodgrain).

You can see it a little in the photo of ‘Leornardo’ below. Not also the switches for the ventilated seats.

Saab 9-4x Preview

Speaking of seats, these are the very comfortable Sports Seats in the 9-4x show car, with perforated leather for the vent feature.

Saab 9-4x Preview

This is the switchgear on the driver’s door. You can see, once again, the silver patterned trim that’s also used around the shifter and as an accent on the dashboard. The knob below is for the power tailgate.

Saab 9-4x Preview

——

The Saab 9-4x show car is making a very good first impression on me. Unfortunately there’ll be no driving of this vehicle as it’s the only one they’ve got and it’s headed for the convention center later tonight.

I’m looking forward to having a proper look over it in the next few days, but I think a lot of people who have been a little skeptical about this car might change their minds when they see it for themselves. Saab have done a great, great job.

——

The Saab 9-5 was here as well….

Saab 9-5

This particular Turbo6 had a parchment interior with ventilated sports seats and looked absolutely fantastic inside and out.

——

And a final surprise…..

As I was walking down the driveway, there was a Viggen convertible parked in a lay-away off to the side. Apparently it belongs to the agent who put the deal together to get the use of the house.

Greetings from LA

November 17, 2010 in Saabology

Howdy all.

The eagle has landed! A few short notes from my first 75 minutes in LALA-land.

——

First off, kudos to V Australia, who run a first class airline. It was my first time flying with them. Food was great, entertainment was sensational and the legroom was very good for economy class.

Aussie people-spotters might be interested to know Dr Geoffrey and Mrs Brynne Edelsten were on the flight.

——

The first American I spoke to after we landed was the passport control guy, who asked me why Saab don’t advertise much.

True story.

——

My first Saab sighting (and only one, so far) was a Saab 9-2x.

True story.

——

I’m now waiting to get on a bus for a super-secret photoshoot. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post photos straight away, but I reckon we’ll find a way.

——

The late autumn weather here in Santa Monica seems to be better than the late spring weather I left behind in Tasmania.

——

I need some sleep.

New TV ad – Saab Spain

November 16, 2010 in Saabology

Cardoso reports in from Spain (which was actually Saab’s fourth biggest market just a few years ago)…..

Saab Spain is doing an interesting offer in a 9-3 that they call Performance Edition. Last Saturday night, in prime time (23:00) I saw an ad in one of the biggest Spanish TV stations, Antena 3. The message was something like “sorry, you guys that have bought a new car recently…” because now you have a nice 9-3 with a very good price.

Here’s the ad… – fantastic to see some publicity in prominent places in a market like Spain.

And it’s hasta la vista from me….. plane time.

Muller: Aiming for 20,000 9-4x sales per year

November 16, 2010 in News

Bloomberg have a short interview piece with Victor Muller, who was on his way to LA when they called.

VM essentially started the spiel that we’ll hear for the next few days as the press corps descends on the LA Show.

Role…

“It’s a very important car because this is the extender of our product portfolio,” Muller said by phone from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport as he was about to fly to Los Angeles. “This means we can capture and keep clients in our brand much more easily than ever before. That’s very, very important for us.”

Diesel…

“It’s too bad there’s no diesel in it for Europe” after a GM-provided engine didn’t meet its needs for the region, Muller said. The Swedish carmaker may seek another diesel- engine supplier for the 9-4X’s future versions, he said.

Competition….

“We have definitely looked very carefully at where Audi sits with the pricing of the Q5 and Q7,” Muller said. “We’re a little bit between the Q5 and Q7, and we have to make sure we are competitive with them.”

——

I’m quite sure they’re looking pretty hard for a diesel that will make the car more attractive in Europe. They’d be mad not to, but they want to be cool about it.

Around half of the targeted 15,000 to 20,000 sales are pinned on sales outside of the US, so one would think that a competitive diesel will be essential in reaching that target.

Monday Night Snippets

November 15, 2010 in Saabology

BIG thanks to Jeff P for the LA Auto Show banner featuring at the top of the website all this week!

Outstanding stuff. I know a few people have commented on it already, so Jeff – it’s put smiles on people’s faces already……. job done!

——

This might be the final entry on SU before I hit LA, so there’s a bit of stuff to cover.

——

People and cars.

That’s what this stuff is all about. People and cars.

——

One of Finland’s former parliamentarians, Riitta Uosukainen, is doing some free promotional work for Saab after she and her husband had a collision with a moose on the weekend:

“We were driving with my husband at 17.00 (this time of the year it’s really dark outside in Finland at five O’clock), when suddenly a giant moose jumped out from the dark straight on to our car.”

The impact was so severe that Mrs. Uosukainen thanks the rugged build of the car, and thanks to that nothing bad happened to the people inside it:
“The car was totaled. If it hadn’t been a Saab we both (She and Her husband) would of been dead.”

Then she thanks all the officials who arrived to the scene and gives compliments to the Police, ambulance staff, tow-car company and the hospital. Everything worked flawlessly. “I think it’s good for everybody to know”.

The she gives a warning to all drivers out there: “It’s unbelievable how this situation could surprise us all. The way it came (the moose, translators clarification), there are no words to describe it. It’s such a noise that it felt as if it fell from the sky.”

Thanks to Pekko for the translation.

Assuming they’ll order a new 9-5 to replace the one the moose just totalled, perhaps VM could deliver it personally to keep the story rolling?

——

I had a great catch-up dinner with a couple of Sydney Saab friends this evening. OK, Richo’s moved over to the dark side, but I still sense good in him, as does Princess Lea [sic]. Brendan B was there with his Viggen convertible, too.

The other members of the Sydney Saab clan that I usually catch up with were probably sick of seeing each other’s faces as they had what looks like a great meet-and-drive event on the weekend.

I had to put two shots of the Viggen in there – because it used to be mine! It’s now owned by a guy named Wayne G, who tells me it’s purring like a cat.

Great job, NSW Saab nuts!

——

The Guardian had a short review of the Saab 9-5 over the weekend.

No urgency. Not much of huge interest there.

——

It’s interesting that Volvo’s new Chinese owners want to move into places Volvo hadn’t planned on going….

…. and then their main product development guy leaves.

Saab might be struggling onwards, but I still think we got the better deal.

——

LA – here we come!

Saab boarding pass

November 15, 2010 in Saabology

Seeing we’re having a Saab advertising theme this month, I thought it’d be good to share this initiative, put together by a dealership in England.

David N is the creative mind behind this one. Customers initially got an email flyer inviting them to First Class flight in the new Saab 9-5….

Saab 9-5 promo

And when they turned up to the event, they were presented with a boarding pass as a fun little formality before the actual drives took place….

Saab Boarding Pass

It’s a great way to liven up and authenticate the event and I’m sure a great keepsake for any customers who might end up buying a 9-5 afterwards.

Quest Saab have also had a mobile billboard made up to show off the new low emissions diesel range for the Saab 9-3.

It’s the little creative things like these and Shaw Saab’s interchangeable showroom billboard that make a difference sometimes.

Kudos to David and the Quest Group.
